Baseball America has started posting their top ten prospects lists for all 30 teams, starting today with the Orioles. They’ll be posting the Yankees’ list on Friday, so get ready for that.

AzFL Phoenix Desert Dogs (3-2 loss to Surprise)
Brandon Laird, LF: 0 for 4
Austin Romine, C: 2 for 4, 1 K – they stole three bases off him in three tries, including one by Graham Stoneburner’s brother

No pitchers. Lame.

Is romine really the defensive specialist we thought he was?

    • http://twitter.com/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

He was never a defensive specialist to begin with. His glove is merely average but it allows him to stick at the position.

He was supposed to have a cannon of an arm. Think he was a bullpen closer in H.S.

Jesus has a killer arm too but he still is a bad catcher.

outside of the First 30 games of this year (every stolen base but 4 or 5 occured right here, 4 of his errors, and 13 of his 15 passed balls occured at this time) Montero actually did well his other games at catcher this season.

      • Shaun

Well he seems to be getting run on more than Montero

    • Ed

Back in ’07 and ’08 Romine actually had worse passed ball and caught stealing rates than Montero. I haven’t seen newer numbers so I don’t know if that’s still true.

The big difference is in their body types. Romine has a traditional catcher’s build, so he’s expected to improve with experience. Montero is much larger, so as he fills out with more muscle it’s likely that he just won’t have the maneuverability to play the position well.

      • rbizzler

Yeah, i think that body type has played a role in how Jesus and Austin are perceived behind the dish. Earlier in his MiLB career, scouts thought he ‘looked’ like a catcher (and should develop accordingly), while Jesus is a beast.

It seems as though Romine’s D has not developed as planned and he needs to get after it if he is going to be COTF.

      • Samuel

Joe Mauer is bigger than Montero and he looks pretty good back behind the plate.

    • pat

While he’s no Pudge back there in the minors most of the blame falls on the pitchers’ inability to hold runners on. They’re focusing on ten different things and usually keeping the runners close is tenth.

      • Shaun

I heard that the yankees don’t really encourage there pitchers to learn the pick-off game. That could contribute to some of the almost insane amounts of steals

    • MikeD

I would not make any interpretation of SBs against Romine (or any catcher) in the Arizona league. Means very little.

      • Samuel

Romine is a little tired and all three stolen bases were on pitches low and away, outside the zone.

  • rbizzler

Is Davis Stoneburner a legit prospect? I mean, he has put up a 289/362/483 line in MiLB although he looks a little old for AAA.

    • http://www.twitter.com/deanezag Zack

He had 6 ABs in AAA, that triple slash line comes from A+ ball, as a 25 year old.

      • rbizzler

I know that he is a bit old, but that doesn’t answer the question of whether or not he has a future in MLB.

  • bottom line

Stoneburner is definitely legit— just overshadowed right now by some others in system

  • bottom line

    Graham Stoneburner, that is.

    • Brian in NH

      this…

  • Samuel

Craig Heyer three shutout innings today in AFL. Ground ball, ground ball, ground ball…..

ManBan looked good, too. Touched 94 and worked corners real well.
