  1. Open thread, yes?

Mo’s an even better pitcher than we thought. I can’t wait to share the data with everyone.

If Mo’s a better pitcher than we thought that means he can not only pitch but can wrestle alligators and juggle flaming torches with his left hand at the same time.

    hooray football! Let’s go Giants!

  3. Dela G says:

Let’s go rockets! I am hoping the rockets can beat the vegas O/U of 36.5

looking at the open thread from last night, people are getting seriously panicky about a world series winning-team, no? Everyone’s talking about the holes next year as if there’s actually some way of properly filling every hole without creating another one. In my opinion, next year’s team will be a little worse than this year’s because this year’s team really didn’t have any down years from anybody. That said, we’ll still be one of the best in baseball, if not the best, if we just stand pat. Not saying we will – we never do, but I can’t see any big moves being made unless something falls into our lap. Maybe someone like Ducsherer, but i doubt anything bigger than that. On the offensive side, I’d like both damon and matsui back, unless we get someone like holliday to take over LF, although i’d still be hesitant about that because we’d deffinitely be overpaying for him. I just feel like one of damon and matsui is going to bust soon, and there’s really no way of predicting which one it will be.

    • Zack says:

Well they played without Alex for 5 weeks
Swisher didnt hit at home at all
      Nady gone all year
      Wang gone all year
Marte gone for 90% of season

      Damon had a great year
Matsui was basically healthy all year
Pettitte being reliable at his age

So it’s not like everything fell into place for this team. Things will equal out, Joba/Hughes will grow with the natural progression all starters experience, etc. But Like you said, doing nothing this team is probably still the best in the game.

that’s true, and we also had a lot of late-inning heroics, not necessarily something you can count on repeating itself. I think i was referring more to the roster construction at the beginning of the year, which made the yankees look like a surefire 100+ win team, probably more. Going into next year, I just think that our team is, objectively, not quite as strong as it was going into this year, and I don’t see any major moves that wouldn’t be as potentially detrimental as helpful. That’s not to say we’ve got as good a shot as anyone to win in 2010, just that if we get hit by the inevitable slew of injuries that hit us this year (and everyone else, like every year), we aren’t going to win 103 games again. I could still see 95/96, which will easily get us into the playoffs, and probably win us the division, too. Thus, I think that we SHOULD stand relatively pat, other than the usual under-the-radar moves.

Considering how the Colts kicked the Texans’ behind, this is still a close game.

  9. DreDog says:

How about a post comparing Torre & Girardi in the postseason. Was I the only one watching the postseason thinking that Torre would have done this and screwed it up?

    • ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

Getting to see the work of some other managers during the playoffs, I’m really glad we have Giradi. I don’t agree with every decision he made, but he was way better than some others.

      • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

Torre was not always brilliant like some remember. One of the worst managerial moves of all time occurred in that terrific 1-0 pitcher’s duel between Smoltz and Pettite. Man on third I believe, 2 outs, top of the ninth, Yanks up 1-0, and Torre sends Pettite back out there! Naturally Pettite doesn’t get a hit, then gives up a double to the next batter and a grounder to second base to put a man on third for Atlanta and 1 out. Torre was bailed out by Wetteland, but if he wasn’t that move could’ve gone down as one of the worst managerial moves in World Series history. Just an awful, awful, inexplicable move.

        • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

Come to think of it, Torre was bailed out by dumb luck. Wetteland gave up a sharp grounder right at the third baseman and a line drive caught by Paulie right at the fence. Baseball, and baseball history, is a game of inches sometimes.

  10. Voice of Reason says:

I’ve been spending the last hour figuring out the Yankees projected 25 man roster for 2010 and 2011. I am sad to the tenth power.

This second, I’m wondering why Matsui says he can play the field and everyone else thinks he’s nuts.
