I just got here. Has anyone complained yet that the umpire didn’t warn both benches after the 2nd HBP?
someone did. IMO none of the HBPs were intentional and I think the umpires know that. Things were ugly after Hunter crashed into Teixeira but they’ve calmed down now.

I kind of expected that. Never did I feel comfortable in that game or feel that we just “gave it away” like this game. I felt like at times in this game the Angels just got tremendous breaks and the Yankees would hit shit luck, plus the weird managerial moves. I hate the Anaheim stadium more than Fenway though.

Eh, I really don’t think the BA is important for the #2 hitter. It’s about OBP. For Teix at #3, yeah, that hurts. Still, we need to keep in mind that our 3-7 hitters are all fairly interchangable. Most of them would hit 3rd-5th in any other lineup, so we can absorb those struggles other teams wouldn’t be able to handle.
I think Tex looks lost at the plate. He has found a few mistakes and turned on them but otherwise, he looks like he has no idea what is coming – hope it is just April for him.
Johnson, not so concerned with. He will even out.

Of course it’s annoying. But I remember what Teix did last year and I know what Johnson can do, so unless they’re still struggling like this and taking pitches like those in another month, I’m just not going to get too worked up about it.

Nick Johnson has a .167 BABIP, so yeah- talk to us in another 40 games and when his OBP isnt ~.380

His >.400 OBP is SO annoying, you’re right. I wish he put more balls in play and made more outs. Why are so you so good at baseball Nick Johnson? WHY?
If we end up getting swept or losing two of three, the good thing would be that we’d be going against non-contenders in Baltimore and Chicago. Two sweeps or winning 4 of six would be great.
That was just an absolutely terrible job by Girardi. There is nothing special about the 8th inning but Joe just basically said tonight Joba is TEH 8th inning closer. The direction bullpen management is going in today’s game is truly troubling.
Nothing about bringing in Joba there made sense. First, Robertson was throwing the ball great and had thrown only 6 pitches. But, since it is the magical 8th inning apparently Robertson can’t go back out there.
Ok, Joe you do not want to bring D-Rob back out. You have a guy in your pen who is historically great against LH and Matsui up at the plate. Then you have Kendry Morales on deck whose SLG last year was 115 points higher against RHP. Not only that, but he is 4-6 with a HR in his career against Joba. It may be a small sample, but when you have 4 hits in 6 at bats against a guy there is reason to be concerned.
And Joe just said the 8th inning is Joba’s “role.” Ridiculous.
I agree it was a bad job by Girardi with the bullpen management tonight, but Matsui crushes lefties. I would have just kept D-Rob out there. The mystical, magical 8th inning thing is so stupid, especially with someone as infuriatingly inconsistent as Joba has been.
I would have stayed with Robertson as well. Was just saying if you were going to make a change Marte made much more sense especially with Morales on deck. Also, Matsui hits lefties the same as righties, so it is not like he is better against lefies.
It is just mind boggling that a guy who threw 6 pitches and looked good doing it was yanked for “the 8th inning man.” The whole concept is just so ridiculous.
Yeah, I totally agree with everything here. I’m always nervous with Matsui against lefties, though. He is pretty even throughout his career (actually slightly worse against LHB), but last year his OPS was higher vs. LHB by nearly 150 points.
The idea of the eighth inning man needs to seriously die. Your last paragraph is really perfectly stated. Girardi is normally pretty good with the bullpen, but I don’t know why he’s in love with this idea.

It is even more confusing because Girardi is so obsessed with matchups at times.
“I lost with my best” will always be a more acceptable excuse than “I played by the numbers those crazy stats guys are always churning out.”

It’s basically as if they’re saying they expect Joba to be Mo’s heir. Personally I think Robertson should get a crack at that.
