In the 4 games the Yankees won in the ’96 WS, they started guys with ERAs of 2.88 (Cone), 4.68 (Rogers), 3.87 (Pettitte), 4.68 (Key). I like our chances better with Pettitte, CC and AJ.
There ya go Mike. I knew you didn’t lose the faith, brother!
Honestly, I just can’t let myself get stressed over this game. Life is too short, this series is too long, and this Yankee team is too good to let that happen.
It’s one game, I’m not overreacting. But, why the fuck do you use Bruney right there? He hasn’t pitched in years, it was only 4-0. I do not understand that move, whatsoever. And if someone can defend it to me, i’d be shocked. You had joba, ace, and coke out there. Wtf.
But Lee has just been ridiculous. 2-0, 5-0, 8-0, doesn’t matter the way he’s pitching.
Bruney hasn’t pitched in a live game in a long time. You need to get him work if you ever want to use him, and there isn’t going to be a lower leverage situation than this. The hope would be that he works out his rust and can be effective in a future appearance.
As frustrating as this game has been I’m not too worried which is unlike me. I like the Yankees chances against the rest of the Philly rotation and I really think this offense will wake up for the rest of the series. Yankees will even it up tomorrow. Go Yankees!
Yankees are averaging 5.33 runs per game in the post season. They averaged 5.64 runs per game in the regular season. So the offense is basically the same as in the regular season.
Im still trying to figure out how you bring in a pitcher who wasnt good enough to make the ALDS and ALCS roster into the 9th inning of a game you are only trailing by 4 runs.
Hopefully this lights a little fire under them. They came out pretty flat. Lee had a lot to do that but their at bats were pretty poor all night. BP had an epic fail and other then Jeter no one seemed to have a good at bat.
Also the home plate ump had the most unpredicatable zone I’ve ever seen.
I agree. The most annoying part was when he called a pitch in the exact same spot a ball for Hughes, then a strike for Marte, then a ball for Robertson – all in the same inning.
Can someone answer me this? Why in the world with 2 outs, base-loaded in the 8th would you keep Mariano lounging in the bullpen? Bringing in Brian Bruney – I think it was established that he sucked months ago – is essentially waving the white flag.
Not very concerned. Very atypical game from the Yanks tonight. Shoddy bullpen, dead bats, baserunning fail. Cant see that happening too often the rest of the series.
no matter what happens here and in the bottom of the inning, its just one game. seriously, thats it. this team didnt win 103 games to just crawl in a hole
The biggest thing you take away from this fiasco is Hughes, he can’t be used in any mor high leverage situations. From now on the 8th inning guy is Joba and the Yanks are going to have to take a chance and start CC on three days rest.
Girardi just completely misplayed that. Bringing in Bruney is essentially conceding the game. That’s not that terrible- i don’t think any of us felt very good about it going into that inning. However, once he is in you must recognize that you have conceded. You must leave him out there, good or bad. Pulling him when he starts to predictably suck is not the right move. We have now shown them almost our entire bullpen. Did Utley and Howard need to see our second lefty already? The mop-up guy is not in there to help you win. He’s in there to mop up, and it won’t look pretty. Pulling the mop up guy only creates an even worse mess.
you run into a buzz saw it happens sometimes nothing you can do about it but the pen looked just terrible nothing good about tonight thank god the series is 7 games
I was at Game Six, and my friend and I were debating… I know it sounds blasphemous, but after he retires in 10 years or so…do we rename it “Jeter Stadium”?
Even though my brain tells me this is good, I can’t even force a smile. I’m also drunk and it’s taking me a very long time to find the letters on my keyboard.
I’m so depressed I’m looking forward to work tomorrow.
This is obviously subjective because I don’t have the memory to recall every pitch to Tex but it seems as though his pitch selection has been quite poor in the playoffs.
No memory needed, just watch his AB’s tonight, they are all consistent with his approach in the ALCS. Only a missed location by the pitcher has leant itself to a hit.
By mismanaging the bullpen you mean he USED his bullpen? Because I’ve got news for ya’…it’s going to happen again. Oh, and there’s a good chance the result will be a lot better.
I feel Joe should go with his gut. I’m not pulling some hindsight shit. I’m just saying, if a dude like Joba came in(whether he got the job done or not) people would whine. It’s just so annoying how so many people must always find a reason to blame the manager rather than say, “hey, the player fucked up, Joe made the right move.”
All the cliff jumpers, calm down. If we lose tomorrow and look this bad then MAYBE we can almost start to panic. We faced a very very good pitcher on top of his game tonight. We will be ok. We are a very good team. They havent let us down yet. It’s always rough after a night like this, but I trust them. Let’s go Yankees!!!!
Meh, I think the Yanks were just bummed that Jay-Z performance was pushed back and it showed in their play. Wait til tomorrow…they’re going to put on a show!
So people reference 96 – the big difference between this team and 96 is that the 96 team could hit good pitching. This team feasts on bad pitching, even bad performances by good pitchers like Beckett, but they struggle when a pitcher throws strikes.
Does that mean their approach is wrong because they are waiting on a mistake or do they just not know how to adjust to a pitcher throwing strikes?
no im sure that the 9 guys in the lineup, who have all had success at the major league level, have made multiple All Star games and are some of best players at their positions, cannot adjust to a pitcher throwing strikes. they must have skipped that class in the minors.
We kinda HAVE TO get to Pedro Martinez tomorrow night. All pressure is on the Yankee Lineup to come up big. AJ Burnett has to keep the Phillies down to a pair of runs like CC did tonight. Hope i’m not asking for too much.
This isn’t just 1 game. Too many guys have been sucking ass the entire post season- it was fine against the Twins becasue they just weren’t very good. Against LA dominant pitching and bad D carried us.. CC already has a L and the O still looks like shit.
There isn’t a magic switch they can just turn on. Any life from teh O and I’d feel better, but this has been on going.
Not so much because of Lee though. I voted in the poll for the Yanks in 6, expecting those two losses to come most probably in Lee’s starts.
Hughes’ mechanical problem still doesn’t seem to be fixed, which is unfortunate. I’d rather see him get hit than doling out BBs.
And I was wondering while I was watching what you guys thought about bringing in Bruney before JOba in the 9th? The game was at a manageable 4 run deficit coming in, and I figured Joba as being higher on the BP depth list than Bruney.
Perhaps Joe was trying to see what he had in Bruney for the postseason, being that he hasn’t pitched in a while, but it doesn’t seem appropriate. I mean, if it was a laugher, I get it, you can explore that for the information of it. But when a slam could tie it? With all the late inning heroics we’ve seen so far this postseason, I wasn’t really sweating it until that 5th run was given up. *Not true I was sweating it for Hughes*
Well, chalk it up to Lee’s dominance at any rate, and at least the Yankees have still never been shut out in Game 1 of the World Series.
they’ve been doing this lack of hitting off starters ALL postseason long. And now, it’s ridiculous the only trustworthy guy outside of Mo is Damaso marte..
This is the only game where they haven’t scored at least 4 runs.
In the postseason you see the best starters. Pedro will not give length tomorrow. Even if he pitches well for 5+, we expose the soft underbelly of the Phillies’ BP.
Bright Side: CC pitched a great game, the Captain is hitting, the Yankees did not give up, the Phillies only have one Cliff Lee on long rest.
Dark side: Bullpen worries for the Yankees, Bullpen rested for the Phillies, Tex, Swish, and Arod looked overmatched at the plate, McCarver and Buck are still talking.
CC did not pitch a great game. He was alright but not great. Even though he only gave up two runs (on meatballs), he missed his spots for about half of his start.
I’m not trying to be a downer, but he was simply good, not great. Great would be 8 innings, a few scattered hits, 10 ks and a run or less. He just wasn’t that sharp. His pitch count was high, he was erratic in the early innings, found his groove, but still made mistakes. His performance should have been good enough for us to win, but it wasn’t great. We seem to have different standards.
I’d just like to add the following, because I have nowhere else to put it:
Pete Abe was always an a-hole, but he was our a-hole. Now he’s just an a-hole, and I want to smack him in his face. In lieu of that, I will take 8 IP 1 ER from AJ tomorrow night.
As soon as the postseason began I took him off my twitter feed and decided not to check in on his blog. Post-LoHud he’s just spewing forth opinions to amuse himself without the small filter he seemed to have before.
Lee outpitched CC. Thats fine. One ace outduels another. It just shows this is at least a 6 game series and our big advantage in SP in games 2-3 better be taken advantage of.
The real worry is Clueless Joe not going to Coke in the 8th to face Ibanez with the game still 2-0 and winnable.
Why even have 2 lefty’s? Isnt that the exact spot hes there for?
Because Ibanez crushed lefties this year, and Robertson has a reverse platoon split. Basically Ibanez hit lefties better than righties this year, and Robertson got lefties out more than righties.
Did you not read what I just said? Ibanez is better against lefties. Robertson is great against lefties. It was the right move. The fact that Joe made the wrong move with Robertson last week doesnt change that.
Kendrick is better against power pitcher like Robertson than junkballers like Aceves. And the move basically worked – he got a (relatively) weak groundball. It’s not like Kendrick crushed it.
Girardi always plays the better matchup numbers wise. Sometimes it takes a while to realize what those numbers are.
Thats something that I hope will prove useful for us. He’s got control and all, but I’m not sure he has the kind of stamina for pitching on 3 days rest.
I picked Yankees in 7 and a dog fight and don’t like AJ tomorrow so they might go down 0-2.
By then everyone will be off the bandwagon and that’s ok by me it just makes it that much sweeter when they win.
I just don’t like the way AJ lines up against these guys they eat mistakes fastballs for lunch. I hate Pedro, but put him on stage and he just figures shit out he is going to give them length. I just hope it becomes a battle of bullpens.
What really pissed me off tonight is McCarver’s lil hack weezing laugh when Lee caught the pop up like a half ass douche. That was a double WTF for me, both the catch and the laugh.
Ugh they should print a gigantic poster of Lee making that half ass showing-you-up catch and tape it in the clubhouse, then play a loop of McCarver’s fucking laugh after that catch to remind them the humiliation brought onto them by fucking McCarver and Lee.
I’m not hating. Just stating the obvious. Cliff Lee owned the Yankees tonight. Granted I worded it a little differently, but I think you guys got the point.
I’d be nervous too, but I sure as hell wouldn’t be giving up on these guys. They were the comeback kids all year, and they’ll win tomorrow to square this fucker up. Believe it.
I have no real issue with Matsui there. He was basically screwed because of how the ball was hit. If he heads back to the bag, Rollins lets it bounce and turns the DP. If he stays off the bad, Rollins catches it and turns the DP.
Everyone calm the fuck down. These are the defending World Champs for christ’s sake and they just rolled out one of the best in the biz. We routinely lost game 1′s during our dynasty runs.
We need to roll out Mo for more than one inning this series, it’s pretty obvious the bridge is weak right now…
I’m gonna eat pie to get over my 24 hr depression
Lets keep them pies ready
Let’s use the WHOLE bullpen. Bring in Joba next. Then Gaudin. Then Mo.
If they don’t win this game, I’ve got just one thing to say: Remember ’96.
Andy remembers.
It has that feel doesn’t it? Lee is pitching like Maddux and Smoltz all in one.
We’re not at ’96 desperation levels yet.
Lets hope we win the next one if we can’t pull this one out.
We lost the first 2 games in that one. This staff isn’t as deep as the ’96 staff.
In the 4 games the Yankees won in the ’96 WS, they started guys with ERAs of 2.88 (Cone), 4.68 (Rogers), 3.87 (Pettitte), 4.68 (Key). I like our chances better with Pettitte, CC and AJ.
One small detail the 09 Phillies are alot better ball club than the 96 Braves.
And 1978 – Down first two to LA Dodgers – Won the next four straight!!!
our bats could use some of that cialis tonight.
There ya go Mike. I knew you didn’t lose the faith, brother!
Honestly, I just can’t let myself get stressed over this game. Life is too short, this series is too long, and this Yankee team is too good to let that happen.
That.
so utley is now mr october. fuck off buck.
sorry meant that to be a seperate post.
I agree, why couldn’t Robertson come out again
Bruney hasn’t pitched in a live game in a long time. You need to get him work if you ever want to use him, and there isn’t going to be a lower leverage situation than this. The hope would be that he works out his rust and can be effective in a future appearance.
And 4 runs in the 9th is a big lead.
This bullpen and dead offense is going to lead to an early exit
What a surprise I NEVER see you around.
An early exit from what, exactly? It’s the World Series.
An early exit from the world series?
Please sir, kindly kill yourself.
As frustrating as this game has been I’m not too worried which is unlike me. I like the Yankees chances against the rest of the Philly rotation and I really think this offense will wake up for the rest of the series. Yankees will even it up tomorrow. Go Yankees!
Do the Yankees really only have one reliable reliever?
That thought just hit me, and it’s depressing.
Relax. We’ll be seeing plenty of the Phils bullpen.
They ain’t doing what Lee did all series.
Both of these teams have weaknesses.
Game 1 would be nice to win, but confidence level – 10.
Until the playoffs started, we had a few. Of course, before the playoffs started we also hit the snot out of the ball.
Yankees are averaging 5.33 runs per game in the post season. They averaged 5.64 runs per game in the regular season. So the offense is basically the same as in the regular season.
how about an earned run comparison ???
Im still trying to figure out how you bring in a pitcher who wasnt good enough to make the ALDS and ALCS roster into the 9th inning of a game you are only trailing by 4 runs.
damn it now jorge’s hr (after the a-rod GS) is only gonna tie it. we’re gonna have to wait till the 14th till swish knocks one out ftw. lame
I do not like the idea of AJ pitching under stress in Game 2
Just pray we get great AJ tomorrow and not “wheels fly off” AJ
He’s going against Pedro Martinez.
There ya go – feel better.
Also the home plate ump had the most unpredicatable zone I’ve ever seen.
You must not watch a lot of baseball.
I watch a ton. I don’t mind if a guy has a wide zone or a narrow one. You just have to be consistent for everyone. Ump wasn’t at all.
I agree. The most annoying part was when he called a pitch in the exact same spot a ball for Hughes, then a strike for Marte, then a ball for Robertson – all in the same inning.
That guy in the 8th was all over the zone. What’s funny is that Lee’s zone was pretty consistent all night but the Yankee BP had a changing one.
i’m sure they all want pie, but as the saying goes, you can’t always get what you want. =/
But if you try sometimes…
and we don’t need this game
You just might find . . .
you get what you neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed!
And in 96 we lost MUCH worse than this in game 1. So no big deal. Size of deficit = irrelevant.
And Jim Leyritz IS available…
Uggh…I was there. It was an ugly night. It all worked out well, tho. Here’s to happy endings!
DP and get out of it
“By Mike Axisa- Who wants pie?”
Love the optimism, Mike. You folks from Valt-Minor are hardy souls.
Forgive my ignorance but I have no idea what Valt-Minor means and I’m curious what the heck you’re talking about.
http://riveraveblues.com/2009/.....ent-653076
That’s some quality entertainment right there.
ah-ha, Star Trek-based inside joke. Now it all makes sense.
He’s Maltese, hence the joke.
Is anyone else wondering what Bruney has pictures of Girardi doing? They must be awfully bad.
I bet he has pictures of Girardi eating ice cream in the clubhouse.
nah applejacks
That’s fucking hilarious.
IETC
Meh. Figured a W this game was highly improbable anyway.
Let’s just see how he looks.
Was Victorino talking shit when he got up? Cause he was directing it at Posada.
Can someone answer me this? Why in the world with 2 outs, base-loaded in the 8th would you keep Mariano lounging in the bullpen? Bringing in Brian Bruney – I think it was established that he sucked months ago – is essentially waving the white flag.
You want to bring Mo in to a losing cause?
Also, he’s letting lots of guys get their feet wet in the World Series, get into the flow of things. It could pay off in the coming games.
2-0 may have been overcome or tied in the 9th.
Howard against a lefty here. The Phils might get negative runs in this AB.
Now all we need is one and and a half grand slam home runs.
Well I’ll say this, this loss aint as sad and depressing as the Knicks game tonight.
So outside of CC, no pitcher can find the strike zone.
Worst stat of the night – Yankees 0-1 with RISP. Just 1.
Bruney and Marte found the strike zone.
Moral of the story: You can’t fail with RISP if there aren’t any RISP.
All you need is love…all you need is loooooove… loves all you need..loves all you need….
FUCK YOU BLACKBERRY COMMERCIAL. FUCK YOU.
I don’t think I’d hate it so much if they actually showed a BlackBerry in it.
I don’t think I’d hate it so much if it wasn’t a douchebag indie band covering the Beatles ironically in it.
Not very concerned. Very atypical game from the Yanks tonight. Shoddy bullpen, dead bats, baserunning fail. Cant see that happening too often the rest of the series.
The Yanks will hit six solo shots to win the game.
2b, 1b, 1b, Hr, 2b, out, out, out.
The momentum would be ours.
Think of it this way: We’re icing Lee.
no matter what happens here and in the bottom of the inning, its just one game. seriously, thats it. this team didnt win 103 games to just crawl in a hole
I think Buck has a mini-gasm whenever he says the name Cliff Lee.
Matsui and Swisher have been doing nothing lately, not to mention Tex. These bats have got to wake up soon.
Matsui got a single…
And then played Mr Magoo wandering around the infield to get doubled up
that was funny
Meh when one ground ball single is your highlight, things arent great
Jete had a double.
I like Matsui and Tex against Pedro. Not sure about Swish.
Sigh.
Can we hit the reset button, please?
Make that seven solo shots.
It’ll happen.
What an absolute bomb from top to bottom. 8 1/2 innings of shit.
I’m conceding defeat. Fuck optimism, I’m taking realism here.
The thing is, now is the realistic time to do it.
You don’t concede defeat when it’s 2-0 in the 7th. 6-0 in the bottom of the 9th I feel is appropriate.
oh you are so going to catch shit for that statement. be prepared.
Yayyyy! that play at the plate will inspire us to victory!
SCREW YOU VICTORINO
God, our highlight of the game is a well-executed cutoff play.
this game has been teh sux0r
ohle!!! (sp?)
Was Victorino talking shit when he got up? Cause he was directing it at Posada……
Greedy Phillies. Idiots. Let’s tie this up.
Wow, I did not think the Yankees would look this bad, let alone lose. Just an ass kicking tonight.
We hand em out a whole lot more than we take them.
Frustrated but very excited for game 2
If it only takes 6 runs to qualify as an ‘asskicking’ I will take that.
I don’t care about the loss or lack of offense. The bullpen is the most concerning thing of the night. All these guys looked terrible tonight.
Nothing Girardi can do about this, so I hope the idiotic press lays off.
You know the friggin Media is going to jump on Joe G, regardless.
Marte did his job. outside of him there was nobody that stepped up.
Damn, six runs.
We can’t pull this off. It would be, like, one of the greatest comebacks of all time.
There’s no way.
We’re done pause NOT!
/borat’d
tomorrow AJ will set the tone by hitting Utley in the hip with a 95mph FB. Yanks bats will wake up.
I’m ready to go extreme brightside right now:
The Yankees scored six runs with two outs in Game Five of the ALCS. It can happen.
From your lips to Mo’s ears.
We face Pedro Martinez tomorrow night.
That’s a bright spot.
Jeterian!
WHO BUT?!
yes they did
Every fan that left the stadium early should never be allowed to attend a World Series game at Yankees Stadium again.
Seriously, what a bunch of ingrates.
Okay maybe they are reading RAB…
4 baserunners all night is just ridiculous. end this shutout.
My brother called me in the third inning and kept me from going on a mindless homicidal rage for most of the game until my phone died.
So now it’s up to you all to keep people alive.
why should we when our team can?
Pedro tomorrow night.
~What’s your name? Who’s your daddy?~
Thank you. I am almost functional again.
PeteAbe
What’s more embarrassing, how the Yankees played or how their fans deserted the Stadium after the seventh inning?
I am going with the performance.
It’s a tough call.
I’d go with people who paid a lot of money to watch this game, especially a team with lot’s of comebacks
maybe PeteAbe should concern himself with why no one showed up for Game 1 in Fenway
haha quotes like that remind me why i love RAB more than any other yankee site
The biggest thing you take away from this fiasco is Hughes, he can’t be used in any mor high leverage situations. From now on the 8th inning guy is Joba and the Yanks are going to have to take a chance and start CC on three days rest.
Woo, a runner.
Victorino FAIL!
Rally! Rally! Rally!
Joe Buck and McCarver are making this game soooooo much worse.
they really are
Here we go!!!
Let’s avoid the shut out
Here we go!
Dj’s third hit of the night. What a captain! ‘cept nobody picked up the slack.
Can we get Lee’s pitch count up? Small victories.
MVP of Game One = Cliff Lee’s gum. Same stick the whole game.
Haha, IETC.
P is for PeteAbe and Pandering:
http://www.boston.com/sports/b.....roids.html
PeteAbe is dead to me. Dropkick Murphys? Fucking seriously, Pete?
I was at Game Six, and my friend and I were debating… I know it sounds blasphemous, but after he retires in 10 years or so…do we rename it “Jeter Stadium”?
Heh. you don’t really do that with players, no one has. and no way in hell you do it when your the new york yankees
OK…. then how about…. “New Jeter”? The City that borders “New Jersey”. rather alliterative, no?
BRING IN LIDGE!
We have a pulse.
I like the start of this inning.
You know what would really hurt, is if we rally and finish with 4 or 5 runs. Talk about frustration…
I might be OK with the Paul O’Neill Rule coming into effect.
boy those tack ons were huge yay Brian Bruney
phil came up first. me no likey teh favoritism
How pissed will we all be if they score 4 this inning
Well, it took eight innings, but they are timing Lee nicely now.
Hehehehe.
WE WANT LIDGE.
Finally, we show some life.
Why the hell didn’t they start this in the 1st, 4th , 7th?
Nice job boys. Let’s get a few more good AB’s. You probably wont make 6 runs, but get the scale moving in the opposite direction.
As Bon Jovi says:
“Cliff Lee’s Love is like bad medicine”
Tex 3-run shot now!
Even though my brain tells me this is good, I can’t even force a smile. I’m also drunk and it’s taking me a very long time to find the letters on my keyboard.
I’m so depressed I’m looking forward to work tomorrow.
Help. I need it.
Good, more pitches for Lee.
Let’s make his arm nice and sore.
20-pitch AB here, Tex.
This is obviously subjective because I don’t have the memory to recall every pitch to Tex but it seems as though his pitch selection has been quite poor in the playoffs.
You could put it on a tee right now and there’s a chance he’d swing through it.
No memory needed, just watch his AB’s tonight, they are all consistent with his approach in the ALCS. Only a missed location by the pitcher has leant itself to a hit.
Hes pulling an Arod, trying to bust out of a slump with huge swings at everything
BYE BYE SHUTOUT!
WOOOOOOO
The fact that Tex cant catch 85 is a terrible sign
NO SHUTOUT!!!
We got this in 6!!!
A run!!!
Shutout GONE!
I feel better already.
No whammy. No whammy. No whammy. No shut out!
Stick that cake up your ass McCarver.
And the icing.
Let’s hope that cake has habanero icing.
Lidge! Lidge! Lidge!
We’re a 5 run HR away from tying!
We need MTV Rock and Jock rules
FUND-AH-MENTALZ.
Jeter >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Rollins
Fuckin Utley and his great D. Got an out. If Tex got a single, we would have came back I think.
Shutout over. Respect redeemed.
Now lets make Lee break a sweat
TEIXEIRA!!!!
5 MO RUNZ!
Those bullpen runs are looming large…
Paul O’Neill theory FTW.
Fucking gay. That should of just made it up the middle… Boo you Phillies great up the middle defense.
breaking up the shutout makes me considerably happier. we have the momentum now…kind of
Bench swisher tomorrow?
Nice night by Arod… I sure hope his asshole hasn’t re puckered
Because Hinske and Gardner are such better options, right?
anything is better than nothing, right?
Right now… YES
I have to agree.
Why not give Hinske a shot. It’s no big deal.
didn’t mean to be confrontational with my yankee fans but I’m seriously pissed every time I see swisher up.
It’s getting to that, “Why is Lee still in?” time of the game, especially if they’re serious about short rest for him.
good let him burn out the arm.
DAMN AROD. You missed your pitch!
Manuel is really pushing Lee to get the CG.
Derek Jeter 3 of the Yankees 6 hits. Bad sign.
Pedro Martinez, Cole Hamels, and Joe Blanton are NOT Cliff Lee.
yep.
Arod’s 3 Ks are an even worse sign. He’s the only guy hitting with power till tonight.
A-Rod you unclutch bastard
He wasn’t in a position to tie the game so he didn’t really try.
Jesus, Alex. He’s looked pretty crappy tonight.
This whole game is sad trombone.
So’s your face.
Looks like the old A-Rod is back
i hope this is sarcasm. otherwise your a real jackass
Damnit Alex, stop yo chasin man.
Can’t wait to hear the “A-Rod’s choking” bullshit tomorrow.
well at least the shutout is gone..
Like Whitey Ford being pelted with pretzels, this is a black day for baseball.
God damn it, A-Rod.
You shoulda channeled the long lost stat-padder in you.
btw yeesh bad night for a-rod
Kate stopped putting out.
no way that pitch was 99mph!
hahahahahahah 99 on the gun?
God I wanna pay a visit to fucking Rollins and wipe that fucking smirk off his face. He really pisses me off.
You sound like a met fan
If only the bullpen didn’t blow this game up.
Lee is ruined or wounded for game 4, no?
Joe Blanton is just as good as Lee. We’re toast!!
f@#*@&#@* this game.
Nice to see that Cluless mismanaged the bull pen and his line up once again. Costing the Yankees another game.
By mismanaging the bullpen you mean he USED his bullpen? Because I’ve got news for ya’…it’s going to happen again. Oh, and there’s a good chance the result will be a lot better.
Not bringing in Coke to face Ibanez in the 8th is unforgivable.
Why even have 2 lefty’s!
This is batshit insane.
Robertson >>>>> Coke in that situation no doubt about it.
Got what we wanted, a ground ball – just in the wrong spot.
Lee’s getting some more jizz on that cap tonight.
Is that how a lady speaks?
That’s how I like my woman.
Wah Wah Waaaaahhhhhp. Let’s get Game 2.
The annoying thing is that everyone will act like the phillies will own us, but really it was just lee. also-lay off the breaking balls
Oh, Jorge. You look as bad as I used to on curveballs.
whatever they get them tomorrow. Lee isnt pitching like that again this series.
Joe and McCarver just jizzed on each other.
It’s only gay if you make eye contact.
You’ve never had a gay fantasy?
Two guys in a hot tub?
/South Park’d
Cliff Lee will allow Pedro to chew his gum tomorrow.
Let the Cashman Girardi firing watch begin.
Let the Cashman Girardi firing
watchretard circus begin.(fixed that for ya, bro)
Tim McCarver is quite arroused.
Well at least that ass kicking is over.
Cannot wait to hear the post game from Girardi. Bullpen blew this one to the out of reach point.
Our lack of hitting blew this one out of reach.
Besides, what do you want Girardi to do? Throw out Gaudin, Aceves and Joba instead? Girardi had VERY LITTLE to do with the Yankees losing.
How about putting in Coke to face Ibanez in the 8th?
Down 2-0 is a little different than 4-0.
How many times has Buck said in sort form “cliff lee”. I think he will have it tattoed on his sorry white ass
Win tomorrow.
This was fucking disgusting
Rollins will be right if Tex, Damon, Posada, Swisher, Matsui, and Cano start hitting. Embarassing showing in the forst game of teh WS.
I’d also like to that the bullpen for taking a decent CC start and wiping your asses with it.
Good news: Cliff Lee just pitched what likely will be the best pitching performance of the ’09 series.
Bad News: Cliff Lee just pitched … (you get it).
Frustrating? Yeah, no question. Cause for concern? Only if the concern is for an endless amount of bitching and moaning.
Yankees won’t quit as a team so I can’t quit as a fan.
I’ve learned to never underestimate the depth of self-loathing in certain Yankees fans.
Win the next two and this never happened
Oh well. Lee was good. We’ll get ‘em tomorrow.
Confidence Level: We’re still gonna fuckin kill ‘em.
Amen.
This.
Definitely – Feast on Pedro – “Who’s Your Daddy?” The offense is so due to break out.
Just to throw it out there…
Lee threw about 120 pitches tonight and is brutally unaccustomed to pitching on short rest. Methinks Game 4 will be a different story.
To bed.
Hughes kinda dicked us tonight.. It’s funny though, a lot of people would’ve bitched if Joe went with someone else rather than Hughes.
Real question: Can Joe trust Phil to get a big out going forward? Kid looks fucking rattled.
As they should, right? Hughes is still our best option not named Mo, right? At what point does he cease to become our best option?
Seriously, I’m not patronizing, I just want to know.
I was in favor of robertson…now idk. Joba?
I feel Joe should go with his gut. I’m not pulling some hindsight shit. I’m just saying, if a dude like Joba came in(whether he got the job done or not) people would whine. It’s just so annoying how so many people must always find a reason to blame the manager rather than say, “hey, the player fucked up, Joe made the right move.”
He obviously cant trust Hughes. Going to be a long series if someone else doesnt step up quick. Thats you Joba.
amen.
What has he done in the post season beside put runners on base? He looks different right now.
Honestly. I’m not even all that upset.
Cliff Lee looked like Jesus Christ himself out there.
Did Cliff Lee make a deal with the devil?
How can you not be upset after losing Game 1 of the WS?
Cause I don’t freak out. It was Cliff Lee, not Pedro Martinez.
“All that upset” = being rational about the loss.
boo. go get pedro tomorrow
Pretty bad performance by 8 guys on the O. Jeter was the only one who stepped up.
Meh, I think the Yanks were just bummed that Jay-Z performance was pushed back and it showed in their play. Wait til tomorrow…they’re going to put on a show!
And I think we’ve found our answer.
This team hits all pitching. I honestly have no idea what you are talking about.
The 96 team lost the first two games of the WS.
[citation needed]
yeah because the phillies have glavine and smoltz goin in game 2 and 3….
The 96 team lost the first game 12-1.
We kinda HAVE TO get to Pedro Martinez tomorrow night. All pressure is on the Yankee Lineup to come up big. AJ Burnett has to keep the Phillies down to a pair of runs like CC did tonight. Hope i’m not asking for too much.
That’s why we play to win FOUR games!
Woman willing to trade sex for World Series tickets?
Where have you been. She’s a Phillies fan!
FWIW, the Nats weren’t a bad offensive team. You’d think he could do a little offense. Just a little. Like, a smidgeon.
*a little research.
Research is offense! Knowledge is power!
/Reading Rainbow’d
This isn’t just 1 game. Too many guys have been sucking ass the entire post season- it was fine against the Twins becasue they just weren’t very good. Against LA dominant pitching and bad D carried us.. CC already has a L and the O still looks like shit.
There isn’t a magic switch they can just turn on. Any life from teh O and I’d feel better, but this has been on going.
Damn, that was frustrating.
Pedro’s getting annihilated tommorow.
The sins of the daddy…
Hughes got robbed by the umps. He was not as bad as the umps made him look.
According to Brooks…http://tinyurl.com/ykcsewp
Hughes had one strike called a ball, and one ball called a strike.
Oops. Linkage fail.
http://tinyurl.com/ykcsewp
they’ve been doing this lack of hitting off starters ALL postseason long.
Same with Hamels & Blanton.
No problem. Yanks in 6.
Nope. Yanks in 5.
I still think it’s going to be Yanks in 4.
5.33 runs per game going into tonight.
But I suppose facts are irrelevant when they don’t support your point.
My apologies.
In fairness, you did say “off starters”.
I’m off-base, then.
In that case, I’ll point out the incredibly small sample size combined with the higher quality of starting pitching.
I’ll give the Phillies 2 runs on any other night vs. the Yankees lineup. CC was not his best – but he was still great.
Did he get the win? No. Therefore he was shit.
/alex gonzalez’d
I’m not trying to be a downer, but he was simply good, not great. Great would be 8 innings, a few scattered hits, 10 ks and a run or less. He just wasn’t that sharp. His pitch count was high, he was erratic in the early innings, found his groove, but still made mistakes. His performance should have been good enough for us to win, but it wasn’t great. We seem to have different standards.
watching the recap…Charlie “Goober” Manuel laughing in the dugout all game really pisses me off!
I wanted to smack Lee for being a dick and showing the Yanks up with that casual fly ball catch.
I’d lop a nut off for 8 ip 1 er from AJ tomorrow.
No beat writer rooted against the Yanks as much as Pete Abe.
I’ve always hated him because I’m one of Al’s biggest fans.
Same shit now, luckily, I don’t have to read his writing.
Fat bastard was ripping the yankees all night with sarcastic comments on his twitter account. Triple-chinned fcuk.
Yeah, I stopped following him. Tired of the shit he spews.
As soon as the postseason began I took him off my twitter feed and decided not to check in on his blog. Post-LoHud he’s just spewing forth opinions to amuse himself without the small filter he seemed to have before.
So we lost to a good pitcher…I’ll start worrying if Pedro shuts us down
+1
Pedro ’09 = Kazmir ’09
Lee outpitched CC. Thats fine. One ace outduels another. It just shows this is at least a 6 game series and our big advantage in SP in games 2-3 better be taken advantage of.
The real worry is Clueless Joe not going to Coke in the 8th to face Ibanez with the game still 2-0 and winnable.
Why even have 2 lefty’s? Isnt that the exact spot hes there for?
How’s the weather in Brazil this time of year?
To Lanny:
h/t to Jamal
You do realize that Robertson kills LHB and is stingy with the HR, Ibanez has a near-1.000 OPS vs LHP, and Coke is HR prone, yes?
http://twitter.com/JamalG_BB/status/5249709021
Always with a good response J. Can always count on you for useless non baseball comments that add nothing to a discussion. Keep up the good work bud.
I’m a bit star-struck that you even responded.
Because Ibanez crushed lefties this year, and Robertson has a reverse platoon split. Basically Ibanez hit lefties better than righties this year, and Robertson got lefties out more than righties.
He takes Robertson out when kendricks up but leaves him in for Ibanez. A lefty. That has to be Cokes batter especially after Robertson walks Werth.
Will 122 pitches keep Cliff Lee from pitching on short rest?
He hasn’t pitched on short rest ever, but i’m not sure if that means anything.
I hope so though
Thats something that I hope will prove useful for us. He’s got control and all, but I’m not sure he has the kind of stamina for pitching on 3 days rest.
Wanda Sykes is not funny. Just thought I’d add that.
glad we broke the shut out just to break that aura the phils were feeling. tomorrow’s another day.
We got ALL the momentum!
…reaching for bright spots
I picked Yankees in 7 and a dog fight and don’t like AJ tomorrow so they might go down 0-2.
By then everyone will be off the bandwagon and that’s ok by me it just makes it that much sweeter when they win.
AJ will not be out-pitched by our son. Write that shit down.
I’ll be worried at 0-3. Otherwise, it’s full steam ahead.
While it would be an awesome narrative for the Yanks to storm back from 0-2 in Philly, AJ will outperform Pedro tomorrow.
I just don’t like the way AJ lines up against these guys they eat mistakes fastballs for lunch. I hate Pedro, but put him on stage and he just figures shit out he is going to give them length. I just hope it becomes a battle of bullpens.
No worries still in 7.
Yanks in 7
What really pissed me off tonight is McCarver’s lil hack weezing laugh when Lee caught the pop up like a half ass douche. That was a double WTF for me, both the catch and the laugh.
yeah that catch was some bullshit. i hope the yanks remember that.
Ugh they should print a gigantic poster of Lee making that half ass showing-you-up catch and tape it in the clubhouse, then play a loop of McCarver’s fucking laugh after that catch to remind them the humiliation brought onto them by fucking McCarver and Lee.
when he comes to bat at citizens whoever is pitching should plunk that shit-eating grin right off his face.
PWNED.
No sense panicking, but if they let Pedro bend them over like Cliff did tonight, wave goodbye.
Two things have to happen mañana: AJ has to keep his head out of his ass and the Yanks need hit like a team that scored 915 runs this year.
Pathetic tonight. I’m ashamed of them.
I’m ashamed of you.
Nah you ain’t. In order to be ashamed of something/someone you must hold some type of expectation of them.
It’s aight Pop, let the haters hate. They gonna be gone soon enough.
I’m not hating. Just stating the obvious. Cliff Lee owned the Yankees tonight. Granted I worded it a little differently, but I think you guys got the point.
You’re a piece of shit and I’m ashamed of you.
Kidding aside, CC battled and kept them alive. The bats were deplorable tonight.
Wake up tomorrow or goodnight until April.
Even though I do not agree with what you say, I would die for your right to say it.
Goodnight if they’re down 2-0? Were you around in ’96?
Can’t compare now and 96.
We’d all be a little nervous if the team was down 2-0.
It would just be natural, there is nothing wrong with that. I’d probably cry myself to sleep.
I’d be nervous too, but I sure as hell wouldn’t be giving up on these guys. They were the comeback kids all year, and they’ll win tomorrow to square this fucker up. Believe it.
Yes, I was around in ’96.
Yes, I think they will lose the series if down 0-2 after tomorrow.
I feel fairly confident about a win tomorrow though.
Pedro isnt making it past 5 tommorow.
i complain about many girardi moves but he did nothing wrong tonight.
hughes sucked, robertson was a little unlucky, and bruney still stinks.
man who has worse ab’s swisher, tex, or cano. hard to choose between those losers. when is tex going to get some grief???
matsui went to the cano and posada school of baserunning. counting on the hick tommorrow, wow……….
I have no real issue with Matsui there. He was basically screwed because of how the ball was hit. If he heads back to the bag, Rollins lets it bounce and turns the DP. If he stays off the bad, Rollins catches it and turns the DP.
If/when Tex starts hitting, this series is over. He just has to get that stroke back.
cc shook jorge off twice on the 2nd Hr pitch…
cc pitched well just Lee made the yanks looked like little boys..
hughes looks like crap, what excuse does he have?
No excuses for Hughes. I still give him the ball, there’s no reason he shouldn’t pitch well.
I do quibble a bit with Bruney over Joba in the 9th though.
And I’d bring Coke out as the first lefty.
These are minor quibbles though, as the offense was stifled against Lee.
Bruney needs to pitch. I would much rather have him shake off the rust when they’re down 4 in the ninth than if they’re up 1 in the 11th.
remember ’96 they will win
Everyone calm the fuck down. These are the defending World Champs for christ’s sake and they just rolled out one of the best in the biz. We routinely lost game 1′s during our dynasty runs.
We need to roll out Mo for more than one inning this series, it’s pretty obvious the bridge is weak right now…
POSADA better be catching tommorow!!!!
