Mayweather, Yankee Stadium loom for Pacquiao

By Benjamin Kabak

After his Saturday night victory over Miguel Cotto, Manny Pacquiao basked in the glow of his seventh title in seven weight classes. Behind the scenes, the wheels began to turn for a Pacquiao fight against Floyd Mayweather, and if all goes according to plan, the venue for the fight could be none other than Yankee Stadium, reports Greg Bishop. According to The Times, the Yankees are “interested in hosting a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight next spring.” Nothing can be formalized until the two boxers agree to fight each other, and even then, the Yankees would have to make a compelling case for hosting the fight in the new house.

In September, the team first expressed interest in hosting a bout in the Bronx. When Pacquiao and Cotto gathered there for a press conference, we used the opportunity to explore the history of boxing in Yankee Stadium. A Pacquiao/Mayweather headliner would pack the new joint, and Fack Youk would love to see the fight in the stadium as well.

Boxing needs to do whatever it can to get itself some attention. This would be a smart move on their part.

DonnieBaseballHallofFame says:

It would but boxing, at least boxing that anybody cares about is controlled by a handful of individuals who only care about how much cash they can drain from the sport before they die.

For boxing to be anything besides a sideshow with limited interest it needs to do something like this. They also need more free boxing on TV or at least on basic cable. MMA sucks but they know how to market to their mostly mindless fans.

I don’t think it happens at The Stadium because the fighters would have to pay higher taxes as opposed to Vegas or Texas (Cowboy Stadium is another possibility), but man, that would be such an event. Pacquiao-Mayweather is the Super Bowl of boxing and could be the biggest fight ever.

Whatever attracts fine fine Filipino ladies en masse = MONEY.

Not going to happen, as Jason pointed out. Not to mention MGM is going to dish out straight up cash to get the rights to this fight.

Dear God please make this happen!

donttradecano says:

probably wont happen till 2011, but make it happen please.

Mayweather will never fight someone like Manny P. You’d have to pay him 100 mil+. He wants to undefeated too bad to take the chance.

Oh man, this will be an amazing fight at an amazing venue if it actually happens. This is the first time I’m really captivated by a fight since the Tyson days when I was a kid.
