Montero homers as each affiliate picks up a win

By Mike Axisa

Fifth round pick Tommy Kahnle has agreed to terms and will join the Staten Island Yanks tomorrow. His physical isn’t until Monday, and once he passes that he’ll jump right into the team’s bullpen. Kahnle made 13 total appearances in the Cape Cod League this summer, striking out 14 in nine innings of work. The bad news? Ten walks.

Meanwhile, Baseball America posted a list of ten prospects who have increased their stock since the start of June (sub. req’d). Jesus Montero (“A scout who saw Montero this month didn’t see the outstanding raw power than Montero has shown in the past, but noted that Montero consistently drove the ball into the gaps even if he did bail on the breaking ball on occasion.”) came in at number two, David Phelps (“His secondary stuff is fringy, but he mixes a slurvy curveball, a short slider and a change with solid sink and throws them all for strikes, making him an option for the back of the rotation or middle-relief work.”) at number eight.

Oh, and David Adams? Turns out it was a broken ankle. That explains why he’s been out so long.

  1. I like days like this. Now we just need some more Maquinito.

  2. With his diverse home run pattern, I can see why the “scout” Baseball America mentions would say he doesn’t have the power that he’s shown in the past.

    /sarcasm

  3. I didn’t know Mesa was that old.

  4. Steve H says:

A scout who saw Montero once doesn’t outweigh the rest of the scouts who have seen him for years. Maybe it was Jayson Stark’s scout who thinks Cervelli>>>>Montero.

    • Angelo says:

      Agreed.

I’m not too worried about the comments on Montero.

    • V says:

Yeah. I talked to a scout when I was at the game a couple weeks ago (Montero did nothing) who is at about half of Scranton’s home games, and I asked about Montero and his catching. His only response was “He’s gonna hit.”

  5. Total Dominication says:

Homers for Jesus, Romine, and Culver! Still, where the hell is Sanchez!?!??

  6. Gonzo says:

Kahnle might be a good reliever one day. He just needs a pitch to go with his fastball.

  7. forensicnucchem says:

Anyone here trust/not trust this guy Patrick Teale of pinstripesplus for any reason? They always have him on the BP show and didn’t know if it’s worth listening to what he says.

    • He has tons of sources and access to players and scouts. He seems to me to be overly optimistic, but his scouting reports and information is second to none.

    • Nick says:

Im a subscriber and former intern for Patrick and PP, the access is second to none for Yankee prospect information, articles, etc. Im not just talking the upper levels, Patrick gets info and the low-down for the international signings, Dominican and fall instructs camps etc. directly from the Yankee brass.

So glad to see him on YES, he’s also contributed on the big NY radio shows over the past few years too. Fransesca had him on in 2007 to talk about Joba when the Gagne trade talks were happening.

Now if we can just get YES to air some Milb games we’d be talking :-)

Seriously though give Patrick and PP a try, believe there’s a 7-day free trial. There’s also a free board to contribute as well to talk the big club and minors as well.

      • forensicnucchem says:

        Ok, cool. Thanks guys.

      • Don W says:

I too am a PP subscriber. The amount of information Patrick provides is astounding. How people do you know that have actually gone down to the Yankee’s Dominican training facility and attends extended spring training? The guy has unbelievable connections in the scouting community.

Oh, just an FYI, Patrick is actually a Mets fan so while being unbiased is impossible it’s easier for a guy who doesn’t actually see the world thorough pinstriped glasses.

  8. Reggie C. says:

If Montero’s consistently showing HR power to the opposite field, he’s gonna love Yankee Stadium.

  9. Joe says:

How hard was Kahnle throwing in Cape Cod League reportedly?

  10. Carlosologist says:

Mike, is Mesa a prospect or just an org player? I think they should just bump him up to AA just to see what happens.

    • Mike Axisa says:

He’s a prospect, but a Grade-C guy. Super toolsy, but old for his level and still needs to work on making contact.

      • RollingWave says:

aka one in a few hundred you might end up with a Alfonso Soriano, and in most other cases just another Melky Mesa

        • Brian in NH says:

Not entirely a bad thing! If he ends up as another soriano then we can trade him for a guy of A-Rod caliber and then he can go on and be a head case and complain about his position for other teams.

          • Angelo says:

Not sure if you understood what he said.

Melky Mesa is NOT Soriano. Soriano was a great offensive player at one time. He’s saying that there are a lot of prospects like Mesa, that once in a blue moon become Soriano. Mesa is not one of those cases.

  11. Johan Iz My Brohan says:

What does Schaeffer Hall project to be? He seems like he could be an excellent reliever; I think he would be more successful in that role.

    • zs190 says:

I’m not sure his stuff plays up enough to be a reliever. I thought I read that he tops out around 86ish mph, could be wrong but reports on his stuff seems pretty meh. Polished guy though, maybe he ends up as LOOGY down the road, wouldn’t bet on him having more than a cup of tea in the majors though.

  12. Pat D says:

Wow, so maybe Jack Z’s apprehensions were valid after all.

    (He’s still a dick.)

    /Harry Doyle’d

  13. Total Dominication says:

    Is Ramos similar to Romine?

    • Gonzo says:

He seemed to be before this year. Ramos still has the D, but he regressed this year offensively. Someone said it was due to trouble with breaking pitches. He definitely has the D, so he will make the bigs. It’s a question of whether he can be a starter or backup. The Nats have D. Norris too, so maybe one of the two will step-up. From a value stand point, even if he is a back-up, it’s a good deal. 3 years of a good backup for the league minimum is pretty good.

    • zs190 says:

Not as good as Romine. Supposedly his D is quite good but the bat is not as good as Romine’s and he’s had some injury issues. Has been struggling quite a bit this season. Upside is every day catcher I think, could end up as a backup if the bat doesn’t develop.

  14. Dealin' Dellin says:

    System Sweep!

  15. Angelo says:

Culver is now the most exciting prospect in the GCL. Maquinito I miss you dearly.

    • Joe says:

CUlver is a first round pick so I find him exciting

    • Brian in NH says:

Its hard to get really excited for guys down that low unless you completely annihilate the competition like El Maquinito. But seeing how Cito is a first rounder with a decent amount of investment I would say he’s interesting to watch.

  16. I Am Not The Droids You're Looking For says:

So ummm…is it time to be worried about Sanchez? Or was that point about seven missed games ago?

Would someone with some serious ins get us some real info please?

  17. Adam B says:

    Austin Bromine…

    It’s gonna be a thing

  18. Plank says:

    Mesa is 23, not 24.

  19. wilcymoore27 says:

That was a DOTF to please the eyes !!!

  20. Doug says:

Do we give Heathcott and his 28.4% K% a free pass this year?

    • camilo gerardo says:

i’d say so. another round of extendedST should help big time. he has the swing speed. he just needs the little tricks.
