I also loved his game-tying HR off of Glavine in the 1999 WS… I’m pretty sure this was the Chad Curtis walk-off game where Pettitte got beat up really early and the Yankees launched an epic comeback.

The things the 1996-2001 Yankees did were pretty crazy.

Nomar would have been my #2. It doesn’t pain me to say was pretty friggin’ awesome before he fell apart. I think most of the advanced offensive stats favored Jeter over Nomar by a hair.

i always felt disappointed when I saw him at the plate – while most people ascribed his lower offensive production to not being on the turf, he never appeared to have that confidence at the plate like he had in Minnesota.

i think that spilled over to his less-aggressive baserunning as well, and while the back end of his career was a mess, from the very beginning i remember thinking he played less effectively than his numbers indicate.

He and Jeter were going to be the keystone combo for 8-10 years, but it just never worked out

Also, while many would hate to admit it, Nomar with a .357/.418/.630 line, while likely playing a better SS (higher range factors), was more deserving that Jeter.

There were like a good 15 player who could have won that year or would have won most years.

Meh, Pudge Rodriguez putting up a .332/.356/.558 with 600 plate appearances and 35 HR/113 RBI from the catcher spot… with the best catcher defense in the league, that’s a compelling argument. Jeter was the bombdigs, but Pudge was a very worthy 1999 MVP, IMO.
