Open Thread: Washed out

By

Two straight days without baseball because of rain, what a shame. A.J. Burnett and Andy Pettitte, the scheduled starters for the last two days, had to throw simulated games instead of facing real live batters. Such is life. Hopefully the rain lets up and we’ll get some games in over the weekend.

Here’s your open thread for the night. The Rangers, Devils, Nets, and Knicks are all in action, and I’m sure there’s some college basketball on somewhere. You know what to do.

Heh, I thought the thing about Blossom’s period sent it into near-parody territory too. I’m not a dude, but I’m pretty sure that if I was a dude talking about hot ladies, and then I started talking about periods, it would pretty much put me off the hot ladies.

      • First, check your email, Bexy. Second, listen here. I talk about women’s periods ALL THE TIME. Usually my mother’s looming struggle with menopause and uneasy ascension into days spent with the cats and The View. Guess what? Bitches love that shit. Sure, some say, “Oh my God, you’re disgusting and creepy and should be shunned from 99% of society and not allowed to live within 500 yards of a school zone.” Some. Not all.

The others are all like, “Wow, you really understand women. Hey, care to have a rousing chat on the science of how boogers eventually transform into dust?”

        That’s right. Then…we fuck.

    • TJ says:

      That was awesome.

Thorton sounds like a total douche.

I just want everyone to know that I FJMed (poorly) that Bleacher Report article the other day for M&A and IT WAS LIKE 15 PAGES LONG ON MICROSOFT WORD GODDAMN

And when I started writing it, it was like… 9 PM. The next time I looked at the time it was 2:49 AM. o_O

  5. Hey ZZ says:

Mike, I was just reading the chat from today and saw you think Crawford will get 4/45. That sounds great to me, but Crawford seems like one of those guys some stupid team like the Royals ridiculously overpays for. What do you guys think?

    • Thomas says:

I agree, I think 4/45 is way too low. At age 28, he is probably going to try and look for at least 5 years maybe more with much more money. If Jason Bay gets 4/66 with an easy option to get 5/80, Crawford is definitely going to try for at least that and likely more.

    • Zack says:

I think the Angels will be after him, he fits their whole defense/speed thing, and they’d move Abreu or Rivera to DH.
Fits in with Seattle too, move Bradley to DH and Griffey retires.
Depending on what goes on with the Dodgers’ ownership I could see them replacing Manny with him; I’m sure Torre is a fan after facing him over the years.
Nationals are always looking to get a FA to sign.
      Maybe the Giants.
      Maybe the Reds.

I see him getting more than 45m.

      • Joey Time says:

Yea, gotta agree. I really imagine Carl Crawford getting at least 5 years @ 60 plus…
Now considering how he might really want to be a Yankee (Since we present the best chance to win yearly) and since he fits the Yankees line-up @ Either lead-off or 2nd, perfectly. I have no problem letting cash go for him… but not open the flood-gates and overpay…
I remember reading here on the past that he will be aging and since his game is built primarily around speed, he’s likely to decline a bit towards the tail end of the contract if not before. As opposed to a power hitter who’s power could sustain these years 28-35… Just my 2 cents, I say go for him because over the 28-32 years he will be worth the Cash…

        • Zack says:

Yeah, it’s all about price. If its gets up around 80m then no, but 60m sounds pretty fair to me.

          • YankeesJunkie says:

Sounds about right. When looking at Crawford he will be 29 when he comes to his new team in 2011. That gives him about three to give years of prime and near prime production. Crawford plays a mean LF, gets on base, and he can fly. I can’t really see him being worth more than $15 million dollars, however five years at 60-70 million would be a fair deal and owuld be a great fit for the Yankees in the #2 hole.

Chad did you see Jerry Thornton’s piece over on WEEI about geeks taking over the world? Was that satire? What I don’t get (and I’m a Yankee fan), is that there are so many people bashing Theo for using sabermetrics and not RBI to judge players. Do they really want to go back to the way it was done for 85 years before Theo got here?

    Chad Finn:
I didn’t see it, but I’ll check it out. Jerry’s stuff is usually outstanding. In general, though, I think people who categorically dismiss sabermetrics are exposing themselves as pretty closed-minded. It doesn’t have to be one or the other. I love baseball aesthetically, and I’m probably TOO nostalgic about it, but I also get a lot of joy from learning to look at the game from different angles and perspectives. Some of the sabermetric stuff I like (OPS+, VORP), some I don’t, but it’s not an all or nothing proposition, you know? There are a lot of way to evaluate and enjoy the game.

Finn is a good writer at the Boston Globe, he essentially blogs and does a media column. I really hope he reads and addresses Thornton’s nonsense.

  10. Mike Axisa says:

Just had a three homer game with Chase Utley in The Show. Never did it before in that game. He was on deck when I made my last offensive out, so I was close to getting a shot for four homers.

    Completely overshadowed Jon Lester’s 8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 9 K performance.

  11. Without making a comment about my lack of a life, should I read or work on a jigsaw puzzle?

  12. kunaldo says:

Hey guys, so I heard Buster Olney talking about how it’s too early to judge pitchers on their performances in roughly 2 ST Starts. He cited that although Joba stunk it up the other day, Yankees officials were encouraged b/c he was around 93/94 from the start(then tired out b/c he didnt have the stamina yet). I know, velocity isn’t the end-all-be-all in pitching effectiveness, but did anyone hear/see this too?

    • Zack says:

      lies. lies. lies.
Joba is purposely not pitching well as a starter because he KNOWS he belongs in the 8th inning!1!

  13. YankeesJunkie says:

No, since the game was not on TV you could not get a personal feel how good the pitchers were other than reporters who were at the game. However, 93/94 would not shock me and it is only the 2nd start of the ST and Joba had the flu a week ago. The important thing is that Joba gets his pitches in.

Quick question, why doesn’t YES use the stadium’s radar gun as that seems more accurate, or just spend a couple grand on getting a good gun. If pitch F/X can do it I don’t see why a multi billion dollar TV channel cannot. The fans would greatly appreciate it.

    • kunaldo says:

Yeah it would be nice to have a gun that didn’t measure Mo’s cutters in the 60s(randomly)

      • Poopy Pants says:

Did anyone else hear that a pitch actually LOSES velocity from the time it leaves a pitchers hand??? It doesn’t gain! Loses! I know…I know…pretty wierd, but I heard it from a very WISE man on Fox Sports last year!

        • YankeesJunkie says:

Really, I did not know that. I thought it got faster as it got closer to plate. Nex thing you are going to say that earth is circular and that the sun does not revolve around the earth.

I’m trying to plan my fantasy draft strategy for the later rounds. Anyone else think it’s worth taking a chance on Carmona bouncing back?
