Game 5: Turning over the rotation
ByThe off-days have been frustrating for us, but they’re a boon for the pitching staff. Because the team didn’t play Monday and Thursday, they can skip the No. 5 starter and head right back to the top of the rotation. Heck, CC’s even getting extra rest here, five days instead of the regular four.
Meanwhile, the fifth starter, Phil Hughes, pitched in his final extended spring training outing today. I’ll spare you the stats, but everyone seems pleased enough with his performance. He’ll pitch Thursday in the series finale vs. the Angels.
Rookie Wade Davis takes the hill for the Rays. The 24-year-old will make his seventh career start. His sixth career start, incidentally, was also against the Yankees. He pitched five innings on the season’s final day, allowing five runs, three earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out five. All three came on A-Rod‘s first home run of the inning. He then allowed two more batters to reach, both of whom scored. It was on an error, though, so he wasn’t charged. This, I think, helps illustrated the absurdity of the earned run.
Posada predictably sits on a day game after a night game. Swisher leapfrogs Granderson into the No. 6 spot, and everything else looks pretty much the same. The Rays have a bit of a different look, playing Zobrist at second and Gabe Kapler in right field against the lefty Sabathia.
Lineup:
1. Derek Jeter, SS
2. Nick Johnson, DH
3. Mark Teixeira, 1B
4. Alex Rodriguez, 3B
5. Robinson Cano, 2B
6. Nick Swisher, RF
7. Curtis Granderson, CF
8. Brett Gardner, LF
9. Francisco Cervelli, C
And on the mound, number fifty-two, CC Sabathia.

Anyone see This Week In Baseball today? It was an episode about the Yankees so it was nice.
The double steal never gets old
Yea, I still got goosebumps watching the highlights.
things I never wanted to see: Dustin Pedroia without a shirt
+infinity.
I’m sorry this happened.
Papelbon and Lackey have the most annoying voices. Fitting really.
Tino’s voice is just plain odd.
Lackey sounds like Helen Keller.
IETC.
As exciting as it is to see CC today, I kinda wanted to see Hughes against Davis. That would’ve been a good matchup.
But being a spoiled fan, I shouldn’t really complain. Hope CC can rebound today. If he doesn’t, oh well. He’ll switch into beast mode soon enough.
oh how I missed Ford Keys to the Game
Yankees: stop the Rays’ best players
Rays: beat CC Sabathia
Awesome.
CHOP is enjoying the view
ok the REAL Chop is Hideki Matsui, Because of Chop Suey. We’ve been calling him that since he was signed you can’t just steal the nick name for Chan Ho Park all of a sudden.
Chan Ho has been called CHOP his whole career.
since before Matsui was even in the league
I have literally never heard anyone call Matsui Chop Suey.
same here
ditto
me neither
agreed
/piling on
Last time I checked Matsui plays for the Angels and Chan Ho Park plays for the Yankees. So, I deem that from now until his tenure with the Yankees is over, Park’s nickname shall be CHoP.
Good day, sir.
Arod 1 hit away from 1000 hits with the yanks
Well lets see the Yankees get back on track today.
A Matsui/Damon mention without a mention of clutchness. Color me impressed Buck.
It’s cool. McCarver whined about Johnson working the count because (apparently) DHes are supposed to be hackers like Vlad.
Poor Teixeira.
His numbers will come, they always come.
Oh I know. I’m not worried at all. I just feel bad for the guy (well not really, he’s getting paid like a mrajillion dollars, but you know what I mean). I also think last year he looked a LOT more helpless at the plate in April, but he’s still not getting results. Who knows why.
BABIP hates Tex early in the season. He smoked that one, but right to Zobrist.
eh, sounded like the bat broke. Still, the shift got him. Maddon’s all about positioning :-/
Oh well, Tex. Shift happens
IETC. Normally I hate puns, but that was a pretty good one.
Tex is inching closer to the Yankee record for most hitless ABs to start a season.
what’s the record? He just set his own record.
Including pitchers, its 38 ABs/PAs by George Pipgras.
Just hitters, but not restricted to every day players (inc. pinch hitters) from the start of the season, it is Len Boehmer at 28PA/26AB.
Just everyday players, it’s Wally Schang at 24AB/27PA.
Hmm. Thanks.
If anyone gets tired of Joe Buck, Fox Sports en Espanol actually does a great job covering the Yankee games. If you can understand them.
And the new graphics on YES have surpassed Fox, awesome.
Apparently the Fox Sports en Espanol commentators were saying that CC’s grandmother that raised him is just as big as he is. I’m imagining Tyler Perry’s Madea character.
I have watched a couple games on Fox Espanol and it is pretty fun, especially when someone strikes out or hits a home run.
heh, if you have the Yankeeography 2009 DVD, they have the Yankees’ Spanish radio announcer announcing the Yankees winning the division. You have never heard someone get so excited about a groundout.
Nice CC. Is there anyone he’s not “really good friends” with?
A-Rod. No one likes that guy…
haha A+
Also Cervelli is catching him, he clearly hates Posada!!!
His dietician
this is another very good response
so who had 3:26 in the payroll discusion pool? God I hate FOX games
Good thing ZZ is settling in.
It’s all Cervelli. Give him the credit.
/MSM’d
Everything is so weirdly loud in the Trop. Like, the boos from earlier, and then the explosion of cheers when A-Rod hit the ball.
And the tourist’s clothing.
Well, the boos are from McCarver, so that should be louder.
heh
Apparently you can email Buck and McCarver. I’d laugh if they let some spam through.
god i’m sick of not having a tv
When’s the last time you saw Cano swing and miss at 3 pitches?
Getting caught stealing and then chasing a ball to strikeout. Nice guys.
Ugh. Bad jump and Robbie chased. But I like what I’m seeing from Cano. He’s definitely has been more disciplined thus far.
Just getting to a full count is a step in the right direction.
Ugh, rough half-inning.
It’s almost scary how good this rays rotation can be when hellickson is mlb ready.
This. And they’re all fairly young too. It’s crazy.
You know….Jeet…
i fixteded it
Apparently, you can preview tags just fine. But if you try to post them you end up looking like a retard.
So…
And reply fail is complete.
I miss the YES pitch counter
also stop disrespecting the game by asking for a time-out, Evan
It might just be me but whether or not the Yankees are winning or losing, I still can’t enjoy the game as much because the stadium is so dark, dreary, ugly and depressing.
and cowbell-y
(thanks for the image you put on my post this morning if that was you and not Steve. Heh.)
Not as and Oakland’s stadium
Uh, what happened there?
*Not as bad as Oakland’s Stadium
Arod has one hell of an arm. Wow.
Oh Mo, please somehow give us a 0 UZR from A-Rod this year.
that would be fantastic
Granderson is bad against lefties?? I’d never heard this before.
Seriously, they picked the crappest question they could. That was a radio talk-show quality question.
Someone’s steling seconddddd
or stealing
Cervelli doesn’t use batting gloves? Interrresssting
He probably pees on his hands, like Jorge
He also uses Posada’s urine to make his hands tough.
McCarver can understand things? News to me.
that’s a funny image of Tex and A-Rod.
thoughts on cervelli’s helmet?
Get used to it. It will be standard in a few years.
I think RAB mentioned it earlier this week, but holy crap jetes is grounding out to short like crazy.
holy shit reply fail. lol
As ugly as John Lannan.
Uglier than David Wright
I’m in favor of anything that makes the game safer, without impacting a player’s ability to perform.
Funny looking helmets>>>>>>>Only hitting QB’s between the chest and belly button
makes him look like a little leaguer. but if it saves his dome, good for him.
Is McCarver blind?
Yes, and that’s the least of his problems.
Fantastic at-bat by Cervelli.
Awesome AB by F-Cerv. No DP Jeter
Fucker
aaarghhhhghgh
How does Jeter have a .316 average already? That seems wrong.
Dear Derek:
Stop.
Love, Pete
Ugh. We had Davis on the ropes there.
jete’s, um can you lift something?
awesome jetes just awesome
Jeter must want to speed up the game.
I laughed.
Somewhere Joe West is smiling at that Jeter At-bat.
Jeter just made Joe West’s day
Jeets. =/
Derek Jeter sporting Wangesque 12.00 GO/FO ratio.
Is it just me or does Jimmy Clausen look like Jonathan Papelbon?
I thought the same thing this morning when a friend walked into work with the ESPN mag. Made me dislike him just a little bit more.
yea thats what first gave me the idea. I got my copy of the mag 2 days ago
I’m not sure who that is more disrespectful to
Claussen looks like an emu.
Not in the least. But I do like the look-a-like game. Teixeira looks like the 2nd elf character in Lord of the Rings 3 (Haldir). And it’s an exact replica.
http://www.ageofthering.com/at.....haldir.jpg
http://media.photobucket.com/i.....eira-1.jpg
or maybe not.
http://totallylookslike.com/
I don’t want to sound like I’m bashing Jeter but how many weak groundballs has Jeter hit to SS so far? I know he hits lots of balls on the ground and he hits into his share of DPs but is just seems like he’s bouncing an inordinate amount of balls to the left side?
a) It’s not bashing to mention a flaw in a player’s game
b) No player’s past makes him immune to valid criticism
c) yes, it has seemed like that so far in this young season.
But IF that was a product of him trying to protect Gardner’s fake steal, he had an excuse that time.
6 pitch inning. Holy efficiency Batman!!!!!
Not gonna happen, Michael. ‘Cuz it’s the Astros.
Where’s the offense?
They’re not hungry enough after winning the WS last year
PAAAANNNNIIICCCCCCC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SELF-PROMOTION WHOOOO!!!
there it is
Someone looks silly two hours later…
I’ve noticed the same thing. I haven’t seen every AB, so I wasn’t sure if my eyes were deceiving me.
(This will probably be a reply fail since I’m on my phone)
A-Don’t Ya Know!!
Finally. Some runs
cano!
Wow, robbie. Way to crush that one.
Cano got that jacked up Bonds swagger.
That’s right Robby, lazily job around the bases after your HR.
Robbie!
Ribbie!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I Heart Robbie Cano (someone get me a t-shirt)
Love his HR trot, LOVE IT!!
Wow Cano just hit that a mile.
Wade Davis should be moved to the ‘pen. He gave up some runs.
He’s lazy. Just didn’t want to run around the bases.
Precisely the reason that the Yankee and Red Sox games and embarrassing and painfully slow. Case closed.
Does John Sterling really say “something sort of grandish” when Granderson hits a homerun?…I feel he’s not taking advantage of the opportunities. And it’s horrible. What about…
Ohhh isn’t he grand….A Curtain Call by Curtis!…A shot courtesy of curtis….etc.
yes, he does. Apparently it’s like a split call and he also says “the Grandy Man Can!” which is much better.
He changed to “The Grandy-Man Can” after the home run off Papelbon.
Who says Cano is unclutch?
whites
ZING!
His career .256 BA, .398 SLUG and .291 OBP with runners in scoring position.
IETC. Truth hurts, but Robbie will change it this year
If Posada were catching this game we’d be losing 27-2!!
/NY Media’d
I have a friend that talks like that. It’s difficult.
Cano hit with good baseball player hitter no walks
Ozzie, is that you?
It’s Manny. “If they dun won me, All dey got to do is write me letter. And das it”
haha. It’s either Ozzie or McCarver.
is Oz no. dorThey HA!. Hard game sun today chicago swim
never stop doing this
I said it in the other thread. Melky looks like Big Papi now.
At least he isn’t the corpse of a roider.
Steroids don’t make great athletes…they destroy them.
/PSA’d
Well done Swish. Davis up to 21 pitches this inning.
2nd time through the order, this lineup is ridiculous, not that it’s bad the 1st time around.
RBInson Cano, awesome player.
Instead of Robbie, his new nickname is “Ribbie”
I hope it sticks.
http://riveraveblues.com/2010/.....ent-832822
If you think the stadium is bad, wait till you visit the neighborhood AROUND the stadium. Uy…
Makes the south Bronx look like the French Riviera…in August…during the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit photoshoot..
Hah. Sounds lovely. Hard to believe Elijah Dukes had a tough time growing up (I believe he’s from the area).
there’s some pretty good strip clubs.
If you like that cracked out of their mind look.
if i’ve smoked enough myself i don’t mind.
Strip clubs in St. Pete? I think you mean Steinbrenner Field.
could be. it was a boozy spring training trip in 2004.
St. Petersburg murder rates:
Shootings: +5%
Stabbings: +2%
Cowbell: +9001%
Between Wade Davis and Jeff Niemann, who has the better year for the Rays? I’m having a debate with a friend.
i hope it’s niemann, seeing that he’s on my fantasy team
Tie. I think Neimann throws 210 innings at a 4.18 ERA, while Davis throws 180 at 4.02.
Niemann but Davis has better upside. I only say Davis because he lacks the experience. Over the course of his career he should be a better pitcher.
Cervelli fired up
ZZ is on fiya!
see see.
Si Si Sabathia
I think CC has a new personal catcher.. Oh noes!!!
Sathia pitch hard fastbals change get effectige
I am dying with laughter from these, please don’t stop
grit gutner!!
so guys what’s going on ?
GGBG FTW!
Someone’s stealing seconddddd
great bunt by cervelli
Wow, great play by Longo.
And an excellent bunt, too.
Evan Longoria is so so so good.
If Cervelli homers we will have a full blown Catcher controversy on our hands.
el capitan!
That’s too bad for Cerv. Placed the bunt well. Cerv has wheels though. I wonder if he’s faster than Swisher.
Derek looks much better, eh guys?
He’s great as long as no one is on 1B.
Ha Gardner was already sitting on the bench eating sunflower seeds with A-Rod when the throw came in.
great minds…
You better believe it.
nice series of at bats.
by the time that throw reached the cutoff man, gardner was sitting in the dugout having a gatorade
When CC is on his game, you don’t need much in terms of offense. So if a personal catcher helps him, so be it. I’m not usually a fan of personal catchers.
(Sorry if this is a reply fail, I’m on my phone, I clicked reply, I swear!)
It is patently absurd to even be bringing this up right now. Posada caught CC all last season, all through the post-season, and he was DOMINANT.
are Jeter’s pants really tight today or is it just me? This question makes me sound like a very very shallow baseball fan.
or like tiger woods.
bexy you’re shoving your attraction to men down our throats
it has nothing to do with being attracted to him or not. It was just an observation. I felt weird asking it, though.
Didn’t mean to make anyone uncomfortable, though. Like I said, I knew it was a weird question to ask.
ha i was just playin no worries.
JETER!!!
hooray tex!
HITTTT
BIG TEXY!
woooo teix!
YESSSSSSS
TEX !!
JETER !!!
About freaking time Tex!
Slump. Over.
First to home has gotta be the most exciting play in baseball
Inside the park home-run?
Triple play?
He gave that ball a rough Teix massage.
UCWIDT?
I’ve started drinking. It’s going to be a long game, messagebaorders.
In the middle of the day?
Daylight savings?
Tex! Good way to break an 0-18 streak!
0-17. It was 0-16 to start the game and he was 0-1 with a walk
wow, i thought jetes was dead to rights
jeter looked really tired running home
woah anyone notice Tex’s eyes? it looks like he hasn’t slept for days
his hair is keeping him awake
Hah. Nice.
his hair is keeping ME awake
cut it!!!!!
Being the last guy on the squad to collect a hit, i’m sure Teix will sleep better tonight. Maybe his April-itis is a mitigable condition.
He stays up all night jacking balls working on his stroke.
He learned that from Matsui.
No Kay. He’s not around to mention something that pisses a lot of people off.
The people would really hate Kay if it happened today.
CC perfect through 4. Does that make you feel better?
/breaking tradition
Buck already mentioned it. Asshole.
Wtf. Longoria totally went.
Damn, CC looks really sharp.
Did they change the check swing rules this season? I don’t think the Yankees have gotten one call since the Opener.
The rule doesn’t apply to embarrassing disgraces.
It was changed to lengthen the game.
Awww, perfect game over.
Blah blah horse, blah blah. (I love you CC.)
Those horns and cowbells are super annoying. How could anyone stand that?
I was gonna say, goddamn, the horns are even worse than the cowbells
At least we’re not watching Brazil in the 2008 Summer Olympics.
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
Don’t worry this years World Cup will be buzzing like crazy. I’ll will hear those horns in my head until September.
The internet feed was awesome for the ’08 games.
No commentary. Pure atmosphere. Africanized. Bees.
Grain alcohol.
CC obviously looking much sharper today than he did in Boston.
cervelli’s gonna get plunked
Bush league fist pump by Cervelli. Act like you’ve been there before, kid.
HE ONLY CATCHES TEH AIFF!!!!1!!!1!1!1!!111!!!!!!!111
damn he looks good
sit downnn!
I did not realize he had a not hitter this long considering he threw 38 pitches the first two innings. Still that is pretty impressive lets see if he can’t go 12 more outs without a hit.
See how you jinx
CC rockin’ the no-hitter through five. Nice.
Here’s to hoping he rocks a no scorer til the end.
I hope not. He’s at 70 pitches through 5…nice, but not terribly efficient. At that pace he’d be at 126 through nine.
If he maintains the pace, I’d rather him just give up a hit and make it easy for JoeG to get some coffee.
YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH
OH SHIT NOW WE’VE JINXED IT OH SHIT OH SHIT
Speaking of jinxes…
The Yankees have not yet won a 2010 World Championship.
Oops!
Tim McCarver: “I get angry when I don’t understand things.”
Did he just argue that less pitches may cause injuries?
I stopped listening after “Pitch-count nonsense”.
There are too many fans of both teams at the Trop. Any time anything happens people are like YEAAAH WOOOOOO and it’s loud.
/old cranky person’d
On the plus side, Jeter’s pants shrunk in the wash
Come on Spider-Swish.
I hate McCarver. He says that pitchers can get hurt by throwing less pitches. Fucking idiot.
Does he understand the logic in that? I’m not one to join in the bitching about announcers, but that’s ridiculous
No, Tim…YOU have never bothered to READ any data that indicates a correlation.
McCarver’s opinion on pitch counts is interesting
Yup, there is no correlation to pitches and innings and injuries. None at all.
McCarver is like the Dusty Baker of announcing. He doesn’t understand it and he destroys any point of value he might have with his stupidity and short-sightedness.
Tim McCarver talking about common sense. That’s rich.
McCarver is an absolute Moron.
Yessss more Joba talk
Oh dear God what the hell are they saying?!?!?
OMG OMG BUCK STFU
good job grandy with the steal!
heres the part where they talk about how they were right all along with joba…
Very close play at second. Grandy did beat it out though.
when Shoppach first threw the ball it looked lik Grandy would be out. but he made a quick slide
McCarver fail. So throwing LESS pitches does more damage to an arm than throwing more pitchers. brilliant.
it wasn’t a failed experiment making Joba a starter. it was a successful experiment making him a reliever. He had been a starter his whole life.
I love Granderson
I take it back
Tim: “Don’t get sucked into all this ‘pitch count’ nonsense!”
Robothal: “well, all teams are taking the workload issue very seriously”
Tim: “Sure, that’s just common sense”
WHAT?!?!?!
My Goodness McCarver is on one helluva roll.
1) There is no correlation between pitches thrown and injury
2) The Joba Rules are the wrong rules
What will he do for an encore
Well, he’s dead on about #2. The 2009 version of the Joba Rules, anyway.
Anyone else feel like Tim McCarver digs the stolen base?
As good as the Yankees were in the first half of this game, that’s how as bad they’ve been in the second half.
/McCarverFamilyGuy’d
Damn…could Buck and Mccarver get any stupider?
I don’t even hate them like many people here but shit, they’re making themselves sound SO stupid.
Is there any reason you can’t get box scores in live milb games this year? Did they move the somewhere?
They’re having trouble this year. Some of them are popping up late, midway through the game.
live pitch by pitch is gone for mlb games as well, I loved that when I was at work
Try espn or yahoo sports
damn grandy…
Got a faceful of chalk too.
yeah that sucks, too :/
ouch
oof Grandy took a hard hit
Nice block by Shoppach, Grandy was not going to get through that wall.
if your gonna go in standing, take him out curtis!
Nice aggressive play. Grandy should’ve Pete Rose’d him.
Dammit. Grandy should’ve done drop kicked the a#*-hole.
hard fall but could’ve been worse if he slid right into him. great block at the plate.
Bad baserunning Grandy.
(Anbyody think the chick in the Sienna chevy commercial is a bitch? The commercial is implying that mothers are ugly and that SHE’S much hotter than most Moms. What a bitch.)
She’s an actress……
No shit sherlock. I’m not being serious.
didn’t sound like sarcasm. but whatever
I thought the comment was ludicrous enough to be self explanatory.
I’d hit that shit while her kids watch.
Meh, it would have been nice for him to have scored, but whatevs. I’d prefer him to “lose” a run with less of a collision.
Still, that looked pretty awkward.
Loving Gardy’s ABs today
nice and gritty
He’s no Casey Kelly
yea wanted to add that into my post above. having good ABs to start the year. not giving up easy outs.
Granderson should have gone out of his way to take that bitch out.
Thatt is what happens when you dont slide…. where was the next hitter to tell Curtis to slode
Shoppach was blocking the plate, Granderson would’ve just broken his ankle sliding into him.
That is a ridiculous statement you are always supposed to slide in that situation…don’t be such a homer…
McCarver reminds me of an Einstein quote: The difference between genius and stupidity is genius has its limits.
That missed?
I know. >:(
I remember at one point in the World Series they were like “hey the Yankees are gonna lose because they have tall pitchers and the Phillies’ pitchers are short.” What?
mark T!!
In other news, I’m going to be late to work on Monday because some kid in Norway has asthma.
Wait a second…
Fucking ump. Bartlett was rung up.
Thank you Tex!!! Whew … that ump call had the makings of a bad result.
cmon zz!
What a play!!!!
Sexy Texy!
haha I thought I was the only one that called him this all the time.
UZR!!!
It’s high noon after watching that dive!
TEX!
Ugh. Gamecenter has that 0-2 right in the middle of the flipping plate.
Holy jumping hell Tex!
WOW Tex!
CC, GOLD WATCH PRONTO.
woo what a dive!
AND Teix’s UZR just fell even lower!!!!!

What made that play amazing is that the ball lost speed while getting from Bartlett’s bat to Teixeira’s glove.
/McCarver’d
Wait…you’re telling me the ball LOSES velocity while traveling?!?!?!
Was that as close as Gameday made it look?
you mean Cervelli’s hit? I thought it was out.
Yeah, I meant the Cervelli fly. Thanks.
damn kapler!
Wow, what a catch! Too bad Kapler can’t hit a baseball. He might be pretty good!
touche’ kapler
how long until the FJM guys start sending terribly baiting e-mails in to Joe/Tim?
I might send them pics of my wee wee.
But my wee wee looks like Wade Boogs.

They’re probably too busy rolling in their Parks and Rec money.
did he say fred couple’s cock?
Matsui is to Fred Couples as Tim Mccarver is to…..what? I’m very confused.
Please shut the fuck up, McCarver. You’re like my Grandpa I purposely leave to wander around Home Depot.
Joe Buck: We have ACTION! in St. Pete
I wonder what McCarver just did…
tight zone.
It’s like the ump is purposely trying to make CC work harder. He hasn’t gotten borderline calls.
Must hate Joe West
Do you think the guy who tailors CC’s parachute pants also does the tailoring on Derek’s plum-smuggler pants?
If so, that guy’s got range!
Hah. That’s a good question, actually.

How far did AJ take the no hitter against the rays last year? You guys remember that game?
I think it was 6. Didn’t he have one with the Mets through quite a few, as well?
Yea he destroyed the METS, I was thinkin AJ took his 1 out in the 7th.
Getting straight-up squeezed.
another close one
That ball was where?
Anybody else feel like CC is getting squeezed just a bit?
a ton.
seems that way. Do you pull him after this? He’ll need like…130 to finish out this game, and I just don’t know if it’s worth pushing it if he’s not going to finish it out.
It’s 4 strikes in Tampa. Brought to you by fox
Nasty.
Yeah that makes up for the other 20860486098 definite strikes that he missed.

Nice framing job by Cervelli

I’ve never heard that word before, I like it.
Hot Damn!
Ok, I was great yesterday, even with the beating, but today is a horrible time for zen baseball.
You know what’s weird about games like this? I stop caring about yankee AB’s around now.
Exactly.
oh me too…I hope they go 0-3 next inning to get back to CC haha
CHoP sighting!
Screw it let him go.
No. Out after 7. Not worth it.
Totally disagree. Leave him in there, it’s a no hitter. He’s had an extra day of rest, just yank him after 90 pitches next game.
no way. these opportunities dont come around too often.
CC over 100 pitches
CC’s thrown 17 this inning, and if this ump wasn’t squeezing him, he may have only thrown 10-12.
Yeah, he’s thrown at least 10 extra pitches due to some of these calls.
NICE play, AROD!

I jizzed before the play. should i still see my doctor?
No, you’re good.

and or maybachs
!!!!!!!
I just stood up and applauded.
When I saw the replay of the 2-2 pitch to BJ Upton, I noticed the plate looked a little dirty. Maybe the ump need to clean it off every now and then so he can see the corners.
It was definitely dirty. That’s one of the reasons I had trouble being able to accurately judge if they were strikes or not. Dust that shit off, moron!
omggggggggggggggggggggggggg!
Maybe I’m just lame but I’d rather have CC throw 110 pitches in 7 innings than get a no-hitter at 130-something in 9. If it’s July, maybe I see it a bit differently, but not on April 10th.
I see the logic, but a no hitter against the Rays is just badass
LAME
You’re just lame.
you’re lame
i understand where you’re coming from but do you really think 20 extra pitches for a guy like Sabathia is really that much. the guy is a work horse
Yeah, I do think it is. And I want to win the world series again…CC throwing 20 more pitches today doesn’t help that goal, but it _might_ hurt.
he pitched on short rest all of the playoffs last season and before that he did it for The Brewers too. I really don’t think 130 pitches for CC is too much
I am aware of CC’s resume, thanks.
However, it’s early April. Instead of having built up his stamina, he’s thrown ONE outing of over 100 pitches thus far.
Would he probably be fine? Yeah. Is there reason to think the risk right now is greater than it would be in October? A bit. Is there upside lower now than in October? Certainly.
So…
great job texy
time to heat up Teix
Im shocked every website that has any word on sports isn’t reporting CC’s performance
ESPN is, and I would be shocked if MLB.com doesn’t have something up.
oh yea they are all reporting now that the 7th is over haha
It would be great if A-Rod destroys this next pitch.
Tex = Heating Up
There should be a Gold Watch count on the side bar.
A-Rod – 1
Teixeira – 1
how in the world was that a strike? It was in the dirt!!!
Also, very very very SSS, but A-Rod’s looked really good at D so far this season.
definitely looks like hes moving around easily on D
that was a strike but the ones in the top of the inning werent?
“You can’t figure baseball, don’t even try”
you know who doesn’t bitch about having work more than three hours?
robots
+1 lol
i love it when A-Rod flips the bat like that after a hit
Here’s that dialogue:
A-Rod “Really, that’s a strike.”
Ump: “Yup”
A-Rod (chuckling): “Maybe you should call that for CC sometime.”
Encore from Robi!?
TEX and AROD back to back
LOL@ the “Let’s go Yankees” chant. Almost sounds like there’s more Yankee fans at the Trop tonight than Rays fans
“Yankees suck” chant last night, “Lets go Yankees chant today.” Love those die-hard Ray fans filling up their stadium.
I bet there are TONS of fairweather fans. There were loud “Yankees Suck” chants yesterday and just now we heard cheers for the Yankees that were again quite loud.
I know the attendance is split with fans of both teams but doesn’t that just seem weird?
Tim McCarver’s math skills
2010 – 1998 = 13 years
Now I realize how little I missed Dumb and Dumber this offseason.
Zack, Ryan and I basically said the same thing, oh reader. So just choose to read one of the comments. It’ll save you time.
Typical Cano RISP luck
I think just about everyone from my high school in NYC lives in Florida now. I know tons of NYers in FL
He was being haunted by the ghost of Carl Everett
man swisher has been a killah for my fantasy team
Rajai Davis and Edgar Renteria have saved my week. Monster weeks for them.
Edgar Renteria is currently like the frontrunner for NL MVP. AL? Vernon Wells.
The humor is not lost on me.
Teixeira: base-clogger
also, I don’t think there are necessarily fairweather Rays fans at the Trop, I just think there are a lot of fans of both teams at this game, but the dome thing makes everything sound so amplified. Last night the Yankee fans didn’t have much to cheer about after the, what, fourth?
WOO GRANDERSON AGAINST A LEFTY!!!!
top 5 in baseball
He is incredibly slow. I know people whined about NJ but I feel like Tex is way slower. Not that it matters because he’s like really really good at baseball.
tried staying away but this is too fucking exciting… Cmon CC… Throw that shit!!!!!
are we having fun yet
YES!!!
Grander-slam?
I’ll settle for a grander-single.
haha in the brewers cards game, the announcers just said if CC finishes it he will be owing TEX and AROD some Rolexes
I feel like at their paygrade, you have to shoot even hire. Like Ferrari level.
*higher
time for a granderslam
or grandersingle
a GRANDERSLAM would be sick
looks like we have a carousel going on
5-0
off a lefty
nice Grandy. against a sidearm throwing lefty too.
What????? Granderson with a hit vs a LHP?? Impossible….
its just not fair
Nice job Grandy!
BUT I THOUGHT GRANDERSON COULDN’T HIT TEH LEFT-HANDED PITCHING!!!!!!!!!!
Oohhhh isn’t he grand. Don’t worry it will catch on.
nice knock off the lefty
The Grandy Man Can…hit lefties
i like that one. Send it over to 880am.
Hey there’s another AJ now. This is awkward.
Slightly awkward. We should find a way to distinguish ourselves, which I just did. If your last name ends in a M, then we’re really stuck.
With the sacks jammed? Just say bases loaded.
wait til they blast it open on someone’s granny
If Gardner walks with the bases loaded, I will laugh histerically
If Mo can do it against an all-star closer. But Mo can do anything.
yeah I’m sorry I don’t follow your logic.
what a trade to get Granderson…and CC is getting plenty of rest this inning
I don’t think it works that way…
lol @ teh ump
You think Winn is coming in for Swisher in the bottom of the 8th?
Jupiter’s C*ck!!
/Starz’ Spartacus Reference
this strikezone it horrible
everytime Gardner sees 5 or more pitches in an AB its considered girtty
gritty* sry
damn that was very close for the gritster
A-Rod hasn’t ducked so quickly since he last saw Cynthia.
hahahahaha IETCVVVVM
Very niiiiiiiice.
good job gritster
getting the run scored 6-0
ill take that from Gardner. another good AB this game.
God I love fast people
That helmet looks way too big for Cervelli.
isn’t it the consussion helmet? i thought he had to wear one for getting beaned in ST
yup, it is.
If CC throws a no-hitter to Cervelli, do we get the same drama as last year, when Molina had to exclusively throw to Molina?
Sorry, meant Burnett.
Maybe for one more start. I doubt it though.
To be honest? Probably. Especially if he has a really bad start with Jorge next time out.
Molina = Bugs Bunny
RGI!!!
Run gritted in
great term..this is the stat we should use to judge Gardner
damn, business, we are in it
that was not a pop fly Tim
FRANKIE!
WHERE’S TEH OFFENSE?!??!?!
Vaya Cervelli!
Uh oh. Jorge looks worried.
Frankie will wake up with a bloody horse’s head in his bed tomorrow
You guys remember last night? This is like the complete opposite.
You guys remember last night?
no
OK, time to get the ball back to ZZ.
Ha, Cervelli’s cool too. This is such a likable team
frankie’s reaction on 2b made my wife go “awwww”
This long Top of the 8th can not be a good thing for CC.
I was thinking the same thing…The best thing for him would be a nice quick inning, but then again an 8-0 ass kicking of the Rays, a team everyone deep throats 10x a day, is awesome.
man i love this team. even the backup catcher is clutch money
frankie!
Gardner is on right now. I think it’s getting to the point where you have him play 9 innings a day, every day, until he starts to suck.
especially when the alternative is Marcus Thames…I would rather have 0-4 from Gardner as long as they are solid ABs with his defense.
especially since any time he gets on base hes a threat to run and make things happen. lose that and the defense when Thames plays.
CC’s going to finish. He’s gotten a shit ton of rest this half.
Wow, A-Rod is trending on Twitter.
I can’t wait for the “Posada can’t catch teh CC!111!” rants
Yay Gazoo! I wants that helmet
back to work son!
These Yankees are an embarrassment! We’ll never finish this game on time with play like that!
Jeter grounded out because he plays the game the right way
Let’s do this CC!!!!!! In CC Sabathis we trust.
long inning help or hurt cc? or doesn’t matter.
best defense the Yankees can have on the field.
holy crap!
CANO!
magic in the air!
5 more baby
holy hell. dont throw out your bare hand like that again CC. good play by Robbie picking it up
Isn’t Cano supposed to be lazy?
that’s why he needed cc’s help
Stop talking about “destiny” FOX, you’re giving me a hernia!!!
Why do the pitchers always touch easy ground balls?
there’s soooo little time to actually think about it it’s just a reaction
The reaction should be to not stick your pitching hand out at a sharp grounder.
my heart can not take this
I know this is crazy shit
great play by cano
OMG. hope his hand is ok.
ROLEX WATCH watch
Tex 1
A rod 1
Cano 1
QFT
CANO is insane
Go Cano!
CAN YOU GIVE THE GUY A FUCKING CALL??
3 easy web gems for tonight
OMG this is intense
DAMN! It almost looked like Joe was happy with that hit
didnt he throw a no hiter with the brewers?
I don’t remember that.
No, they tried to get it called a no-hitter on an error but it didn’t go through.
technically no, but he should have gotten the no-no because he made an error that was called a hit
I disagree. It was the right call. The runner would have been safe either way.
So how many of us are superstitious?
Only the feeble-minded.
EXCUSE ME???
Says ancient good luck chant, rubs rabbit’s foot.
man i hope ZZ can finish this one
4 more outs
God damnit.
fuck
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
shit. great job by CC though.
Awwwwww
Good job CC!!!
oh man that sucked
great job CC
he deserves the standing O
Goddamn it
oh well, great game big guy
Fucking Shoppach. I hate him now.
Dropped from all fantasy teams
I will boo him every time I see him
poop
nooooooooooooo
Marcus Thames woulda dove.
and missed
And it would have been a triple.
In fact, because Marcus Thames is so bad, somehow TWO RUNS would have scored.
Don’t challenge me on that math, either. It would have happened.
=’(
Poor CC.
BOO KELLY SHOPPACH
YAY LONG TERM PITCHING STAFF MANAGEMENT
Well at least he’s not throwing 140 pitches in his second start.
THIS.
He was on pace for like 120, not 140. At least, it seemed that way too me.
He was at 111 (I think) when he left the game. Even if we put it at 10-15 pitches, I still would like to proceed on the side of caution. CC pitched an outrageous amount of innings last year deep into the Fall. He didn’t get much work in over the Spring. Having him throw 120+ pitches in the second start of the year just seems silly to me. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
I know I sound like I’m no fun or whatever, but the goal is to win the World Series. Having Sabathia throw that many pitches this early I don’t think increases our chances of reaching that goal. If anything, it could be a real detriment when you factor his off-season and how many he threw last year. That’s probably the last guy on this team you want getting injured.
If this outing had happened in even early May I’d have said, “Yeah, go for 120-135 pitches. Fine.” But it’s too early.
JMO. I see the other side, too.
Ahh, too bad. Hell of a game he pitched, though.
Damn you, Kelly Shoppach!
standing O for CC
Kelly Shoppach!?!?!? Are you kidding me?!?!?!?
damn too bad. great game by CC though.
Fuck myself!!!!
Fuck Shoppach
+52
i know it doesnt matter to him, but it’s awesome to see that response from a “away” crowd.
WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Ah frick… oh well, great game by CC anyway!
If brett can’t make it, nobody can!
DAMN!
I’ve been afraid to post since I first came home and saw what was up, not wanting to jinx it.
And, yes, I know jinxes don’t exist, etc. etc.
Ahhh sh*t. At least it was a clean hit.
Anybody think he might have tired a bit due to the extra pitches he had to throw because the ump wouldn’t give the high strike, or several low strike?
*low strikes
Perhaps it was the long inning off he had when we scored all those runs?
Or both. Or neither. Who knows?
great performance cc.
all that matters are winning and staying healthy
True. But a no-no would have been sweet
this.
also I still want that Andy Pettitte perfect game against the Os ;_;
I’m still pissed at Hairston for that.
He only partially made up for that, scoring the winning run in that playoof game last year.
Damn typos.
*playoff
Ugh me too. I like JHJ because he seems like a nice guy but SERIOUSLY.
I was in London, in a hotel room, listening to the radio broadcast @ 3AM…. and I cried. I wanted it for Andy sooooooo bad.
great start for DROB lol
It’s a good thing the no no was broken up, because it would have been awkward for Giradi to bring in Pena for Jeter in the 9th…
::Ducks and runs::
Standing Os by away teams make me get all teary-eyed.
the ump had a terrible zone the whole day
oh yea, but its the American Leagues top 2 teams that are the disgrace. MLB Umpiring has been nothing short of embarrassing since the playoffs last year.
With a good zone CC could have had a perfect fucking game. You think he’d get a bit tired with all those extra pitches.
I don’t care how the crowd reacted. If someone threw a perfect game against the Yanks I’d boo till my throat was sore.
I concur
If a team throws a perfect game against this Yankee team I would deem it the greatest pitching performance in 20 years.
Remember how many Yankee fans are in Tampa.
man I am in love with this team…Its crazy, 1 to 25, its just beastly.
1 to 24. I’m not including sergio Mitre.
haha I cannot argue with that..I tried my best to forget he was there, and I was dreaming of Melancon. FUCK
1-24. Thames. (I actually see value in Mitre.)
+24
and Thames? I feel like everyone hates Thames
1 to 23. Thames too.
ok so now I realize I was wrong..I guess I was trying to point out my love for cervelli. Thames sucks, hes really becoming the new Betemit.
Betamit was more versatile (at sucking)
AND he brought back Swish. No way in hell we get any return at all ever on Thames
Johnny Damon wouldve caught that ball!!!! lol
Whatevs. We’re drubbing the Rays. Feels good!
Jupiter’s C*ck!!
/Starz’ Spartacus Reference
I say we build on this guy’s 20 ERA
CIn a keeper league I was just offered Billingsly Beckett Holliday and Chapman for The Horse who is CC, Garza, and Gardner. What do you think? Fair Deal?
I would do it for now and the future…Obviously CC and Garza are way better than Bills and Beckett, but damn Holliday for Gardy?? and You get Chapman for nothing? I pull trigger no doubt, unless you think Gardner will maintain that .450 batting average.
I’d do it. Billingsly, Beckett, Holliday >> CC, Garza Gardner
Chapman is a free lottery ticket
i would take it, but prolly cuz i’m on drugs
@OldHossRadbourn: Were I hurlin’ a no-no and a player like K. Shoppach broke it up, I would hit the next 3 batters then shoot Shoppach as he crossed home.
http://twitter.com/OldHossRadb.....1958057971
This guy is pure money.
whoever that really is, if you’re reading this, you rule.
I would love that

Nick Johnson is an advanced-stat-padder
lol wut
also Teixeira’s hair actually looks okay now.
I am not digging the hair…
Can someone please explain the Teixeira play?
ball hit off the wall, Nick Johnson thought Crawford caught it? and stood on 2B while Teixeira ran and got caught off 1B. I think that’s what happened.
Cano with the RISP!!!!
I believe that, if the ball had bounced off of carl himself, it would have been a catch. Like, if it bounded into and out of his glove, and then he caught it on the fly.
Yeah, I think maybe NJ thought the ball hit off Crawford’s glove instead of off the wall, so when it popped up in the air and Crawford caught it before it hit the ground, NJ thought it was an out.
Or he just didn’t see it well at all?
Ball bounced vertically off the top of wall, crawford caught it in the air and threw it back in. NJ couldn’t tell if it was a catch or not (it wasn’t) so he was standing on 2nd and started heading back to 1st. Tex rounded 1st and only saw NJ when he was halfway between the bases, and got run down.
This is what I interpreted from that:
Johnson thought that Tex homered, and so stopped at second. Teixeira was telling Johnson that the ball bounced off the wall, but the ball came to the infield and Tex got caught in the rundown. Some stupid baserunning right there.
No, I think NJ thought it might have been a catch, which is why he stopped and started back to 1st. And, it could have been a catch.
He hit the ball to the LF field wall, where it bounced directly up and dropped down and Carl Crawford caught it. Nick Johnson stayed at 2nd because he thought it was caught and Tex got caught going for returning to 1st from 2nd after he realized NJ was standing on the bag and wasn’t moving to 3rd.
A-ROD and TEX 5-8 = Lots of wins
cano delivers like UPS
Cano strikes again with RISP!
Ribbie!
Robbie for MVP
Ribbie for MVP!!!!
Fixed
Sending NJ there is a recipe for a DL stint.
Kinda what I was thinking. Pinch running for NJ in the 9th inning of a blow-out should be at the fore-front of Joe G.’s mind.
nick johnson sliding, almost as white knuckling as taking a no hitter into the eighth
hahahaha well done
part of me was thinking: don’t send him! it’s a blow-out!
I hope Randy Winn hits a triple
that was almost a triple
if robbie gets a hit with risp but the game is a blow out, is he still lazy and unclutch?
Yes
Robbie is lazy no matter what, he can’t change the fact that he is Dominican.
I knew Robbie would be gold in the 5th spot, even after last year.
could we get a gritslam!!??!!
It might make me cry
lolz
another gritty AB (5 or more pitches)
DONE
an inside the park gritslam would make me cackle with glee and then weep with joy
It would make JASIMP.
make me*
How many runs would a lineup of 9 Brett Gardners score in a full season?
7.
stat padders
That’s a looootta pitches o_O
GRIT WALK!!!!!
Jeeeez I want to go to bed! HURRY UP
wow this is hilarious
cervelli has a chance at the GS
No, it’s a DISGRACE! The Yankees should be swinging more at pitches outside the strike zone so that the poor, fat umps can hit the buffet!
brett gardner: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCaodprvgbg
at 1:45
I didn’t know Bugs used PEDs
now my whole childhood is ruined! Does that mean the roadrunner was too?
Papi’s at 2:10
A Cervelli grand slam would just make this incredible.
Look at Grit, taking a strike with a 9-0 lead in the 9th when the game has gone over 3 hours. Embarrasing and pathetic.
See, clearly Cervelli is the only guy who respects baseball.
/Joe West’d
well that’s ok
great job by the yanks offense
Nice of Frankie to do the kid a favour there.
Today I saw Jeff Francoeur walk on four pitches. Therefore, a Gardner grand slam would have been only the second most surprising thing of the day.
This team will be so much fun to watch this season
any chance d-rob let’s the rays get a couple hits, just to lift their spirits a little? Anyone remember last year when Buehrle pitched the perfect game against them? That’s gotta suck for them.
DRob working on that K rate
Well that was fun!
Yo Yankees. That was highly enjoyable. If you could have like, eh, 150 or so more games like that, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
Love,
bexy
Now to watch Zack attack rip through the sox and I’ll sleep happily ever after.
CC is the man!
Nothing beats a dominant game on a Saturday afternoon…makes the weekend so much more fun.
