Game 34: Or maybe not (+ chat!)

It may or may not rain heavily in Detroit, and that’s both good and bad for the Yankees. It’s good because they can use the extra day off to rest up their injured players as well as avoid giving Sergio Mitre another start, but it’s bad because they aren’t scheduled to make another trip to Detroit this season. To make this one up, they’d have to return to MoTown on a mutual off day (June 7th and Sept. 16th appear to be the only realistic options for a makeup date), which is something neither team wants to do, or they’d have to wait until the end of the season and make it up only if impacts the final standings. That doesn’t happen very often and the league hates doing it, so expect them to lose a future off day if they can’t get the game in today.

Here’s the lineup that’ll face Justin Verlander…

Jeter, SS
Gardner, CF
Teixeira, DH
A-Rod, 3B
Cano, 2B
Posada, C
Miranda, 1B
Winn, LF
Golson, RF

And on the mound, Carsten Charles Sabathia.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:05pm ET, and if they do start this one up, you can see it on YES locally or MLB Network nationally. Also, today is our weekly game chat, so join in at 1pm after the jump.

  2. Doug says:

hey mike, current forecast actually looks better than that. < 35% chance now thru 7 PM

  3. Accent Shallow says:

Oh, so they do have mutual off days?

Sterling and Waldman said there weren’t any. Of course, expecting those two to be correct about anything is a fool’s errand.

    • Mike Axisa says:

There are some, but those two are the only ones that could realistically work. They have a mutual off day next week, but Detroit will be in LA then in AZ. Not going to fly home for one game while on that trip.

  4. Rose says:

If you told me at the beginning of the season that by May 13th – Juan Miranda, Randy Winn, and Greg Golson would be starting all at the same time…I would have thought you were crazy.

Now lets go push this ball of oil out the window…

    • Accent Shallow says:

And that the season would be going much worse than it is.

    • Dela G says:

i would’ve thought you were talkinbout the AAA team had you told me this at the beginning of the season

    • pat says:

If you told me at the beginning of the season that by May 13th – Juan Miranda, Randy Winn, and Greg Golson would be starting all at the same time, and that the team would be 22-11 I would have thought you were crazy.

      • Rose says:

Yeah, exactly. Well who thought Phil Hughes was going to start out like Roy Halladay? lol. Things certainly have not gone as planned by any means…but the results are there regardless.

      • Zack says:

The 22-11 is the suprising part for me. I was expecting another 15-15 start, OMGz Yankees suck are too old headlines, then they start their run in June.

  5. pat says:

There is noting nice about facing Justin verlander.

    • Accent Shallow says:

The odd thing is, he hadn’t put up a “holy shit, this fucking guy” season until 2009. 2006-2008 weren’t bad, but they weren’t quite dominant.

(His current ERA+ is 95. I hope the Yankees can push it into the 80s)

  6. Rose says:

Did you ever find out why RAB doesn’t allow posts with Mantle’s first name in the comment box? Just curious. I saw that you wrote you were looking into it. If you haven’t found anything yet that’s cool…just pretty strange haha

  7. Jason from The Heartland says:

    Hi, everyone.

    They’re playing today.

Let’s Go, Yankees! (clap clap, clap-clap-clap)

  8. Jason from The Heartland says:

Jeter needs to rectify his going 4 for his last 39. Let it start today.

    • boogie down says:

He’s actually hit the ball relatively well over that stretch (esp. in Detroit) but BABIP hasn’t exactly been his best friend recently

  9. charles poet says:

I don’t feel bad for anyone else getting bad weather. We just had 4 inches of snow the last day and a half in Denver. But my garden and roses survived.

  10. Yankees on MLB Network with the YES broadcast. Awesome. HD for me.

  11. First Time Poster says:

I didn’t check, but did yesterday’s first game go unbelievably quick?

Also, why did Baltimore and Seattle start so early today?

  12. Dela G says:

    attaboy jetes

  13. First Time Poster says:

  14. Dela G says:

great at-bat for the gritster, regardless of the outcome

  15. First Time Poster says:

6 of 9 Yankee position players are from the farm system… but yeah… bunch of god damn mercs!

  16. Dela G says:

    great job gritster

  17. Dela G says:

    that changeup is filthy

  18. Dela G says:

damn, any other park and that’s gone

  19. ecksodia says:

    There goes the no-no.

  20. Patrick says:

Boy, it is painful to hear Sterling pronounce chipotle.

  21. ShuutoHeat says:

Justttttttt got back from field work, how are things looooking?

  22. charles poet says:

The way the Yankees aren’t hitting verlander, that could be the game

  23. charles poet says:

  24. Rose says:

Winn, Golson, and Miranda taking up 3 spots in a lineup against Verlander? This one could be mailed in soon…

  25. Evan in NYC says:

I feel like we are the Mets this year with injuries…

    • mike c says:

      except we have good pitching

      • Jrrp says:

Someone should forward that good pitching comment to our pitching staff, just to fill them in….

        • mike c says:

ah come on, cc and aj are allowed a couple stinkers if we’ve won 22 so far

          • Jrrp says:

In our last 19 games we’ve had 2 seperate stretches now where we’ve lost 4 out of 5 (this one’s over), that to me just doesn’t speak to good pitching.

            • mike c says:

we’ve had mitre, JV (the offense lost the game, not the pitching), hughes, and a rare CC stinker. We have the best starting rotation now with phil huge and the promising return of JV’s fastball, the best bullpen highlighted by the best setup and closer in the game

              • mike c says:

when arod wakes up, this team will be unstoppable

              • Jrrp says:

You can’t be serious when you say the best bullpen, I’ll give us Mo and a great Joba so far, but have you seen any of the games where the rest of our bullpen has had to pitch?? Really??

  26. Sean C says:

Anyone else think Valverde looks like an evil video game boss when he strikes someone out? Like one of the dudes from Mike Tyson’s Punchout for NES when you land the second to last punch that will knock him out, he freaks out and bounces around the ring. http://strotty.files.wordpress.....lverde.jpg (safe)

  27. ecksodia says:

Isn’t Verlander’s pitch count up there already? Then again, that bullpen…

  28. Tank the Frank says:

Hey look A-Rod grounded out to 3rd.

  29. mike c says:

why can’t hughes pitch every day already, jeez

  30. Jrrp says:

So much for our “ace”, CC’s fall to mediocrity continues, live on YES!

  31. mike c says:

BAD CC! Don’t go all lebron on us!

  32. mike c says:

oddly enough CC is doing well with his pitches 79 compared to verlanders 100

  33. Welcome to the bigs, Ivan!

  34. Dela G says:

    that was a filthy curveball

  35. pat says:

That was a nasty hook, Ivan.

  36. Dela G says:

    good first inning for nova

worked himself out of a jam

  37. Brian in NH says:

not too enthused by this outing by CC….i thought we’d manage a series split.

    • JGS says:

CC through 8 starts last year: 3.70 ERA, 1.214 WHIP
CC through 8 starts this year: 3.71 ERA, 1.238 WHIP

He was fine last year, he will be fine this year

    • JohnnyC says:

It looks worse because he gave up 6 runs but, honestly, Verlander against a sub-par Yankees line-up was going to be a tough task anyway. On his game, Verlander’s probably better than CC straight up. A lot of things conspired — injuries and the weather foremost — to make this a lost series. It’s a long season. Shit happens.

      • Brian in NH says:

I know…overall he’s still fine. I’m sure as teh summer rolls on he’ll be fine. but its always a little disheartening to see your ace give up 6. I know its unrealistic but i think we always want our ace to be unbeatable.

  38. What happened to Zumaya’s control problems? Career 5.4 BB/9 and 1.71 K/BB before this season, 0.9 BB/9 and 12.0 K/BB this season.

Fluke because of the SSS? Or did something click?

  39. WIlliam says:

    No fucking way.

  40. Apollo22237 says:

Can we please just get this game over and leave this place behind…

  41. pat says:

Detroit has played some good and lucky D this series. Oh well.

  42. Fuck you, Don Kelly.

  43. WIlliam says:

We just need 6 runs in the 9th, where have I heard this one before?

  44. WIlliam says:

Wow, crappy offense this series. Oh well.

    • Brian in NH says:

with johnson, granderson, posada and now swisher all feeling little “tugs” or whatever…its tough to keep the offense hot all the time. Tex and A-rod are starting to come around and Cano is starting to come back to earth a little. a perfect storm for a few down offensive games if you will…

  45. Jrrp says:

I look forward to talking to everybody over this homestand. Good times all.

  46. dkidd says:

i predict this will be the single lowest comment total for a game all year
