Game 108: Hello, old friend

By

Who could forget? (AP Photo/Bill Kostroun)

It’s been what, two and a half months since the Yankees last played the Red Sox, and obviously a lot has changed since then. Javy Vazquez, tonight’s starter, has done a complete 180 and been the team’s best and most consistent starter since that series. The Yanks have added a few pieces, most notably Lance Berkman and Kerry Wood, and both Jorge Posada and Curtis Granderson have returned from the disabled list. Mark Teixeira is back from the dead, ditto the bullpen.

The Red Sox, meanwhile, have lost Dustin Pedroia, Kevin Youkilis, and Jason Varitek to injury. Jacoby Ellsbury is back though, same with Josh Beckett. Most importantly, the Yanks were three games back in the division at that time. Now they’re on top by half-a-game. A slim margin indeed, but I’ll take it. Boston, meanwhile, is six full games back in the division and in need of a huge surge this month if they want to make some noise in a playoff race.

On this very date last season, these same two teams kicked off a four game series in Bronx, and I’m sure you remember what happened. The Yanks won all four games, including that epic 15-inning scoreless game, effectively burying the Sox and claiming the top spot in the division for good. I’ll happily take a repeat of that, and that starts with a win tonight.

Here’s the lineup…

Jete, SS
Swish, RF
Tex, 1B
A-Rod, 3B
Robbie, 2B
Berk, DH
Grandy, CF
Cerv, C
Gardy, CF

And on the bump, it’s Javy Vazquez.

First pitch is scheduled for a little after 7pm ET, and you can watch on either My9 locally of MLB Network national. Enjoy the game folks.

Let’s kickass guys. By next Tuesday we’ll be up nine games on the Sox.

  2. Dirty Pena says:

Why isn’t Jorge in? Not complaining, just asking.

  3. Wooderson says:

    ALRIGHT ALRIGHT ALRIIIGHT

  4. All Star Carl says:

What did you guys think of the A-Rod interview?

  5. ChrisR says:

I was at that game that the picture is from…best game I’ve ever been to, by far

    • bexarama says:

One of my favorite games ever. I can’t even imagine being there.

(Except MLB should invent some kind of rule where if a relief pitcher blows a starting pitcher’s win, then the team comes back to win, that relief pitcher who blew the lead shouldn’t get the win. >:( )

  6. Brad Toughy says:

The original timetable for Pedroia was 4-6 weeks and it’s been 6 weeks. Good to see all that seated batting practice and kneeling infield practice paid off.

    • Tom Zig says:

Funny thing is that the doctors said cut the shit or you’ll be out part of next year too.

      • bexarama says:

Supposedly Youk already knew he was hurt and tried to play through it… and he injured himself even worse. That’s why Boston fans really need to get off Jacoby’s ass. Don’t make him rush back, guys.

        • JGS says:

I think the canonization of Cal Ripken hasn’t helped matters either. Unless it’s a very minor injury, “playing through it” probably hurts the team.

  7. jim p says:

mlb.com says Kaat is doing their game. Any time I don’t have to hear “Michael Kay’s Fake Controversies And Shallow Thoughts Is More Important Than The Actual Game Show” is a wonderful thing.

    • JGS says:

MLB Network is running the game with Kaat and Costas. However, if you are in the NY area, it will be blacked out.

      • jim p says:

        Hmmm. Aaaaaaaarrrrrrrgh.

I wonder if Kay will break his record of 9 batters in a row without talking about the count or anyone actually on the playing field.

  8. camilo gerardo says:

really? no jopo after a day off? You better make me look like a douch, francisco!

  9. nsalem says:

Especially in a game with playoff ramifications I am very unhappy to see Jorge on the bench (unless he is still hurting). This also puts undue pressure on Berkman.

  10. bexarama says:

If Javy has a poor start, this is gonna be fuuuuunnnnn.

  11. Carlosologist says:

In the playoffs, I want to hear this chant from the Stadium: “Let’s go Javy! (clap clap clapclapclap)

  12. Mike Axisa says:

    I hope these really aren’t 81 mph fastballs…

  13. All Star Carl says:

Nooo Javy you couldn’t start like this man.

  14. Carlosologist says:

    JAVY WHY? ;_;

  15. JGS says:

    Fuck David Ortiz

  16. whozat says:

yeah, Ortiz wasn’t WAITING for that. Good call, Frankie/Javy.

  17. Kiersten says:

Oh that was a horrible pitch.

  18. mike c says:

the HR is fine, but no BB’s please

  19. Steve says:

“The Yanks won all four games, including that epic 15-inning scoreless game”

They were so good last year, they didn’t even need runs to win…

  20. Cnight_UP says:

could ortiz’s fat ass get around the bases and into the dugout any slower…

    • JGS says:

Slowest home run trots of the season (via Wezen-ball’s tater trot tracker)

      1. Luke Scott – June 30, 35.76* secs.
      * Injured during trot
      2. David Ortiz – May 24, 30.59 secs.
      3. David Ortiz – May 17, 29.81
      4. David Ortiz – May 14 (#2), 29.42
      5. David Ortiz – June 29, 29.31
      6. Alex Gonzalez – Apr. 21, 29.28
      7. David Ortiz – May 14 (#1), 29.07
      8. David Ortiz – May 1 (#2), 28.95
      9. David Ortiz – May 26, 28.94
      10. Orlando Cabrera – May 5, 28.90

  21. Brad Toughy says:

I liked the washed up version of David Ortiz better.

  22. whozat says:

That changeup 2 feet off the plate isn’t really a useful pitch, guys…

  23. All Star Carl says:

Could never understand how a grown man could call another man Big Papi. Whateva.

  24. Leo says:

1 run isn’t insurmountable by any means. Let’s hope the offense lights up Buchholz.

  25. mike c says:

buccholz looks like he just got off phish tour

  26. All Star Carl says:

I think the gun may be off today.

  27. mike c says:

    derek jeter = babe ruth

  28. forensicnucchem says:

    Save that ball? Really Al?

  29. All Star Carl says:

2-0 count and you don’t make him throw a strike? Come on Swish.

  30. swisher's fauxhawk says:

    Tex message!

  31. forensicnucchem says:

Wow, talk about an uppercut swing. Yeah TEX!!!!!

  32. mike c says:

    wicked cold guys

  33. Carlosologist says:

    I <3 Mark Teixeira.

  34. Mike Axisa says:

Another first inning two run homer.

  35. JGS says:

What is it with this team and first inning 2-run homers?

  36. bexarama says:

So far I’ve seen a lotta hangers.

  37. Slappy White says:

    Is Bucholtz’s mascara running ?

  38. JobaWockeeZ says:

Boston fans call Swish a douche? WTF is Beckett then. A saint?

  39. All Star Carl says:

How many days in a row have we hit a 2 run homer in the first inning?

  40. JobaWockeeZ says:

That’s a real second baseman, Boston.

  41. mike c says:

cano just makes it look too easy

  42. bexarama says:

Buchholz has only given up 7 HR all year. Two of them are to Teixiera.

  43. Carlosologist says:

I think people will remember this picture as the defining moment of Boggs’ career.

    http://legendsrevealed.com/spo.....horse1.jpg

  44. JobaWockeeZ says:

…Looking like a bad decision to start Javy.

  45. Cnight_UP says:

    shitty not getting that 0 – 2 pitch….

  46. forensicnucchem says:

Can’t wait to see what dumbass team gives Beltre big money after this year…

  47. Andy in NYC (temporarily in Enemy Terrritory in Boston) says:

It’s very odd to be watching the Yankees at home, when I am in Boston, watching the Red Sox feed.

I must say I agree with all the reports of RABers that the Sawx announcers are not bad and not overly biased or homers.

    • bexarama says:

I like the NESN announcers. Don’t love them Mets announcer-style, but like them.

      • Carlosologist says:

They are actually pretty good. Only thing I don’t like is how Orsillo goes nuts after a HR from a Sox player. It’s almost Hawk-like.

      • Andy in NYC (temporarily in Enemy Terrritory in Boston) says:

Yup, they’re not nearly as offensive as you would expect the Sawx announcers to be. Actually, they’re pretty blasé.

In other news, walking down the street here, in West Roxbury, I actually saw a sign that said “Happy Summah”.
I will be so glad to get back to a city where people speak normally.

  48. bexarama says:

Uh, Cervelli, you can’t do that.

  49. swisher's fauxhawk says:

There’s Mike’s boy, Cervelli doin’ work.

  50. Carlosologist says:

Did you know I hate Cervelli? He should have called Javy off.

  51. Sweet Dick Willie says:

Fun fact: Terry Francona was the MOP of the College WS in 1980.

  52. forensicnucchem says:

I’m sure Cervelli will make up for it offensively…

  53. JGS says:

Well, that was just about inexcusable

  54. rek4gehrig says:

THAT is the kinda crap that pisses me off

  55. Carlosologist says:

    Oh peace, Ryan.

  56. Leo says:

Nice, Cervelli. Hope this error doesn’t turn to be costly.

  57. JGS says:

    Go back to AA, Kalish

  58. Carlosologist says:

FWIW, Jorge’s only made six errors on the season.

  59. Leo says:

Crap even if Javy gets out of it, we can thank Cervelli for making him work unnecessarily and getting his pitch count up.

  60. forensicnucchem says:

    Ugh…

  61. bexarama says:

    Well that was not fantastic.

  62. Klemy says:

    ughhhhh

  63. All Star Carl says:

    Confidence Javy damn. Let’s go.

  64. cano-is-the-bro says:

wow i am absolutely fuming over that cervelli error….thats just inexcusable

    JORGE GET HEALTHY PLEASE

  65. forensicnucchem says:

7th inning Singleton? At this rate he’ll be lucky to reach the 6th…

  66. Cnight_UP says:

Good thing cervelli is in there for defense…

  67. All Star Carl says:

Wow Javy is choking. Another 2 strike hit.

  68. Across the pond says:

Bleh. A stupid mistake by a stupid player and all the Javy haters will come back.

    • Humdinger says:

That was not a good play by Javy either. Pitchers are taught to stay on the mound and direct traffic on popups. Cervelli still should have caught it, though.

  69. JobaWockeeZ says:

Oh yeah starting him in fantasy wasn’t the best idea I ever had…

  70. bexarama says:

Javy isn’t sharp at all but thanks, Cervelli.

  71. JLew says:

Do you see Cashman picking up a backup catcher off the waiver wire?

  72. Carlosologist says:

This is all Frankie’s fault. Even so, Javy has to prevent this from getting out of hand.

  73. Klemy says:

I’m not sure who I hate more right now, Cervelli or Javy. /facepalm

  74. Joe says:

How bad could Montero’s defense possibly be….

  75. Nintendo vs Sega says:

    Javy kinda sucks!

  76. CaptainRaf says:

51 pitches in the 2nd. great way to start a 4 game series

  77. iYankee(next generation from Apple) says:

well this is not a good start.

  78. GermanYankee says:

Thanks Javy, u made my day. Again. °_°

  79. forensicnucchem says:

Can’t wait for the boos if Martinez gets a hit…

  80. Klemy says:

Intentionally load the bases with a guy who’s thrown this many pitches in 2 innings and already walking guys…I’m not sure how I feel about this.

  81. Paramecium Jones says:

Susan after that lst hit. “That’s what happens when you are pitching from behind in the count. you have to come in with the fast ball”

Uh Susan, the count was 1-2 at the time.

  82. iYankee(next generation from Apple) says:

Wow, reading the previous comments. Guess this game is already over. Damn that was a quick game.

  83. CaptainRaf says:

    this is getting ridiculous

  84. Klemy says:

PitchFX shows Both those 2 changes in the strike zone. How bad do they look on TV?

  85. Carlosologist says:

Wouldn’t it be nice if Joe pulled Cervelli after this inning? I mean if Cervelli catches that popup and Javy strikes out Kalish, we’re in the bottom of the third now.

    • forensicnucchem says:

I just don’t really get why Posada isn’t catching tonight in the first place. He was off yesterday already. I understand he’s almost as fragile as Nick Johnson at this point, but come on. I guess either way he’s catching the two day games or the two night games.

Sure would’ve been nice if they thought about how little Posada can play now and tried (at least as far as we know) to get a better catcher.

  86. mike c says:

okay, that could have been worse

  87. All Star Carl says:

This is gonna be an ugly game.

  88. JobaWockeeZ says:

Way to go Granderson! Someone who caught the ball…

  89. Joe says:

could have been worse, but that was pretty pitiful.

  90. bexarama says:

    That was horrendous.

(See, sometimes bexy says negative things. She does not, however, say the season/game is over after it.)

  91. iYankee(next generation from Apple) says:

So I guess I missed the Cervelli play. 3 runs all unearned and people are blaming Javy.

    Makes perfect sense…..

  92. camilo gerardo says:

ALl girardi’s fault. play the HOFers after day off? waaaa

  93. JobaWockeeZ says:

Pinch hit Jorge. Irrational or not I trust nothing good will come out of Cervelli today.

  94. ZZ says:

Javy looks like he is pushing the ball again instead of getting on top of it.

Without or without Cervelli’s error, it was only a matter of time.

Not bite on any of his pitches and everything drifting towards the middle of plate.

The Yankees are lucky the Sox are so shorthanded right now. That could be the only way this does not get really ugly like in the beginning of the season.

  95. camilo gerardo says:

lol, lowrie’s throw compated to this one guy we have on our roster

  96. JobaTheHeat62 says:

    Cervelli is back lol

  97. That’s the beginning of Cervelli’s 5-for-5 night with three homers to make up for that atrocious defensive misplay.

    /positivespin’d

  98. Paramecium Jones says:

    Frankie, starting something up.

Based on what’s happened so far, the yankess should score 18 runs off of Buchholz

  99. Carlosologist says:

Watch, Gardner homers and I’ll die of laughter.

  100. Larry David now looks like a cartoon character version of himself.

  101. So, lemme get this straight: Dustin Pedroia being injured somehow makes him more valuable?

    (rolls eyes)

  102. Mike Axisa says:

Please run Brett. Just go. Stop thinking and go on first move.

  103. All Star Carl says:

1 hour for 2 innings folks.

  104. Bryan says:

1-2-3 inning by Javy right here. Let’s get it.

  105. iYankee(next generation from Apple) says:

So having Brett on first is effective…. leads to many steals…

Oh wait, no it doesn’t, he doesn’t run anymore and Mr. Impatient can’t wait to hit an easy ground ball….

Ugh. C’mon Jetes you need to be better than that.

  106. All Star Carl says:

    Tex is crazy good

  107. Carlosologist says:

    That play was Jeterian.

  108. forensicnucchem says:

    Wow Tex!!!

Where were you on the one last inning???

  109. Mike Axisa says:

    Tex showing off the wingspan.

  110. Leo says:

    Nice catch Tex!

  111. All Star Carl says:

Kim Jones to Javy…”Javy what happend out there?”

    Javy….”I wasn’t making ma pitches :(

  112. JLew says:

    Tex=the anti-Cervelli.

  113. forensicnucchem says:

    Lucky that pitch wasn’t a homer…

  114. iYankee(next generation from Apple) says:

God I can’t stand jd drew. Just drill him next time.

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Out of all Red Sox, why? He doesn’t talk shit, he produces well and he is generally quiet about it.

Papelbon thinks he’s the best RP ever. Beckett thinks he’s god. Pedroia is just annoying. And Youk has a dead squirrel on his face.

      • Bryan says:

Out of all the Red Sox I want to punch in the face, Papelbon tops my list.

      • Across the pond says:

Can never understand some of the hate for this guy.

Beckett is a far bigger asshat

      • iYankee(next generation from Apple) says:

No argument on Beckett – wish he would have provoked Shelley Duncan the other night, that would have been Fight Club worthy. Papelbon, he is just a douche bag that gets lit up more than Rockafeller Center at Christmas.

But Drew, I think it is all the hype that surrounded him and he just looks like a cocky fuck. Can’t explain it, just gets under my skin.

      • bexarama says:

        That.

And Beltre looks like he smells something really bad.

        • forensicnucchem says:

I can’t stand when Beltre checks his swing and points to the ump himself. That really gets me for some reason.

  115. Joe says:

Wow. The only way Vazquez can throw a strike is to groove a fastball. Who’s the long man tonight, Meat-Tray?

  116. Carlosologist says:

That fact that Tex is somewhat close to his career marks in hitting (.287/.378/.539 vs .258/.370/.489) is remarkable considering how terribly he started the season.

  117. forensicnucchem says:

So Cervelli catching all of Javy’s starts explains his ‘run support’…

  118. CaptainRaf says:

this personal catcher stuff (if true) is pretty annoying

  119. JobaWockeeZ says:

Well at least Teix is coming back up to do stuff. Dare we say a Red Sox killer?

  120. candyforstalin says:

87 mph fb. the yankees front office misjudged the strenght of their starting pitching staff.

  121. ZZ says:

It is amazing right now the Red Sox have only scored 4 runs.

Javy has either hung a breaking pitch or had a fastball tail to the hear of the plate to about every batter so far.

He is really living on borrowed time right now.

This is the type of game where it is probably best to take your pitcher out an inning too early instead of an inning too late.

  122. cano-is-the-bro says:

Javy isn’t looking sharp at all tonight but i also feel like part of the blame should be put on the way cervelli is calling the game. Maybe thats just the fact that i’m disliking cervelli’s contribution to the team more and more as the season goes on.

oh and how about cervelli’s stellar defense? He catches that pop-up and we’re still up 2-1 and Javy’s pitch count is way lower.

tex is such a stud. making plays on both sides of the ball

  123. forensicnucchem says:

70 pitches for Javy, 41 for Buchholz. Yuck…

  124. JobaWockeeZ says:

Ellsbury decides to actually cover decent ground now?

  125. Mike Axisa says:

Good trivia. Omar Vizquel? Might be Red Sox related though.

  126. Carlosologist says:

    Answer: Pudge.

  127. iYankee(next generation from Apple) says:

Buchholz looks like Danny Noonan with that haircut….. looks like he has gopher grime growing on his chin.

  128. UncleArgyle says:

    A-Rod?

  129. iYankee(next generation from Apple) says:

Two back to back innings by javy… Ok offense, make Clay Aiken work a little and tie this mother fucker up.

  130. Frigidevil says:

OK I get that he could’ve done much worse, but to say ‘just his 80th pitch’ in the 4th inning is just wrong.

  131. All Star Carl says:

Cano must have loved that rest.

  132. Carlosologist says:

People always talk about Pudge being a shoe-in for the HOF, but I just looked, and he has a career OBP of .335. If that makes a player HOF-worthy, Jorge should be getting a plaque too (.378 OBP).

    • Pudge’s catcher defense >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
      >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
      >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
      >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
      >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
      >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Jorge’s catcher defense

      • Carlosologist says:

I see your point, but Posada should be in solely because of his bat. He’s the second greatest offensive catcher of his generation.

        • I’m not going to try and talk you out of Jorge being hall-worthy, because he’s definitely in in my opinion.

I’m just saying, I get why Pudge is a “shoo-in”. .298/.335/.468 might not be mind-bottling, but it’s still well above average, and Pudge was probably the greatest defensive catcher ever and played constantly.

The man has 10,000 plate appearances at catcher.

          Ten thousand.

          • Carlosologist says:

OK, I see it your way. I was never saying that Pudge shouldn’t be in the HOF. I was just pointing out that he wasn’t great with the bat. But then I thought and realized that most catchers aren’t good with the bat. So while Pudge’s batting line is unimpressive compared to other HOFs at other positions, it’ll be very good compared to his catching counterparts. He’s also played great and consistent defense for close to 20 seasons, so he’s got that going for him.

          • bexarama says:

I’m also willing to guess several way below average years once Pudge was waaaay past his peak brought down his overall numbers. Not that they shouldn’t count, but at his peak he was one of the best offensive catchers of all time + elite defense.

    • Mariano's Pimp Hand says:

Pudge’s >300 HRs plays into it too. Very few catchers have hit more than 300 HRs.

  133. Michael Kay: “Pudge is having a pretty good year.”

    No, Michael, he’s not.

    Pudge since May 1: .219/.239/.300

  134. Bryan says:

C’mon Lance. Big hit right here.

  135. swisher's fauxhawk says:

    Sick flip by Scutaro.

  136. iYankee(next generation from Apple) says:

    hahahahahahahahahahaha

that is what you get for hitting a HR off of Mariano… he put the Santoria on you…

  137. ZZ says:

Berkman really stands far off the plate batting LH.

  138. Cecala says:

Scutero really wanted that Web Gem

  139. forensicnucchem says:

Well, that couldn’t have gone much worse Granderson…

  140. JobaWockeeZ says:

But the Red Sox can recover from their errors.

  141. camilo gerardo says:

    don’t like lance’s cut

  142. All Star Carl says:

    Oh Yankees.

  143. I woulda just plowed into him if I was Berk.

Jump into the rivalry headfirst, baby. Start a bench-clearing brawl.

  144. Mike Axisa says:

Time for you to atone for your mistake, Frankie.

  145. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Can Cervelli redeem himself?

  146. Humdinger says:

Fat ass Elvis has gotta slide there.

  147. Mike Axisa says:

That was Grandy’s first GIDP of the season. He had one all of last year as well.

  148. JobaWockeeZ says:

When will Cervelli get tagged nothing more than a backup catcher?

  149. UncleArgyle says:

He may have been “Fat Elvis” in Houston, but he’s “Dead Elvis” in the Bronx. Berkman has looked terrible since coming over

  150. Frigidevil says:

How awesome would it be if Cano stole home? NOBODY would see it coming!
    /thingsthatwouldneverhappen

  151. Bryan says:

Fucking horrible as swing Cervelli. Fuck.

  152. UncleArgyle says:

    Paging Chad Moeller

  153. Slappy White says:

Does Jesus get a September call up ? Does he start next year in the Bronx ?

  154. JLew says:

Paging Jeff Mathis, paging Jeff Mathis.

  155. JLew says:

I guess that is a reply to Uncle Argyle

  156. Mike Axisa says:

Adrian Beltre just got effed in the a.

  157. All Star Carl says:

wow that was a nasty sequence.

  158. forensicnucchem says:

    hahaha

  159. bexarama says:

Javy has no fastball tonight so he’s bustin’ out the eephus.

  160. Carlosologist says:

Beltre is trying to hit the letters.

  161. 28 in '10 says:

Heh, thought I’d check on some Red Sox prospects and I came across this: http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....pid=518490

  162. Bryan says:

Where the jumpers at now? That’s our Javy.

  163. rek4gehrig says:

Beltre is gonna bust his knee cap if he keeps doing that

  164. Frigidevil says:

Damn that’s me at the park today. BTW home run derby with friends at a little league field is AWESOME.

  165. Brian in NH says:

    *sigh*

dislike being down 4-2 to Boston

  166. More on Pudge:

He’s sucked for six solid years now (.276/.302/.411 86+ since 2005). But if he can stick around for two more years, not only can he flirt with 3,000 hits, but he can also join Gary Sheffield, Rusty Staub, and Ty Cobb as the only players in baseball history to hit a homer as a teenager and as a 40-year old.

Oh, and he’s also the active leader in doubles.

  167. Meat Loaf says:

    This game is kinda blah.

Also, ManBan has 11K through 6. Me like.

  168. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Are you serious Kay?

  169. JobaWockeeZ says:

I’ll take the HBP over the 66 percent chance of a grounder.

  170. Carlosologist says:

    OH SHIT Jeter got plunked.

  171. Chris says:

Is Montero eligible for the Rule 5 draft this year?

  172. All Star Carl says:

Jeter probably would have grounded out. Thanks Clay.

  173. Troll says:

V-Mart’s glove didn’t even move to the inside part to try to catch that. I’m just saying.

  174. JobaWockeeZ says:

Yes it’s Teix up. The hottest hitter on the team.

  175. Bryan says:

    Here we go Mark Tex.

  176. Carlosologist says:

Now Tex smokes something into the gap or into the second deck.

  177. ZZ says:

I really have to hand it Javy. I thought he was absolutely cooked tonight from the first inning.

But he has gone out there now and he is just outsmarting the Red Sox hitters. His stuff is awful tonight and the past couple innings Javy has just found ways to fool them.

Being able to add and subtract on your pitches like Javy is doing right now is no small feat.

  178. Mike Axisa says:

Dammit Tex. You’re off the team.

    /kidding

  179. All Star Carl says:

    Why swing Tex why?

  180. JobaWockeeZ says:

Shit. Alright calling an A-Bomb here.

  181. forensicnucchem says:

Ugh, another terrible missed opportunity (so far). And on the first pitch again too…

  182. All Star Carl says:

    I love A-Rod

  183. Carlosologist says:

    A-Rod in the clutch!

  184. Kulish says:

    Psh. Stat padder.

  185. Bryan says:

Oh shit, Buchholz not happy. He’s goin’ for the laptops.

  186. UncleArgyle says:

It does say something that in ARod’s worst year as a professional he might lead the league in RBI

  187. Carlosologist says:

    Robbie why?

  188. JobaWockeeZ says:

Just get to the shitty Sox bullpen.

  189. Troll says:

I can’t shake this lingering feeling of Cervelli hatred, must have been something I ate…

  190. Cnight_UP says:

Word has it that SUNY Cortland Alum, and inventor of Mr. Socko, Mick (Mankind, Dude Love, Cactus Jack) Foley is in the house tonight…

  191. Bryan says:

That’s a pretty big fucking blow.

  192. All Star Carl says:

Are you kidding me Javy. You had a change to redeem yourself then you choke just like that.

  193. BigBlueAL says:

Just as I was about to praise Javy for his start tonight…..

  194. j_Yankees says:

    Blame that one on Cervelli.

  195. ShuutoHeat (GGBG > Crawford) says:

I come home and this scrub named Kalish hits a HR?

  196. Carlosologist says:

Well, you really can’t be pissed. First HR for the guy.

  197. Mr. Sparkle says:

The offense giveth…Javy taketh away. He stinks. Can’t pitch to any team with a winning record.

  198. Kulish says:

    I hate baseball.

  199. forensicnucchem says:

Well, that’s a big blow to the comeback chances.

At some point, you almost have to wonder just how much success such a homer prone pitcher can have in the AL East in this era…

    • Mr. Sparkle says:

Especially one who looks like he’s pitching scared most of the time.

      • Pasqua says:

What does that mean, exactly? Did he cower behind the mound after every pitch? Did he visibly mouth “Oh…no! No!” while watching each Sox hitter walk to the plate?

He didn’t execute his pitches in a high profile game. Criticize him for that, but the baseball cliches just don’t cut it.

By the way, I love your floor wax.

  200. All Star Carl says:

Why would you start him off with a change up?

  201. You know what the biggest problem with this Davidson fair/foul controversy is?

Davidson doesn’t know. He’s guesstimating. There’s no way for Bob Davidson to actually be able to see precisely that the ball passed over the imaginary line above third base to the left or to the right of the imaginary line between the foul pole and home plate.

It’s just an educated guess, but he’s digging in his heels as if he’s 1,000% certain that he eyeballed that intersection of ball and imaginary grid totally perfectly.

You’re guessing, Bob. Just admit it.

    • Chris says:

In his defense, you can’t tell on the replays either.

This is a ridiculous call to use if you’re trying to justify replay. It’s a 50/50 play and unless you have a camera positioned directly over 3B you’re not going to see it.

  202. Mike Axisa says:

He’s gassed, take him. Time to boo.

  203. Bryan says:

Please, please, please keep it 6-3 Joba.

  204. swisher's fauxhawk says:

    Mountain Dew or Crab Juice?

  205. BigBlueAL says:

Javy must think Lowrie is Ted Williams with the way he has pitched to him tonight.

  206. Jake H says:

I think they should sent Cervelli down. His defense is the reason he is up and he has been terrible in that department. Some super boneheaded plays lately.

    • Mr. Sparkle says:

I like Cervelli, but I agree. This team needs offense…not defense anyway. If he’s not hitting, he’s easily replaceable. Why not Montero?

      • Jake H says:

Montero is in a great grove that I wouldn’t want to break that up if he struggles in the bigs. I would rather him get all the at bats in the minors. Chad Moeller can do just as good of a job as Cervelli offensively and I trust him more defensively right now.

        • j_Yankees says:

not sure i understand that logic.

Rather call a guy up when he’s seeing the ball well then when’s playing like crap. I mean if i can’t call up a guy when he’s hot then some of these guys might never get to the big leagues.

        • Mr. Sparkle says:

How many at-bats does Cervelli get? Montero will get plenty of PT. Other teams aren’t afraid to promote guys that are performing in the minors, there’s no reason the Yankees have to coddle him. After all, look how that’s worked for Chamberlain.

      • Because it would derail his development plan and he’d probably be just as bad offensively and even worse defensively.

Montero’s a hitting beast, but you’ve got to expect that he’d struggle during his first taste of the league.

        Not yet.

        • Reggie C. says:

Promoting Montero in the midst of this August schedule is a recipe for disaster. Rangers, RS, and Rays pitching would make an over-eager-to-impress Montero look absolutely silly.

          • Mr. Sparkle says:

Sticking with two catchers, a centerfielder, and usually about 4 other Yankees at the same time in the lineup who are not hitting are a recipe for disaster. Tell me. When this lead became 6-3, did anyone think this team was coming back? Why not? No offense. If not now, when? Will there ever be a time Montero WON’T be eager to impress? Not bringing him up because of that is outright foolishness.

Seriously, some of the people on this board think the guy is made out of glass.

        • Mr. Sparkle says:

I think it’s foolish. The Yankees have no offense from the catcher slot (and most other slots.) Coddling rookies does nothing. All the people who comment here would practically marry the guy. Then, when the Yankees have a pressing need he can fill and will get plenty of playing time, everyone’s afraid to pull the trigger. BS. Put your money where your mouth is gang.

We couldn’t trade him to improve the team, so why not actually use him to try to improve the team on the field. I doubt any of you wanted to keep going with Tony Womack in 2005, arguing we had to let Cano continue to develop. The experience is different, but the progression in the minors is similar.

    • Send him down for whom, though? It’s too soon for Montero, even more premature for Romine, and Moeller/Pilitere/etc. would actually be downgrades from Cervelli, as impossible as that sounds.

  207. ZZ says:

As a follow up to my previous comment. I guess you can only outsmart major league hitters the way he was doing in the 4th and 5th inning with no fastball for so long.

Like I said before, and inning too early instead of an inning too late was the way to go with Javy tonight.

  208. All Star Carl says:

Manny Banuelos was on beast mode today.

  209. Troll says:

Thanks Javy, now I’m stuck watching Men in Black on a Friday night with a bunch of cold beer that I was planning on drinking triumphantly.

  210. James A says:

Hey, Chan Ho Park is pitching for Pittsburgh

  211. baby carlos says:

Well there is your ballgame. Offense has got to do more foreplay.

  212. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Nice seeing Joba settling in.

  213. Humdinger says:

Maybe Joba will drill Ortiz next inning.

  214. Jake H says:

can Lance Berkman hit it out of the infield?

  215. forensicnucchem says:

Wow, Berkman just looks terrible out there.

  216. UncleArgyle says:

I hope Dead Elvis dies on the toilet seat tonite

  217. Ace says:

I don’t know who frustrates me more. Granderson or Berkman. Frustrating game all around. Let’s hope they have one more rally left in them once that bullpen comes in.

  218. JobaWockeeZ says:

Granderson hasn’t gotten on track this year? Yeah when you only mention the 0 for 4′s then that tends to happen. Dick.

  219. All Star Carl says:

The bottom of our Order is horrible.

  220. Mark says:

I actually don’t mind the low pitch count for laptops right now, top of the order has done pretty well vs him tonight, time to take advantage next inning.

  221. Reggie C. says:

Buchholz is a damn good pitcher. This kid’s got the goods. Or maybe he’s got it stashed.

Hopefully Hughes is watching how Buchholz is working this lineup.

  222. forensicnucchem says:

    Granderson vs. Buchholz: 0-8, 4 K’s, 4 groundouts

With that changeup, it’s almost like he’s a lefty against him…

    • Troll says:

On an unrelated topic, everytime I see your name I think Duke Nukem, which makes me think of Wolfenstein, which makes me say to myself “Guten Tag!”. So thanks for that.

      /somethingtosmileabout

  223. All Star Carl says:

    Man wood has no command.

  224. ShuutoHeat (GGBG > Crawford) says:

Man, I thought Swish had that…

  225. j_Yankees says:

Well atleast he got to the ball.

    /UZR’d

  226. forensicnucchem says:

I’d love to know how that’s a hit.

  227. UncleArgyle says:

For some reason I’m in the mood to watch the Bad New Bears….or the Spring Training montage in Major League…

  228. All Star Carl says:

    Rally Yanks rally!

  229. Mike Axisa says:

Remember when Brett Gardner was dunking singles all over the place? That was fun while it lasted.

    • Carlosologist says:

At least we know what he can do with about a full season’s worth of PA (666 PA combined between this and last season): .281/.370/.386/.756 with a 106 OPS+ and 56 SB. That’s leadoff hitter worthy.

  230. Reggie C. says:

WHY the fuck did Dj swing at that pitch?

  231. Mr. Sparkle says:

By the way…I’m forced to listen to the Radio broadcast tonight (and most Fridays.) Is there anything worse than listening to a Suzyn Waldman broadcast when they’re playing the Sox? Every player is a hall-of-famer. Every fielding play is a sparkler. I’m not saying we need homers, but do we really have to listen to our own broadcaster drool all over our primary rival?

  232. j_Yankees says:

I’ll ease off on the Jeter bashing…but he needs to stop hitting that weak shit to the SS. Cause its getting old..

  233. Mr. Sparkle says:

Now Suzyn’s getting all excited about the fact that the Red Sox will only be 4-1/2 behind Tampa after tonight. Where’s Donald Trump when you need him…as in “You’re fired!”

  234. j_Yankees says:

    Blue Jays win. Rays lose.

  235. BigBlueAL says:

The only thing that could make tonight worse is the Yankees hiring Isiah Thomas as a consultant.

  236. iYankee(next generation from Apple) says:

The only thing that bothers me about losses like this (assuming they do not come back) is that all you hear are those cliche bullshit lines “tip you cap”, “we need to get it done”.

How about just following the Nike slogan and “Just do it”.

  237. All Star Carl says:

Got to take one for the team Tex daaamn

  238. Reggie C. says:

Buchholz overthrew that FB badly. He’s tiring perhaps?

  239. All Star Carl says:

    Too close to take Tex.

  240. YanksFan77 says:

It’s gotta worry some of you that the only Yankee hitting above .300 is Cano.

  241. Slappy White says:

    strike 3 a little sketchy

  242. All Star Carl says:

Joe Girardi always trying to make someone a two inning guy.

  243. UncleArgyle says:

    When we re-hire Joe Torre?

    • Carlosologist says:

I would make a joke about your seriousness right now, but I’m pretty sure you’re serious about all the stuff you’ve said tonight.

  244. Slappy White says:

Is Lowell in his 50s ?

  245. BigBlueAL says:

    Frankie Piliere just tweeted this:

Scouted Brackman tonight. 92-96 w/ 2-sm life. CB and CH looked very good but lack of aggressiveness w/ FB hurts him.

  246. Mark says:

So if Aceves comes through next week looking good enough to be activated who goes Gaudin or Mitre? Can’t imagine Yanks sending down Logan and having no lefty in the pen right?
