Saturday Night Open Thread

I think all of the MSM is enjoying some time with their families before the hell of the Winter Meetings, hence the slow news day. It’s okay, things will start getting rather psychotic tomorrow, so rest up and use this thread to talk about whatever you want. The Rangers are in Buffalo, plus there’s a zillion college football games on. You know what’s up, so enjoy the thread.

  1. Not matter what happens, Tim Tebow will still be a very successful mohel next year.

    ****SHAMELESS PROMOTION ALERT***
Check the link on my name. We need everyone to join.
Remember, Melvin loves us, even if our mothers don’t.

    Florida is getting killed

  3. I don’t like either team.

  4. Here’s why the Gators are losing:

Those horrible Good Humor ice-cream-man uniforms.

    For shame, Nike.

  5. Kiersten says:

Are there any non-Gator fans actually rooting for Florida? I don’t think so.

    • Salty Buggah says:

Don’t know why but I am

    • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

Yes, because even though they’re favored the National media made Florida sound like the underdog. And, BTW, I actually like Tim Tebow and think that, by virtue of everybody saying he’s overrated he’s become underrated. I think the kid really does have a decent pro career in front of him.

      • Who says Tebow is overrated? I’d say you hear him called the greatest college football player of all time an exponentially more amount of times than you hear that.

        • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

The common line I hear with Tebow is “he’s a good college player, but he’ll be a terrible NFL player”.

          Fuck, Red Wings scored.

          • Well you can say that about a lot of good college players. Some guys are good in the college game and just don’t translate to the NFL. That’s not really the same thing as calling him an overrated college guy (which he is, but that’s more about the hype than anything else).

    • Alex K. says:

I’m a Georgia fan and I’m rooting for Tebow. Used to hate him because I thought he was overrated, but you know what? I’d love to have a guy like him as my QB. He’s a winner, inspirational, and regardless of if people disagree with his religious beliefs, at least he’s genuine and seems like a really good person.

    And funny.

  9. Mike Pop says:

Sigh. No love for the Isles.

  10. Pussies. Step on their Gator throats.

  11. Kiersten says:

STUFF IT, GATORS!!!! NO NATIONAL TITLE FOR YOUUUUUUUUU!

  12. Drew says:

    Tebow sadface. haha

  13. Mike Pop says:

Why all the hate on Tebow and Florida?

    • I kinda hate Tebow for the same reason I hate Favre—it’s really not him, it’s the coverage thereof.

I’m also not big on the super-Christian thing, but that’s another story.

      • Mike Pop says:

Understandable. I really don’t care one way or the other, but if I could have chose – I would of wanted Florida to win this game. Plus, I’d rather see more coverage of a Tim Tebow doing good things than some other idiot college athlete getting arrested for some kind of misdemeanor.

    • Drew says:

Maybe it’s a bit petty but I don’t buy, nor like his holier than thou act.

      • Alex K. says:

How’s it an act? There’s no evidence to the contrary. I’m a die-hard UGA fan and even I gotta admit the guy seems genuinely good. I think people have a hard time grasping that a “celebrity” can just be that good of a person.

        • Drew says:

Eh, a bit too perfect for me. To be honest, if he was on Miami I’d probably like him but whatevs.

        • Mike Pop says:

Check out his girlfriend too: http://tinyurl.com/yzh4b4b

I find it hard to believe he hasn’t got with her because of the whole virgin till marriage thing. I mean, damn, look at her.

        • Zack says:

I’m not going to call it an act, but I just don’t need to hear about God 21 times per 4 minute interview. That’s his faith and that’s fine, but it’s like anything- if you put it infront of the camera long enough it rubs people the wrong way.

          • This is my sentiment, as well. It annoys me when Josh Hamilton does it, too.

            • Zack says:

And Dwight Howard, who then gets a magic cheerleader pregnant.

              • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

Yes well hypocrisy is a different matter.

                • Zack says:

I didnt mean it as Tebow is a hyprocrit or anything; but like everything a small number of people ruin it for everyone else.

I dont watch sports to be preached too, especially when 90% of them are hypocrits, and it sucks for the other 10% but oh well.

                • I wonder what the reaction by the media would be if an athlete was very vehemently atheistic.

                • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

“Vehemently atheistic” is probably the state of a lot of those athletes. The very fact of being atheistic means they have nothing to profess.

                • I mean really beating that atheist drum like a lot of players do for their respective religions–giving talks, organizing groups, etc.

                • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

That would mean you’re not really atheistic, because that’s turning atheism into a religion. Atheists profess to have no beliefs.

                • Religion means something is being worshiped. Giving talks, writing books, forming groups, etc., is not making atheism a religion, but just talking about it.

Mostly, I’m just curious as to what the reaction would be. That’s all.

                • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

I know what you mean, but if you’re giving talks and shit, that means you have specific beliefs, which contradicts atheism.

                • Yes, atheists have beliefs: they believe there is no God or gods. That’s still a belief.

                • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

                  It depends on the atheists.

Trust me, I’ve studied this. Certain atheists just say they have no idea whether there’s a God/gods or not.

Anyway, It’s kind of hard to profess athism since that’s their ONLY belief. Everything else depends on the atheist.

If you start making specific criteria for lack of belief in God/gods, it stops becoming just a lack of religious beliefs and turns into a club.

                • Trust me, I’ve studied this. Certain atheists just say they have no idea whether there’s a God/gods or not.

Those aren’t atheists; those are agnostics. That’s what I am and there’s a subtle, but important, difference.

If you start making specific criteria for lack of belief in God/gods, it stops becoming just a lack of religious beliefs and turns into a club.

I’m not making any sort of criteria. If you don’t believe in God, you don’t believe in God.

                • Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

I apologize (and myself looking really stupid for saying I studied this). Of course those are agnsotics. My bad.

But I really did study this, and I’m not saying you made any criteria. I’m just saying that since atheists have no beliefs but one, their really isn’t much they could preach. If they make any other riteria for atheism, it’s not atheism.

I’m also not making any judgements on atheists or agnostics, negative or otherwise. Just want to be clear on that.

              • Did not know about either one of those things.

    • For the same reason everyone hates the Cowboys, Pop ;)

    • Kiersten says:

    • Kiersten says:

Oh, also, Florida quite possibly has the most obnoxious fans in all of sports (think about Red Sox fans and then think about what I just said).

  15. Mike Pop says:

Hockey fans – Did the Islanders make a mistake picking Tavares over Victor?

    • Mike Axisa says:

No, either was fine. The old saying is that you build a team from the net out (like building a baseball team up the middle), so maybe Hedman would have been a better pick. Both are studs, though.

  16. Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

Damn, just checked the Devils store, already up 2-0 on a really good team.

    We’re fucking good this year.

    Soriano May Accept Arbitration
By Zach Links [December 5 at 5:30pm CST]

After it was reported earlier this week that Braves reliever Rafael Soriano would look for employment elsewhere, his agent tells Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.com that his client is giving serious consideration to accepting arbitration.

He may not be a FA after all. Could be a smart move if he takes it, he could get more than he would as a FA and then he can hope the economy improves next year, when he’d hit the market as a 31 year old. Only real risk is injury, and given his history, that’s significant.

BTW-Zach Links is not a real name. A blogger calling himself that is so cheesy.

  22. Salty Buggah says:

So my computer is a bit better somehow today (really, after not working at all yesterday, it’s perfectly fine today). But I dont trust it, so should I just reinstall Windows anyway?

Has anyone heard anything about Yu Darvish?

    • Yes, I’ve heard. Kills men by the hundreds. And if HE were here, he’d consume the English with fireballs from his eyes, and bolts of lightning from his arse.

      But, seriously, nothing.

        FREEEEEEDDDOOOOOMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmaaaaaahhhhhhhhh.

        • My favorite SportsCenter moment ever:

It was in ’06, during the NCAA tournament, and someone named “Wallace” for one of the teams made a last second shot and as the play was developing, Scott Van Pelt goes “Every man dies not every man really lives…” and as the shot goes in he yells “…FREEDOM!”

  28. There is something unsettling about Chico Resch saying “yummy yummy”

  38. I think the Yankees should sign Wily Mo Pena to a minor league contract, have him play in Scranton for a while and see if they can straighten him out. He’ll still only be 28 in January. PLUS….he’s scary as hell. He’s the Dominican Shelley Duncan.

    • Steve H says:

From 22-24 he had an OPS+ of 110 over 1003 PA’s. Worth a shot. And if there is ever a brawl, he’s your man. When he was with the Sox, I’d always give my Sox friends shit asking why they had a Patriot linebacker playing CF for them. Just stick him in front of a pitching machine and feed him about 10,000 curveballs.

      • On the Licey roster, he’s listed at 6’3″ 270 lbs. Holy Frijoles. That’s one big Dominican.

        Haha. Google Translator from Licey.com

“Wily Mo is so hot that not even a rag can be grasped.”

        I like that expression.

    MOTHERFUCKING TEXAS DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  43. JMK aka The Overshare says:

So I’m thinking about moving to Harlem. Rent is cheap ($1000) for a real 1 BR on 137th, no broker, right near the 2,3 line. Good idea?

  44. JMK aka The Overshare says:

I’m pissed he made that. What a shitty year of college football. Worst one in a long time.

  45. Drew says:

    Arguelles to the Royals? Boo.

    • JMK aka The Overshare says:

Cash$ should have snuck in last second, Ynoa-style.

Great signing for the Royals though. If they decided to take the money they spend on shitty players like Guillen, Farns, Jacobs, and invested that money in high-upside young guys, fans might have something to look forward to.

    • Evil Empire says:

If thats true its Moore’s first good move since the Greinke extension. And its not like that one was a tough decision at the time.

  46. Rocky Road Redemption (formerly RAB poster) says:

Some dude on yankees.com wrote this about Molina. Seriously.

Well actually anyone who says the man didn’t contribute in a major way is just wrong – defense is just as important as offense. With that line up it shouldn’t matter. I like Molina and he added smarts to the line up. And if anyone was the Cancer to the team it was Posada, getting all upset when Molina was going to catch Burnett in the post season. He doesn’t own the back stop position. They are a team and the second game of the World Series, that Molina caught, was crucial. Don’t wish he goes to Boston – that could come back to haunt the Yankees. Cervelli needs some time to blossom. Resign Molina for another year…

This is up there with some of the stupidest, most ridiculous comments I’ve ever read.

    • Evil Empire says:

If Game 2 of the WS was Molina’s doing, than so was the first inning of Game 5.

      Logic FAIL.

      • Evil Empire says:

Oh and Molina to the BoSox would be a blessing. They’d probably have 3 catchers on the 25 man roster and two of them are putrid offensively. Either that or they’d just eat ‘Tek’s contract, and that would bring its own sense of joy.

  47. larryf says:

What percent of the time does Molina even TOUCH first base when he grounds out? I guess if he did touch, half the time the other team would be back in the dugout or our next batter would have taken the first pitch already…
