Don’t miss Chad Jennings’ feature on Juan Miranda and what it took to defect to the U.S.

what to make of laird? hes having a hell of a season…will he ever be worth enough as trade bait if it comes to that?

    • RollingWave says:

he seems like your traditional AAAA slugger to me, though the line between that and a semi useful player is usually quiet thin, he’s not really old enough to be classified as AAAA either.

My gut is that he’s Andy Phillips with less glove more bat. hopefully he prove me wrong.

    • zs190 says:

I think he has a shot as a Eric Hinske kind of guy (corner IF-OF) that can be backup at a couple of positions. (I know he’s a 1B/3B kind of guy now but he probably could learn to play LF too)

Upside is he’s an average every-day guy for teams like Pirates or Royals, I don’t think there is a ton of trade value for him, maybe as a 3rd or 4th guy in a deal.

      • Chris says:

Thank goodness the following posters on this blog are not running the Yankees. Seriously – Laird already being classified as a AAAA player and an average player on the Pirates with no trade value as his ceiling. Unbelievable. Bye.

  2. Barry says:

I don’t get it, what’s the deal with Milo? First they call him up from Extended and he plays a few in a row, then he’s buried on the bench and now he’s batting 2nd. Do the Yankees like him as a prospect or not? I know he was a very late rounder because of the 2 sports, but do they see him as a late rounder or as a possible prospect?

    • zs190 says:

Think he’s a non-prospect. He’s a smallish guy with little to no power. Has decent speed if I recall, but not enough range to play CF. Scouting report on him after he was drafted was that he has a decent command of strike zone but a corner OF with no power and without godly contact skills is probably a 4th-5th OF at best.

  3. Steve H says:

So with Aceves’ setback, is moving Hirsh to the pen insurance to fill Ace’s role if he’s out for the year?

  4. dan says:

does jose ramirez remind you of jenry mejia mechanically. Does anyone know what manny banuelos injury was? Did he have an apendectomy or is his elbow okay. Is there any video of banuelos pitching?

A little off the yankees for a second, does anyone think Lebron is coming to the knicks. Seems the same people who hate the yankees seem to be the same who hate Lebron. Is that just a coincidence!

  5. dan says:

Is chris cabrera going to pitch in the gulf coast or staten island later in the year. I saw a video of him pitching. I hear he throws the ball pretty hard. Where will Bryan mitchel pitch in june gulf coast or staten island. Does anyone project these guys as possible starters that could be major league ready before CC Sabathia and
    A.J. Burnett’s contracts are up!

  6. Jake H says:

Austin Romine needs to hit some HR’s to get his slugging up.

    He’s really impressive in Trenton.

    • whozat says:

I believe that the ballpark in Trenton suppresses power. His away numbers might give more insight into how much power he’s currently showing. Might have to allow some more time for him to compile a bigger sample.

      • Rick in Boston says:

        According to minorleaguesplits:

Romine Away: .377/.407/.597 in 77 AB’s with 11 XBH including all 3 HR
        Romine Home: .254/.353/.373 in 59 AB’s with 7 XBH

SSS warning: his LD% is much better on the road but his FB% increases dramatically at home.

Also, and this is more just a fun thing to notice, but Romine is 1-14 in 9th inning or later AB’s.

  7. Bobby's World says:

Trenton is a hard park to hit in.How about my boy Laird(That no prospect player)I told him about all you guys dogging him out.10 hr’s and 50 rbi’s already. He had 13 and 75 all of last year.I guess we know who will be playing in this years eastern league all star game.

  8. dan says:

how good is romine defensively? can he call a good game? is he projected to hit better than cervelli? Does anyone see him coming up before this season is over?

    • Rick in Boston says:

Good enough to be the probable future everyday C. I’m not sure – it depends whether the staffs let the catchers call it or if they call it from the bench. Yes – Romine is a better hitter. No – he’ll spend all of this year in AA and all of 2011 in AAA with maybe a cup of coffee at the end of 2011 in the bigs.

  9. emac2 says:

Romine is going to be next in line for a call up to the big club at catcher at the rate he’s going.

This idea that he plays a full year at each level is based on Montero being ready sooner or an outdated formula based on the public education system.
