We lost the first 2 games in that one. This staff isn’t as deep as the ’96 staff.
In the 4 games the Yankees won in the ’96 WS, they started guys with ERAs of 2.88 (Cone), 4.68 (Rogers), 3.87 (Pettitte), 4.68 (Key). I like our chances better with Pettitte, CC and AJ.
One small detail the 09 Phillies are alot better ball club than the 96 Braves.

It’s one game, I’m not overreacting. But, why the fuck do you use Bruney right there? He hasn’t pitched in years, it was only 4-0. I do not understand that move, whatsoever. And if someone can defend it to me, i’d be shocked. You had joba, ace, and coke out there. Wtf.
But Lee has just been ridiculous. 2-0, 5-0, 8-0, doesn’t matter the way he’s pitching.

Bruney hasn’t pitched in a live game in a long time. You need to get him work if you ever want to use him, and there isn’t going to be a lower leverage situation than this. The hope would be that he works out his rust and can be effective in a future appearance.
And 4 runs in the 9th is a big lead.

As frustrating as this game has been I’m not too worried which is unlike me. I like the Yankees chances against the rest of the Philly rotation and I really think this offense will wake up for the rest of the series. Yankees will even it up tomorrow. Go Yankees!

Hopefully this lights a little fire under them. They came out pretty flat. Lee had a lot to do that but their at bats were pretty poor all night. BP had an epic fail and other then Jeter no one seemed to have a good at bat.
Also the home plate ump had the most unpredicatable zone I’ve ever seen.

I watch a ton. I don’t mind if a guy has a wide zone or a narrow one. You just have to be consistent for everyone. Ump wasn’t at all.
I agree. The most annoying part was when he called a pitch in the exact same spot a ball for Hughes, then a strike for Marte, then a ball for Robertson – all in the same inning.
That guy in the 8th was all over the zone. What’s funny is that Lee’s zone was pretty consistent all night but the Yankee BP had a changing one.

Girardi just completely misplayed that. Bringing in Bruney is essentially conceding the game. That’s not that terrible- i don’t think any of us felt very good about it going into that inning. However, once he is in you must recognize that you have conceded. You must leave him out there, good or bad. Pulling him when he starts to predictably suck is not the right move. We have now shown them almost our entire bullpen. Did Utley and Howard need to see our second lefty already? The mop-up guy is not in there to help you win. He’s in there to mop up, and it won’t look pretty. Pulling the mop up guy only creates an even worse mess.

This is obviously subjective because I don’t have the memory to recall every pitch to Tex but it seems as though his pitch selection has been quite poor in the playoffs.

So people reference 96 – the big difference between this team and 96 is that the 96 team could hit good pitching. This team feasts on bad pitching, even bad performances by good pitchers like Beckett, but they struggle when a pitcher throws strikes.
Does that mean their approach is wrong because they are waiting on a mistake or do they just not know how to adjust to a pitcher throwing strikes?
no im sure that the 9 guys in the lineup, who have all had success at the major league level, have made multiple All Star games and are some of best players at their positions, cannot adjust to a pitcher throwing strikes. they must have skipped that class in the minors.

This isn’t just 1 game. Too many guys have been sucking ass the entire post season- it was fine against the Twins becasue they just weren’t very good. Against LA dominant pitching and bad D carried us.. CC already has a L and the O still looks like shit.
There isn’t a magic switch they can just turn on. Any life from teh O and I’d feel better, but this has been on going.

Not so much because of Lee though. I voted in the poll for the Yanks in 6, expecting those two losses to come most probably in Lee’s starts.
Hughes’ mechanical problem still doesn’t seem to be fixed, which is unfortunate. I’d rather see him get hit than doling out BBs.
And I was wondering while I was watching what you guys thought about bringing in Bruney before JOba in the 9th? The game was at a manageable 4 run deficit coming in, and I figured Joba as being higher on the BP depth list than Bruney.
Perhaps Joe was trying to see what he had in Bruney for the postseason, being that he hasn’t pitched in a while, but it doesn’t seem appropriate. I mean, if it was a laugher, I get it, you can explore that for the information of it. But when a slam could tie it? In that case, I’ll point out the incredibly small sample size combined with the higher quality of starting pitching.
Bright Side: CC pitched a great game, the Captain is hitting, the Yankees did not give up, the Phillies only have one Cliff Lee on long rest.
Dark side: Bullpen worries for the Yankees, Bullpen rested for the Phillies, Tex, Swish, and Arod looked overmatched at the plate, McCarver and Buck are still talking.
CC did not pitch a great game. He was alright but not great. Even though he only gave up two runs (on meatballs), he missed his spots for about half of his start.
I’ll give the Phillies 2 runs on any other night vs. the Yankees lineup. CC was not his best – but he was still great.
Did he get the win? No. Therefore he was shit.

I’m not trying to be a downer, but he was simply good, not great. Great would be 8 innings, a few scattered hits, 10 ks and a run or less. He just wasn’t that sharp. His pitch count was high, he was erratic in the early innings, found his groove, but still made mistakes. His performance should have been good enough for us to win, but it wasn’t great. We seem to have different standards.

Lee outpitched CC. Thats fine. One ace outduels another. It just shows this is at least a 6 game series and our big advantage in SP in games 2-3 better be taken advantage of.
The real worry is Clueless Joe not going to Coke in the 8th to face Ibanez with the game still 2-0 and winnable.

Because Ibanez crushed lefties this year, and Robertson has a reverse platoon split. Basically Ibanez hit lefties better than righties this year, and Robertson got lefties out more than righties.
He takes Robertson out when kendricks up but leaves him in for Ibanez. A lefty. That has to be Cokes batter especially after Robertson walks Werth.
Did you not read what I just said? Ibanez is better against lefties. Robertson is great against lefties. It was the right move. The fact that Joe made the wrong move with Robertson last week doesnt change that.
Kendrick is better against power pitcher like Robertson than junkballers like Aceves. And the move basically worked – he got a (relatively) weak groundball. It’s not like Kendrick crushed it.
Girardi always plays the better matchup numbers wise. Sometimes it takes a while to realize what those numbers are.

I have no real issue with Matsui there. He was basically screwed because of how the ball was hit. If he heads back to the bag, Rollins lets it bounce and turns the DP. If he stays off the bad, Rollins catches it and turns the DP.
If/when Tex starts hitting, this series is over. He just has to get that stroke back.

Everyone calm the fuck down. These are the defending World Champs for christ’s sake and they just rolled out one of the best in the biz. We routinely lost game 1′s during our dynasty runs.
