Montero doubles twice in SWB win
ByChad Tracy has apparently exercised his opt out clause and is no longer with Triple-A Scranton. Robby Hammock has rejoined the team following his rehab stint in the GCL, and his versatility will help ease the loss of Tracy. They still need to replace Mark Melancon; I’d like to see Ryan Pope get promoted. He’s been fantastic since moving to the bullpen and the Yanks need to see what he’s capable of before deciding whether or not to protect him from the 40-man roster after the season.
Here’s a great piece on Austin Romine. I’m pretty burnt out because of the trade deadline, so here’s a quick recap…
- Triple-A Scranton won. Jesus Montero went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Tim Redding dominated yet again with 8.1 innings of one run ball. Jon Albaladejo recorded the last two outs with ease.
- Double-A Trenton lost. Not much happened offensive with Romine resting; Dan Brewer singled. Andrew Brackman didn’t allow a baserunner until the 4th inning, but still managed to allow six runs in 5.1 IP.
- High-A Tampa won. Bradley Suttle and Corban Joseph both had multiple hits, but the night belonged to Melky Mesa, who had three hits includes a double and a homer. He’s now nine for his last 14 with three homers. Nothing exciting on the mound, just a scoreless inning from Pat Venditte.
- Low-A Charleston won. Slade Heathcott went hitless in three at-bats, but he did draw two walks. J.R. Murphy is certifiably en fuego with another two hits with Rob Lyerly and Luke Murton picked up three apiece. Brett Marshall gave up three runs in four innings.
- Short Season Staten Island lost. Eduardo Sosa and Kelvin DeLeon each picked up a single. Boring game on the mound.
- Rookie GCL Yanks lost. Cito Culver went 3-for-4 while Evan DeLuca struck out seven in four innings of work. That’s pretty much it, nothing too exciting.

being that melky mesa is 23, is it time to push him a little and see what he has at AA? he has ops’ed over 900 the last 2 months.
How did Harold Garce cut down his walks from that disastrous 2008 campaign…
He worked with Melvin.
Can we see what Tim Redding has at the ML level now?
/hides
no need right now since Moseley was good enough his last time. nova is probably ahead of Redding to be next in line since he is already on the 40 man while Redding isnt.
We’ve seen this movie before.
If only he weren’t Tim Reddings.
For serious, I realize that Flores is in the GCL, but check it out. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....pid=570717
He’s what, 18? He has the second highest OPS in the league, and his splits vs LHP are flat out nasty.
I’m going to be interested to see where Sickels puts Sanchez and Flores in next yrs top 20.
I’m going to be interested to see where
SickelsAxisa puts Sanchez and Flores in next yrs top2030.Me too.
Sanchez we knew about but I didn’t realize Flores was any sort of legit.
Henry Pena is 19 and has a 0.974 OPS. He has 22 K in 77 AB, so it’s probably not sustainable, but that’s still impressive.
Ben Badler loves him, had him on his guys to watch list.
what next year…he is due for a new list in less than 3 weeks after the signings are done.
Eh, I didn’t want to deviate too far from hello9′s comment.
what i like more is more BB than K 15BB 14K in 27 games
Shoot – My little dog almost weighs as much as that guy.
Now that Melancon is gone and we should have a domino of promotions can we please send Venditte up?
Second. He’s old for high-A and dominating. It’s about time they push him to see what he can do.
Free Pat Movement
Jon Ortiz before Venditte in my mind.
yes, ortiz should already be in trenton
I thought that too but Mike Ashmore suggested to me on Twitter that it might be Sublett that goes up. He should be done in the GCL. It makes sense also.
Brackman pulled a Phil Hughes.
Was great for 5 innings and then lost it in the 6th.
Adeiny Hechavarria has only 12 walks in 281 ABs this year? I know he might have been rushed but damn. Even Cito Culver has 12 BBs in 115 ABs, though at a lower level.
yea, his walk rate is awful but his K rate isnt too bad for someone so inexperienced.
Adeiny Hechavarria has only 12 walks in 281 ABs this year?
That’s downright Francoeurian.
That’s about the same as my walk rate in The Show. Of course, that’s because I almost never see four pitches in an at bat. I make 2008 Robbie Cano look like he sees a lot of pitches.
What position?
also what is your avg, obp, and all that jazz?
Right now I’m around .400/.430/.750 through 250ish AB’s with 15 home runs. No steals because I never got the hang of base stealing.
I’m playing as Slade Heathcott, so CF.
I created a catcher, and it’s taking me forever to get through the season since I have to catch all nine innings. It was cool at first, but it has lost it’s appeal. I might just choose a minor leaguer to use instead.
Stealing is hard too, especially because I’m slower than Jorge Posada.
Yuniesky Betancourt v2
He’s not been rushed, Toronto wanted him in AA from the start but had him put in a few reps in A just to get his feet wet.
He is not a patient hitter and puts lots of balls into play, as you can tell by the K and BB numbers he sports. He will probably be a high BABIP good average/meh OBP/meh power guy.
So he can be expected to do something like .300/.345/.360?
I’d say that’s too optimistic. That OBP and AVG will not translate that well when he sees faster fastballs and better breaking balls.
.275/.310/.370 seems about right.
Ah, ok. Didn’t know that so my bad. Still, doesn’t it seem somewhat aggressive? From what I heard, he was pretty raw, so I would imagine the organization would let him develop properly. With Escobar, it’s not like they have an urgency for a SS, unless they think Escobar will be too risky.
Whatever it is, I’m glad the Yanks didn’t sign him. A good average/meh OBP/meh power guy isn’t bad at all at SS but the bonus he got seemed to be too much for a prospect like that.
Well you can’t really look at it that way–he was promoted before Escobar came around and they were fasttracking him. He’s not without pro (Cuban league) and international experience and was clearly signed with coming up to MLB in 2011 in mind. In fact that’s sorta why he signed with them!
Seems to me the hit tools on these Cuban SS are really overrated. Him and Iglesias both have a lot of hacker in them. They’re young for their leagues and all that but you want to see a little more patience.
Hmmm, yea you’re right. It makes sense that they gave him so much money then. Hopefully, they think he’s ready and give us Escobar for free.
Also, agreed about the Cuban SS point, though Jose Iglesias will be the greatest SS to ever step foot on Earth (at least according to many Boston writers).
Iglesias is Ozzie Smith, Honus Wagner, and Jed Lowrie all rolled into one.
Is Cito 18 yet? Also, Slade has been walking a lot more than i expected him to. I’m impressed.
Cito is 17 right now. His birthday is in August I believe.
I was at the Scranton game and here were my observations:
1) Montero is a beast at the plate. First pitch leading off the second he doubled to the right center wall (371 ft) – stand up. He grounded out hard to the left side his second time up. He smoked a double off the LF wall 3rd time up-it was hit so hard the left fielder was frozen and Jesus had to hustle and slide into second although it wasn’t close. 4th time up he grounded out to second. No swings and misses.
2) His stance is wide and slightly open with his front foot on it’s toes as he sets but he moves his front foot back as a timing mechanism. His torque and wrist strength are amazing.
3)I asked him if he is faster than Jorge and he said “I no fast” and he is right. He may be as slow as Jorge! His running mechanics may be improved though.
4) I thought his defense was very good. He called the game and Redding NEVER shook him off. I confirmed this with Wynegar after the game. He throws well and the one SB in the 9th was a good throw but a bit late-possibly blamed on big Alby’s delivery. He framed pitches well and although we didn’t get all the close calls we did get called strike 3 to end it so the ump didn’t try to school Jesus.
5) He seems happy with lots of smiles and his teammates obviously like him. His parents were at the game and I met his dad who speaks less English than his son.
6) I caught a foul ball with the glove that came down from the upper deck to field level. It was a good time.
Nice report. He hits doubles at an awesome rate. Some of those doubles should be hrs in a couple yrs.
I was also at the game and I spoke to Jesus and he speaks very good English. It keeps improving every time I talk to him. His double in the 2nd inning was impressive as I like when he goes to right center. He wasn’t getting the close calls even though he was framing them well. Redding was impressive and I noticed Nunez is faster than people think with 21 SB’s and only been caught 3 times. Alby got the job done as usual to close out Redding’s great performance. I saw his mom and dad there also.
Sorry I missed you Joe-would have enjoyed talking shop. You didn’t happen to catch a foul ball too? About Alby-I noticed that he taps/shakes his back foot on the rubber several times before stopping to deliver. It is the opposite foot of what Mariano does with his front left….never saw that before. I wonder if he has always done that and if it is distracting to the hitter in upsetting their rhythm. Seems to be working…
Scranton games are a great value and very enjoyable.
indeed and no i didnt catch one but i was seated near the one the guy caught with his hat.
On #6 the glove was in my hand and only the ball came down from the upper deck
