Garcia’s injury casts a cloud over Opening Night

By

Two links to pass along before we get started. First, Baseball America put together a list of the youngest players in each league, but for whatever reason they forgot about Jesus Montero. His birthday is listed as November 28th, 1989, which should make him the youngest player in the Triple-A International League by more than two months. Further down the ladder you have Manny Banuelos, who is the youngest player in the High-A Florida State League by a good seven months.

Second, Padres executive vice president Paul DePodesta fired off a blog post about losing Chad Huffman on waivers to the Yanks. He throws some praise the player’s way.

And now, what you’ve waited all winter for. As per Opening Day tradition, you get the full lineups…

Triple-A Scranton (1-0 win over Buffalo)
Kevin Russo, 3B: 1 for 3, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 E (fielding)
Reegie Corona, 2B: 0 for 4, 2 K
Juan Miranda, 1B: 1 for 3, 1 2B, 1 BB, 1 K – he kills this league
David Winfree, RF: 1 for 3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K – first homer of the season in the farm system
Jon Weber, DH: 1 for 3
Jesus Montero, C: 1 for 3, 1 2B - doubled in his first Triple-A plate appearance
Colin Curtis, LF: 0 for 3, 1 K
Eduardo Nunez, SS: 0 for 3
Greg Golson, CF: 0 for 3
Ivan Nova, SP: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 2-4 GB/FB – 34 of 49 pitches were strikes (69.4%) … left the game after a lengthy rain delay … rock solid season debut, if he keeps it up, he’ll be the first guy called up when the big league team needs a starter
Mark Melancon: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 5-0 GB/FB – 16 of 23 pitches were strikes (69.6%) … same as he always was
Boone Logan: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 2-0 GB/FB - 18 of 22 pitches were strikes (81.8%) … damn yo
Jon Albaladejo: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 0-1 GB/FB – 7 of 12 pitches were strikes (58.3%)

Double-A Trenton (4-0 win over Erie)
Austin Krum, CF: 1 for 4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI
David Adams, 2B: 1 for 4
Austin Romine, C: 1 for 4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K
Brandon Laird, 3B: 2 for 4, 1 R, 1 K – he started out slow last year, so hopefully he stays consistent all year in 2010
Damon Sublett, LF: 0 for 3, 1 BB, 1 K
Reid Gorecki, DH: 0 for 3, 1 RBI, 1 BB – man, this guy got the shaft … he hit .286-.315-.464 in Triple-A last year!
Kevin Smith, 1B: 0 for 4, 2 K
Dan Brewer, RF: 0 for 2, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
Luis Nunez, SS: 1 for 3, 1 R, 1 K, 1 E (throwing)
Chris Garcia, SP: 5.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HB, 8-5 GB/FB – 48 of 69 pitches were strikes (69.6%) … Mike Ashmore said he was at 89-92 with the fastball … he left the game in the middle of an at-bat with elbow soreness, and it’s pretty serious … sigh
Wilkins Arias: 1.1 IP, zeroes, 2-2 GB/FB
Noel Castillo: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 2-0 GB/FB – he’s got a great arm, just a little wild at times
Grant Duff: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 1-0 GB/FB – can he build on last year’s breakout?

High-A Tampa (4-0 win over Lakeland)
Abe Almonte, LF: 2 for 4, 2 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 K – hopefully he picks up where he left off last year, because he finished the year en fuego
Jose Pirela, SS: 3 for 4, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 RBI, 1 SB
Corban Joseph, 2B: 1 for 4, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 CS
Bradley Suttle, 1B: 0 for 4 – first official game in 21 months
Neil Medchill, RF: 0 for 2, 2 BB
Melky Mesa, CF: 0 for 4
Trent Lockwood, 1B: 0 for 4 – who?
Mitch Abeita, C: 2 for 3, 1 R, 1 2B - poor guy is stuck in the wrong organization for fringy catching prospects
Myron Leslie, DH: 1 for 3, 1 R, 2 K
Hector Noesi, SP: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 5-6 GB/FB – fantastic start for a guy that could climb the ladder pretty quickly this year … I hesitate to call him a sleeper, but he’s one guy that I don’t think gets enough attention
Brandon Braboy: 3 IP, zeroes, 3 K, 3-3 GB/FB – now that’s what you call a save

Low-A Charleston (5-2 win over Lexington)
Jimmy Paredes, 2B: 0 for 4, 1 K, 2 SB - he reached on an error, then stole second & third
DeAngelo Mack, LF: 0 for 3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SB – I guess he won’t be giving CF a try after all
Zoilo Almonte, CF: 1 for 3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 CS – threw a runner out at second
Luke Murton, 1B: 1 for 4, 1 R, 3 K – Matt’s brother should crush this level
Rob Lyerly, 3B: 3 for 4, 1 R, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 1 K – he might be the org’s best power prospect after Montero
Kyle Higashioka, C: 0 for 4, 1 K
Taylor Grote, RF: 2 for 3, 1 RBI, 1 K
Garrison Lassiter, DH: 1 for 3, 1 K
Kelvin Perez, SS: 0 for 3, 1 E (throwing)
Schaeffer Hall, SP: 6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 9-4 GB/FB – 2009 25th rounder made just two starts for Short Season Staten Island last year due to injury
Ronny Marte: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 2-0 GB/FB
Francisco Rondon: 1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 0-1 GB/FB
Ryan Flannery: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1-1 GB/FB – last year’s workhorse closer in Staten Island

Unfortunately, 2009 first rounder Slade Heathcott is starting his season in Extended Spring Training. Apparently his spring was only so-so. Corban Joseph started the season in ExST just last year, but made his way to Charleston in early May and finished the season as one of the organization’s top prospects, so don’t freak out.

oh Mr. Garcia, here we go again

    • chriso says:

Baseball America has demonstrated a real bias against the Yankees’ organization for years. I’m not surprised they didn’t mention Jesus Montero as the youngest guy in his league. Two seasons ago, they called him a “disappointment.” No Yankees’ fan should ever rely on BA for information about Yankees’ prospects. It’d be like relying on Rupert Murdoch for news about President Obama.

  2. System Sweep!!!

Safely on the road to Eight Rings at Eight Levels!!

  3. Jake H says:

Loving me some DOTF. JR Murphy looked good from reports I heard too. Hopefully EST will be good for Slade.

  4. Starting Pitching tonight: 22.2IP 10H 0R 2BB 17K. PWNAGE!!

  5. I am just shocked BA would drop the ball. Shocked, I tell you!

My sleeper rebound of the year: Bradley Suttle

  6. “Slade Heathcott is starting his season in Extended Spring Training. Apparently his spring was only so-so.”

Based on reports I read Slade was actually one of the most impressive players in minor league ST. He was hitting for average and power as well as showing off his wheels on D and legging out several bunts for hits. It seems to me like more of a precautionary measure on the Yanks part that a slight on Slade’s play so far.

  7. JobaWockeeZ says:

At least good performance from Nova and Noesi gives us some positives.

  8. Adam B says:

Is Carmen Angellini gone for good?

  9. crawdaddy says:

Where do you hear Heathcott was only so-so this spring because that’s the opposite of anything I heard about his spring.

  10. Dirty Pena says:

    Bradley Suttle….what?

  11. gxpanos says:

Nice. Don’t have to take the jump to see The Jesus anymore. Last year I’d go down and check him, and then start back at the top.

Thanks to The Jesus, I’m more efficient!

  12. I thought Garcia was going to get hurt, but I didn’t think it would take just one game. Jesus.

  13. Reggie C. says:

I’m gonna bet that David Adams out hits Austin Romine. Expecting a big year out of Adams who turned it on big time in the second half (’09).

    • Meh, we need to remember that Adams will be 23 starting in AA, Romine will be 21. That’s a big difference, so I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect that he’ll hit better. That said, Romine is no slouch and he profiles to have plus-defense with good pop. Adams has a lower ceiling.

  14. pat says:

Mike, you think Lyerly has more pop than Medchill?

    • Stephen says:

Medchill, Mesa, Heathcott, Miranda, and maybe one other that I am missing I thought had better power. Lyerly is alright, but I can’t call it better than them.

  15. I was at the Trenton game tonight and took a ton of pictures. I’ll post a bunch tomorrow night.

  16. Good news for Mets fans…Ike Davis went 3-4 in the game against Scranton (but did K to end the game).

    • Also, Chris Carter, the player whose career the Yankees ruined last year when they claimed him on waivers, was 1-3. Good to see that he’s rebounding from that emotional and physical trauma.

    • Reggie C. says:

Ike Davis could probably out hit Fernando Tatis (Mets current 1B) at this point. I didnt realize till now that Daniel Murphy hasn’t played yet, and not so sure when he will.

F-Mart put up an 0-fer. Good debut indeed for the Scranton pitching staff.

      • Rob Has No Innings Limit says:

Murphy’s on the DL so it’s not as if he suckified himself out of a starting spot.

Though that’s not to say he wouldn’t do that anyway if he were healthy.

        • Zack says:

Murphy was hitting .196 this spring, the only reason he didnt suck his way out of the starting spot was because his competition was Mike Jacobs and Tatis.

Davis had a nice spring before he got sent down, he had only 233 PA at AA. And if you look at fangraphs, they pointed out his sub .700 OPS against LHP last year, his .381 BABIP, and 29% K rate- he has work to do so no reason to rush him like they are doing with Mejia.

  17. Jobamania says:

    no jorge vazquez?

  18. Bra'tac says:

    Trent Lockwood, 1B
Trent Lockwood (born May 5, 1986 in Waco, Texas) is a first baseman in the New York Yankees organization.

Lockwood attended Groesbeck High School in Groesbeck, Texas. He attended Hill College before transferring to the University of Texas at San Antonio.

    Lockwood was not drafted.
He began his professional career in independent leagues. In 2008, he played for the Bay Area Toros of the Continental Baseball League and the El Paso Diablos of the American Association. In 2009, he played for the Amarillo Dillas of United League Baseball. With the Dillas, the 6’4 235-pound first baseman was named the United League’s 2009 Rookie of the Year.

In the winter of 2009, Lockwood played for the Lake County Black Bears of the Florida Winter Baseball League, prior to the league suspending operations. [11]

In 2010, the Yankees purchased Lockwood’s contract from the Dillas.

  19. Just so you guys know, I had a hell of a long day and was dead ass tired. Reason I stayed awake? DOTF. Enough said.

  20. Reggie C. says:

Had IPK started in Scranton tonight he might’ve racked up 10 Ks before the rain delay. I congratulate the former Yankees farm hand for a solid NL debut (5 ip, 3 er, 8 Ks).

  21. Baseballnation says:

Chris Garcia: “I’m concerned, of course. It just keeps happening. It keeps reoccuring. I don’t want to get too concerned, because it could be something not that serious, like a little scar tissue or something like that.”

Kid, If you broke a nail I’d be worrying because you’d probably hiut the DL for that for 4 months and continue to waste time of actual developement.

Truthfully, pitching is brutal on the arm and elbows, and the fact is, no mater how good your stuff is, everyone is not physically able to withstand that kind of punishment.

  22. Rob Has No Innings Limit says:

Anybody have anything on Brackman? I notice the Brackman Watch is no more. 24 is pretty old to still be in the lower levels, but it’s not like he was that far off from being ML-ready before injuries robbed him of a year of development and innings. If he’s rediscovered his mojo this season, how soon could we see him? There’s still hope, no?

    • Dirty Pena says:

I think best case scenario (and boy do I mean best) is that he’s a September call up this year. More likely? He’s a September call up next year. Unless we suffer some injuries to the bullpen, we could rush him through the minors this year, transition him to a starter in 2011, let him start in 2012, and then make him a setup guy in 2013. That works, right?

      Right?

      • JobaWockeeZ says:

At this point I wouldn’t be surprised if every top starting prospect just went into the bullpen from now on.

    • chriso says:

Plenty of hope for Brackman. Remember, he didn’t throw his first professional pitch until he was 23. The yanks knew when they signed him that he was going to need surgery. Same with Dellin Betances (another guy I wouldn’t give up on).

  23. Joey says:

    I (heart) DotF!

    Although I do miss DotFortenberry…

  24. YankeesJunkie says:

It was nice to see all the starting pitchers do well for the Yankees farm teams on opening day, aside from the Garcia injury. It is just nice to have MILB back because I love checking out the stats for a few minutes after the Yankess game. I am really looking forward to see how guys like Banuelos, Brackman, and Jose Ramirez develop in the lower leagues especially the first two to see how they adjust to strong competition. My “sleeper” prospect of the year is going to be Jairo Heredia, but that I don’t think is that big of a stretch.

On a lighter note, I was working at a Omaha Royals game and I saw that Wilson Betemit was the #3 hitter in the lineup for the O-Royals. Remember when the Yankees stole Swisher for Betemit and Marquez. It brights up my day.

  25. Drew says:

“It was some soreness in the elbow. It was pretty serious.”

“It’s kind of like the same pain I had before (when he missed the second half of last year).”

    Not good. Bummer.

  26. larryf says:

and Montero’s defense? Did he call his own game? Did they shake him off alot? Did anyone steal on him? Inquiring minds want to know…..

    • Bill says:

Well he caught a shutout in which 4 different pitchers threw. No one even attempted to steal a base and there were no PB or WP. Based on that you’d have to assume his defense was at least decent.

  27. theyankeewarrior says:

Where is the Montero watch on the side bar?

  28. CountryClub says:

Man, Garcia. It would be funny if it wasn’t so sad. I really feel bad for that kid.

  29. With Park and Aceves able to give you length, Sergio Mitre really serves no role on this team (except mop up). Might it not be better to have him starting every 5th day in AAA, and replace him on the roster with Logan? Then again, maybe the last thing Girardi needs is another LOOGY with whom to play?

  30. Phil says:

Where is Kelvin DeLeon? I know he is on Charleston but is he hurt?
