Game 63: Sweep the ‘Stros
ByThe series win is already in the bag, but today is a big day in Yankeeland regardless. Jorge Posada is starting behind the plate for the first time since coming off the disabled list, and for the first time overall since May 16th. Frankie Cervelli is a fine player, but I think it was abundantly obvious over the last four weeks that he’s not much more than a backup at this point in time. There’s a chance he’ll be more in the future, but that time is not now.
Assuming Posada catches nine innings this afternoon without incident, the team will monitor how his foot reacts tomorrow, and then give him a two or three more starts behind the plate before feeling comfortable enough to let Chad Moeller go. The last thing they want to do is cut Moeller only to have Posada’s foot react in an unexpected way. Let’s all hope he passes this test with flying colors.
Aside from that, just sit back and watch Phil Hughes do his thing against on of the worst offenses in the game. This should be a treat.
Here is your lineup…
Jeter, SS
Granderson, CF
Teixeira, 1B
Cano, 2B
Swisher, DH
Posada, C
Gardner, LF
Huffman, RF – big league debut
Pena, 3B
And on the mound, St. Phil.
The game is set to begin at 1:05pm ET, and you can catch it on YES as (almost) always. Enjoy.

get em’ huff!!
Unless another injury takes place in which the DL is not required, I expect Moeller to stay with the Yankees until the interleague games are done in LA.
i guess swisher and granderson are going to be switched depending on whether the starter is left handed or right handed.
Alex needs to return to the lineup soon. Hopefully he’ll be fine for the series against the Phillies.
my prediction
yankees 8
astros 3
You don’t believe in St. Phil’s ability to shutout a punchless Houston lineup?
i expect gaudin to give up a run or two
I was thinking Phil would go seven and hand it off to Mitre.
If they can’t reach double digits with Brian Moehler starting, the offense is a lot worse off than I thought.
…and it looks like they won’t. Disgraceful.
If we scored nine runs in every game, like we did in this game, we would score near 1500 runs. I would not complain about that.
i am watching the astros live pregame show, and they say that berkman is out for this game
should be fun
Considering how he’s been hitting of late, his replacement is probably more dangerous.
I LOL’d at the caption. Although admittedly how cool would it be to see Mo parachute in while “Enter Sandman” blares?
Anything less than a first pitch, first at-bat grand slam and huffman is a bust!
so a three run homer ain’t good enough for you. I want him to go 4 for 3 with six homers, four doubles, and 35 RBIs. he also should have six walks and no K’s with an OBP of 6.000 or we should trade him for a bag of balls.
i don’t think he can beat what youk did once…

My favorite Onion story about Youkilis:

(NSFW or sanity but hilarious)
holy shit
Huff, Huff, give. Huff, Huff, give.
hopefully the kid can impress some people today
Cleveland and Washington is on TBS. I wonder who’s pitching?
Tyler Clippard?
Any chance the Yanks could take Mike Lowell off the Red Sox hands? With Arod’s health concerns I think Lowell would look better in the line-up than Pena. Or would the Sox never let him go to the Yanks?
I want no part of Mike Lowell playing the field.
a. I don’t really want Lowell playing the field.
b. Did you not see the article right below this?
No thanks for pointing it out…
Man, why does Strasburg Day always fall on Hughes Day?
Michael Bourn is fast
The Black Brett Gardner
Very athletic
What the fuuck? That isn’t interference?
Agree.
One thing I learned recently…
Interference = the defense’s fault
Obstruction = the offense’s fault
Ah ok, and obstruction gets called even less frequently than catchers interference. Oh well.
Just bad luck. Lee has every right to stand there.
I guess they forgot to work on throwing to third during the catching drills.
Nice deflection by Lee there. Yikes.
hahahahahahah did that just happen?
only Jorge
fuck i hate when we give up runs in the first fucking inning
What in the world was that? o_O
Time for the offense to make things very unpleasant for Brian Moehler.
this team is going to run all over jorge
They will have to get on base to run.
Phil let Bourn get into his head a little there, but his stuff looked good.
let’s hope phil settles down real soon then
settle down an infield hit and a walk he wasn’t exactly hammered out there
Settle down from what? He was off for one batter on the walk.
Bourn should not even have been on base. Less than a handful of guys are safe on that groundball.
Meh. They have 32 stolen bases as a team, which is toward the bottom of the league. Bourn has 20 of them.
lets be honest every team runs all over Jorge age + injurues its just what happens
Teams ran all over Cervelli too.
NO!!!!! Cervelli was the most perfect defensive catcher ever!
Who can Houston really send running except for Bourne? They aren’t exactly the fastest team in the league…
haha I had forgotten about who had the sand paper
atta boy jete!
Yay. Another moron umpire.
fuck him now crush it
Can we go 15 freaking minutes without Michael Kay making a yes-mo joke?
of course
lol Tex. You could here his reaction at the fly to CF.
Did anyone see Tex mouth, “I’ll give you $50,000 if I’m lying.”
Trying to bribe an umpire? We are the new Black Sox.
/clearly kidding, but sometimes you have to spell these things out.
You know, the ump did blow that call but I give him credit for calmly letting Tex jaw at him on the way back to the dugout. Lost of umps (Angel Hernandez, for example) would’ve goaded Teixeira into getting himself tossed.
So true and so sad. Most umps are douches.
If I had Tex’s hair I’d be angry too.
Though angry Tex = some Astros player is going to die today.
I hope he crushes the Astros pitching staff to the tune of 3 HR in his next 3 ABs.
I miss the old hairdo.
At least Robbie gets to lead off the inning.
well that inning sucked
well fuck not the best offensive inning ever
Im on gameday, what happened between Tex and the ump?
Got hit on the back foot by a breaking ball in the dirt. Ump said it didn’t hit him Tex was pissed. Then he flew out on the next pitch and yelled at the ump some more afterward.
Maybe Kay should learn to not blow his load on no-hitters lol
haha I was really hoping that O’Neill would chide Kay about “baseball etiquette” and set off another slavery rant
Phil says “Fuck yo sac fly. You get nothing else.”
Strasburg with 18 K’s in his first nine innings. Damn.
Well its not often that a pitcher gets to go from AAA to AAAA before entering the majors.
dude its not just about the teams hes faced. hes fucking ridiculous
I know, but I doubt he has 18 K’s if he faces the Yankees and Phillies as his first 2 starts. Just sayin’. I will be the first to say his stuff is otherwordly, just the quality of the batters is not that high.
If he faced the current Phillies he’d probably have 20 Ks in one game. =P I’m inviting bad karma by posting this, aren’t I?
would you guys rather have gardner or bourn? personally i feel like theyre basically the same player
Gardner’s a bit better at the dish
Gardner has better plate discipline, less strikeouts, better SB percentage, and isn’t completely demolished by lefties.
I don’t think they’re the same player at all.
Gardner, but only because he’s younger (and by a year at that). He also has better contact rates.
good inning hughes
now lets get it going offense!!!
wtf guys come on!
Teh bullshit!
This HP ump is baaaaaad.
this ump is determined to keep this chump pitcher in the game
strike 3 to cano caught the corner. strike 3 to swisher…not so much.
i’d bet money that girardi explodes on this ump before the game ends.
What a terrible job by another HP umpire.
I honestly don’t understand how someone can call a pitch in the other batter’s box. Aren’t they supposed to be watching the plate?
The umpiring system is completely broken and just instituting replay is not going to fix it. Most of these guys are completely incompetent and there is little if any incentive for them to be better.
MLB finally did something by finally getting rid of Solomon who supervises the umpires, so hopefully that is a step in the right direction.
With all the love between our guys and the ump, this is really going to be a fun game…
C’mon lets not get lit up by a 85 mph pitcher
We’re not even done with the second inning.
Yea, I’m talking about the second inning not projecting the entire game
Yuh-huh.
Pssshh, whatever
I can forsee ugliness with the umpire in this game.
Let’s start taking bets on which Yankee gets tossed today.
$10 on girardi
Tex, particularly if he gets another crap call. Girardi immediately afterwards.
OK, that’s obvious. I guess I should have said Yankee other than Girardi.
I say Teixeira. When he’s pissed, he’s pissed. I think he started a riot during an interleague game against the Giants when he was with Texas.
Really? Anyone have video on that?
This is it I think:
http://mlb.mlb.com/media/playe.....0&v=2
Just too awesomely funny.
That was fuckin awesome.
damnit another shitty inning
2nd time through the lineup should be fun.
Swisher’s still pissed off, he’s bitching to Girardi in the dugout.
.186 hitter gets a single
wow
Baseball is a funny game like that sometimes.
Holy crap that was a nice play from Ramiro.
Why oh why did Strasburg have to occupy the same slot in the rotation as Hughes? It makes for very conflicted baseball watching.
That was scary.
Reply fail. Sorry.
A-who?
Don’t get carried away. Remember this play? http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play......id=7366379
lol, hyperbole
I know. I was just going along with your joke.
Oh man, I totally blew it
Ump calls a big outside corner to lefties, and doesn’t call pitches on the actual corner to righties?
Argh.
so what, the outside corner is only good for moehler?
Pence really was determined to ground out to third.
debut AB for huffman
come on!!
Aw, proud mom and dad.
Aw his parents look so nervous. Cute.
Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh Chad!
Hustleman!
love the handle, dude
Thank you, sir
Sterling just JIHP’d on that inf single.
Huffman got his first hit. Good for him.
good job huff first career hit!
Now VERY proud mom and dad! WTG Chad!
lol, O’Neill just said Pena could ‘drive’ a ball.
Yeah right…
go figure pena
its getting to a point he doesnt even need to come to the plate anymore bc its going to result in an out
He seems to be “pesky” and make the guy throw 4-5 pitches, though.
damn
Strasburg just walked fellow top prospect Carlos Santana for his first ever walk allowed. Will this at bat be remembered in both of their Hall of Fame inductions???????
/keep it in your pants MLB network’d
IETCVM.
You’re going to have to spell that out. That’s a term with which I’m not familiar.
I enjoyed this comment very much.
OK, thanks!
Answer: Lance Berkman and Roy Oswalt.
What was the question?
Missed the question. What was it?
What was the question? I missed it.
The question was what National League teammates have played the most consecutive seasons.
Lame. They asked a similar question a few weeks ago.
Well they’ve had a couple so far that they’ve given wrong answers, so stick with what works, I guess?
Got away with a hanger there…
Even Happy Pete will hit hanging curveballs hard.
ok let’s try this again offense!
I’m pretty sure that Tex was thinking about clubbing the ump with his bat after that strike one call
Tex is particularly frustrated today.
This happens EVERY time I have a chance to sit down and watch a game…zero offense. This is an utter disgrace against a guy on his last MLB legs with a 6+ ERA coming in and is basically a punching bag. Disgraceful in that there hasn’t even been a hard hit ball against Moehler all day.
…as soon as I hit Submit…there goes Cano. Still would like to see some sustained rallies against this team…not just a few bloops and blasts.
you were saying …
You were literally one minute early for Cano’s blast.
Clearly, you have some sort of reverse jinxing powers. Would you mind posting similar rants in the future?
Is there a better example of confirmation bias than when the Yanks don’t pound a bad pitcher?
Sob sob.
Kinda funny that you’re saying this the day after we scored nine runs.
I feel his pain. During that Indians series, particularly the game they blew, I thought I was a jinx because I hadn’t watched them win a game in a long time. Then they won the next game.
don’t ya know
Cano baby!! Best hitter in baseball!!
MVP! MVP! MVP!
What is Justin Morneau doing in New York?
booooooooooooooooooooooom
Robbie Cano is good. Brian Moehler isn’t.
The Volcano.
http://twitpic.com/1w6dm2
thank god cano
Hey, a hard hit ball.
Nice job Robbie!!!
oh come on swish! k’ing twice against this guy is embarrassing
Except he K’d looking on pitches in the other batter’s box. Can’t really blame him for that.
didn’t know about his first AB
Except that the first one wasn’t a K. But sure, two bad AB are totally embarrassing.
Swisher should Wally Backman Ted Barrett.
That would be epic.
That would be amazing.
Cano the veteran now!! Gotta love this.
Who’d have thunk that in September ’08?
By the way, what ever happened to all that “What will Cano do without Melky around?” talk?
Yea, exactly.
And Melky has been hot of late, bringing his numbers within respectability.
He’s got a looooooong way to go though…
Gritty walk
I think he was just telling Pena to NEVER touch his seat on the bench again. And if he does, he’ll be sleeping with the fishes.
You noticed how he was in a different seat the next time the camera went back there…
hahaha … you never know with baseball players
that was closer than three or four of the corner calls that moehler’s gotten today. this strike zone has no consistency at all
I just love consistently inconsistent strike zones.
Who has the better batting average by years end. Austin Jackson or Gardner?
Gardner. Higher AVG, OBP, and more HRs than Jackson will.
Austin Jackson, but Gardy will have the higher OBP.
Ball 3 was an exact overlay of strike 1, per Gameday.
This ump is clearly not that sharp, as evidenced by the Tex call.
cano’s HR swing almost looks griffey-esque
Yea, he’s got that “immediately drop the bat and take a couple of slow steps whilst admiring the blast” part of Griffey’s swing down pat.
Is it bad that I’m not a fan of that? I dislike it in general, but at least with vets and superstars like Manny and A-Rod, they’re some of the best ever. Cano was barely replacement level two years ago.
I never liked it with Griffey because I hated Griffey for his utter cockiness, and thought that HR trot exemplified it.
Cano was 1.2 WAR in ’08 according to B-R.
I’m not a fan of it either. At all.
yeah maybe if he wasn’t a yankee i’d hate it– although cano does have more hits at his age than jeter did, we may be talking about the future captain here
Hughes doesn’t wrap his arm up between inning?!
Well it’s kind of beside the point when the towel would just end up in flames.
good job gardy
come on huff!
One ball away from Ramiro Pena coming up with the bases loaded.
It’s okay, he’s like four for five in those spots in his career. 80% chance he gets a hit.
/sarcasm
Your slavish devotion to statistics is once again correct!
Yeah Huff.
He’s just pitching around guys to get to Pena…
lol, bases loaded with Pena is hilarious
You spelled “tragic” incorrectly.
woooooooooooooooooooooooo
wooo 3 straight BB’s
too bad that pena is next though
Grand slam by… Pena? Unlikely the score goes up.
I was wrong.
Pena!!!!!
bad baserunning. still, i’ll take any hit from ramiro pena we can get.
Two runs is nice, but that was some terrible baserunning…
Yay Ramiro. And did Kay really all that a line drive?
It’s Michael Kay. He has problems judging flies that are 30 feet in front of the wall.
Lol Huff.
aww poor huffman lol
but good job pena
Kid lost his head on the base paths; oh well. Anytime that Gardner/Huffman/Pena can turn into two runs with two outs on the scoreboard, I’ll take it.
Nice Pena! But a screw-up by huffman getting thrown out with the top of the order coming up.
this strike zone is infuriating
girardi is getting tossed from this game before we’re done here. he looks ready to explode.
you can’t take the outside corner away from hughes after some of the calls that moehler’s gotten. that’s ridiculous.
Where da fuck was that pitch!!!!
Holy shit this ump is blind!!!
Where the hell did that miss? Stupid ump.
Wait, Cash struck out twice in that AB yet he gets a BB.
Consistently inconsistent.
This ump is killing me. Calling Cano and Swish out on balls in the other batting box, and Hughes can’t get a call IN the zone!
whats up with Hughes not being able to retire Cash?
Ugh…
Tex rushed that shit to try and double up Bourne.
Agreed.
This is the first time I have ever seen Tex commit an error. No joke.
http://www.brooksbaseball.net/.....type=3.gif
Phil vs Cash… Walk hahaha
damnit tex
Tex ain’t havin’ the greatest day.
Tex ain’t havin’ the greatest year.
Yea, not so far. You know he is going to explode at some point though. Don’t let this prolonged slump fool you. He is still one of the best players in baseball.
I agree, but unless he completely tears the cover off the ball like Alex 2007, he’s probably going to have a down year. It’s expected at this point. But I agree that he is still one of the best players in the game.
Jeter sat back waiting WAY too long on that…
can’t really run into the batter’s way, though. That’s interference.
another blown call–bourne was safe there.
i’ll take that one though
Ooh, benefit of a bad call.
Bourn was totally safe.
Oh. I know we all like to complain about Halos Heaven and the like, but has anyone ever been to the SB Nation site for the Astros? It’s called Crawfish Boxes or something like that and oh my gosh it’s like not a real baseball site. Everyone there is so… nice. And rational. Like, they were like, “Oh, it’s nice to see Pettitte!” and not cursing and/or accusing every Yankee of being on steroids and then they acknowledged some calls might have gone FOR them. What the…?
Haha, yeah I was creepin at that place before. It’s like a ghost town, and they’re exceedingly nice. BTW what do crawfish boxes have to do with the Astros?
Those poor fans. Why can’t there be a good team with mostly good fans?
Ha, because extremely rational fans are tough to get a penny out of, while the Yahoos, Wackos and suckers are eager to part with their money.
Man, some shoddy umpiring this inning
is phil throwing that wild or is this ump that bad?
a little of both. hughes definitely doesn’t have his best stuff today but the strike zone is almost random at this point.
If Hughes gets a K here, the place is gonna explode.
The Bourn Alacrity
Usually the players are a little sluggish for afternoon games, but today, the umps are the sluggish ones. This time to the Yanks advantage thankfully.
perfect fastball. way to battle hughes.
Phil Hughes is pretty freakin’ good.
phew good job hughes
Hughes is tha baddest. Unflappable. I could see Joba grooving Pence a FB after the missed K on Cash and the error by Tex. Instead, Phil goes beastmode.
As others have said, in 2008, between the bad umpiring and the Tex error, that’s a big, big inning. Not in 2010, though.
Can’t help but think that first AB took Tex totally out of this entire game, on both sides of the ball…
Dude is a professional. I doubt that and I’d actually be rather disappointed if it was the case.
He is also human.
You have a point. But I was at that game against Texas last year where he got HBP a few times and was INFURIATED, and he looked a lot better than this. Maybe he’s just having a bad day.
I actually agree. I think that completely threw him off his game. He completed exploded at the ump which is very uncharacteristic of him.
completely
I disagree. I just think he’s struggling against a changeup pitcher who’s getting strike calls on pitches in the opposite batters box
good point as well. He has a right to be frustrated
tex…today just isn’t your day buddy
come on swish!
man, a pitcher who works that slow must be Cano’s dream. Gives him time to take a little siesta between pitches.
Wait, it’s only Saturday? Sweet, I don’t have to go to work tomorrow.
you got my hopes up for a second
Well that’s what Michael Kay said!
/phony’d
Another brutal call on ball 3 (though Swish benefited this time at least.) This home plate ump really might be blind.
come on jorge!!
Mills is probably better off bringing Jenny Finch in here…
WHORE! HEY!
The end is near for Jorge…
HIP HIP
JORGE!
the end is really near. ;P
+1 haha
Are you kidding me, Jorge? Holy shit!
Wow
Two days in a row. Very nice job Posada. I love that guy. And today is the puerto rican day parade.
I thought the end was near…
man its good having Jorge and Grandy back
omg jorge!!!!! wooooooo!!
http://markontheworld.files.wo.....he-end.jpg
Jorge makes such a huge difference when he is behind the plate. As much credit as he has gotten over the years, he has probably not gotten enough.
2 grand slams in two days=beast
Posada > Beast
I’m a big fan of Paul O’Neill’s in the booth. I wish he did more games but I think Michael Kay always implies he does not want to work that much. Its a shame. YES should up their offer to him in order to get him to do more. I think he is worth it.
I agree entirely. He’s light years better than all the other non-Singleton color guys they’ve had over the past few years.
Not David Cone. That dude was both insightful and hilarious as a commentator. I still can’t believe YES fired him. Coney was the best.
O’Neill is good, though.
Yea. Loved Cone. Did they really fire him? Why? I thought he left for more money or something.
Also big fan of Singleton. Leiter and Flaherty put me to sleep although Leiter has tried to improve of late.
Girardi was also a snoozefest. I’m happy they finally found the right role for him in the organization, ha.
I was never a big fan of Cone’s. Flaherty is the worst though.
http://bats.blogs.nytimes.com/.....s-network/
That article says he stepped down, but I am pretty sure I read back in the winter that Cone and the bigwigs at YES didn’t get along. “Fired” was the wrong word nonetheless.
Also, the only YES commentator I dislike is Flaherty. He annoys me for whatever reason.
Is that what happened, YES fired him? I thought he just wanted too much money.
This. Love it when Paulie’s in the booth.
oh yea Paul O’Neill is the shit…However if him and Al Leiter ever work together there will be way too much food in the booth.
If by “food” you mean “awesome” then yes, yes, indeed.
I like Paulie. I would really love it if they could lure Leiter away from MLB network for more games, but that’s not really happening.
Huge fan of O’neill growing up and I love him in the booth. Also liked Cone in there too.
lol, first Pena then Jeter. Jorgie trying to tell them what to look for…
huffman is gritty lol
Mike was right. Mills definitely would have been better off bringing in Jennie Finch.
I wonder what it’s like to be Casey Daigle. On one hand, you’re married to Jennie Finch. On the other hand, you’d have to constantly know that your wife is better at her sport than you are at yours! Hopefully his ego can accept that.
He can ask Nomar Garciaparra.
Eh…maybe.
Nomar was really, really good for several years, though. Daigle has a 6.16 ERA in 64.1 career innings and hadn’t pitched in the majors for 4 years.
Nomar’s prime = Really really good
Mia Hamm’s prime = One of (if not)the best in the world
It’s really not up for debate that Mia Hamm was better at soccer than Nomar was at baseball. That’s the point of comparison.
nice day for huffman. this is another reason why i love baseball – individual moments like his make games against the houston fucking astros a treat.
this end is near stuff, did someone say Jorge was done or soemthing? because I can totally see someone saying that.
Someone did yesterday. I feel bad for whomever it was, because he/she has really been beaten over the head with it since.
good…I hate fans like that…its a slumping player coming off a broken bone…people need to use there brains sometimes, and when they don’t I hope they get bashed hard.
We’ve all said dumb things sometimes, but yeah … not a good idea to doubt any of the core four.
Nah, he acknowledged it was a stupid thing to say and said he expected all the mockery. That’s a good way to be, I think.
Yeah, he wasn’t a troll or anything like that.
well if you admit your wrong then yes good for him…I didn’t know that…I wasn’t around for yesterdays game much.
and yes i meant your not you’re lol
Yeah. It was Tank the Frank. But you didn’t hear it from me. It was cool, he pretty much admitted he was wrong afterwords, since 10 minutes later after that debate Posada hit the grandslam. It’s always fun to poke fun at people though.
Whats the fun of being a fan if you can’t overreact every once and while and say some regrettable stupid stuff.
The key is to recognize the stupidity of your comments after calming down a little. And reassessing.
Yeah that guy was a total asshole. The end is near?!!? Give me a break! 39-year-old catchers just DO NOT break down! It’s silly to even THINK IT! Am I right or am I right?
But yeah…it was me. As much as I appreciate being ridiculed by the entire RAB community after posting here for two years, I’ve decided to retire my original handle. I am now “Not Tank the Frank.”
I will now resume my position in the corner of my bedroom and continue to contemplate my life. Thank you.
Haha it’s cool.
Does Jeter go yard?
Nevermind…
A nice little game the Bombers got going here.
im hoping huff stays up for awhile
2 grannies in one inning all with 2 outs? too much?
damn sucky way to go out with the bases loaded
Jeter’s killing this team.
Hopefully Phil isn’t rusty after the long offensive inning.
so yea its looking like Phil and Andy are headed for 17-2…There is not a scenario in which I seen that coming before the season started.
I know this has probly been brought up earlier, but whats the word on Huffman? any kind of potential? I seen he was a 2nd round pick
nice try by Grandy
damn i thought grandy had it
Close there Grandy.
No rain = Granderson catch maybe? Eh nevermind, didn’t look like the rain was a factor.
I blame the rain. ;P
C’mon Phil…
Come on Hughes! Close out the inning before it’s a game again…
wow seriously this Manzella guy is annoying
good god, give up already
Foul ball after foul ball. Please just get the out.
Tommy Freakin’ Manzella??? Come on Hughes!!!
dang it jetes…
I hate Manzella.
I officially hate this Manzella guy
He was pissed when Mo struck him out and he’s been a pain ever since. it’s all mo’s fault.
Well that sucks.
Comon phil…you got this.
Not the best Phil Hughes today. Still good enough for the win though.
Did that really just happen?
I blame Jeter for that homerun.
wtf. now a breaking ball???
:headdesk: IT’S THE PATHETIC ASTROS, PHILIP, STOP MAKING THEM LOOK GOOD.
wow what the eff
plz take out hughes
Well this is all Paul O’Neill’s fault because he said that the game was out of reach.
Based on how Paulie would always practice his swing in the field, he seemed to have thought the game was out of reach on many occasions when the Yanks were pitching.
He said that right after the grand slam.
Hughes is getting shelled now. Girardi, retrieve him!
Son of a.
(starts a CALL THE GAME chant)
And thats how fast a good start turns into a poor one. Hughes just got Javy’d.
/just messing around.
A rain out would be nice now
And that completely erases the grand slam…
Not a pretty game for Hughes. They were hitting the ball pretty hard pretty often.
lol wut? We’re still winning.
When did I say we weren’t winning? They scored 4 runs here. The grand slam is 4 runs. It’s erased.
Whatever, that’s just a weird way to say it.
Get him out…
pitching to the score?
I blame Nick Johnson
6IP 1R > 6IP 5R
Makes it seem like Hughes pitched awful. This is upsetting.
Let’s not make excuses. He wasn’t particularly good through the first 5 innings and was pretty bad in the 6th.
Yeah, but all he needed was one out to get out of that inning. I’m just a big Hughes fan. Definitely wasn’t pitching great, but the damage control was great, now his numbers look tons worse.
He wasn’t as good as 6 IP 1 ER, but he wasn’t as bad as 5.2 IP 5 ER.
I guess. All I’m saying is that he wasn’t good today, but it happens. Everyone has an off-day someday.
Most likely just got tired. I can see Girardi giving him the job to finish the inning. Though, I would have thought Manzella would have been the last batter.
yeah i really didn’t get that one. You don’t keep a guy in at 110 pitches when he can’t put Manzella away for 10 pitches in a row in the rain.
Definitely looking back that would have been a nice time to take him out. Then again, you would like to expect him to retire Kevin Cash…
rain harder!!!
Hughes’ ERA is now over 3. DFA!!!!
lol im pretty sure, after all of the cupcakes the yanks will be playing through the ASB, he’ll have his ERA firmly in the 2.7′s.
But he got beat up by the ASTROS!!! ZOMG!
PANIC TIME!!!1111JUAN!!!11!
I’m pretty sure that’s the last time we will see Phil Hughes as a Yankee.
IS IT TOO LATE TO GET JOHAN SANTANA? Cash u teh idiot!!!!
Kind of makes me sad that his ERA is over 3 now.
i blame the rain for that. an under 3 ERA was nice while it lasted.
i hate it when run-scoring opportunities (see: jeter with bases loaded) in blow-out games come back to get you when the game ends up not having been a blow out afterall
i need to find out why he didnt throw something different to Manzella. im just a fan but it seems so obvious to do something else. it reminded me of the mo vs t. wolmack in the 01 world series. after 9 or 10 straight fbs throw something else. why would’nt you?
Phil’s ERA is over 3.00 now
Until he throws 7 scoreless against the Mets.
Marte has come around, nice.
Two or three is too young for your first ball game. Five is more like it.
wait, WHAT? My internet goes out, and it’s 7-5????
looks like it’s time for the yanks to get more runs
Wow, i thought that was out. Damn rain…
I totally thought that was looooong gone.
nice job texy
Very nice to answer right back.
Is the grand slam back now?
Just Jorge’s run.
A fly ball here would erase Cash’s homer though.
Or not.
That works though.
GGBG took care of it though.
Games like this make me believe the Yankees can score at will.
B-b-but I thought we were never going to hit these scrubs!
The curveball is Jorge’s greatest nemesis.
it’s like cocaine to this guy

just cant stay away
much better

Cocaine Dela?
Got something you want to talk about?
i can’t help it, i like crack :p
We should hang out sometime
Don’t forget about us!!
Posada? I heard this guy was meat…done. Gone the way of David Ortiz.
LMAO!
You my friend have my respect.
You are awesome for this by the way. Hee.
ietc
After this debacle I’m pretty certain Phil hughes will just retire and join the Slovakian World Cup team as an injury replacement. It’s the only thing that make sense.
Is this the longest game ever or what?
/Joe West’d
That reply was a disgrace
This game thread is a disgrace, it’s too long.
I believe this is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L.....ngest_game
tampa is down 5-1 in the 7th, can anyone smell first place?
I can! It smells like champagne, hookers, steaks, and blowjobs.
all conveniently located near yankee stadium
The advantages of playing in the Bronx.
the official escort service of the yankees, NYY skanks
When keeping it corporate goes wrong…
Ed Helms’ cousin Wes helping propel the Yanks into a first-place tie
Really? That’s neat.
It’s probably the only time Yankee fans should root for the Marlins.
I’ll never forget sleeping through Game 6.
Other than Games 2 and 3 that series sucked. So infuriating.
All I can remember about that series is watching Alex Gonzalez’s home run barely clearing the left field wall in Game 4, David Wells asking out of the game in the first inning of Game 5, and then suddenly waking up and realizing I had just probably missed Game 6. I quickly ran to the other room, turned on the TV, saw the Marlins celebrating, and turned it off immediately. I think that entire process took about 5 seconds.
I was seven years old in 03. The one thing I remember clearly is seeing Posada ground out to Beckett to end the Series. I remember everyone in the room being all downcast.
Yea, that probably sucked. Not as much as Game 7 of ’01, though.
I was working two jobs at the time and so was very tired when I came home that night. Also I had a very pessimistic outlook after they just flatlined during Game 5.
I remember Game 2 was such an overwhelmingly great victory and then Game 3 was a really good pitchers’ duel and I thought there was no way we could lose and then… sigh.
I always thought that is why they fell apart so easily. They thought they had it in the bag after Game 3 and after the way they lost Game 4, they just flatlined.
And they had already won the World Series in the series before, which didn’t help.
Indeed. Aaron Boone’s HR will be remembered more than anything from that World Series, a la Bobby Thomson in ’51.
That’s the first time I’ve seen those Yankees ponchos.
Ah, brings back great memories of being in Disney World when everyone goes and buys those horrible yellow-colored Mickey ponchos when it starts to rain.
You must not watch a lot of games. Then again, realize that you’re looking at pre-printed trash bags that can be sold for ten bucks apiece.
No, I can only watch on the weekends with my current schedule unless I take a day off.
And I don’t know if you’ve ever been to Disney World, but that’s essentially what their ponchos are, too, if maybe a tad more likely to keep you dry.
And the Mouse Hole charges $15 for theirs IIRC. It’s good to be king.
Is that what they’re up to now? I was last there 3 years ago, it rained for all of 1 hour of 1 day we were there (went in March, relatively dry), but my parents immediately overreacted and bought one for all of us when it started. I refused to wear mine, knowing it would be over soon.
I have a crapload of relatives (including my dad and sisters) in FL, went to the Mouse Hole in March. Fifteen bucks for ponchos. I got soaked and bought two cheese dogs at Casey’s Corner instead.
I’ve never gone to Casey’s Corner because the Unofficial Guide to Disney World has always maintained that the quality of the hot dogs doesn’t justify the cost.
The cheese is what makes the difference. It’s not a trip to Disney without a Casey’s Corner cheese dog.
Well, next time I go, I’ll have to remember this.
damn rich yankee fans, too good to wear a garbage bag with a hole in it
Question on NESN:
Who’s [sic] MLB debut was more impressive?
a. Daniel Nava
b. Stephen Strasburg
Between this and the question on SNY last night, FAAAAIL.
Well any time you can diminish someone else’s fantastic debut by being an extreme homer, you’ve gotta do it…
What a retahded question! Who dah hell is Steven Strahsburg?!?!?
/Sawx fan’d
Stras is six years younger and had the most impressive MLB debut EVER.
I don’t know. Marcus Thames hit a home run off a future Hall of Famer in his first at bat.
Stephen Strasburg faced a lineup with one potential future All-Star and a bunch of replacement level players.
Clearly ya gotta go with Thames.
/NESN imitation’d
ok seriously is there any legitimately talented player with an uglier swing than Hunter Pence? Why the fuck is he choking up? Use a smaller fucking bat and stop imitating David Eckstein. Jackass.
I don’t know about uglier, but Tex has a really poor swing for a guy that has accomplished so much in this game.
David Ortiz.
I agree actually, Tex’s swings are pretty ugly. But why would someone who can actually swing a bat choke up?
I have no clue. He probably tried it, had success with it, and never looked back.
I look at Tex like Happy Gilmore. What he does up there is completely unconventional, but when he is right, he dominates.
If even the slightest thing is off though, he has no chance.
Hunter Pence isn’t graceful, we know. No need to kill him for it.
Gritsky!
gardner = carl crawford lite
That was some type of grit
i’m so glad that we live in an era were baseball gloves are no longer just padded gloves
Pfffft, what an actor.
Johnny Damon makes that play look easy.
Iiiiii hope he didn’t do anything to his thumb when he hit the wall
Eh, Thames has that no problem.
Heh. IETC.
It’s a lot easier when you wait for it to stop rolling and pick it up.
great job by the grit ster
A tip of the hat goes out to Cole Hamels for stopping the bleeding today. Looks like the Phils should take 1 against the RS.
May they promptly go back to losing on Tuesday. Or if they can’t then, definitely on Wednesday and Thursday.
But I thought Cole Hamels is a Chokey McChoker who does nothing but choke!
Also, if I worked the dates out right, the last game of the Phils/Yanks series is Moyer/Pettitte. Yaaaay for 10,000 old jokes.
sadly, we face the hammer in the series… i pray the yanks at least get 5 hits off of him :p
Hopefully it’s like his game against the Red Sox ;P
And probably endless remarks about how this is the last time the two active leaders in wins have faced each other since whenever that was.
It’s not over yet. They sort of mix and match at the end of games. Lots can happen…
Oh, Lidge is back now…
The Ben-Hur moving commercial has officially become my least favorite commercial in the current commercial rotation. Damn, really thought I could have snuck the word “commercial” in there one more time.
uh oh, we have the 92mph joba today
and now he’s pumpin 94
good to see
Kay, stop feeding the ego of Rodriguez! You’ll just add to his 24+1 mentality.
At this point:
a. Longoria is more deserving than A-Rod. Sorry, Alex.
b. I’d rather just have A-Rod get the rest anyway.
RUSH FANS IN RED PONCHO
good job joba!
Anyone just see the cannon of Jayson Werth? Wow.
strasburg averaged 99mph (when rounded up) on his four seamer today
holy shit
LMAO!!! He was about to start something bad if that wasn’t called.
Like Wally Backman bad?
Hopefully…
dont fucking blow this game, phils
Finally finished it off.
lolz
10 walks for the yanks today
good job
I would’ve preferred Mitre over Joba/Mo
Eh, with a day off tomorrow, I don’t mind.
It’s ‘only’ a 4 run lead, neither one pitched yesterday, and there’s a day off tomorrow. No problem using them here. Finish it off and get out of the rain.
Messy…but a win!
Very nice. Way to get the job done Yanks!!!
SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP! Yes I’ve seen it for a million years but watching opposing players’ reactions to him never gets old. Ever.
great great great sweep by the yanks
FIRST PLACE BABY!!
This is a little late, but during the middle of the game I realized that the Houston coach looked like the bad guy from Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
http://metropolitanlady.files......_doom1.jpg
tied for first wooooo!!!!!
I had the most amazing seats to this game. 20 rows directly behind home plate, elevated by a few feet. It was epic. Got a ws ring replica as well.
I always love that. Kobe and Phil both claim he went into the locker room and got his ankle, “re-taped,” which miraculously healed the ankle, giving him the necessary lift. I just have a hard time believing all they do in the locker room is re tape it.
wow. I was not even close to the right thread on this one, ha.
