Laird breaks out of his mini-slump

By Mike Axisa

Greg Fertel at Pending Pinstripes sat down for a chat with 2009 4th round pick Adam Warren. It’s pretty funny to see that Warren doesn’t even know where his velocity spike came from last year. Give it a read, it’s well worth your time.

Mike Dunn was the only Yankee farmhand that will participate in the AzFL Rising Stars Showcase. It’s basically the All Star Game.

Here’s two days worth of updates:

AzFL Surprise (10-2 loss to Phoenix on Monday)
Brandon Laird: 2 for 4, 1 R, 1 2B – breaks out of an 0 for 14 slump

AzFL Surprise (6-5 win over Phoenix in 11 innings on Tuesday)
Zach Kroenke: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 3-1 GB/FB – 13 of 23 pitches were strikes (56.5%)
Grant Duff: 1 IP, zeroes, 0-3 GB/FB – 7 of 12 pitches were strikes (58.3%)

Any thoughts on where Warren will end the year? I know he won’t be moved up if he’s struggling, but considering his age and experience I’d expect him to be a quick mover.

Greg F. says:

As he suggests, he’ll start in Tampa next season. I’d expect him to spend most of the year there, but if he pitches well, he’ll probably see a bit of time in Trenton. That’s my take, at least.

Greg F. says:

Thanks for the link, Mike. Gotta thank Warren for making it worth reading, his answers were quite good.

Mike Pop says:

Read that earlier in the day. Enjoyed it. Saw him pitch earlier this year against the HV Renegades.

Question. Will they continue to let him use all those pitches? At some point, the Yankees will want him to toss at least one away, right?

gxpanos says:

I would think. If he doesnt know if one grip will be a slider or a cutter on any given day, I cant imagine them pushing him to keep throwing that pitch…

Buffalo Fil says:

Maybe the extra velocity came because he got ripped in 4 weeks.

Joey says:

Nice interview Greg, very enjoyable read

ADam says:

Totally off subject… but I find it so funny how Sox Fans think Becket is going to negotiate and take Henry’s Low Ball offer.. and give the red sox a discount… Sorry Im focused on the series totally…. and cant wait to get one last win tomorrow

AndrewYF says:

You’re focused on the series totally, but want to talk about a hypothetical contract offer from the Red Sox?

Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

Great article on Warren. I look forward to him pitching for Tampa next year. When he comes to Daytona, I will ask him the questions that people really want to know the answers to. “What city has the best baseball groupies?” “What is the beer of your choice?” “Could you keep it close in an eating contest with The Fat Sanchezes?”

Dustin says:

It’s great that Warren compares himself to Mussina. As a Carolina alum and Yankee fan, when we drafted him, I immediately compared him to Moose (I think either here or on LoHud).
