Game Thread: 2010 Futures Game

Perhaps my favorite part of the All Star Break is the Futures Game, which pits a collections of baseball’s best prospect against each other. Austin Romine and Hector Noesi are representing the Yankees, a year after Jesus Montero and Manny Banuelos did the honors. Keith Law rated Romine as the 15th best prospect selected to the game (Insider req’d), though Noesi comes in towards the back of the pack. Neither player is starting the game (lineups), but don’t worry, they’ll definitely get in at some point.

ESPN2 will broadcast the game, which begins at 6pm ET. Enjoy.

  1. Pat D says:

Anyone see that other article on ESPN where they “projected” the players in this game. Noesi was Oil Can Boyd (not terrible, I guess) and Romine was Humberto Cota (NNNNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

  2. Carlosologist says:

Hellickson is starting for the US.

  3. pat says:

Dammit, so mad I can’t watch this.

  4. Nice! Thanks for the heads up Mike, today’s Yankee game is a snoozer.

  5. Joe says:

great game to watch every year. i attended the one at the Stadium in 08 and it was a fun experience as I remember Andrus, Montero, Pena (late replacement) and Sandoval were in the game.

  6. I saw someone with a Yankee hat warming up in the bullpen, looks like Noesi will be coming in next inning.

  7. nathan says:

The game is on ESPN3.com , so no bootleg sites are needed.

  8. RalphieD says:

    i love noesi’s delivery

    • This was the first time I’ve ever seen him pitch. I didn’t realize he was that tall and lanky. I’ll do a fast and dirty scouting report and see how close I get.

Nice easy delivery, nice 2 seam fastball. Couldn’t find the curveball today and looks like a guy who throws a lot of strikes and pitches to contact. Limited ceiling, and given the other arms in the system if his future will be with the Yanks it will likely be in the bullpen.

      • Joe says:

his ceiling is higher than you are giving him. the command and control will let him be a starter in the big leagues.

        • Sure, but if it’s ‘back of the rotation’ starter it will likely be elsewhere. As we saw this week, the Yanks collect aces.

          • Joe says:

Last time I checked Lee is not with the Yankees…yet. I think he has the potential to be our 5th man and could stay a while with an injury. his control is special.

  9. Dela G says:

    great job hector!

  10. pat says:

Hittin corners at 92-93. I’ll take it all day.

  11. JMK says:

Erin Andrews asked Don Baylor what his “most favorite” moment was.

Most favorite? As a reporter, you should know better.

Not that she’s there for her linguistic know-how or hard-hitting sports journalism.

  12. Raf says:

does Alonso have a spot on the Reds? are they planning on moving him from first base?

  13. The announcer just got the TTO’s wrong.

  14. Captain Jack says:

JP Riccardi ranks Boston’s farm third? WTF. Why the hell isn’t Keith Law on there instead of this stooge?

    • Pat D says:

Maybe it’s just me, but Law never looks the part for TV.

That said, I’d much rather listen to him than Ricciardi. He’d be more entertaining, for sure.

      • Captain Jack says:

Riccardi at least never shies away from being openly Rude, Keith Law is always more subtle about it.

        • Pat D says:

Not always. Did you read his chat last week? Subtle it wasn’t.

          • Captain Jack says:

I try to keep up, but I’ve been busy lately….found employment and got into Law School.

            • Pat D says:

              Good for you!

My job is such that I can completely ignore it when I’m not there. Law’s chats are always must read for me.

              From last week:
              Rob (LA):
Can you think of any – ANY – logical reason why Garret Anderson is still on the Dodgers’ roster? His OPS+ is in the 20′s.

Veteran presents – he brings little trinkets to the park and hands them out to the other players before the games. I heard the Giants want to trade for Anderson and put him behind the plate so Posey can go work on catching right-handed screwballs in AAA.

              And then later on…
              Eric (Chicago):
Regarding Garret Anderson, it’s presence, not presents like you receive for X-Mas or Birthday, KLAW you are the worst, get off ESPN.

Priceless. I’m sure those of you with two functioning neurons will forgive me sharing this one.

          • Agreed, but chat KLaw and TV KLaw are two very different animals.

  15. Pat D says:

OK, this doesn’t have to do with this game, but they just had the ad for it, so let me say this: The ESPY’s are hosted by a Red Sox fan? Great, even more chance for anti-Yankee jokes!

    • Ubu says:

Pat said- “Great, even more chance for anti-Yankee jokes!”

….Wait 2010 ESPYs host Seth Myers can create humor and/or inspire laughter?!?!?

You sir, have had enough from the bar tonight! I say good night….

  16. Romine’s in! Woo!

  17. Did Sutt just say that Lyles should be a throw in for some deal? Wtf?

  18. Jay C says:

Did Romine enter the game yet?

  19. boogie down says:

Looks like a perfect throw in the box score! The next generation of Yankee dominance showing its face… love it.

  20. Pat D says:

Not an overly terrific throw, but great result.

  21. Captain Jack says:

  22. Jay C says:

    OoO nevamind!! i See Em

  23. So who’s batting? I can has graphic?

  24. Pat D says:

I think Romine just flied out to right. Glad to see his AB was more important than talking to Theo.

    • boogie down says:

Did they even show Romine during his AB? I was completely distracted by that damn Theo interview.

Had to go to him during a Yankee’s AB, didn’t ya, ESPN?

      • Pat D says:

You know, I’m not in total agreement with everyone here who thinks that ESPN favors the Red Sox over the Yankees, but…well, that was just too coincidental.

  25. pat says:

    He flew out, BUST.

  26. boogie down says:

Theo should turn around and drop a line about how he knows a prospect when he sees one to the blonde sitting behind him.

  27. I am not prone to cursing, but… FUCK YOU ESPN!!! I listen to the brain midgets you call analysts waiting for Romine’s AB and you give me Theo Fucking Epstein giving excuses for Casey Kelly!

    • Ubu says:

Breathe….One day our Ninja Gm will perform the Highlander on Epstein and the agony will cease, Mike. “The Cashman” will strike down Theo when the time is right.

  28. So Suttcliffe thinks all of these guys are going to be All-Stars, huh?

  29. Pat D says:

This pitcher has a great ‘stache.

  30. Pat D says:

    There ya go, Austin!

  31. Cecala says:

Romine with the double! Also Lol at this Mets pitcher sucking haha.
