Yankees recall Chad Moeller, shift Nick Johnson to 60-day DL
ByVia Jack Curry, the Yankees have recalled catcher Chad Moeller from Triple-A Scranton to help carry the load while Jorge Posada is out with a hairline fracture in a his foot. Nick Johnson was shifted to the 60-day disabled list to free up a spot on the 40-man roster. The 35-year-old Moeller was signed to a minor league deal at the end of Spring Training to mentor top prospect Jesus Montero in Scranton, and he’s hit just .207-.233-.310 in limited playing this year.
You probably remember Moeller from his 2008 stint with the team, when he hit .231-.311-.330 in 103 plate appearances. Frankie Cervelli figures to get the majority of the playing time behind the plate now, and I assume P.J. Pilittere will take Moeller’s spot in SWB.

Any idea on what the move will be when jorge hits the DL, if he hasnt already?
This is it. They’ll make another move when they send a pitcher down, probably for an outfielder. They might even make another move on top of that if they decide to DL Thames.
This is the move for Jorge going on the DL, no? Johnson’s move to the 60-day DL was just to open a 40-man spot for Moeller. Moeller is taking Jorge’s spot, the next move is that a reliever goes down for an outfielder.
Actually, it’s probably not. This is probably the move for a pitcher being sent down. They have to use Jorge going on the DL to recall Russo/Golson since it hasn’t been 10 days since they were demoted.
Yeah that’s right, my bust on that one. Unless they get frisky and pass over Russo & Golson for Huffman, and swap a RP for him.
Because Posada was Dl’d, MLB can waive that rule.
My money is on Chad Huffman.
We should have traded for Ivan Rodriguez.
Not sure if serious…
My poor attempt at showing how the Yankees made the right decision failed. Trading for a temporary fix or calling up Montero would have been rash and Mets-like.
why not Jose Molina?
No point. Jorge is back in a few weeks and carrying 3 catchers is silly. Unless Jorge becomes the full-time DH. Which…idk…interesting.
I would love to see Jorge Get some serious DH time once hes back, Once the yanks are all healed up you could have a pretty dangerous lineup that looks like,
SS Jeter
CF Gardy
1B Tex
3B Alex
2B Robbie
DH PO
LF Granderson
RF Swish
C Cervelli
Bench
Thames
Moeller
Pena
Huffman/Golson (Winn has go to leave im sorry)
But the Pen will need to be addressed… if Ace is going to be out for a while, Cash better be calling up San Diego (Latin for a whales Vagina) to see if Bell is available, which I’m sure he is.
i agree with everything you said except,
“You probably remember Moeller from his 2008 stint with the team, when he hit .231-.311-.330 in 103 plate appearances”.
I’d change that to,
“You probably FORGOT Moeller from his 2008 stint with the team, when he hit .231-.311-.330 in 103 plate appearances.
Just out of curiosity, wouldn’t P.J. Pilittere be a better option? I have no idea about his offense/defense, but Chad Moeller isn’t all that special…
The Org doesn’t appear to think so since he’s been phantom DLed for much of the season.
I wanted to love the Johnson for Matsui switch… Sigh
Matsui is currently hitting .224/.304/.378
Don’t think there’s been a “winner” declared yet.
not being hurt > being hurt
being below replacement player < being hurt
+1
yeah because matsui is obviously going to put up that line all year. what a thought, nick johnson must be rolling around in his grave right now
Do you know what Matsui is going to do? Do you know he’s going to stay healthy?
i don’t know anything. i think he will be comparable to last year with a slight decline in production due to support staff and age/health
Ok, so you don’t know. Neither does anyone.
Sucking can be worse than being hurt. At least if you’re hurt the team can bring in someone to replace you (and it’s not that hard to find a DH with an OPS over .682). When you’re just sucking it’s hard to justify releasing you – just look at Griffey in Seattle. I’m sure they’d love it if he pulled a hamstring and could go on the DL.
Fun fact: Damon and Matsui are hitting .154-.269-.236 combined in their last 145 plate appearances.
If they were on the Yanks, people would be bitching that they were washed up and Cash was stupid for resigning him.
they would be known quantities to us so we would understand their production. same reason we give tex a free pass
i’m pretty sure NJ only exists on paper
Did Nick Johnson kick your dog?
yeah, and he broke his foot while doing it
The Yankees sign Moeller in 2008 to a minor league deal, and shortly afterwards Posada goes down with an injury so Moeller gets called up.
In 2010, the Yankees sign Moeller to another minor league deal, and shortly afterwards Posada goes down with an injury so Moeller gets called up.
Coincidence? I think not.
not a big chad moeller fan here..and by that i mean i don’t like him one bit…but i didn’t want Jesus anywhere near the bigs yet either.
So i’ll live through Moeller for 3 weeks.
“…Johnson to 60-Day DL”
I had been praying since February that I’d never have to read those words. Sigh, get better Nick.
Meh, I would rather see what Miranda can do with the bat anyway.
Be curious…but certainly don’t hold your breath…
“rather” might be strong, it is a bit of a silver lining that he gets an extended look.
That’s assuming Girardi doesn’t feel compelled to use a rotating DH. I understand giving Jeter, Alex, and Tex some 1/2 days off here and there, but El Nino needs fewer AB’s, not more.
For now (the next 2-3 weeks?) I think the best move for Girardi and the Yankees would be to keep an OF of Winn, Gardy, Swisher and use the DH spot to play Miranda vs RHP and Thames vs LHP.
But deep down inside you knew you would.
Granderson can’t get back soon enough…
Joh-nny Da-Mon clap clap clap-clap clap
You really think he can catch?
He probably allow the most stolen bases ever . . . well, actually third after Victor Martinez and Matt LeCroy. But he’d be bad.
He’d make Frank Robinson openly weep.
Cash$ offered a 2yr, $14M deal and he turned it down. Then he was offered a 1yr, $6M and he turned it down again so the Yanks went in a different direction, get over it.
different direction = hello randy winn! thanks cash
Johnny Damon has nothing to do with the thread, nor the Yankees. Give it a rest.
wait…you just had a Damon tweet.
oh right, i forgot he didn’t play for the yankees. on a related note, if the tigers start tanking later this season there is a possiblity that damon will be a trade target, and possibly a nice acquisition
He’s not playing for the Yanks now, is he? Why not talk about Miguel Cairo, or Jose Molina? You bring Damon/Matsui up every damn day, it’s tiresome.
well sorry, i will work on that. but i’m bitter and venting that two of my fav players aren’t on the team. and after all the damon sucks/matsui’s exploding knees vomit that i read all winter, this is light commentary. and for the record i didn’t mention damon here, i was talking about the randy winn gamble
randy winn gamble
What Randy Winn gamble? He was signed to be the 4th (or maybe even 5th) outfielder. He’s managed that quite well.
Betting the next move is Melancon back down and Huffman up. How many options does Melancon have left, anyway? Seems he’s been riding the Scranton Shuffle for the past couple years.
its one option per year….he was already going to be using an option this year.
So this means Boone Logan will still be a major league player. I’m not sure what Girardi sees in that bum.
Via Jack Curry, the Yankees have recalled catcher Chad Moeller from Triple-A Scranton
This team is just one Royce Clayton away from a championship…
I really hope The Mets are in rare fail form this weekend, I know if they even take 1 game they’ll be bragging about it for weeks no matter if Jeter & Gardner are the only regular starters left or not.
I really hope The Mets are in
raretypical fail form this weekendFixed.
Why not grab Pat the Bat and see if he can fill in better than below-average AAA OFers or at least be the RH DH until Thames regains his ability to not trip over his own bat/drop little league fly balls.
When will be be a FA?
Because at this point of his career he is really Pat No Bat.
Moeller did surprisingly well for the Orioles in the few games that he played last year.
melancon on the chris britton memorial shuttle to scranton yet again. REALLY hoping he gets extended major league playing time soon. i think it’s time we find out if he’s a AAAA pitcher or someone who needs a solid shot.
