Yankees interested in J.C. Romero

Via MLBTR, the Yankees have expressed interest in free agent lefty reliever J.C. Romero. The 34-year-old spent the last three-plus years with the Phillies, but he’s battled elbow and back issues over the last two seasons. He’s also walked (42) more guys than he’s struck out (40) since 2009, and lefties have gotten him to the tune of a .362 wOBA during that time. Given the injuries and declining performance, I sure hope the Yanks don’t sign him. At least not to a guaranteed contract, anyway.

    funniest yankees rumor yet.

  2. AJ says:

God he’s had a high walk rate for the last…every year.

Egads. This can’t be true. JC Romero is no good. There are better options than this aging, arthritic dud.

  4. The Yanks shouldn’t be slumming at this point of the off season. It’s like going home with the ugliest girl in the bar at 8 o’clock. At least wait until 3am to do something like this.

With Cashman’s new habit of hiring the injury prone, Romero’s a lock for pinstripes. I’m also in favor or re-signing Matsui for DH over Posada or Thames.

Ah, but it’s not just injury-prone, it’s injury-prone-yet-effective-when-healthy. I could probably walk fewer guys throwing lefty than Romero. And I’m a righty.

If we’re offering the old invite-to-Spring-Training, then sure. If it’s anything guaranteed, then pass. Until and unless Downs, Choate, Feliciano…pretty much every other effective lefty reliever comes off the board, I don’t want Romero signed to anything guaranteed.
