Gotta work for it now… sheesh. Seems like the Yankees just haven’t been able to get that last out.

    • R

      Fire girardi now.

      • R

Kerry wood to save the 4run deficit.gms is rolling in his grave. Do girardis braces make him look 10yrs old or is his brain really that small? I hate u joe…nice joe face.

  • Big Bertha

And this season is now over. Can’t really fault Hughes, he shouldn’t have been in that spot. Girardi left him in too long and it should have been Andy pitching games 2 and 6. And then he brings in Robertson who has been ineffective all series? What happened to all hands on deck?

    • CP

Why is everyone convinced that the season is over as soon as the Yankees are down?

It’s not like this team led the majors in come from behind wins. Oh wait, they did.

      • iYankee(next generation from Apple)

        THAT

And they are hitting very well. Give it time.

    • Carlosologist

      (clears throat)

GAMES ARE NOT OVER IN THE SIXTH FUCKING INNING

    • Reggie C.

Hughes wasnt ready to come up big. The kid just wasnt ready.

      • CP

He gave up 4 hits in the game, including one infield single. If the Yankees could score some, his outing would look very different.

      • http://www.theyankeeu.com/author/steve-s/ Nostra-Artist

Yeah, Girardi should have never pitched him after he won 18 games this year. A much better choice would have been going with AJ Burnett twice, or giving Mitre or Gaudin a start.

        • Reggie C.

Now wins are a measure of pitching ability? Hughes second half was straight unimpressive and the young man was bailed out many a time.

I’m not damning Hughes for tonight’s performance. Tonight was simply a case of a young, inexperienced pitcher facing a talented lineup and getting beat. Was AJ a better option? Nah. But, that’s the state of the Yankees and thus you posited an entirely different question.

          • http://www.theyankeeu.com/author/steve-s/ Nostra-Artist

If someone is going to bitch about Girardi starting Hughes (as many have) then they are obligated to provide an alternative. The other options are all clearly worse, therefore it was the right move and these people are just vomiting out irrational nonsense.

  • IOI

Is there a statistic that measures how many times they bring the tying run to the plate when you say they will?

    • http://twitter.com/cephster Ross in Jersey

      Pretty sure he’s 3 for 3!

    • http://www.onedayonejob.com/ Willy

      It’s called 100%.

  • Slappy White

    Man that really escalated fast

  • Avi404

We will win this game. Book it.

  • iYankee(next generation from Apple)

    Another interesting stat.

Rangers have scored multiple runs in inning 12 times in ALCS. Highest-scoring team in MLB has done it just 3 times Yankees

  • Hummingbird S.

They will bring the tying run to the plate and fail to get a hit with RISP, as usual.

  • Hughesus Christo

And people will still say Girardi is a great manager.

    • iYankee(next generation from Apple)

Dave Robertson was the right move. He has pitched very well in the ALCS

      • CP

I’m not really sure what the complaint would be.

      • Hughesus Christo

How many times has he IBBed Texas into huge innings?

        • bonestock94

You really hate those walks? I mean hindsight is 20/20, I’d rather pitch to the worse player when I have the option.

          • Hughesus Christo

IBBing go-ahead runs over and over again? That’s stupid. it’s also Vlad Guerrero, not some scrub.

            • bonestock94

Meh, agree to disagree. They’re not go ahead runs if your pitching does the job and gets the guys out. Vlad is no scrub, but Hamilton > Vlad. I’m indifferent on Girardi, if it’s over tonight it’s 100% on the players.

            • CP

So you’d rather pitch to the (likely) 2010 MVP than the over-the-hill 2004 MVP?

Just because his name is still Vlad Guererro doesn’t mean he bears any resemblance to the man that won the MVP award 6 years ago.

              • Hughesus Christo

Umm…. Vlad Guerrero had a really good season. I don’t care how old he is, he isn’t “auto-walk the guy in front of him”

IBBing guys into terrible pitching situations early in the game and getting burned repeatedly is not “great managing.” I’m also wondering why he was a-ok gong to Wood 1 out later. If that’s the case, bring him in in the 4th. That also assumes it was the right move to pull Hughes there, which is wrong.

            • Adam

The go ahead run was already on base. And Vlad chases. He would have been a total dunce to pitch to Hamilton.

    • Big Bertha

Exactly. He cost us the series.

  • Carlosologist

…We’re not dead yet. Considering that Lewis has been sitting for a while, he may not be sharp.

  • Big Bertha

I just don’t know how we can leave so many meatballs right over the plate with 2 strikes. It’s baffling.

  • rek4gehrig

I thought all hands were on deck tonight. Why DRob? Where was Mosely? or CC?

  • All Star Carl

No CC? No Moesley? Wood in that situation?

    Posada calling a terrible game.

    Horrible.

    • http://twitter.com/cephster Ross in Jersey

Really, you wanted MOSELEY in that situation?

      • rek4gehrig

Yes indeed. Perhaps you forgot how well he pitched in Game 1?

        • tom

which offsets the entire rest of the season.

Until he gave up those runs in the Cliff Lee game, most people viewed Robertson as maybe our best non-Mo reliever; at least in a race with Wood. That he’s pitched poorly twice doesn’t turn him into some suck pitcher. Bad games happen. I wonder how many of you would have given up on ofter the Alomar homer.

          • tom

supposed to say “on Mo after the Alomar homer”

      • CP

Every move the manager makes is wrong.

And why would you bring in the lefty to face the right handed hitting Cruz?

      • All Star Carl

I sure as hell want him over D-Rob. What the hell has D-Rob done to take the mound over him?

    • rek4gehrig

Perhaps they didnt get the scouting report.

  • Andy

What happened to CC in the pen?

  • Yankee Doodle

Girardi gets my vote for worst manager in baseball

    • Mister Delaware

You get my vote for worst doodle.

    • Jerome S

      You’re a retard.

  • JerseyDutch

Has Gardner been on base in the ALCS?

    • http://kierstenschmidt.com Kiersten

He started the rally in Game 1 you might recall.

      • JerseyDutch

Shit, you’re right. Was so long ago I forgot…

  • bonestock94

    No slide, booooooooooooo

  • poster on another computer who happens to be a deuce bag

The Yanks are playing like shit. But Mike’s threads are fucking magical. They always end up bringing up the tying run.

That said, the way they’re playing, 4 runs is a tall order.

  • quinn the eskimo stole me face

sell the house sell the car sell the kids find someone else forget it i’m never coming back forget it

    • dkla

      apocalypse now’d

  • Andy

WHAT THE FUCK!!!!! ITS COBY FUCKIHG LEWIS

    • http://www.workwithpete.com Pete M.

…who will promptly get lit up in his first WS appearance. Count on it.

      • iYankee(next generation from Apple)

And the joy of that is exactly what while Yankee fans and the Yankees themselves are sitting around throwing cliches out to justify their performance?

        • poster on another computer who happens to be a deuce bag

We don’t want the team that beat the Yankees to win.

We’re allowed to pick a team to root for.

          • RSA

word. fuck texas…and i live here

    • Slappy White

Actually, its COLBY Lewis. But yeah, I Agree

    • http://www.workwithpete.com Pete M.

It won’t be a joy, it will actually be a tremendous source of aggravation.

  • Kevin

wtf is jeter swinging at? …. this team is driving me nuts

  • Hummingbird S.

Love the fight by our offense.

  • Frigidevil

    Seriously Jeter? wtf

  • Big Bertha

LOL, but we can still come back! Look at these guys trot up there and hit weak grounders. Just a pathetic performance all around in an elimination game. Girardi should be fired right after the game.

    • bonestock94

      piss off

      • tom

        ignore the troll

    • Betty Lizard

      Bitter Lemon

      2 lemons
      20 fluid ounces water
      1/4 lb sugar

1 Cut the lemons into pieces, put in a saucepan with the water and bring to the boil.
2 Reduce the heat and simmer gently for 10-15 minutes, until the fruit is soft.
3 Add the sugar and stir until dissolved.
4 Remove from the heat, cover and cool.
      5 Strain before using.

    • Big DaveyNJ

      Go root for the Rangers.

      Also, you suck.

  • jbkx

Colby Lewis having his dream year. This twat will be in triple A then out of baseball in 4 years. Dammit

    • iYankee(next generation from Apple)

Maybe but right now when it counts he is 2 hit pitching the best offense team in baseball who scored the most runs and won the second most games.

      • poster on another computer who happens to be a deuce bag

Yeah. And? This doesn’t change jbkx’s point at all.

  • Andy

Why aren’t we trying to work up this guy’s pitch count?

  • adeel

    My optimism is strong…
Had to throw common sense out the window.

  • iYankee(next generation from Apple)

I love Jeter but his AB’s in the playoffs, save for a few, have not only been questionable (first pitch swining down 4 runs) but when he does swing they have not been very good.

    • Jon in CUO

.273/.333/.500 in this ALCS. Quit whining.

      • poster on another computer who happens to be a deuce bag

        That’s not that good dude.

        • Jon in CUO

Yep, I didn’t think you knew anything about baseball, and this comment confirms it.

          • poster on another computer who happens to be a deuce bag

I didn’t say it was terrible. I said it wasn’t that good.

If you want to make enemies, be my fucking guest you fucking asshole.

            • Mister Delaware

It would be the 3rd best OPS among SS this season. Or .100 points above Derek Jeter.

              • poster on another computer who happens to be a deuce bag

My bad. Low OBP, high slugging fooled me. And low average. Oops.

Once again though, Jon in CUO-you’re still a dick.

        • Hughesus Christo

Those numbers over a full season = 3rd best SS in baseball, dude.

          • poster on another computer who happens to be a deuce bag

SS’s in baseball suck. But actually, you’re right.

            Which is a bit sad.

Jeter was actually one of the best SS’s in the AL this year though.

He still had a shitty year.

          • Mister Delaware

(Annndddd … I should have read down first.)

        • CP

Yeah it is. His career OPS is .837, so basically he’s matched his career numbers (although with more power and less OBP).

          • poster on another computer who happens to be a deuce bag

I guess lower OBP, higher slugging percentager fooled me. Sorry.

That said, Jon in CUO-you’re still a dick.

            • Jon in CUO

              Met fan.

              • poster on another computer who happens to be a deuce bag

                Now I’m wounded.

                *Cries*

      • iYankee(next generation from Apple)

        Um not in 2010.

  • jbkx

Christ that ball girl is a lard ass.

  • Andy

You have got to be kidding me.

  • poster on another computer who happens to be a deuce bag

Seriously though, even the announcers saw that Lewis was pitching like shit earlier, and the Yankees could do NOTHING. That’s just bad play.

  • 3Earnhardt

Do you guys still want Gardner back?? Gardner= pinch runner in the 8th inning. Bring in Carl Crawford please!

    • Jerome S

      Shut the fuck up.

      • Mister Delaware

Ouch. This little convo took a right turn.

        • Jerome S

I’m just sick of people shitting on Gardner. He’s had some bad moments, and he’s not Carl Crawford, but he’s 16 million dollars cheaper and still a 4.0 WAR player.

          • Mister Delaware

(I was making an Earnhardt joke.)

            • bonestock94

looooool, well worth the wait + explanation

    • It’sATarp

Crawford looked like shit vs the rangers too

    • jbkx

      Agreed!

    • Reggie C.

I’d rather trade (or package) Swisher. This postseason slump aside, Swish’s trade value has never been higher.

      • Mister Delaware

        Neither has Cano’s.

        • Reggie C.

Cano is a top 10 hitter in baseball. You dont trade those guys.

Swisher can be replaced by Jayson Werth or even Brett Gardner (by signing Crawford to play LF).

    • Big DaveyNJ

The last thing this team needs is a 30+ or soon-to-be-30 year old ballplayer. We have enough of those, thanks.

  • Al

Sorry Mike, but you’re like The Boy Who Cried Wolf at this point. I would have said the Yanks would bring the trying run to the plate before the Robertson debacle. Unfortunately Girardi managed this game as though it were the middle of July. Does any body have any idea what he was thinking bringing Robertson in there?

    • Kevin in Delectable Princeton

Yes. Robertson is the 3rd best reliever on the Yankees. There is a lot of baseball left to play. Who else do you bring in? It made perfect sense.

      • CP

Moseley, obviously. I mean, remember when he struck out a bunch of guys that one time?

  • Reggie C.

    Colby Lewis.

Remember that name. This man shut down the Yankees.

  • Big Bertha

We’re making Colby Lewis look like Pedro. What an uninspired performance by every single player on the roster this series. And that blame falls squarely on Girardi. Braceface needs to go.

    • Stratman9652

Read what you just said you idiot. Every player has not performed at that falls on Girardi how?

      • Big DaveyNJ

This person must be a Red Sox fan and is hear just to annoy and incite. He (or she?) has brought nothing to the table whatsoever.

I mean, sure, I comment here maybe once every two weeks and I might even say some snarky but get shot down all the time, but DAMMIT at least I…

        Actually, I don’t know what i do.

  • http://www.workwithpete.com Pete M.

Ernie Johnson barely containing his enthusiasm.

    • http://RAB Nuke LaDoosh

      he’s a doooosh, and i know a doooosh when i see one

    • JerseyDutch

I didn’t think it was possible for me to like Ernie Johnson any less than I did… I was wrong.

  • Andy

Why does Jeter always swing at the first pitch? I get it’s his thing but it really comes across as arrogance when it’s so careless.

  • http://RAB Nuke LaDoosh

i picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue…

  • ZZ

Girardi is absolutely clueless. It’s unbelievable. This is a fucking elimination game and for the 2nd time this series he manages it like a regular season game.

Hughes was struggling all night, but working out of trouble. It was only a matter of time before it came back to bite him.

1st and 3rd tie game, you get Hughes the fuck out of there, bring in Wood, shut it down, and go from there in a tie game. No, let’s milk a few more outs out of my starter in a goddamn elimination game.

Then you bring in Robertson who has been throwing batting practice fastball all series? Are you kidding me. Just to warm up Wood 5 minutes later. He’s lucky it’s only 4 runs right now. Robertson was getting absolutely smoked.

No feel for the game for 2 months now from the manager. No urgency at all. Now fuckin Wood is probably coming into the game down 4 runs.

Washington has positively just owned Girardi this series.

    • http://www.workwithpete.com Pete M.

Is it *really* about managing? Did Girardi tell the last three guys to go up and hit weak grounders?

    • Big Bertha

I agree. He had CC and Wood he could have went to before Robertson. It was all hands in deck supposedly but he brought his worst option in once again. He didn’t pitch Andy in game 2 and 6, if he had we wouldn’t be in this situation!

      • Adam

Really? Our second best reliever all season was the worst option? If you bring Wood in there then you have to have Drob pitch near the end of the game. It’s inevitable. Right move, just didn’t execute. It happens, Girardi doesn’t throw the pitches. You truly are annoying.

        • Hummingbird S.

Robertson has been putrid lately, especially in this series. It was a mistake to bring him in in that situation and shit happened.

    • CP

      You’re completely wrong.

Just because the moves didn’t work doesn’t mean they were the wrong move.

  • It’sATarp

This team has nothing right now…Jesus i hope girardi throws a shit fit in the dug out to wake them up

    • Hummingbird S.

The team should be outraged at the moves he’s making.

  • Yankee Doodle

Gardner sucked Tex sucked, Swisher, not to mention pitching

  • Mike R

Yah.. This is going to be really hard to come back from.. Robertson should NOT of been in in such a situation.. It’s going to be hard to battle back and we only have 9 outs to do it.. Need to get our offense back out on the field and some big hits..

  • mbonzo

“The Yankees will bring the tying run to the plate in this game.”
    Thank you mike.

  • King of the Troglodytes

Karma’s a bitch – the Yanks pussed out the division to avoid Texas in the first round.

  • Mark

Here is Wood down 4, hilarious.

  • Andy

I must admit, I’m shocked. I wasn’t sure we were going to win this game, but I thought it would be a good game.

  • Tank Foster

Derek has gotten old, very fast. He’s playing like Omar Vizquel.

    • King of the Troglodytes

The Yanks shouldn’t offer him more than 2 years, $10M. Maybe a little kicker for hit 3000.

    • Mitchello

      Except vizquel can play ss…

    • CP

You realize he’s been the Yankees third best hitter this series (after Cano and Granderson)?

  • nathan

I refuse you to believe we will not have a crooked number inning in this game. Its the Yankee fiber

  • jbkx

Perfect spot to put one in Molina’s pie hole. Oh well.

  • mattt

I just feel miserable right now. Can someone make me feel better?

    • Henry

tell washington and hamilton to get u some blow.

  • Mike Sacks

Anyone else chanting Joh-nny Da-mon in their heads?

    • nathan

Hmm why? The ERA will go down to 2 or Texas’ BABIP will be @ .300

Wait, he would hv thrown two more noodles and we would have let up 4 more runs

    • Kevin in Delectable Princeton

No. He had a worse season than Gardner and Granderson. A MUCH worse season.

  • ZZ

    Unbelievable.

    Now you bring in Wood!?

Down 4 runs, against the bottom of the fucking lineup, with no men on base.

    It’s comical.

    • quinn the eskimo stole me face

Sell the house. Sell the car. Sell the kids. Find someone else. Forget it. I’m never coming back. Forget it.

  • Andy

Why is Wood in now? I don’t get it. If weren’t going to save Wood for the 7th or 8th, then why not put him in the 5th? I’m so confused.

    • mbonzo

I wanted Joba there. Joba looked so good in his relief appearances IMO and Robertson didn’t. Naturally Robertson was out there.

    • rek4gehrig

Dont be. It’s exactly what I expected G to do. He knows he screwed up in the earlier inning.

  • Big Bertha

Kerry Wood’s in the game DOWN 4 runs. Brilliant, Girardi. Maybe he could have been brought in when we were only down by 2 with a runner on 2nd but that would be too logical.

  • DOOM & GLOOM

    We need baserunners. Clock ticking.

  • Kevin

so 9 outs…. can we maybe see kearns pinch hit for thames in a big spot… im tired of seeing him hit vs rightys and swinging at junk

  • SF Yanks

Can someone give me some coping mechanisms? I can’t let this shit get to me and I’d do anything to be able to zen-baseball this shit right now.

    • Adam

You are a Yankee fan…we win the World Series far more frequently than everyone else. If we don’t win this year, then we got beat by a better team. It happens.

Also, this game ain’t over yet. Not by a muther effin long shot.

      • SF Yanks

“If we don’t win this year, then we got beat by a better team. It happens. Also, this game ain’t over yet. Not by a muther effin long shot.”

Oh, believe me, I understand. Unfortunately it doesn’t turn my frown upside down. Thanks for trying to help though.

It’s almost like I need something profound. Eh, screw it. I’ll be a sourpuss and get it out of my system.

    • Betty Lizard

Can someone give me some coping mechanisms?

Well, besides alcohol, if you have a cat that can help. Or, if you’re sick, as I am, then coughing is a welcome distraction. As is the lecture I have to write before Tuesday. And online Gin Rummy. And recaps of Project Runway. And the half-finished laundry. And . . .

      • SF Yanks

I have a little dog and that truly does help. It’s just too bad it only last 5 minutes.

I might hit up some NyQuil and sleep for 3 days. Or better yet, if I can somehow fall into a self-induced coma until next April. But I’ll wait until the end of the game before doing anything drastic.

  • FrankFernandez

    We retired Mitch Moreland!

  • Frank

    Why Yanks lost this series

25 2 strike hits for Rangers this series (and counting); too amny runs allowed with 2 outs- the inability to close out an inning has plagued this team all season;Yanks offense totally inept; poor execution of pitches(Hughes throwing a hanging curve to Vlad, who swings at anything, is a perfect example of why he has a long way to before he becomes an elite starter);if Yanks wind up losing this game, they would have lost twice to Colby Lewis and a game started by Tommy Hunter(at home).

    • Big Bertha

Why they lost the series is because Girardi decided to flip Andy in Phil because he thought it was brilliant strategy. Andy wins game 2 and he’s still pitching effectively in this one. Hughes loses game 3 and we never have to hear from him again in the series. Andy was wasted in this series.

      • Jerome S

Um it was actually a good idea at the time, considering how well Phil had done at Arlington.

        Hindsight is 20/20

  • ChrisR

Is it to extreme to say I only want to see Wood and MO on the mound for the rest of this game?

    • Claudell

Of course not. Should have been Wood last inning.

    • mbonzo

No thats whats gonna happen unless it goes to extras.

  • adeel

there is a really big chance that the yankees will lose and MO will not make an appearance…. =)

There has to be an organized campaign from baseball fans to do away with the save…. It’s ruining the game…

  • Reggie C.

Axisa’s lucky star of a statement: “yankees will bring the tying run to the plate…” just seems comical.

    • King of the Troglodytes

Sadly, it will be Swisher at the plate.

    • Jerome S

      I stand by his statement.

    • JerseyDutch

And if they do, you have to post “I’m a dooooooooosh” for doubting him.

      • King of the Troglodytes

Swisher needs to change his diaper, because he has shit himself this series.

    • Frigidevil

Do you forget what team you’re watching? This is the fucking New York Yankees. It’s not a good situation, but I will take this team own 4 in the 7th to any other team in the same situation.

  • Stratman9652

So where the hell was CC? Even AJ? Where the hell did all hands on deck go?

    • mbonzo

Who knew the Rangers would explode there? Wood and Mo for 6-9 now.

      • Stratman9652

He should have went to CC the minute he pulled Hughes. Having a starter back up a starter is a hell of a way to go. And I rarely question any of Girardi’s moves not involving Mitre or Gaudin.

  • King of the Troglodytes

Good to see the mighty Moreland can actually be retired.

  • Yankee Doodle

Thought they`d come up big.. crap shoot in the 7th game. 4 runs in 3 innings is possible but….

  • Jerome S

good inning let’s get the boys back out there.

  • bonestock94

    I’m gonna miss Kerry Wood

    • Hobs

You will see him next inning to hold the Yankee lead.

      • bonestock94

I like the cut of your gib.

  • http://www.theyankeeu.com/author/steve-s/ Nostra-Artist

It’s kinda funny that a health nut like Girardi is doing a Taco Bell commercial.

    • http://www.theyankeeu.com/author/steve-s/ Nostra-Artist

That’s like Al Gore doing a commercial for BP.

      • Betty Lizard

Hee. I loved it when Girardi’s wife said that a big blowout for Joe was having an extra helping of cereal.

  • http://RAB Nuke LaDoosh

“you’re done kid, i gotta pull ya”

Where were those words 45 minutes ago?

kid did not chew a heckuva chalupa today.

    • King of the Troglodytes

This commercial will be officially pulled tonight. Can Neftali Perez speak English?

  • jbkx

Paul O’Neill would be going medieval in the tunnel by now. Miss that, a lot.

    • JerseyDutch

You know, I think this team could use someone like that…

Yeah, because losing your cool is the key to success in pressure situations.

      • Yankees 2011

        It is called passion.
Hope your Latte is not too hot.

  • Andrew

How come Joe Girardi can pull the kid eating the chalupa but he can’t pull his pitchers before they blow the game?

  • cnicnyrnyy

best call Girardi makes….pulling that dipwad for mo at taco bell…no way was that guy gonna finish that thing!

  • Big Bertha

Anyone still think Girardi is a great manager? Where was Wood when it was still a ballgame? Why was Hughes left in to face Vlad? Why was AJ left in to face Molina? Why was Andy only allowed to pitch 1 game?

    • Adam

If you pitch Wood there you pitch DRob later in the game. He has faith in his players (oh and he also only has the pitchers he has). Robertson didn’t execute that is not Girardi’s fault for the love of cripe.

    • JFH

not joe’s fault that the starters and relievers have done poorly and our offense has made ordinary pitchers look extraordinary.

    • JerseyDutch

      Yes.

    • http://www.theyankeeu.com/author/steve-s/ Nostra-Artist

Why doesn’t Girardi have my crystal ball?

Yeh, and Girardi ain’t there to pull ya when you’re clearly full.

      • JFH

lol! thanks for making me laugh

  • ZZ

I honestly can’t believe what just transpired the past 2 innings.

David Robertson who has been absolutely awful this series faces Nelson Cruz with a man on 2nd in a 2 run game.

Kerry Wood faces Molina, Moreland, and Andrus down 4 runs with the bases empty.

    How is that even defensible?

    • first time lawng time

Girardi won a championship last year so he gets a free pass for everything.

      • poster on another computer who happens to be a deuce bag

Nt at all. Blame him for what you want to; I think these criticisms are fair. But winning a chmapionship and going to the ALCS the next year does generally get you a pass, yes.

You act like rehiring a guy after a WS year and a year where he went to the ALCS is somehow irrational.

  • nathan

Come on offense, 2 runs each inning

  • Big Daddy

This is what happens when you let go of 2 big run producers (Matsui and Damon) and use a TERRIBLE pitching coach. Proof? see Aj Burnett, Javier Vazquez, and Joba.

        That Island dude is turble.

    • Big Bertha

I agree. Matsui and Damon were huge losses. They wouldn’t be trotting up to the plate and hitting weak grounders. Matsui would be hitting 3 HRs in one game and Damon would be stealing 2 bases on one play. Girardi and his whole staff need to go.

      • Big Daddy

        YES!

      • CP

Matsui and Damon sucked. They sucked. If the Yankees had kept them, they’d probably not have even made the playoffs.

      • It’sATarp

This is so stupid it’s funny…how in the world is Damon gonna replace grqandy and his .500 obp and 900 ops this postseason? no seriously it’s hard to be better than grandy at this point.

Yanks down four. Only one run against Colby freaking Lewis. I think it’s safe to say that this series has been quite the embarassment for the New York Yankees. Bad luck, poor offense, poor pitching, meltdowns.

Well the season was fun until September. Although they won 95 games and made it to game 6 of the ALCS this season was a failure.

Better luck next year. If I’m gona lose, I’d rather lose to Tampa than Texas but whatever.

Let’s sit back and hope for a comeback, but if it doesn’t come, try to enjoy the last few innings from the team we love. Watch Wood pitch one last inning. See Berkman’s last AB as a Yankee. Anyone still think Girardi is a great manager? Where was Wood when it was still a ballgame? Why was Hughes left in to face Vlad? Why was AJ left in to face Molina? Why was Andy only allowed to pitch 1 game?

And this season is now over. Can’t really fault Hughes, he shouldn’t have been in that spot. Girardi left him in too long and it should have been Andy pitching games 2 and 6. And then he brings in Robertson who has been ineffective all series? What happened to all hands on deck?

Washington has positively just owned Girardi this series.

i picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue…

  • Mister Delaware

I’m a good person. I thought he blew out his knee at first and I honestly hoped he didn’t.

  • Mike R

Come on Swisher.. You gotta be fucking kidding.. That’s probably the game right there

  • Stratman9652

I take back any bad things I may have ever said about you Lance. God has this guy turned out to be a great pickup.

  • Hummingbird S.

What? Swisher failed with a RISP? That can’t be true.

  • Big Bertha

Someone tell me why Ron Washington was able to pull Tommy Hunter in Game 4 when he started to get in trouble but Girardi can’t pull AJ or Phil when they got in trouble? Washington has managed circles around Girardi and that’s just sad. Someone needs to take the fall for this loss and Joe has to go.

    • Esteban

He did pull Hughes!!!!! Robertson was probably not the best choice, but he had a good track record between this season and last.

      • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

        Yeah, that.

Hughes shouldn’t have been pulled a second sooner than he was. You have to let him face Vlad there.

        • Hummingbird S.

Agreed. The wrong decision was to bring in Robertson. That sealed the game.

    • Teatime

You’ve been saying the SAME thing over and over…

    • CP

In defense of the hitters, they’ve been getting terrible luck. Every time they hit the ball hard it’s right at someone.

      • Doug

        yeah, all 3 times

        • CP

There have been more than three hard hit balls.

    • It’sATarp

  • Reggie C.

    • quinn the eskimo stole me face

Maybe Wood should have been in, but anyone who says CC should have come into the 4th is a moron. CC has probably never come into a baseball game with a man on 2nd in the middle of an inning. It also takes too long for him to warm up to get in the game by the time Hughes was toast.

If Girardi wasn’t such a loser, he would have started Mo this game. AMIRIGHT?

  • DallasGreen

While many of Girardi’s moves will be discussed, he cannot take the fall for this one. The Rangers outplayed the Yankees – and more than I’ve seen them outplayed in a postseason series since KC in 1980. Gonna be tough to watch the Rangers celebrate. Gonna go pray for a miracle..

    • http://www.theyankeeu.com/author/steve-s/ Nostra-Artist

Bingo. The Rangers have pitched better, hit better and made some sparkling catches defensively. If we lose, it’s because the better team won.

  • JerseyDutch

I blame this whole year on not making Chad Gaudin the fifth starter…

  • Hughesus Christo

    lol, another IBB

How many times have the Rangers IBBed Cano/ARod?

    • CP

How many times have they been up with a runner on second and first base open? Don’t blame them, blame the guys batting ahead of them.

      • Hughesus Christo

As much as we all talk about the value of walks, the Yankees have been giving Texas free baserunners ALL SERIES. Hamilton was ice cold coming into this series and they IBBed the fuck out of him. Texas makes the Yankees EARN their runs.

We’re down 4 runs, and they put two more guys on base. This is fucking ridiculous.

        • tom

Actually, my recollection is, they only started IBBing Hamilton after he’d hit several home runs off them

        • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

We didn’t start IBBing him until after his 4 homers.

          Which is appropriate.

          • Hughesus Christo

That’s patently false, and HRs vs. Boone Logan should be irrelevant. They started the walk party in game 2.

            • Hughesus Christo

No response, but you’ll be defending Girardi tomorrow, amirite?

    • Mister Delaware

Eh, at this point you’re playing to allow zero runs. Setting up the DP is the way to go. Desperate times and measures and shit.

      • Hughesus Christo

What about when it was 1-1?

The excuse factory is working overtime.

        • Mister Delaware

The time it worked or the time it didn’t?

  • Ivan

While I don’t think any hitter deserves this type of respect unless your name is Bonds, I can’t really blame Girardi for doing this. Vlad is just a mistake hitter at this point of his career anyway.

    • Hughesus Christo

      Vlad Guererro hit 300/345/500. It’s 2010, not 2009.

      • CP

And he hit .278/.322/.426 since the ASB.

        • Hughesus Christo

That’s still too good to be putting him up with men on base over and over again.

          • tom

The alternative was letting MVP Hamilton bat in those spots, not some humpty-dumpty

            • Hughesus Christo

Remember how funny it was when people kept walking guys to pitch to ARod?

Guerrero had a better season than him. Let’s put it that way.

  • jbkx

    Cliff Lee in ’11 please.

      So true! So true!

    • CP

Absolutely agree. All of the people calling Girardi a bad manager, or the worst manager, or somehow blaming him are absolutely full of shit.

    • Sayid J.

Very productive comment, thanks for stopping by.

  • Stratman9652

Anyone else think Arod needs a bigger glove? Almost every ball hit his way has been an inch out of his reach.

Come on, enough with the IBBs for Hamilton.

    • Slugger27

honestly dude, most of the playoffs in baseball is luck

      • tom

When the Phillies finally won in 1980, after having failed in the playoffs in ’76, ’77 and ’78, Mike Schmidt told some reporter it was stupid to claim the team suddenly had more “character” because of what were probably a few lucky bounces

  • Aura and Mystique are not in texas

    Girardi really blew this game,

    • mbonzo

You’re not gonna win a game with 1 run. Do you want Girardi to go up there and hit a bomb for you?

      • Aura and Mystique are not in texas

Girardi has Ibb too many guys this series. and the Pitching rotation was fucked too it should have been
        CC
        Pettitte
        Hughes
        CC
        Burnett
        Pettitte
        CC

        • Rob

This is silly..Easy to say this bc it didnt work out..Hughes looks bad now, but was coming off a great start..Also you may be just exchanging W/L in Games 4 and 5, maybe you win game 4 (even though Burnett wasnt all that bad)..but I’m not sure AJ beats CJ, who knows, the results may not have been the same..and AJ may still have been pitching an elimination game, not so sure that’s too comforting.

      • Big DaveyNJ

        This.

  • Sunil

This is really disheartening, phil wasn’t good twice in a row. the offense hasn’t clicked at all. good luck getting a decent contract jeet

It’s October and basically we’ve got Pettitte, Mo, Granderson and Cano. That’s about it.

This is the time when you tip your cap. The Rangers outplayed us in every way possible. It only seems fitting that our season ends with a microcosm of September.

I’d wish the Rangers luck, but they can go burn in a hole for all I care. San Francisco is bringing home their first trophy since the move to the Bay. Book it.

    • Doug

we’re not allowed to tip our cap to the better team. we have to blame someone

Johnny Damon and Hideki Matsui are sitting at home laughing at us. He knows that if we just gave them the money he wanted (and deserved) they would have some offense going.

    • quinn the eskimo stole me face

They are laughing because they didn’t make the playoffs?

    • mbonzo

Because they had such great seasons. If only this team had Mickey Mantle… stupid Cashman should have kept him too.

No chance that Texas has just pitched really well?

    • Ed

I don’t care about last year. Texiera, ARod, Swisher are still postseason chokers. This time of year would much rather have guys with speed that can string some singles together instead of strike out and pop-up all the time.

A sac fly. Amazing how those small things like moving baserunners over and actually getting the run in with less than 2 outs add up.

    • Hummingbird S.

It’s easier when you can get baserunners, something the Yankees’ offense can’t do all that well.

    • Klemy

Every time they hit a ground ball, it was a hit and run, so we never got the double plays. Every other time they hit the ball and found grass. Painful stuff.

SO Yanks gona lost this series. But look at it the way they lost. I mean it;s not like they were ahead 3-0 and blew like some other team did. And they weren’t exactly the greatest team this year. I mean they were really good but it’s not like it’s surprising that they lost or an upset.

    • first time lawng time

By that last sentence I mean it’s not like a 114 win team lost to an 89 team or something like that.

Good job, Yankees, and good job overall Girardi.

Disappointing ending to this season, but overall a fine two years.

    • Big Bertha

This was NOT a good year. It’s WS or bust for the Yanks, that’s just the way it is. This season is a failure.

They’ve sucked since the All Star game.

  • ZZ

Many of you do realize that the players AND Girardi can be at fault.

This is baseball. It is not an either/or. It never is.

The comments about Girardi not being able to perform for the players, or sarcastically it’s Girardi’s fault when a player doesn’t perform are incredibly stupid.

The Yankees are not performing this game AND Girardi managed the situation horribly.

    • Hughesus Christo

No, it’s 100% Girardi or 100% ARod. Strawmen are the balls.

    • All Star Carl

You’re not gonna win hitting as bad as the Yankees are with RISP. The Rangers are hitting 200 points better.

    • DOOM & GLOOM

What did he do that was so horrible? Really?

    • CP

Girardi hasn’t made any stupid moves. Just because the players haven’t performed doesn’t mean he made the wrong move.

      • ZZ

Are you not watching the game?

This is an elimination game and for the 2nd time this series he managed it like a regular season game.

Leaving Hughes in was incredibly stupid, just like leaving AJ in was.

Bringing in Robertson who has been throwing batting practice into the biggest spot in the game was incredibly stupid.

Joe knows how much he fucked up with Robertson. That’s why he got Wood up right away after Robertson predictable got hammered.

He had zero feel for the game, unlike Washington.

    • http://www.theyankeeu.com/author/steve-s/ Nostra-Artist

Name me one area of this team that has performed well this series.

      Rotation, Bullpen, and Lineup.

      • ZZ

One of the major confounding reasons the starting pitching numbers look so bad is that Girardi left Hughes twice now and AJ once too long.

All 3 of those games were winnable, especially AJ’s start which was unbelievably pathetic managing to go down in flames with one of the worst starters in baseball.

You also never know how the offense plays different if they weren’t down 4 or 5 runs every fucking game, because the starters were left in to implode.

        • Hughesus Christo

Reactionary clutching of Girardi to the collective teat has been wildly entertaining. At least we have that.

How can any of you idiots defend Girardi? he hasn`t done a thing for the Yankees since they got him. He has topped it off with an absolute mediocre performance in October and some of you bozos come to his side? This team will never win as long as that arrogant ass hole is managing.

If you think Montero is some kind of upgrade defensively over Posada, you’re in for a rude awakening.

Everybody stop blaming Girardi. Yeah I hate him and he makes dumb decisions, but these are all star players should be able to execute. Kinda hard to win a series when you have a cast of only 4 players: Cano, Pettitte, Mo, Granderson.

I don’t have the stats this series in front of me but these are who I feel are the culprits:
    1. BABIP bad luck
    2. Phil Hughes
    3. Using Mitre
    4. Mark 0-ALCS Teixeira
    5. A-Rod and his 4 (?) hits
    6. Jeter had a few big hits but could’ve done better
    7. CC was not “ace-like” (or to his potential at least)

How did Mitre affect a game? The Yankees scored 0 runs in that game. How would a different pitcher helped in that situation?

    • King of the Troglodytes

Swisher has to be high on this list. He must have been up with RISP more than anyone else and FAILED miserably.

    • Teatime

The BABIP was definitely a killer. It was like the balls were magnetized to the Rangers’ gloves or something.

  • Andy

    Colby Lewis? Really?

    • Ivan

Meh what your gonna do, shit happens.

I don’t hate the Rangers, not sure who I’d root for in the WS if this goes the way it’s going.

    • Alex S

I just hate that antler bullcrap and Andrus’ lucky hits

      • bonestock94

Yea, Andrus is annoying and I don’t acknowledge the other shit. If the Phillies come back definitely going for Texas. If the Giants win, I don’t know, I like them.

    • JFH

depends on who wins the NLCS. anybody but the phillies. insufferable fan base.

    • JerseyDutch

Giants. Who will proceed to crush the Rangers. Book it.

    • BigBlueAL

I dont root for any team other than the Yankees and I dont root against any team either.

Just watch the WS and enjoy it as a baseball fan, although to be honest by that time the NBA season will have started and with the Yankees out my attention will be fully devoted to the Knicks and the NBA. Although I will definitely be following a watching a bit of every game of the WS for sure.

The quality of the Yankee ABs the last three innings has been extremely low. Royals-on-a-getaway-day low.

That’s alright. Neyer will feel even worse when Greinke gets traded this off-season. Then we can all laugh at him…again.

I don’t know whats more frustrating getting our asses beat 5 times (yes I’m including game one because we were being owned the entire time except for one inning) Or the fact everyone except granderson, cano, andy, wood, and Mo played like they didn’t want to win. This team needs to wake up next year, this makes no sense to be manhandled like this.

I wouldn’t be so mad if they actually put up a fight and made this a tough series but let’s face it, everyone except those mentioned above went out like bitches.

        • CP

    • Murakami

From 1996 to 2009, this franchise has been in the World Series seven times. That’s a 50 percent clip. It’s remarkable. They’ve won five World Series Championships during that run.

They also made it to the ALCS after winning it all last year. If you haven’t noticed, it’s extremely difficult to repeat. Why, the last team who did it was us.

They’re getting beat. There were some decisions made that didn’t come back to haunt us last year, because we were so good we overcame them. There were some this year that were strategic blunders we couldn’t overcome.

I, for one, don’t want to hear about their salaries. If you could throw a 95 mph heater or drive the ball, you’d be making that kind of money. No one cares – or rather, I don’t – about your petty resentments.

What I am thinking as I watch this is: is that the last time I’m ever going to see Rivera pitch?

I sure hope it’s not the last.

way to paint a broad stroke. is that what you are about? blanket statements about an entire group of people. who the fuck are you?

        • Murakami

          Margaux, they’ve got a point.

There is a modern Yankee fan who is just soul less. Of course there are exceptions. But there is too much garbage for too few gems.

Going to the Stadium as a season ticket holder, and reading the fan-boy threads with all their masturbatory anti-jeter, anti-Posada drivel, indicts them and they deserve the criticism.

          • Margaux

Yes I agree. Some modern Yankee fans are spoiled and reactionary. However, some are thoughtful and understand baseball and its history. Blanket statements that indict an entire group of people are ignorant and infuriate me. “I fucking hate the modern Yankee fan” this is a prime example

            • Murakami

At least, though, that comment is derivative anger.

It’s frustration with people who are turncoats and frontrunners. Those people frustrate me, too. The exceptions know who they are.

My Dad saw Ruth and Gehrig play when he was five years old. He and my aunt would flash their sweet smiles and the construction guys working on the place would always help them sneak in.

I think he’s right when he says the Texsas team plays baseball. Executing. Hitting, running, fielding, bunting – contact, ground balls, productive outs, stealing bases, making big pitches, making it happen. Impressive series from them. Yankees just sitting back and waiting for big hits, not getting them, and not pitching well.

A lot of it is overreaction, just like people losing their mind criticizing the people losing their minds. People are upset and not thinking clearly. Let them get it out and get over it. Most people will be more level headed tomorrow.

        • Murakami

And there’s wisdom in this, too.

It’s just unfortunate when pain can’t just be felt and acknowledged, but has to become the worst kind of ridicule. It’s one thing to bemoan strategic decisions that arguably could have cost games. Going over and over and over what might have been.

When people start hating on the older Yankees – I’m not going to have any compassion, sorry. Really – we just lost. STFU about Derek Jeter.

If you have children, I can’t wait for one of them to play a youth soccer game and lose 2-5 because the other team just played a little bit better and you tell your kid that he was “rolling over like a bitch”.

        • King of the Troglodytes

Agreed on all points. All Yankee fans nowadays are whiny little bitches. You guys belong in Queens and Boston, seriously.

(That’s not fair. I’m level headed but in Boston.)

        • Carlosologist

Well you know what I mean. I’m talking about all these “fans” that come here thinking the Yanks are entitled to a title every year. Get some perspective, please.

      • Slappy White

Easy there buddy, Im not whinin

      • Murakami

These are the same jerks who wear those “Do the Math” shirts and wear those gaudy jackets.

I have always steered clear of that stuff. The Yankees are the Yankees – no need for embellishments. The interlocking NY says it all.

These overstatement types are wannabes – they wannabe associated with success, with winning. They’re not people who lived through Horace Clarke and Omar Moreno.

They don’t remember Paul O’Neill’s hand clinging to second base before we went down against Cleveland. They disassociate themselves immediately when defeat finally proves to be inevitable. They don’t remember Rivera saying we had to lose in 2001, because if we had won, Enrique Wilson would have stayed for the celebration party and would have been on the plane to the Dominican that crashed over Queens.

They don’t embrace ANYTHING Yankee that does not end in a World Series. They are fans of winning, not fans of the Yankees.

Why didn’t Andy pitch game 6 and Sabathia pitch 7 each on 3 days rest?

    • http://twitter.com/tsjc68 tommiesmithjohncarlos a/k/a Ridiculous Upside the Elder

Because we don’t have confidence in old Andy Pettitte being able to pitch on short rest, especially since he missed two months with a groin injury.

      It makes sense.

Our season comes down to Grandy, Cano and Alex.

    • Carlosologist

Now down to Cano and Alex. Both had great years, it feels right that it comes down to those two.

  • Ehren

Fellow fans, lose with some dignity: we had a great season. We’re not entitled to win every year, and a season without a ring is NOT a failure. Even though he lost, we have to feel good about Hughes for next year, Gardner was a beast, Swisher continued to be a great pick-up.

I know we’re all frustrated, but enough of saying that 6 games cancels out an entire season. Rangers were the better team this time around. Congrats to them. Yankees fans, prove the haters wrong and lose with some class.

    • http://www.theyankeeu.com/author/steve-s/ Nostra-Artist

I expect the Yanks to make the playoffs, and with their payroll you have to have higher expectations than you would for other teams. So to miss the postseason would be a disaster. After that, it goes like this:

-To lose in the ALDS is a major disappointment.

-To get to the ALCS is a good year.

-To get to the World Series is a VERY good year.

-To win the WS is a great year.

      • poster on another computer who happens to be a deuce bag

Agreed. We had a good year.

      • Murakami

Yep. Getting to the ALCS after winning the whole thing a year earlier, and nearly winning your division before being beaten out in the last week of the season – in the best division in baseball – is admirable.

Especially when you have an older team. You pay the price when you go all the way. How well have these older players held up? Last season, I knew early we were going to win the whole thing. It gave me such satisfaction, because I was calm and could savor it as it unfolded. It was particularly dear because the old Core Four guys were going to spit in the face of the calendar and pull out one more.

I can’t even relate to the ugliness in here regarding these players. Really, it makes me kind of sick to my stomach.

  • Andy

The stadium is going to go extra nuts if Alex makes the last out.

It was a great season. Playoffs started out great and this series didn’t go our way. We did some things right, a lot of things wrong and the breaks didn’t go our way. Last year, Damon got a double steal that helped us put the nail in the coffin and A-Rod hit a camera. Without either of those things, maybe the series lasts a little longer or (God forbid) goes the other way. The HBP that wasn’t seemed good at first but may have hurt us more than it helped us. Oh well. Goodbye 2010, hello 2011.

    • tom

Yeah: going into the playoffs, I said it wouldn’t surprise me if they got knocked out in the first round. Unless you win the World Series, you end up the season bummed, but the later you face that feeling, the better things have gone.

Finally. Given they we were outplayed this entire series, losing doesn’t feel as bad.
