World Series Game Four: Yankees @ Phillies

By

After last night’s convincing Game Three win that featured gutty pitching by Andy Pettitte, offensive breakouts from Alex Rodriguez and Nick Swisher (among others), and rock solid bullpen work, the Yanks turn to their undisputed ace tonight as they try to put a stranglehold on the Fall Classic. CC Sabathia gets the ball on three day’s rest for the second time this postseason, and as you know he was stellar against the Halos on short rest. He’ll be opposed not by former teammate Cliff Lee, but by fourth starter Joe Blanton.

Blanton, Swisher’s former roommate in Oakland (Chad Gaudin‘s too), started Game Four of the World Series last year, holding the Rays to just two solo homers (one by current Yank Eric Hinske) over six innings in a win. He even chipped in a solo jack of his own. Of course the Phillies were able to pile on five runs in four innings against Andy Sonnanstine, something that shouldn’t happen to tonight’s Yankee starter.

Unlike yesterday, the weather in The City of Brother Love and Cheese Steaks and Rocky should be dry, so this one should start on time. Here’s the lineups:

Yankees
Derek Jeter, SS
Johnny Damon, LF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Jorge Posada, C
Robinson Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, RF
Melky Cabrera, CF
CC Sabathia, SP (19-8, 3.37)

Philadelphia
Jimmy Rollins, SS
Shane Victorino, CF
Chase Utley, 2B
Ryan Howard, 1B
Jayson Werth, RF
Raul Ibanez, LF
Pedro Feliz, 3B
Carlos Ruiz, C
Joe Blanton, SP (12-8, 4.05)

Oh, in case you missed it, this was the cover the Philly Daily News on Friday (morning after Game Two). And they say Yankee fans have a sense of entitlement.

I’m living in Philly and you can’t even compare the philly papers to the new york ones. They’re a joke.

    • BklynJT says:

Did you get any of today’s papers? Im wondering if they are using that hr call as a scapegoat for their lost yesterday

  2. Evil Empire says:

In the playoffs, let alone the World Series, CC should be just as good on 3 days rest as he is on normal rest, especially since he was not overworked down the stretch and just had 7 days off before game 1 of the World Series.

On paper, this is one of the most favorable matchups we’ve had all post season. Every game is important, but this one could all but guarantee a championship. I’m hyped.

  3. Mike Pop says:

    43 minutes…

  4. DGeezy says:

Most likely to get a hit tonight: Cano, Melky or CC?

  5. BklynJT says:

Any headlines in the philly papers on the backlash from the “blown hr call” yesterday’s game. Heard the e-tards at ESPN were going crazy over that call.

    • BklynJT says:

Is there any truth to the ruling that any ball that hits a camera in the outfield is a hr.

      • larryf says:

I heard that was the ground rule. Amazing how A-rod loves the camera!!!

      • Joe D. says:

Yes, it was determined before the game those were the ground rules.

Hence, if that shot had come off the bat of Chase Utley, John Kruk would be praising the Umps for getting the call right-on.

Nothin’ like ESPN-style objectivity. They should team with FOXNews more often.

        • BklynJT says:

I would give those guys some minor respect if they come out today and admit they were wrong during the broadcast. I still hate them though, but at least they would be willing to inform the viewing public that there was no “bias sway” towards the yankees, since obviously a lot of fans are ignorant and only know what they are told by these broadcasters.

      * Doomed Yanks Delay Inevitable”

      * Umpbrenners Take Game Three”

      * Steroid Users Edge by Squeaky-Clean Phils”

      * NostraRollins: “Phils in Six”

      * Philly Parade Pushed Back to Thursday

    • I was expecting “Phillies play nice. Allow series to go 6.” or “Title #2 will have to be on the Road.”

  6. So my friend is a Phillies fan and he IMed me today to say that it was over (as in, the Phillies are not going to win).

Man, those guys have such complexes, don’t they?

  7. Salty Buggah says:

McNabb is just saying it because he has to. I hope he ends up disappointed.

  8. Quikksand says:

    Beat the Frillies!

  9. Rey22 says:

I live here in Philly. With the way everyone talks about the series, you’d assume they’re up 3-0, and Cliff Lee is taking on Brian Bruney (our 4th starter111) in tonight’s game.

  10. John Duci says:

I hope the Yankees lose tonight so maybe this series gets to game 7. If CC wins tonight its over. A game 7 in the new Yankee Stadium would be an amazing setting and there would be nothing that stops me from going.

    • Mike Pop says:

      Sorry man.

      I don’t want there to be a game 7.

Get the W tonight, get the W tomorrow with A.J. winning the WS MVP. and then it’s on to celebration. BONG

    • donttradecano says:

um no. As thrilling as it would be, end it as early as possible.

      • John Duci says:

Damn you guys are boring. You would rather watch the Yanks win in Philly on T.V. then to be in the most amazing baseball atmosphere possible. Not me.

        • Mike Axisa says:

I have no problem winning on the road. Finish the series off ASAP.

It’s not like I could go to Games 6 or 7 anyway.

          • Hey Philly, We Ain't the Rays says:

C’mon Mike! I got into 2 in the Grandstand and it only set me back $600 per! Cheap at twice the price! (Of course, the free Jay-Z concert provided value you wouldn’t find in a measly 6 or 7.)

          • The Artist says:

            +1

I could easily draw up a very plausible scenario where we lose this thing in 6 or 7 games. Wrap it up, do not give away World Series games if at all possible.

        • Tom Zig says:

I value my mental well being, thank youuuuu

          • John Duci says:

Imagine 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th Yanks down by 3. bases loaded for arod. 3-2 count. then one swing of the bat sets off i dont even know what to call it or how to explain it. and you are there!! holy shit thats my version of heaven

    • BklynJT says:

wth… you can’t be serious? just so you can get a chance to go to the game, you are willing to risk the yankees losing??

    • Salty Buggah says:

No. I hope they win at least tonight.

  11. larryf says:

Raul Ibanez-looks like Gandhi but his swing reminds me of Tino’s. Strange….:-)

  12. The Artist says:

    -CC wins tonight
    -Lee wins tomorrow
-Yanks wrap it up in 6 at the stadium on Wed with Andy vs Pedro.

Worst case scenario, you have CC vs Hamels for Game 7.

    • bobtaco says:

I think that may be the likely scenario

    • Hey Philly, We Ain't the Rays says:

If the AJ we saw in Game 2 shows up, that second bullet point is less than a foregone conclusion, and becomes a mere likelihood.

    • Sweet Dick Willie says:

      -CC wins tonight check
      -Lee AJ wins tomorrow
-Yanks wrap it up in 6 5 at the stadium on Wed with Andy vs Pedro. CBP Monday

Worst case scenario, you have CC vs Hamels for Game 7 the parade on Wednesday.

      That’s better.

  13. Voice Of Reason says:

Can’t wait to see what the headline is when the Yankees win the series. “Phillies lose due to Swine Flu Epidemic”… or maybe… “Phillies dominate Yankees during game one, drop series 4-1″… or possibly… “Phillies donate title to Yankees to honor America”…. the list goes on and on.

  14. Salty Buggah says:

PeteAbe takes yet another shot at A-Rod:

“A-Rod, incensed at Jeter winning Clenente and Aaron awards, has vowed to win the Triple Crown next spring”

It’s a horrible shot but a shot nonetheless.

  15. Hugh Jassman says:

Lets just hope CC throws better than Eli today.

  16. Joe D. says:

    Prediction Time:

    Sabathia 6-2/3 IP, 2 ER, 4 H, 3 BB, 8 K. 108 Pitches. Win.

    Blanton 5-1/3 IP, 6 R (5 ER), 9 H, 2 BB, 3 K. 85 Pitches. Loss.

    Final Score: 7-4, Yanks.

    • Hey Philly, We Ain't the Rays says:

Conservative. I say Sabathia does better than that, and Blanton does not get out of the 3rd inning.

      • Hey Philly, We Ain't the Rays says:

Unless Blanton has magic’d up a knuckleball since the last time he saw us.

  17. rockdog says:

Anyone else see the Wojciechowski article on ESPN …. geez. Some piss poor writing and analysis. I have to say, the comments on RAB are generally more interesting and more thoughtful than anything in the mainstream press. Props to Mike, Joe and Ben — you guys really do a great job.

  18. Salty Buggah says:

    oook, that was kinda weird.

  19. Riddering says:

I know I’m opening myself up to scorn here but I LOVED the show Avatar: the Last Airbender.

That movie looks as similar to the show as I am to Laura Posada. So sad.

  20. Z says:

    In 51 2008 ABs CC hit: 2 2B, 2 HR ~ SLG. > .400
    In 138 2009 ABs Molina hit: 4 2B, 1 HR ~ SLG. < .270

Verdict: CC will do something with the bat tonight. (I hope he gets more than 3 ABs.)

  21. Brazilian Yankee says:

I’m excited to watch CC hit.

  22. swisher's fauxhawk says:

Anyone figure out the words that come out of Ozzie’s mouth?

  23. baka nakamura says:

ok let’s help hamels with his mental health and win tonight. he’s waiting for the 09 season to end as quickly as possible. too much stress.

  24. Salty Buggah says:

Gangstas!!! We have the coolest handshakes.

  25. JMK aka The Overshare says:

Any chance we can get T Pain to do the National Anthem in auto-tune next year? That would be awesome.

  26. swisher's fauxhawk says:

A show already in decline gets a spinoff…

Ladies and gentlemen: The Cleveland Show!

  27. Riddering says:

You know, if the tradeoff for no towel waving means Yankee Stadium is quieter I am okay with this.

  28. Hey Philly, We Ain't the Rays says:

We should have Thunderstix. Those things are AWESOME.

  29. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

McCarver–Jackass, every starter when you played pitched on 3 days rest.

  30. slappy white says:

boy McCarver got in his Bob Gibson reference early tonight

  31. David A says:

Wait the Philles were in trouble of a playoff spot? Color me surprised.

  32. Hey Philly, We Ain't the Rays says:

Exactly. Come to think of it, why the hell don’t we have a mascot (No, Hank doesn’t count.)?? Not cool to not have a mascot.

  33. Stadium Garlic Fries says:

McCarver, Torre and Francesa have a deal that at least 10 times a day you have to mention Bob Gibson if you talk about Baseball.

  34. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

The some series airbrushing of wrinkles.

  35. ShuutoHeat says:

Com’on lets do this shiet!!!!! Remember this folks, I called for a CC HR!

  36. JobaWockeeZ says:

Late to the party but Ozzie Guillen is an idiot. Phillies in 6?

  37. Yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

    Lets go Yankeessssssssssss

  38. Souter Fell says:

    Here we go

  39. MikeD says:

    Way to start…

  40. Accent Shallow says:

    Hahaha, Utley.

  41. JMK aka The Overshare says:

    Slip slidin’.

  42. JobaWockeeZ says:

    That was some fine range.

  43. Souter Fell says:

    First one of many

  44. JGS says:

    Utley with the UZR–good start

  45. baka nakamura says:

    love it. nice start.

  46. Brazilian Yankee says:

Thank Mo for that slip. Great start.

  47. Riddering says:

That is what I like to see.

  48. Sleepy Carl says:

Joe Morgan just said on the radio that the Phillies caught a break facing the only Yankee starting pitcher who has lost this postseason (CC). His reasoning; CC is the only starter to lose, CC is the weak link, Phillies will win.

    • Sweet Dick Willie says:

Because “wins” is the most important stat for a starting pitcher, according to JM.

  49. Stadium Garlic Fries says:

Captain ready to play…a jeterian single

  50. Salty Buggah says:

Fuckin Utley. Why is he so good? Thank Mo he fell. Jeter intangible’d his way on.

  51. Hey Philly, We Ain't the Rays says:

    LMAO @ Utley!!

  52. Accent Shallow says:

Gameday called that as “In play, out(s)”. Way to be on top of it, guys.

  53. Mike Axisa says:

There we go Jetes. A gutty slip by Utley.

  54. swisher's fauxhawk says:

    Fantastic start.

  55. Yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

    yesssssssss good start

  56. ShuutoHeat says:

Game over….do we even need to doubt it?

  57. baka nakamura says:

    hello!

  58. Salty Buggah says:

    Woohoo! DAMON! Great start!

  59. PsiFighter37 says:

    Blowout commencing!

  60. Joe D. says:

    Oh my.

  61. Souter Fell says:

    loving the yankee fans

  62. Stadium Garlic Fries says:

alright, that’s how real AL offense looks like

  63. Brazilian Yankee says:

    Rocket! Great great start.

  64. Mike Axisa says:

It’s okay guys, Cliff Lee will be well rested tomorrow.

  65. JMK aka The Overshare says:

Johnny Damon is no longer dividing by zero. Thank Mo!

  66. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

Wow. That picked up a notch..

  67. Accent Shallow says:

    Looking good so far.

Here’s hoping the big man has his stuff tonight.

  68. Vinny the Bull says:

    Beautiful, beautiful.

  69. Jay says:

    Oh this is beautiful!

  70. Camilo Gerardo - your inception? fuck perception, go with what makes sense says:

love the yankee cheering section. are those bidding paddles the response to teh towels?

  71. JobaWockeeZ says:

Cano’s the only one left to break through from his slump. He’ll be amazing today. Book it.

  72. Yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

    1-0

  73. baka nakamura says:

    off to the races.

  74. Joe D. says:

    I’ll take the early run.

    Good start, Yanks.

  75. Brazilian Yankee says:

I’ll take the run…it was a good play by Howard.

  76. Salty Buggah says:

Decent play by Howard. Ranging but it was a slow grounder.

  77. AJ says:

Hey everyone, look…The Yankees decided they’d love to start with the lead!

  78. MikeD says:

A productive out. An RBI and an advance of the runner to third.

  79. Arman Tamzarian says:

    Good start

  80. baka nakamura says:

    bullshit!

  81. Yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

    thats itttttttttttttt

  82. Stadium Garlic Fries says:

    missed double by inches..

  83. Accent Shallow says:

    Fuckin’ Phillies.

  84. Will says:

    SOMEONE NEEDS TO PAY

  85. Brazilian Yankee says:

They have to do something about this shit! That was intentional

  86. JobaWockeeZ says:

Motherfuckers stop fucking hitting him you fucking stupid intentional asshole douchebags.

  87. Salty Buggah says:

    Pussies!!! Stop hitting Alex!

  88. swisher's fauxhawk says:

    Hitting A-Rod….again

  89. Hey Philly, We Ain't the Rays says:

How many times do they hit him before we do something about it?

  90. Souter Fell says:

are you fucking kidding me? Theyre trying to take the inside away from cc already by drawing warnings

  91. Camilo Gerardo - your inception? fuck perception, go with what makes sense says:

    oh hells no!

  92. Quikksand says:

    a-rod hit again!

  93. Joe D. says:

    Free baserunner?

    Gee, thanks, guys.

Rollins was right: you really are nice.

  94. Mike Axisa says:

Thanks for the free baserunner. You’re a real man, Joe Blanton.

  95. Jay says:

This is bullshit man. That looked intentional to me.

  96. ShuutoHeat says:

WHAO WTF?!?!?! FUCK YOU BLANTON!!!! I’LL GUT YOU, YOU PIECE OF SHIET FUCK!!!!

  97. cjc says:

what a joke you can’t warn the teams off that

  98. Brazilian Yankee says:

Now they warn both benches? What a fucking joke of a umpiring crew.

  99. Will says:

    THATS BULLSHIT

  100. JobaWockeeZ says:

    No shit it’s intentional!
Fucking lucky Phillies. You are so fucking lucky you fucking sore ass pansies.

  101. e mills says:

you can’t warn them here WTF!!!

  102. baka nakamura says:

    that warning is so lame.

  103. Sleepy Carl says:

Both teams being warned is fucked up. If CC accidentally hits someone he’s gone.

  104. Bob C says:

wow way to take the inside pitch away for the rest of the game…

  105. Stadium Garlic Fries says:

this is fuckin bullshit..they wanted warning to take cc’s inside pitch away from him

  106. Ghost of Scott Brosius says:

This is bullshit they did this on purpose to set up CC

  107. Souter Fell says:

scumbag phils. If you cant see any intention tim your a fucking idiot

  108. Yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

this is bullshit now we can hit them.

  109. The Artist says:

What do you say Brian Bruney starts the game and throws just ONE pitch?

  110. Riddering says:

Warning both benches after 3 HBPs on Yanks and none on Phillies = ARGH.

  111. pete says:

    wow. just wow.

  112. Salty Buggah says:

    Cmon Jorge. No DP!

  113. Joe D. says:

    Make them pay, Jorge.

  114. Jose says:

The Yankees are such punks. That was for Swisher admiring the homerun he hit the other day. The Phillies play the game the right way.

  115. Ghost of Scott Brosius says:

mccarver doesn’t see the strategic value of hitting arod there?

    • JackHammer says:

      Exactly. let’s see.

you hit their best hitter plus create the double play with a guy on third and one out. If they intentionally walked a-rod in that spot, Mccarver would have called it a good move.

in addition, one team should not be punished for the other teams misdeed. i understand why they warn both teams, but i would change the rule.

  116. JobaWockeeZ says:

Oh take notes again Youk. This is how you be classy.

  117. PsiFighter37 says:

There we go, we’ll take it.

    Suck on it, Phillies.

  118. JobaWockeeZ says:

Good job Jorge. Make them pay.

  119. JackC says:

am I crazy or should Blanton not be allowed to have a cap whose bill is so clearly marked with a potential foreign substance?

    • jmas12 says:

Totally agree. Cliff Lee had the same thing going on in game 1. I think it’s pretty hysterical that nobody else is making a point of it. Whatever, Blanton still sucks so I’m not too worried about it.

  120. Brazilian Yankee says:

I can definately see those fucking umpires tossing a Yankee pitcher tonight.

    Anyways, 2-0 nothing!

    • Brazilian Yankee says:

      That should have been 2-nothing!

Cano needs to get his shit together. At least hit something hard.

  121. Riddering says:

What, the Phils aren’t going to say Damon left early?

  122. JSquared says:

Well, Phillies must know they won’t be back to World Series for a long time, might as well hit A-Rod.

  123. What say we get a nice big lead and unleash pocket-rocket Chad Gaudin on the Phillies late in the game? I think Carlos Ruiz could use a pitch right between the numbers.

Kidding. But this is bullshit, they’re clearly throwing at A-Rod. I hate that the Yanks get a warning for that. Do the umps have to warn both teams? Is it in their discretion to warn one team but not the other? The Yanks shouldn’t get a warning in that situation.

  124. pete says:

    c’mon robbie. let’s make it a quick 3-0

  125. Salty Buggah says:

Damnit Robbie. Stop being jammed every fuckin time!. It would have awesome if A-Rod scored to make em pay. But oh well.

  126. Tom Zig says:

    Ugh come on Cano.

  127. 5th Starter says:

So what did Girardi say to the umps? I agree that he should complain, but what could he possibly say to the umps about the warning? They’ve been doing that for years.

  128. swisher's fauxhawk says:

Whatever, we can tag Blanton later on.

    Get it done, CC.

  129. AJ says:

I wonder why Robbie can’t get around on those inside pitches. I feel like he was doing it consistently during the regular season.

It’s going to be very interesting to see CC pitch now. The umps have partly taken away the inside from him, and I feel now he has to put the ball over the plate more. I don’t think the warning was warranted – give the other team the opportunity to respond.

  130. DreDog says:

Is that right? 11 pitches for Blanton that inning?

  131. slappy white says:

the old guy in the sandals is a day late goin out to talk to Cole

  132. Souter Fell says:

C’mon Cole. Break out the curveball. Swish can’t hit nothing.

    /Last night’d

  133. SJ says:

LOL hard at McCarver saying there was no way that pitch to A-Rod was intentional.

    What a joke.

  134. ShuutoHeat says:

Think the Phillies will resort to having some of their left handed bats hang right over the plate hoping to get hit?

  135. Salty Buggah says:

That HBP not only allowed them to avoid A-Rod and set up the DP, it took somewhat of an advantage away from CC. But that aint gonna matter.

  136. dalelama says:

Cano looks like he doesn’t give a crap……

  137. Joker, The says:

The Phillies are a bigger bunch of scumbags than the Red Sux. I never thought I’d see the day. They make me sick.

  138. Stadium Garlic Fries says:

Welcome to 2009 worldseries played by NY Yankees of AL vs Philadelphia Phillies of “Bush League”

  139. Salty Buggah says:

Then again, now the Philles have to careful busting Alex inside.

  140. swisher's fauxhawk says:

Atta boy Rollins, that’s how you show up to a series.

  141. HolyGhostClaw says:

Woah Swish hits a HR and a double and now he’s calling off the CF?

    WTF Swish!!

  142. Joe D. says:

“I don’t always eat red meat…but when I do, I prefer the Phillies lineup. Stay hungry, my friends.”

    – CC Sabathia, before game 4

  143. Jay says:

Great. References to game 1 allow Buck to say “CLIFF LEE!” a zillion times.

  144. JMK aka The Overshare says:

    Damon with the UZR!

  145. Yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

    almost got there.

  146. Salty Buggah says:

    Damn bloopers!

    Cmon CC.

  147. Brazilian Yankee says:

Teams that face the Yankees really get a bunch of cheap hits.

Also Melky has to run harder towards that one. He was jogging…

  148. PsiFighter37 says:

    Gah, what a cheap hit.

  149. Brazilian Yankee says:

WHere did that 1-0 pitch miss?

  150. Evil Empire says:

Dinky little Hawaiian hit. Phillies keep popping up balls like that we’ll be juuuuuuuuust fine.

  151. southernyankeefan says:

    i do not like Utley.

  152. JMK aka The Overshare says:

    Again to Utley. Damn!

  153. Yankeefan91 Arod fan says:

    a dammit

  154. Salty Buggah says:

Damnit. Cmon CC. Bear down here.

  155. bobtaco says:

    Time to start IBB Utley?

  156. Brazilian Yankee says:

CC should walk Utley from now on. He can’t retire him.

  157. PsiFighter37 says:

CC keeps missing his spots against Utley…

  158. pete says:

    oh bawls.

  159. JobaWockeeZ says:

    I’m starting to hate Utley.

  160. Joker, The says:

    oh fuck me

  161. swisher's fauxhawk says:

Right down the plate again for Utley…

    Come on CC.

  162. Evil Empire says:

THAT was neither dinky nor Hawaiian. I’m glad that didn’t go out of the park. But no worries, CC settles down now and we go on to destroy Blanton.

  163. Brent says:

    Damn…

    Hope this doesn’t continue.

  164. AJ says:

Looks like the offense is going to need to keep swinging tonight and putting up runs.

  165. southernyankeefan says:

What is CCs deal with throwing utley those BS fastballs?

  166. JMK aka The Overshare says:

It was right down the middle AGAIN!

  167. Accent Shallow says:

    Frickin’ Utley.

  168. Mike Axisa says:

Eh, as long as they keep guys off base in front of Utley, they’ll be fine.

  169. Dela G says:

    oh shit

cmon cc you can’t give the lead back

  170. Salty Buggah says:

Damn, CC missed again. Right down the middle again.

  171. HolyGhostClaw says:

Why is CC still pitching fastballs to Utley?

  172. Tom Zig says:

Calm down and settle in, CC

  173. PsiFighter37 says:

On another note, too bad we can’t hit Utley now. Stupid umps.

  174. cjc says:

boy this mmight be a 10-9 game

  175. Riddering says:

Damn, I’m just glad that ball wasn’t gone.

  176. Dela G says:

one batter i cannot wait to never see again is chase utley

he has singlehandedly done all the damage against CC

  177. ShuutoHeat says:

You can feel the happiness oozing out of Buck and McCarver’s ass mouth after that Utley double.

  178. Rey22 says:

Man…Utley is the fuckin’ man against CC…

  179. David A says:

Where the hell are these pitches missing?

  180. Accent Shallow says:

Looks like the ump has a tight zone tonight.

  181. southernyankeefan says:

And that should have been strike 3.

  182. PsiFighter37 says:

Oh, and this strike zone is ridiculously freakin’ small.

  183. Jay says:

Good grief what a shitty zone!

  184. Ghost of Scott Brosius says:

    This zone is retarded

  185. Brazilian Yankee says:

3 pitches at the same place, first one is called a strike and the next 2 are called balls.

  186. pete says:

strikes should always be called strikes. always.

  187. aa says:

    man cc is struggling.

  188. Will says:

fucking ump, pitches 2 and 3 were strikes

  189. MikeD says:

His location, so far, is off, and velocity slightly down. Let’s hope a warms into it.

  190. cjc says:

not what you want after the top half

  191. AJ says:

I love the way CC is getting squeezed on the inside corner during this at bat. That was a strike all last night, and FOXTRAX shows that pitch is in the zone.

  192. Brazilian Yankee says:

Got away with a slider up…

  193. JackHammer says:

for what it’s worth mlb.com had those first three pitches as strikes.

  194. swisher's fauxhawk says:

This ump reminds me of Helen Keller.

  195. PsiFighter37 says:

Last observation: I hate any fans that wave or bang together anything.

  196. Ghost of Scott Brosius says:

It’s just irresponsible to have such a small zone in this park. You’re asking for a blood bath

  197. Accent Shallow says:

Will Howard miss a second slider in the same place?

  198. ShuutoHeat says:

Here we go with the crappy zone again, what is worst is the fact that the Phillies fans all credit their AMAZING players. Go and thank the ump you ingrates.

  199. Esteban says:

This umpire’s strike zone has been awful

  200. JobaWockeeZ says:

I’ll take Pujols and A-Rod before Howard.

  201. MikeD says:

He should not be throwing Howard fastballs here. He is lousy at hitting anything with a bend from a lefty.

  202. Riddering says:

    Ryan Howard for MVP!

  203. PsiFighter37 says:

Hahaha, suck it Ryan. You suck. TERRIBLY.

  204. JobaWockeeZ says:

Fact: Phillies fans are comprised of more douches than Red Sox fans.

  205. bobtaco says:

Even with the extra strikes, Howard still can’t buy a hit

  206. ShuutoHeat says:

Sit yo fucking ass down you fucking free swinging dick.

  207. Stadium Garlic Fries says:

cc sucks? what will u call Howard then?

  208. Salty Buggah says:

    CC sucks chant? WOW

Y’all gonna fire up the beast

  209. Joe D. says:

I’m not typically one who complains about ball/strike calls, but that sequence…

    Ahem.

The word “bullshit” come to mind.

  210. Evil Empire says:

We own Ryan Howard. I love it!

  211. Jay says:

I love it. Whenever the Phillies start a chant, they get their asses handed to them. “CC Sucks” and then Howard strikes out.

    Again.

  212. baka nakamura says:

    love howard this series.

  213. Brazilian Yankee says:

Really, 2 outs into the game and Joe Girardi is already out there? Sit yo ass down Joe.

  214. Jose says:

Howard’s 10th strikeout of the series.

  215. Hall and Nokes says:

I’m not worried about the 10-9 scenario unless Utley comes up to bat 9 times.

I am a little worried about the scenario where CC gets tossed for one that gets away from him.

  216. Esteban says:

Ryan Howard’s arch-nemesis is a offspeed pitch from a lefty

  217. HolyGhostClaw says:

What were those fan things the yankees fans were holding after the Howard K? Lame.

  218. JackHammer says:

howard is a great hitter, but when you have a .650 ops against lefties you can’t be considered one of the best in the game.

  219. Mike Axisa says:

    http://tinyurl.com/y87ruyq

Somehow three of those pitches were called balls.

  220. Brazilian Yankee says:

    Werth scares me.

  221. bobtaco says:

I would have been tempted to just walk Werth. Seems like they are being ultra careful with him anyway.

  222. AJ says:

Wow. CC is just off tonight.

  223. Salty Buggah says:

Cmon CC. One more out man!

  224. Accent Shallow says:

Intentionally walking Werth is silly. Just throw a change outside, maybe he makes the third out. And if you miss, he’s on anyway.

  225. Dela G says:

good call walking werth i believe

  226. Evil Empire says:

CC gets out of this inning with no further damage and he should settle down fine. Blanton, on the otherhand, is just straight fucked.

  227. Joe D. says:

He once gave Yankee fans a minor scare…
…so they could see how it feels.

    He is…
    Carsten Charles Sabathia.

    Stay optimistic, my friends.

(Okay, okay, I’ll stop with the Dos Equis stuff…but it’s so fun!)

  228. JMK aka The Overshare says:

Alright, wasn’t great, but it’ll work.

  229. Riddering says:

Nice job, CC! Let’s keep it moving.

  230. TJ says:

    I love CC

  231. bobtaco says:

Beautiful pitch. The only nick was the Utley hit.

  232. Accent Shallow says:

So, CC is really good. I just wish he could retire Utley.

  233. JobaWockeeZ says:

Alright CC, you got your excitement so you can’t yawn anymore. Shut them down like before.

  234. PsiFighter37 says:

There we go. Outside of Utley v. Sabathia we own their lefties.

  235. Dela G says:

    great job ZZ

    the beast has been awakened

  236. Brian says:

Rocky first inning by CC…hopefully he cruises through the next few with the offense continuing to slug it out. Lets Go Yankees!

  237. Salty Buggah says:

CC!!! Nice job man. Settle down and roll from here.

    You got this.

  238. Ghost of Scott Brosius says:

CC says this Utley guy is good. the rest of y’all-yawn
