An overview of the offseason
ByThe offseason is technically underway, but the fun really won’t start until free agents are actually able to sign with new teams, which will happen later this week. Tyler Hissey at Around The Majors looked over the Yanks’ situation heading into winter, noting that they really don’t have many holes to fill. I’m quoted in there as a “Yankees’ prospect expert” by Tyler, which is great for my ego.
Anyway, it’s a lengthy 2,400+ word piece, but it’s worth your time. Check it out.

Speaking of signing people, we need to resign Mo. But the contract must include that someone phisically disables Hoffman up to the point where he can no longer pitch. He’s been pitching for too long and God deserves to be the all time saves leader.
We need to get Jeter signed first.
Agreed. Also I give not a crap about Hoffman or the save record for Mo. Mo is the best, screw the compiling stat. A save is a dumb stat anyway. I wish Girardi brought him in whenever the game was on the line instead of just the 9th. Girardi is too by the book for me. Something he was advertised as not being when he got this job.
PLEASE CASH DO NOT SIGN EITHER HOLLIDAY OR BAY, especially not HOLLIDAY! Trade for a skilled all around OF or sign Damon, Cameron, or whoever else can be had at a one year deal if neither of them fit that category. No more old guys on multiyears unless they are Jeter.
Don’t worry, he won’t. Cash is too smart.
I disagree. If they can get him for less than is projected, Holliday would be perfect.
The only record Mo cares about: 5 rings. Hoffman 0.
I agree with the overall idea that the Yankees shouldn’t be adding on any long term contracts out of this group of free agents. A-Rod, Jeter, Teixeira, CC, AJ, and Cano are going to cost the Yankees about $125 million a year over the next 4 years.
But, I don’t think that Cameron is good enough to replace Damon’s production on offense. Damon was huge for the Yankees at the 2 spot this year and if the Yankees don’t bring him back, or replace him with a similar bat, the lineup is going to be a lot less productive. Posada, Cano, Cameron, Swisher, and Melky could be fine hitting at the bottom of the order, but they need a real 2 hitter batting between Jeter and Teixeira.
what about david dejesus. He would be a HUGE upgrade defensively and would produce equal (maybe slightly less) then Damon did last year. He would also benefit from having Tex and Arod behind him so he very well could produce more than Damon did in 09. We would have him in 09 (4.7 mil) and 2010 (6 mil) and then we can let him go as a free agent. I’m not going to even offer a trade proposal (since it would suck) but the Royals are looking for a centerfielder, catcher and bullpen help… and the yanks do have some young players who could fill those needs for them. I also think Dejesus would be cheaper (in terms of prospects) than someone like Granderson would be.
I wonder if they do an Austin Jackson for Granderson deal and resign Damon to play DH/LF and have Melky get 400+ at bats spelling all 3 OF’s with Gardner as the 5th OF.
