Game 125: SuperNova

By

You're not in Trenton anymore, Ivan. (Photo Credit: Flickr user Russ Glasson)

Hopefully the Yankees enjoy the Blue Jays’ company, because tonight marks the first of nine games the two will play during the final 38 games of the Yanks’ season. That’s a touch less than one out of every four games going forward. The Jays come into this one losers in four of their last five even though they outscored their opponents 26-23 during that stretch. That’s what a 16-2 win will do for you.

On the bump for the Yanks will be Ivan Nova, who is making his first career big league start as you already know. With any luck, the Jays will experience the same “helpless against a pitcher they’ve never seen before” phenomenon that plagues the Yanks. Toronto will counter with Brandon Morrow, who hopefully will be in 5.1 IP, 5 R mode and not 7 IP, 2 R mode. At least he doesn’t feature a great changeup, like basically everyone else on their staff.

Here’s the starting nine…

Gardner, LF
Swisher, RF
Teixeira, 1B
Cano, 2B
Posada, DH
Granderson, CF
Nunez, SS – why is he at short and Pena at third? that’s backwards, defensively
Pena, 3B
Cervelli, C

First pitch is scheduled for a little after 7pm ET tonight, and it can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

    thats some lineup we got

  2. I know things may go badly, but it’s still very exciting to watch a young guy make his MLB debut.

  3. vinny-b says:

    they’re auditioning Nunez at SS

  4. larryf says:

And we have a great gidp option on the bench… a first ballot HoF’er

You see, this is why you can’t use run differential as a meaningful stat because it can be so misleading. Now the Blue Jays can play two more games, where they can win one 10-0 and lose another 2-1. Then their run differential will be +12, but they will have gone 2-5 over that stretch. Clearly, this isn’t an indicator of how good a team really is, like my 1975 Reds.

    /Morgan’d

  6. JGS says:

    And really hopefully, he won’t be in 9 IP, 0 R, 17 K mode

  7. vinny-b says:

edit: with much due respect Mike, the Yankees aren’t nearly as down on Nunez as you are. Case in point: tentative Seattle/Cliff Lee trade. When Seattle wanted Nunez (instead of Adams) to complete the deal, and the Yankees said no – TWICE

  8. ZZ says:

Nunez has very little experience at 3B. Playing him there on astroturf with a groundball pitcher on the mound does not maximize their defense, especially since Pena is a good 3B and Nunez has become a good SS as well.

  9. This was a funny piece from Zell’s.

Someone needs to do the reverse, “Things Yankee fans love”

    • Carlosologist says:

      Pussytubing.

Well, that’s my favorite part of the Yankee fandom experience.

    • I disagree with #16. I don’t hate the Cleveland Indians drum, I hate the entire Cleveland Indians organization, top-to-bottom.

    • Kit says:

I totally laughed at the fact that “Rays fans” is in quotation marks. Epic.

      20. W.B. Mason Commercials

No way. I enjoy most of them, especially the janitors in the YES studio at 3 AM reality show. The choir one grates on me however. Not included were the Joba/Hughes rules and of course midges.

Here’s a list of some things I love
1.Bleacher Creatures doing the roll call
2.The facade back around the grandstand in YS III
      3.Hip Hip Jorge chants
4.Phil Hughes developing into a future ace
5.Robinson Cano becoming a perennial MVP candidate
6.The Yankees finally using their prospects for more then trade bait
7.Alex Rodriguez’s chase for the Home Run record
8.Mark Teixeira’s spectacular gold glove defense at 1B
9.Nick Swisher’s infectious personality, the dude cracks me up
      10.Monument Park
      11. Bob Sheppard introducing Derek Jeter before each AB
12.Mariano Rivera being continuing to be the greatest closer ever in his 40′s

I could think of alot more but what else can you all think of?

  10. Hall and Nokes says:

So what previously mediocre but now suddenly buff Blue Jay is going to hit us up for a pair of taters tonight?

  11. King of the Troglodytes says:

Game 162, Yanks and Sawx tied for the wild card, and up steps Johnny Damon with the sacks juiced and our man, Javy Vazquez on the bump…

  12. 6 IP, 8 H, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 HR, 4 R. That’s what I’m hoping for.

  13. Dela G says:

I have a feeling lyle overbay will strike during this season. This guy destroys the yankees on a regular basis

  14. Everyone said the Yanks fleeced the Braves this off season for Vazquez. But after watching him pitch this year, Melky, Dunn and Arodys Vizcaino having Tommy John sounds about right.

  15. JGS says:

ooh, ManBan makes his AA debut against Kyle Drabek

  16. Jose the Satirist says:

RAB is powered by Ford now?

  17. Domino’s Tracker? If you’re that anal that you need to know where your pizza is in the fifteen-thirty minutes it takes to be delivered, you’ve got problems.

  18. Not sure if this means much, but Nove looks cool as a cucumber on the bench. He’s looking at Cervelli like he’s nuts, so Ivan is obviously thinking clearly.

  19. T-Dubs says:

I’m sure the whole Deadspin financial records have been delved into already somewhere in these threads but I’m just returning from an Axisaesque vacation. Anyone who’s perused care to give me the gist?

  20. Have the Blue Jays ever had a good looking uniform?

    (thinks)

    No, they have not.

  21. Mike Axisa says:

There you go. Let Morrow make his own mess.

  22. Carlosologist says:

At least they’re working the count.

  23. Make it a TTO inning, Tex!

  24. Ross in Jersey says:

Over/Under 7 strikeouts on the day for our 7/8/9 today?

  25. Ross in Jersey says:

Also, chances that, if the Yanks win, headlines are “Yankees win without Jeter” tomorrow: 0%.

  26. Fred Lemond says:

Gonna be a long day if he gets that pitch.

  27. Fred Lemond says:

    Cano is still hot baby!

  28. Mike Axisa says:

    Fuckin’ Robbie. What a stud.

  29. Ross in Jersey says:

Okay Robbie, you can be MVP.

  30. Wil Nieves #1 Fan says:

    Fuck. Yes.

  31. Carlosologist says:

This Cano guy is good at baseball.

  32. Slappy White says:

    Beautiful slide by Swish

  33. Pat D says:

    Yay for early leads.

  34. Fred Lemond says:

    Oh Posada.

  35. Mike Axisa says:

Oh Georgie, you gotta swing at that 3-1 pitch.

  36. Ross in Jersey says:

Bah, Jorge… at least you saw a lot of pitches.

  37. Bet. Now Nova can win with a CGSHO, 1-0.

    /ballsy’d

  38. MikeD says:

On pace for nine runs and a MLB-setting record of 27 strike outs.

  39. Wil Nieves #1 Fan says:

3-1 Fastball down the middle wasn’t good enough I guess.

  40. CS Yankee says:

He can K the side every inning as long as we get a run first.

  41. Carlosologist says:

I can’t believe Seattle just gave Morrow away for a middle reliever.

  42. Slappy White says:

Ballsy move by Nova , wearing Ron Villone’s old number

  43. Wil Nieves #1 Fan says:

#47? Who does Nova think he is, Erick Almonte!?!?!

  44. Fred Lemond says:

93-94 so far. Needs to get that down though.

  45. Pastadivingnunez!

Wanted to be the first to break that one in.

  46. Ross in Jersey says:

This is what we call not a good start.

  47. Jose the Satirist says:

    I didn’t realize Morrow has a 10.5 K/9 this season. Impressive.

  48. Wil Nieves #1 Fan says:

    So far so good.

  49. Kit says:

C’mon, Nova. You make me nervous, but I’m sure you can do it (maybe).

  50. Carlosologist says:

Three pitches in and there’s already a jam? Goddamn.

  51. Fred Lemond says:

    Uh oh!

  52. Accent Shallow says:

    This is an inauspicious beginning.

  53. Mike Axisa says:

Get your grounder Ivan, that’s all you have to worry about.

  54. Well this is not going as desired.

  55. cjc says:

no of course Cito’s not surprised who doesn’t double their HR totatls year to year jeez

  56. Ross in Jersey says:

    Get well soon, Andy.

  57. j_Yankees says:

hmmm…not really how we wanted this one to start.

  58. bexarama says:

Uh oh. CAN’T HANDLE TEH BIG STAGE!!!!!!

  59. Fred Lemond says:

    Come on Nova!

  60. MikeD says:

Perfect. A triple play in his first start.

    Positive thinking.

  61. Slappy White says:

    1-2-3 DP…please

  62. Guest says:

Whose the best comparison for Jose Bautista in terms of ridiculous imporvement in HR production? Brady Anderson?

  63. j_Yankees says:

    Triple play here…

  64. T-Dubs says:

wow, he is jazzzzed up. Get through this one and hopefully he’ll settle down.

  65. Now way is he throwing 96.

  66. Guest says:

    This is not going well.

  67. Kit says:

C’mon, Nova. Shake off the jitters.

  68. Jose the Satirist says:

    He hit 97.

    /silver lining

  69. Mike Axisa says:

    OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH baby!!!

    /Sam Rosen’d

  70. Ross in Jersey says:

Wow. Perfect throw. That’s the way to pick up your pitcher.

  71. Fred Lemond says:

    BG BABY!!!

  72. Hughesus Christo says:

    GGBG’d

  73. cjc says:

    see Ivan DP no issue

  74. You do NOT run on Brett!

  75. Carlosologist says:

    Gardner has a laser!

  76. Slappy White says:

Thank you Mr 3rd Base Coach

  77. Wil Nieves #1 Fan says:

    Fuck yeah!!!!

  78. GUNNED DOWN BY THE PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT MAN!!!

  79. Coach6423 says:

Brett Gardner may not have the strongest arm, but he is infinitely more accurate than Melky…

  80. Cy Pettitte says:

when will these fools learn? BG has a cannon

  81. Guest says:

If you are looking for someone who will lead the league in outfield assists, look for a left fielder with a decent arm. People always run on these guys when they shouldn’t.

  82. But that guy said you’re not supposed to put the ball in the glove when you tag the runner. Cervelli did it wrong!

  83. Pat D says:

    Non-traditional DP’s. Gotta love ‘em.

  84. j_Yankees says:

Cervelli trying to pump him up. Gotta love TEH ENERGY!

  85. Ross in Jersey says:

So this gun is totally broken right? I don’t see how Nova is throwing 96-97 lol

  86. Fred Lemond says:

    wow 98.

  87. MikeD says:

Can these radar gun readings be right? I’ve never heard it mentioned he throws 98.

  88. cjc says:

    a bit juiced up here

  89. Cy Pettitte says:

is the gun hot? I thought he was mid to low 90′s

  90. Joe says:

that is how you properly block the plate and position the ball for who ever said yesterday that posada was correct and his “coaches” taught him to fake the ball in the glove.

  91. Coach6423 says:

haha, Singleton still cant say Shin SOO Choo

  92. Guest says:

Mike, is the gun off? I don’t remember hearing anywhere that Nova touches 9& MPH.

  93. cjc says:

me thinks that there was a mix up

  94. Carlosologist says:

Cervelli just took a shot to the nuts. Ow.

  95. Nice recovery, Ivan.

  96. JM says:

    Foooor threeeee! Ivan… NOVA!

  97. Cy Pettitte says:

Nova! way to finish off the inning

  98. kelly says:

    could’ve been alot worst….thank u gardyy

  99. RickestRoss says:

He did not throw one good pitch that whole inning. we must pray

  100. JGS says:

Nova only threw 16 pitches that inning

  101. cjc says:

well it wasn’t pretty but hopefully he breathes deep and just throws from here on out

  102. Fred Lemond says:

lol @ not having CC on the Text Poll

  103. No love for Lee, in the text poll.

  104. T-Dubs says:

    Run Curtis, Run!

  105. Seriously, no Cliff Lee in the text poll? Yes, I know he’s had a bad couple of outings; he still leads the league in K/9 by a wide, wide margin and is best in IP/S.

  106. JM says:

Michael Kay is allergic to road games I suppose.

  107. T-Dubs says:

    via Twitter:
    FrankiePiliere

Scouted Nova a bunch in the minors and never saw him throw that hard. Consistent 97-98? Amped up or not…impressive

  108. Kiersten says:

They had Clay Buchholz in that text poll and not Cliff Lee.

    …did I miss something?

  109. Hughesus Christo says:

Morrow has to be Top 5 of guys you don’t to get plunked by.

  110. mustang says:

I though Nova was a soft ground ball type even if the gun is off by 3 mph 95 mph is not soft.

  111. j_Yankees says:

Cliff Lee not in the text poll? Explain please YES.

  112. T-Dubs says:

    Axisa was right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11`!!

  113. Cy Pettitte says:

if you play SS you must hit into 6-4-3 GIDPs, it’s a rule

  114. Ross in Jersey says:

Nunez admirably representing Jeter in the lineup tonight.

  115. cjc says:

is it me or had he just crushed the ball into outs and blooped his hits? What a strange game

  116. Pat D says:

    Nunez doing his Jeter.

  117. Hughesus Christo says:

Nunez is a fast learner. Already looking like the heir apparent.

  118. Ross in Jersey says:

Pena’s hitting .667 off Morrow, why isn’t he IBBing him?!!

  119. ThrillHouseMD says:

Pena! At least we clear the pitchers spot now.

  120. Accent Shallow says:

Jeez, maybe Pena does have Morrow’s number.

/he’s like a shittier hitting Enrique Wilson

  121. Ross in Jersey says:

    Moeller couldn’t have done that.

  122. cjc says:

thats a great job by the lineup clearing the pitcher 3 times in 1 inning

  123. kelly says:

    cervelli’s at-bats r really frustrating to watch

  124. Guest says:

    Over-under on Cervelli at-bats in 2010: 125?

  125. Wow says:

Dang that bottom third is nasty. we have to do better than that.

  126. Wil Nieves #1 Fan says:

Newton’s Law: Cervelli cannot exert a force Major League enough to put the ball over the outfield wall. Fact.

  127. I’ve got a sinking feeling we’re going to see way too many 2-0 counts tonight from young Mr. Ivanova.

  128. Jerome S says:

When Frankie hits one high, I know it’s never far. And I cry a bit inside…

  129. Mike Axisa says:

    PastadivingNunez. (again)

  130. cjc says:

    overbay of course

  131. Mike Axisa says:

    Nice rebound inning by Nova.

  132. Ross in Jersey says:

Much better inning. As long as he’s keeping it on the ground we’re in good shape.

  133. iYankee(next generation from Apple) says:

So, I like this Nova guy.

  134. MikeD says:

BTW I want the Coke guy to kill the Pepsi guy in this commercial.

  135. Fred Lemond says:

BG needs a new approach at the plate.

  136. larryf says:

BG always takes 2 strikes and flat foots his swinging strike 3. I still like it better than a first pitch groundout to short and one gidp per game.

    /Jeets’d

  137. Guest says:

One thing that leads me to believe that the Nova readings are correct: We all know that Morrow sits around 94-96, and that’s where he’s been. So if the gun is right for Morrow, then you would expect it to be right for Nova.

Take away: Nova is pumped up right now.

  138. Wil Nieves #1 Fan says:

    BETEMIT!!!

    • UncleArgyle says:

This Brandon Marrow is pretty decent. I bet you could get a 30 year old middle reliever for this guy if you looked around hard enough

  139. T-Dubs says:

Do the Tampa Yankees have a beat writer?

  140. Fred Lemond says:

Come on Cano! Do it again!

  141. Carlosologist says:

    ahahahahaha Tex tripled.

  142. Come on Flash, get excited. Not as ridiculous as Michael Kay, but ya gotta give us just a little bit more.

  143. bexarama says:

A-Rod isn’t as good as that 3B playing RF out there.

  144. Wil Nieves #1 Fan says:

Bautista never bobbled the ball. Mark is just crazy fast.

  145. Wil Nieves #1 Fan says:

    Cito Flabber Gaston.

  146. j_Yankees says:

    That was…NOT(!!)…a good play Bautista.

    /Borat’d

  147. Ross in Jersey says:

    55 pitches through 3, I’ll take it.

  148. Jose the Satirist says:

Gardner’s zone swing percent is 44.6. How can that possibly be that low? I’m impressed.

  149. It’s really too bad the Jays didn’t let Morrow stay where he belonged in the bullpen.

  150. Carlosologist says:

Six Ks through 3? Damn, my MLB 10 The Show pitcher does that by the second.

  151. Mike Axisa says:

That slider in on lefties is pretty ridiculous. I have no idea how the hell you’re supposed to get a bat on that thing.

  152. bexarama says:

Morrow is so fucking filthy. Stop that shit. At least he’s thrown a lot of pitches.

  153. Ross in Jersey says:

2nd time through the order, big test for any rook.

  154. T-Dubs says:

Mo Damn, Tex is so good.

  155. Ross in Jersey says:

    Robots please. Fucking insane.

  156. Cy Pettitte says:

boo that shit, Tex stayed on

  157. Kiersten says:

    OUT.

    robot umps please.

  158. Tom Zig says:

    robotumps

  159. Kit says:

Ugh. I hate umpires. So much.

  160. Carlosologist says:

Tex got fired up. He probably crushes a fastball in his next AB.

  161. Kiersten says:

Have we played Chicago yet this year?

  162. larryf says:

Surprised Joe got up for that vehement and passionate support of tex….

  163. Cy Pettitte says:

Girardi would have to take a few CC fastballs to the head in order to decide to leave the yankees for the cubs

  164. Ross in Jersey says:

Of course. Umpires 2, Yankees 1.

  165. Jake H says:

Why throw hanging curves to that guy?

  166. Kevin in Delectable Princeton says:

Should have been a solo shot, but nothing the Yankees can’t come back from.

  167. Why is he getting any pitch that’s middle and/or in? Just bounce it in the other batter’s box.

  168. Carlosologist says:

Look at that, Bautista’s 39th homer on the 39th pitch from Nova.

  169. Damn this crazy fucker Bautista and his insane unsustainable hot streak.

  170. MikeD says:

Is that like his 39th HR against the Yankees this year?

    Anyone believe that he’s clean? I don’t.

    /angry

      • MikeD says:

        Shrug back.

There are other UFO seasons. Boggs ’87, Campaneris ’70, Cash ’61 (less for the HRs than the overall hitting), Anderson ’96. They’ve been part of the game since there was a game, although we remember the extreme cases because they are extreme, and they are pretty rare. Some times there’s a clear answer looking back (expansion ’61, PEDs ’96), some cases not. We now live in a time where any sudden increase in hitting, especially on the HR side, will draw questions, and it is okay to consider PEDs as an option. In fact, to not consider it is a head-in-the-sand approach that allowed PEDs to go unchecked for so long.

        It’s with us forever.

  171. He’s been hanging that sucker all night. Someone was going to kill it.

  172. bexarama says:

Umps 2, Yankees 1. Whatever, it’s not insurmountable.

  173. cjc says:

well that cost us a run so awesome

  174. Kiersten says:

So I still don’t fully understand waivers. Since the Red Sox claimed Damon, unless the Tigers pull him back, the Sox have to take him right?

  175. Slappy White says:

Should be 1-1 at worst. Fuckin non-robot me-hating ump

  176. Yo, Eduardo, stop bouncing the throws.

  177. Pat D says:

Had to predict taht, didn’t ya, bex?

  178. Jake H says:

    Nunez has a cannon.

  179. Ross in Jersey says:

Keep stylin all the way to the golf course in October, Jose. Classless.

  180. bonestock94 says:

39 homeruns wow. I wonder if we’ll ever see another season like that out of him.

  181. j_Yankees says:

When did Manny get traded to the Blue Jays.

/act like you’ve hit a HR before you jackass. It’s a fucking rookie pitching.

  182. Meat Loaf says:

    I. Hate. Flash. So. Much.

  183. James A says:

Can we just officially all agree that Bautista is cheating?
It’s ridiculous the number of homers/distance/swagger he has compared to what he was before

and hes coming up with Mark McGwire mechanics excuse

  184. larryf says:

87mph change for strikes from Nova is nice. less pitches than Morrow-not terrible by any means so far

  185. Accent Shallow says:

Jose Bautista leading the league in homers personally offends me.

  186. Wow says:

Friggin’ robbed. It’s a reason they play and officiate in America’s cap (Canada).

    Conclusion, robot umpires. Forget replay.

  187. JGS says:

Via @riddering–If this was the little league World Series, the umpires could have reviewed that call at first.

  188. cjc says:

so he has more than found it great just great

  189. Why are there no Indy Car drivers in an ad for the IZOD Indy Car Series?

    #thatdoesn’tmakesense

  190. China Joe says:

Of all the nights for the umps to cost the Yankees a run…not insurmountable, but they’ve got their F- lineup out there tonight

  191. Carlosologist says:

This iO commercial is Ron Dibble bait.

  192. larryf says:

Seattle up 1-0 over Gomer Pyle Lackey in the 5th

    • UncleArgyle says:

Jed Lowrie made an error on the scoring play and Lackey threw his hands up and yelled something at him. I guess when you have a 5 ERA and make 20 mil a year you can do those things. Its why he’s such a competitor and bulldog.

  193. Jake H says:

How about no more rolling curves.

  194. Fred Lemond says:

Good fastball Good change. Needs to work on the curve.

  195. cjc says:

not to dwell but they should dust Bautista his next AB I know they won’t but they should

  196. Kit says:

Does Overbay seriously have “Jeremy” by Pearl Jam as their at bat song? What the hell is wrong with you?

  197. larryf says:

Nova’s changeup about same speed as javy’s fb. Throws it 3-1-impressive.

  198. Ross in Jersey says:

    Less curves, more changes!

  199. Mike Axisa says:

Nice changeups in hitter’s counts for the strikeout.

  200. mustang says:

    nice!
    change!

  201. BadaBling says:

Score: Yanks 1, Jays 1, Umps 1. Advantage Jays. Cmon Meals, let’s get some boarderline ball calls!

Amazing. How can the Little League get it right when MLB clearly values degenertive old man eyes as opposed to getting the call right replay. I’m still fired up over that!

  202. Nice sequence to end that AB against Overbay.

  203. Not Tank the Frank says:

Nova has a lot of weapons. Different ballgame if he had a feel for the curveball tonight. I also didn’t expect this kind of velocity. You might not need all that much deception if you can get it up to 97.

The only bad thing is he has no deception. He could be a #5 starter for quite a few AL teams and almost a #4 on all NL teams. Hopefully, Nova goes out and shows some good stuff and good results.

  204. I must admit, Derek looks youthful and athletic sitting on the bench. When he’s in the field or at the plate, he looks old and slow.

    • MikeD says:

That’s because in the regular world, which includes sitting in the dugout, he is a young and athletic man. When he’s out in the field, he’s a 36-year-old shortstop.

  205. Mike Axisa says:

Robbie: Stay the hell away Eduardo, I’ve seen what happens when you try to throw the ball to first.

  206. RalphieD says:

im likeing nova…hes come far since not even being good rule 5 material

  207. BigBlueAL says:

The Rogers Centre didnt put out their “A” lineup tonight either judging by the waitresses they have working behind home plate tonight.

  208. Greg says:

I seriously believe that the Yankees need another hitter.
I don’t know if it’s Manny or not. But with all the injuries and the inability of our rookies to hit like the Red Sox rookies, I just feel insecure

  209. Ross in Jersey says:

Jed Lowrie, the only good thing about the 2010 Red Sox.

    /PeteAbe’d

  210. Slappy White says:

Who would be Cano’s competition for the Gold Glove ? Unless, of course, they give it to Pedroia for his ground balls in chair technique

  211. BadaBling says:

Let’s go bottom turd of the lineup!

  212. Mike Axisa says:

Nice at-bat by Pena, regardless of outcome.

  213. With a vet batting, that pitch to Pena is probably called a ball.

  214. James A says:

Morrow has a ridiculous slider this year, I seem to remember his fastball being much better when he came up in Seattle

  215. mbonzo says:

I don’t remember Molina moving the glove so much after a catch while on the Yankees.

  216. Joe says:

since when does cervelli wear batting gloves?

  217. larryf says:

Jays have a great staff, great power. Why are they in 4th place?

  218. cjc says:

    what AJ should be

    • Guest says:

Actually, this is what AJ was against us when he was a Jay. One of the reasons we gave him so much money.

    • Not Tank the Frank says:

I was thinking more like Joba. Mid-90′s fastball, strikeout slider. Although Morrow’s pure stuff is better than Joba’s.

  219. Guest says:

At least he had to use 13 pitches for his strikeouts.

  220. Carlosologist says:

    Yeesh, nine strikeouts through five.

  221. RalphieD says:

morrow is what i though joba would be…or should i say was for a period of time

  222. Mike Axisa says:

What the hell was that, Brett.

  223. cjc says:

at least you didn’t strike out

    barf

  224. Ross in Jersey says:

I propose some broadcasting roster moves:

Kenny – full time play by play

Jack Curry – called up to the booth

Flash – optioned to the sidelines

  225. UncleArgyle says:

Nova’s command is pretty spotty, but he sure looks like his ceiling is higher than “back of the rotation”

    • Ross in Jersey says:

Command is what separates MLB-caliber pitchers from everyone else, though.

    • YankeesJunkie says:

No deception and no real put out pitch will keep him from going above a back of the rotation starter, but he is a guy that could keep a job for awhile.

  226. ThrillHouseMD says:

I wonder what Canadian Pizza tastes like.

  227. Ross in Jersey says:

Too many fly balls for Nova, methinks.

  228. mike c says:

N to the izzo V to the izzay

  229. Kit says:

Nicely done, Ivan. Keep it going.

  230. Jake H says:

Nice inning there. Other than the hanger Nova has done pretty well.

  231. mustang says:

if that’s what his good curve-ball looks like I’m in love.

  232. Slappy White says:

Nova’s doin a great job. We need to get this kid a win somehow

  233. Really found the feel for the curve now.

65 pitches through 5, let him go 7 and/or 100 and call it a night. Nice job so far.

  234. Slappy White says:

I loved the way the grounds crew haule ass off the field when the argument was goin on…..hilarious

  235. Ross in Jersey says:

Escobar just looks like a douche. Probably doesn’t help his cause.

  236. Escobar probably shouldn’t have said/done anything.

That being said, umps who toss people out for arguing is yet another example of idiot umpires putting themselves in the center of the game. He looked at you and “showed you up”? I don’t give a shit. Nobody cares. Move the hell on.

NFL and NBA players argue and plead and drop F-bombs on their sports’ referees all the time. They turn their head and ignore it. You should do the same, MLB umps.

    Get over yourselves.

  237. Ross in Jersey says:

    I love you Swish but… that’s a strike.

  238. j_Yankees says:

    That’s a strike.

  239. Jim S says:

    Holy lord Morrow is sick.

  240. mike c says:

swisher really does really try to walk a little too hard sometimes… a guy who can hit HR’s like that should be a little less afraid to swing at a borderline pitch

  241. BadaBling says:

    Cmon Tex!

  242. YankeesJunkie says:

This is just awful good pitching at this point. Please Cano!

  243. Guest says:

He’s like AJ Part II. Dominate, suck, dominate, suck. We keep getting him on dominate nights.

  244. I like the fact that both of tomorrow’s journeyman starters are sporting a 4.76 ERA on the year.

  245. Wow, tough to find good ball boys in Canada…..

  246. YankeesJunkie says:

That was a good call ump

  247. mbonzo says:

Same pitch to swisher is called a strike. I hate inconsistency.

  248. Good lord, I thought that “K” girl was going to fall.

  249. Ross in Jersey says:

How did Cano even foul that ball off? Dude’s locked in.

  250. Carlosologist says:

Morrow is a beast. No question.

  251. Wow says:

    Too many strike outs. Frick.

  252. Ross in Jersey says:

Attaboy Robbie. Might get him out of the game by the 7th now.

  253. Mike Axisa says:

Nice job Robbie. Hopefully they get him over 100 pitches this inning then go to town on the bullpen.

  254. mbonzo says:

    Tag one Jorge!

  255. Guest says:

    Spec-freakin’-tacular at-bat by Robinson.

  256. mustang says:

Great AB! got that pitch count up too

  257. Fred Lemond says:

    Yes Jorge!

  258. Ross in Jersey says:

    Fuck yeah Posada!

  259. Carlosologist says:

    HIP HIP!

  260. mustang says:

    YESSSSSSSSS
    Jorge !!!!

  261. Cy Pettitte says:

Sado getting it done, lets get one more for Ivanova

  262. Esteban says:

    Hottie behind homeplate

  263. YankeesJunkie says:

Cano may have just saved the Yankees from an additional inning of Morrow and Posada gave the Yanks new life.

  264. SouthernYankeeFan says:

    Jorge!!!

  265. larryf says:

    Jorge Po and Robbie Cano!!!!

  266. BadaBling says:

    Hip Hip…

  267. Kit says:

    Woo, Jorge!

  268. Guest says:

What’s tough is we can’t pinch hit for anyone in the bottom of the lineup.

  269. mustang says:

Totally sit up by cano and Jorge delivers nice work.

  270. j_Yankees says:

This is the part where some yankee “fans” would say AJ has a 2 cent head.

  271. Steal home, Jorge!

    #12consecutivesteals

  272. BadaBling says:

    Morrow doesn’t like Granderson.

  273. Ross in Jersey says:

Wow Curtis… that was a hanger dude, pull the trigger!

  274. YankeesJunkie says:

You got to think that is the last inning for Morrow.

  275. Gotta protect there, Curtis!

  276. BadaBling says:

1-2-3 bottom of the inning please!

  277. Kit says:

    Oh fuck. Please don’t guys.

  278. Cy Pettitte says:

    Roid rage….

  279. Ross in Jersey says:

    Hell yeah Nova, lol.

  280. Guest says:

    He’s a rookie. C’mon, Jose. Seriously.

  281. Carlosologist says:

    FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT

  282. mustang says:

That did it…I LOVE NOVA !!!!!

  283. YankeesJunkie says:

    Umps wrecking games.

    Bautista is being a bitch.

  284. JobaWockeeZ says:

Thanks for saving my team Bautista especially in the HR category but fuck you.

  285. bonestock94 says:

These jerk-offs always get uppity in August.

  286. JGS says:

Damn your lack of YES, SUNY cable, damn you!

    • phughesisgod says:

Umm, please dont tell me your talking about the cable that the SUNY schools use. I go up to Cortland next week, and this would be really deflating…Although, at orientation, I was watching the game on YES on the TV in the lounge, so maybe Cortland uses different cable…

      • JGS says:

I’m in Brooklyn. The cable they give us doesn’t have YES or MLB Network, and I’m in Brooklyn so mlb.tv is no good either. Sterling and Waldman is all I have. This is my second day back and I already can’t stand them

  287. Big Juan says:

Ivan Nova: my new favorite player.

    Jose Bautista: huge douche/gigantic pussy.

    • Big Juan says:

And fuck Jerry Meals for being such a pansy. Get back behind the plate and stop making a situation out of nothing.

  288. bexarama says:

LOL @ Nova starting a fight in his first big league start. That said, I would rather not have fights…

    • mike c says:

bautista started it… no way the kid tried to hit him intentionally. and by the way he mouthed off to the kid, he should have deserved it

  289. Guest says:

No need for anyone to get suspended here.

  290. Jake H says:

I don’t mind that at all.

  291. I want to see CC crush some people.

  292. bonestock94 says:

I want Posada to punch someone in the head again.

  293. mike c says:

now he should really drill that no-class bully

  294. Alex S says:

wheres kyle farnsworth when you need him?

  295. larryf says:

That’s the way we do it in Scranton baby!!!

  296. Ross in Jersey says:

    Batflip that, douche.

  297. Accent Shallow says:

My cable just went out — what happened? Nova threw upstairs to Bautista, Bautista took exception?

  298. JobaWockeeZ says:

Toronto fans need to STFU. That wasn’t close.

  299. Kit says:

    Nova won that one, bitch.

    /unlady like

  300. Pride Filled Fail by Bautista.

  301. Hey. Get off the edge of his mound.

  302. BAUTISTA RAN ACROSS HIS MOUND!!!

DID YOU SEE THAT? DRILL THE SONAFABITCH!!!!

  303. Brooklyn Ed says:

Shelley Duncan would had been perfect in this situation.

  304. BigBlueAL says:

I fuckin love Nova now!! BTW gotta say if there are 3 players on the Yankees who probably couldnt beat up a fly its Cano, Arod and Jeter. lol

    • Wow says:

Nova just looks Ghetto. Kinda like King Felix.

    • Kit says:

Cano is a sweetheart, Derek probably can’t get involved because of his captain status (set a good example and all that), and Alex is too precious to get into a fight. I’m sure out of those three, Cano will be the one to school someone though.

  305. j_Yankees says:

Bautista walked on Nova’s mound!111!!!1 BEAT HIS ASS!

  306. mustang says:

great over swing and he can sit his punk ass down

  307. Ross in Jersey says:

    Postgame should be fun!

  308. Carlosologist says:

I would have loved to see Nova go inside again and see Bautista charge the mound, only to see Nova deck his ass a la Porcello v Youkillis last season.

  309. YankeesJunkie says:

    How was that a single?

  310. Wow says:

Btw where was Mo during all that? I’m pretty sure he didn’t even bother running out. I think he was out back sipping tea.

    • Alex S says:

      meditatin’ and shit yo!

    • larryf says:

Doing a Canali shoot. Will be finished in the 8th inning..

    • bexarama says:

      Heh.

I still remember during that one game at Fenway when Beckett basically went completely nuts, throwing at people with the bases loaded, and tensions were really rising at one point (I think when he drilled Jeter in the back with the bases loaded?). A-Rod was barking fucking asshole and the like. It didn’t lead to a fight, but people were pissed. And anyway, there in the dugout, not looking too pleased, was… Mariano.

I was like OH SHIT NOW THE RED SOX ARE GONNA GET KILLED WITH LIGHTNING.

  311. Cy Pettitte says:

that seemed a bit premature, no?

  312. Guest says:

    Wow, that’s a quick hook.

  313. mustang says:

    WHY?
    WHY?

  314. Jake H says:

To me that’s a quick hook there by Joe G.

  315. JobaWockeeZ says:

For the lulz, A-Rod makes that play. Wait why is Nova getting taken out?

  316. Hughesus Christo says:

    What the fuck, Girardi?

  317. Ross in Jersey says:

What the hell is the point of using Nova and a B lineup if you’re going to take him out after 70 pitches in a tie game? This makes no fucking sense, Joe.

    • He’s a rookie and you don’t want to overexpose him? And he just almost started a brawl? And we have an excellent bullpen?

(I thought it was a bit of a quick hook as well, but I see some form of logic behind it.)

      • Ross in Jersey says:

First one, fair point. He’s been starting at SWB though, not like he’s not used to the stress on the arm.

I don’t think the high pitch was intentional. Hilarious, but not intentional. And I’d prefer not to overextend our excellent bullpen whenever possible.

  318. Big Juan says:

    Why pull him so early?

  319. Not a fan of pulling Nova here…

  320. UncleArgyle says:

Your taking him out because he gave up an infield single? Does Girardi get paid by the managerial decision or something?

  321. Esteban says:

Clap for ‘em clap for ‘em eyyy

    • BadaBling says:

I dunno if a star was born but I’m glad a Yankees pitcher finally knocked an opposing player on his ass, is that why he got the hook?

  322. YankeesJunkie says:

WTF? Nova has 73 pitches. Considering no one is giving the Yankees length I don’t know why you unnecessarily go to the pen now.

  323. Mike Axisa says:

This pitching change seems a little … premature.

  324. larryf says:

Another start in Chicago. If Nova punched us in the face, we would enjoy it.

    /stay thirsty’d

  325. mustang says:

I’m sorry but that’s bull shit.
    73 pitches!

  326. Who was it that I said looked like a pigeon? ‘Cause Damaso Marte totally does, too.

  327. mike c says:

great night for the kid, i would have given a B+– but sending bautista flying in the dirt makes it an A-

  328. UncleArgyle says:

In two games when our bullpen is tired, we can remember this move.

  329. Ross in Jersey says:

Seriously Joe that’s fucking stupid. Let the kid save your bullpen. Terrible managing.

  330. Guest says:

I thought we didn’t want to over-extend our bullpen. If Nova is pitching well and throwing very few pitches, why put unnecessary strain on the pen? Curious Joe.

  331. Chris says:

Bench clearing brawls would be a lot more fun if there were more brawling and less bench clearing.

  332. BadaBling says:

Nova looked good, shoulda kept him in. He looked locked in.

  333. phughesisgod says:

LMAO at Jose Bautista. What a pussy.

BTW, Cano’s reaction was priceless. I wish I could have taken a picture of it. He was just laughing at how retarded that was of Bautista.

Now, the Blue Jays are going to hit us, and a brawl will break out, and people will get suspended all because Jose Bautista is a fucking pussy.

  334. mbonzo says:

Maybe Nova’s pitch wasn’t an accident and Girardi is punishing him.

  335. MikeD says:

Starting pitcher pulled at 70 pitches in a tie game?

  336. JoeyH says:

Girardi wants the Chicago job a little early I see…..

  337. mustang says:

    micro-managing

no reason to take the kid out

  338. Guest says:

Did Logan comeover in the Granderson deal?

  339. JobaWockeeZ says:

Yeah gotta say this decision was a bit overmanaged.

  340. YankeesJunkie says:

Well at least Boone is getting the job done.

  341. phughesisgod says:

Umm, really, Joe? Really? Im sorry, I havent questioned you alot this year, but I mean, come on. Nova was solid after that 1st inning and only had 73 pitches! What ever happened to not overworking the bullpen?

    Ugh sometimes Girardi baffles me.

    • Greg says:

The only thing I can think of is that Nova was on a pitch count

      • Ivan Nova is a rookie who’s been throwing really hard all game and just threw over the head of the guy who hit a homer off of him, almost igniting a brawl.

Think about that for a moment and then evaluate Joe’s decision again.

        • Big Juan says:

          Meh.

I can see the logic, but I didn’t see anything that indicated Nova had lost his composure or his stuff. The move worked out in the end, so I’m not complaining, but I would have enjoyed seeing how he worked through that inning.

      • Scooter says:

Maybe for a first major-league start, 75 pitches (or closest batter to that) was the magic number.

Other possibility – the first inning was definitely high-stress. Maybe Nova was getting gassed. The pitch to Bautista might have been a clue

  342. larryf says:

Good job Boone. To the binder boys!!

  343. Big Juan says:

We can say what we want about that pitching change, but those three sliders were straight filth from Logan.

  344. Accent Shallow says:

Clearly, this was so Logan could make Lind look silly.

  345. Ivan says:

    Come on.

  346. Nigel Bangs says:

    Nothing wrong with those results.

  347. Carlosologist says:

Watch, people are going to start throwing shit at Logan.

  348. YankeesJunkie says:

Did Nova pitch well enough to give himself another start or will he just be a long reliever for when AJ and Vazquez pitch.

    • JoeyH says:

I think he and Moseley are so closely lined up for a reason.

      • YankeesJunkie says:

True, but Vazquez has been quite awful the last few starts I would not be surprised to see Yankees give him time off to straighten out Vazquez. However, Nova impressed me today. Too many pitches up in the zone, but at least he has enough stuff where his location does not have to be pinpoint every pitch.

  349. mustang says:

And Mosely going for you tomorrow.

    You idiot!

  350. Wow, that really blew up in Joe’s face.

  351. bexarama says:

    No more Morrow!!! Party time!

  352. China Joe says:

I don’t like the move at all, it smacks of the “burn out the good relievers and lose the game with Gaudin in the tenth” road game

  353. Fred Lemond says:

Ramiro doesn’t want Nunez to steal his job

  354. Esteban says:

Whoa Whoa WHoa, Ramiro with two hits in a night?!

  355. Something about Rakin’ Ramiro Pena?

  356. Kiersten says:

John Flaherty: impressed by 16 RBIs.

  357. Carlosologist says:

We have to win this game because Pena got a hit.

  358. Nick says:

Gotta say I love that Nova was challenging Bautista. That’s what you do when a hitter is too comfortable at the plate. You throw inside. If it hits him, it hits him. That’s the mentality you have to have on the mound. Good to see that type of attitude out of Nova in his first ever start in the bigs.

    • larryf says:

saying that Joe G pulled him because of that pitch better not be true. How passive can a manager be?

      • Kit says:

You have to be passive when you’re in a pennant race. You don’t want players ejected, suspended or injured. Especially not when you already have injuries to certain players on your team. It was the best move. It worked out. Let it go, please.

      • Here’s something else:

I went back and watched that Bautista PA again. On the first pitch of the PA, Nova threw the pitch and then stood in place and pivoted to watch the ball Bautista hit fly foul into the stands.

On the next pitch, he threw at Bautista’s head and then took three steps off the mound towards the plate while looking at Bautista. That, in addition to the pitch itself, is what set Bautista off.

I’m sure Joe saw that as well. The more I see of this, the more I agree with Joe’s quick hook.

  359. Ivan says:

Who said Pena Sucks…well I did but still…

  360. JGS says:

“As a left handed hitter, he really is not bad”
    -John Sterling

    Pena as LHB, 2010: .083/.115/.083

  361. Ross in Jersey says:

    Oh good, Cervelli’s up.

    come onnnnn reverse jinx.

  362. larryf says:

    Ramiro “Mendoza-line” Pena…

You can only hope to contain him.

  363. Jai says:

WTF… blue jays commentators just said that Yanks are so good in hitting in RISP

  364. Joe says:

wait cerveli wasnt wearing batting gloves this time up…

  365. Ross in Jersey says:

Nothing good ever happens with Cervelli at the plate. Ever. Seriously, when is enough enough with this guy? When his OBP finally dips below .300?

  366. BadaBling says:

    Terrible DP.

  367. Reggie C. says:

    Big thread tonight.

Nova pitched as well as I expected. We should all be pleased with a 2 run, 5.1 inning start.

  368. Carlosologist says:

Fun fact: Ramiro Pena has 24 hits on the season. The Yanks are 14-4 in games in which Pena has a hit.

  369. Wow says:

And the placeholders remind us why they are placeholders.

  370. Greg says:

That sequence is why the Yanks need another hitter. Call up Montero just do something. THe bench is awful

    • Kit says:

Why the urgency with Montero? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, he took time to adjust to AAA pitching, it will probably take him time to adjust to Major league pitching. Flailing at balls will not be useful to anyone. This line up and defense is a temporary fix for a not severe problem. Tomorrow Derek will be in the line up and Cervelli won’t.

      • Greg says:

I know but these games are so crucial

      • Chris says:

I’m still not convinced that the poor start wasn’t related to his broken hand from last year. He completely sucked in the Venezuelan winter league last year, too….

        • Big Juan says:

Interesting point. Not sure why I hadn’t thought of that.

        • Kit says:

I can’t tell you if it is related or not, but the fact of the matter is, that it takes time to adjust to pitching either way. The Yankees are the prime example of that. Good pitching will confuse any major league hitter. If it’s pitching you’ve never seen before, especially with talented veteran pitchers who know how to mix pitches and get you out, you’re not going to go on a tear. You’re not going to hit as well as you’d like to. I like Montero as much as everyone else. Believe me. But I’m also aware of the fact that he’s young, he’s still has some skills to work on and improve, and if he’s going to be on this team, I will not accept a sub par performance. I expect great things out of him, and I would like him to get the experience, the necessary skills, and the confidence to own as many pitchers as possible.

    • No. We’ll be fine when ARod and Berkman return. No need to panic.

  371. Gonzo says:

Hey if they send Nova down, can they bring him back up when the rosters expand or do they have to wait the 15 (I think it’s 15) days?

I am not saying they will, should, or need to send Nova down, but do you think they would bring up Romulo or Albie as a bullpen saver as the counter move? That may explain Nova’s quick hook. I don’t quite agree or think this is the case though.

  372. CapitalT says:

Just pulled up the game and thought I was watching Major League: Who are these guys?

  373. j_Yankees says:

wow…this is actually a fairly big spot for Joba.

  374. I don’t get nervous when Joba comes into a game anymore. This is improvement.

    /zen’d

  375. Kit says:

Your weak “Yankees suck” chants do not impress me, Canadians.

  376. Reggie C. says:

Someone has got to update Flaherty on Cervelli’s numbers. Flaherty keeps saying Cerv can “handle the bat.”

  377. BadaBling says:

    Joba looks thinner…

  378. Total Dominication says:

My Brother as I walk into the house: It’s 2-2, Cano got a RBI 2b, and was driven in by Posada. Jose Bautista got a 2-run home run

Me: Someone got on base for Jose Bautista?!?!?!?!?

  379. Total Dominication says:

Joba pissed that Ivan Nova is starting and he isn’t.

  380. j_Yankees says:

    Well done, Joba. Well done.

  381. Hey guys (and ladies), question.

Is it just me or does John Flaherty just suck the life out of the room every time he opens his mouth?

  382. Hughesus Christo says:

Buster Olney just compared Nova to Hellickson. Wrong for so many reasons.

  383. Reggie C. says:

The earlier posts on this thread mention that NOVA got the 4 seamer up to 97 mph.

I can imagine the league interest in Nova’s second start has shot waaaaaay up if Nova repeats that velo reading. But did Nova generate any strikes from those FBs?

  384. Guest says:

13 innings one run. Nice to see Joba’s results are starting to catch up with his peripherals.

  385. Reggie C. says:

C’mon BG. Now would be an opportune time to get on base.

  386. Trog of the Kinglodytes says:

Yankee pitchers many people wanted DFA’d at some point this season:

    Boone Logan
    Dustin Moseley
    Sergio Mitre
    Chad Gaudin

    Still want them all DFA’d?

  387. BadaBling says:

    That was a strike!

  388. Carlosologist says:

Bunch of borderline calls in that AB.

  389. gxpanos says:

Rough day for Gritt. Shouldve protected on that one.

  390. Total Dominication says:

    Damnit.

  391. I love two pitch at bats from the number three hitter with the go ahead run on base.

    Tex pulled a jeter there.

  393. BigBlueAL says:

Having a pretty good offensive year? Didnt I just see his OBP at .265?

  394. Brent says:

    God damn.

  395. Greg says:

  396. BigBlueAL says:

    But of course.

    Jose Bautista: http://www.myfacewhen.com/3/

  403. Total Dominication says:

Holy shit. Someone check this man’s piss.

  404. Mike Axisa says:

Boy, Bautista’s got that bat flip down, eh?

    Enjoy fourth place, loser.

    • Trog of the Kinglodytes says:

There’s roid rage going on here, roid rage, I tell you. If not from Bautista, then from me!

Whatever pitching book we have on him should be set on fire.

  405. bexarama says:

    Ortiz-esque trot there.

    (Also ugh I called it.)

  406. Who does Bautista think he is? Miguel Cabrera?

  407. Esteban says:

Jose Bautista WILL get beaned this series.

  408. SouthernYankeeFan says:

    damn that sucks

  409. Robertson missed badly there. Yikes.

  410. King of the Troglodytes says:

Why is it the same assholes that continually hit HR after HR against this team?

  411. j_Yankees says:

guess i’ll be the only one to take exception with the Manny act on that one.

  412. Poopy Pants says:

Cue everyone trying to justify mocking someone who’s having a great season by lying and saying his head is huge from HGH.

  413. gxpanos says:

There’s a zero percent chance that the rest of this series will be without further…incidents.

  414. mike c says:

legal canadian hgh, that is all

  415. Big Juan says:

Dude needs to get his ass flipped. On multiple occasions. Hope he enjoys his one year in the sun.

  416. Ross in Jersey says:

There you have it folks. Joe Girardi wants to let the Blue Jays walk all over the Yankees. Sorry, that’s horrible.

  417. BklynJT says:

That was an awesome taunt at Cervelli.

  418. RalphieD says:

i think that celebration at homeplate was a shot at cervelli

  419. Pat D says:

Wow, when’s the last time Robertson gave up a tater?

Also, this is your fault, bex.

  420. Kit says:

I love it when players in a 4th place division team are smug about their accomplishments. Guess where you’re going in October? You guessed right, bitch, you’re going home.

    /unlady like again

  421. Ross in Jersey says:

Seriously, how the fuck do you let Jose be the one to beat you there?

  422. V says:

New rule. DO NOT THROW BAUTISTA A FUCKING STRIKE.

  423. YankeesJunkie says:

I hope someone just drills Bautista and then goes on to beat the shit out of him when he tries to attack.

  424. Louis says:

    Fucking Jose bautista

    • VTBlogger says:

Better living through chemistry…. Bud Selig once again, like the mayor in Jaws, will ignore this problem until it swims up and bites him in the ass..

  425. Pat D says:

Everyone wants Bautista plunked. You think Moseley will do that?

  426. bexarama says:

Playing the Red Sox this year is less painful than playing the Blue Jays.

    /things I shouldn’t say’d

  427. Poopy Pants says:

Lots of mentally healthy people here.

    • bexarama says:

Why are you here if you clearly don’t enjoy the site?

    • Kit says:

Unlike you, people here actually know and understand rationality, humor and baseball. If you’re not a Yankee fan, why don’t you go cheer for your decrepit Red Sox and just back the hell away? You’re only going to face more and more scorn.

  428. iYankee(next generation from Apple) says:

Damn… tough loss for the Yanks.

  429. Esteban says:

Such a douchenozzle. Watch out Bautista, watch out.

  430. YankeesJunkie says:

So right now it looks like Cano, Posada, Granderson, then Jeter. Hopefully Bautista makes a huge error that costs the team the game and then gets beaned.

  431. Wow says:

This game should be tied. Friggin’ umps.

  432. King of the Troglodytes says:

9 HRs in 28 career games against the Yanks. Someone scout this guy, please. While you’re at it, scout Russell Branyan, too.

    • Drew says:

What does scouting him have to do with it? D-Rob was trying to go away and left a 92 mph heater right down the middle. That’s not where he was trying to throw it.

    • JohnnyC says:

At least Branyan has a history of hitting the long ball (if nothing much else). Bautista? Yeah, if he were a Yankee right now with 40 home runs after a career high of 16 you’d have Selig himself drawing blood from his arm.

  433. bonestock94 says:

Gregg is beatable, lets do it

  434. Rally time, mother fuckers. Start it up, Robbie.

  435. Greg says:

NOw I have to listen to ESPN suck Boston off

  436. Accent Shallow says:

I don’t think much of Kevin Gregg, but 7-8-9 will do their best to kill any potential rally.

  437. Trog of the Kinglodytes says:

Is Bautista on a one-year contract with the Jays? If so, I wonder what team is going to get suckered into overpaying for him.

  438. louis says:

so cano is gonna hit a ball and jose bautista is gonna try to rob the home run but its gonna hit him in the face and bounce off and go over the fence :)

  439. Hummingbird S. says:

should have crushed that…right down the middle.

  440. Damn, that pitch had just enough run to not be a complete meatball.

  441. Fred Lemond says:

    Posada take his ass deep

  442. Total Dominication says:

Cano clogging up the bases with his fancy OBP stats and plate discipline.

  445. Fred Lemond says:

    Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

  447. louis says:

    DAAAAAMMMMNNNNIIIITTTTT

  448. He’s at 47 now. Over/Under: 60.5 walks for Cano this year.

  449. Woof. That one hurt my feelings.

  450. Ivan says:

    I thought he had it.

  451. Esteban says:

Gave it a ride Posada, crap

  452. A-Rod's Hip says:

    FUCK! just missed it…

good news that Jorge’s at least rediscovered his stroke..

  453. JGS says:

    Fuck. You. Sterling.

  454. Zooboy says:

Why, oh why do I fall for Sterling’s missed HR call every single time?

    • A-Rod's Hip says:

o my gosh.. i feel for both of you (JGS and Zooboy).. thankfully i’m not listening to him on radio

what did he do this time???

  455. Esteban says:

    ARE YOU SERIOUS???????

  456. Total Dominication says:

    WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?????????

  457. A-Rod's Hip says:

holy shit, what the hell kinda strike zone does this guy have????

  458. YankeesJunkie says:

  471. A-Rod's Hip says:

WOW.. so now the strike zone extends to the batters box?? LMFAO!! what a fuckin joke man

and any time Curtis argues, you know you were wrong

  472. Brooklyn Ed says:

  473. Big Juan says:

Seriously, I said tough loss and this is what you come up with…. immediately I am a ledge jumper. What the fuck is going on here tonight that everyone is outer limits.

That is why I am here to cheer the Yankees losses. Your an ass sometimes.

        • bexarama says:

You’re constantly like this, declaring games over when they’re not, generally only saying negative things about the team. I find that terribly annoying and I suspect I’m not the only one. I never said you were a ledge jumper.

And you’re right. I am an ass sometimes.

          • iYankee(next generation from Apple) says:

constantly?????? Wow, did not realize I was enrolled in the Tony Robbins Yankees school of “drool all over”.. You make is sound like I am baby carlos or one of those other yahoos.

Let me know when you are back from hyperbole.

Wow, did not realize I was enrolled in the Tony Robbins Yankees school of “drool all over”.

I have no clue what this means. Seriously.

            • bexarama says:

A lot of the time, you are.

I think people get annoyed when you declare games over when they’re… you know… not. I know I do. And no, it’s not just you that does that. And then you brag after the game’s over because you called the Yankees losing? C’mon, man. Not the way to be.

              • And then you brag after the game’s over because you called the Yankees losing? C’mon, man. Not the way to be.

That. The only thing more annoying than preemptively declaring defeat is bragging about being right preemptively declaring defeat.

It’s as if you’re more interested in the Yankees losing so that your fatalism can be proven right. Those are fucked up priorities.

        • poster on another computer who happens to be a deuce bag says:

          “Your an ass sometimes”

It’s one fucking game, get over yourself.

I’m in a bad mood too, as you can see, but don’t act like a dick and a three year old because the Yankees lost one fucking game with a kid making his first start out on the mound and the D lineup out. You’re embarassing yourself.

      • iYankee(next generation from Apple) says:

embarrassing myself? REally? I said it was a tough loss. That was it and you freaks of nature go off like you do on everyone else.

Good God. It was a tough loss, Nova pitched well, Arod is out, Captain DP sat all night, Nunez, Cervelli, and Pena all played. Perhaps I missed something.

        • Kit says:

Not to continue to kick up shit, but the fact that you were being childish is what pissed him off. Telling someone to kiss your ass is unnecessary and uncalled for. You were right, but declaring a loss before the end of the game annoys everyone.

          • poster on another computer who happens to be a deuce bag says:

No, he wasn’t right. The game wasn’t lost at that point, the game is not lost until the final fucking out is recorded.

That we ended up losing does not mean that we lost.
And asking soembody to kiss your ass makes you sound like a complete dick.

            • Kit says:

I meant he ended up being right about the loss.

              • poster on another computer who happens to be a deuce bag says:

No, he said the game was already lost. Regardless of whether they lost or not, he was wrong-one fucking run isn’t even close to a lost cause.

                So no, he was wrong.

            • iYankee(next generation from Apple) says:

Whatever. Whether I said it at the bottom of the 8th or said it now, it was a tough loss.

These are NOT the 2009 comeback Yankees. These are the 2010 Yankees with one, maybe two players hitting .300 or higher. They struckout 10+ times tonight, only had 6 hits and did not have their best line up – unless you consider that their best line up.

It is reasonable to assume they would not score in the top of the 9th. Granderson, Nunez, Pena, and Cervelli were a combined 2 for 12 with 5 men LOB. None of them scored or had RBI’s. Pena’s hits were insignificant in the scope of 9 innings.

So while I would LOVE for the Yankees to rally, they are not built that way right now. August has been up and down – meaning one game they hit and score, the next barely.

I fail to see a pronouncement of a loss a half an inning early as an avenue for the crap most hold and wait to just pounce on anyone posting something sarcastic or deemed negative.

              • poster on another computer who happens to be a deuce bag says:

If you didn’t think the Yankees had a shot of scoring one run in one half inning, you don’t understad baseball.

BTW, we lead the league in comebacks. At least last I checked, which was like a week ago. We have to still be top five.

              • I fail to see a pronouncement of a loss a half an inning early as an avenue for the crap most hold and wait to just pounce on anyone posting something sarcastic or deemed negative.

Do you at least see the blatant asshattery of posting again later to say “Called it!”

                Because that’s fucking childish.

It’s one thing to look at my son’s low SAT scores and tell me he probably won’t get into a good college… it’s a whole ‘nother thing to bother me again when he’s flipping burgers at McDonald’s and say “See, I told you his dumb ass was a loser”.

              • bexarama says:

You’re right. They’re not the 2009 Yankees. That doesn’t mean this isn’t a good team, and the 2010 Yankees still lead the AL in comebacks. More importantly, teams do not need X exciting comeback wins to be good.

It is reasonable to assume they would not score in the top of the 9th. Granderson, Nunez, Pena, and Cervelli were a combined 2 for 12 with 5 men LOB. None of them scored or had RBI’s. Pena’s hits were insignificant in the scope of 9 innings.
We also had Cano and Posada coming up, who are power threats. And Pena’s hits would’ve been significant if there was a guy on third when he got them. That’s how baseball rolls, though.

              • Jerome S says:

These Yankees have had some ass-kicking comebacks this year – but they’ve been doing it away, noticeably, so they weren’t walk-offs.

        • embarrassing myself? REally? I said it was a tough loss. That was it and you freaks of nature go off like you do on everyone else.

The reason people went off on you was because you declared it a tough loss before the game was actually over. It wasn’t a tough loss at that point. We were only down one measly run.

That’s ledge jumping, whether you admit it or not. Declaring defeat before we’re actually defeated is textbook ledge jumping.

          • poster on another computer who happens to be a deuce bag says:

Not only that. Also because he asked somebody to kiss his ass.

Even if he was actually right (and he’s not) that’s childish and asinine. All of that gets magnified when you realize he was wrong, because the game was not over.

  492. YankeesJunkie says:

Well the umps effectively screwed the Yankees at every point of the game. The 2 run homer that should have been a solo shot and extended strike zone for Canadians. Umps need a union because if there was not they would all be fired for being shit.

  495. BigBlueAL says:

I didn’t choose Bautista as the Player of the Game.

    • For the 1,000th time in a row, I have chosen tonight’s umpiring crew as the Players of the Game. They really stepped it up and made it very dramatic with the human element we all love. This game would have been boring as hell without those blown calls and extra baserunners and arguments and the ejection.

Those guys brought it today, and they’re why I love baseball. I love watching the umps do their thing. It’s captivating.

I’m almost glad the team had that decisive loss to King Felix Friday. Otherwise we’d be in a trough of so-close-you-can-taste-it losses that are more typical of the pre-’04 Red Sox.

The ball comes off his bat like a super ball.

If you played in Canada, for a team that is so division fucked that it isn’t funny, wouldn’t you cheat all you could?? I doubt they even bother to test anyone on the Jays for anything.

/canadian’d – so does it even matter

I’m saying Girardi should have the umps take his bats away tomorrow to get X-rayed because the Yankees play the Blue Jays 8 more times. We can’t have one friggin guy on a 4th place team deciding a pennant race. You don’t think Joe Maddon would do this if he was costing the Rays wins? Even if it turns out legit and he’s just having a career year it doesn’t hurt to make sure. Best case scenario is his bat explodes into a million pieces like Sammy Sosa’s when he got caught corking.

Hunter Pence got tested after his two-HR game against the Mets (he said it on Twitter, it was fucking hilarious). And he’s on the Astros!!!!

Can anyone clarify how to pronounce Ivan Nova’s first name? Is it EE-vahn or EYE-vihn? Swear I heard them say it both ways on YES

So Mitch Williams said he respected “Nava,” I believe that’s how he pronounced it, for coming inside to Bautista but chastised him for throwing at head level.

After seeing the replay, I say that I’m glad Nova did that. Fuck Bautista. And if the Yankees are smart, Moseley will hit Bautista his first at bat tomorrow, so that it draws a warning and Toronto won’t be able to retaliate.

Wow, ESPN announcers (and it sounds like Aaron Boone) = t3h fail.

Talking about how Matt Cain is a ‘bulldog’ and how he wasn’t shut down after 150 innings in 2006, and how he learned from Jason Schmidt to be a ‘bulldog’.

Um, – Matt Cain threw nearly 200 innings in 2005, between the minors and majors. The ’150 innings cap’ is to keep young pitchers from throwing too many innings when they AREN’T accustomed to it.

And… Jason Schmidt… um… the mediocre pitcher, who had two great seasons, then promptly fell off the cliff with some injuries? Yeah, THAT’S what I want my young prospects to turn into. ROFL.
