Nice job by Marte…let’s get out of this now K-Rob!

  • marc resnick

gotta stop’em here and get lee out of this game already. i wanna see lidge vs damon tex arod.

  • Reggie C.

Damaso gets 2 thumbs up. Sometimes veteran relievers show you why they’ve lasted this long.

    • Reggie C.

Kinda why we might have to overpay to get Chad Cordero or. Rafael Soriano. VETS!

    I hope K-Rob’s not rusty.

  • chuck

Ok, so one positive, if we get out of this, then we make lee come in after a nice long sit on a cold wet night. We will tie this in the bottom of the 8th!

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

        No.

      • Chris

The Yankees have scored 4 or more runs in every playoff game. I’m not worried until Lee is pitching with 2 outs in the 9th.

      • http://www.stonerh1@aol.com Bob Stone

        Definitely NO!

Wowzah, that’s been a strike all day man.

Doesn’t it feel like 10-0 with the way Lee is pitching?

    • Brazilian Yankee

No, those 2 runs still count as 2 runs.

      • Phanatic Philly

But it has to feel worse the way the Yanks are getting mowed down.

    • http://dinosaursneverexisted.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/melky.jpg Drew

No. It feels like 0-2 with 1 and a half innings left.

For all the people saying this game is over:

Think back to how many times you’ve said that this season and been wrong. Be honest. Start learning from your mistakes.

The record speaks for itself. Be smarter.

You didn’t see them winning the ALDS, or ALCS. You had them losing like 4-5 games that they won.
Your prediction powers suck ass. Stop predicting things

Had them in 4 against the Twins and 6 against the Angels. I game I had them losing which they eventually did was game 5 in the ALCS. So looks like I have actually be right.

    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Why in the fuck are you happy about being right about the Yankees losing?

      • charlespoet

Seriously, where do you get that? Because I didn’t see them winning game 5 in LA. Oh dear God, what is wrong with me? I mean I did have them winning the series but how in the world could I ever see them losing any game.

I’m quite certain I could go through the gamethreads of some Yankee postseason victories and find you predicting defeat. Don’t challenge me to do it. Just admit you’ve been wrong, and let’s move forward like adults.

  • Souter Fell

please let’s get out of this unscathed

  • ansky

remember when umpires were decent? those were good times.

    • Chris

They’re no worse now than they ever were in the past. We can just see their mistakes more easily.

    • Hey Philly, Yankees ain’t the Rays

Were they decent? Or did we not have Hi-def slo mo multi angle replays?

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

One more big pitch, let’s go Dave!

  • Mike Pop

Ibanez, it was right down the pike. Posada just didn’t frame it.

  • BigBlueAL

This ump is all over the place now.

  • Brazilian Yankee

1-1 pitch was awesome, but the way Posada caught it made it look like it wasn’t a strike.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

    Crap.

  • cjc

    game over right there

  • Brazilian Yankee

    Game over.

    • Chris

I guess they eliminated the rule that you have to play 9 innings.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Three bad pitches are the difference in the game: the two by CC and the curve D-Rob just hung to Ibanez.

    • Ivan

Meh. That was a lucky hit still by Ibanez. BABIP decided to fuck with K-Rob.

    • Hova

I agree, but its the world series and those mistakes can eventually lead to a ring or no ring. Have to be as close to perfect as possible.

    • http://twitter.com/hopjake Jake H

I remain hopeful that MLB changes their silly rule where infield popups don’t count the same as homeruns.

  • BJ

    Hughes is done

  • JackC

I think, evem if the Yanks lose this one, which they haven’t yet, the Yanks still have a very good shot of winning the series — but not unless Hughes gets his shit, if not exactly together, then at least within the same zip code

no tip of the cap to a phillie fan coming to a yankees blog to talk shit in the 8th inning of game one though.

Its not looking good but hopefully the Yankees find a way for a break out inning. I don’t understand how the Fan Graphs Game Graphs work but that has the Yankees at 4% right now. I’d love to see what it looks like after a Yankee come back.

  • Ghost of Scott Brosius

good job my marte, who is proving doubters (and ive been on of the loudest) wrong. really terrible by phil, just let the whole team down with that effort, and then classless snapping at the ump. get it together

CG shutout masterpiece by Lee. Making our hitters look like little leaguers. Props to him.

And the tip of the cap to you Mr. Lee.

  • NatalMike

In my opinion you leave the guy in if he’s going good. This left right stuff is bullshit. managers didn’t use to do it and Girardi takes it to absurd limits

Yup the LOOGY failed all right.

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

managers didn’t use to do it

      Yes they did.

In fact, Casey Stengel was called “The Old Perfesser” and hailed as a baseball genius for reintroducing platooning and lefty-righty matchups to baseball. Managers used to do it in the dead-ball era, the practice had fallen out of habit, and Stengel brought it back.

We won many a ring from the practice.

The single most curious phenomenon of the 2009 Yankee season for me is the eagerness and frequency with which some Yankee fans want to proclaim a game over and lost before that game is over and lost. I have questions:

    1) Why do you feel the need to do this? What compels you do make that pronouncement?
    2) Is it out of joy, or dread, or some other emotion?
    3) What is this emotion borne from? Have you examined its source?
    4) Do you ever look at the results of those games and evaluate your pronouncement? If you have, have you course corrected, or are you content continuing your behavior in the face of countermanding evidence?

Please, enlighten me, people. You fascinate me.

    • AndrewYF

        I don’t care.

I disagree with Mike on plenty a topic. This would be one of them.

    • pete

it is actually an interesting psychological question. my guess would be that its a way of protecting yourself from the disappointment of your players letting you down – by accepting it now, it hurts less when they load the bases and don’t score. Not saying that’s gonna happen, just that people are trying to protect themselves by accepting a loss early.

    • claybeez

Not just 2009. It was the reason, I stopped having to follow Bronx Banter game threads a couple years ago. Why? Dunno. New Yorkers seem to expect perfection out of their local athletes. Maybe that. You know, the 1 bad inning/game signifying someone sucks/should be sent down/is never gonna amount to sh*t thing.

      Agree ^^

    • Johan Iz My Brohan

Damon’s joke of a popup to Cliff Lee hurt, that is the first time I’ve ever yelled at Damon from my TV.

  • Brazilian Yankee

Comon Swisha, do your thing (pop out)

  • BigBlueAL

The Phillies have been laughing all game long. I wouldnt be surprised if after the game Rollins changes his prediction to the Phillies in 4.

    • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm61weFrK4c JobaWockeeZ

Because Pedro and Cole Hamels scare me so.

      • trueblue

They way 7/9th of teh lineup is swinging the bat, Robin Roberts would scare me.

      • BigBlueAL

Oh I agree Pedro will get hammered tomorrow but shit you gotta admit the Phillies sure look cocky and comfortable out there. They are the defending champs and certainly play with a swagger that comes from that.

    • claybeez

I remember a young Andruw Jones once laughing, too.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

That swing by Swisher was the best Yankee swing all night.

  • DreDog

Why didn’t we trade for this guy again?

    • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm61weFrK4c JobaWockeeZ

      Future >>>> Short term

      • Mike Pop

It’s not like we got the Series without him or anything.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

          That.

  • http://dinosaursneverexisted.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/melky.jpg Drew

C’mon Swish. Get it. Make shit happen baby

    • http://dinosaursneverexisted.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/melky.jpg Drew

Taking call 3 right down the middle aint what I meant meng.

  • Phanatic Philly

Did anyone really think that Lee and the Phils would make the Yankees look like the Mets? I for one did not.

    • http://www.facebook.com/dougchu Doug

I haven’t seen any ghastly defensive errors.

      • Phanatic Philly

No not the errors but the silent bats. No fire, no passion.

        • http://www.facebook.com/dougchu Doug

I admittedly have not seen any Mets games this season. But cool story, bro.

      • Mike Pop

A tip of the cap to Lee.

No tip of the cap to a Phillies fan who does this.

    • Brazilian Yankee

Did anyone think Philly fans were retards? I for one did.

  • Jay

No post game interview of Lee by McCarver. He’ll just be blowing him.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

    Nick…what are you looking at?

  • southernyankeefan

    damn only 4 outs left.

  • Brazilian Yankee

Right down the middle. Swisher shouldn’t be playing anymore.

    • baka nakamura

i like the guy as much as anyone, but the guy is killing me.

    • pete

and who exactly should be replacing him?

    • Lefty

As much as I hate to say it, I’m starting to lean over to that side, because man, it just doesn’t get any uglier than the way he’s been swinging the bat lately…

  • JMK aka The Overshare

At least don’t make it embarrassing, Nick.

  • Raf

time for a comeback in the 9th when Lee leaves the game. hes been outstanding.

  • Pags

    SWING SWISHER SWING!!!!

  • Ghost of Scott Brosius

    swisher…….jeez

  • PsiFighter37

Swisher is garbage. Please put Hinske in tomorrow. K thx bai

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm61weFrK4c JobaWockeeZ

    Who gets pie?

    • Joe D.

      A-Rod, in the 15th.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Holy crap! Someone got it to the outfield!

  • MAMO

Look at all those pitches to Swisher on gameday… right down the middle. Pitchers are showing him no respect.

    • Hova

Why should they? The guy has been sucking it up the entire playoffs. Pitchers probably don’t even waste their time scouting him.

  • Mike

They need to sit Swisher, he’s really horrible. I’m sorry but I bet some people on this blog could go 4/37 in the post season… This is an embarassment to our lineup, albeit Cliff Lee may be one of the better pitchers; this is just pathetic. Calling all Yankees batters… WAKE UP!

    • pete

i bet nobody on this blog could go 1/100. we’d probably put the ball in play about 12 times

      • http://www.facebook.com/dougchu Doug

I would watch a 95 fastball go by and then shit my pants.

      • trueblue

Just like no one on the roster could do my job? Not sure what your point is

  • Evil Empire

I’ve loved RAB for a couple years (just starting posting though) and I’ve loved the Yankees for my entire life. I’m not giving up on either you guys OR the team, not this game not fucking ever. And when all the negative nancies get proven wrong as we win it all, ima give you sons of bitches a virtual pat on the back and tell you not to do it in 2010.

  • CT Yankee

    Number-9, Number-9, Number-9

  • JackC

    A) Game’s not QUITE over yet

    B) I for one, as did most of us, thought the Yanks would win in 6. Which means Philly wins two. This is one of them.

    C) Someone check my math for B

    • CT Yankee

OK Jack math is checked. Yanks in 6 (I still think 5)

  • ansky

Ok Swisher is becoming a real concern. Cant hit in close games, cant hit in blowouts, doesnt hit when we’re winning and doesnt hit when we’re losing. I love the dude but he might need a break.

  • ShuutoHeat

Ugh, this game and stomach problems the whole night = worst night in along time.

Regardless of outcome, gotta hold your head high for the Yankees.

  • NYQ

    THIS IS PATHETIC!! =(

  • danny

heh, that was a helluva sucky inning.

    • trueblue

      Which one?

  • southernyankeefan

Cliff Lee is a really good pitcher but the offense has got to do more than this bullshit.

  • David A

So think Lee will come back for the 9th?

    • Mike Pop

Yeah. Manuel is too smart, unfortunately.

    • http://dinosaursneverexisted.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/melky.jpg Drew

      Yes.

    • MAMO

      Yeah.

  • Joe D.

Hold em here at 4. Top of the order in the 9th. When Lidge is the opposition’s closer, anything is possible.

    Let’s do this shit.

    • baka nakamura

      word.

    • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm61weFrK4c JobaWockeeZ

If they put Lidge in. but he’s “back” apparently so I hope he is.

    • Tony

Lidge isn’t coming into this game.

      • Joe D.

Lee is at 108 pitches. If we get a couple guys on, we might well see Lidge.

        • Tony

          Maybe if we switched managers…

  • baka nakamura

    cliff lee starring as scrooge.

  • JMK aka The Overshare

Swish is batting something like .100 this postseason.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

      That high?

      • JMK aka The Overshare

That’s what I thought. Very sobering.

  • Reggie C.

You what scares me more than losing game 1. Losing game 1 without having scored a single fucking run. I know Cliff Lee is the tits tonight , but FUCK. We’ve scratched out a run or two off dominant starters before. Doesn’t even have to be earned runs. Just make this a game!

    • Mike Pop

Just all the more sweeter when we win tomorrow night and crush Pedro.

Sure, IF we don’t come back and tie it up – I’ll be dissapointed. But it’s not like we got dominated by a shitty pitcher.

Tip of the cap – he’s pitching a game of his life.

      • Reggie C.

        No doubt Pop.

I’ve tipped my cap to Lee (see earlier in this thread). I just feel like this offense is such a streaky beast right now if Arod or Dj doesnt hit. Its unnerving honestly.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside

          Momentum equals tomorrow’s starting pitcher.

  • http://dinosaursneverexisted.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/melky.jpg Drew

8 of the 9 last pitches have been straight down the fucking middle(go check gameday if you don;t believe it).

We have a really good shot in the bottom of the ninth. That shit won’t fly with our 1,2,3,4,5.

  • DreDog

I am not worried. This game sucked, but it’s just one game. Nobody is going to make me believe that this team can’t win 4 out of 6 from anyone. They’ve been winning series after series all year. This will be no different. Walking into a hot pitcher comes with the territory.

    Confidence factor: 10

  • nathan

Whats disappointing is that Joe G had too quick of a hook for Hughes.. i donno what it does long term in this series for Hughes’ confidence

Cant complain with 7 ip 2 runs from CC

The offense needs to wake up, atleast get the counts going, it would be quite the cofee to smell if Lee goes the distance with a shutout

    • Jay

Hughes can’t be walking guys that only get on base 30% of the time. That’s not a lack of confidence. It’s a lack of command.

    • trueblue

too quick? he turned a 2-0 game into a 4-0 game… Did you want to see him walk 4 or 5 more? The kid has ZERO faith in his stuff. The WS isn’t the place to find yourself

    • Brazilian Yankee

Dude, really? If anything Girardi shouldn’t even have pitched Phil in that 8th inning. He’s been horrible during the playoffs and it didn’t get any better tonight. AND Marte did his job.

  • JMK aka The Overshare

24 is still on TV? I haven’t seen that show in like a decade.

    • nathan

I thought Sutherland was locked up for some shit he pulled off stage

    • Reggie C.

Last season was pretty good. really watchable. this season its set in NYC (mostly). I’m watching.

  • ShuutoHeat

    omg more 24?

    gimme a fucking break…

  • Phanatic Philly

You guys have been great, this is an awesome site.
I wish the Phillie fans had one like this.
Well, good luck tomorrow. This game is over.

    • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm61weFrK4c JobaWockeeZ
    • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

Hey, look at that: a respectful fan of the opposition.

      You’re a good dude, PP.

      Hehe, I said pp…

      • JMK aka The Overshare

Solid guy, no doubt. Very respectful. I don’t agree that it’s a guarantee that Lee pitches like this on 3-days rest without having ever done it before, but hey, whatever.

    • Joe D.

LOL @ “This game is over.”

You apparently haven’t watched much Yankees baseball this season, have you?

      • charlespoet

If Cliff Lee is not pitching you are spot on.

    • http://leegrantphotography.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/madmax.jpg gxpanos

      Appreciate it, man.

      But it’s not QUITE over…

  • Jay

I just hit the mute button. If I have to listen to any more man-love of Cliff Lee by Buck/McCarver I am going to be ill.

  • Arman Tamzarian

I see no reason for Bruney here

    • http://dinosaursneverexisted.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/melky.jpg Drew

And I assume you have reasoning on why Bruney should not be in here?

    • Raf

him being in just makes me wonder how low Aceves is on the depth chart. they have Gaudin for long relief

      • Arman Tamzarian

Because hasn’t pitched in a long time in a game

  • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Bruney throws a scoreless 9th, and he will be go-to guy for all the 2nd guessers.

    • Arman Tamzarian

That would be great, becuase the Hughes/Joba tandem seems to have lost a little something, but if Marte and Bruney get going, its all good

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Didn’t we just go through this with D-Rob?

  • Hugh Jassman

    Oh well. Bedtime.

  • http://dinosaursneverexisted.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/melky.jpg Drew

    Bruney didn’t walk anyone. Woot.

  • Hova

Start Hinske in RF in game 2. Maybe his bat will have some magic. Swisher has been atrocious.

    • Mike Pop

Something I would consider as spur of the moment.

      • Hova

I know, but its just not happening for Swisher. How many times do we keep putting him out there. I understand he can work counts and plays decent defense, but he can’t hit in any situation.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ The Artist

Yeah, I’ve seen enough of Swish. It’s not like were overreacting to one game, he’s been bad the entire month.

But Girardi loves him, and thinks that when he breaks out he could go on a tear. We’ll see.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm61weFrK4c JobaWockeeZ

Heh no one is complaining about Bruney.

  • ansky

i hope the Yankees watch the replays of this game and see all the Phillies laughing in the dugout. I hope this pisses them the fuck off and they wake up and take it out on Pedro. I would LOVE to see a 5 spot in the first inning tomorrow.

    • ShuutoHeat

They need to repeatedly show the Yankees that nonchalant catch by Cliff Lee to pound in the whole idea.

  • nathan

Bottom 9,Alex is the typing run… GS would be nice..

    • nathan

      * tying

  • http://twitter.com/hopjake Jake H

Lee pitched the game of his career but the Yanks didn’t make him work at all. That at bat by swisher was what they did all night. An 87 mph cutter and it freezes him. An 87 mph pitch shouldn’t freeze any hitter.

    • http://theyankeeuniverse.com Moshe Mandel

If you are sitting on something else, any pitch can freeze you. Lee has been great, just tip your cap and move on.

      • http://twitter.com/hopjake Jake H

Lee has been great but the Yankees helped him out a ton. He hung some pitchers in the first, got through it and never looked back. They never tried to break his routine by stepping out multiple times at an at bat.

  • Pags

Where’s that guy that took a bath in Anaheim’s Disney-waterfall? We could use something to loosen things up here.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

    Fucking Ruiz!

  • CT Yankee
  • JMK aka The Overshare

    We’ve missed you, Brian!

  • ansky

    the icing? FUCK YOU McCarver!

  • http://dinosaursneverexisted.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/melky.jpg Drew

Fuck you Mccarver. The cake and the icing?

  • BigBlueAL

Well Peter Gammons did say the Phillies had the advantage at Catcher with Ruiz over Posada.

Still cant believe he said that last night….

  • Tony

WE PLAY TOMORROW, WE WIN TOMORROW

    • nathan

we play 9th inning, we tie the game there

    • http://dinosaursneverexisted.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/melky.jpg Drew

      I don’t think that’s how it goes.

  • http://bronxbaseballdaily.com Matt ACTY/BBD

    /Angels’d

  • Raf

talk about every bounce going their way. ugh

  • baka nakamura

charlie manuel with the michael jackson glove.

    • HolyGhostClaw

He’s got a little boy chained up in the visitors club house for a celebration snack too.

    • Reggie C.

This [run] is it. (get it).

The game is kinda outta hand now.

  • HolyGhostClaw

FOX keeps freezing up. Maybe it will explode and the rest of the series will be moved over to YES.

    • ShuutoHeat

OR it explodes and shrapnel shoots through Buck+McCarver killing them.

  • http://leegrantphotography.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/madmax.jpg gxpanos

Anyone else giving any thought to Mo here? Keep this at four for the top of the lineup?

  • ansky

hmm…i think i’ve realized the Yankees plan. Let the Phils have this one so they can develop a false sense of confidence…then CRUSH them in then next four games. Cool. I’m down with that.

  • Souter Fell

    i gotta punch out,

  • baka nakamura

    yikes.

  • JMK aka The Overshare

Well at least we got to see Brian. I’ve missed him.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dougchu Doug

    …yeah Bruney doesn’t have it.

  • ansky

Heh, anyone else still glad Bruney’s on the WS roster?

  • BigBlueAL

I didnt say anything when he started the inning, but seriously what the fuck was Bruney doing pitching tonight????

  • http://dinosaursneverexisted.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/melky.jpg Drew

This is bummer fest 2009. We will score some runs in the 9th though.

  • Raf

yeah Bruney was the “hope he can make it work in this spot” move. stop them here Coke.

  • Hova

Damn, where has the bullpen gone? This is depressing.
