Aceves suffers another setback, Sanchez shifted to bullpen

By

Via Bryan Hoch, sorely missed reliever Al Aceves had a setback while throwing his bullpen session in Tampa today. He’s heading back to New York for even more tests. The epidurals are obviously not doing the trick, so it’s looking more and more likely that Ace will need to have surgery to fix that bulging disc in his back. Shame, getting him back and healthy was the best bullpen help the Yankees could have hoped for in the second half.

In what I am sure is completely related news, Romulo Sanchez was scratched from his start for Triple-A Scranton tonight, and has been moved to the bullpen to prepare him for his future as a big league reliever. Jason Hirsh takes his spot in SWB’s rotation. If it’s just a coincidence that the Romulo news broke right after the Aceves news, then that’s one hell of a coincidence.

Hard to come back from a herniated disk. No harm in trying, however. If he has surgery now he could probably be ready to pitch again by ST next year, correct?

I think it’s time to try out Nova or Hirsh in the Aceves role.

      No way with Nova.

I dont think Nova’s stuff would translate to being an effective reliever, and besides, you’d want to have Nova keep a starter’s stamina & mentality for that inevitable Sept call-up. Romulo Sanchez has got the plus FB and the arm is healthy. Not sure if Sanchez can emerge as a ‘pen performer in the 2nd half, but its absolutely worth a shot.

Still waiting on Albaladejo’s return though. What’s up with that?

    • Oh yeah, he’ll have plenty of time if he gets the surgery now. You may remember Randy Johnson had the surgery for a herniated disc (Ace is a bulging disc, not as serious) after he was traded around November 07 and only missed the first few weeks of the season. I think the Yanks were trying to take the same tact with Ace, but it doesn’t appear to be working.

BTW-That’s why I never got on Randy for how mediocre he was here. He went out there an pitched with injuries that would have sidelined most players. Maybe that’s why he was so grumpy, too.

    “Your epidurals are showing”

But seriously, this sucks. Ace is the man and the Yanks could really use his services.

    I don’t believe in coincidences.

I think during/after the all star break weekend, we will see some changes to the pen. Hopefully Alby gets a shot and I wouldn’t mind Nova getting a real shot as well.

The bullpen is nothing without Ace

“”"You may remember Randy Johnson had the surgery for a herniated disc (Ace is a bulging disc, not as serious)”"”

No maybe not but the pain can be as bad or worse. Bottom line: Both are serious, especially when they’re keepin ya from bringin home your paycheck to support your family. I mean pain is pain.

    • Baseballnation says:

He brings the paycheck home regardless, his contract is money in the bank.

    • I’ve had both, and one is nowhere near as serious as the other. It’s possible Randy’s was in a location that was less of an issue, but a herniated disc means you lose the “cushion” between the discs in your spine. “Bulging disc” means you have a slipped disc in your back, but the cushion is intact.
