Open Thread: Another win

Photo Credit: Frank Franklin II, AP

The Yankees won again this afternoon, and it feels like the second half of last year all over again. The starters are pitching well and the lineup is (for the most part) clicking. Mark Teixeira is still mired in his April slump, though he did pick up an infield single today. All four of his hits this season have come on Saturday’s, which means nothing but I guess is fine open thread fodder.

Anyway, here’s your open thread for the evening. You’ve got both playoff hockey and basketball on tonight, plus the Tigers and Mariners are on MLB Network. Talk about whatever you please, just be cool.

Categories : Open Thread

  1. 1) Yankees win

    2) I used my gift card for B+N so well that I stopped only because I couldn’t carry any more–and I still have money left on the card.

Life is good, and Nick Johnson is the OBP Jesus.

  2. bexarama says:

I just got home in time to find out Texas’ starter didn’t make it past the third, A-Rod homered, and Teixeira somehow had an infield hit. Plus, NJ walked with the bases loaded cuz he’s not a real man or something. Life is good :)

  3. Brad Toughy says:

Jamie Garcia a pretty nice fantasy pickup this week.

My pitching is ridiculously awesome, but my hitting could use some help.

  4. Dear Jim Johnson,

    Thank you for sucking tonight.

    My fantasy team

  5. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

CB Bucknor umping the Mets game, in which they are getting 1 hitted through 10 innings. Good stuff, I do not feel sorry for the Mets at all.

  6. radnom says:

    Screw “Party in the USA”.

should be Nick Johnson’s intro music.

  7. T-Dubs says:

UP on Blu Ray is amazing. Just FYI.

  8. Biggest early season MLB surprise so far is….

    • bexarama says:

the team with the biggest lead in its division? Oakland

    • Jose says:

      Team: Oakland
      Player: Vernon Wells

    • radnom says:

Too early. Not even that many surprises – looking at the division leaders the only one that would really blow my mind if they were in 1st at the end of the year is Oakland. Most of the favorites are out in front of their respective divisions.

As for players – think its too early for that too. No one really stands out, maybe Cruz if he can pull a Chris Shelton and keep it up another week.

    • Brad Toughy says:

Nationals over .500 eleven games in might be up there. But other than some hot individual starts (Vernon Wells, Alex Gonzalez, Pudge) there hasn’t been much that’s overly surprised me.

Even the A’s are understandable because they have got some great young pitching that, if they pitch well, the A’s can contend the whole year.

  9. Mike Axisa says:

Alex Cora just dove into the stands after the ball and fucked some lady up. Wow.

  10. What happens to fantasy players in this delayed BOS-TB game?

Do the stats count? For yesterday or today?

  11. countryclub says:

Has anybody heard anything on why Jeter came out after the 7th? I assume it was just to give him a blow in a 7-0 game, but i havent seen anything one way or the other from the beat writers.

  12. Gameday and At Bat are all messed up for the Rays/Red Sox continued game. Seems to only be updating at the end of the inning.

  13. WIlliam says:

What’s the official RAB stance on the Sox-Rays game? We all hate the Sox, but the Rays are ahead of them right now, and might have the better team.

    • I want Brignac to do well and the two teams to bludgeon each other to death.

    • Brad Toughy says:

I actually don’t mind the Rays at all. I kinda like them. So for me, it’s an easy choice to root against Boston here. As long as the Yankees beat Tampa Bay, I have no problem pulling for them.

      • bexarama says:

this. There are some players on the Rays I dislike but I like far more and I want to see Boston just collapse this year. It’d bring me much joy.

  14. Alex S says:

I was offered Jon Lester and Prince Fielder for Albert Pujols and Jonathan Sanchez(My players). what should i do? 10 team H2H league

  15. Brad Toughy says:

So Jonathan Papelbon’s wife had a kid today, named Gunner.

Starting off behind because of that ridiculous name, hopefully the kid get his looks from the mother’s side. Although she’s kinda weird looking as it is.

  16. Lol, Mets inning ended because of a caught stealing.

  17. Yo, Cueto, you’re killing my fantasy team.

  18. WIlliam says:

Longoria just seriously messed up. He could have gotten a dp, now it’s bases loaded with 0 outs.

  19. vin says:

Anyone see Joe Maddon carry a glove when he went out for the pitching change? Not sure what that’s about.

  20. Brooklyn Ed says:

After seeing MLB teams commericals like this:

    and this:

    and this:

    and this:

….makes me wonder how come the Yanks don’t make commericals?

  21. The Mets just got their second hit of the game.

    In the 12th.

  22. Brooklyn Ed says:

After seeing MLB teams commericals like this, and this, and this:, and this:….makes me wonder how come the Yanks don’t make commericals?

  23. whozat says:

After watching several episodes of Torchwood and Dr. Who, I have concluded that “TV hot” women in England are less attractive than women I see on the street in the financial district of san francisco. And that the BBC seems to have only about $300 to spend on every show it makes. Per season. Seriously, Star Trek: The Next Generation had better special effects than these in 1992.

  24. bexarama says:

I’m watching the repeat of the game from today because I missed it but wowwww Rangers defense. Wow.

  25. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    Pat the Bat!!!!

  26. Pat “The Bat”.

    (kind of..)

  27. Alex S says:

damn these Mets pitchers won’t throw Albert a strike!

  28. daniel aka bryce harper says:

heres a fruitless hypothetical. pujols for ryan howard and ja happ. which team says no?

  29. In 20 years, who has more walks? Pujols or Bonds?

  30. I will laugh my ass off if the pitcher has a walkoff single.

  31. Ben Zobrist’s nickname is “Zorilla”. How original.

  32. Brad Toughy says:

Chip Carey just announced that Clint Barmes “thumped” a double in his first at-bat.

  33. Holy bejaysus, Mets/Cardinals, SOMEONE SCORE ALREADY

  34. bexarama says:

    Rays win wooooo

Wow, Red Sox had bases loaded nobody out in extras and couldn’t score? FAIL!!!!

  35. Zobrist was playing Right Center on that play.

  36. AndrewYF says:

Wow, what an embarrassingly bad loss for the Sox.

  37. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

What’s better than one red sox loss in one night?

TWO red sox losses in one night! Let’s go Rats!

  38. bexarama says:

you know the game (Cards/Mets) has gone really long when: pitchers are pinch-running. Also I fear for John Maine’s health and want to buy him a milkshake.

    • Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Yeah, this is a serious health hazard for the Mets, overexposure to the field and vigorous activity definitely is not good for them.

      • bexarama says:

Seriously, they showed video of him from 2008 and he looked at least thirty pounds heavier. And he wasn’t heavy, he was just built. Now he’s scary skinny.

  39. Alex S says:

So what time does the new Sox/ Rays game start?

  40. YankeeScribe says:

    Quote of the week:
“The rest of the American League has as much chance of stopping the Yankees as Oprah has of winning the New York Marathon.”

    - Mike Celizic

  41. Kelvin Perez is pwning in Charleston.

  42. bexarama says:

I’ve been seeing players on other teams get their various hardware (Gold Gloves and Silver Sluggers). Do the Yankees have any sort of mini-ceremony for that?

Odds that Pujols pitches for the Cards before this game is over?

    • Brad Toughy says:

As cool as that would be, doesn’t he have an elbow issue on the backburner? Herd to see the Cards risk something like that against the Mets.

      • bexarama says:

I forgot about that. Yes, he does. So… yeah, I can’t see them risking their prized asset by having him pitch. It was mostly a joke anyway ;).

Cards pitcher getting squeezed right now, you’d think they’d expand the strike zone in the freakin’ 14th

    • bexarama says:

also, I didn’t know that Ortiz was up with nobody out and the bases loaded in extras and couldn’t get the run home. Heh.

Also my God every time I see him I am reminded that David Wright is so cute. Like Pettitte-level hotness. Too bad he’s a Met.

    • Jose says:

Too bad Ankiel isn’t still there.

  43. JGS says:

really knocked the crap out of that one Castillo

  44. Jeez, someone has to score in this Mets-Cards game. I honestly don’t think I can take another inning (Even though I started watching in the 4th).

  45. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

I’m gonna watch the Rockies-Braves game, at least I like both of teams, so they could entertain me.

  46. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Did Brendan Ryan just let out a huge f-bomb after that foul bunt?

  47. Brad Toughy says:

Does anyone know the reasoning behind a batter NOT getting an RBI on a double play ball? He’d get an RBI if he beat out the relay throw.

He still drove the run in, regardless.

  48. Brooklyn Ed says:

got to love Fox and their open mics. another F bomb from Schumacker.

  49. Alex S says:

please let Albert hit a walkoff granny

  50. bexarama says:

God doesn’t want this Mets/Cards game to end

  51. Jose says:

The second TB/Boston game is going to finish way after midnight. They should have started the first one a little bit earlier.

  52. Alex S says:

my gosh another walk to Albert….4 walks today

  53. Jack says:

Heh. How great would it be if he had thrown it over his head?

  54. Hughesus Christo says:

    This Mets game is RIDICULOUS.

    • bexarama says:

supposedly Holliday is sick but yeah that’s ridiculous

      • YankeeJosh says:

So then you pinch hit for Holliday. My biggest issue is how you can have the pitcher’s spot behind Pijols. He’s as good as out of the game now. Who wouldn’t walk Pujols to face the Pitcher or a weak pinch hitter?

  55. Alex S says:

    F the NL

  56. Brad Toughy says:

How do you say fist pump in Japanese?

  57. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

National League Baseball is fucking boring.

    Let’s go Ubaldooooo!

  58. Pasqua says:

Tony LaRussa should be taken out back and shot.

What a “managerial genius.” No…you save the backup catcher, Tony. I’m sure it’ll be well-worth it.

    • YankeeJosh says:

How on earth do you have the Pitcher’s spot batting behind Pujols? That’s just an insanely stupid double switch.

  59. Frigidevil says:

Ok mccarver has officially gone off the deep end. He just explained that the advantage of having runners on second and third instead of first and third is now you can steal home!?

And dear god how did they get out of that. Mets got 2 ks and walked pujols to laod the bases, the cards leave their pitcher in to hit, and he watches strike three down the middle.

    • Pasqua says:

Heard that too. Thought for sure I was not hearing him correctly. Holy shite.

      • Frigidevil says:

Some things are just so ridiculous, you can’t make them up. Kenny Albert needs to pair with mccarver more often, he contributes NOTHING to the rambling incoherence, making it that much better.

        • dkidd says:

i actually love how much dead air albert has allowed in this broadcast. it’s nice when announcers don’t babble on every second.

  60. La Russa is an idiot.

How the heck do you double switch Holliday out of the game and allow the pitcher to hit behind Pujols?

If Girardi did this, he would be chased out of New York by an angry mob. He would be lucky to escape with his life.

    • YankeeJosh says:

My thoughts exactly. I could maybe excuse Holliday being double switched out, but you can never put the Pitcher’s spot behind Pujols. That pretty much assures he’ll be walked for the rest of the game. Just an insanely bad move.

    • Pasqua says:

Notice that McCarver comments on the Cards leaving the bases loaded in 3 of the last 5 innings, but NO mention of the fact that 2 of those 3 instances saw a relief pitcher hitting instead of a bench player.

One must not question The Great LaRussa.

  61. JGS says:

…and the Mets forgot who was up. well done Jerry

  62. Hughesus Christo says:

What the hell is this now? What is the point of pinch hitting Jon Niese for Takahashi?

  63. bexarama says:

It looks COOOOOOLD in Boston. Also Buchholz is awful with men on base.

  64. pete says:

hokay so. Open thread I thought I’d put the question out there:

I was on FB earlier, and saw a picture of my friend at a club dancing next to a truly homely woman. He was online so, in jest, I asked him what the creature was. He got really upset about it. She’s a friend of his, apparently. Is this normal? I feel like objectively catagorizing the physical appearances of women is supposed to be an intarnishable pastime of all men. Who is more wrong?

  65. Brad Toughy says:

    Whoa. Dexter Fowler!!

  66. Hughesus Christo says:

Oh look, here’s the one prospect in the system that they’re currently wasting as a mop-up reliever for an 80-win team.

  67. bexarama says:

Joe Maddon and his horribly douchey ways besmirch the wonderful baseball hat with the flaps.

  68. The Phillies, of all teams, are getting shut out by the Marlins.

  69. Jose says:

So Ubaldo is at 105 pitches. He has a no hitter going. Still throwing 96-97 last innings. You leave him out there until he finishes the game or gives up a hit, right?

  70. Hughesus Christo says:

Brendan Ryan: King of the F-Bombs

  71. Alex S says:

lets see what this Mejia kids got

  72. bexarama says:

    Brendan Ryan might cry

  73. Brad Toughy says:

Ubaldo Jimenez never tires it seems. He’s throwing straight-up gas.

Has pitched from the stretch since about the 6th inning and has been even better.

  74. ShuutoHeat says:

Bucholz getting lit, gotta love it.

    • bexarama says:

Burrell is killing the Sox today.

Also, Buchholz walked three and threw like 45 pitches in the first inning and obviously got rattled by an error behind him? TO TEH PEN!!!!!

  75. WIlliam says:

Is there anywhere to watch the Met’s game? I can’t find it on the TV.

  76. SouthernYankeeFan says:

Any body read the book “Living on the Black”??

  77. Brad Toughy says:

Jimenez leading off the top of the 9th, at 114 pitches.

  78. YankeeScribe says:

Should Cervelli become CC’s personal catcher?

“In 12 career games working with Cervelli, Sabathia has a 2.37 E.R.A and batters have hit .180 against him. In 16 with Posada, Sabathia has a 4.47 E.R.A. and batters have hit .265.”

    • bexarama says:

It’s far too small of a sample size.

    • whozat says:

Who caught CC last april when he struggled? In a sample this uselessly small, those 5 starts would skew the whole thing. Have you controlled for the strength of the lineups he faced in those games? If not, your data doesn’t mean anything.

Also, did you watch the post-season? When CC annihilated all comers? Who caught him every time? How, after that, can you try to argue that who catches him makes a bit of difference?

  79. Alex S says:

Wow Jimenez with 6 walks thus far. I’m glad i drafted him

  80. Alex S says:

is there any way to watch the Rockies game right now?

  81. WIlliam says:

A lot of good names tonight. Mets v cards, Jiminez no-hitter(as of now), rays walk-off, and of course the Yankees crushing the rangers.

  82. bexarama says:

Ubaldo just hit 98 MPH on his like 120th pitch of the game o_O

  83. Punky Brewster with the grit dive to first.

  84. Jose says:

One out away from the no-hitter!

  85. Alex S says:

    1 out away!

  86. Jose says:

There it is! No-hitter! Nice work Ubaldo.

  87. bexarama says:

    Ubaldo does it! :D

  88. WIlliam says:

    No hitter!!!!!! Congrats Ubaldo!!

  89. Brad Toughy says:

Brian McCann’t get a hit and Ubaldo does it!

  90. Ubaldo hit 98 mph on his 126th pitch of the night. Word.

  91. Alex S says:

wooooo! go Ubaldo. Breakout ace this year

  92. Jimenez has a no-hitter! Wow, that’s great for him.

  93. Kevin says:

Jimenez is on my fantasy team! Glorious victory!

  94. Brad Toughy says:

And the Mets and Cardinals play on.

  95. bexarama says:

aargh Cards/Ludwick what in the world was that?!?!?

  96. Andy_C_23 says:

    Ludwick’s an asshole

  97. pete says:

That was sick. His stuff might even be better than Verlander’s. Doesn’t have a very smooth delivery, but holy hell hitting against him would NOT be fun.

  98. Someone already updated Wikipedia to reflect Ubaldo’s no-hitter: http://bit.ly/d4rGoy

  99. Hughesus Christo says:

My “Get Doc, Tim and Ubaldo by any means necessary” auction strategy is paying off.

  100. Frigidevil says:

Right after the no-no, epic baserunning fail by the cards and we’re in the 17th

  101. Alex S says:

First time I drafted Ubaldo was in 08. I’ve always been a fan of his. Ever since 08 I’ve drafted him every year since. I’m glad to see him succeed

  102. bexarama says:

Atlanta fans booed Jimenez? Not surprising.

    • bexarama says:

also, Johan with the rally cap? ADORABLE

      • Frigidevil says:

Why is Mccarver so hung up on Santana being in the dugout cheering for his team to win the game he started???? Does he think pitchers just pitch until they’re done and leave the ballpark?

        • bexarama says:

I still remember Rick Sutcliffe in Game… 4? of the 2005 Astros/Braves NLDS. It was 18 innings long and I think both teams used every player… except Andy Pettitte. Sutcliffe was totally freaking out. “WE DON’T EVEN KNOW WHERE PETTITTE IS!!!!” Then it turns out he was at home taking a nap. wtf.

This is the game that will not enddddd

          • Jack says:

Yes, it goes on and on, my friend.
Some people started playing it, not knowing what it was,
and they’ll continue playing it forever just because…

  103. Steve H says:

    My fantasy team this week has a 1.07 ERA…..and a 1.10 WHIP

  104. Alex S says:

Wow in all the excitement for Ubaldo I didn’t notice Nolasco’s final line. 9 INN, 5 HA, 3 BBI, 4 K, ER, W……against the Phillies

  105. Steve H says:

So Gardner is slugging .296, but I’d say he’s exceeding expectations so far (in a very SSS).

  106. bexarama says:

Joe West finds the Mets and Cardinals pathetic and embarrassing.

  107. Frigidevil says:

This game is so full of fail, it makes me feel that much better about being a Yanakee fan

  108. WIlliam says:

How do the Met’s not have a no-hitter in 50 years? That’s fucking ridiculous!

  109. Alex S says:

OMG i just realized a guy in another one of my leagues (Where i don’t own Ubaldo) sat Ubaldo. in favor of……Ian Kennedy. HAHAHA

  110. bexarama says:

Yadier Molina has caught 17 innings!!!! I’m in pain just thinking about that.

  111. Prediction: The Cardinals win on a walkoff HR … by Felipe Lopez.

  112. bexarama says:

My prediction: Albert Pujols Jr. will hit a walk-off home run in the 473rd.

  113. The game is on FOX, right?

  114. bexarama says:

    Felipe Lopez pitching!

  115. Do Felipe Lopez’s pitching stats count for my fantasy team?

  116. Hughesus Christo says:

Can LaRussa be fired mid-game? What the fuck is this shit? Selig needs to use the best interest of baseball clause.

  117. Brooklyn Ed says:

Kyle Lohse in the outfield? NO WAY…

  118. JGS says:

man, the radar gun didn’t even pick that one up

  119. bexarama says:

This game is the most ridiculous thing ever

  120. Alex S says:

haha Valdes caught going to 2nd. this game is officially hilarious

  121. WIlliam says:

    Weirdest game ever.

  122. Frigidevil says:

And now this is officially the greatest game I have ever watched in any sport.

    • whitty says:

The last game I watched that stretched this long was Rockies – Padres, 22 innings:

But this takes the cake. Felipe Lopez pitching in a tie game, double-switching the pitcher behind the hitter, NO RUNS, getting thrown out at second after a fielding error, the winning run stupidly getting thrown out at home… this is AWESOME.

      • bexarama says:

you forgot the pitcher playing the outfield o_O

        • whitty says:

You know it’s a great game when the pitcher is playing in left field and it doesn’t even make the list of reasons why said game is awesome.

I think Busch Stadium fell down the rabbit hole.

  123. PaulF says:

My fantasy starting pitchers today: Johan Santana, Tim Lincecum, James Shields, and Ubaldo Jimenez.

  124. This is pathetic. I almost thought that Lopez punched out Valdes. And thus I laughed my ass off.

  125. danny says:

    LMAOOO this game is hilarious

  126. NL Baseball! Catch the feve…urrrmm…plague?

  127. Felipe Lopez is awesome.

  128. Brad Toughy says:

I wonder what Joe West thinks about this game.

  129. WIlliam says:

I want to see Pujos pitch!

  130. bexarama says:

I love baseball. Every day, you see things you never saw before. A no-hitter isn’t even the craziest game of the day!!

  131. This game is epic. I think that Lopez will be the first player to ever hit a grand slam and then get a win if the Cards have some walkoff magic. Holy shit.

  132. WIlliam says:

A no-hitter is being shown up, wow.

  133. Frigidevil says:

Wow Mccarver actually managed to be funny. “The cardinals need to win this now because the Mets have the record for the most runs scored in the 19th inning”

  134. Alex S says:

Ok lets start placing our bets. Over/Under on 20 innings played. I’m taking the over with The Mets winning it then somehow losing it

  135. WIlliam says:

    Pujos the pitcher, pleeeeease.

  136. If this game isn’t over by the end of the 18th it will be declared a tie and to make up for it tomorrow’s game will decide home field advantage in the world series.

  137. WIlliam says:

    To the 19th!!!!!!

  138. bexarama says:

    this game is bananas b-a-n-a-n-a-s.

  139. PaulF says:

The mets should have Joba pitch the 19th. I don’t know of any other place better for that bull in a china shop mentality.

  140. Jose says:

    Reyes showing bunt?!!?! haha

  141. bexarama says:

    Another position player pitching. lol

  142. Alex S says:

ok looks like the Mets are set up here

  143. bexarama says:

well when you have a position player on the mound you really want to give away outs. Great.

    Castillo limping?

  144. Doug says:

Mets sacrifice a runner over with Joe Mather pitching. LOL NL

  145. poster says:

This is my second favorite non Yankee game ever. The only game that beats it? Papelbon’s blown save vs. the Angels last year.

  146. danny says:

why in Mo’s name are they bunting? hahahaha unbelieveable

  147. We need a new pitcher!

  148. bexarama says:

I feel like the Cardinals are TRYING to give this game to the Mets

  149. Yankees #1 Fan says:

They’re the mets. Give them a break.

  150. poster says:

Mr. No Walk up with bases loaded and one out.

  151. Vinny the Bull says:

    I hope K-Rod blows it.

  152. JGS says:

odds of K-rod blowing it? I say somewhere around 80%

  153. WIlliam says:

Have all the Cardinal starters pitched tonight?

  154. Prediction: K-Rod blows the save.

  155. Frigidevil says:

  156. Yankees #1 Fan says:

It’s like how the nationals beat the Phillies.

  157. Alex S says:

They will walk Pujols for the 5th time in the bottom half of the inning. I just want to see this keep going

  158. poster says:

    Cards’ll still win.

  159. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

Deep inside the Mets know this game was given to them…

    unless K-Rod blows it!

  160. WIlliam says:

    High voiced announcer is dumbstruck.

    • whozat says:

Tim McCarver’s senility makes even everyday occurrences (like the pitcher covering 1B on a grounder to the first baseman) a surprise.

  161. Kevin says:

I will literally cream my pants if K-Rod blows the save.

  162. Alex S says:

I Soooooooooooo wanna see K-rod blow the save and Albert hit the walkoff

  163. WIlliam says:

The last few innings I’ve benn torn between wanting the game to go on, and wanting the Cards to win.

  164. Yankees #1 Fan says:

Blow the save! Blow the Save!

  165. Frigidevil says:

This game can only end one way. On an intentional walk to Pujols with the bases loaded

  166. bexarama says:

    Someone please drop a game-ending pop-up

  167. whitty says:

I fully expect the Mets to find a way to lose this game on something ridiculous like a Lohse walk-off or the pitcher screwing up the intentional walk and leaving one too close to the plate for Albert or… you get the idea.

  168. WIlliam says:

When was the last game this long?

  169. camilo Gerardo says:

cards’ unclutch offense aside, it is pretty sad that the mets got their only run on a position player

  170. Yankees #1 Fan says:

Rivera recorded more by that time, just saying

  171. whitty says:

Can you walk Albert if it puts the tying run in scoring position with nobody out? Can you?

  172. Yankees #1 Fan says:

How about we demonstrate to the cards the classic luis castillo play?

  173. I honestly hope Ludwick gets on base so Pujols can hit a walk off HR. It will be beautiful.

  174. Alex S says:

Here we go. LETS GO ALBERT!!!

  175. WIlliam says:

Wow, nice at bat by Ludwick.

    I hate Ludwick

  198. camilo Gerardo says:

    uh, did holliday pitch today?

  199. WIlliam says:

  201. whozat says:

  202. JGS says:

come on, wild pitch right here

  203. whitty says:

And this is where Pujols steals home.

  204. Alex S says:

  205. Jose says:

I just want the game to go on and on forever. It’s sooooooo entertaining

  223. whozat says:

Oh, and Ubaldo Jimenez just threw a no-hitter.

Oh, and the Yankees won or something.

What time did this game start at?

  227. Brian says:
