Spring Training Game Thread: Brackman in action

By

A.J Burnett will start against his former team this afternoon while showing off his new changeup for a pair of innings, but the big story is that 2007 first round pick Andrew Brackman is scheduled to pitch today. For many of us, it’s the first time we’ll get to see the 6-foot-10 righthander since he turned a pro. Here’s what he looked in college like almost four years ago, so it’ll be interesting to compare his delivery to what it is today. As luck would have it, Chad Jennings interviewed Brackman yesterday, who said he finally feels normal after coming back from Tommy John surgery (ST cliche alert).

Anyway, I’m looking forward to see the big guy on the mound, as well as Burnett’s change. Phil Hughes‘ looked pretty good yesterday, so let’s how A.J.’s is coming along. Here’s the starting lineup…

Jeter, SS
Granderson, CF
Posada, C
A-Rod, 3B
Winn, RF
Gardner, LF
Cervelli, DH
Miranda, 1B
Pena, 2B

Scheduled Pitchers: A.J. Burnett, Andrew Brackman, Jon Albaladejo, Boone Logan, Mark Melancon, Jason Hirsh, Romulo Sanchez, Amaury Sanit

Also scheduled to play: Colin Curtis, Jamie Hoffmann, Brandon Laird, Eduardo Nunez, Mike Rivera, Austin Romine, Kevin Russo, Jorge Vazquez, David Winfree

First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm ET, and you can watch on My9 locally or MLB Network from afar.

  1. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

Does anyone know if gameday is available anywhere? I’ve looked and can’t find it anywhere. Same thing happened last spring, it was available but hard to find.

  2. Tank the Frank says:

Damn AJ got some more tatts.

  3. chriskeo says:

Listening on the radio now, they are talking about how Cashman said the team would be stronger if Joba and Hughes were both in the pen. Then they went on to say how much better they would be in the bullpen as a strength.

I think we need a new word for theses people (both to the pen)

  4. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

A bunch of huge guys today like Bracks and Hirsh.

  5. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    AJ looking good

  6. KyleLitke says:

Unless you’re foolish enough to live in CT, in which case My9 isn’t showing it and MLB Network is blacked out for a game not being aired in this area.

Oh well, wanted to see Brackman, but I guess it’s just a spring game.

    • Johan Iz My Brohan says:

I live in CT and I’m watching it on my9?…..

    • Thomas says:

There not showing it in CT, because UConn is on at 2. As much as I’d like to see Brackman, I much rather see an important UConn game over a spring training game.

      GO UCONN!

      • KyleLitke says:

I’m more annoyed about how blackouts work, and that MLB Network can’t show it here when it isn’t even being shown here. They did the same thing Thursday, only being able to show it delayed. Showing UCONN is fine, you just can’t tell me that they don’t have the ability to figure out where something is being shown and block it appropriately. I’m sure they do, they just don’t care.

I used to have that problem before they got SNY and NESN in my area. Any Red Sox or Mets game were totally blocked out on ESPN or on MLB TV, even though I couldn’t get those channels. It’s unfortunate the way they do them.

        • Thomas says:

I agree completely. Up at UConn, I couldn’t get MLB TV even if I wanted to since it is blacked out despite the fact UConn and Charter cable services don’t carry YES.

          • Adham says:

Wow, I guess I came back home at the right time.I go to school at UConn and I came back to Stamford,CT for spring break and their showing the game over here…GO UConn and GO Yankees (But if i had to choose, I’d Stick with the Yankees).

            • Anthony says:

Yea it is absolutely ridiculous that us at UCONN can’t do anything. I just get the audio from mlb.com and listen to that. It makes no sense, at home near New Haven I get the Red Sox, Mets, and Yanks and I watch em all. At UCONN there are no Mets and Yanks, and it gets blacked out when they are on ESPN too. Why would it get blacked out when we aren’t in their market. AHHHH makes me so frustrated haha.

        • MikeD says:

So when MLB shows the game, I would guess they pick up the direct Yankee feed, with the Yankee broadcasters? I ask only because I’ll never see a Yankee game on MLB Network as they’ll always be blacked out.

  7. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

Want to know something crazy? Andrew Brackman has pierced nipples.

  8. Mike Axisa says:

    More two out hits? Aaargh.

    /kidding

  9. Yankee1010 says:

Uh oh. AJ has allowed 2 baserunners so far in the 1st. I eagerly await the columns from the rag tabloids saying he belongs in the pen.

    • The Evil Empire says:

      Shut up

      • andrew says:

        yup. definitely getting old.

        • KyleLitke says:

I dunno, I think it’ll be old when people stop overreacting to a couple innings in Spring. Since they continue to freak out everytime he allows a hit…I find it amusing.

There’s also the irony that Joba was RELIEVING yesterday.

          • andrew says:

But that’s the thing, do people actually freak out every time he allows a hit? or are we just mocking a caricature? Obviously, this is just my opinion, but the caricature is becoming a bit too much. It’s annoying every time Joba allows a hit for a few people to type “oh no!1!!11!! Joba to teh 8th!1!!1″

I don’t know why, but I don’t really mind the people who make fun of Kruk, Gammons, whoever else it may be, but for some reason I just find the Lohudian caricature to be a bit annoying.

  10. Mike Axisa says:

    There’s a changeup.

  11. JoeyH says:

I’m sure a ton of Michael Kay haters would love to see Kay suffocate despite that CO2 detector.

  12. Jamal G. says:

The Daily News interviewed Andrew Brackman, too (it’s at the bottom of the article): http://www.nydailynews.com/spo.....start.html

    • Tank the Frank says:

Yeah, everyone be warned that the rest of the article is nauseating. Skipt to the Brackman video.

  13. Tank the Frank says:

Kay in top form this afternoon.

  14. Mike Pop says:

    A.J.!

  15. Mike Pop says:

Okay Michael Kay, we know this.

  16. Tank the Frank says:

Is it me or does Aaron Hill look like Evan Longoria?

  17. Hangoverologist says:

I can’t wait to see Brack pitch. Future ace if figures it all out? Yes please.

  18. pat says:

    Overbay kills us.

  19. Alex S says:

that hair is adding way too much wind resistance, gardner should shave it off

  20. pat says:

    more like BOOOOOOOOOone Logan.

    We want brackman.

    • Yes to this. I want to see Jose Ramirez too. But that’s not gonna happen. Too bad.

      • Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

I’m trying to schedule some time to go over to watch some minor league games. I promise I’ll get there for you, JMK. Give me your wish list of pictures to be taken.

        • Nice. I’m going to make my way to SWB and Trenton over the upcoming season. There aren’t a whole lot of positional players to get excited about at Tampa, though I’d love to get some shots and scouting reports on Brack, ManBan, Cotham, Warren. Any idea exactly who will be at GCL from DSL Yankees?

    • bexarama says:

heh, remember when Clay Aiken (I think) got booed during the 2003 World Series while he was singing the National Anthem and people were like, “No, no, they’re chanting ‘Aaron BOOOOOOOOne’”? Except, uh, why would they yell BOOOOOOne when Clay Aiken was singing? Heh.

      • Nigel Bangs says:

        I was saying Boo-urns…

      • Tank the Frank says:

That was awesome. My absolute favorite was the 2005 National Championship game (OU vs USC) where Ashley Simpson was got booed off the stage at halftime. Then after everyone stopped booing it got real quiet and some guy who must have been close to a camera mic screamed out “You SUCK!” clear as day. I couldn’t stop laughing.

  21. pat says:

Nice Juan. FLashing the hot leather.

  22. bexarama says:

No one should have to listen to my mom going on and on about AJ’s win-loss record last year.

    • Tank the Frank says:

My mom still watches games with me and asks what ERA is.

      • bexarama says:

Heh. That’s like my dad. He thought a strike was when the batter swung at something and a ball was when they didn’t. And he still doesn’t understand the whole four balls/three strikes thing.

(WTF why is Cervelli always getting beaten up in these ST games???)

  23. pat says:

    GODDAMN IT STOP HURTING FRANKIE

  24. Brent says:

Whoever is pitching right now (just turned it on) has shit control.

    Hope ‘Cisco is all right.

  25. Tank the Frank says:

Cervelli… my goodness spring is not kind to him.

  26. Holy crap. Don’t murder Frankie.

Yankees’ Venezuelan catchers need freaking bodyguards.

  27. pat says:

    Romine, nice.

  28. Rose says:

    Burnett – 1.2 IP, 5 hits, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K = http://myfutureinfocus.files.w.....-myfnf.jpg (SAFE)

  29. Jose Molina in great shape? I don’t care how many lbs. he lost; he is not in “great shape”.

  30. Accent Shallow says:

Better player: Ramiro Pena or a 14-year old Derek Jeter.

    Discuss.

  31. “Tagged out by Posada.”

    Isn’t Romine catching now?

  32. Accent Shallow says:

Ah, Merkin Valdez. One of the all-time great names.

  33. Tank the Frank says:

Holy crap. Bad news for Cisco.

  34. bexarama says:

    Oh God Cervelli ;_;

  35. Hangoverologist says:

Apparently the spring really hates Cervelli. Hope he recovers from the concussion quickly.

  36. Watching that was a bit uncomfortable.

  37. Tank the Frank says:

Girardi says Cervelli had a concussion over the winter…hit in the head with a backswing. Didn’t know that. Man, I hope he’s ok.

  38. bexarama says:

So far I heard Mike Pelfrey and Joe Nathan also got hurt today, WTF?

  39. pat says:

Albie is punching that ticket to Scranton.

  40. dalelama says:

Is Nick ‘Tender Tissue’ Johnson playing today? Or is the turf too treacherous?

  41. Mike Axisa says:

Albaladejo has to regain those 30 pounds back, me thinks.

  42. bexarama says:

    Yeeesh, Albie.

  43. pat says:

Ok time to get him off the mound.

  44. pat says:

    OOO MELANCON YAAAAYYY

    • Hangoverologist says:

Any chance Melancon makes the roster this year a la D-Rob?

      • Drew says:

        AJ
        AP
        CC
        Joba
        Phil
        Javy
        Mo
        Marte
        D-Rob
        Park
        Gaudin
        Ace
        Mitre

I think we’re pretty much packed for now.

      • pat says:

Might not break camp but he’s most likely the first guy called up. He’s a very solid pitcher. The control problems we saw last year in the majors we’re not typical of him at all.
In the majors he walked 10 in 15 innings. In his entire career in the minors he’s only walked 35 in 155 innings.

  45. ROBTEN says:

Breaking news from Girardi: Reggie Corona is a baseball player.

  46. RollingWave says:

well, can we have Tyler Clippard back?

  47. Hangoverologist says:

Finally, the inning is over. I hope Albie gets sent south to SWB.

  48. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

    Jon Albaladejo’s ERA is a smooth 189.00

  49. RollingWave says:

Wow I know only 3 guys the Jays currently have on the field, and uhhh wow, Adam Loewen

  50. Drew says:

WE WANT BRACKMAN!! WE WANT BRACKMAN!

  51. pat says:

    Holy shit. Lairdo.

  52. Drew says:

    Dayyyumm Laird’s got a gun.

  53. bexarama says:

Gathright went to the Blue Jays? Huh.

    (Nice play by Laird)

  54. RollingWave says:

ZOMG WE SUCK TIME TO PUSH THE PANIC BUTTON!!! TRADE EVERYONE!!!

  55. Tank the Frank says:

    Hellevu play!

  56. pat says:

got Ruiz looking outside. Time for high and tight cheese.

  57. pat says:

    Vazquez is a fuckin monster.

  58. JSquared says:

Does Vazquez tag the ball like that often?

  59. Tank the Frank says:

    BRACKMAN!!

  60. pat says:

    BRRRRRRRACK

  61. Mike Axisa says:

    Andrew Brackman in the house.

  62. Hangoverologist says:

    Brack!

  63. Big Juan says:

    He is MASSIVE.

  64. Tank the Frank says:

    Woops.

  65. pat says:

    He knew that was gone.

  66. damn yanks says:

they gotta stop the interviews when the minor league guys of large interest are in the game

  67. YankeesJunkie says:

    That was a bomb.

  68. Hobs says:

    yikes.

  69. pat says:

Command is shaky, but that curve is nice.

    • fresh says:

agreed that curve looks good…positive sign because your obviously not gun have your best fastball early in camp and hes in the 92 range soo he shuld be sitting 94 95 in april. only thing left is control and command because he needs both.

  70. Hangoverologist says:

His control is out of whack. That’s like the tenth pitch that’s gone high and in. Hopefully he’ll be able to correct that this year or next.

  71. Mike Pop says:

How fast can Brack get his fastball?

  72. Arman Tamzarian says:

It’s exciting seeing Brackman pitch for the first time, I wish they would keep the camera on the field and not Cashman

  73. pat says:

NO FUCKING WAY, HE WENT AROUND ON THAT

  74. YankeesJunkie says:

The FB is so good that people swing when it is right at them.

  75. coolerking says:

He’s throwing 91-92 mph fastball. That’s not promising. Then again, it is spring.

  76. Hobs says:

92-93 mph coming in on a sick downward plane when he keeps it down in the zone.

  77. Hobs says:

What was that last pitch…the 2-1…came it at 90 but had a lot of drop to it.

  78. Hobs says:

    5 ground balls….one bomb.

  79. YankeesJunkie says:

Brackman looked pretty good for a first outing. He seems like he could get it up to 95 or so when he is on, nice curveball and considering he facing batters at a much higher level it was a good performance. Hopefully, he will be able to pitch well in Tampa and just get better throughout the year.

  80. Alex S says:

    ray looks like burnett

  81. pat says:

Russo is a pretty good hitter. Too bad he doesn’t really have a position.

    • YankeesJunkie says:

If Ramiro doesn’t hit Russo could easily take his place whether it is in the spring or later on. However, I think the Yankees really like how Ramrio is really slick defender.

  82. YankeesJunkie says:

    Time for another comeback.

  83. YankeesJunkie says:

    Game and season over.

  84. Tank the Frank says:

Can your OBP be lower than your AVG?

  85. bexarama says:

Can I ask a stupid question? Why are the Yankees not having that many hits compared to the other teams we play? Is it mostly an approach thing? Should I PANIC!!!! yet?

    • Hobs says:

      Fire Kevin Long!

      • bexarama says:

I saw someone saying Kevin Long should be fired because Curtis Granderson, in the first time he was up this season against a Pirates lefty, didn’t get a hit.

I am serious. It was on Twitter. I wish I’d saved it.

    • Jose says:

You shouldn’t panic by any means. If they lose the rest of the games they play in this Spring I won’t. Stay calm and remember during the season the hits will be there. I guarantee this offense will be potent.

    • Riddering says:

      No, you should not panic.

It is all about the approach. You think our Goddamn Yankees give a crap about exerting themselves in spring? Hell no. But those shitheads on other teams, they are killing themselves to put up any runs they can against the World @#$%ing Champions.

      /Frank Miller’d

  86. Arman Tamzarian says:

    Fat Sanchez sighting!!!

  87. Romulo: ROM-you-low or Rom-YOU-low?

  88. Riddering says:

I missed most of the game but getting home in time for a Cashman interview and Brackman on the mound ain’t too shabby.

I loved Cash’s reaction to Curry asking him if Brackman could contribute to the big leagues this year. You could see the “hell no” in his eyes.

  89. Bases loaded with no outs and they didn’t score?!?!?!?!

ZOMG the offense sucks everybody PANIC!!!!11

  90. bexarama says:

yessss I really wanted my mom to come home just in time to see a bunch of minor leaguers not get someone home with the bases loaded and nobody out and complain about it

  91. Hangoverologist says:

We have a losing record! Oh noez!

    /ledge jumpers’d

  92. Hey guys, missed the game. How did the pitchers and Romine, Montero look?

  93. Rick says:

Not one “Boo…ne” during the Star Spangled banner. Why do people have to make things up? and without any evidence to support what they say? Just a pause when the planes flew over otherwise a lot better some some of the people who sing it with tons of vocal gymnastics.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....re=related

Why is everyone so negative. geesh. Give the guys a chance, it’s a new season that hasn’t even started yet. Whatever happened to positive support?
