NLDS Game Thread: Reds @ Phillies
ByAs a reward for getting no hit by Roy Halladay, the Reds now get to face Roy Oswalt. Sounds like fun. Bronson Arroyo (hah!) goes for Cincy. Good luck with that. This one starts at 6:07pm ET and can be seen on TBS.
Beyond the game, use this as your open thread to talk about whatever.

Over/under .5 hits for the Reds today?
The Reds legitimately have no pitching.
LESS PITCHING THAN THE YANKEES!!!!!!!!!!!!! ZOMG REALLYYYY!!!
It’s not that they have no pitching, it’s that they have a really young inexperienced staff.
4 starters under the age of 25, but then they have Arroyo and Harang.
Volquez is only 26 too. Hmmm
What’s with Utley throwing balls away early in the playoffs? Didn’t he go through this last year?
I would enjoy the Phillies struggling if it wasn’t Arroyo, ick.
You don’t like Arroyo?
http://jamaicanbraids.com/Gall.....royoRedSox
End of story.
Ew.
I really hope the Phillies don’t make the WS and someone like the Reds or Braves do.
Yes, the best path is the one of least resistance.
The Giants would be a tough match up with their pitchers, but their line up can be pitched to.
Agreed. One [umpire-aided] run against Derek Lowe and the Braves bullpen.
Teams don’t need 5 or 6 runs to beat the Giants.
Which would you guys prefer in a best of 5 series:
Winning the first 2 games on the road, then coming home for 2 games.
or
Winning the first 2 games as home, then going on the road for 2 games.
?
No doubt, come back home 2-0.
I was talkin to one of the clubbies today, and he said Minny is walkin around the locker room and behaving like they’re at a funeral.
Well, it is only 24 hours or so until the service starts.
Since this is an open thread:
Zajac-Parise-Kovalchuck: 2, dalls Stars 0.
Stil 12.20 in the first to go.
The Canes and Wild are playing in fucking Finland. The early start times are screwing over my fantasy team. I lost out on two assists, four PIM, one power play point, one hit, and nine fucking shot on goals from Mikko Koivu over the last two days because I didn’t set my roster on time. Bastards.
Not complaining to you, just bitching in general.
It’s okay, I understand.
Also I wanna go visit Finland. Saunas.
Hey Mike, tell us how you really feel.
Watching a lil NCAA Hockey tonight. New Hampshire @Miami. So pumped for it to start again
Wisconsin is going to suck this year without Stepan and McDonagh =(
I should have picked up James Neal for tonights Devs-Stars game, since he is still available. Somebody picked up Jordan Eberle before the Oilers game yesterday and got lucky.
…and though I am a Rangers fan, thank you Kovalchuk for your 2 assists!
ot: from Buster Olney
“From Ron Gardenhire: Joe Mauer talked to the Twins right after Game 2 loss, in an effort to help them turn the page on another loss to NYY.”
wonder what kind of crazy shit they’ll do before game 3, thoughts on what Gardenhire will burn before this game?
They should eat more fried chicken
/wadeboggs’d
Did you all see that Gammons unwittingly disproved “clutchness” and/or “rising to the occasion in the playoffs” today?
http://tinyurl.com/29x47ut
Basically the column is that Jeter and Pettitte treated the post season like a regular season game which makes them play to their ability in the playoffs.
Isn’t just as likely, or more likely, that given a season’s worth of playoff games almost all players would produce to their season averages?
As the great Yogi Berra once said, “They are who we thought they were”*
*I know Yogi didn’t say this, but it’s so Berra-esque I think one day people may attribute it to him
Denny green man
I guess the Reds didn’t get the memo that they’re supposed to get swept…
No kidding. Oswalt has thrown his fair share of hittable pitches though.
Melky hitting 5th tonight, in a playoff game. 5th.
Hahahaha..that gave me a good chuckle.
Wow, that’s just… wow.
Well, since we got a Top 5 Cy Young finisher in the deal it’s only fitting we gave up a middle-of-the-order bat in his prime.
I was just thinking that’s like the opposite of our situation last night where we had a guy with 350 career home runs hitting eighth…
The Brian Cashman All-Stars, yo!
Of course that idiot Cashman gives up a middle-of-the-order bat for “Home Run” Javy Vasquez. Stupid!
It’s amazing, for a playoff team, how many below average players they have. Losing Chipper and Prado has to really hurt.
Alex Gonzalez 83 ops+
Melky 83
McClouth 69
Ankiel 78
All but McClouth are in tonight’s lineup.
OMG MELKY!!!
I was just looking at a random Twins blog – just to know what it was like, you know, losing? – And it’s this hilarious mix of tear-jerking pessimism and laughable rose-colored optimism.
How many people said we cheated last night on Berk’s (not) strike three call?
As you could probably guess, a huge amount. Even on the news this morning during sports, that was basically the one highlight of the game that they mentioned.
Remember when Arroyo looked like a fruit cake with those stupid corn rows?
Sitting between Varitek’s legs getting them done.
You know, even if Sabathia pitches Game 4, he can start Game 1 of the ALCS on 4-days rest.
Haha that was a funny joke about the Yankees not totally pwning the Twinkies tomorrow.
I did not know that. That’s reassuring.
Good to know. Now let’s hope they shut them down tomorrow so we get plenty of rest for everyone.
It’s crazy that they’d get 5 days of rest if they sweep.
Do you think they’d play a couple innings of an exhibition game just so they don’t get rusty? What’d they do last year?
Probably just workouts for the position players, bullpen sessions for the starters, etc. I don’t really remember what they did last year. Knowing Girardi, he’s prepared for every contingency.
NL baseball, yall.
It’s like watching Little League.
I kid!
It’s not going to happen unless the National League installs a third place series, but I would chuckle at a Lowe-Arroyo matchup in the 2010 postseason.
Infield defense herpderp like yeaaaahhh
Massive choke by Cincy.
Making mistakes against Phillie is almost as deadly as making mistakes against the Yanks… almost.
On 2 routine plays. Phillips diving like hes Pedroia instead of getting in front of it.
Scott Rolen just booted it.
Eh, they got out of the inning with the lead. Though it could get interesting if Cordero comes in if it’s still 4-2…
Yep. Can’t keep it this close. At the same time they do get to attack the Phils Bullpen. Gonna be a fun few innings here.
did anyone see those double Roybow shirts? i have to admit i lol’d
http://i54.tinypic.com/v2qmqc.jpg
Er… I want that five seconds of my life back.
I noticed that during the game last night and was horrified.
It’s really disturbing and only adds to my strong dislike of Phillies fans.
nice pickoff
lets see some Cuban rockets tonight Dusty
Stubbs should talk to Gardy about being patience.
patient***
“Dusty Baker” and “Strong Bullpen”
Interesting.
Geez, more sloppy defense.
I hope Rhodes pulls through here, he was the Yankees’ b-tch for so many years that I think he deserves a good playoff moment for once.
And he drills Ruiz. Not good Arthur!
Poor Choooooch
CLEAR THE BENCHES!
Who’s head does Cueto have to kick to get some respect around here? =P
This is kind of a mess. And by “kind of,” I mean “really.”
I do not like this, Reds. I don’t like it at all!
new prediction: Javy to the Reds in 2011
he’d fit right in
They only hit two guys in an inning. Javy would be resented because he’s such an over achiever.
/low blow
The most annoying thing “Victorino gets an RBI the easy way!”
It’s harder to get a walk than to get a hit.
I hate announcers.
No… just no.
Can they please shut up that one whistle aaaaahhhhhhh
I know. I have the game on in the other room and I can hear that damned whistle.
Hankie wavers…
Fans shouldn’t need props to be excited about their teams. And definitely not scraps of fabric. That goes double for thunderstix.
OMFG, AROLDIS
I can’t wait to see Champman…Over/under 7 100+ MPH fastballs.
I should have posted this in the BA Top Prospect thread, but I was late to the party, so let’s rewind 5 years and take a look at the 2005 BA Top Prospect list for the AA Eastern League.
*Has played in major leagues
1. *Francisco Liriano, lhp, New Britain
2. *Lastings Milledge, of, Binghamton

19. *Paul Maholm, lhp, Altoona
20. *Franklin Gutierrez, of, Akron
HOLY TALENT BATMAN!
(I stole the list from soxprospects.com, Papelbon sux lol wutevs)
Eric Duncan was clearly the crown jewel of that class.
Portland was friggin’ stacked.
Is it physically possible that a lefthanded batter can turn on a 100+ MPH fastball from a left handed pitcher?
…This is such a mess. And random Jeter mention.
102 miles to the hand and almost no reaction?
mph not miles
A ball that travels 105 mph through a distance of 102 miles is disgusting. Chapman must have released it at 135 mph if it kept that pace up.
Not a guy you want to be hit by.
PS. Will they ever shut up about Jeter’s acting?
Not a guy you want to be hit by.
So it’s probably a good thing Utley wasn’t
Truth, but still that would have done some serious damage.
not even fair…lol
That was embarrassing
That Chapman/Howard matchup result was totally predictable but kind of awesome to see nevertheless
As a baseball fan I’m happy he with the Reds, but as a greedy Yankees fan I wish they didn’t pass.
Dreaming CC, Lee, AJ, Hughes, and Chapman. Andy retires.
Rolen on floor, laughing my ass off.
RoboUmps.
That replay did nothing. You can’t even tell if he’s actually safe or out.
LMAO!!!
Ho-lee shit the Reds are terrible.
Ooof.
LOL. Reds suck.
Worst. Defensive. Play. Ever.
Wow the Reds suck.
/SSS overreaction
That. Is. So. Sad.
As a Cardinals’ fan, to the Reds. As a baseball fan. Blegh.
When did the 2006 Tigers take the field?
So Umpires trying to screw with as many games as possible this postseason…
Wow. Just wow.
I didn’t want to laugh at you, Reds, but you’re making it difficult.
I am sitting here crying in laughter. I mean, what else can you do? There are actual tears in my eyes.
I cried laughing as well. That was just too hilarious, just all around failure on their part.
I kind of wanted to hear the Benny Hill music.
Someone really needs to take “highlights” of this game and put them to that.
I’m working remotely tonight so I’m listening to the Reds radio feed online. The announcers were just in disbelief.
I’m sorry, that was fairly hilarious.
TBS: Very Funny.
IETCVM
A horrible implosion.
Oh! youth
4 errors? That’s Cervelli-esque.
Alright that was uncalled for. I’m sorry.
That’s game 2 of the double header vs the Sox-esque.
I want to cheer for the Reds; I really do. But…they’re playing such unsound baseball.
…like not going home with that to get the force at home, and save a run.
At least those were innocent errors. Nothing like this:
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/articl.....8;c_id=was
Wow, that was pretty disgraceful.
Funniest play of the year in my opinion.
That and Cervelli slipping on a bat while trying to catch a popup and falling a month ago.
He’s such a hard-nosed player. It’s totally understandable.
is this better or worse than when Matt Holliday tried to catch the fly ball with his crotch last year?
…what? Please, give me the details. That sounds hilarious? I’ve never heard that before.
Remember last year’s playoffs? Matt Holliday had an easy pop-up on what would have been the last out of a 2-1 game against the Dodgers, but it like… rolled off his crotch. Dodgers came back to rally.
Haha. That’s pretty funny.
http://www.atssportsblog.com/m.....rror-video
It was hilarious.
Haha what a loser.
Even though he’s actually good. Whatever.
I did that once. I was playing catch with my friend, and the ball goes over my head (I’m short) and hits a tree. I didn’t even see it bounce or anything, and the next thing I know, I had it right between my legs.
What a mess.
OMG take this poor kid out. They’re going to ruin his psyche.
This Phillies team is actually rather impressive. They looked kind of dead back in interleague (the last time I paid serious attention to them) but they’re kind of… rocking it…
A Yanks-Phils WS would be pretty entertaining, but as a Yankees fan I would really like to see the Phillies put out before then.
Do the Phillies have any runs that aren’t un-earned in this game? I can only think of one off the top of my head.
That whistle is driving me crazy!!!
Fact: Charlie Manuel = creepy.
Also, if this game isn’t over by 9:30,what channel are the Giants and Melkys on?
I’m assuming it will be on TNT
Cano has spoiled me. I feel like every other second baseman doesn’t throw the ball properly to first base. The motions aren’t smooth enough.
Fact: Cano = best second basemen ever. in 2010. ever.
Reds looked much better when they got no hit.
IETVM
It’s true.
Pretty amazing that there is no instant replay in this sport. What a joke.
On a note related to this game, my brother’s kid has a tee-ball game tomorrow morning.
Werth almost lol’d that ball. What’s going on tonight?
Fact (seriously though): Of the 6 runs that the Phillies have, only one of them was earned.
One.
83% of the runs the Phillies have right now are unearned.
And that one earned run scored because of two walks and two hit by pitches. So they really haven’t ‘earned’ any of their six runs.
I don’t want to sound like a jerk, but I really hope the Phillies don’t even make it to the WS. Their fans annoy me. And I would like nothing more than to see their hearts shatter.
Yeah I probably sound like a jerk right now. Sorry everyone.
The Reds gave this one away. I was so hoping to see the Yanks meet the Reds in the World Series to get revenge for the 1976 Big Red Machine slaughter. But it ain’t going to happen. Plus I didn’t want to see the Yankees face the Phillies.
I like the Yankees facing pitchers they’ve seen before.
They’ve seen Oswalt?
And we don’t necessarily know that the Yankees are going to the WS.
Remember that combined no-hitter against the Yankees in like, 03? Oswalt started that game before he left with a groin injury.
Oh, and fun fact: Jeff Weaver started that game for the Yanks.
Yup, they’ve seen Oswalt. They’ve played the Astros in interleague, so he’s faced them at least once or twice. They didn’t this year though.
I’m just saying.
Right now, the Reds have more errors in this game than Cano had in the entire season.
Just pathetic. Sad to watch. And they have been a great defensive team this year. I think it comes down to sports psychology. They just don’t feel like they deserve to be here, let alone win . . . Just like the Twins don’t feel up to beating the Yanks.
Disagree. Not about sports psychology at all — though making errors can be demoralizing — but about who the better all around team is, and right now, that’s the Phillies. You have to be able to play defense, hit, and pitch in order to win games. The Reds haven’t been able to play clean D.
Game over – Series Over.
Reverse lock?
