Death of a Dream: Randy Choate signs with the Marlins
BySigh. Free agent lefty reliever Randy Choate signed a two year deal with the Marlins this afternoon, landing a $2.5M total salary plus incentives according to Kenny Rosenthal. Choate, a former Yankee, was the best free agent LOOGY on the market when it comes to actually getting lefties out. I mean, who wouldn’t want a left-handed reliever that held left-handed batters to a .235 wOBA with an 8.9 K/9 and a 64.5% ground ball rate in the AL East over the last two years?
I guess we should all look forward to watching Pedro Feliciano‘s homerun rate regress when the Yanks inevitably sign him.

Yikes didn’t know Feliciano’s HR rate was so far below his average. Maybe if he isn’t allowed to pitch against righties, like at all, it won’t be so bad…
I’ll miss him more facing the Yankees than I’m sad that he’s not on the Yankees, honestly.
You saved me from writing the extra characters, amen!
Choate is so crappy even Curtis Granderson can hit him. In the new statistic, CPNMWSS (Can’t Play No Matter What Stats Say), he rates a very high 44.0.
wait…so your argument is that, despite getting lefties out at a prodigious rate, he can’t get lefties out?
I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt here and say this is confirmation bias. The Yankees crushed Choate this year. Like, really crushed him. Ten runs in two innings crushed. He gave up 11 the rest of the season to everyone else.
ERA against the Yankees: 45.00
ERA against everyone else: 2.32
Well, that’s just lovely.
If we use Feliciano just as a LOOGY and not a set-up man or long reliever he should be okay. Feliciano is not that bad guys.
There is literally nothing out there on the FA market.
Joe Beimel (34)…meh
Brian Burres (30)…eww
Tim Byrdak (37)…eww
Bruce Chen (34)…eww
Pedro Feliciano (34) – Type B, offered arb…I guess
Randy Flores (35)…meh
Mark Hendrickson (37)…eww
Ron Mahay (40)…no
Will Ohman (32)…meh
Arthur Rhodes (41) – Type A, not offered arb….hahaha
J.C. Romero (35)…ew
Bobby Seay (33)…meh
Scott Schoeneweis (37)…hahaha
Taylor Tankersley (28)…at least he is youngish, that’s the only thing going for him.
Randy Williams (35)…meh
Good thing the Yankees actually have multiple good options in their bullpen, and several more in the minors.
CHOATE SPURNS YANKEES FOR MARLINS!!!
Leaves 50 million on the table!
UH, honestly, its a LOOGY. All they need to do is get 1, ONE, lefty batter out…sign rhodes or beimel. but it’s not going to decide the pennant
Rhodes? HELLLL NAWWWWW
He’s a type A, and he is basically as ancient as a dinosaur.
Wasn’t offered arb though.
Here is an interesting trade candidate: Craig Breslow

Against lefties he is: 26IP 17H 9R 8ER 3HR 8BB 26SO
My former high school teacher helps him out in the Strike 3 Foundation, too. So it would be pretty cool if he was a Yankee.
Another trade idea though I have not looked at the number closely: Tony Sipp
Come to think of it Tony Sipp isn’t that good, but oh well, options are options.
I still really, really don’t want a bullpen with two lefties, so i take this as one more victory. Maybe the Yankees will give up.
Why not? Logan is no sure thing, Marte isn’t coming back any time soon, and the minor league options are not that great.
I think two lefties brings out Girardi’s overmanaging worst. Multiple relievers going 1/3 of an inning, lefties relieving lefties, quick pulls on the starter, it just gives me a headache.
Just imagine the binder!
the horror…the over-managed horror.
The visual of Girardi hovering over his binder with his face painted รก la Marlon Brando in Apocolopyse Now is quite entertaining.
Good old Randy Choke. He and Ted Lilly nearly threw away the 2000 AL East title. I wish he’d been pitching for the Marlins in 2003!
Thank god he signed elsewhere..choate would have brought back nightmares of mike myers
Yankee Offseason Targets:
Carl Crawford
Scott Downs
Cliff Lee
Randy Choate
well this is going well. Only two real decent LOOGY’s left in Fuentes and Felicano. Sigh
