Report: Yanks’ brass to meet Sunday to discuss the fifth starter

Via Joel Sherman, the Yankees have a meeting planned for this Sunday to discuss the fifth starter situation. The prevailing thought seems to be that Phil Hughes is at the front of the line for the job, sending Joba Chamberlain back to the bullpen, but I can’t imagine that the brain trust is going to base the decision on each player’s first three Spring Training appearances if it is in fact a true “open competition.” Stranger things have happened, I guess.

Either way, there might be some progress towards a resolution with this mess situation soon, and Mo knows we’re all looking forward to it. Maybe they’ll talk about the trade partner they found for Sergio Mitre following his strong exhibition season. Wishful thinking?

I don’t understand how Joba isn’t leading the pack. I view his and Phil’s ST as being equally good, and i think with going into the season with no limits, Joba makes more sense.

    • Teix is the Man says:

He may very well be, nobody can know for sure unless they actually sit in on daily meetings.

      • pete says:

that. we haven’t heard or been able to come up with ourselves many rational reasons why Phil would be the guy over Joba, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re not out there.

      • W.W.J.M.D. says:

I just don’t think it is one fo those things some mystery person would make up.

        • Teix is the Man says:

Again… we, being the fans, do not know what the organization is thinking. As a result, it would be silly to listen to illogical theories from “anonymous people from within the organization”.

          • W.W.J.M.D. says:

Well whats different from thinking that this could be true and not trade rumors of trades that are close to completion? We the fans believe trades have happened without any official word from the organization, whos to say it can’t be true, despite it being illogical, for Hughes to be in the lead.

            • Teix is the Man says:

Oh no, that’s fine…I’m just saying nothing is definitive because nobody from the organization (i.e Cashman) has been quoted as saying that so-and-so is actually in the lead…
I think that your argument is a bit of a straw man- you are now mentioning trade scenarios, when in fact your first post is exclusively about Joba and Phil.

              • W.W.J.M.D. says:

Well im not accepting it as complete truth, but i would not be surprised if the team thought Joba would be better served setting up for Mo. I was going more along the lines of pointing out that it makes more sense for Joba to start if he is showing he can, since we wont have to worry about any rules for him.

And i choose to compare trade rumors to the Phil being in the lead mystery sayings because they both equal to “someone within the orginazation with knowledge of the talks but must remain nameless because nothing is official…” type of talk. I understand they are “apples” and “oranges” but they are both fruits.

  2. king of fruitless hypotheticals says:

Maybe they’ll talk about the trade partner they found for Sergio Mitre following his strong exhibition season.

Sergio Meattray IS the fifth starter. Joba and Phil can go fight it out in Scranton for a while.

    • pete says:

literally, they’re going to fight it out. it’s gonna be awesome. and bloody. and while both of them are probably going to end up with broken ribs, dislocated shoulders, and facial injuries and lacerations, we think it’s going to be good for their development.

  3. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

I hope the discussion is whether Hughes or Joba should start, and that Girardi doesn’t even bring up Mitre, Aceves or Gaudin. I’d be in absolute shock to see any of the later three win the job.

  4. nathan says:

I think the loser of Joba/Hughes should goto AAA… i see a Andy injury coming…

  5. I say we solve this old school Dusty Baker style. Give Joba and Hughes 1,000 balls each and have them throw fastballs non-stop. First one to drop to the floor clutching his shoulder loses.

  6. JobaWockeeZ says:

It doesn’t make much sense to not have Joba be the 5th starter. We went through all the rules for a transition to the bullpen?

Hopefully this meeting is a meeting discussing why Joba is the ball.
