Diaz joins the Pirates
ByWell, so much for that idea. Matt Diaz signed with the Pirates most likely because they offered him a two-year deal. Guess the Yankees will have to look elsewhere for a righty platoon outfield bat.

Either Scott Hairston or a return to Mr. Thames? I’d be fine with either.
Thames signed in Japan
Or did he? I know I saw reports that a japanese team was working to sign him a month or so ago, but I can’t find any confirmation that he signed. mlbtraderumors.com’s free agent tracker doesn’t say anything either.
A two year deal and the expectation of reasonable playing time. Can’t argue with that.
Oh well.
Scott Hairston, come on down!
Manny, Manny, Manny, Manny
To do what? We have a DH. We need a righty platoon who can play non-atrocious defense.
Not getting my hopes up regarding Hairston. Much like Diaz, I’m sure a crappy team is willing to give him more playing time than the Yankees would. It’s hard to sign competent bench players in the offseason because of that. Reserves on good teams are often qualified to be starters on bad ones.
What about Andruw Jones? He has power, draws walks, is obviously nothing like what he once was defensively but is still at least average, and OPS’d .931 against lefties last year with 8 home runs
So far the most action has come from the National League’s little teams, the Pirates and the Nationals
He’ll be traded for David Phelps by mid may.
I hear this Marcus Thames guy has pretty good power and seems to hit lefties. Not sure if he could handle the pressure of playing in NY.
We need an actual OF though. Posada is our DH and he is also hits lefties well, ditto for Montero.
The team wasn’t comfortable with Thames in the OF last year I don’t think they would be this year. Besides he’ll make a lot more money going to Japan.
Is Thames still out there?
I need an excuse to say ‘Scotty Bro’ again! Please sign Scott Hairston!
Yea with Diaz off the market Scott Hairston is the best fit for 4th OF. He historically hits lefties well. He’s coming off a poor year and is due for a bounce back (enter Kevin Long). He can play all 3 OF positions and 2B in a pinch.
Unfortunately like Diaz there may be a better opportunity for him somewhere else.
So signed with Yanks other top affiliate.
Probably wanted to go there because he’ll get playing time and he knows if the Yanks need him then he’ll be traded there.
Jorge Vasquez is the right hand bat off the bench!
