Game 27: For the sweep (+ chat!)
ByTwo games into the series, the Yankees have two wins. It’s their eighth series win in nine tries, something only two other Yankee teams in history can claim (1928 & 1938). Yes, it’s been 71 years since the Yanks have won eighth of their first nine series. Cool stuff, huh?
On the mound to try for the sweep this afternoon is Andy Pettitte, who took a little bit of a beating at the hands of the White Sox last time out, but has been stellar overall. Mariano Rivera is available to close the door in the 9th if needed, but Joe Girardi indicated that he would like to play it safe and give him another day if at all possible. Joba Chamberlain is unavailable to close after working the last two nights. My guess is that if push comes to shove late, Al Aceves will work the 9th.
Here’s the lineup…
Jeter, SS
Johnson, DH
Teixeira, 1B
A-Rod, 3B
Cano, 2B
Swisher, RF
Gardner, CF
Cervelli, C
Winn, LF
And on the mound, Andrew Eugene Pettitte.
Get away day for the Orioles, who have to be in Minnesota for a series starting tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm ET and can be seen on YES. I’m holding our weekly game chat today, so join in when the party starts at 1pm. Enjoy the game, chat’s after the jump.

And on the mound, Andrew Eugene Pettitte.
He’s insulted you called him that.
He prefers A.E.
Titan A.E.
Typically I’d be worried about the regression that Andy’s due for, but since it’s Baltimore I could give a shit less. Fuck the Os. Glad to see Frankie get some playing time, though.
Watch out! This guy’s edgy!
Edgy is no match for gritty and gutty.
Andy likes facing the Orioles. Break out the brooms.
Let’s make this 27-6. Woo.
Adam Jones scratched
Yea Pettitte
Has to be the Ron Jeremy stache
NICK THE STICK!!!!!!
Something is wrong with MB game day, its showing that Nicky J had an XBH..
I know, I’m scared too.
I was in shock simply at seeing “In Play”
dammit derek
Cano has to have the strongest arm of any second baseman in the majors.
Dang. When are Tex and A-Rod going to get hot? (I hope I am proved laughably wrong to ‘question’ their abilities in the upcoming days)
Go, New York Nicks!
Last year I thought it was awesome that Swish’s numbers were pretty good despite being a lackluster hitter compared to his road self. So far, so good – slow starts by our free agent pickups (Granderson, Javy) have been balanced out by some hot starts (Cano, Swish to an extent, Hughes/AJ/Andy, and CC being incredibly solid).
wehat’s the on-field delay?
Orioles pitching coach ejected. He was arguing a little.
O’s pitching coach got tossed
Come on A-Rod, time to bust out.
Why would Nick Johnson try to score from second?
He was inspired by Jamie Moyer’s terrible base running the other night.
Poor NJ hits a homer then promptly takes a run away…needs to learn when you slide you are supposed to touch base with lead foot… Poor base running
Nick Johnson did something not optimal so DALELAAAAAAMA’S HERE!
/Dalelama’d
Wait, it’s actually Dalelama!!!!
I’m surprised he called him “Poor NJ” and not like “Useless, non-warrior, tender tissue NJ”
You know what, you’re right. For the first time in baseball history a runner was thrown out at the plate. I’m sure it will be the lead on SportsCenter. I never knew it was even possible.
Yes-Mo > the current state of umpiring. That’s just sad.
I don’t know if it’s just me, but umpiring has been getting consistently worse recently (past 2-3 years) or maybe I’m just becoming more aware that they’ve always been horrible.
Wally Matthews chat going on right now. I dropped a few questions for him.
“Why are you so dumb?”
He only approves certain questions, I wish I could get that in. I got a lazy Cano reference in though.
Did anyone who’s watching the YES feed see what the quiz question was? I missed it.
C’mon Andrew.
No runs! No runs!
Wooo!
our home-grown adonis >>>>>>>>> orioles home-grown adonis
He really is an Adonis but aaaagh. Okay, Andy, get the next guy.
gardner at-bats are becoming must-watch tv
Hey all, just got back from a review session for my final tomorrow.
How is the team looking? Saw that Nicky J had a homerun in the 1st, good news.
What the hell? I am getting one of the required Required Monthly Test of the Emergency Alert system… god damn it Time Warner
I get it on XM/Sirius radio all the time.
Not sure why I thought that was interesting enough to type out and hit ‘submit’.
I got that earlier. It was SO LOUD!
Another opposing starting pitcher bites the dust.
Love when Tex drives the ball to RCF… 6-1 Yanks
I totally thought that was gonna be an eeeeeasy catch, actually. Glad to be wrong.
That IBB to A-Rod worked, but it was still stupid.
hendrickson used to play for the new jersey nets
Why did they intentionally walk a runner into scoring position for the hottest hitter in MLB?
oh that’s why. (sad trumpet sound)
kay: do you tweet at all, al?
leiter: no
dead air…
they were just saying on 880 that joba was talking about how he finds the 9th inning easier to pitch than the 8th. b-jobbers will be working themselves into a lather
Mariano to teh 8th!!11!!!1!!!
Oh Andy. BE OKAY. BE OKAY. BE OKAY.
I’m scared. Only 77 pitches.
he looked okay…
Just read a thing on ESPN about ‘unwritten rules’ of baseball and the interviewed Jim Palmer, Bert Blyleven and Gossage. They asked questions like what do you do if a hitter leans in to get hit by a pitch on purpose. Gossage’s response?
“I threw so hard that people never played many games like that with me. It just didn’t happen — because you’d get killed.”
Love it
I like Mitre, I just hate his number. It brings back bad memories of Pavano.
what happened to pettitte?
He played for Houston a few years, but now he’s back.
Nick Johnson! Look at him actually looking like a baseball player
Hope they give David Robertson a inning to work some kinks out, especially if we have a big lead. I think he’s our best reliever stuffwise outside of Mo/Joba.
What about Ace?
Eh, Ace is, quite frankly, a junkballer. A good one, but he doesn’t have what you call ‘stuff’.
Excellent inning by Mitre. Well done.
it’s pronounced JAG-war!!!
Hey all. I just got home. Can somebody give me a rundown of what has happened during this game? Thanks will be spread around.
solo HRs by NJ and Swisher, Tex had a two-run double, A-Rod had an RBI hit, Pettitte was doing pretty good (getting lots of ground balls) but he was pulled after 5 with a pitch count of 77 so now I am trying to stop myself from sobbing. No updates, though. Hopefully Girardi just wanted guys to get work in.
nick the stick getting hot just in time for boston
Ah. Nick Johnson must’ve just been up … I heard “Party In The USA”
yeah and he lined a double to RCF
Why is Pettite out after 76 pitches?
mitre needs work
i hope: girardi wants to get mitre some work
i fear: sports illustrated
Stretching out Mitre to put a fire under Vazquez?
Javy would be one pricy mop-up man.
Damn, Mitre is cruising. Fun to watch.
Any word on Andy? The YES crew or Sterling and Suzy mention anything?
No. The fact that they’re not “We’re gonna get you information on Andy!!!” like they were about Posada when he was removed makes me feel slightly better.
I suppose that is a slight comfort… thanks for the update.
guess what this is:
cervelli
gardner
cano
johnson
swisher
arod
jeter
tex
winn
Grit ratings?
OBP?
a list of Yankee players by OBP?
2010 obp best-to-worst
A random list of Yankees?
Your ‘jack’ list?
IETB (I enjoyed that burn)
your mom’s “f*cket list”
/schoolyard’d
Any Update on andy? Anybody
None yet =/
It kind of makes sense to me to let bullpen guys get some work before the off day. Plus, Pettitte isn’t young. Keep him healthy.
I hope.

Comments from Keith Law on the Yankees
I really, really, don’t get it.
WHO HAS GOOD DEPTH? BAD TEAMS DO!
Yes, the Yankees don’t have a major league ready guy at every position in AAA. If they did, they’d trade them to make the big league club better.
Yeah, on the radio they were mentioning that much of the pen hasn’t worked in a while so it could just be that Girardi is giving his aged starter rest while allowing his pen to get some work before heading to Boston. *fingers crossed*
Wow, Mitre is cruising. Anybody think he’ll finish up and get a five inning save for AP?
…Nevermind.
zomg u teh jinx!!!!
You mean four, right?
How is Julio Lugo a $10M/year player?
Theo-ville
…you know the place where all things good happen in the draft and free agent signings are deemed great for humanity.
A place where Mo, Nomar, Lugo, et al have been removed since they don’t play the Red Sox way anymore.
/MSM’d
With AP getting an extra days rest before his next start anyway, taking him out after 77 to rest him is a little fishy.
::fingers crossed::
Ugh, dammit. This doesn’t need to get interesting.
Damn, Mitre now has a line worthy of Mitre.
damaso just made a good hitter look silly
/Utley and Howard’d
there are so many great memories of the 2009 World Series but one of my favorite was when Damaso K’d Utley on three pitches with two men on base. Just beautiful. And then Utley swung and missed at the last one and sort of shuffled his feet around in the dirt like “What, it wasn’t me.” (Utley actually does that quite a bit when he’s batting, I just thought that was funny.)
Meat-tray will make Mo earn his pay in the 9th, ehh?
i would think theyre gonna leave Robertson in, or bring in Ace
Drob pitch count limit is 6 though.
let d-rob finish
I know Marte’s supposed to be the lefty guy… but it’s 6-3, he just made Markakis look bad, and isn’t Marte supposed to be a guy who can get lefties and righties out? What’s the sense in burning Robertson here just to match up? Come on, Joe, the micromanaging of the bullpen is worse than my dad’s itineraries on family vacations.
So the guy who thought Mitre should replace Javy because of 7.1 scoreless innings, where’s he at?
Fun Fact: Over his career, Marte has shown that he’s not only good at getting left-handers out, but right-handers as well.
vs RHB (1199 PA) .243/.331/.396/.727
vs LHB (868 PA) .198/.295/.287/.582
Exactly.
Great Robs think alike!
Nick Johnson may be 2-2 with a HR, 2B, and 2 walks, but his baserunning mistake cannot be ignored. Every player who’s ever stepped foot on a baseball field knows you don’t slide the way he slid. Frankly, it’s not the Yankee Way©.
/Dalelama’d
NJ baserunning >>>>> Posada baserunning
Nick Johnson once swung at the first pitch…just to see what it was like!
/The most interesting man in the world
Its safe to say that Nick Johnson’s day can be entirely attributed to his new facial hair. Can he be “Nick ‘Stache’ Johnson” from now on?
True or false: Nick Johnson has more total bases today than in the rest of the season combined
I’d guess that’s not true just because of all the walks. Or do they not count in total bases?
Well Sterling just said “the big question will be why Andy was pulled after 5 when he only gave up 1 run”
nick johnson and babip have kissed and made up
Cano seems to be cooling off. Hopefully he doesn’t take long to get hot again
So has Jeter, Teix, Arod, Gardner, Cervelli & Winn…
Hopefully they don’t take long to get hot again.
Tex and ARod are overdue for a hot streak
7-3…and Mo goes back to sleep.
Wieters never prosper
Is D-Rob just like… missing this year? Or was that more Wieters being good?
there’s your answer
dave eiland has some work to do…
Those two balls were just smoked.
…well, he’s certainly not missing enough bats! More of his pitches seem to be up so far and haven’t quite seen the sharp breaking ball yet.
91, up, flat = See ya!
yikes the location on that last one was missed for sure
Throwing HR-ball back = Stupid.
No freaking way!
Was I just spoiled by the Stanton/Nelson/Mendoza era or do the Yankees just continually find bullpen pitchers that can’t put together consistent seasons?
I hope D Rob has a bag packed for Scarnton.
Where is Scarnton?
scarnton was a beautiful place to visit till the damn scientologists took over.
I do not know where Scarnton is but I meant Scranton,Pa.
Scarnton is a land where basement internet nerds live. You do not own real estate there?
Evan is your dad?
Nope, we all live in our mother’s basement.
Im beginning to think once Park is healthy Robertson may be the pitcher sent down and not Logan, unless Robertson is out of options not sure.
I think you’re very right. He is either hurt and not saying anything or he needs to go down clear his head and work out his problems… I believe D-ROB has 1 option left.
no tying run to the plate, please
Where the fuck did Logan get this fastball????
I could have swore that when they acquired him I read a reviewe that said he had an average fastball, maybe 90/91. Not the same guy.
Given the walk, I’d say Farnsworth left it behind.
Maybe Javy let him borrow a few MPH.
Mo, please call Joe from the pen and let him know you really, really are okay.
just great…
Oh please oh please oh please just get these next two guys
Maybe someone will recall that before the season started, I asked whether D-Rob would become this year’s bullpen regression candidate a la Veras and Edwar. Hope this doesn’t continue.
Wow…this game is just frustrating for the last 2 innings.
was that a “boone” chant?
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOne
97? Who is this guy?
he hit 98?
Throw a strike, clown.
Boone Logan is the new Billy Wagner minus the control.
ace vulturing a save
Stop it you’re giving me a goddamn heart attack.
Help!
Ughhh…the pain.
I like the 98 mph, but a save would’ve been better.
Boone Logan was hitting 98?
Does the gun have dyslexia?
“We are here at Yankee Stadium, where we’ve secretly replaced the Boone Logan they usually serve with Kyle Farnsworth. Let’s see if anyone can tell the difference!”
lefty farnsworth
What a disaster. If I were the Yankees I would not buy another free agent for the next 20 years and put all the money into cloning mariano rivera.
d-rob please find whatever it is you are looking for. you too vazquez.
No one left in the pen? So what happens if the game gets tied and goes 16 innings?
Fortunately, we don’t have to find out.
swisher
How can you walk Lugo?
,.194/.254/??? (might of had a XBH last July or something)
WTF?
FINALLY.
annnnnnnnnndddddddddddd…….exhale
kill boston
phew… thanks ace!
good lord that was annoying
Oh. Oh, thank you. I think I need the off day to recover from that.
About time Aceves was brought into the game, only went through 4 inferior relievers before getting to Ace.
Thank you, Ace.
Wow, that bullpen really tried to blow this game.
D Rob, it was nice knowing ya, see you in September.
Bullpen really slammed the door on that one…
Had em all the way.
D-ROB is killing me..I am as patient as it gets and he just keeps on sucking
i think he’s got a little too confident in his fastball
His control is bad this year. Both those hr’s came off of 3-2 counts.
Thanks Mitre for giving my fantasy opp. a HR (Wigginton).
Thanks Robertson for giving my fantasy opp. a HR (Wieters).
THANKS LOGAN FOR GIVING MY FANTASY OPP. A ONE OUT SAVE (Aceves).
^%&@^!@#*&@#!#@%!@#*$#@!$ (walks out for some fresh air)
Damn, that’s rough. I thought I was mad when that botched play by Wigginton was called a hit instead of an error costing Simon an earned run. (*desperate for saves)
How about Kim Jones with the kinda sexy outfit today, who knew.
can someone just let me know my Andrew is okay so I can go outside ;_;
Is Robertson tipping his pitches? I mean he’s literally giving up at least 2 runs everytime he makes an appearance. You have to almost try to do that…
For Major League hitters, it’s not that hard to hit a 91 mph fastball placed over the heart of the plate.
Just got home and fast forwarded to the end of the game. WTF is up with the bullpen non-Mo Division?
::pulls out pitchforks and torches::
Shit, apparently Pettitte is getting MRI for stiffness in his pitching arm, not elbow but either forearm or higher up on the arm according to latest tweets from Yankee beat writers.
Boone Logan as the throw-in in a trade, if he’s truly hitting 96-98, is something to work with. Maybe they can bring in Varitek to teach him how to pitch.
In a stupid training at work and had to watch a lead almost evaporate, coupled with wondering if Pettitte is hurt.
Why am I terrified about this weekend’s series?
Because you have some sort of complex. The Yanks are 19-8 and are sending out their three best starters against a lackluster Red Sox team.
Eh, I guess it’s because I hate the Sox/Fenway so much and they always seem to wake up for the Yankees.
Also because if Pettitte is hurt, then the cracks are definitely starting to show…all these nagging injuries, which I truly believe are the only things that can beat this tema.
*team.
Stupid quick typing.
They could be sending out their three worst starts and I’d still be confident.
