Quick Hits: Scheduling quirks and Kate Hudson

By Benjamin Kabak

So two quick notes that nearly got lost in the crush earlier today: MLB announced this afternoon that the Yankees and Red Sox will open the 2010 season on Sunday, April 4. The game will start at 8:05 p.m. and air on ESPN2. The average temperate for Boston on April 4 at 8 p.m. is around 42 degrees. What a brilliant move by Major League Baseball.

Finally, capping off a busy day of news came the worst development possible for the Yankees. This has nothing to do with a free agent signing or some big trade. No, this one is all about A-Rod for he and Kate Hudson have reportedly broken up. At this point, the Yanks might as well just forfeit the 2010 season for she was the only reason they won. It is truly a sad day in the Bronx.

    Noooooooo!

If Theo signs Kate Hudson, an offseason of adding Hudson, Lackey, Scutaro, Cameron, Boof and Heremida surely trumps CC, AJ, and Tex.

fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, shit, fuck

  2. Mike Pop says:

A-Rod needs to find himself some new playoff magic.

  3. pat says:

ESPN 2? Defending champs opening the season vs their historic rivals and they’re putting it on ESPN2? Damn.

    • Mike Pop says:

The Yankees are bad for baseball.

And for religious Jews it marks the second year in a row that a holiday mars an opener. Last year it was the home opener. That Sunday night marks the beginning of the last days of Passover. Why can’t the Yanks play that game in the afternoon?

  4. Esteban says:

    The Yankees are doooooomed!

  5. jim p says:

If only Alex had a ghost of a chance, however slim that might be, to hook up with another beautiful woman. Sigh. Hopeless, I know.

Should we just forfeit the season at this point? Avoid injury risk.

  6. Reggie C. says:

Now can we hit the panic button?

  7. JMK THE OVERSHARE's Milton Bradley Fat Park Factor says:

How much says Alex and Elin Nordegren end up together?

  8. Januz says:

I bet ESPN is running the Womens College Basketball Final Four (It would not shock me if there is more interest in Yanks/Sox at Storrs than in the Lady Huskies).
I would love to new Yankee, Matt Holliday hit a 9th inning 2 run homer off of Papplebum oops Papplebon, then see Mariano strike out Mike Cameron to end the game. That would be perfect.

  9. Who’s single that A-Rod could get with?

  10. For Lack of a More Creative Name... Alex says:

I wish that I could change my vote on the confidence poll from “9″ to “1.”

  11. Januz says:

ESPN promotes the Women’s Tournament like it is the Super Bowl. If they really cared about Yanks/Sox (The way they claim), it would not be on ESPN 2, and would be be exclusive telecast (They would want the audience from the huge New York and Boston markets). They know that after the NBA Finals are over, no one is watching ESPN unless the Yanks, Sox or Cubs are on, so that is when they get into baseball. Thank God for MLB Tonight, they do baseball right.

    • Assuming that it is in fact the Women’s Final Four scheduled for that Sunday bumping Sox/Yankees to ESPN2, do we actually know that the baseball game would outdraw the women’s tournament game?

Women’s basketball viewership has steadily risen, and baseball has steadily fallen. ESPN may be making the correct decision there. The tourney game might be a bigger moneymaker than a regular season baseball game, even the season opener.

  12. Drew says:

I’d think MLB wouldn’t do opening night with Yanks-Sox. I say this because I figure opening night will get big ratings, regardless of the two teams playing.

Yanks-Sox will get big ratings no matter when they play.

I think exposing a team like the Angels, Rockies, Rays, Mets, Cards etc.. to the Opening Night viewers may be better in the long term for MLB.

  13. A.D. says:

I love how a ton of people will watch the MLB opener no matter who is on it, but they choose to waste a marquee match-up and force teams to play in one of the colder home locations in baseball.

Only thing better would have been something like Rangers and Minnesota at Target field.

Johnny Damon hosting next week’s Monday Night Raw from Tampa, Florida…

  15. It’s believed the Red Sox will make Cameron their regular left fielder, with Jacoby Ellsbury in center field and J.D. Drew in right. Jeremy Hermida, recently acquired from Florida, would serve as Boston’s fourth outfielder.
