Game 34: Or maybe not (+ chat!)

By

It may or may not rain heavily in Detroit, and that’s both good and bad for the Yankees. It’s good because they can use the extra day off to rest up their injured players as well as avoid giving Sergio Mitre another start, but it’s bad because they aren’t scheduled to make another trip to Detroit this season. To make this one up, they’d have to return to MoTown on a mutual off day (June 7th and Sept. 16th appear to be the only realistic options for a makeup date), which is something neither team wants to do, or they’d have to wait until the end of the season and make it up only if impacts the final standings. That doesn’t happen very often and the league hates doing it, so expect them to lose a future off day if they can’t get the game in today.

Here’s the lineup that’ll face Justin Verlander…

Jeter, SS
Gardner, CF
Teixeira, DH
A-Rod, 3B
Cano, 2B
Posada, C
Miranda, 1B
Winn, LF
Golson, RF

And on the mound, Carsten Charles Sabathia.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm ET, and if they do start this one up, you can see it on YES locally or MLB Network nationally. Also, today is our weekly game chat, so join in at 1pm after the jump.

    LETS GO YANKEES!!

  • Doug

hey mike, current forecast actually looks better than that. < 35% chance now thru 7 PM

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Good. I screen grabbed that about a half hour ago.

  • Accent Shallow

Oh, so they do have mutual off days?

Sterling and Waldman said there weren’t any. Of course, expecting those two to be correct about anything is a fool’s errand.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

There are some, but those two are the only ones that could realistically work. They have a mutual off day next week, but Detroit will be in LA then in AZ. Not going to fly home for one game while on that trip.

  • Rose

If you told me at the beginning of the season that by May 13th – Juan Miranda, Randy Winn, and Greg Golson would be starting all at the same time…I would have thought you were crazy.

Now lets go push this ball of oil out the window…

    /Kramer’d

    • Accent Shallow

And that the season would be going much worse than it is.

    • Dela G

i would’ve thought you were talkinbout the AAA team had you told me this at the beginning of the season

    • pat

If you told me at the beginning of the season that by May 13th – Juan Miranda, Randy Winn, and Greg Golson would be starting all at the same time, and that the team would be 22-11 I would have thought you were crazy.

      • Rose

Yeah, exactly. Well who thought Phil Hughes was going to start out like Roy Halladay? lol. Things certainly have not gone as planned by any means…but the results are there regardless.

      • Zack

The 22-11 is the suprising part for me. I was expecting another 15-15 start, OMGz Yankees suck are too old headlines, then they start their run in June.

        • Rose

Hopefully it doesn’t differ THAT much lol. I’d still like to have that run in June and so forth

          • Zack

            True

  • pat

There is noting nice about facing Justin verlander.

    • Accent Shallow

      Agree.

The odd thing is, he hadn’t put up a “holy shit, this fucking guy” season until 2009. 2006-2008 weren’t bad, but they weren’t quite dominant.

(His current ERA+ is 95. I hope the Yankees can push it into the 80s)

  • Rose

    Mike,

Did you ever find out why RAB doesn’t allow posts with Mantle’s first name in the comment box? Just curious. I saw that you wrote you were looking into it. If you haven’t found anything yet that’s cool…just pretty strange haha

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

No, I haven’t. I even looked in the spam filter, and there was nothing there. If it happens again, let one of us know right away. It’s a litle hard to figure out a few hours after the fact.

      • Rose

        Mickey Mantle

      • Rose

Just an FYI. Just tried it again and it wouldn’t let me.

      • Dela G

        Mickey Mantley is awesome

      • Dela G

yeah i just tried it too, and it didn’t work

        • Dela G

ugh!! i was trying to say mantle

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I just pushed through the spam filter. Hopefully it learns that it’s okay soon.

          • Dela G

            thanks man, you’re the best

          • Rose

His autographs and baseball cards are in such high demand it’s probably universally viewed as spam now that he’s no longer with us anymore. Who knows…

      • Rose

You fixed it! What seemed to be the problem?

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I have no idea, it’s triggering a false positive with the spam filter. I had to approve those manually.

          • Rose

            Well thanks!

  • Jason from The Heartland

    Hi, everyone.

    They’re playing today.

Let’s Go, Yankees! (clap clap, clap-clap-clap)

  • Jason from The Heartland

Jeter needs to rectify his going 4 for his last 39. Let it start today.

    • boogie down

He’s actually hit the ball relatively well over that stretch (esp. in Detroit) but BABIP hasn’t exactly been his best friend recently

  • charles poet

I don’t feel bad for anyone else getting bad weather. We just had 4 inches of snow the last day and a half in Denver. But my garden and roses survived.

  • http://www.facebook.com/pages/Bring-Melvin-To-America/193013541601?ref=sgm Andy In Sunny Daytona

Yankees on MLB Network with the YES broadcast. Awesome. HD for me.

  • First Time Poster

I didn’t check, but did yesterday’s first game go unbelievably quick?

Also, why did Baltimore and Seattle start so early today?

    • First Time Poster

Speaking of Baltimore, what type of mid-season value will the O’s get out of Millwood if he keeps pitching like this the entire year?

    • Dela G

yeah it went by in 2hrs and 15 mins

  • Dela G

    attaboy jetes

  • First Time Poster

    Woohoos!

  • Dela G

great at-bat for the gritster, regardless of the outcome

  • First Time Poster

6 of 9 Yankee position players are from the farm system… but yeah… bunch of god damn mercs!

  • Dela G

    great job gritster

  • Dela G

    that changeup is filthy

  • Dela G

damn, any other park and that’s gone

  • ecksodia

    There goes the no-no.

  • Patrick

Boy, it is painful to hear Sterling pronounce chipotle.

  • ShuutoHeat

Justttttttt got back from field work, how are things looooking?

  • Dela G

    ugh :(

  • charles poet

The way the Yankees aren’t hitting verlander, that could be the game

  • charles poet

    game

  • Rose

Winn, Golson, and Miranda taking up 3 spots in a lineup against Verlander? This one could be mailed in soon…

    • Evan in NYC

I think the offense mailed this series in.

  • Evan in NYC

I feel like we are the Mets this year with injuries…

    • mike c

      except we have good pitching

      • Jrrp

Someone should forward that good pitching comment to our pitching staff, just to fill them in….

        • mike c

ah come on, cc and aj are allowed a couple stinkers if we’ve won 22 so far

          • Jrrp

In our last 19 games we’ve had 2 seperate stretches now where we’ve lost 4 out of 5 (this one’s over), that to me just doesn’t speak to good pitching.

            • mike c

we’ve had mitre, JV (the offense lost the game, not the pitching), hughes, and a rare CC stinker. We have the best starting rotation now with phil huge and the promising return of JV’s fastball, the best bullpen highlighted by the best setup and closer in the game

              • mike c

when arod wakes up, this team will be unstoppable

              • Jrrp

You can’t be serious when you say the best bullpen, I’ll give us Mo and a great Joba so far, but have you seen any of the games where the rest of our bullpen has had to pitch?? Really??

                • mike c

the bullpen has given up 2 runs in the last 6 games, both by logan

  • Sean C

Anyone else think Valverde looks like an evil video game boss when he strikes someone out? Like one of the dudes from Mike Tyson’s Punchout for NES when you land the second to last punch that will knock him out, he freaks out and bounces around the ring. http://strotty.files.wordpress.....lverde.jpg (safe)

    • mike c

      bald bullpen

  • ecksodia

Isn’t Verlander’s pitch count up there already? Then again, that bullpen…

  • Tank the Frank

Hey look A-Rod grounded out to 3rd.

  • mike c

why can’t hughes pitch every day already, jeez

  • Jrrp

So much for our “ace”, CC’s fall to mediocrity continues, live on YES!

    • pat

      You can’t be serious.

      • Jrrp

2nd highest loss total in the starting rotation behind Javy, how’s that our ace?

        • pat

          Go troll somewhere else.

        • mike c

you don’t actually like baseball do you?

          • Jrrp

            Is my stat incorrect?

            • mike c

not incorrect but you’re deliberately twisting stats to make an absurd point. It hasn’t been hot yet this year, so therefore summer is never coming either, CC is a force of nature, much like el nino

              • Jrrp

It was 90 in NY a day already, so your stat is incorrect sir.

                • Tom Zig

                  ROAR!!!!

                • mike c

that’s obviously the only day is going to be that hot though

                  • pat

                    Don’t even bother.

                • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Stop being stupid. Oh no, CC’s going to bed at the end of the day with TWO losses. Oh the humanity!

Maybe if you showing during something other than a loss, you’d have some credibility around here.

                  • Jrrp

Hey, all I said is he would have the second most losses and seems a bit mediocre to be considered our ace. If you don’t like my opinion, you can hold onto yours =).

                  • Jrrp

And on a side, how does stroking our wins make one more credible than mourning our losses?

                    • mike c

because there’s 162 games in baseball, and the yankees won the world series last year

        • Kevin G.

Grienke is 0-4. Obviously he sucks.

    • mike c

abandon ship and board the bandwagon to fairer weather
have a nice trip, cya next fall

  • mike c

BAD CC! Don’t go all lebron on us!

  • mike c

oddly enough CC is doing well with his pitches 79 compared to verlanders 100

    • Jrrp

There’s that silver lining, Madden was wrong, the key to winning the game isn’t scoring after all…

      • Tom Zig

        Bill Madden?
        John Madden?
        Joe Maddon?

        • TheLastClown

          Probably Don Maddingly.

          • Tom Zig

            I forgot Steve Madden.

      • http://www.soxandpinstripes.net JGS

It isn’t about scoring. It’s all about the spreadsheets

      • TheLastClown

You know, just because someone dropped a NY Yankees hat under your bridge doesn’t mean you have to use this page as your access to the outside world.

If you’re curious about this base-ball & would like a spot more appropriate for you, may I suggest:

        • Jrrp

Oh but I love this site, the replies are always so original.

  • http://theyankeeu.com Matt Imbrogno

    Welcome to the bigs, Ivan!

    • Will

Something happen to CC? I haven’t been following. Odd that they’d pull him for ineffectiveness with such a low pitch count, when he could at least eat a few more innings.

      • Dela G

        pulled him for ineffectiveness

        no need to waste him

      • mike c

yeah i don’t know why either… maybe the weather is doing something to the guy

        • Jrrp

Yes, the weather scored 6 runs on him in 6 innings.

          • WIlliam

            Can someone ban him?

            • Jrrp

Listing the scoring isn’t a bannable offense, I checked.

              • WIlliam

I was reffering to sll of your stuff this day, not this one in particular.

                • Jrrp

Okay, saying CC has the 2nd most losses by our starters really shouldn’t be bannable either, I could also say it’s cloudy. These are just facts, if you don’t like them, pretend they’re not true.

                  • TheLastClown

Did you know we gave up 7 win Tyler Clippard?

                    • Jrrp

                      I did indeed know that.

  • Dela G

    that was a filthy curveball

  • pat

That was a nasty hook, Ivan.

  • Dela G

    good first inning for nova

worked himself out of a jam

  • Brian in NH

not too enthused by this outing by CC….i thought we’d manage a series split.

    • http://www.soxandpinstripes.net JGS

CC through 8 starts last year: 3.70 ERA, 1.214 WHIP
CC through 8 starts this year: 3.71 ERA, 1.238 WHIP

He was fine last year, he will be fine this year

      • pat

Looks like his era is a lot worse this year than last. Yea, true “ace”.

    • JohnnyC

It looks worse because he gave up 6 runs but, honestly, Verlander against a sub-par Yankees line-up was going to be a tough task anyway. On his game, Verlander’s probably better than CC straight up. A lot of things conspired — injuries and the weather foremost — to make this a lost series. It’s a long season. Shit happens.

      • Brian in NH

I know…overall he’s still fine. I’m sure as teh summer rolls on he’ll be fine. but its always a little disheartening to see your ace give up 6. I know its unrealistic but i think we always want our ace to be unbeatable.

  • http://richardiurilli.wordpress.com/ Richard Iurilli

    What happened to Zumaya’s control problems? Career 5.4 BB/9 and 1.71 K/BB before this season, 0.9 BB/9 and 12.0 K/BB this season.

Fluke because of the SSS? Or did something click?

    • pat

      Hopefully nothing clicked.

      • Brian in NH

he put down the guitar hero

      • http://richardiurilli.wordpress.com/ Richard Iurilli

I hope not. Because he’s going to be absolutely filthy if he maintains anything ever resembling that type of control.

  • WIlliam

    No fucking way.

    • Jrrp

      Please watch the profanity. =)

      • WIlliam

        What?

      • pat

Dave, your act wasn’t original the first time around.

      • http://twitter.com/dpatrickg Dirty Pena

How can you smile on such a gloomy day for the future of the franchise?

  • Apollo22237

Can we please just get this game over and leave this place behind…

  • pat

Detroit has played some good and lucky D this series. Oh well.

  • http://theyankeeu.com Matt Imbrogno

    Fuck you, Don Kelly.

    • JohnnyC

Don Kelly sounds like the name of an actor on those 60’s TV westerns or a rockabilly artist from Sun Records.

    • TheLastClown

      Surriously.

  • WIlliam

We just need 6 runs in the 9th, where have I heard this one before?

  • WIlliam

Wow, crappy offense this series. Oh well.

    • Brian in NH

with johnson, granderson, posada and now swisher all feeling little “tugs” or whatever…its tough to keep the offense hot all the time. Tex and A-rod are starting to come around and Cano is starting to come back to earth a little. a perfect storm for a few down offensive games if you will…

  • Jrrp

I look forward to talking to everybody over this homestand. Good times all.

    • WIlliam

Can everyone join me in O:S’ing this guy? That’s all, seeya.

      • http://twitter.com/dpatrickg Dirty Pena

Sadly it seems O:S is a pipe dream. Most people (myself included) can’t help themselves.

    • http://www.soxandpinstripes.net JGS

I sincerely hope not, as that would mean an awful homestand

  • dkidd

i predict this will be the single lowest comment total for a game all year

    • Brian in NH

eh..not as many people commenting on day games?

      • http://www.soxandpinstripes.net JGS
