Why it's not a good idea to bet on the Yankees
Left field closing arguments: Marlon Byrd

A reader sent this in over the weekend. It’s a free movie about the National High School Championship in Japan, which couldn’t come at a better time given tonight’s lack of entertainment. The Rangers, Devils, Knicks, and Nets are in action (the latter against each other), so check that out after watching the above flick. Enjoy the open thread.

Time Warner is going to try and drop Fox? What the shit?

    • http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bring-Melvin-To-America/193013541601?ref=nf Andy in Sunny Daytona

Wrong. Fox is trying to get more money out of Time Warner, and they are threatening to not allow Time Warner to broadcast Fox stations.

It’s like rooting for either Johnny from the Cobra Kai’s or Agent Smith from the Matrix, in a fight.

      • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ Nostra-Artist

Yeah, Murdoch’s been bitching about plummetting ad revs for years now, along with everyone else in the media biz. So now he’s looking to get the cable companies to chip in.

“I’m Rupert Murdoch – the billionaire tyrant!”

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Joseph Pawlikowski

When an entire industry loses money, Murdoch says fuck you, you lose more money so I can stay the same.

          • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ Nostra-Artist

Well, the alternative is to drown along with everyone else. I don’t blame him for trying to survive, if I were him I’d want to be the last man standing, too. Also, if he gets away with this, other in his industry will surely take notice and may benefit as well.

            • http://www.riveraveblues.com Joseph Pawlikowski

No, the alternative is to pursue alternatives, instead of holding on for dear life to a business model that no longer works.

              • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ Nostra-Artist

Sounds good in theory, but if the alternatives were working then someone would do extremely well pursuing them while everyone else was doing things the old way. Then the old guard would take notice, and everyone would copy/follow with a year or two. But that just hasn’t happened yet. All of this is still evolving and innovating so fast that nobody knows who the winners are yet, or what the format is that they’ll be working on.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I don’t know who’s trying to get money from who, and frankly I don’t care. If I can’t watch 24 in a few weeks, I’m going to crack some skulls.

If TWC wants to charge me $5 more a month, so be it. They’re already charging me $150 a month for cable, internet, and all that shit.

        • Chris

What about the NFL playoffs? Or the Sugar, Cotton, Fiesta and Orange Bowls?

As the sponsor for the Sugar bowl, I would have think Allstate is worried about a deal not getting worked out.

          • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

The NFL playoffs are important. I can live without the bowl games.

24 is front and center for me though.

    • http://www.theyankeeuniverse.com/ Nostra-Artist

Pick your huge corporation to take sides with.

I’m not anti-big biz, far from it. But the radio ads FOX has constantly been airing are a joke. “Call TWC and demand your FOX!” Right, and demand them to pass along the price increase on your cable bill while your at it.

I’m stuck with TWC. My Condo doesn’t allow DISH, FIOS or anything else. I could have saved a bundle by doing all my stuff with Verizon, but I can’t. So I have no sympathy for either of them.

Just FYI even if they dont keep FOX, your box and DVR rates are going up.

This upcoming season will be his last in Australia. He should be coming stateside after he graduates.

Something I found from a Sox fan on a Broncos board:

i think now that Boston is out of the Roy Halladay talks with Philly getting him that they need to go after Adrian Gonzalez hard by hard i mean

    San Diego gets
    Johnathan Papelbon
    David Ortiz
    Clay Bucchulz

    Boston Gets
    Adrian Gonzalez
    Chris Young

sounds like a good deal to me and they should go all out for Matt Holliday and make him our new DH if they already have Mike Cameron

This is exactly what he said and he wasn’t being sarcastic. Crazy

    • Jose

Throw in Jack Peavey or no deal.

      • SamVa

so it will be a three way trade?
what do the white sox get?

        • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

A bag of balls and a book about blending traditional scouting and new age sabermetrics written by Theo Epstein.

          Sounds fair to me.

    • Johan Iz My Brohan

I can’t wait until Buchholz goes through 5-6 years of service time and goes through arbitration a few more times. Then I won’t here his name in any more trades hopefully.

Keep talking your shit Yankees fans i say

      Phillies in 4

      • Salty Buggah

        and this gem:

if Boston wants a good set up man / closer they need to get J.J. Putz he was pretty good for seattle a couple of years ago and why the hell the mets signed him after signing K-Roid … ERR i ment K-ROD is beond me

the Sox need to get bobby Crosby and alot of Power to help our line up and there’s been talks of a Sox / Jays trade that would give Boston HALLADAY … DON’T F THIS ONE UP TOO THEO

        • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

            http://forums.denverbroncos.co.....count=3842

I am surprised how idiotic this guy is…even for a Sox fan.

            • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

If you think about it, the Sox would be really good if they got Lackey, Bay, Holliday, AND A-Gon. That’s a powerhouse team right there.

              • Salty Buggah

I find it funny he thought the Hermida acquisition was good because he is younger and “has more potential at this stage of his career.”

He even wants Felix on top of Halladay and Lackey.

                • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster)

Oh yeah forgot to mention Halladay and Felix.

Fuck competition. Just give the Red Sox the trophy.

I thought the end where both teams lost was pretty sad…
None of us could imagine what it would be like to want something so much and work for something so hard and not come close to getting it. At least I couldn’t.
As a senior High School baseball player… that movie really inspired me to work the extra couple of days a week.

UConn’s losing to Cincy right now. I’m none too happy with this. I’m slowly but surely realizing that this year will be rather disappointing for UConn. It won’t be as bad as ’06-’07 when they missed the tournament completely, but definitely not a Final Four worthy team.

According to Mark Newman Jeremy Bleich was regulary touching 94. If so that is very very good.

    • pat

That would be pretty insane. Maybe in bullpen sessions or Instructs. I didn’t think he had that kind of velocity in game situations. Wowsers.

      • Jake H

I was shocked to when I read it. If he can sit in the low 90’s and touch 94 with his secondary pitches which were listed as plus that is huge.

        • pat

I feel like something is off with him though. A smart collegiate pitcher who is supposedly hitting 94 with dynamite secondary stuff, he should have killed A ball instead of putting up a 4.4 fip and a 1.5 whip. I guess as Newman said, his command must have been terrible. 4.71 bb/9 is not too good.

          • http://theyankeeu.com Matt Imbrogno

It seems as if Trenton got the best of him. BB/9 jumped up from 2.5 to 4.7 from Tampa to Trenton, but his K/9 also jumped.

          • Jake H

My guess is that they might have altered his mechanics. They seem to do that with every pitcher that they draft. Also sometimes guys just lose it too for a time. He is young so I’m not worried. Let him pitch in AA and hopefully dominate it.

    • Accent Shallow

That’d be good news, if true. Lefties with gas are always welcome, provided they don’t point at all flyballs, or are capable of finding the plate without using a map.

possible addendum….Whoever does the boxscore may be mistaken, and it could be Miguel Montero, but they haven’t corrected it as of yet.

    • Reggie C.

I guess the team’s coach must’ve been impressed enough with Montero’s batting reps to finally let him play. If Montero wasn’t hurt then I guess he was simply not playing due to the coach’s decision. Anyways, the 1B development is new. I guess Montero’s been taking 1B reps too this off-season. I wonder if that was the coach’s decision too …

Let me begin by saying that I am a Jets fan, but I want to share this quote from Chad Ochocinco regarding his planned touchdown celebrations. If this is for real, PLEASE let it come to pass (without costing the game, of course):

On he has any celebrations planned for Sunday if he is able to score…

“I have one that is going to be so good. Everybody listening? You know the guy in the stands with the fireman hat (Fireman Ed) that quiets the stadium? OK, I have my own fireman hat made, but it doesn’t say Jets. It’s a Bengals fireman hat. When I score, I’m going to sit on top of the goal post and then I’m going to quiet the stadium like he does and I want everybody in the stadium to say, well there not going to say the Bengals, but everybody will get the point of what I’m trying to do. I think it’s good one. If I don’t use the goal post, I’ll get on top of one of my linemen’s shoulders. I’m going out this season with a bang. I don’t care what anybody says. That’s the celebration of all celebrations. I’m going out with a bang.”

Maybe Revis should just let Chad beat him on one play if the game is out of reach.

    • Pasqua

Taken from a transcript on thejetsblog.com, btw.

    • pat

I’m glad u threw in the part about Revis because Chad will be lucky to even touch the ball on Sunday.

You know what it is more likely than though? It’s more likely than the Giants making the playoffs. Yes, 85 having a good game is more likely than the Giants making the playoffs in 2009-2010 after starting out 5-0.
