Game 2 Spillover Thread 2

Nick Johnson will walk his way into our hearts. Who needs hits anyway?

Categories : Game Threads

  1. Kind of glad to see K-Rob and not Joba.

    • +1

I’m sorry, but Joba looks fat and out of shape to me. And he has for most of the past year. Most players lose weight as the season progresses, he looked like he gained over the course of 2009.

  2. Dela G says:

  3. Souter Fell says:

    alright, auditions are open

  4. dkidd says:

    joba to the 1st!!!

  5. zzzzzz says:

    robertson. daddy likes.

    please don’t fail.

  6. Accent Shallow says:

Is there anything sweeter than seeing an opposing pitcher walk a run in?

  7. Hmmmmmm…..

Guess they didn’t like what they saw from Joba on Sunday.

  8. Drew says:

    “This is telling.”

No, it’s not. It’s the second game of the season. We don’t have an 8th inning guy yet. Everyone will get more than one shot. Ass.

  9. Vinny the Bull says:

Maybe they figure Joba would hit Youk. You know. Like always.

  10. JobaWockeeZ says:

Fuck these YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU chants. It’s close enough to a boo so use that instead.

  11. Dammit, I hate when the thread spills over as I am typing in a comment.

  12. BigBlueAL says:

Second guessing not letting Ace start the 8th??

  13. Let’s fuckin’ go, D-Rob. Bear down here, kid. Show us that future closer in you.

  14. bexarama says:

    just. use. d-rob.

  15. Yankee1010 says:

If Marte was going to face Ortiz, how was he not ready?

  16. JobaWockeeZ says:

    WTF one batter? Come on.

  17. Drew says:

Damaso coming in. This is telling!

  18. K-Rob for just one batter? Why not just leave in Aceves?

  19. Get used to THIS says:

No evidence no apologies and no regards…

  20. kmarx says:

Joba also threw 100 million pitches on sunday and robertson threw like 5.

  21. Souter Fell says:

thank you. we’ll be in touch. next.

  22. SSS alert:

Robertson has a .608 OPSA vs. LHB in 147 PAs.

  23. pat says:

DRobb ever gonna get a chance to do anything?

  24. AndrewYF says:

    I really hate matchup games.

Can we just remove all the lefties from the bullpen? I hate to say this, but the bullpen may need to be Girardi-proofed.

  25. DontChaKnow says:

I dont want to see Joba in a tight game right now. And I certainly dont want to see Jorge catching Marte either.

  26. Vinny the Bull says:

Steven Goldman is shouting “Coffee Joe!” at his television set.

  27. Accent Shallow says:

    Oh, gorgeous.

  28. Tank the Frank says:

How many mistakes are the Yankees planning on making in this series exactly?

  29. V says:

Marte needs to go on the DL, like, last week.

d00d. Learn to throw the fucking ball.

  30. What the heck was that?

  31. What in the FUCK are you doing, Marte? It’s Kevin Fucking Youkilis. He isn’t going to steal!

  32. kmarx says:

At least this time it will take 3 wild pitches for Youk to score.

  33. bexarama says:

    aughghhghhghhg. C’mon Marte.

  34. Vinny the Bull says:

  35. Cy Farnsworth says:

you’ve gotta be fucking kidding me

why are they trying to hold youkilis on in the first place? where is he gonna go???

  36. JobaWockeeZ says:

…Just get 2 outs. Then Mo. 2 outs.

  37. BigBlueAL says:

    I fuckin hate Mrte again.

  38. Yankee1010 says:

Awesome. This is looking good. Damaso is having trouble pretty much hitting any target.

Way to keep Youkilis close. Lord knows he’s a huge threat on the bases.

  39. Drew says:

    Marte’s wasted?

  40. poster says:

In the context of the game, that was a HUGE mistake.

Tex is not playing a very clean defensive game, is he?

  41. cjc says:

    this sloopy pla is disgraceful

  42. Souter Fell says:

    jeezus, such sloppy baseball

  43. Zooboy says:

Can they keep Marte under wraps until October?

  44. Omar says:

Hate the move. Don’t want to see Chamberlain blow the game after Marte leaves…and Marte does something dumb.

    Fuck this shit.

  45. JeffB says:

    Chuck Knoblock throw to first.

  46. Jake H says:

Marte thanks for the WS ring but if you don’t start picking it up your going to be cut.

  47. JobaWockeeZ says:

Okay fuck it. Cash make an early visit this year. This is more sloppy then an Ortiz AB.

  48. JobaWockeeZ says:

    STANDING OVATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  49. I guess the Sox noted Grandy’s arm.

  50. pete says:

marte needs to pitch in games. all that needs to be said. It’s game 2 guys.

  51. V says:

    Speeding up the games FTW.

  52. Vinny the Bull says:

Did Kay just say that Marte did his job? I do believe that the runner still advanced.

  53. Souter Fell says:

  54. Geez, Joba looks fucking fat.

  55. My fingernails don’t like this pitching change.

  56. Omar says:

    Here comes the loss…goddamnit.

  57. Accent Shallow says:

Joba against Drew and Cameron? Oy.

At least that plays to his strengths — Drew has had trouble with him in the past, and Cameron is a high-K hitter.

  58. DontChaKnow says:

I dont have a good feeling on Joba. D-Rob could have taken care of Ortiz and then faced Beltre.

  59. bexarama says:

    okay, Joba. Please be good.

  60. Tank the Frank says:

Prediction: Joba does not throw a fastball on the fat part of the plate to Beltre.

    Cuz that would be smart.

  61. Cy Farnsworth says:

at this rate we’ll get joba, chop, mitre, mo and hughes for one out each (he’s a relief pitchaaahhh!!!)

  62. yankees=warriors says:

God, are we going to go through this 3-pitchers-an-inning thing every time there’s a left-handed batter sandwiched between 2 right handers?

  63. No 3-2 sliders, Joba. No 3-2 sliders.

  64. BigBlueAL says:

Bring in Mo!!!! Just kidding I know its only the 2nd game of the season. Well lets see if Joba is up to this, nice early test for him.

  65. AndrewYF says:

I really want to know why Joe brought in Robertson for one freaking guy.

Is that a waste of resources or what?

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Following the lead from the FO.

      I keed, I keed.

    • Drew says:

He came into get an out. He failed. Get over it.

      • AndrewYF says:

        The point

        Your head

        • Drew says:

          Nah, it really didn’t.

If you’ve payed attention to Joe over the past couple years, you’d know how he manages the game. Whether it’s right or wrong, whether you agree with it or not, it’s how he plays it.

In a matchup situation, if he asks you to get an out, and you don’t, he’ll probably pull you. We’ve seen it many times. We’ll see it many more.
          Get over it.

    • Relax.

He’s doing what he did last year: trying people out to see what he’s got and who he can trust. As much as it’s killing us to watch, this is a process that needs to occur, and these games are as close to meaningless as regular season games get.

In spite of the fact that we can’t stand it when we lose to Boston, Joe’s keeping his eyes on the prize.

      • pete says:

that. moreover, it goes beyond “trying people out”. Quite simply, Marte HAS TO PITCH to become the dominant lefty reliever he can be. Which we want him to be, because that makes our bullpen, and therefore our team, better. Same goes for Joba. Other than Aceves, who needs as much practice going multiple innings as the other relievers do getting 1/2/3 batters out, everyone just needs to pitch in a bunch of games right away and get into a routine. It might cost us a game here and there early on, but that’s how you turn middle relievers into effective weapons.

      • AndrewYF says:

That’s not the point. I didn’t talk about Marte. I was talking about using your resources in a smart manner. Using one of your best arms in a close game for one out is not using your resources in a smart manner.

Joe is a good long-term bullpen manager. He could use some work on his in-game tactics.

    • Are we all feeling better now?

      Play nice, boys. :-)

  66. Accent Shallow says:

Odds Joba hits Youkilis with a pickoff throw?

  67. Souter Fell says:

    please joba pretty please

  68. Drew says:

LOL at that 2nd pitch being called a ball.

  69. Nigel Bangs says:

  70. Nice. I like this Joba.

  71. Souter Fell says:

    one more, bulldog, one more

  72. JobaWockeeZ says:

I don’t want to hear a status update on velocity on Joba’s EVERY PITCH.

  73. larryf says:

Joba shakes off Jorge for the K!!!!

  74. BigBlueAL says:

Shit, MLBN had that fastball to K Beltre at 96 mph.

  75. Well that calmed me down a bit. Thanks for expanding the zone, Adrian.

  76. Cecala says:

    *grunt and fart*

  77. Swisher's fauxhawk says:

    Nice Joba. 96.

  78. poster says:

  79. hawkins44 says:

He’s a reliever…. funny how he’s back up to 96….. which in reality is probably 93-94.

  80. BigBlueAL says:

Nothing is wrong with Joba’s velocity tonight I’ll say that much. Looking filthy so far.

  81. Jake H says:

    That was a nasty slider.

  82. Vinny the Bull says:

    /fist pump’d

  83. Nigel Bangs says:

  84. Drew says:

  85. bexarama says:

oh thank you Joba THANK YOU

  86. Accent Shallow says:

Drew simply cannot deal with the slider. I’m ok with it.

  87. Jairus says:

    Game over??

  88. hawkins44 says:

  89. Hughesus Christo says:

What the hell don’t these guys understand about pitchers gaining velocity out of the bullpen?

  90. Souter Fell says:

    hey, i remember this guy!

  91. BigBlueAL says:

    Its 2007 all over again!!!!!

  92. larryf says:

2-1 slider-lookin’ good Joba and he takes something off the 2-2. Awesome. Mo time!!!!

  93. emills says:

    Fist pump!!!! FTW

  94. Thank God my predictions are terrible. Thank you, Joba.

  95. Fist pump! Very nice.

  96. Accent Shallow says:

Same pitch, same location, same result.

  97. JobaWockeeZ says:

Don’t fucking fistpump. More fuel to the B-Jobbers.

Yet it pisses off Sox fans. Meh.

  98. JobaTheHeat62 says:

finally Joba looks like a major league pitcher for once…His slider was nasty

  99. Yankee1010 says:

See, that there fist pumping and farting clearly demonstrates the bullpen is where he belongs.

  100. zzzzzz says:

not gonna lie, i just giggled.

  101. pete says:

Poor JD Drew. Imagine hitting amidst all of that grunting and farting.

  102. That was reminiscent of 07. Fastballs down in the zone, high 80′s sliders up with the bottom dropping out.

    • 94-95 with the fastball as well. Not 99, but to be honest he doesn’t need to throw that hard and I’m not sure they want him to. Some doctors think guys that throw that hard are just doing damage to their shoulders.

      • Accent Shallow says:

This year, I’m going to try and avoid gun-watching until June, at least, until the pitchers build up strength.

  103. Nigel Bangs says:

happy hour’s from 5-infinity brah. hang loose.

  104. Meat Loaf says:

Hello, B-Jobbers coming to post on how they were right all along.

    (Ready for the onslaught)

  105. Omar says:

Wow…that was nuts, I saw a couple of 95s there on Gameday and on the NESN gun.

  106. Will says:

That’s the Joba I think we all want to see…bullpen or rotation.

  107. Dela G says:

Hey JMK at the overshare of deez nutz, i haven’t been around much because i have been studying for the CPA exam. I will be back in business when i finish the last test (audit) on may 5th

    i’ll bring the bayonets

  108. larryf says:

Very positive Joba-changing speeds for strikes-best part about this game so far…

  109. Nigel Bangs says:

it’s funny to think of joba like pigpen from peanuts. just a cloud of farts of grunts surrounding him at all times.

  110. Vinny the Bull says:

If we get an A-Bomb here, gamesetmatch.

  111. bexarama says:

if anyone cares Tampa Bay walked off against Baltimore and won 4-3.

  112. Souter Fell says:

show me ’07 ARod now too and I’ll be a happy man

  113. O says:

    attaboy Joba!!….calling an A-bomb….

  114. Yankee1010 says:

Jesus, Kay, we did see that from Joba as a starter in 2008. And in spurts last year. Talk about confirmation bias …

  115. AndrewYF says:

Holding back so you can last longer.

    I know how that is.

  116. bexarama says:

goddammit JD Drew stop being good at baseball

  117. JobaWockeeZ says:

Drew and his damn +10 UZR.

  118. ShuutoHeat says:

    Mythological analogies…

    Arod = Centaur
    Joba = Minotaur?

    Pedroia = Pixie

  119. O says:

  120. Vinny the Bull says:

Damn Fenway. That’s a homerun in New York.

  121. I don’t care if JD Drew is on my fantasy team, watching that fist pump by Joba was beyond awesome.

  122. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Don’t you know!!

  123. Vinny the Bull says:

    Doncha know!!

  124. Drew says:

    Woot. Cano motherfuckers!!

  125. Accent Shallow says:

    <3 Robbie <3

    Gotta give Mo that cushion.

  126. JeffB says:

    Cano, clutchiness?

  127. larryf says:

    Don’t ya know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  128. Robbie!

    Insurance runs FTW!

  129. Souter Fell says:

Robbie, gotta love those no RISP AB’s

  130. B-Rando says:

Anyone else here forced to watch the yanks game on NESN?? You do not know painful game calling until you’ve watched a yankee game on NESN.

  131. Ugh, I hate seeing Robbie swing at those pitches in the dirt.

AND THEN…he makes me look stupid with that blast!

  132. Even with nobody on he’s batting them in! Go Ribbie!

  133. Jake H says:

Cano doesn’t need men on base to get an RBI

  134. kunaldo says:

lazy bastard, he just wanted to jog around the bases.

  135. O says:

    doncha know!!!!!

  136. poster says:

Lazy Dominican asshole, hitting home runs so that he doesn’t need to use energy running the bases.

  137. Hughesus Christo says:

Robbie is going 30/120 this year

  138. bexarama says:

    oh Robinson you beautiful creature

  139. JeffB says:

    A Cano-doubter.

  140. I think this going to be a monster year by Cano, he’s even taking pitches now too!

  141. AndrewYF says:

So I guess those years of slow starts for Cano are over, huh? That was just crushed.

  142. J.D. says:

I guess Jeter has started going to Mo’s barber.

  143. Drew says:

I love the was Cano drops the bat after he hits one hard.

  144. ecksodia says:

Definitely my second favorite Yankee. After that bum A-Rod.

  145. Omar says:

Where’d the Joba farting on the mound meme come from?

  146. I’m still a bit shocked they have this pseudo-Japanese guy in after giving up a lot of hard contact.

  147. Tom Zig says:

I love it when Cano knows right away that he hit it out. He drops the bat, watches it, and has a shit eating grin as he rounds the bases

  148. DontChaKnow says:

Oh sure he can hit them out when nobody’s on, but where’s his clutchiness. I mean clearly he’s not clutch if he’s only hitting a home run in a one run ball game in the bottom of the 8th.

  149. Vinny the Bull says:

    “LOOK OUT, Nick!”

  150. Rogue Trader says:

  151. Nigel Bangs says:

  152. Yankee1010 says:

That would have hit a RH batter.

  153. Souter Fell says:

alright, it’s mo time, it’s been too long

  154. Jake H says:

    That is a terrible call.

  155. That was not a strike.

  156. Drew says:

Angel Hernandez needs a good shanking.

  157. Patrick says:

I forgot what an insurance run looked like.

  158. Vinny the Bull says:

Umps want to go home. I want to go to bed. Thank Mo it’s time for Mo.

  159. AJ says:

If anyone wants to laugh at the Boston fans…there’s always this clip..I want pizza..:

  160. Sleep with one eye open/Gripping your pillow tight

  161. bexarama says:

dude 6 closers blew games, 1 took a loss in a tied game, and the other was Mo.

  162. ecksodia says:

    First pitch strike. Of course.

  163. yankees=warriors says:

    Go Mo!

  164. bexarama says:

    zomg is he spitting?!?!?!?

  165. Drew says:

How many times has Winn played in Fenway? The, again, I guess he may as well get used to it now.

  166. BigBlueAL says:

Damn, Costas just said that Mo, Jeter and Posada are the first pair of teammates in North American team sports (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL) to play together for 16 straight seasons.

  167. O says:

    1 down for Mo!

  168. ecksodia says:

The man does not waste time.

  169. bexarama says:

how in the world was that not a strike

  170. Yankee1010 says:

That was a ball to Scutaro, but Swisher’s was a strike?

  171. JobaWockeeZ says:

Where the fuck is this call for the Yankees.

    Screw inconsistent AND wrong umpires.

  172. Drew says:

Okay, maybe the shanking should hurt him.

  173. dkidd says:

    angel hernandez is a joke

  174. Yankee1010 says:

Nice to see Atchison getting the big zone but the newcomer Rivera getting squeezed multiple times.

  175. BigBlueAL says:

Soooooo, where is the range from Gardner there????

  176. Accent Shallow says:

Meh, Ellsbury and Pedroia? Not worried.

  177. JobaWockeeZ says:

Should have been out but hey. Can’t go against Boston ever.

  178. Jake H says:

Gardner should have had that. He hasn’t played left enough.

  179. bexarama says:

    feck. C’mon Mo.

  180. Drew says:

One hop to the wall? Someone probably should’ve got that.

  181. O says:

i hate all the idiots that sit behind home plate!!! That wave at the camera!!!

  182. AndrewYF says:

I hate Marco Scutaro for what he does to Mo.

Also the home plate umpire, because he’s been terrible tonight.

  183. Vinny the Bull says:

    Still hate Fenway.

  184. bexarama says:

    ugliest shot of Youk ever

  185. Souter Fell says:

    show the kid who’s boss

  186. Nigel Bangs says:

well, i’m glad to get that call, angel.

  187. THANK YOU! I was worried that might be called a ball for a split second.

  188. Holy shnikes that pitch was nasty.

  189. JobaWockeeZ says:

Eww overreacting Red Sox fans FTL.

  190. Tomorrow’s headline in the Philadelphia newspapers?

  191. JobaWockeeZ says:

    NO 0-8!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  192. The quest for 161-1 is still intact, thank Mo.

  193. O says:

    2 down for Mo!!!

  194. DontChaKnow says:

“When he decides to go in the backdoor they just stand there and take it.”

    I love Ken Singelton

  195. Accent Shallow says:

    Gotta love Mo.

  196. dkidd says:

    sound advice from kenny:

when mariano decides to come in the back door, just stand there and take it

  197. Jake H says:

3 errors should mean you lose but the Yanks won. The season is saved!!!!

  198. Back to .500, baby.

Tomorrow they go over for good.

  199. pat says:

  200. bexarama says:

    I just fistpumped all Joba-esque. :D

  201. Drew says:

Somehow we overcame Jorge’s inadequacies and won! Woohooo

    Win #1.

  202. larryf says:

and now for the probing post-game questions from our crack staff at Yes

  203. Yankee1010 says:

Damn, how is the MSM going to turn this into a negative?

  204. yankees=warriors says:

Nice! Good job by Mo, but I think today’s biggest star is Ace.

  205. Mike Z says:

    Thank Mo for Mo!

  206. O says:

    Mo the gigante!!!…good guys win!!!!!

  207. Omar says:

Alright, who was the asshole who called me a Red Sox fan…they won I’m here, come get some.

  208. A sloppy but exciting game. A win is a win. And hey, the bullpen was really good today.

  209. BigBlueAL says:

    Mo is still GOD.

  210. Nigel Bangs says:

    posada future manager?

  211. CTyankee says:

He look good to me outta da bullpen

  212. Accent Shallow says:

Yay Mo! Yay first win of the year!

  213. bexarama says:

did Aceves get the vulture win already? luls

  214. ecksodia says:

Finally, all is right with the world again.

  215. Damn, you guys buried my post, so here it is again:

Tomorrow’s headline in the Philadelphia newspapers?

  216. BigBlueAL says:

Tonight the Yankees beat the Red Sox and the Knicks beat the Celtics. Screw you Boston!!!!

  217. dkidd says:

nj with the awesome triple slash .000/.500/.000

  218. MikeD says:

When I see Joba hit 100 on the radar gun, then I’ll believe he’s back. Now he’s still the Joba of last year, throwing 93 as a starter and 96 as a reliever. That’s what we saw tonight. The Joba of 2007 and 2008 pre-DL is still a memory.

  219. EB says:

Nice to see Mo operating at 91-93. Good sign for him. IIRC he was 89-92 late in 09.

  220. I am here to announce that in light of Marcus Thames being an atrocious excuse for a baseball player, I actually like Brett Gardner now.

I would, however, prefer that he not uppercut everything since he, you know, has the power of my deceased hunchback Grandmother.

  221. bexarama says:

updates from around baseball if anyone cares:
    Rays walked off against Orioles
The Astros have a bad offense.

  222. Nigel Bangs says:

    joba joba joba. goodness gracious.

  223. Brian says:

The funniest thing is reading these comments after the game. No matter how smart you guys are, you always fail to remember that baseball season is 162 games. Most of you guys were ready to cut Marte and were talking like Joba was the worst pitcher in history. Let the season play out. And there’s no reason why Joba is not your 8th inning guy. DRob is good, but he’s no Joba…and ACE IS THE MAN.

  224. Omar says:

Even though Burnett’s results weren’t pretty, 5 IP 1 BB, 5Ks, he had a 3/2 G/F IIRC, and really only got beat by Victor Martinez. Not an awful start all things considered, something to build on for sure.

  225. Accent Shallow says:

Things I didn’t realize: JD Drew is a right-handed thrower.

With his athleticism, I’m surprised he didn’t wind up at 3B or even SS.

  226. Girardi was saying AJ was great. He missed a pitch to Martinez but he was ahead of the hitters…he pitched really well.

He didn’t pitch terribly, but he wasn’t great shakes out there. Mediocre is the best word for it.

  227. Gee, where’s Rhode Island Sawx Fan tonight?

    Not here? what a surprise.

  228. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Anyone play beat the streak? I picked Chone Figgins to get a hit tonight, so I’m watching some of the Mariners-A’s game, and damn Braden is pitching really well.

  229. Earlier today, I predicted AJ’s outing:

    Over/under 5 IP for AJ? I think goes six, 2 BBs, 6 H, 5 Ks.

I was close on everything, as I was off by one on everything except the Ks.
