Game 5: Turning over the rotation

By

The off-days have been frustrating for us, but they’re a boon for the pitching staff. Because the team didn’t play Monday and Thursday, they can skip the No. 5 starter and head right back to the top of the rotation. Heck, CC’s even getting extra rest here, five days instead of the regular four.

Meanwhile, the fifth starter, Phil Hughes, pitched in his final extended spring training outing today. I’ll spare you the stats, but everyone seems pleased enough with his performance. He’ll pitch Thursday in the series finale vs. the Angels.

Rookie Wade Davis takes the hill for the Rays. The 24-year-old will make his seventh career start. His sixth career start, incidentally, was also against the Yankees. He pitched five innings on the season’s final day, allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out five. All three came on A-Rod‘s first home run of the inning. He then allowed two more batters to reach, both of whom scored. It was on an error, though, so he wasn’t charged. This, I think, helps illustrated the absurdity of the earned run.

Posada predictably sits on a day game after a night game. Swisher leapfrogs Granderson into the No. 6 spot, and everything else looks pretty much the same. The Rays have a bit of a different look, playing Zobrist at second and Gabe Kapler in right field against the lefty Sabathia.

Lineup:

1. Derek Jeter, SS
2. Nick Johnson, DH
3. Mark Teixeira, 1B
4. Alex Rodriguez, 3B
5. Robinson Cano, 2B
6. Nick Swisher, RF
7. Curtis Granderson, CF
8. Brett Gardner, LF
9. Francisco Cervelli, C

And on the mound, number fifty-two, CC Sabathia.

  1. Salty Buggah says:

Anyone see This Week In Baseball today? It was an episode about the Yankees so it was nice.

  2. bexarama says:

things I never wanted to see: Dustin Pedroia without a shirt

  3. JobaWockeeZ says:

Papelbon and Lackey have the most annoying voices. Fitting really.

  4. Salty Buggah says:

As exciting as it is to see CC today, I kinda wanted to see Hughes against Davis. That would’ve been a good matchup.

But being a spoiled fan, I shouldn’t really complain. Hope CC can rebound today. If he doesn’t, oh well. He’ll switch into beast mode soon enough.

  5. bexarama says:

oh how I missed Ford Keys to the Game

Yankees: stop the Rays’ best players
    Rays: beat CC Sabathia

    Awesome.

  6. Alex S says:

    CHOP is enjoying the view

  7. Bill R says:

Arod 1 hit away from 1000 hits with the yanks

  8. YankeesJunkie says:

Well lets see the Yankees get back on track today.

  9. JobaWockeeZ says:

A Matsui/Damon mention without a mention of clutchness. Color me impressed Buck.

    • whozat says:

It’s cool. McCarver whined about Johnson working the count because (apparently) DHes are supposed to be hackers like Vlad.

  10. bexarama says:

    Poor Teixeira. :(

    • YankeesJunkie says:

His numbers will come, they always come.

      • bexarama says:

Oh I know. I’m not worried at all. I just feel bad for the guy (well not really, he’s getting paid like a mrajillion dollars, but you know what I mean). I also think last year he looked a LOT more helpless at the plate in April, but he’s still not getting results. Who knows why.

      • BABIP hates Tex early in the season. He smoked that one, but right to Zobrist.

  11. Salty Buggah says:

    Oh well, Tex. Shift happens

  12. Tex is inching closer to the Yankee record for most hitless ABs to start a season.

  13. AJ says:

If anyone gets tired of Joe Buck, Fox Sports en Espanol actually does a great job covering the Yankee games. If you can understand them.

And the new graphics on YES have surpassed Fox, awesome.

  14. cjc says:

so who had 3:26 in the payroll discusion pool? God I hate FOX games

  15. Good thing ZZ is settling in.

  16. bexarama says:

Everything is so weirdly loud in the Trop. Like, the boos from earlier, and then the explosion of cheers when A-Rod hit the ball.

  17. Apparently you can email Buck and McCarver. I’d laugh if they let some spam through.

  18. pete says:

god i’m sick of not having a tv

  19. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

When’s the last time you saw Cano swing and miss at 3 pitches?

  20. Tom Zig says:

Getting caught stealing and then chasing a ball to strikeout. Nice guys.

  21. Salty Buggah says:

Ugh. Bad jump and Robbie chased. But I like what I’m seeing from Cano. He’s definitely has been more disciplined thus far.

  22. Will in NJ says:

It’s almost scary how good this rays rotation can be when hellickson is mlb ready.

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

This. And they’re all fairly young too. It’s crazy.

    • Beef Hammerdong says:

It’s almost scary how good this rays rotation bullpen can be when hellickson is mlb ready with hellickson in the 7th inning role, davis in the 8th inning role, and price as their closer.

      i fixteded it

      • Beef Hammerdong says:

Apparently, you can preview tags just fine. But if you try to post them you end up looking like a retard.

        So…

It’s almost scary how good this rays rotation bullpen can be when hellickson is mlb ready with hellickson in the 7th inning role, davis in the 8th inning role, and price as their closer.

        And reply fail is complete.

  23. bexarama says:

I miss the YES pitch counter

  24. It might just be me but whether or not the Yankees are winning or losing, I still can’t enjoy the game as much because the stadium is so dark, dreary, ugly and depressing.

  25. Tom Zig says:

Arod has one hell of an arm. Wow.

  26. Salty Buggah says:

Oh Mo, please somehow give us a 0 UZR from A-Rod this year.

  27. bexarama says:

Granderson is bad against lefties?? I’d never heard this before.

  28. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

    Someone’s steling seconddddd

  29. Tom Zig says:

Cervelli doesn’t use batting gloves? Interrresssting

  30. McCarver can understand things? News to me.

  31. bexarama says:

that’s a funny image of Tex and A-Rod.

  32. Will in NJ says:

    thoughts on cervelli’s helmet?

  33. Poopy Pants says:

    Is McCarver blind?

  34. Fantastic at-bat by Cervelli.

  35. Salty Buggah says:

Awesome AB by F-Cerv. No DP Jeter

  36. bexarama says:

    aaarghhhhghgh

How does Jeter have a .316 average already? That seems wrong.

  37. pete says:

    Dear Derek:

    Stop.

    Love, Pete

  38. Reggie C. says:

Ugh. We had Davis on the ropes there.

  39. Souter Fell says:

jete’s, um can you lift something?

  40. cjc says:

    awesome jetes just awesome

  41. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

Jeter must want to speed up the game.

  42. Somewhere Joe West is smiling at that Jeter At-bat.

  43. Tom Zig says:

Jeter just made Joe West’s day

  44. Beef Hammerdong says:

    Jeets. =/

  45. ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

Derek Jeter sporting Wangesque 12.00 GO/FO ratio.

  46. Alex S says:

Is it just me or does Jimmy Clausen look like Jonathan Papelbon?

  47. CubanC says:

I don’t want to sound like I’m bashing Jeter but how many weak groundballs has Jeter hit to SS so far? I know he hits lots of balls on the ground and he hits into his share of DPs but is just seems like he’s bouncing an inordinate amount of balls to the left side?

    • whozat says:

      a) It’s not bashing to mention a flaw in a player’s game
      b) No player’s past makes him immune to valid criticism
      c) yes, it has seemed like that so far in this young season.

    • Klemy says:

But IF that was a product of him trying to protect Gardner’s fake steal, he had an excuse that time.

  48. 6 pitch inning. Holy efficiency Batman!!!!!

  49. bexarama says:

Not gonna happen, Michael. ‘Cuz it’s the Astros.

  50. Hummingbird S. says:

    Where’s the offense?

  51. Tom Zig says:

I’ve noticed the same thing. I haven’t seen every AB, so I wasn’t sure if my eyes were deceiving me.

(This will probably be a reply fail since I’m on my phone)

  52. Poopy Pants says:

    A-Don’t Ya Know!!

  53. Shdw says:

    Finally. Some runs

  54. chu hi says:

    cano!

  55. Souter Fell says:

Wow, robbie. Way to crush that one.

  56. Beef Hammerdong says:

Cano got that jacked up Bonds swagger.

  57. Zack says:

That’s right Robby, lazily job around the bases after your HR.

  58. Salty Buggah says:

I Heart Robbie Cano (someone get me a t-shirt)

  59. camilo Gerardo says:

Love his HR trot, LOVE IT!!

  60. Tom Zig says:

Wow Cano just hit that a mile.

  61. Poopy Pants says:

Wade Davis should be moved to the ‘pen. He gave up some runs.

  62. Klemy says:

He’s lazy. Just didn’t want to run around the bases.

  63. AJ says:

Does John Sterling really say “something sort of grandish” when Granderson hits a homerun?…I feel he’s not taking advantage of the opportunities. And it’s horrible. What about…

Ohhh isn’t he grand….A Curtain Call by Curtis!…A shot courtesy of curtis….etc.

  64. Who says Cano is unclutch?

  65. If Posada were catching this game we’d be losing 27-2!!

    /NY Media’d

  66. pete says:

Cano hit with good baseball player hitter no walks

  67. Poopy Pants says:

I said it in the other thread. Melky looks like Big Papi now.

  68. Reggie C. says:

Well done Swish. Davis up to 21 pitches this inning.

  69. Salty Buggah says:

2nd time through the order, this lineup is ridiculous, not that it’s bad the 1st time around.

  70. Spaceman.Spiff says:

    RBInson Cano, awesome player.

  71. AJ says:

If you think the stadium is bad, wait till you visit the neighborhood AROUND the stadium. Uy…

  72. AJ says:

Between Wade Davis and Jeff Niemann, who has the better year for the Rays? I’m having a debate with a friend.

  73. whozat says:

    Cervelli fired up

  74. Dela G says:

    ZZ is on fiya!

  75. chu hi says:

    see see.

  76. camilo Gerardo says:

I think CC has a new personal catcher.. Oh noes!!!

  77. pete says:

Sathia pitch hard fastbals change get effectige

  78. Dela G says:

    grit gutner!!

  79. mustang says:

so guys what’s going on ?

  80. Not The Rays says:

    GGBG FTW!

  81. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

    Someone’s stealing seconddddd

  82. Dela G says:

    great bunt by cervelli

  83. bexarama says:

Evan Longoria is so so so good.

  84. If Cervelli homers we will have a full blown Catcher controversy on our hands.

  85. Dela G says:

    el capitan!

  86. Reggie C. says:

That’s too bad for Cerv. Placed the bunt well. Cerv has wheels though. I wonder if he’s faster than Swisher.

  87. AJ says:

Ha Gardner was already sitting on the bench eating sunflower seeds with A-Rod when the throw came in.

  88. chu hi says:

    nice series of at bats.

  89. dkidd says:

by the time that throw reached the cutoff man, gardner was sitting in the dugout having a gatorade

  90. Tom Zig says:

When CC is on his game, you don’t need much in terms of offense. So if a personal catcher helps him, so be it. I’m not usually a fan of personal catchers.

(Sorry if this is a reply fail, I’m on my phone, I clicked reply, I swear!)

    • whozat says:

It is patently absurd to even be bringing this up right now. Posada caught CC all last season, all through the post-season, and he was DOMINANT.

  91. bexarama says:

are Jeter’s pants really tight today or is it just me? This question makes me sound like a very very shallow baseball fan.

  92. Dela G says:

    JETER!!!

    hooray tex!

  93. Alex S says:

    BIG TEXY!

  94. danny says:

    woooo teix!

  95. mustang says:

    YESSSSSSS

    TEX !!

    JETER !!!

  96. Hummingbird S. says:

    About freaking time Tex!

  97. Andy in Sunny Daytona says:

    Slump. Over.

  98. Ghost of Scott Brosius says:

First to home has gotta be the most exciting play in baseball

  99. He gave that ball a rough Teix massage.

    UCWIDT?

I’ve started drinking. It’s going to be a long game, messagebaorders.

  100. Tex! Good way to break an 0-18 streak!

  101. Souter Fell says:

wow, i thought jetes was dead to rights

  102. Alex S says:

woah anyone notice Tex’s eyes? it looks like he hasn’t slept for days

  103. JobaWockeeZ says:

No Kay. He’s not around to mention something that pisses a lot of people off.

The people would really hate Kay if it happened today.

  104. Reggie C. says:

    Wtf. Longoria totally went.

  105. poster says:

    Damn, CC looks really sharp.

  106. Did they change the check swing rules this season? I don’t think the Yankees have gotten one call since the Opener.

  107. poster says:

    Awww, perfect game over.

  108. bexarama says:

Blah blah horse, blah blah. (I love you CC.)

  109. Those horns and cowbells are super annoying. How could anyone stand that?

  110. YankeesJunkie says:

CC obviously looking much sharper today than he did in Boston.

  111. dkidd says:

    cervelli’s gonna get plunked

  112. Mike Axisa says:

Bush league fist pump by Cervelli. Act like you’ve been there before, kid.

  113. Souter Fell says:

    damn he looks good

  114. danny says:

    sit downnn!

  115. YankeesJunkie says:

I did not realize he had a not hitter this long considering he threw 38 pitches the first two innings. Still that is pretty impressive lets see if he can’t go 12 more outs without a hit.

  116. Joe D. says:

CC rockin’ the no-hitter through five. Nice.

    • Beef Hammerdong says:

Here’s to hoping he rocks a no scorer til the end.

      • Joe D. says:

I hope not. He’s at 70 pitches through 5…nice, but not terribly efficient. At that pace he’d be at 126 through nine.

If he maintains the pace, I’d rather him just give up a hit and make it easy for JoeG to get some coffee.

    • poster says:

      YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH

OH SHIT NOW WE’VE JINXED IT OH SHIT OH SHIT

  117. whozat says:

Tim McCarver: “I get angry when I don’t understand things.”

  118. bexarama says:

There are too many fans of both teams at the Trop. Any time anything happens people are like YEAAAH WOOOOOO and it’s loud.

    /old cranky person’d

  119. Spaceman.Spiff says:

    Come on Spider-Swish.

  120. I hate McCarver. He says that pitchers can get hurt by throwing less pitches. Fucking idiot.

    • Arman Tamzarian says:

Does he understand the logic in that? I’m not one to join in the bitching about announcers, but that’s ridiculous

  121. whozat says:

No, Tim…YOU have never bothered to READ any data that indicates a correlation.

  122. Tom Zig says:

McCarver’s opinion on pitch counts is interesting

  123. YankeesJunkie says:

Yup, there is no correlation to pitches and innings and injuries. None at all.

  124. Tim McCarver talking about common sense. That’s rich.

  125. Dorian says:

    McCarver is an absolute Moron.

  126. bexarama says:

    Yessss more Joba talk

Oh dear God what the hell are they saying?!?!?

  127. Not The Rays says:

    OMG OMG BUCK STFU

  128. Dela G says:

good job grandy with the steal!

  129. danny says:

heres the part where they talk about how they were right all along with joba…

  130. Reggie C. says:

Very close play at second. Grandy did beat it out though.

  131. Will in NJ says:

McCarver fail. So throwing LESS pitches does more damage to an arm than throwing more pitchers. brilliant.

  132. Alex S says:

it wasn’t a failed experiment making Joba a starter. it was a successful experiment making him a reliever. He had been a starter his whole life.

  133. JobaTheHeat62 says:

    I love Granderson

  134. whozat says:

Tim: “Don’t get sucked into all this ‘pitch count’ nonsense!”

Robothal: “well, all teams are taking the workload issue very seriously”

Tim: “Sure, that’s just common sense”

    WHAT?!?!?!

  135. Dorian says:

My Goodness McCarver is on one helluva roll.

    1) There is no correlation between pitches thrown and injury

    2) The Joba Rules are the wrong rules

What will he do for an encore

  136. W.W.J.M.D. says:

Anyone else feel like Tim McCarver digs the stolen base?

  137. Andy_C_23 says:

As good as the Yankees were in the first half of this game, that’s how as bad they’ve been in the second half.

    /McCarverFamilyGuy’d

  138. poster says:

Damn…could Buck and Mccarver get any stupider?

I don’t even hate them like many people here but shit, they’re making themselves sound SO stupid.

  139. Arman Tamzarian says:

Is there any reason you can’t get box scores in live milb games this year? Did they move the somewhere?

  140. Dela G says:

    damn grandy…

  141. Souter Fell says:

    ouch

  142. Alex S says:

oof Grandy took a hard hit

  143. YankeesJunkie says:

Nice block by Shoppach, Grandy was not going to get through that wall.

  144. chu hi says:

if your gonna go in standing, take him out curtis!

  145. Beef Hammerdong says:

Nice aggressive play. Grandy should’ve Pete Rose’d him.

  146. Reggie C. says:

Dammit. Grandy should’ve done drop kicked the a#*-hole.

  147. Raf says:

hard fall but could’ve been worse if he slid right into him. great block at the plate.

  148. poster says:

    Bad baserunning Grandy.

(Anbyody think the chick in the Sienna chevy commercial is a bitch? The commercial is implying that mothers are ugly and that SHE’S much hotter than most Moms. What a bitch.)

  149. Meh, it would have been nice for him to have scored, but whatevs. I’d prefer him to “lose” a run with less of a collision.

    Still, that looked pretty awkward.

  150. Salty Buggah says:

    Loving Gardy’s ABs today

  151. YankeesJunkie says:

Granderson should have gone out of his way to take that bitch out.

  152. Dalelama says:

Thatt is what happens when you dont slide…. where was the next hitter to tell Curtis to slode

  153. McCarver reminds me of an Einstein quote: The difference between genius and stupidity is genius has its limits.

  154. bexarama says:

I remember at one point in the World Series they were like “hey the Yankees are gonna lose because they have tall pitchers and the Phillies’ pitchers are short.” What?

  155. Reggie C. says:

Fucking ump. Bartlett was rung up.

  156. Dela G says:

    cmon zz!

  157. YankeesJunkie says:

    What a play!!!!

  158. ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

    Holy jumping hell Tex!

  161. Alex S says:

    WOW Tex!

  162. Spaceman.Spiff says:

    CC, GOLD WATCH PRONTO.

  163. Raf says:

    woo what a dive!

  164. Not The Rays says:

AND Teix’s UZR just fell even lower!!!!!

  165. chu hi says:

    OMFG! TEX!!!

  166. emills says:

  168. Ghost of Scott Brosius says:

  169. danny says:

  170. Tex just saved the no-no!

    /jinx

  171. Salty Buggah says:

    SIMP then JIMP…

  172. poster says:

    ….!!!

  173. W.W.J.M.D. says:

At least Tex glove is still around. When are we gonna call up Miranda to play teh 1st base?

  174. ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

What made that play amazing is that the ball lost speed while getting from Bartlett’s bat to Teixeira’s glove.

  175. Was that as close as Gameday made it look?

  176. Dela G says:

    damn kapler!

  177. Wow, what a catch! Too bad Kapler can’t hit a baseball. He might be pretty good!

  178. chu hi says:

    touche’ kapler

  179. bexarama says:

how long until the FJM guys start sending terribly baiting e-mails in to Joe/Tim?

  180. chu hi says:

did he say fred couple’s cock?

  181. Ghost of Scott Brosius says:

Matsui is to Fred Couples as Tim Mccarver is to…..what? I’m very confused.

  182. Please shut the fuck up, McCarver. You’re like my Grandpa I purposely leave to wander around Home Depot.

  183. Salty Buggah says:

Joe Buck: We have ACTION! in St. Pete

I wonder what McCarver just did…

  184. Raf says:

    tight zone.

  185. It’s like the ump is purposely trying to make CC work harder. He hasn’t gotten borderline calls.

  186. SmittDogg says:

Do you think the guy who tailors CC’s parachute pants also does the tailoring on Derek’s plum-smuggler pants?

If so, that guy’s got range!

  187. Dela G says:

    nice play!!

  188. bexarama says:

    Niiiice play.

  189. Beef Hammerdong says:

    Them’s the breaks.

  190. dkidd says:

carl crawford is the oldest-seeming 28 year old since james worthy

  191. Souter Fell says:

i think you can see Crawford say “oh sh*t” as he slid through

  192. JobaTheHeat62 says:

How far did AJ take the no hitter against the rays last year? You guys remember that game?

  193. Raf says:

    another close one

  194. poster says:

    That ball was where?

  195. AJ says:

Anybody else feel like CC is getting squeezed just a bit?

  196. Beef Hammerdong says:

    Nasty.

  197. bexarama says:

Yeah that makes up for the other 20860486098 definite strikes that he missed.

  198. camilo Gerardo says:

    niiiCCe

  199. SmittDogg says:

    Nice framing job by Cervelli

  200. Arman Tamzarian says:

    aboulent?

  201. Salty Buggah says:

Ok, I was great yesterday, even with the beating, but today is a horrible time for zen baseball.

  202. Not The Rays says:

You know what’s weird about games like this? I stop caring about yankee AB’s around now.

  203. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Screw it let him go.

  204. JobaTheHeat62 says:

    CC over 100 pitches

  205. AJ says:

CC’s thrown 17 this inning, and if this ump wasn’t squeezing him, he may have only thrown 10-12.

  206. Dela G says:

lol i love how the entire crowd is rooting for cc

  207. Raf says:

    woof cmon ump

  208. BigBlueAL says:

I think I got home at a perfect time. BTW, this plate ump fuckin sucks.

  209. SmittDogg says:

Ya gotta be shitting me. Thats easily strike three

  210. Souter Fell says:

if they aint gonna call strikes, don’t whine that the games are too long

  211. Dela G says:

    WOWOWOWOW

    ALEX FUCKING RODRIGUEZ!

  212. Zack says:

    AROD!!!!!!

  213. Raf says:

Damn, I’m never going to get over the creepiness of Alex as a centaur. Ughhh, creepy. But great play by Alex anywho…

  215. JobaWockeeZ says:

If umps want to fucking go home CALL A DAMN STRIKE.

  216. camilo Gerardo says:

    Dayum, Alex

  217. Spaceman.Spiff says:

    AROD

  218. emills says:

    wow…this is amazing

  219. Not The Rays says:

Is that Joe West behind the plate?

    AROD!!!!!!

  220. The D is amazing tonight.

  221. Souter Fell says:

    Awesome ARod. Great save.

  222. JobaTheHeat62 says:

6 outs way fellas….what a treat that would be

  223. Reggie C. says:

OMG. This shit is getting serious.

    Arod!

  224. JobaWockeeZ says:

    A-RODDDD!!!!!!
    TEIXX!!!!!!

  225. W.W.J.M.D. says:

A-Rod is having a hell of a game defensively!

  226. chu hi says:

    A-ROD!

  227. Beef Hammerdong says:

Ca$hmoney been knew about run prevention.

  228. JobaWockeeZ says:

If this pulls off on my birthday I will forever love CC Sabathia.

  229. Raf says:

Girardi gonna say fuck it to the pitch count and just leave him in there for the next 6 outs?

  230. Salty Buggah says:

If you didn’t jizz in your pants after that play, go have a talk with your doctor.

  231. JobaTheHeat62 says:

    CC owes people some porterhouses

  232. poster says:

    !!!!!!!

  233. bexarama says:

I just stood up and applauded.

  234. AJ says:

When I saw the replay of the 2-2 pitch to BJ Upton, I noticed the plate looked a little dirty. Maybe the ump need to clean it off every now and then so he can see the corners.

  235. danny says:

    omggggggggggggggggggggggggg!

  236. Maybe I’m just lame but I’d rather have CC throw 110 pitches in 7 innings than get a no-hitter at 130-something in 9. If it’s July, maybe I see it a bit differently, but not on April 10th.

    • JobaTheHeat62 says:

I see the logic, but a no hitter against the Rays is just badass

    • Spaceman.Spiff says:

      LAME

    • poster says:

      You’re just lame.

    • Zack says:

      you’re lame :)

    • Alex S says:

i understand where you’re coming from but do you really think 20 extra pitches for a guy like Sabathia is really that much. the guy is a work horse

      • whozat says:

Yeah, I do think it is. And I want to win the world series again…CC throwing 20 more pitches today doesn’t help that goal, but it _might_ hurt.

        • Alex S says:

he pitched on short rest all of the playoffs last season and before that he did it for The Brewers too. I really don’t think 130 pitches for CC is too much

          • whozat says:

I am aware of CC’s resume, thanks.

However, it’s early April. Instead of having built up his stamina, he’s thrown ONE outing of over 100 pitches thus far.

Would he probably be fine? Yeah. Is there reason to think the risk right now is greater than it would be in October? A bit. Is there upside lower now than in October? Certainly.

            So…

  237. Dela G says:

    great job texy

  238. Raf says:

    time to heat up Teix

  239. JobaTheHeat62 says:

Im shocked every website that has any word on sports isn’t reporting CC’s performance

  240. AJ says:

It would be great if A-Rod destroys this next pitch.

  241. Zack says:

    Tex = Heating Up

  242. There should be a Gold Watch count on the side bar.

    A-Rod – 1
    Teixeira – 1

  243. bexarama says:

how in the world was that a strike? It was in the dirt!!!

Also, very very very SSS, but A-Rod’s looked really good at D so far this season.

  244. Raf says:

that was a strike but the ones in the top of the inning werent?

  245. PaulF says:

“You can’t figure baseball, don’t even try”

  246. dkidd says:

you know who doesn’t bitch about having work more than three hours?

    robots

  247. Alex S says:

i love it when A-Rod flips the bat like that after a hit

  248. AJ says:

    Here’s that dialogue:

    A-Rod “Really, that’s a strike.”

    Ump: “Yup”

A-Rod (chuckling): “Maybe you should call that for CC sometime.”

  249. camilo Gerardo says:

    Encore from Robi!?

  250. JobaTheHeat62 says:

TEX and AROD back to back

  251. Ryan says:

LOL@ the “Let’s go Yankees” chant. Almost sounds like there’s more Yankee fans at the Trop tonight than Rays fans

  252. Zack says:

“Yankees suck” chant last night, “Lets go Yankees chant today.” Love those die-hard Ray fans filling up their stadium.

  253. I bet there are TONS of fairweather fans. There were loud “Yankees Suck” chants yesterday and just now we heard cheers for the Yankees that were again quite loud.

I know the attendance is split with fans of both teams but doesn’t that just seem weird?

  254. AJ says:

    Tim McCarver’s math skills

    2010 – 1998 = 13 years

Now I realize how little I missed Dumb and Dumber this offseason.

  255. Zack, Ryan and I basically said the same thing, oh reader. So just choose to read one of the comments. It’ll save you time.

  256. bexarama says:

    Typical Cano RISP luck :(

  257. craggy (formerly crapula) says:

I think just about everyone from my high school in NYC lives in Florida now. I know tons of NYers in FL

  258. Dela G says:

man swisher has been a killah for my fantasy team

  259. bexarama says:

    Teixeira: base-clogger

    • bexarama says:

also, I don’t think there are necessarily fairweather Rays fans at the Trop, I just think there are a lot of fans of both teams at this game, but the dome thing makes everything sound so amplified. Last night the Yankee fans didn’t have much to cheer about after the, what, fourth?

      WOO GRANDERSON AGAINST A LEFTY!!!!

    • JobaTheHeat62 says:

      top 5 in baseball

      • bexarama says:

He is incredibly slow. I know people whined about NJ but I feel like Tex is way slower. Not that it matters because he’s like really really good at baseball.

  260. charles poet says:

tried staying away but this is too fucking exciting… Cmon CC… Throw that shit!!!!!

  261. mustang says:

    are we having fun yet

  262. JobaTheHeat62 says:

haha in the brewers cards game, the announcers just said if CC finishes it he will be owing TEX and AROD some Rolexes

  263. dkidd says:

    time for a granderslam

  264. JobaTheHeat62 says:

    a GRANDERSLAM would be sick

  265. Dela G says:

looks like we have a carousel going on

    5-0

  266. Alex S says:

    off a lefty

  267. Raf says:

nice Grandy. against a sidearm throwing lefty too.

  268. BigBlueAL says:

What????? Granderson with a hit vs a LHP?? Impossible….

  269. mustang says:

    its just not fair

  270. claybeez says:

    Nice job Grandy!

  271. AJ says:

BUT I THOUGHT GRANDERSON COULDN’T HIT TEH LEFT-HANDED PITCHING!!!!!!!!!!

  272. AJ says:

Oohhhh isn’t he grand. Don’t worry it will catch on.

  273. Souter Fell says:

    nice knock off the lefty

  274. Ghost of Scott Brosius says:

    The Grandy Man Can…hit lefties

  275. AJ says:

Hey there’s another AJ now. This is awkward.

    • AJ M. says:

Slightly awkward. We should find a way to distinguish ourselves, which I just did. If your last name ends in a M, then we’re really stuck.

  276. Zack says:

With the sacks jammed? Just say bases loaded.

  277. pete says:

If Gardner walks with the bases loaded, I will laugh histerically

  278. JobaTheHeat62 says:

what a trade to get Granderson…and CC is getting plenty of rest this inning

  279. camilo Gerardo says:

    lol @ teh ump

  280. ClayBuchholzLovesLaptops says:

You think Winn is coming in for Swisher in the bottom of the 8th?

  281. Alex S says:

    this strikezone it horrible

  282. JobaTheHeat62 says:

everytime Gardner sees 5 or more pitches in an AB its considered girtty

  283. Dela G says:

damn that was very close for the gritster

  284. AJ says:

A-Rod hasn’t ducked so quickly since he last saw Cynthia.

  285. Dela G says:

    good job gritster

    getting the run scored 6-0

  286. Raf says:

ill take that from Gardner. another good AB this game.

  287. Ghost of Scott Brosius says:

    God I love fast people

  288. Ryan says:

That helmet looks way too big for Cervelli.

  289. AJ M. says:

If CC throws a no-hitter to Cervelli, do we get the same drama as last year, when Molina had to exclusively throw to Molina?

  290. Dela G says:

damn, business, we are in it

  291. Alex S says:

that was not a pop fly Tim

  292. bexarama says:

    WHERE’S TEH OFFENSE?!??!?!

  293. AJ B. says:

    Vaya Cervelli!

  294. Ghost of Scott Brosius says:

    Uh oh. Jorge looks worried.

  295. You guys remember last night? This is like the complete opposite.

  296. OK, time to get the ball back to ZZ.

  297. Souter Fell says:

Ha, Cervelli’s cool too. This is such a likable team

  298. dkidd says:

frankie’s reaction on 2b made my wife go “awwww”

  299. BigBlueAL says:

This long Top of the 8th can not be a good thing for CC.

    • JobaTheHeat62 says:

I was thinking the same thing…The best thing for him would be a nice quick inning, but then again an 8-0 ass kicking of the Rays, a team everyone deep throats 10x a day, is awesome.

  300. Dela G says:

man i love this team. even the backup catcher is clutch money

  301. danny says:

    frankie!

  302. pete says:

Gardner is on right now. I think it’s getting to the point where you have him play 9 innings a day, every day, until he starts to suck.

    • JobaTheHeat62 says:

especially when the alternative is Marcus Thames…I would rather have 0-4 from Gardner as long as they are solid ABs with his defense.

      • Raf says:

especially since any time he gets on base hes a threat to run and make things happen. lose that and the defense when Thames plays.

  303. CC’s going to finish. He’s gotten a shit ton of rest this half.

  304. Salty Buggah says:

Wow, A-Rod is trending on Twitter.

  305. Me says:

I can’t wait for the “Posada can’t catch teh CC!111!” rants

  306. Across the pond says:

Yay Gazoo! I wants that helmet

  307. Alex S says:

    back to work son!

  308. Across the pond says:

These Yankees are an embarrassment! We’ll never finish this game on time with play like that!

  309. Let’s do this CC!!!!!! In CC Sabathis we trust.

  310. chu hi says:

long inning help or hurt cc? or doesn’t matter.

  311. JobaTheHeat62 says:

best defense the Yankees can have on the field.

  312. Souter Fell says:

    holy crap!

  313. chu hi says:

    magic in the air!

  314. JobaTheHeat62 says:

    5 more baby

  315. Raf says:

holy hell. dont throw out your bare hand like that again CC. good play by Robbie picking it up

  316. Cecala says:

Isn’t Cano supposed to be lazy?

  317. bexarama says:

Stop talking about “destiny” FOX, you’re giving me a hernia!!!

  318. Ghost of Scott Brosius says:

Why do the pitchers always touch easy ground balls?

  319. danny says:

my heart can not take this

  320. Dela G says:

    great play by cano

  321. Alex S says:

OMG. hope his hand is ok.

    ROLEX WATCH watch

    Tex 1
    A rod 1
    Cano 1

  322. JobaTheHeat62 says:

    CANO is insane

  323. poster says:

    Go Cano!

  324. bexarama says:

CAN YOU GIVE THE GUY A FUCKING CALL??

  325. Across the pond says:

3 easy web gems for tonight

  326. JobaTheHeat62 says:

    OMG this is intense

  327. danny says:

didnt he throw a no hiter with the brewers?

  328. AJ B. says:

So how many of us are superstitious?

  329. Dela G says:

man i hope ZZ can finish this one

    4 more outs

  330. AJ B. says:

    God damnit.

  331. JobaTheHeat62 says:

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  332. Raf says:

shit. great job by CC though.

  333. bexarama says:

    Awwwwww :(

    Good job CC!!!

  334. Dela G says:

    oh man that sucked

    great job CC

    he deserves the standing O

  335. SmittDogg says:

    Goddamn it

  336. Souter Fell says:

oh well, great game big guy

  337. Fucking Shoppach. I hate him now.

  338. danny says:

    nooooooooooooo

  339. AJ B. says:

    Marcus Thames woulda dove.

  340. Cecala says:

    =’(

  341. poster says:

    Poor CC.

  342. Doug says:

    BOO KELLY SHOPPACH

YAY LONG TERM PITCHING STAFF MANAGEMENT

  343. Well at least he’s not throwing 140 pitches in his second start.

    • Reggie C. says:

      THIS.

    • poster says:

He was on pace for like 120, not 140. At least, it seemed that way too me.

      • He was at 111 (I think) when he left the game. Even if we put it at 10-15 pitches, I still would like to proceed on the side of caution. CC pitched an outrageous amount of innings last year deep into the Fall. He didn’t get much work in over the Spring. Having him throw 120+ pitches in the second start of the year just seems silly to me. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.

I know I sound like I’m no fun or whatever, but the goal is to win the World Series. Having Sabathia throw that many pitches this early I don’t think increases our chances of reaching that goal. If anything, it could be a real detriment when you factor his off-season and how many he threw last year. That’s probably the last guy on this team you want getting injured.

If this outing had happened in even early May I’d have said, “Yeah, go for 120-135 pitches. Fine.” But it’s too early.

JMO. I see the other side, too.

  344. claybeez says:

Ahh, too bad. Hell of a game he pitched, though.

  345. Damn you, Kelly Shoppach!

  346. JobaTheHeat62 says:

    standing O for CC

  347. Kelly Shoppach!?!?!? Are you kidding me?!?!?!?

  348. Alex S says:

damn too bad. great game by CC though.

  349. BigBlueAL says:

    Fuck myself!!!!

  350. Souter Fell says:

i know it doesnt matter to him, but it’s awesome to see that response from a “away” crowd.

  351. WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

  352. Marcos says:

Ah frick… oh well, great game by CC anyway!
If brett can’t make it, nobody can!

  353. DAMN!

I’ve been afraid to post since I first came home and saw what was up, not wanting to jinx it.

And, yes, I know jinxes don’t exist, etc. etc.

Ahhh sh*t. At least it was a clean hit.

Anybody think he might have tired a bit due to the extra pitches he had to throw because the ump wouldn’t give the high strike, or several low strike?

  354. chu hi says:

    great performance cc.

  355. wtfman says:

all that matters are winning and staying healthy

  356. JobaTheHeat62 says:

    great start for DROB lol

  357. Jason says:

It’s a good thing the no no was broken up, because it would have been awkward for Giradi to bring in Pena for Jeter in the 9th…

    ::Ducks and runs::

  358. bexarama says:

Standing Os by away teams make me get all teary-eyed.

  359. Alex S says:

the ump had a terrible zone the whole day

    • JobaTheHeat62 says:

oh yea, but its the American Leagues top 2 teams that are the disgrace. MLB Umpiring has been nothing short of embarrassing since the playoffs last year.

    • poster says:

With a good zone CC could have had a perfect fucking game. You think he’d get a bit tired with all those extra pitches.

  360. AJ B. says:

I don’t care how the crowd reacted. If someone threw a perfect game against the Yanks I’d boo till my throat was sore.

  361. JobaTheHeat62 says:

man I am in love with this team…Its crazy, 1 to 25, its just beastly.

  362. BigBlueAL says:

Johnny Damon wouldve caught that ball!!!! lol

  363. Reggie C. says:

Whatevs. We’re drubbing the Rays. Feels good!

  364. camilo Gerardo says:

    Jupiter’s C*ck!!

    /Starz’ Spartacus Reference

  365. JobaTheHeat62 says:

I say we build on this guy’s 20 ERA

  366. Joe D says:

CIn a keeper league I was just offered Billingsly Beckett Holliday and Chapman for The Horse who is CC, Garza, and Gardner. What do you think? Fair Deal?

    • JobaTheHeat62 says:

I would do it for now and the future…Obviously CC and Garza are way better than Bills and Beckett, but damn Holliday for Gardy?? and You get Chapman for nothing? I pull trigger no doubt, unless you think Gardner will maintain that .450 batting average.

    • camilo Gerardo says:

I’d do it. Billingsly, Beckett, Holliday >> CC, Garza Gardner

Chapman is a free lottery ticket

    • Dela G says:

i would take it, but prolly cuz i’m on drugs

  367. @OldHossRadbourn: Were I hurlin’ a no-no and a player like K. Shoppach broke it up, I would hit the next 3 batters then shoot Shoppach as he crossed home.

    http://twitter.com/OldHossRadb.....1958057971

    This guy is pure money.

  368. pete says:

    Nick Johnson is an advanced-stat-padder

  369. bexarama says:

    lol wut

  370. Can someone please explain the Teixeira play?

    • bexarama says:

ball hit off the wall, Nick Johnson thought Crawford caught it? and stood on 2B while Teixeira ran and got caught off 1B. I think that’s what happened.

      Cano with the RISP!!!!

      • whozat says:

I believe that, if the ball had bounced off of carl himself, it would have been a catch. Like, if it bounded into and out of his glove, and then he caught it on the fly.

      • Yeah, I think maybe NJ thought the ball hit off Crawford’s glove instead of off the wall, so when it popped up in the air and Crawford caught it before it hit the ground, NJ thought it was an out.

Or he just didn’t see it well at all?

    • whozat says:

Ball bounced vertically off the top of wall, crawford caught it in the air and threw it back in. NJ couldn’t tell if it was a catch or not (it wasn’t) so he was standing on 2nd and started heading back to 1st. Tex rounded 1st and only saw NJ when he was halfway between the bases, and got run down.

    • This is what I interpreted from that:

Johnson thought that Tex homered, and so stopped at second. Teixeira was telling Johnson that the ball bounced off the wall, but the ball came to the infield and Tex got caught in the rundown. Some stupid baserunning right there.

      • whozat says:

No, I think NJ thought it might have been a catch, which is why he stopped and started back to 1st. And, it could have been a catch.

    • W.W.J.M.D. says:

He hit the ball to the LF field wall, where it bounced directly up and dropped down and Carl Crawford caught it. Nick Johnson stayed at 2nd because he thought it was caught and Tex got caught going for returning to 1st from 2nd after he realized NJ was standing on the bag and wasn’t moving to 3rd.

  371. JobaTheHeat62 says:

A-ROD and TEX 5-8 = Lots of wins

  372. Dela G says:

    cano delivers like UPS

  373. danny says:

    Ribbie!

  374. JobaTheHeat62 says:

    Robbie for MVP

  375. Across the pond says:

Sending NJ there is a recipe for a DL stint.

    • Reggie C. says:

Kinda what I was thinking. Pinch running for NJ in the 9th inning of a blow-out should be at the fore-front of Joe G.’s mind.

  376. Souter Fell says:

nick johnson sliding, almost as white knuckling as taking a no hitter into the eighth

  377. JobaTheHeat62 says:

I hope Randy Winn hits a triple

  378. dkidd says:

if robbie gets a hit with risp but the game is a blow out, is he still lazy and unclutch?

  379. W.W.J.M.D. says:

I knew Robbie would be gold in the 5th spot, even after last year.

  380. Dela G says:

    could we get a gritslam!!??!!

  381. JobaTheHeat62 says:

How many runs would a lineup of 9 Brett Gardners score in a full season?

  382. YankeeScribe says:

    stat padders

  383. bexarama says:

    That’s a looootta pitches o_O

  384. Across the pond says:

Jeeeez I want to go to bed! HURRY UP

  385. Dela G says:

    wow this is hilarious

cervelli has a chance at the GS

    • whozat says:

No, it’s a DISGRACE! The Yankees should be swinging more at pitches outside the strike zone so that the poor, fat umps can hit the buffet!

  386. A Cervelli grand slam would just make this incredible.

  387. Look at Grit, taking a strike with a 9-0 lead in the 9th when the game has gone over 3 hours. Embarrasing and pathetic.

  388. Dela G says:

    well that’s ok

great job by the yanks offense

  389. Across the pond says:

Nice of Frankie to do the kid a favour there.

  390. bexarama says:

Today I saw Jeff Francoeur walk on four pitches. Therefore, a Gardner grand slam would have been only the second most surprising thing of the day.

  391. Dela G says:

This team will be so much fun to watch this season

  392. Sean C says:

any chance d-rob let’s the rays get a couple hits, just to lift their spirits a little? Anyone remember last year when Buehrle pitched the perfect game against them? That’s gotta suck for them.

  393. Zack says:

DRob working on that K rate

  394. Across the pond says:

    Well that was fun!

  395. bexarama says:

Yo Yankees. That was highly enjoyable. If you could have like, eh, 150 or so more games like that, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

    Love,
    bexy

  396. Across the pond says:

Now to watch Zack attack rip through the sox and I’ll sleep happily ever after.

  397. Nothing beats a dominant game on a Saturday afternoon…makes the weekend so much more fun.
