Open Thread: Backman Goes Bananas

Thames hits the DL with hamstring issue, Huffman recalled
Moseley & Montero guide SWB to a win

Someone sent that in during yesterday’s chat, but I had to wait until today for an open thread to use it in. The video both is and isn’t safe for work. There’s nothing inappropriate visually, but the audio is rather … colorful. Truly an epic meltdown by Wally Backman.

Anyway … eh screw it. You guys know what to do with these open threads by now, so have at it.

That video was and remains epic.

    Oh. And.

    USA! USA! USA!

And, I really, really, really want the Marlins to win tonight!

    • Andy In Sunny Daytona

Robert Green = Bill Buckner. hahahahahahahahahahahahaha I love it so much. Watching the World Cup with Englishman-who-think-they-have-the-match-in-the-bag-only-to-see-it-literally-slip-through-their-fingers = PRICELESS!!!!

    • poster

      That was a legendary fuck-up.

And Howard is as tough as balls*.

*This is a great compliment. Don’t question it.

    • Andrew518

      Another argument against instant replay…

There will be less opportunities for truly great meltdowns such as this one.

There’s something great about a game that stops so a coach can come out on to the field of play and argue calls that will never be overturned.

      • Spaceman.Spiff

No thanks, I’d rather get the call right in the majors and let the minor league managers provide the entertainment in this kind of way. There’s nothing great about a game that doesn’t get it right.

      • Cult of Basebaal

Yeah, I’m glad we don’t have replay to slow the game down, that would be a travesty …

  • Total Dominication

WIth Posada catching tommorow, does Miranda get called up to replace Moeller and DH? Hoping to see a better lineup when I got he the game tommorrow.

    • Total Dominication

      *go to the

  • Total Dominication

Maybe the ump is racist? The batter really didn’t seem to do anything.

    • Angelo

I felt that way as well. Maybe we’re wrong, but I can’t really put my finger on why the batter got thrown out. Priceless melt down though. That was great.

      • AndrewYF

The batter did say a few words on a strike call.

  • UWS

This video is amazing. Absolutely amazing.

  • Brien Jackson

So my little league team won 2 playoff games today, to make 5 straight wins and get us into the championship game. We played flawless defense (for 8 year olds) and absolutely pounded the bats both games.

Strangely enough, the wife of one of my assistants who chewed me out 2 weeks ago, accused me of being a terrible coach who didn’t know what he was doing and wasn’t “invested” enough, and claimed that the kids on our team were better at the beginning of the year then now because I’m such a horrible no-good coach had nothing to say to me today. Except to argue with me about telling the second baseman to get the 2nd out of an inning at first instead of throwing the ball to 2nd in our first game.

    I fucking hate people.

    • Rebecca-Optimist Prime (Optimovelist Primus)

      People suck.

      • Brien Jackson

Meh, I’ve actually got a really good group of parents, especially for a non-select team. They’ve been really supportive and understanding of what we were doing all season. This one, though, is in a bit of a clique that coaches some of the teams in the league, sits on the board of directors, etc., and just generally doesn’t like me managing the team.

Granted, I might have made it worse by bringing one of the district championship medals I won coaching my younger brothers team to a game and giving it to her as a “present” a couple of games ago, but you can only take so much shit, ya know?

        • josh anthony

Honestly listen to yourself. you sound like a real douche bag.

          • Cult of Basebaal

You should take your own advice.

        • Neil

Just remind yourself of how much your helping the kids and that unlike your asst coach you don’t have to live with the bitch!

        • Pat D

I’d love to coach kids playing youth baseball. However, there are several reasons I can’t. First of all, I’m so out of shape now that I’d probably embarass myself and not actually be much help. Also my work schedule is not conducive at all, in that I can never get a morning shift and don’t really want one.

But I would NEVER be able to tolerate the parents of the kids I would coach. I know this from my own memories of when I played. My team and all of the other teams I played in 8 years were loaded with parents who thought the goal of the game was to win. Winning’s nice, of course, but that’s not the point of playing baseball as a kid. The point is to learn fundamentals and have fun playing the game. You just can’t tell that to a lot of parents who just love to live through their children’s minor accomplishments, though.

So I feel your pain. Tell that woman to fuck off. After the season.

    • Angelo

      Damn. Tough days I see.

    • NYTraveller

Everyone who’s ever coached youth sports probably can relate to that.

I’ve coached girls basketball, HS and college for 20 years. Once, after 3 straight top 5 finishes in the stat we were having a bit of a rough spot and had to come back from down 10 in the 4th quarter against a big rival to get in the playoffs. I played one of my better players a little less than usual and her Dad came out of the stands, stood on the sidelines opposite the bench, shook his fist and cursed me out until the ref told him to calm down. After we won, I was standing at half court talking to the other coach (an old friend) and he asked me who the lunatic was, so I said, “That’s Janie’s Dad, Mr. Smith” and he commiserated with me for a few moments. At that point a parent came up, shook my hand, thanked me for doing a great jo and particularly for helping her daughter so much that season. When she walked away my friend asked who she was. Says I, “That’s Mrs. Smith” and we both had a good laugh.

Don’t worry about the adults, just think about the kids, how much they learn and the fun they have – the rest of it’s bs anyway.

      • Brien Jackson

I guess it shouldn’t bother me, I just can’t figure out what her problem is. Her kid is the best one on the team, leads off, plays first, almost never sits, etc. Makes it seem like it’s personal, I guess.

  • EvoLuTioN aka Jobamania

i read this as “Brackman goes bananas” and i immediately went to look for DOTF =/

Haha, I thought Axisa made a typo for a second as well haha.

Fucking win by the PA people.

    • Angelo

      Just noticed that haha.

  • Cecala

The best part of the video was “Lets get a beer Doc” then goes into complete utter meltdown mode but cools down enough to warn the catcher to get out of the way.

If only Joe Girardi would have a meltdown one day, but I will keep dreaming…=(

  • Total Dominication

Heh, Pasmear didn’t pitch in the save situation yesterday, but pitched in the 8-run lead game today.

Too bad the @IAmCentaur account on Twitter ended because it’s identity was revealed (BTW, It was Bob Klap, who, using Tweet Deck, accidentally tweeted with both accounts). He wasn’t as enjoyable as @OldHossRadbourn but there was some good stuff every now and then.

    • Dela G

      oldrosshadburn is effing hilarious

      • bexarama

Completely. @IAmCentaur was pretty funny for a while, but got old. Also, LOL @ Bob Klap blowing up his own spot. Fail.

  • wilcymoore27

I watched the video/listened to the audio … So can someone please tell me who in hell got the bright idea to voice-mike Wally Backman? And why in the world do people like him allow themselves to be miked?

    Freakin’ dumb!
