Romine keeps hit streak alive in loss

By

Both Corban Joseph and Brandon Laird made Kevin Goldstein’s Future Shock column today. It’s a subscriber only piece, but here’s a little of what he had to say…

CoJo: “Joseph’s bat is by far his best tool, as he has only gap power, average speed, and merely acceptable defense up the middle, but he’s a good enough hitter that it should carry him to the big leagues.”

Laird: “Laird’s bat is his only tool, as he’s a below-average runner with solid-at-best defensive skills, and no matter how well he plays, he’s never going to man a corner for the Yankees. Still, he’s a prospect that has taken a step forward, and scouts are taking notice, so he could be a decent trade chip come July.”

Triple-A Scranton (9-1 loss to Durham)
Greg Golson, CF: 1 for 5, 1 K
Reegie Corona, 3B & Jeff Natale, 2B: both 0 for 4 – Natale K’ed & committed a throwing error
Eduardo Nunez, SS: 2 for 3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB – had been two for his previous 16 (.125)
David Winfree, 1B: 2 for 4, 1 2B, 1 RBI – five of his last seven hits have been doubles
Jon Weber, DH, Jesus Montero, C & Reid Gorecki, RF: all 0 for 3, 1 BB - Gorecki K’ed twice & threw a runner out at third
Colin Curtis, LF: 1 for 4, 1 K – first game back from his ankle sprain … Grant Duff was sent down to make room on the roster
Ivan Nova: 5 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 5 K, 6-2 GB/FB – 59 of 93 pitches were strikes (63.4%) … 25 baserunners & 13 runs allowed in 13.1 IP since being send back down
Mark Melancon: 1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 2-0 GB/FB – 17 of his 33 pitches were strikes (51.5%) … first runs he’s allowed in the minors since May 6th
The Ghost of Kei Igawa: 3 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 2-3 GB/FB – 39 of 60 pitches were strikes (65%) … he even flirted with 85 on the stadium gun

Double-A Trenton (3-0 loss to New Hampshire)
Justin Christian, LF, Austin Krum, CF & Brandon Laird, 3B: all 0 for 4
Austin Romine: 1 for 4 – 12 game hit streak
Dan Brewer, RF: 1 for 3, 1 2B, 1 K – threw a runner out at the plate
Edwar Gonzalez, DH & Luis Nunez, SS: both 0 for 3 – Edwar K’ed twice, Nunez once
Marcos Vechionacci, 1B: 0 for 2, 1 BB
Kevin Mahoney, 2B: 2 for 3, 1 E (fielding)
D.J. Mitchell: 5 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 2 Balk, 5-7 GB/FB – picked a runner off first … ERA sits at 4.99, but his FIP is 4.01
Wilkins Arias: 2 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 1-3 GB/FB
Eric Wordekemper: 1 IP, 1 H, zeroes, 3-0 GB/FB

High-A Tampa and the rest of the Florida State League enjoyed Memorial Day with a scheduled off day.

Low-A Charleston‘s game against Kannapolis was canceled due to rain. They’re not going to make the game up, hence canceled instead of postponed.

Please take down the Montero Watch, those numbers are hard to look at.

    Laugh or cry?

  3. Does Curtis’s return mean less PT for Huffman?

  4. CapitalT says:

Is Lassiter still a Yankee. I saw he wasn’t on Charlston’s roster

  5. James says:

Why is Montero struggling so much in AAA after dominating all the lower levels. Is he healthy or just being overmatched by AAA pitchers?

    • Brad Toughy says:

Him being 20 probably has something to do with it. Not every prospect is Miguel Cabrera. If he takes two full seasons in AAA and then joins the big league club fulltime and mashes for 12 to fifteen years, I think most fans would be okay with that. Development ftw.

  6. Adam says:

What’s the deal with DeLeon? Is he hurt? Or Extended Spring?

  7. Clemson Rob says:

Oh how the times have changed. We once paid good money for the Ghost of Kei Igawa and now we don’t take the chance on the cough :possibly older: cough, Aroldis Chapman. Oh well, it could be worse, we could still have Carl Pavano, right :) Go Yankees!

  8. Clemson Rob says:

PS. Did Joe West somehow ump Trenton’s game? 2 balks, really?

  9. YankeeFan says:

Hey Mike, if Laird and Romine continue to wake into say mid to late June, do you see them being promoted? Maybe move Laird around the corners in the infield and try him out at one of the corners in the outfield to see if he can have a future with the big league club or at least enhance his trade status and go back to the DH/C platoon that Montero and Romine did a couple of years back all season at Charleston and started out doing in Tampa last season before Montero got promoted? Competition is not the worst thing and I’m sure they are fighting to see who gets to the show first.

  10. My Pet Goat says:

Can you please not lump Montero in with other hitters like, “Jon Weber, DH, Jesus Montero, C & Reid Gorecki, RF: all 0 for 3″, or at least list him first? When I’m quickly scanning DOTF, I always have a moment of panic when I don’t see Montero listed.

  11. Rob Has No Innings Limit says:

Well shit. Looks like I jinxed Nova with my enthusiasm tonight. I will never be enthusiastic about MiLB baseball again.

    /half-kidding’d

  12. Staten Island has released a chunk of tickets for their opening day 6/18. I recommend going for a great time!

They’ll be raising the baby championship banner and all that and they have some interesting guys on the roster this year.
