Open Thread: Comment registration and editing

By

Since the three of us started River Ave. Blues and the site and its community began to grow, we’ve tried to add various elements to the site to make it user-friendly. We started with the straight forwarding commenting form and added threaded comments for RAB’s first birthday. We’ve since branched out to Twitter and Facebook and launched RAB Tickets earlier this year.

This weekend, we soft-launched a new feature: optional commenting registration. For over three and a half years, frequent and infrequent RAB commenters have had to put in their information every time they want to comment, and we’ve depended upon the honor system to keep commenting handles in check. Now, you can register for the site and stay logged in. As a bonus, those who register now have the ability to edit their comments for three minutes after posting.

In terms of details, this is an entirely voluntary feature. You don’t have to register, but you can’t edit your comments unless you do. To register, you need a valid e-mail address. It can be an anonymous one, but you must be able to receive e-mails at this address to complete the registration process. We’re not going to use your e-mail address for any reason other than to communicate with you personally if necessary, and we won’t be harvesting or selling e-mail addresses. To register, click here. Once you’ve registered, you can sign in right here or by clicking the link above the “submit comment” button beneath the commenting box. And please register with your own unique commenting handle and not someone else’s.

For the editing process, just follow the prompts on the screen. We’d prefer that people edit their comments for egregious typos and spelling mistakes, but we realize that some people will try to change what they say. That said, three minutes is a lot shorter than you think. As we fine-tune this system, we’ll look to add more features for registered users only. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me via email.

Now, enough of that site administration stuff. Unfortunately, because the Padres lost, we don’t have baseball until Wednesday afternoon. We do have the Dolphins and Patriots squaring off on Monday Night Football. So feel free to use this as your open thread tonight, and I leave with you quite possibly the most amazingly terrible or terribly amazing video around:

  1. This commenting thing is really cool but you really suck Ben lol whatevs

  2. Tom Zig says:

    Terribly amazing.

  3. Stats’ o the day:

    Seattle Mariners: .339

    2010 OPSes

    Francisco Cervelli .694
    Seattle Mariners .637

  4. Carcillo says:

As we await the 2010 playoffs and what they will bring for the Yankees, time to take a brief look back on their ’09 playoff season.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veHCxYI9iGs

Yes, I’ve posted that once before, in God knows what open thread. Best montage on Youtube from what I’ve seen. Compact, too. Oh, and look at who they played in the ALDS.

  5. Jerome S says:

    That’s a really awesome video.

  6. J.R. says:

I like the upgrade to the site. A good compromise for those who wanted editing function and those who opposed mandatory logins.

  7. Sam P. says:

    Guys, that’s great. Well done!

  8. Jose the Satirist says:

Is there going to be a more convenient login button added somewhere?

  9. Mike Nitabach says:

    I vote for amazingly terrible!

  10. larryf says:

I do not want to see Austin Kearns in the post season. No editing necessary.

  11. ShuutoHeat says:

    Done and done.

  12. Legit concern: Derek Jeter since June 12th has hit one outside of the park home run. One.

    • Carlosologist says:

It’s a Monday night, so let’s talk about something: Where will FAs go make money this offseason?

Cliff Lee to Yankees: We’ve been after this guy for quite some time. We were in on him at 2009 deadline, the 2009 offseason, the 2010 deadline. You see the pattern, no? He’ll probably make his long awaited pinstripe debut after getting bags of money thrown at him. Contract: 5/110

Jayson Werth to San Francisco: Let’s face it, the Giants have had a bottom half offense since Barry Bonds left town. Their outfield has pretty bad range (They have Pat Burrell and Jose Guillen at the corners. Any ball that gets over their head is a triple or an inside-the-parker.), so Werth would be perfect for them. He provides middle of the order power (which in all likelihood will go down in AT&T) and solid defense from all OF positions (Career UZR/150 at LF, CF, RF: 12.9, 6.9, 10.5). Plus he’s a veteran. The Giants FO loves that shit. Contract: 4/70 with a club option for a fifth year.

Carl Crawford to Anaheim: Pretty much the same situation as San Francisco. The Angels had three DHs play in the OF at random points in 2010. They moved Hunter to RF and put Peter Bourjos, known noodle bat, in CF. This creates a hole in LF. Crawford can step right in and make that outfield so much better. Arte Moreno isn’t afraid to spend money, so Crawford could be playing in LA for the next chunk of his career. He also fits in disgustingly well with Sciosiaface’s patented Angels Baseball. Contract: 5/100

      wtf reply fail.

      • vin says:

I like the Werth to SF thought. I have no idea if they intend to spend that kind of dough, but it makes sense. He definitely has the ability to drive the ball out of that large ballpark. Even to right-center. The Giants are a weird team… I can never get a read on what they’re going to do on the FA/trade markets.

Also, I wonder if Crawford goes to Boston. They could definitely use a guy like him at the top of their lineup. I’d hit Pedroia and Crawford 1&2 with Ellsbury 9th. Of course they still have Cameron under contract for next year (I believe its guaranteed). Of course Crawford in LF at Fenway significantly negates his defensive value. Fact is, he really would weren’t with the team.

I don’t, however, think he can earn 20 mil/year for any team. Especially if the Yanks are actually out of the running.

        • Hughesus Christo says:

Werth seems like a prototypical Giants FA signing in that he’s right on the edge of his decline. Crawford would be a MONSTER in that ballpark.

        • Carlosologist says:

I bet if the Giants make it deep into the playoffs, ownership will expand payroll. They have about 20M coming off the books, so I think giving Sabean about 40-45M to spend is reasonable.

    • first time long time says:

      A sudden drop in power?

OMG HE WAS ON STEROIDS IN THE FIRST HALF!!!!11!!!1

      (Yes I’m joking).

  13. larryf says:

Robbie turns 28 on Oct 22nd. Love that #!

  14. JobaWockeeZ says:

So if you register you lose the option to put a URL on your handle?

  15. So, i’m a Jets fan. Who the bloody hell do I root for tonight? Besides mass chaos?

  16. I’m missing the “you suck but lol whatevs” meme.

  17. So I started Vick over Brees yesterday and he got me a cool 2 points. I still won though so its all good.

    • Hughesus Christo says:

Mike Vick is playing like his character in Madden ’04 but he’s a sociopathic puppy murderer lol whatevs

  18. That video made me laugh wayyyyyy too hard

  19. Doh’Mar Minay’Uh currently has no position within the Met’s organization. How would everyone feel about bringing him aboard as a scout for the Yankees? I think it would be a great idea, as long as the only thing he does is scout, and has no FO power. Get it done Cashmoney!

  20. first time long time says:

That video brought back happy memories from this season. It’s too bad we suck at scoring runs now. lol whatevs

    Did I do that right?

  21. Steve O. says:

First registered comment, let’s see how this goes…

  22. Dream of Electric Sheep/ still haven't register /too lazy says:

I heard about Minaya being let go today… What kind of grade would you all give him for his tenure with the Mets?

      • JobaWockeeZ says:

Call me crazy but I don’t think he did an average job. 2006 was great but with a high payroll like that I don’t see the many mediocre seasons an average job.

I don’t think Minaya is an idiot though. It’s being in NY and in the Yankees shadow where the presumption is free agents, free agents and free agents. And with the Mets looking for a veteran GM I believe he’ll fail for the same reasons.

    • Thomas says:

      I’d give him an A+.

Though my Mets’ grading curve is shifted tremendously due to Vince Coleman throwing a firecracker at fans and Tony Bernazard taking off his shirt and challenging minor leaguers to a fight.

    • Dream of Electric Sheep/ still haven't register /too lazy says:

B , He had largely kept the Mets franchise competitive except the last two years where he had been riddled with injuries.

I like the Beltran signing along with Delgado trade. He made the wrong evaluation on Perez but did not have financial wiggle room to recover as oppose to the Yankees. I think he is a good talent evaluator overall.

    • Jerome S. says:

Well the teams performance under him would merit an F but that’s unfair, because obviously it’s not his fault.

      %78.8729910. That’s his grade.

  23. Jerome S. says:

Alright. Let’s see how this thing works.

Cool shit man. Now I’m editing myself. I feel… alive.

  24. Jerome S. says:

So, since this is about commenting, I’ll ask: How do I bolden words or italicize them, or cross them out in that jackass kind of manner?
    Anyone?

  25. Hughesus Christo says:

    ESPN just broke the news…

THE ISLAND RETURNS NEXT WEEK! Howeva, Incarcerated Bob disagrees. What do I do? What do I do????????

  26. Kevin in Princeton says:

I’m ready to enjoy the new features!

Edit: I am currently very much enjoying the new features! Thanks guys, awesome job!

  27. Carlosologist says:

    Someone broke the HTML.

  28. first time long time says:

Why is everyone writing in bold? ps posada sucks lol whatevs

  29. JobaWockeeZ says:

    LOUD NOISES IN AUTO BOLD!

  30. Pete says:

I’m going to call this comment…SUPERMEME:

hey guyscool site this fun huevos no shitter haveyz no good ny cuz he es loco softeeeee GO YANKS win da 29_# swish sucks lol whatevs es no good hitter average is just walk no steals liek wall street obama goldman and w.h. taft cuz cashmans a fucktard es no drat hellicksonn.

  31. vin says:

    Did that fix it?

  32. Ok. I think that’s fixed now.

  33. Carlosologist says:

    I think so.

  34. Maybe the Patriots should trade for Vincent Jackson so they can move Randy Moss to cornerback.

  35. JerseyDutch says:

I posted this before but it looks like it got lost in the chaos: Just reading that Johnny Damon will definitely not be re-signed by Detroit. Do you think we’ll try to pick him up cheap for a one-year deal?

  36. OK, now that we’re back I’ll ask this again.

Who’s the next Mets manager and GM?

  37. Joey says:

Just testing out the new registration. And Mike, when will we be getting the final e-mail for the Granderson charity thing?

Edit: oooohhh it has a countdown. Fancy

  38. Oh snap registration. Cool beans.

  39. Pablo Zevallos says:

    Awesome stuff guys!

    (Editing just for kicks)

  40. JobaWockeeZ says:

Damn it Brady I need points from Hernandez and Welker. DON’T GIVE IT TO MOSS THOUGH.

  41. JobaWockeeZ says:

Use your fucking arm Brady kthx.

  42. Steve H says:

So I was at the Giants game last night. That stadium is ridiculous.

  43. I sometimes wonder if Tom Brady regrets signing an extension with a franchise that seems not to understand the value of a running game to mute a passrush.

When did Bill Belichick become Mike Martz?

    • Steve H says:

They actually run the ball ok, just by committee.

2009: 12th in league in yards, 10th in attempts
      2008: 6th in yadrs, 4th in attempts
      2007: 13th in yards, 10th in attempts
      2006: 12th in yards, 6th in attempts

  44. Kiersten says:

I have such mixed emotions about that video.

  45. Waaah it won’t send me my email.

  46. Steve H says:

Brandon Meriweather is actually playing well tonight. This doesn’t happen often.

  47. While driving to class, Michael Kay was discussing whether or not the Mets would turn down a GM’s idea of trading David Wright. My first thought was “Well, isn’t Wright one of the only good things in that organization? Why would they hire a guy who planned to move him (barring some crazy ridiculous package he could get, which he may not)? He’s easily the team’s best player and can only help going forward.”

  48. first time lawng time says:

Anyone know how to write text, but with a link in it?

  49. Steve O. says:

I only need ~54 points from BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

    In fantasy football, of course.

  50. Steve H says:

Chad Henne is not ready for prime time.

  51. jay destro says:

    BOMBEROO MY BALLS

  52. Anybody interested in bringing aboard Chris Young (SP) from the Padres as a possible innings eater next year? (Thanks to Mike’s article on MLBTR)

    CC-Lee?-Young?-Hughes-Burnett

    CC-Young?-Pettitte?-Hughes-Burnett

  53. BigBlueAL says:

Just saw Harold Reynolds say he has a feeling AJ Burnett will pitch Game 2 or 3 in the ALDS and called him the key to the series.

  54. first time lawng time says:

I nominate this as the comment of the year.

So funny, can’t even get over it. (No offense to the commenter).

  55. first time lawng time says:

Watching WS Game 6, and LOL at Chan Ho Park coming in in a meaningful game for the Phillies.

  56. Accent Shallow says:

Remixed John Sterling > real John Sterling

  57. Daft Punk says:

michelle tafoya in HD =/= ideal….

  58. Total Dominication says:

    From Robbie’s wiki page:
“It should also be noted that Cano is the absolute coolest player in the league, possibly in Major League Baseball. such a stud. He had better be named AL MVP”

    Wikipedia is always right.

  59. Dela G says:

so i bought a bed from bedinabox.com and it’s coming in on friday. anyone used their beds before? i got the 11″ pacbamboo one

  60. JM says:

Zomgz first registered comment for me!
Edit: Forgot the “new meme”: Granderson worst trade evar lol whatevs
    (amidoinitrite?)

  61. Jerome S. says:

Cervelli on steroids. I want to see it, because I think it would be hilarious.

  62. Steve H says:

I had a huge lead coming into tonight’s game. Of course my opponent has the Pats D/ST. Shit.

  63. Ross says:

“We’d prefer that people edit their comments for egregious typos and spelling mistakes…”

Can you guys find some college kid to copy-edit your posts for $0.05/hr or something? I know you probably hear it enough, but not coming across the various typos that the three authors leave would increase the quality of the site way, way disproportional to the effort required to do so.

Please don’t construe this as mean-spirited in any way. I know this isn’t any of the author’s full-time job. It just appears to be low-hanging product enhancement fruit.

  64. bonestock94 says:

I hope I do well on my tests tomorrow but finance sucks lol whatevs

  65. Ellis says:

Testing out the new login commenting system – glad to see the site keep improving!

  66. Brian in NH says:

    works! yay
