Open Thread: Happy Birthday, Phil
ByWell look at that. The Yankees’ blossoming ace turns the ripe old age of 24 today. Hard to believe he’s still that young, no? Here’s a partial list of big league starters older than Mr. Hughes…
Clay Buchholz (22 months older)
Yovani Gallardo (four months)
Josh Johnson (16 months)
Ian Kennedy (14 months)
Tim Lincecum (24 months)
Mike Pelfrey (30 months)
David Price (11 months)
Also older than Phil Hughes? Andrew Brackman, who is six months his elder. Pretty crazy, huh?
Anyway, here is your off day open thread. The Mets and Tigers are playing on both SNY and MLB Network, and you’ve also got Oklahoma and South Carolina in College World Series action (loser is eliminated) on ESPN2. Apparently the NBA draft is on somewhere as well, if that’s your thing. Talk about whatever you want, just don’t be a jerk.

Pulling for OU tonight. My Big XII is losing teams left and right.
Fun Fact: the Big XII currently has 10 members, and the Big 10 currently has 12 members.
Fun Fact: On 6/10/2010, the Big 12, Big 10 and Pac-10 all had eleven members.

and the Pac-10 has 11 Members
Also older than Phil Hughes:
Jamie Moyer
Let’s not forget Angel Berroa.
Also older than Phil Hughes:
Pete Abraham’s jokes about Angel Berroa
Still younger than Phil, and hopefully staying healthy:
Dealin’ Dellin Betances
If you had said one of Jamie Moyer’s kids, I wouldn’t have been surprised.
Phil Hughes: You ain’t my daddy! Is you?

Happy birthday Phil! Here is a pretty awesome article about Mr. Hughes (& Mr. Pettitte):
http://www.usatoday.com/sports.....very_N.htm
It’s kinda cool that Lincecum and Hughes share the same birthday. Oh by the way, another pitcher older than Hughes: Matt Cain.
Lincecum’s birthday is the same as Andy’s, not Phil’s.
It’s kinda weird that I know this off the top of my head.
(peruses the text of the New York State stalking statute)
New York State stalking statute
Just another thing Bexy knows off the top of her head.
I suppose I deserved that :/
all this talk about the tops of peoples’ heads…oh never mind.
Happy birthday, St Phil!
God I feel so old.
How much older is Joba than Hughes?
http://www.google.com
http://bit.ly/ak7c34 (SAFE)
that. is awesome.
About 9 months I think.
Are you saying that Joba is his daddy?
Just 21 minutes til the NBA Draft…YAY!!!!
But the mind boggling thing is that King Felix is younger than Hughes. Damn.
Two months older. Felix was born April 1986, Hughes was born June 1986.
pat FAIL
err…JobaWockeeZ. Damn, I fail.
Don’t beat yourself up, it’s a force of habit.
Muscle memory and shit.
Hot the showers.
HAh, I fail too. Let’s just delete this thread.
pat says:
Hot the showers.
You sick fucko.
Jimmy: Did you just say mind-bottling?
Chazz: Yeah, mind-bottling. You know, when things are so crazy it gets your thoughts all trapped, like in a bottle?
If we went to a Halloween party dressed as Batman and Robin, I’d go as Robin. That’s how much you mean to me.
ALSO: Felix Hernandez: (two months) 0_0
Another big league starter older than Hughes:
Joba Chamberlain
/notlettingthedreamdie’d
South Carolina’s catcher just took a foul tip right to the junk. Ugh.
“Also older than Phil Hughes? Andrew Brackman, who is six months his elder. Pretty crazy, huh?”
I noticed that a couple of weeks ago… blew my mind.
Some more
Felix Hernandez (2 months)
Wade Davis (9 months)
Joba Chamberlain (9 months)
Jake Arrieta (3 months)
Matt Harrison (10 months)
Max Scherzer (23 months)
Jair Jurrjens (5 months)
Johnny Cueto (4 months)
Homer Bailey (1 month)
John Ely (1 month)
Jason Hirsh (4 years)
Who?
look on the scranton roster… and google who he is
I know
He’s the guy sitting on the couch next to you.
http://newyork.craigslist.org/.....57413.html
He said stahtin pitchahs, not relievas. We all know dat Jobber has dah Bulldog mentality.
Lets try that again
Joba Chamberlain (9 months)
He said stahtin pitchahs, not relievas. We all know dat Jobber has dah Bulldog mentality.
is Daniel Nava the 2010 version of Nick Green or is he a legit player?
He’s not the 2010 version of Nick Green, he’s more like the 2010 version of Jonathan Van Every.
I’d say Dernell McDonald is 2010 Nick Green, as he’s come down back to Earth. Nava has pretty good minor league numbers, at least.
Nava is also 27.
damn that’s old as hell
I know. But still, those MiLB numbers are good. I’m not saying Nava is legit but McDonald is more like Nick Green than Nava is, unless we’re talking about grit, as then the darker McDonald is nowhere close to Green or Nava.
Yeah I recognize the fact he put up good numbers, but, he was 27 in AAA. That’s Shelley Duncan-like
It’s Jorge Vazquez like, even.
/coldvoiceofreason’d
I realize that but Shelley never really displayed similar skills, at least not similar contact skills. Again, not saying he’s legit but he’s probably better than Shelley.
I don’t know much about him, so I cannot say he is better or worse than Shelley. All I was doing was making an observation that he was 27 in AAA and generally much older than any of his peers and his stats should be then be taken with a grain of salt. Therefore I compared him to a player who also had the same predicament, Shelley.
Sooo what you’re saying is he’s a rich man’s Shelley Duncan? That’s interesting because the Red Sox are a small market team…
27 in AAA, 25 in A+ certainly made him one of the oldest players at those levels. And I know that his age definitely dwarfs his stats a bit. However, he certainly seemed to have the ability to hit for average, had the plate discipline, and decent power. I doubt that those skills will translate to the Majors, given his age, but he could probably a serviceable bench piece.
I am not sure if he’ll be better than Shelley but if he’s a serviceable bench piece, that’s more than what Shelley is.
if he’s a serviceable bench piece, that’s more than what Shelley is.
HOW. DARE. YOU. SAY THAT ABOUT SHELLEY. He would run into a wall for you in a 14-3 game!!!!!
He’ll also say horribly offensive things are very inopportune times thus leading to uber-awkward silence.
I’d put Nava in a class with Utley, Berkman, Youk and Helton.
For Diamond Cutters…..
Still can’t believe he did that.
Reference? I prefer to spend my time with less damaging things than Peter Gammons’ columns, like asbestos suppositories.
Ahaha.
http://riveraveblues.com/off-t.....ent-937439
Hahaha well played
How dare you put Utley, Berkman, and Helton in the same class as Youk!!!
One last thing about Torre that I think many Yankee fans can agree on.
My feelings towards him are extremely conflicted.
i’m just glad he’s not out there ruining the yankees’ bullpen anymore. i guarantee you they would all be burned out by now, etc. I always felt sorry for all those relievers he burned out. i’m sure my man tsjc could provide a nice list
I always felt sorry for all those relievers he burned out.
Paul Quantrill can’t even masturbate anymore.
hahahahaha holy shit i just laughed out loud
he had to start using his left arm, but it just wasn’t the same…
Shit, he made Scott Proctor an alcoholic.
Yeah, but he gave Tanyon Sturtze a career. Then promptly ruined it.
http://cache.daylife.com/image.....7/340x.jpg
Scott Proctor’s 2006 numbers = EEEEESH
I counted six times he went out again the night after throwing 25+
hey i just read a tweet that said brackman has been promoted to trenton!
http://twitter.com/jnorris427
Awesome news! I definitely gotta get myself there this week.
The Wizards home arena is located right next to Chinatown in downtown DC.
The Great Wall of Chinatown?
I saw Olney link to an article about how great a job Phil Coke was doing for the Tigers. Upon checking B-R, I realized he had the exact same peripherals as he did last year, except for one category – HR/FB.
In 2010, he’s walking slightly more, striking out slightly fewer, and allowing way fewer HR’s.
h/9, hr/9, bb/9, k/9, so/bb
2009: 6.6 1.5 3.0 7.4 2.45
2010: 8.3 0.3 3.4 6.8 2.00
The HR’s that he’s not giving up are probably turning into the extra hits he’s yielding. He has a 3.09 ERA, no thanks partly due to playing his home games in Comerica.
He’s only given up 1 HR all year – and that was at home.I assume he’s due for a partial correction. He’ll probably get worse on the road.
Being in a weaker offensive division, with some spacious ballparks will certainly increase his effectiveness. The White Sox are the only team with a real launching pad in the division, but they’re best hitters are right handed (Rios, Quentin and Konerko). The Twins are the only difficult lineup in the division, and Target Field seems to be surpressing HR’s.
Phil Hughes is younger than me and a millionaire.
I am a complete and utter failure.
You should have been selling crack. That’s where the money is.
You’re a woman, which means you’re significantly less likely to become a millionaire through your ability to throw a baseball than Phil Hughes is.
Not that that means that you’re not a failure.
/if it makes you feel any better, I’m also older than Hughes, not a millionaire, and I’m skeptical that I could hit 80 on the radar gun if you held a gun to my head.
My fastball is 23 mph.
I swear to god I’m not exaggerating.
I honestly didn’t know it was possible to throw that slow.
How is that even possible? What angle do you have to throw that at to make it to home plate?
You quite literally could not reach the plate from the mound at that velocity.
See here
El Duque FTW.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t that pitch hit like a mile? Or was that someone else
That was A-Rod in ’02. http://scores.espn.go.com/mlb/.....=220826110
Maybe someone else did but that’s the one I most clearly remember.
http://tinyurl.com/29qn3pk
Wasn’t the eephus, but Gonzalez did hit one out later off El Duque.
Is that the speed when it leaves your hand? Or when it reaches the plate? I’m told pitches slow down as the near the plate.
:: head explodes ::
Sincerely,
Tim McCarver
I’m much, much, younger than Phil Hughes, but I too am not a millionaire.
taps rebecca’s overflowing mug of lukewarm beer with his own, hiccups, burps, hiccups again (that time it hurt a little but I don’t think anything’s wrong) and starts leading the whole bar in a beautifully drunken rendition of Billy Joel’s “Piano Man”
I will say this, Kwame Brown might of been a bum or at least not that good of a player, however, Collins (and Jordan) really screwed his development while he was with the Wizards.
dont feel sorry for kwame, he’s made 50 million for his career
the best thing about jay bilas is his propensity to talk about wingspans…
haha there he goes talkin bout wingspans
i bet he would think i’m a freak since i am 6’2 and have a 6’9 wingspan. good thing i gave up basketball my senior year in HS…
I wonder how many times my name will be mentioned tonight.
74?
Evan Turner: Can he be another Paul Pierce?
call me skeptical, but i see him becoming a bust. maybe it’s just me
Who Wall?
oh i was talking about turner. wall will be a superstar
Hughes? In Mo’s name why?
He’s talking the foreign language of basketball, not about Hughes.
heh. other sports.
ha turner sounds like a robot
Nets take Favors. Analysis? how’d we get screwed this time?
I actually like it. He’s a much better pick than Johnson.
Cousins would have been better, but Favors is no slouch.
Well at least they didn’t pick Wes Johnson lol.
I like Favors alot. Personally I would of picked Cousins, but the differences are minimal…
Solid pick by minnesota.
Meh.
I like Wes more than you do. Im not saying he’s going to be a star but he’s better than Brewer, and he has the potential to be a good player. Guy has terrific athleticism and can rebound. A healthy Jefferson, with Rubio, that team has potential.
If you have to say “He’s gonna be better than Corey Brewer” to justify the guy you just took with the 4th pick of the draft, something has gone horribly wrong.
Their frontcourt is pretty full. And personally I don’t like the pairing of Cousins with Jefferson and Love and in that franchise period. Could they of drafted down to get Wes sure, but I really don’t have problem with the pick. Plus, after Cousins, the draft really goes down after that…
And personally I don’t like the pairing of Cousins with Jefferson and Love and in that franchise period.
Neither do I, which is why the Wolves should look to trade Jefferson and Love, which they already are.
Cousins >>>>>>>>>>> Jefferson > Love
That might work. Jefferson (before the knee injury) was damn good but who knows if AJ would ever recover from that injury and which team would take chance on him and if I was running an NBA franchise, im not taking Love.
i hope my rockets are able to trade up and get some sort of big impact big man. Work those phones, Darryl Morey
I’m gonna laugh when the Rockets end up with Cole Aldrich.
i will chop cats
very good pick by the kings
Not Good, Great pick.
true dat
Cousins and Evans pairing up=Potential nightmare for the Western conference…
dalembert, landry, and cousins will be a nightmare for the lakers
they wont get a shot off inside the lane
I’ll give you sam and Cousins, im not giving you Landry. Personally, I think Landry kinda sucks and Gasol will eat him for breakfast, lunch, dinner and an occasional midnight snack.
Overall, that is very big and long frontline though.
” Gasol will eat him for breakfast, lunch, dinner and an occasional midnight snack.
”
The triangle has dissected many front courts in its day.
The Spaniards prefer tapas.
” I think Landry kinda sucks and Gasol will eat him for breakfast, lunch, dinner and an occasional midnight snack.”
have you actually watched landry?? Prior to being traded by the rockets, he was actually on his way to becoming the 6th man of the year, and is a big time force down low. he can dunk on pretty much anyone, can shoot the ball and defends pretty well. he had no problem scoring against bigs in the rocket’s division and did the same when he went over to the pacific. He averaged 16 against the lakers this season. the guy is very underrated
He’s a undersize PF who can’t defend. And personally I thought he was playing a little bit over his head. Look im not a Landry fan. Is he a solid back up sure, but Im not in love with him.
Armando Gallaraga with the no-no into the third.
/justsaying’d
the warriors chose the african version of anthony randolph??
idiots

Is a really great party going to show LeBron that the Knicks would like his services? I can’t wait until the inevitable tampering controversy that will get leaked in a few years. There’s no way there hasn’t been any behind the scenes discussions with LeBron’s people. The same can probably be said of the other big names.
And happy birthday to me!
Understand the pick by Dumars here, however, im not a huge Monroe fan.
In answer to the above, I actually threw it as fast as 30 MPH before blowing my arm(s) out last summer in an attempt to actually learn pitching mechanics.
No, I can’t reach the plate. I can’t even reach the fast pitch target on flat ground. (Actually, I throw the ball OVER it. Ask the dudes at the Cyclones.)
My swing’s not much better, but if I adopt a Cervelli-esque stance, I can at least semi-make contact.
You are a pinnacle of unathleticism.
The only thing I can do semi-well is kayak. Or Devil sticks, which aren’t actually athletic at all.
Do you like to play golf? I do.
Boy after Wall, Cousins, Favors, and Turner, this draft really takes a turn for the worse.
Ok what’s the deal with RA Dickey? How is he capable of pitching so successfully if he was born without a UCL?
Neal is doing pretty damn good. Nice to see a long time fellow Yankee (name of the select team of which I was a longtime teammate of his) do well.
Also, Laird for DH?
/sarcastic
That picture is so cool.
I was watching MLB tonight and I saw that Verducci said the Royals are looking to move Alex Gordon. I think he’s a great fit for the Yankees, he can play the outfield in a pinch and he can play third and provide better offense than Ramiro Pena when Alex needs a day off. I’d love to pull a trade for Gordon/DeJesus at the dead line, but somehow I feel that’s an unrealistic scenario.
I’d be all over that. Mind, I’m awful at player evaluating.
Hmmm, well maybe I should reconsider
The Yanks need someone who crucshes Lefties and can play the OF.
http://www.baseball-reference......;t=b#plato
Gordon’s not a fit.
Isn’t that what Marcus Thames is for?
Marcus Thames can play the OF?
Meh, if you find someone better defensively, chances are he won’t be as productive offensively. I think almost any more for a righty hitting outfielder at this point will be a lateral move, and won’t justify the extra salary.
Right, and that’s why I think the Yanks will wind up going with internal options for both the OF and bullpen help this July 31st. I’ve yet to see anyone who’s a fit and/or is worth paying for.
http://www.dreamstime.com/marc.....538321.jpg
Yes, he can only fake the OF but when he comes back, it’s better than what they have and I think Gordon wouldn’t be an awful addition.
He can play third base when Alex needs a day off (which seems like those will be plentiful) and hit better than Ramiro Pena while doing it and maybe even the OF in a pinch. He’d basically take Kevin Russo’s role and not suck at it, IMO. If they pulled this off they’d basically be replacing Russo and Huffman with DeJesus and Gordon. I also like the idea of Adam LaRoche too, but that’s mainly using him as the fulltime DH.
I think the only thing that gets Pena off the roster is the addition of someone who can play SS better than Jeter. That’s not Gordon./
Pena I would like to keep, he’s a good pinch runner/defensive replacement. It’s Russo and Huffman I’d like to find replacements for.
http://riveraveblues.com/2010/.....ent-936373
Yeah… fourth inning.
baha. you responded to that at 3AM. That’s dedication. You’re a warrior, bexy.
I could not sleep last night, could you blame me? And after the game I was reading the Game Thread in sort of abject horror (not that I wasn’t guilty of some really bad comments too).
But yes. Dedication. =P
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIQ5BEZaZKI
Hilarious. Say what you will about Artest, but the man is entertaining.
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/.....-deal.html
I can’t believe Bobby V is going to work for Loria. There’s some talent there, and he’ll get that team to play well for him. But Loria is just nuts, I’m surprised Bobby is that desperate to get back in the game.
and the Rockies have bases loaded no one out on a single and a pair of walks from Dice-BB. That was a great $100M investment
I remember being devastated when Boston got him.
Yeah…
Ooh, Varitek is catching too
teh game calling!!
I think I could have crushed the pitch he just threw, blah. Rocky dude fouled it off. ;_;
37 pitch first inning, three walks, two bases leaded no out situations…2 runs. Come on Colorado, you are better than that
In 2008 it would have been no runs so I’m mildly okay with it, I guess
I was very devastated, my roommate was a sox fan and he was rubbing my nose in it and going on and on about the gyroball.
Mentioned in another thread players you hate…I figured I’d suggest my all time “I hate these guys team”
Guys who have never played for the Yankees, non Red Sox player in parenthesis:

1B: Kevin Youkilis (Justin Morneau)

SP: Dan Haren
SP: Cliff Lee
CL: Carlos Marmol
RP: Jonathan Broxton
RP: Manny Corpas
RP: Chad Qualls (he’ll get out of this funk)
Here’s to hoping I can take Cliff Lee off of my favorite “never played for the Yanks” list next year. Yeah, I know it’s kinda lame, but I’m bored so what the fuck.
Haha I like this. A fellow Buehrle fan, yay!!!! And I think I hate Beltre more than Glaus now. And Carlos Pena was kind of a Yankee…
I also really like Roy Halladay. When he’s not pitching against the Yankees. :X
Roy Halladay is a spineless coward who is paid off by the Red Sox to give his best starts against the Yankees and his worst against Boston.
Roy HalladayJohn LackeyThe Red Sox are paying 85M for this year and the next four years…that I don’t mind.
Andy Phillips? Why Andy Phillips ?
As a female Yankee fan, let me tell you: there are no female Yankee fans that dislike Andy Phillips. Whooo, boy.
(For the record, I am indifferent about Andy Phillips.)
to clarify: there were a lot of female fans I know that liked him more/wanted him to get more playing time than Eyechart just because they thought he was hot. And no, I was not one of them.
Don’t lie to us. His name is Andy after all.
>:(
There were also a lot of people who thought Melky was hot, what the hell.
His entire game was based around the basehit…I felt that Doug Mientkiewicz was the better player, a lot of fans fell in love with him…I just wanted him gone.
I imagine the “most hated Yankees” list is a list of people who pissed you off while on the Yankees. Mike Lowell doesn’t really fit the bill there, he had all of 15 PAs for the Yankees. And how is LaTroy Hawkins not there?
Mike Lowell doesn’t really fit the bill there
I couldn’t put him on the Non Yankee list and he had to be there somewhere. One of my favorite NoMaas shops was the one he’s just wearing a plain white shirt and someone shopped “cupchicks” on it. LaTroy Hawkins, yeah he should be there…the Paul O’Niell shit made me feel sorry for him though.
Captain, you just gave me a post for tomorrow. Thank you very much.
I want a share of the ad revenue, and a writing credit.
How about just credit?
Zack Greinke should be there too…my heart goes out to people with mental disorders, I probably like him more than I liked Radke.
Most Hated, non-sox division:
C: Pierzynski (or however the fuck you spell it)
1B: Glaus (shut up troy glaus. and get a real fucking first name)
2B: Polanco (I know he’s a 3B right now but I hate him sosososososo much)
3B: Casey Blake (shave the beard or start fighting bears, one or the other)
SS: Eckstein (if you can still call him a SS)
LF: Jose Bautista (stop pretending to be good, mmk?)
CF: Aaron Rowand (not sure if he still centerfields, but fuck aaron rowand)
RF: Austin Kearns (just like…I dunno…so frickin average)
DH: Jose Guillen (no idea why I hate him so much)
Favorite Non-Yankees:
C: Mauer
1B: Pujols
2B: Utley (I do hate the hair, but he’s just so friggin good)
3B: Longoria (Zimmerman is juuuuust behind him)
SS: Hanley
LF: Crawford
CF: Franklin Gutierez
RF: Justin Upton
DH: Adam Dunn
Most Hated Rotation:
Josh Beckett
Jamie Moyer
Derek Lowe
Carlos Silva
Livan Hernandez
Favorit non-Yankee Rotation:
Felix
Halladay
Lincecum
Price
Ubaldo
What’s with all the Pierzynski hate?
He’s a douche?
My most hated player is Carl Everett, the other positions don’t even matter.
My poor Moosey
I don’t think the Mets or Rangers will ever lose a game again. Especially not Texas, their upcoming schedule is the School of the Blind.
Phil Coke against David Wright with the bases loaded, one out, and the Mets down by 1, by the way…
::looks at Texas’ schedule::
Yeesh. They just finished with Houston and Pittsburgh, then they play Houston again, @LAA (they might lose one of those), then the White Sox, Indians, and Orioles. Egads
and strikeout #84 for Wright
Coke gets out of it… whahuh. o_O Even though it worked out, it was goddamn insanity to let Coke pitch to Wright. I also spotted five points up to the sky.
was it?
Coke vs. RHB: .250/.338/.286/.624, 8BB, 6K, 0HR
Coke vs. LHB: .245/.310/.321/.631, 3BB, 16K, 1HR
Wright career vs. LHP: .354/.443/.616
Wright 2010 vs. LHP: 73 PA, .417/.493/.850
I’m gonna go with “yeah it was”
touche.
well, YCPB
I doubt any of you are hardcore enough to appreciate this, but for my fellow Metal heads:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....r_embedded
Pretty awesome stuff
\m/
What the hell happened to Igarashi? I remember him having decent numbers
Never mind, this happened
and the Rockies take the lead again
Dice-K is up to his old tricks.
5ip, 5 hits, 4 walks, 6 ks, only 2 ER
Nice work on averaging almost 2 baserunners an inning.
Sox are re-rallying.
Fuck, come on Rockies!
Oh, Manny Corpas pitching for the sixth time in eight days. That kind of explains a lot. Game’s not over, though, it’s Coors…
Come on Jason!!!!
Good job.
Who knew ? that now makes it two!!
Like I said, game’s not over as Papelbon blows it for the second night in a row.
Thank
GodMo for Mariano Rivera.wtf, Pedroia 5-5? God damn it.
Bettah than Cano!
3 home runs and a double? wtf…
