Game 103: Fat Elvis is in the building

It sure was a busy trade deadline for the Yankees, with the biggest pick up being the man you see above. Lance Berkman steps right in as the Yanks’ new designated hitter, and his impact is immediately noticeable. He’s batting second in tonight’s lineup, pushing both Curtis Granderson and Nick Swisher down towards the bottom third of the order. On days Jorge Posada catches, you’re looking at a lineup that could hurt you one through nine with zero breaks for opposing pitchers. Heck, Derek Jeter is the team’s worst offensive regular right now.

In other news, the Yanks are playing a pretty big game tonight. They dropped the opener last night on one bad Phil Hughes pitch, but lost among the bad pitch and the trade deadline was that the Yankees had just one hit after the 1st inning. That simply can not happen again, and I’m sure Fat Elvis will do a long way towards making sure it doesn’t. A win restores the Yanks’ two game lead in the division, a loss puts them in a tie with Tampa.

Here’s tonight’s starting nine…

Jeter, SS
Berkman, DH
Teixeira, 1B
A-Rod, 3B
Cano, 2B
Swisher, RF
Granderson, CF
Cervelli, C
Gardner, LF

And on the mound, it’s Javy “score me some damn runs” Vazquez.

First pitch is scheduled for a little after 7pm ET, and can be seen locally on YES and nationally on MLB Network. Enjoy the game, folks.

  1. Lance looks good in pinstripes. They’re, you know, slimming.

  2. forensicnucchem says:

A-Rod gets #600 in the 3rd inning tonight with one on and one out to make it a 4-0 game.

Hey, if you’re going to make out there predictions, go big or go home…

    • Pete says:

Like HR #300, HR #600 will be hit at Tropicana field. Unlike #s 300 and 400, it will not be to opposite field. Unlike #500, it will not be down the line. #600 will be a MASSIVE shot to straightaway left reminiscent of his 53rd HR (a GS) of 2007, which hit a catwalk over the seats in left field.

  3. Slappy White says:

cant we go with Puma over Fat Elvis

  4. Carlosologist says:

We’re obviously going to be no-hit because Javy is on the mound and we can’t score runs for him and the pitcher tonight just threw a no-hitter.

  5. Slappy White says:

Over/under on the use of Deep and Thick on tonights thread ?

  6. JobaWockeeZ says:

Brian Cashman: Great GM trader, or best GM trader?

  7. j_Yankees says:

damnit…we have fat elvis now and still cervelli finds a way to get in the lineup. Damn you posada and you’re old body.

oh..and i’m not really sure how the yankees will find a way to win games with Thames still here and Curtis in AAA. ::rolls eyes::

  8. Brooklyn Ed says:

anyone want to guess what # Wood would be getting? obviously #34 and 43 is taken. I would say he would choose #39.

  9. forensicnucchem says:

For the number junkies among us, Lance Berkman will don 17, and Austin Kearns will carry 26 on his back. I guess John Flaherty and El Duque won’t live to see their pinstriped numbers retired.

Late addition from the prior post, I wonder if they’ll beat that into the ground like they do with O’Neill and 21…

  10. JobaWockeeZ says:

I’ll take Jeter over Cervelli. Sure Cervelli isn’t really a regular but damn he sure is playing a lot. Too much for my tastes.

  11. do I want to know how this deep and thick thing started?

  12. Carlosologist says:

Raise your hand if you forgot Tino Martinez worked for YES.

    (raises hand)

  13. Slappy White says:

I want beleive that we’re really deeper and thicker until I hear Suzyn Waldman say so

  14. JobaWockeeZ says:

Jeter grounding out on the first pitch? Probably the most predictable thing in baseball.

  15. Ross in Jersey says:

    New lineup… same old Jeter.

  16. Kevin in Delectable Princeton says:

That one was almost a hit. Keep swinging at the first pitch!

  17. forensicnucchem says:

Wow, that’s a very shiny helmet.

  18. If he doesn’t hit a homer here, he’s a bust and we should have gotten Dunn.

  19. Mike Axisa says:

I’m starting to hate Derek Jeter.

  20. Total Dominication says:

Why is our worst regular batting 1st?

/not sure whether to be happy or depressed by this

  21. Brooklyn Ed says:

seriously…berkman does look weird with the gray uni

  22. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    Damn Jeter…

    Go Berkman!

  24. bexarama says:

A flyout?! Why didn’t we get Dunn!!!!

  25. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

At least he had a 6 pitch AB, something we haven’t seen Jeter do in what seems like forever.

  26. bonestock94 says:

  27. xnyles says:

    DAMN the shift

  28. Total Dominication says:

    Fucking Longoria.

  29. JobaWockeeZ says:

Jeter’s 66% GB rate has to regress at some point right?

  30. I’m sorry, it’s literally impossible to make me want to buy any of your product with those ridiculous commercials, Izod.

  31. Ross in Jersey says:

I wish we had a leadoff hitter like that.

  32. Slappy White says:

    /2009 Swish’d

  33. xnyles says:

    AHHH the most annoying play

  34. Carlosologist says:

I wish we had a Carl Crawford-type leading off.

    Oh wait…

  35. Hummingbird S. says:

    damn, not a good start.

  36. Pat D says:

I think they should have maybe been expecting that…

  37. Slappy White says:

  38. Ross in Jersey says:

And this is when the Rays look about a hundred times better than the Yankees.

  39. nathan says:

Watching the Sox-Tigers game on Fox.

Announcer: Ken Rosenthal the Dodgers were very active during the deadline

Ken: Thats right, very active (D)dick.

  40. I’m actually not even mad. Javy getting Longo to *only* sac fly has to be considered a win.

  41. JobaWockeeZ says:

Even with the correctly guessed pitch out.

  42. Slappy White says:

Gardy, pay attention, you are fast too

  43. bexarama says:

Oh I forgot the whole #600 thing. Oy.

  44. JobaWockeeZ says:

A-Rod probably has the biggest strikezone. That’s so god damn annoying that the bais against him can actually be sued against him in game. Where are my robots?

  45. smurfy says:

Kay and Flaherty were talking about Matt Joyce’s homer last night, correcting themselves for having held it as a mistake by Phil. Eiland said it was a great pitch, give the credit to Joyce.

I had noticed by scanning the papers over the last couple weeks that Matt had won several games with clutch hits. He seems to have the “it” factor, and I am glad he didn’t get replaced by Dunn.

  46. Slappy White says:

WTF are they booing ? fuckin redneck cowbell ringers

  47. Kevin in Delectable Princeton says:

    A-Rod worked a good at-bat there.

  48. xnyles says:

  49. Slappy White says:

  50. Kit says:

    Yeah, Robbie.

  51. forensicnucchem says:

Yeah Cano. Let’s go now boys!!!

  52. Zack says:

Whenever i see Phil Coke, i’m thankful the Yankees have a facial hair policy. Could not see that mess every day

  53. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    Cano set this up perfectly.

    Swish at the dish!

  54. Carlosologist says:

Phew, I don’t owe forensicnucchem a hot tub full of blonde, bodacious women.

  55. rbizzler says:

Yikes, Coke with the IBB to Youk to bring up Papi w/ the bases loaded and the Sox down 2.

  56. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    Swing the bat fool

  57. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Yeah can’t complain.

  58. xnyles says:

    Wow that curve was viscous

  59. BigBlueAL says:

We are now gonna hear from YES about how Swisher cant bat 6th for the rest of the season.

  60. Total Dominication says:

Striking out after getting to 3-0 is very frustrating.

  61. JobaWockeeZ says:

    That was out Maddon.

  62. Mike From South Beach says:

Wow, Papi with the bases clearing double in the bottom of the ninth off of Coke.

  63. Mike Axisa says:

    There you go, Grizzle.

  64. JobaWockeeZ says:

We’ll counter with our own sac fly.

  65. xnyles says:

    Yea good at-bat

  66. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

    Javy Happy

  67. Total Dominication says:

“If Granderson doesn’t start hitting…” Where’ve you been fool?

  68. BigBlueAL says:

Austin Jackson is gonna play LF vs LHP for the Yankees according to Kay.

  69. Carlosologist says:

Kay FAIL. Just called Granderson Austin Jackson. Are they all the same to him?

  70. Kevin in Delectable Princeton says:

Jim Leyland is a terrible manager. He put in his best reliever yesterday in a none-save situation in the 8th and left him in for 59 pitches. Today he was forced to go to Phil Coke who promptly lost the game. Pretty predictable.

  71. j_Yankees says:

of course Cervelli hit the ball hard and it was caught. payback for those 45 hoppers thru the holes.

  72. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

I can’t wait to see a lineup that has Posada catching, Berkman DHing, and more importantly Cervelli on the bench. I love Cervelli, but geez.

  73. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Gotta go with Astros.

    • Pat D says:

      I think I’d say Royals.

Then again, I think Wallace will hit and he alone is probably worth more than any of the Royals’ pickups.

  74. Slappy White says:

why are the red sox not one of the trivia choices ? They picked up a soon to be third string catcher

  75. JobaWockeeZ says:

Wow, Kay learned to read fly balls.

  76. Oooooh, that’s a really good Toyota Text Poll.

“Of the Sellers at the trade deadline, who did the best?”
    D-Backs, Royals, Indians, Astros

… can I go off the board and pick either the Nats or the Pirates? Getting Lambo/McDonald for Dotel and getting Ramos/Tatusko/Roark for Capps and Guzman, those are dynamite pickups.

  77. rek4gehrig says:

    I like this Javy

  78. Slappy White says:

Did anyone else notice that PA announcer ? WTF?

  79. Total Dominication says:

He’s not going to set-up for Mariano idiot.

  80. forensicnucchem says:

That was not a swing, damn ump.

  81. Cy Farnsworth says:

Just for the record: if Kerry Wood becomes “the 8th inning guy” we’re in trouble.

  82. Cy Farnsworth says:

“Putting their civilian clothes on,” “A microcosm of life…”

Kay is in rare form tonight.

  83. rek4gehrig says:

    Un-ring the Mink

  84. forensicnucchem says:

I’d love to see the list of accepted phrases given out to the media before each season:

    Joba Rules
    8th inning guy

  85. bexarama says:

    Actually a really good at-bat by Jeter but he Kd of course. ;_;

  86. forensicnucchem says:

Of course, they have to talk about Flaherty’s 17…

  87. Post-Flaherty #17s:

  88. I really wish Kim Jones would hire a stylist. YES must not pay her enough.

  89. forensicnucchem says:

Wow, I’m shocked that Cashman said the moves are upgrades. I fully expected he would say ‘Boy, I sure am an idiot. I wish I hadn’t made any of those trades.’

  90. Cy Farnsworth says:

…are we SURE that Kearns is a better hitter than Colin Curtis?

  91. Mike Axisa says:

Gardner woulda had it. Wait … what?

  92. Carlosologist says:

    Gardner woulda had that.

  93. All-Star Carl says:

    Horrible Job by BG.

  94. rek4gehrig says:

    Jaso again?

  95. bexarama says:

Whoah, Gardner, why did you dive for that? You’re smarter than that o_O

  96. BigBlueAL says:

Gardner just turned a single into a triple with 1 out. Not smart.

  97. xnyles says:

    Good try Brett

  98. forensicnucchem says:

Damn Joe Maddon using these uncharacteristic moves like having a guy who actually gets on base bat leadoff.

  99. Pat D says:

    Dumb play by the Gritster.

  100. whozat says:

    …did a catcher just triple?

  101. rek4gehrig says:

    Shut up Jones, please

Is it just me or does Berkman also look like Bruce Campbell?

  105. Carlosologist says:

Kay just pulled a Salty Buggah.

  106. forensicnucchem says:

lol at the camera panning out when talking about Berkman’s ‘fat’.

  107. Jake H says:

If they don’t bring the infield in that might have been a catch.

  108. Carlosologist says:

    Clutch GIDP induced by Javy.

  109. Cy Farnsworth says:

Vazquez has gotten into a lot of trouble so far, but he’s also been making big pitches.

  110. rek4gehrig says:

Kay pay attention…Tex bats before Arod

  111. All-Star Carl says:

Tex looks really wide in the Box

  112. bexarama says:

    Trivia answer: Buehrle?

  113. Pat D says:

    That Bangladesh sign? Absolutely retarded.

  114. Carlosologist says:

I think the Rays play the most aggressive shift against Teixeira.

    • forensicnucchem says:

He has a .644 OPS against them, so they’re doing something right against him. Only the Angels and Tigers are lower.

  115. All-Star Carl says:

We look so bad against this team.

  116. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Cano’s gotta carry this team.

  117. Kevin in Delectable Princeton says:

    Cano is beating as usual.

  118. Carlosologist says:

Cano has the sweetest lefty swing since Bonds.

  119. Cy Farnsworth says:

When Cano’s hitting the ball the other way with authority, he’s scary good.

  120. Kit says:

C’mon, Swish. You need to come through here.

  121. Carlosologist says:

That thing on Garza’s chin had one big pointy hair on the end.

  122. forensicnucchem says:

Flaherty sounds so surprised that there are more RBI opportunities when you’re batting behind someone with a .390 OBP instead of a .330 OBP.

It’s almost like RBI are based on other players in front of you instead of just yourself.

  123. claybeez says:

Man, crickets in here when it comes to A-Rod’s suckitude. Saving it up for Jetes?

    • Mike Axisa says:

How long as A-Rod’s suckiness lasted? How long has Jeter’s? Okay then.

      • Slappy White says:

      • whozat says:

ARod has been bad for about two months, looking at his splits. Course, Jeter’s been a) worse, and b) bad basically all season.

      • claybeez says:

Okay. Yourself. I know you love Keith Law, Mike, and your impression is spot on lately! Guys were bashing Jeter after ’08. Then in ’09 all is forgiven. Now, he’s struggling again. Maybe, he’s done. He is blowing. But, I wouldn’t count him out. And A-Rod. He’s helping the most in RBI. Your favorite stat.

Seriously, I take it lightly. Tongue in cheek. But, there is a gap here, maybe generational. Most guys on here are just as much fan boys of A-Rod as the Jeter fan boys they crack up over. To me, Jeter, Mo, Bernie, Posada, Andy and others (El Duque, Leyritz…) ended an 18 year long nightmare during my youth. I’ll always appreciate them even when frustrated. Maybe that’s my bias, but you have yours.

A-Rod’s power numbers are down. I believe his ISOD is down. I’m pulling for him, but sorry I’m just as/more worried about a guy with a hip injury at 35 (see Lowell) who’s around 7+ more years and potentially in decline than I am a 2-4 yr deal for Jeter. Jeter may already be in Cooperstown while A-Rod’s still on the field. I’m not wishing A-Rod ill. I want him to bounce back. But, how bout a little balance?

    • Carlosologist says:

      If Alex’s career 106 WAR sucks, I don’t know what’s good.

  124. I’m still curious as to what number Kerry Wood wears. He’s worn 34 his entire life in the bigs, but it’s taken (AJ) and 28 through 38 are all either currently in use or permanently retired.

He can’t invert it, either, since 43 is Marte. And half of 34 is 17, now issued.

25 (which would be one less than 3 and one more than 4)?
    68 (34 doubled)?

    No good choices.

  125. All-Star Carl says:

Did Michael Kay ever check the teams Javy was on?

  126. Alan says:

Can someone please get Garza a pair of scissors?

  127. whozat says:

did javy throw an eephus on the second pitch?

  128. BigBlueAL says:

I wonder if Linda Hogan and her fiance are at the game tonight.

  129. bexarama says:

Oh my God Phil Coke STILL does that thing with the pointing on what he thinks is a pop-up

  130. Slappy White says:

No Kay, those are NOT trades

  131. forensicnucchem says:

It was nice of Boesch and Jackson to discuss who should pick up the ball at the wall for awhile there.

  132. The Goose says:

Ugh. I feel for Javy. Hate this.

  133. smurfy says:

Garza looks moorish. His goatee looks like the Pharaoh.

  134. JobaWockeeZ says:

Someone tell the Yankees Javier Vazquez isn’t pitching.

  135. BigBlueAL says:

Was anybody here hanging out with Snookie when she got arrested yesterday?

  136. baby carlos says:

power hitting, run padding Yankees… good thing they outscored the indians in the last game to keep that RS number high.

    • whozat says:

You’re right, they’ve totally lucked their way to the best record in baseball.

    • bexarama says:

We’re losing and the offense doesn’t look great. Hey, baby carlos, fancy seeing you here.

      • baby carlos says:

just checking to see how the game is going and see that they have 2 hits. Figured the blistering they had towards the end of last nights game would carry over…Oh wait, that is right they had 1 hit after the first….

But Matt Garza is a stud and did throw a no hitter so…”that is baseball”

        • Yeah, sure, you’re just “checking in”. You’re not constantly lurking during every game to see when the Yankees are struggling so that you can make a beeline to RAB and bitch and moan about how flawed we are. It’s a total coincidence that when the team is doing well, you’re never here “checking in” during those moments, huh?

          (rolls eyes)

          • bexarama says:

Pretty much. And seriously, baby carlos, how many times have people said this about you?

            • baby carlos says:

Dude, I could be positive all the time and would still catch shit. There are 5 people allowed free range to basically paraphrase all the negative comments and the ass kissing public says”yep, good point”. So like it really matters.

It is like people, inherently evil and self serving. If you think people are naturally nice and have good intentions, you become a fool for their fodder.

          • baby carlos says:

perspective, I guess yours is slanted to just the negative ones I make. Understood….

        • whozat says:

          a) Matt Garza _is_ a very good pitcher, especially when he’s on.
          b) hey, how’re the power-hitting yanks doing now? Maybe Tex should’ve sac bunted.

          • baby carlos says:

Matt Garza is a good pitcher, not a very good pitcher… and when you add “when he’s on” well I would hope at this level any player “when they are on” would be good.

            • poster on a different computer who happens to be a deuce bag says:

So you understand then why the Yankees sometimes do, in fact, lose?

  137. JobaWockeeZ says:

The sooner the Rays go into another ballpark, the better.

  138. Dalelama says:

On the NY broadcast does Garza have one wild hair sticking out from his goatee?

  139. The Goose says:

    Frick frick frick

  140. j says:

please some regression on crawford’s day. please.

    • Jon says:

while it’s great that statistical recognition is going mainstream, it maddens me how many people cannot grasp regression. just as there is no such thing as the “law of averages”, crawford does not experience regression in just a couple of at-bats. regression to the mean requires a substantial sample size.

  141. j says:

    cmon offense…

  142. All-Star Carl says:

    Yankees break out right here.

  143. JobaWockeeZ says:

The Indians? Again the mass Yankee fans makes me shed a tear.

  144. Kevin in Delectable Princeton says:

    Big hit Puma!

    Aaaand he pops out. :(

  145. whozat says:

Nice, Jeet. Now, let’s DO something!

  146. Esteban says:

yankees must capitalize, Jeter got on base!

  147. Dalelama says:

Can anybody remember the last time Jeter pulled a ball over the head of an infielder ?

  148. tee off on this fastball. He’s throwing it a lot. Attack early in the count, let’s go.

  149. j says:

    OOOH TEX!!!!!!

  150. JobaWockeeZ says:

  151. Kevin in Delectable Princeton says:

    <3 Tex.

  152. Kit says:

    TEX!!!! And it was CRUSHED.

  153. Alex S says:

  154. bexarama says:

    Tex murdered that baseball.

  155. Dalelama says:

  156. claybeez says:

Waddya say, Alex? Now is as good a time as any.

  157. EFF says:

    By God, it’s Tex!!!!!!

  158. Cy Farnsworth says:

    You Texy Thing

  160. j says:

man… alex has been just missing on so many pitches since 599…

  161. Esteban says:

  162. ZZ says:

Kevin Long is an incredibly good hitting coach.

The Yankees have had a clear plan this inning and have known what was coming.

The first pitch Garza threw to Jeter it was strange because it looked like Jeter was determined to swing at that pitch. It wasn’t like he reacted to the pitch and swung. The ball left Garza’s hand and immediately Jeter went to swing.

Then a very patient hitter in Berkman swings at the first pitch fastball and pops it up.

Finally, Teix swings at the first pitch fastball and crushes it.

They were waiting for the first pitch fastball. They knew it was coming and it paid off.

  163. Esteban says:

Jokes aside do yall think 600 is messing with ARod?

  164. Carlosologist says:

    Sensational HR from Teixeira.

  165. All-Star Carl says:

Cano expands the zone to get to 3-2 only to strike out looking.

  166. BigBlueAL says:

You dont see Cano striking out looking much.

  167. Esteban says:

Even after that K, good lord, did anyone think Cano would be batting .333/.388/.572 at this point in the season? We all thought he was capable, but he’s just a monster now.

    • All-Star Carl says:

We all knew he could. It was just a matter of Cano putting it together. Now he’s the best player on the team.

  168. monty burns says:

    anyone know Garza pitch count?

  169. All-Star Carl says:

Yankees will add a lot more runs in the 7th.

  170. monty burns says:

Garza has maybe one more inning in him. I’d rather we hit him then their pen.

  171. Is Qualls in the Rays pen tonight? Just curious.

  172. nice shut down inning Javy

  173. monty burns says:

    hit the fucking C ring

  174. forensicnucchem says:

Javy just couldn’t go one game without a homer…

  175. Cy Farnsworth says:

I would like Javy so much more if he didn’t give up so many big flies.

    Joyce again :(

  176. Carlosologist says:

Oh my God, Joyce hit that one a mile.

  177. Pat D says:

  178. rek4gehrig says:

    Darn it

  179. Kevin in Delectable Princeton says:

Matt Joyce has now gained the reputation of Yankee killer and will never lose that title.
    Also, Javy is pissed.

  180. EFF says:

    Damn, that was drilled.

  181. Esteban says:

  182. bexarama says:

    This is all my fault for going on about how hot Matt Joyce was before ;_;

  183. Peter says:

Matt Joyce is a lean-sharp thorn.

  184. Mosh says:

Matt Joyce has lighttower power. Somebody on here yesterday was all amazed that he crushed one.

  185. monty burns says:

Time to light up Garza. 3 runs should do it.

  186. All-Star Carl says:

Seems like every series we have at least one scrub hitting us well.

  187. This game: we’re still gonna win it.

Fat Elvis comes through in the clutch.

  188. Esteban says:

Did Tampa or Detroit win the Edwin Jackson/ Matt Joyce trade then? I say it worked out all right for both teams.

  189. Cy Farnsworth says:

Let’s go Yanks. This is the inning to put up a crooked number–we’ve got a better chance against a tired Garza than their bullpen.

  190. All-Star Carl says:

  191. j says:

  192. Kevin in Delectable Princeton says:

Nick Swisher just crushed a MEATBALL.

  193. Mike Axisa says:

And Nick Swisher says “Joyce who?”

  194. Cy Farnsworth says:

    Hell. Yes.

    Swisher Sweet.

  195. monty burns says:

    I love Swisher
    the Rays killer.

  196. bonestock94 says:

  197. Esteban says:

Wait why is Carlos Pena out? I’m watching on Gameday

  198. claybeez says:

Nice Swish. Not gonna fool him a 3rd time

  199. baby carlos says:

well look at that… the “very good pitcher when he is on” seems to be just a good pitcher that he is….

Think you guys call that regressing to the mean.

  200. forensicnucchem says:

Swisher knew the curve was coming again for the 3rd straight AB. How he got up to that one I don’t know though. Impressive…

  201. FIPster Doofus says:

For a regular-season game, this is pretty fuckin’ epic.

  202. ZZ says:

I figure I will just copy and paste part of my comment from above

Kevin Long is an incredibly good hitting coach.

The changes Swish made in just one offseason are amazing.

  203. j says:

    garza’s really bendy.

  204. JobaWockeeZ says:

    That got it Cerv…

  205. baby carlos says:

Love Cervelli, but if he didn’t think that was a strike, that should worry the pitchers.

  206. bonestock94 says:

Don’t blame the ump for sucking balls.

  207. Carlosologist says:

Swish has been gravy all season. The fact that he’s improved from a low average, Three Outcomes player to a high average version is impressive. I’m confident K-Long can work his magic on Grandy like he did with Swish. Also, Gardner’s IsoD of .100 is lovely.

  208. Peter says:

I bet Kenny Williams doesnt watch Yankee games and doesnt pick up Cash$$ calls anymore. What a trade.

  209. I’m anticipating the Lance Berkman/Chad Qualls matchup that we’re going to win.

  210. Cy Farnsworth says:

Note to Michael Kay: Nick Swisher adjusting to Garza’s curveball isn’t “the game within the game.”

    It’s just the game.

  211. monty burns says:

These players need to move in with Long this offseason

Just all get a hotel in Tampa.

  212. Cy Farnsworth says:

I know the bullpen’s a man short tonight, but I’m nervous about another inning from Javy.

  213. baby carlos says:

  214. monty burns says:

    Yes Teix
I am tired of his slow starts.

  215. Peter says:

Has kerry wood joined the team or is he in transit?

  216. Mike Axisa says:

    This is less than ideal.

  217. j_Yankees says:

walks #9 hitter on 4 pitches.

/when you know a pitcher is ready to come out.

  218. monty burns says:

Jeter is jeter at this stage he will not change.
Gardner is still not fully developed as a hitter. His power this year is a sign that he can be a 280s guy with 10-12 hrs a year.

  219. BigBlueAL says:

Hip Hop Hooray!! Old-school at the Trop.

  220. forensicnucchem says:

I know he’s been pretty good lately, but I just can’t avoid thinking about Logan’s prior suckiness everytime he comes in a game.

  221. monty burns says:

Please be the good Logan not the scrub.

  222. claybeez says:

    Good job by Logan

  223. Cy Farnsworth says:

I really like this Boone Logan.

  224. All-Star Carl says:

    Logan. GJ.

  225. j_Yankees says:

  226. Carlosologist says:

Remember when Boone Logan sucked and everybody called for his head?

  227. All-Star Carl says:

    Fastball up. Change up down.

  228. bobtaco says:

Whose gonna hit some Benoit balls?

  229. ZZ says:

Logan’s fastball is extremely tough to hit as a LHB when he throws it for strikes and as long as he throws strikes with that fastball his ok slider will be effective as well.

If he has refined his control he is going to be a better pitcher than Coke.

  230. forensicnucchem says:

A-Rod game winning HR this inning? PLEASE…

  231. monty burns says:

    Fat elvis goes deep here.

  232. Total Dominication says:

This series is awesome, minus the loss, and how about this Boone Logan motherfucker?

  233. ecks says:

Anyone know how many runs we’re losing over the rest of the season by not having the optimal batting order out there?

  234. Total Dominication says:

Uhg, not a sparkling debut, the tabloid media will go insaine.

  235. monty burns says:

OK Berkman will need some time to adjust.

  236. bexarama says:

    Berkman is now a bust!!!

  237. Cy Farnsworth says:

When exactly did Joaquin Benoit become unhittable?

    I’m being 100% serious, he’s on Another Level ™ /Flaherty

  238. Esteban says:

Berkman sucks, what a terrible trade

/troll’d (was gonna call out people but decided against it)

  239. hello9 says:

I know there’s a game on and fat elvis is a bust and yadda yadda but Tim Redding of all people may force the yanks hand into giving him a spot start. The guy’s been a beast.

Also everybody point and laugh at Casey Kelly!

    • bexarama says:

      What happened to Casey Kelly?

      • JobaWockeeZ says:

        He’s been sucking this year.

      • hello9 says:

        3 innings 7 runs today

To be fair he’s still a great prospect and has excellent stuff – and he’s pretty young and only recently converted to a full time pitcher. However, he’s approaching an era near 5.5 at this point and obviously isn’t the uberprospect that sox folks were hyping him to be (i’d even argue kalish or iglesias are their best prospects right now).

Nice to see DRob getting back in the flow.

  240. monty burns says:

    Drob or Joba?

  241. Total Dominication says:

This is the most I’ve been excited about a game since the WS.

  242. monty burns says:

I go to Joba here because like the article in here Joba is better with no one on base
Where Drob is a fireman type

  243. Total Dominication says:

Uch, I woulda put in Joba.

  244. bobtaco says:

    Joba to teh 10th

  245. lily-bk says:

its amazing how bad th yanks look against tampa….very frustrating

  246. Total Dominication says:

One of the best players in baseball? MVP candidate? All better descriptions and more glowing than “all star”.

  247. Peter says:

Well Joba did pitch 2 innings though he didnt waste many bullets.

  248. Cy Farnsworth says:

I like Robertson here. Joba went 2 innings yesterday, this gives us the chance to get him a night off if we score in the 9th.

  249. monty burns says:

that C ring homer is in the 500ft range of a normal stadium.

  250. Cy Farnsworth says:

    Let’s see the 2-2 curve.

  251. swisher's fauxhawk says:

    GJ, D-Rob.

  252. The Goose says:

  253. Total Dominication says:

Good, he’s ready for the 9th if we don’t score.

  254. Kevin in Delectable Princeton says:

D-Rob is doing his best to defend his K/9 crown.

  255. forensicnucchem says:

    Robertson = unhittable

  256. Esteban says:

    K-Rob is baaaaack.

  257. Pat D says:

Gotta love Linda McMahon campaign ads.

  259. Kevin in Delectable Princeton says:

RAB commercial during 9th inning of critical play-off implication game. Very exciting.

  260. hello9 says:

D-Rob is worth every penny just for the spit takes he’ll force out of peripherals obsessed baseball fans.

  261. Pat D says:

Isn’t that a ball he should have driven quite a ways?

    I don’t think he’s hitting 30 HR this year.

  262. BigBlueAL says:

Man, an 89 mph kill me fastball right down the middle and Arod pops it up to SS.

  263. All-Star Carl says:

Pop up after pop up. God this is horrible to watch.

  264. Total Dominication says:

    Little under it.

  265. All-Star Carl says:

  266. monty burns says:

    Where Wood fits in
    Playoff BP
    Mo closer
    Wood Drob setup
    Logan/Marte Loogy
    Hughes Matchup strike out
    Joba longman?

    • Total Dominication says:

      MO closer
      primary Hughes- setuo
      D-rob -threat diffuser
      Joba secondary setup
      Marte/Logan Loogy
      Wood -longman

  267. swisher's fauxhawk says:

    A laser!

  268. JobaWockeeZ says:

  269. Pat D says:

Robinson Cano is good at baseball.

  270. Cy Farnsworth says:

    Don’t ya know.

  271. forensicnucchem says:

  272. claybeez says:

That was beautiful. Giving me chills.

  273. Kit says:

    ROBINSON CANO coming through!

  274. Mike Axisa says:

    Motherfucker no he didn’t.

  275. The Goose says:

    Robby Cano, don’t ya know!

  276. Total Dominication says:

Robinson Cano is officially back on fire!

  277. monty burns says:

    Warm up the Sandman.
    thank you robbie.

  278. rek4gehrig says:

    I’m speechless

  279. Carlosologist says:

  280. Alan says:

Holy crap, that ball went a LONG way.

  281. Kevin in Delectable Princeton says:

  282. Pasqua says:

Even better? Robbie Cano is DONATING that homerun to Alex Rodgriguez!

#600 baby!!! Our national nightmare is over!

  283. baby carlos says:

    crushed….other yankees can only admire.

  284. hello9 says:

fuck me for living in DC and not getting to see the experience that is Hollywood Cano.

  285. bexarama says:

Heh, with the homers and the clutch, Robbie is just fucking with A-Rod’s head now. ;P

  286. forensicnucchem says:

The wind must be blowing out tonight. Homers are getting crushed.

  287. BigBlueAL says:

    That was a fucking BOMB.

  288. smurfy says:

damn. What would we do without Robbie.

  289. Total Dominication says:

Was Cano on the potg poll, because he has 2 doubles and a game winning (Mo-willing) HR.

  290. Peter says:

Me thinks Arod wants to hit #600 @ YS.

  291. Nintendo vs Sega says:

  292. ecks says:

  293. JGS says:

Why did “MVP” get eaten by the spam filter?

  294. Total Dominication says:

  295. Cy Farnsworth says:

Let’s wrap this baby up. Enter Sandman.

  296. BigBlueAL says:

Gardner with a classic expression to Cano’s HR.

  297. Sleepykarl says:

Didn’t Miranda hit the scoreboard with his first ML HR?

  298. ecks says:

Damn that fine swing. On the team, only A-Rod’s is sweeter.

  299. Slappy White says:

We need to find a way to hack into the Trops sound system and cue Enter Sandman…..we can do it , we are deep and thick

  300. Pat D says:

Nothing like blasting Enter Sandman on your computer when it can’t play for real.

  301. tatedoggfatha says:

    Let’s go Mo!

  302. JobaWockeeZ says:

This lineup proves it’s deepness and thickness.

  303. Esteban says:

If Cano doesn’t get some serious MVP talk, I’m gonna be as mad as I can get about MVP voting (not much, but still)

  304. Kit says:

It’s okay, Lance. Kevin will fix you.

  305. All-Star Carl says:

S-Rod? Just stop Michael Kay. Please.

  306. Cy Farnsworth says:

It’s sad how the crowd is louder cheering for the Yankees than the Rays.

Though I do appreciate that the Yankees fans in Florida didn’t bring cowbells.

  307. Adam says:

haha awesome. Robbie hit it right near the Dominican flag hanging in the crowd.

  308. forensicnucchem says:

A-Rod sitting between Cano and Tex asking for the extra distance from their homers to create one for him.

  309. monty burns says:

One more and we walk out of Tampa in first place regardless of tomorrows outcome.

  310. All-Star Carl says:

    Dammit :(

  311. Total Dominication says:

The only hit that Mo can give up.

  312. Damn broken bat bloopers. Oh well, comes with the territory.

  313. monty burns says:

I hate those broken bat hits against Mo.

  314. ZZ says:

It is amazing how bad the Rays look against the Yankees.

Mariano showing Soriano how it’s done.

  315. All-Star Carl says:

  316. claybeez says:

Good win. Good game. Good baseball.

  317. monty burns says:

    1st place is safe

  318. JGS says:

Great, great, great, great, great win

  319. bexarama says:

We look so terrible against the Rays.

  320. V says:

Am I the only one thinking the Blue Jays and Nationals are going to regret not trading their trade chips at the deadline? Do the Blue Jays even take advantage of their draft picks?

  321. Total Dominication says:

This series might be the epicest? 3 game series in a long time.

  322. smurfy says:

yow, what a great game we got.

  323. Peter says:

The mediocre team has beaten the better team. Its called Fluke.

    / baby Carlos’d

  324. forensicnucchem says:

    Great win Yanks!!!

  325. The Goose says:

That’s how you win right there.

… And look, no amateurish celebrations for a game in July. That’s class.

  326. monty burns says:

Boo Hoo Rays 7 game winning streak…toast.

  327. SouthernYankeeFan says:

Leaving Tampa still leading the division.

  328. Total Dominication says:

Soriano is having a decent year KIm, but it seems like a pretty random and some what exaggerated statement for the situation.

  329. rek4gehrig says:

    Order restored

  330. BigBlueAL says:

Cano is the best post-game interview by far. lol

  331. That was the deepest, thickest win of the season.

  332. hello9 says:

  333. Esteban says:

Great win. The Yanks looked great tonight, showing why they’re the class of the league.

  334. smurfy says:

I think Mo’s WAR just thickened.

  335. T-Dubs says:

Deep and thick win tonight. Love it.

  336. Zanath says:

What a fantastic win. Definitely one of the more exciting game of the year.

  337. Tom Zig says:

    VolCANO erupted on Rafael Soriano

  338. forensicnucchem says:

With CC going tomorrow, it’d be so awesome to come back and win this series.

  339. Total Dominication says:

Apparently the song “Hey Joe” played when Girardi replaced Javy.

  340. BigBlueAL says:

Brad Lidge just blew the game by giving up a walk-off HR to Ryan Zimmerman.

  341. Total Dominication says:

We are heavy favorites tommorow, but you I’ve heard baseball can be quite unpredictable at times.

  342. Total Dominication says:

From Pinstripe Alley “Since May 8th, Houdini has pitched to a 2.22 ERA”

  343. hello9 says:

Remember when Mo was finally going to start regressing this year? Batters’ OPS against this year: a Kevin Cash’esque .394
    The best in Mo’s career.

  344. Total Dominication says:

Mo has the best era of his career by a whole .45, and his best WhIp buy .025, and his best era+ by 110.

  345. nsalem says:

    All Yankee hits XBH

  346. monty burns says:

    Dear Mo
Please tweek Woods cutter to be just like yours.

  347. bexarama says:

Rays are 19-7 in July. Three of those seven losses were to the Yankees. Obviously, the Rays just can’t beat the playoff-caliber teams. And they look so bad against the Yankees. :(

(Sorry, couldn’t resist. DEEP AND THICK. That better?)

  348. LeggoMikeGallego says:

Does anyone have a link to video of Salty balls throwing 5 hoppers back to the mound?

  349. danny says:

LOL at arods post game interview

  350. forensicnucchem says:

A-Rod having fun making fun of himself in the postgame interview. I love it.

  351. http://nomaas.org/2010/07/cashmans-got-wood/

They’ve gone longer between blasts than Alex has, but this one is just dah bomb.

  352. LeggoMikeGallego says:

So who are the potential waiver candidates for utility infielder and possibly innings eater SP? Obviously pretty bottom of the barrel either way since we’ll be claiming last or next to last.

  353. Jake H says:

Huge win. D Rob’s outing was really impressive.
