Angels interested in Matsui (UPDATE: ChiSox too)
ByUpdate (3:48pm): The White Sox also have “have emerged as a serious contender” for Matsui, according to Mark Feinsand. Kenny Williams apparently has an infinite amount of money at his disposal, because he’s added about $120M worth of obligations within the last six months (Jake Peavy, Alex Rios, today’s Mark Teahen extension).
10:46am: Via Mike DiGiovanna, the Angels have internally discussed a pursuit of Hideki Matsui. “He’s a person we’ve talked about,” Angels’ GM Tony Reagins said. “But we have a lot of scenarios we can attack, whether through trade or free agency.” It’s likely that Matsui is just a fallback option given his inability to the play the field, because The Greatest Manager Who Ever Lived likes to rotate four players between the DH and the outfield regularly.
Meanwhile, Ken Davidoff reports that Godzilla began a two-week mini-camp yesterday, and is working out in the outfield. Obviously, he’s trying to boost his free agent stock.

Matsui can’t steal bases though.
Scoscia will teach him, he’s the greatest fundamental/small ball manager ever. Matsui will steal 32 bases this year and lead the league in sac. bunts.
Reporter: So Mike, the Angels brought in Matsui to upgrade the power a bit and to hit some home runs?
Mike S: Home runs? Who needs ‘em.
“He’s a person we’ve talked about”
As in his name came up in a list of potential DH options.
Tony Reagins: Hey Mike, if Hideki Matsui doesn’t resign with the Yankees, would you be interested in having him here at the right price?
Mike ScosciaFace: Yeah, sure.
Tony Reagins: Hey Mike, if I had a grilled cheese and bologna sandwich in my briefcase, and I wasn’t going to eat it and was willing to give it to you, would you be interested in eating it?
Mike ScosciaFace: Yeah, sure.
… aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand, SCENE!
If you met two guys named Flippy and Hambone, who would you say liked dolphins the most? I’d say Flippy, wouldn’t you? You’d be wrong though, it’s Hambone.
You’re so wise, Rose. Like a miniature Buddha, covered in hair.
Love it.

Angels GM Tony Reagins admitted to interest in Hideki Matsui, reports Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times. Keep in mind, though that the Japanese press is apparently grilling every GM on Matsui.
US Press: Hey! Congratulations on signing Matt Holliday!
Random GM: Thank you, we got the man we wanted.
Japanese Press: Matsui?? They signed Matsui!!
Random GM: [confused] What??

makes sense for the Angels. They could use the power bat.
he would be a good fit for the chi-sox. dont forget they also lost the salaries of thome and dye.
its just weird…you haven’t heard anything about Matsui and the yankees even talking.
it seems the writing is on the wall.

Can you pay my bills? Can you pay my telephone bills? Can you pay my automo… biles? If you do, then maybe we can chill…
I-don’t-think-you-do…So you-and-I-are-through.
I sang that song for a talent show as a kid at camp (maybe 9? 10?). It’s weird that people thought I was gay.
Anyway, some Korean breakdancer kid won. Was bad day.
“You’re triflin, good for nothing type of brother
Oh silly me, why haven’t I found another
A baller, when times get hard, he’s the one who will help me out
Instead of, a scrub like you, who don’t know what a man’s about”
Yeah, I totally don’t get why someone would think some 9 year old boy singing that at camp would be gay…
(raises eyebrows, backs away slowly)
It was a Christian Camp in Warwick. I looked back on the date. I was 12. A little off. I was going to sing a Boyz II Men song on the piano, but found out two minutes beforehand that the piano was broken; I had to improvise. My sister used to sing that Destiny’s Child song, it was catchy, I knew the words, and really didn’t care what a bunch of religious pre-nager zealots thought.
That was the year Mother found Jesus. I was kicked out for punching some kid after he cheated in Four Square.
reading feinsand’s post if the white sox are only offering or at least budgeting 5-6 mil then that would be easy for the yanks to beat at 1 yr 8 mil.
Hit-deki wouldnt be a good fit for the Angels. He doesnt play the outfield…how can you play the game the right way if you dont take the field?
What are people thoughts on DH for the Yanks this year if they don’t resign Matsui?

I think Matsui will return he has proven that although he can’t play the field he can still produce with the bat.Matsui in the clutch is what won the WS lets not forget that.Damon he’s good but as far as swinging the bat I would bet on matsui.Damon’s wheels aren’t much better then matsui his throwing arm is trash but he’s still a threat on the bases more because he’s very smart.I think with granderson on the Yankees Damon is gone I also think the Yankees will wait as long as they can to sign Matsui for the cheapest price probably at 1 yr.
If not Matsui, then I’d say Damon.
I think/hope Cashman signs 2 out of Damon, Matsui, and Cameron.
Agreed. And, I hope the two of the three is:
A) Cameron
and
B) One of Damon/Matsui
I don’t want the two to be Damon AND Matsui with no Cameron. Now that Granderson is here, I want to have Cammy as the everyday LF and have Damon or HazMat as the everyday DH.
Superb defense, better balance.
Damon as the DH…preferably.
Bringing Cameron on board now could add another 150 Ks to the lineup.
Gardbrera should offer pretty good D as a LF. Maybe Melky will even improve slightly at the plate. The defense gets upgraded overall.
Matsui/ Delgad-it/ Thome could slide in as DH.
Cameron, even if he strikes out 150 times by himself, will create far fewer outs than the slap-hitting Brett Gardner.
Brett Gardner would struggle in fast-pitch softball.
+1 to Cameron. Superb defense and just as good (and maybe better if Grandy rebounds to 2007 somehow) offense as this year for our outfield.
Jose Canseco

Obama’s favorite team: The White Sox.
It’s so obvious: Chicago’s getting a few billion under the table from the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act stimulus slushfund. Connect the dots. We’re through the looking glass.
WAKE UP SHEEPLE
You know how he gets that money to pay the White Sox?
By killing our grandparents, so he doesn’t have to give them Social Security.
Bonus: Killing our grandparents and turning them into Soylent Green could end world hunger like THAT.
3 birds, 1 stone.
1.) No more famine
2.) Plenty of jobs created in new Grandparent-killing/processing facilities
3.) Fewer old people constantly slowing down store checkout lines buying their dress socks and crossword puzzle books
Win-win-win.
I’m running for President on a “Kill Grandma and turn her into food” platform.
You forgot the jobs lost for the dress socks and crossword puzzle books industries.
We’ll need someone to staff the new worldwide Soylent-wafer distribution logistics centers.
I THOUGHT OF EVERYTHING
Darn, I was too slow, but I will still put this here since I went through all the trouble of finding it and copying it:
“Soylent Green is people! “
can you turn them into biofuel?
other benefits:
decreases in medicaid/medicare payment
decreases in long term care burdens
more accuracy in actuarial science (hey look grandma, you’re 80, so, um, you’re outta here…)
decreases in florida property taxes/costs
decreases in auto insurance (especially motorcyclists…)
Re #2
Job creation and job openings. Death of the grandparent generation means they won’t be holding onto to their jobs due to the whole “waah waah my retirement savings are gone!” spiel.
Riddering, you’re my new Undersecretary of Labor.
I’m not even going to ask what the upside of being an Undersecretary is.
Job creation.

Well, it’s better than polio.
And you say I’m the tease.
Have you been reading Christopher Buckley lately?
Well played.
Say NO to National Health Care!!
Yeah! Keep the government’s hands off my Medicare!
I foolishly took a higher salary at the cost of company healthcare, and now pay for that shit myself. Crappy coverage, no prescriptions, tons of money. Not worth the $2k higher in pay!
you thought 2k was going to cover it?
I’d like to thank the good Mo for making Cashman, and not Kenny Williams, a Yankee.
Thanks for Swishahouse, Kenny. We appreciate it a lot. We hope you enjoyed Betemit.
Yeah, Betemit can’t even jump boxes. Loser.
I think if they bring Damon back to DH I don’t see a big problem with letting Godzilla walk.
Matsui is a better hitter at this point. If you’re bring only one back to fill the DH role…Matsui makes the most sense. He’s better and cheaper.
Besides, the rumblings are that Damon is still looking for a 4 year deal…and is ALSO refusing at this point to take a pay cut ($13M)
My preference:
Cameron and Matsui for LF and DH, both on one-year deals. Damon walks.
+1. Not as much flexibility as with Damon (but we don’t really need that) but better overall value.
I’m in. Would you play Granderson in CF/Cameron in LF or the other way ’round? Cameron is still a darn good CFer, no? I guess you can’t really go wrong either way. Two good CFers + an average RFer = damn good OF defense.
Would you play Granderson in CF/Cameron in LF or the other way ’round?
Meh. Flip a coin.
Give CF to Granderson, he’s younger.
i would put cameron in cf, granderson in lf, but either could work.
I’m so on board with this. Then sign Pettitte, Sheets and maybe one reliever (or trade Melky for one), call it a day.
Definitely. With the way Cashman is working on the OF, the edge Damon had by being able to man LF is slowly dwindling. Matsui’s got DH experience, as much as he wants to joke around about being in the OF this winter, and he’s a man. He’s got a man’s 40 year old knees!
Matsui is a better hitter at this point.
Not as conclusive as you think. Damon’s baserunning puts him slightly ahead of Matsui as an overall offensive contributor.
True, but Matsui is so consistent. If healthy, you know he’s going to give you an OPS+ right around 130. Damon is harder to predict.
Two things I didn’t know that surprised me.
1. Damon has a lifetime OPS+ of 105
2. Damon had his highest OPS+ of 126 last year.
JUST SAYING: My uncle asked me last month where i thought Matsui was going and I said the White Sox.
dont pat yourself on the back just yet
yeah Kenny williams is an idiot. that’s why
Cameron over Damon now. Cameron’s great against left handed pitching, Granderson not so much. Versus a tough lefty can play Cameron, Melky, Swish verus tough righty Granderson, Melky, Swish and on most days Melky, Cameron, Granderson with Swish DHing.
If Matsui is working out in the outfield then what is the over/under on him getting his knees drained???
Will people please make the correct statement when referring to something. You can say “the best I have seen”.A person can not say “the best ever” unless they have seen it all. Statements like “The Greatest Manager Who Ever Lived likes to rotate four players between the DH and the outfield regularly.’ and “Scoscia will teach him, he’s the greatest fundamental/small ball manager ever “is plain stupid. I for one have seen better managers.
It would be great to be able to have Matsui play outfiel though, wouldn’t it for the Yankees? He’s a great batter in the line-up and then if we got Matsui to do it then we wouldn’t have to sign Damon. Personally, I don’t want Damon back. He played well, but he’s weak defensively and only go those home-runs because of that short right field wall.
