Open Thread: CC goes home

Twelve games in, All Star balloting opens
Montero goes deep again as Scranton falls

The Yankees are in the Bay Area, so that means CC Sabathia is back in his old stomping grounds. The Yanks’ ace threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the first night game in the history of North Vallejo Little League’s Thurman Field on Monday night, which he helped rebuild. This certainly isn’t the first time Sabathia has gone back to his hometown and helped out, just Google “CC Sabathia Vallejo” and look at what comes up. He’s clearly a world class athlete that gets it.

Anyway, here’s the open thread to hold you over until tonight’s game, which starts at 10pm ET. The Cubs and Mets are back at it, plus the Phillies and Braves are on the MLB Network. You’ve also got a ton of NBA and NHL playoff action. Enjoy.

It sucks Edinson Volquez got suspended for PEDS. He probably won’t win ROY now…

    • Brad Toughy

True. He’ll probably only get 1 or 2 votes now.

    • ARX

More like ‘fined for PEDs’, for all intents and purposes. And only 133k or so, at that.

      • RichYF

Best part is the “uproar” about how his suspension should start after he’s off the DL and not immediately which essentially turns it into a fine as you said.

The good news is, Sergio Mitre “served” a 50-game suspension in early 2009 right around when the Yanks signed him. I forget the exact time line, but it’s basically the same situation. I’m not shocked that nobody cared.

          Meh, it was Sergio Mitre.

        • http://www.theyankeeu.com/ Nostra-Artist

Sounds nice, but that’s unenforceable. All you have to do is activate the guy to make his suspension kick in, and the recovery period for TJ surgery is anywhere from 12-18 months. There’s no exact recovery date to work with, so a PED suspension for a guy coming off TJ is pretty much a joke.

  • http://richardiurilli.wordpress.com/ Richard Iurilli

I need a 1B in one of the RAB leagues. What kind of return should it take to get someone like Paul Konerko?

    • Brad Toughy

Depends on what the guy who has Konerko’s team looks like. And what you have available to deal.

If he can afford to deal Konerko, I’d wager a guess that his offense is decent enough and that he’ll have a fair replacement. Maybe look to deal some pitching, if that’s an area of strength.

          1B-Kevin Youkilis

    • Jose

He has a good personality? I’m hopeful that he pitches until 50. Not to hijack this thread, but is he a hall of famer? What about if he pitches a couple of more decent years?

      • bexarama

Nope. Decent pitcher with a nice long career, not a HOFer. He’d have to have some exceptional years in the future to be considered.

        • Jose

I kind of want him to get 300 wins to create a problem for voters. That plateau is basically an automatic-in, they would have problems if Moyer reached it.

          Career ERA+: 105
          Career FIP: 4.44

          Ugh.

          Career WAR: 47.4 (83rd)
That’s higher than Pettitte, Waite Hoyt, Lefty Gomez, Hoyt Wilhelm, Dizzy Dean, and Herb Pennock.

I say no, but that WAR is pretty solid. Longevity FTW.

          • Jose

That WAR is pretty solid, mostly from the fact that he was league average for a long career. League average being better than replacement level.(I think by about 10%) I agree though, even with that longevity I don’t see a league average guy as a hall of famer.

          • bexarama

John Oscar Dickshot, commonly known as “Ugly” Johnny Dickshot (January 24, 1910–November 4, 1997) was a Major League Baseball outfielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1936-38, the New York Giants in 1939, and the Chicago White Sox from 1944-45. He won the nickname “Ugly” because of his self-proclaimed status as the “ugliest man in baseball”.

Man, that’s just wrong. If your last name is Dickshot, you should at least be blessed with rugged good looks or some other thing that would help you with the ladies. Having an effed-up name AND being horribly ugly? That’s just unfair.

Not that I’d know anything about that.

She claims the campaign isn’t taken seriously enough and will be too costly.

It’s a shame she’s running as a Republican. If she played for the other team, I bet David Plouffe could get her a dynamite web presence, Obama-style, and before she knew it, she’d have more money than she could shake a stick at (pun intended).

With Cameron out 2 months, anyone think the Sox should give Jermaine Dye a look? You can live with his horrendous defense in Fenway’s LF, he’s insurance if Big Sloppy doesn’t get going and can still hit some. For a few mil?

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Your Favorite Pundit’s Favorite Pundit

At this point, the Sox can’t afford not to sign Dye. It’s all hands on deck mode. You know how you shouldn’t panic because it’s April and it’s still early?

      The Sox should panic. Seriously.

      • poster

You really think so? They still have a great starting staff (you know that they’ll all pick it up), Papelbon, Youkilis, Pedroia, and a pretty well above average defense, plus you know they’ll improve even more later in the year when their players come off the DL.

        • PaulF

He’s saying he wants them to panic and do something stupid like sign Dye

          • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Your Favorite Pundit’s Favorite Pundit

No, I’m saying that signing Dye actually makes a buttload of sense for them. Even if he’s a defensive zero, he makes that lineup much, much better. Play him in LF until Cameron’s back, then move him to DH after that.

            • bexarama

Silly tsjc, it’s too early to give up on RUN PREVENTION 2010!.

                • bexarama

                  makes sense.

Still, Lowell isn’t done like Ortiz is. I don’t know why they don’t DH him more.

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Your Favorite Pundit’s Favorite Pundit

          Sorry, let me clarify:

The Sox should panic in regards to their everyday lineup of position players. Cameron is out for an extended stretch and Big Papi is legally dead. Even if Drew bounces back (which isn’t a given, as he has classic “old man skills”), they’re still at least one everyday starter short of a full nine-some.

Adding one more bat is a must. Dye is a great fit for them; they’ll find ABs for him all year long.

          • Jose

Do you think they will look to unsigned free agents first? Or will they look at they trade market and try and pick up a bigger bat?

            • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Your Favorite Pundit’s Favorite Pundit

I think they’ll look trade market, sniff around all year, not find a partner, and sign a free agent instead.

They’re still not going to pony up the elite prospects it’d take for AGonz. Still don’t see it. They need Kelly too much going forward, and Westmoreland is now a question mark (plus they spent a lot of capital for V-Mart last year).

              • bexarama

Yep. I don’t think they’d give up Buchholz+ for AGonz, either.

                • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Your Favorite Pundit’s Favorite Pundit

That too. And AGonz’s price hasn’t dropped below that level yet, he’s still too far away from free agency.

              • Jose

What about Dukes or Delgado? Do you think they have any chance of being the free agents signed? Or is Dye really the best bet?

                • bexarama

Delgado is still on crutches, so that’s not happening.

                • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Your Favorite Pundit’s Favorite Pundit

Elijah Dukes is a black man with a lengthy criminal history. Carlos Delgado once refused to honor the U.S. national anthem.

They’re utterly off limits in Boston. There would be riots in Beantown.

There’s a better chance of Ted Kennedy rising from the grave to take a shit on the newly signed Health Care Reform bill.

                • Jose

Didn’t realize that. Dye really is probably the best option.

                • Rick in Boston

Dukes in Boston? Are we sure we’re talking about Elijah and not David?

              • Hey ZZ

Westmoreland cannot even be in the conversation at this point. He is a non-prospect until he shows he can play baseball again. Since, he was probably their most valuable trade chip in the minors their ability to trade for a big bat took a serious hit with his condition.

Kelley, which a highly rated prospect I do not think can be the centerpiece of a trade for a guy like Gonzalez who is so cheap and talented for the next 2 years. He still has not proved anything above A ball and even in AA this year he is barely pitching as the Sox have restricted him to 3 inning starts. There are still way too many question marks there for a GM to risk trading the face of the franchise for as the centerpiece of the deal.

Bucholz is probably the key to the Sox getting a big bat. He has to pitch well over the next few months and prove by the trade deadline he has legitimate front of the rotation future.

If Bucholz falters and continues to struggle with his fastball the Sox are in serious trouble if they are banking on making a big trade at the deadline.

          • poster

This I could agree with. Still, even if they do nothing I think that it is quite possible they still make the playoffs. The Rays would have to fall back a bit but that isn’t impossible.

Looking at our team objectively, I really don’t see us missing the playoffs unless we’re absolutely destroyed by injuries, 2009 Mets style. I don’t see us winning 105+ games since that is incredibly difficult, but I don’t see us winning less than 96 either, and probably more than that.

      • Jose

        PECOTA adjusted postseason odds: 38%

The season start has brought them below coin flip odds of making the playoffs when taking into account projected player production. Only 12 games in and that already happened.

      • http://www.theyankeeu.com/ Nostra-Artist

I don’t think Dye’s a panic move. He can still play, and was actually really good up in the first half of last year. He’s probably just at that age where he’s a part time player.

Now Sheffield, that would be a panic move.

        • Jose

Something about Sheffield wouldn’t fit in Boston. I can’t quite put my finger on it…

          • bexarama

Or Dye. Seriously, Cameron, Beltre, and Dye? I feel like that would be illegal in Boston.

Mike Tannenbaum has got to cede the backcover to Jerry Reese one of these days. I’m confident in Reese’s ability to avoid drafting JPP or Iupati and land one of the fan’s faves … Spiller, McClain, or the trade down option.

In other words, we’re not cutting Faneca… unless we draft a quality guard this weekend to be his replacement, and then we’re most definitely cutting Faneca, to avoid paying him 30M over the next 3 years..
