Quick Hits: Scheduling quirks and Kate Hudson
BySo two quick notes that nearly got lost in the crush earlier today: MLB announced this afternoon that the Yankees and Red Sox will open the 2010 season on Sunday, April 4. The game will start at 8:05 p.m. and air on ESPN2. The average temperate for Boston on April 4 at 8 p.m. is around 42 degrees. What a brilliant move by Major League Baseball.
Finally, capping off a busy day of news came the worst development possible for the Yankees. This has nothing to do with a free agent signing or some big trade. No, this one is all about A-Rod for he and Kate Hudson have reportedly broken up. At this point, the Yanks might as well just forfeit the 2010 season for she was the only reason they won. It is truly a sad day in the Bronx.

Noooooooo!
If Theo signs Kate Hudson, an offseason of adding Hudson, Lackey, Scutaro, Cameron, Boof and Heremida surely trumps CC, AJ, and Tex.
fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, shit, fuck
If Theo signs Kate Hudson…
That deal’s a non-starter. Boston does not have anyone attractive enough to actually have sex with.
Sincerely,
Kate Hudson
ORLY?
Boston disagrees. (SFW)
Mr. Ellsbury does quite well with the ladies for some reason.
Least of many evils.
Please come back Kate!
A-Rod needs to find himself some new playoff magic.
ESPN 2? Defending champs opening the season vs their historic rivals and they’re putting it on ESPN2? Damn.
The Yankees are bad for baseball.
And for religious Jews it marks the second year in a row that a holiday mars an opener. Last year it was the home opener. That Sunday night marks the beginning of the last days of Passover. Why can’t the Yanks play that game in the afternoon?
Hah! It’s not like there are any Jews around NYC.
The Yankees are doooooomed!
If only Alex had a ghost of a chance, however slim that might be, to hook up with another beautiful woman. Sigh. Hopeless, I know.
Should we just forfeit the season at this point? Avoid injury risk.
Tiger could hook him up!
/hadtodoit
Wanna bet Hudson admits she’s one of Tiger’s mistresses?
Why not – Tiger’s bedded almost everyome else.
Maybe Jeter will take pity on ARod and throw him some sloppy seconds?
Now can we hit the panic button?

Punch monitor accordingly.
How much says Alex and Elin Nordegren end up together?
maybe my boy Jesper can make it happen. he owes elin a big one.
Who?
Jesper Parnevik
The guy who introduced them.
I bet ESPN is running the Womens College Basketball Final Four (It would not shock me if there is more interest in Yanks/Sox at Storrs than in the Lady Huskies).
I would love to new Yankee, Matt Holliday hit a 9th inning 2 run homer off of Papplebum oops Papplebon, then see Mariano strike out Mike Cameron to end the game. That would be perfect.

Absolutely not. They may put out a poor product, but they’re not insane.

Spelling is corrected. I still would love to see that occur (I wonder how Gammons (On his first regular season game on NESN) would react?

You forgot one of these:

I can see how that would happen.

I was wondering (and thank you for asking (it was very polite)).
Who’s single that A-Rod could get with?
My sister.
Kate Gosselin?
I would not wish that on anyone.
Maybe Youkilis.
Sheree Whitfield?
OOOOH, OOOH, I GOT IT:

I’d approve of this.
Who da fuck is Sheree Whitfield?
Evil MILF Housewife of Atlanta.
Fat Bob Whitfield’s ex wife.
Dude, I’d hit that shit with baby monitors.
I’m actually kinda puzzled by how the baby monitors would come into play…

Sarah Palin’s daughter?
I wish that I could change my vote on the confidence poll from “9″ to “1.”
They should do a confidence poll right now so we can see the massive plummet.
ZOMG IM VOTING NEGATIVE ELEVENTYJILLION
I figured you’d respect the poll too much to say such a thing. I’m disappointed in you.
I lol’d.
Ha!
ESPN promotes the Women’s Tournament like it is the Super Bowl. If they really cared about Yanks/Sox (The way they claim), it would not be on ESPN 2, and would be be exclusive telecast (They would want the audience from the huge New York and Boston markets). They know that after the NBA Finals are over, no one is watching ESPN unless the Yanks, Sox or Cubs are on, so that is when they get into baseball. Thank God for MLB Tonight, they do baseball right.
Assuming that it is in fact the Women’s Final Four scheduled for that Sunday bumping Sox/Yankees to ESPN2, do we actually know that the baseball game would outdraw the women’s tournament game?
Women’s basketball viewership has steadily risen, and baseball has steadily fallen. ESPN may be making the correct decision there. The tourney game might be a bigger moneymaker than a regular season baseball game, even the season opener.
Looks like the Women’s final four might win. Here are ratings from a Sunday night Yanks/Sox game and the Womens final four in 2008 (not on the same night, but both in April):
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn.....id=3338660
http://tvsportsratings.com/?p=73
It’s hard to estimate what the ratings boost would be because it’s opening night, though – in 2008 Braves/Nats beat the Yanks/Sox because that was opening night.
Thank you kindly.
(now having flashbacks to horridly unlistenable segments of radio on the Mike and the Mad Dog show)
How were those segments different from any other?
Touché.
Say something funny, Mikey.
Their ESPN contract says they can not wear bras for the telecast.
I’m watching!
One of my term papers in college dealt with demographic marketing and TV sports, so I understand the issue very well. Baseball still does well in certain markets such as St Louis, Boston and New York. For example: The World Series outdrew the NFL on Sunday Night, because of the presence of the Yankees. College Basketball will never beat the Yankees in this market, and elite players choose to go out of area to get that coverage. That is a prime reason why teams like St Johns, Seton Hall, and Rutgers are usually the bottom feeders of the Big East.
Women’s College Basketball falls even below the coverage and rooting interest of the Islanders, Devils and Nets in this market. Simply put, once you cross the Connecticut State Line into New York, no one cares.
College Basketball will never beat the Yankees in this market, and elite players choose to go out of area to get that coverage… Women’s College Basketball falls even below the coverage and rooting interest of the Islanders, Devils and Nets in this market.
ESPN’s decision isn’t about winning THIS market, however. It’s about winning the NATIONAL market.
And, as Chris noted above, there’s a very, very good chance that a national Women’s Final Four game outdraws a season opening baseball game.
I’d think MLB wouldn’t do opening night with Yanks-Sox. I say this because I figure opening night will get big ratings, regardless of the two teams playing.
Yanks-Sox will get big ratings no matter when they play.
I think exposing a team like the Angels, Rockies, Rays, Mets, Cards etc.. to the Opening Night viewers may be better in the long term for MLB.
My vote is for Brewers-Rockies.
I’m sure we’re all dying to see Randy Wolf, Latroy Hawkins, and Gregg Zaun in their new Milwaukee duds.
Funny thing being that a Gallardo-Jimenez match-up is actually pretty awesome.
I love how a ton of people will watch the MLB opener no matter who is on it, but they choose to waste a marquee match-up and force teams to play in one of the colder home locations in baseball.
Only thing better would have been something like Rangers and Minnesota at Target field.
I’m gonna laugh when the home opener for the Twins on April 12th gets snowed out.
Pavano slips on ice entering Target Field: Breaks his left leg and right wrist.
Out for Season.

BostonFAIL.
Cammy’s Grit-Factor doesn’t play well near that 420 mark in center.
Lets give one of the best outfielders in baseball the least amount of area to cover in the majors!
And one of the most overrated outfielders possibly the largest, hardest to play centerfield in the majors.
You cannot justify giving Cameron 15.5 million over 2 years if you stick him in LF at Fenway.
Now Boston can keep Lowell. Cameron has the range to play directly behind 3B and cover Fenway’s LF at the same time.
SI says Matsui signed with Anaheim..
So what now?
