Pettitte throws his first game* of the spring
ByFor the first time since Game Six of the World Series, Andy Pettitte took to the mound today against hitters trying to do some damage off him. He threw a two inning simulated game on a back field of the Tampa complex, throwing 36 pitches total to Colin Curtis (a lefty) and Randy Winn (a switch hitter). “Mentally, I feel like I’m seeing my pitches,” said Pettitte. “Especially, at my age, I’m happy at 9 o’clock in the morning to be able to get it going, I was up at 5:30 trying to get ready for this.”
Sometime in the next week, the bullpen trio of Mariano Rivera, Damaso Marte, and Chan Ho Park will get into an exhibition game. Pettitte and Javy Vazquez are the only remaining members of the projected starting rotation that have not yet gotten into a game against opposing players, but that should happen this week.

I wonder if he threw all his pitches.
I highly doubt it. It was just his first outing of the spring.
For example, like AJ Burnett yesterday, I doubt Andy threw a curve this morning.
I’m listening to the Minny play by play guys – Joe Nathan is getting a precautionary MRI after feeling tightness in his elbow. One of the guys said that Nathan threw ‘a lot’ of breaking pitches b/c the catcher (not Mauer) called for them.
I remember Jim Kaat talking about just throwing fastballs and change-ups during early ST to build arm strength.
Yeah I don’t think he threw the big curve, I was more talking about the cut and slider.
the cut, maybe. I don’t think that puts extra stress on the elbow or shoulder. A slider puts more stress on the elbow, I think.
Any particular reason these guys are off to a slower start than the others?
I was wondering that also. I know they held Andy back on purpose, but is there a reason why Javier hasnt seen game action yet ?
Probably just the way it shakes out. We don’t want Javy driving two hours on a bus to start. We also don’t want him coming into a game in the 3rd inning.
Good point about the 2 hour bus ride.
I’m guessing you’re referring to why Javy, Andy, Marte and Mo are getting into games later than others. I’m going to guess they wanted to see how the younger guys that most likely won’t make the team perform. Those guys listed are also veterans and probably have their own off-season routines that work. I’d be surprised if one week in early March threw them off. It’s probably a combination of brass wanting to see young guys, it not being imperative that the veterans get their licks in during the first week.
Now, if you’re referring to the team getting off to a slower start than others, there could be so many factors. Maybe Eiland only wants them throwing fastballs and changes, as scooter said above. Maybe the goal is just to get them back into the groove of throwing the ball and not going max effort. Maybe they’re playing more young guys/nobodies than the average team. Maybe the hitters are working on going the opposite way. Maybe the guys are just rusty. Maybe the sample is too small.
There are so many things we could speculate on it being.
Yeah, I meant the individuals.
To echo what you’re saying, I hope no one is reading anything into ‘results’ so far. Hopefully guys are just getting their work in
Today, Mitre was very solid over 3 innings. Gaudin gave up a solo HR in his 2nd inning; Eiland tried to stretch him into a 3rd inning – he gave up a solo HR to Kubel and a double.
Then Igawa loaded the bases and gave up a grand slam – so at least Kei’s in midseason form.
people also said that Igawa got what should have been like five or six outs, but the defense (who I think didn’t include any of the regulars at this point) was really bad.
Yeah, who cares about the results, only thing to worry about is a guy getting hurt.
And of course, there’s the Jesus watch
Jesus with a double off Jesse Crain. Don’t mess with the Jesus
There are so many things we could speculate on it being.
A) The team saw their PECOTA projections for the season and have already thrown in the towel.
B) Tired of hearing that they might not be “hungry” enough to win it all again, the team has been overloading on carbohydrates leading to sluggish play in the field.
C) The Curse of Nick Johnson/Randy Winn/Johnny Damon.
D) The team is utterly demoralized after the trade of the (almost) First-Husband of the Governor of California.
E) Everyone is standing around waiting for the winner of the Hughes-Chamberlain death match.
ahahahahahahahahahah ietc.
(following the game thread on LoHud and/or people that have MLB.tv on Twitter makes me want to sob because those locations are in full PANIC MODE!.)
Just never, ever go there again
heh
Some of the subtitles on *yankees.com* make me want to headdesk, though…
1) They made a long trip today for a road game, and they almost never send any of the regular starters on long trips.
2) They said they were going to hold them back early in camp after last year’s workload.
It is really not much to worry about as long as they get 5 starts or so they should be ready for the regular season.
It does seem lethargic. I hope its not andy’s last year. He’s a work horse!

See, I told you. The problem this year is not the Rays or the Red Sox, but breads and pastas.
Fight the real enemy!
hahaha ietc (but not as much as the original one)
I want to make a tasteless joke here, but I won’t.
Speaking of Andy, apparently he’s at the Lakers/Magic game with CC right now and they’re showing them a whole bunch. For those of you that have ABC, and didn’t get it cut off. ;_;
