Open Thread: Charlie Hayes
ByI dunno why, but I’ve been on a bit of a retro kick of lately, hence the recent Mike Mussina, Jimmy Key, and Darryl Strawberry posts. Anyway, everyone remembers Charlie Hayes for that moment right there, the final out of the 1996 World Series, and I suspect he’s perfectly fine with that. It’s easy to forget that Hayes was a fine player for a lot of years though. He put up 2.6 fWAR for the Yanks as their regular third baseman in 1992, and almost a third of career 14.0 fWAR came in pinstripes. Hayes’ big year came with the Rockies in 1993 (after they grabbed him in the expansion draft), when Coors Field helped him hit .305/.355/.552 with 4.1 fWAR. It’s all about that catch though, when you hear the name Charlie Hayes, you can’t help but put a smile on your face because of that weak little foul pop-up.
Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, here’s your open thread for the evening. We’ve got not one but two football games tonight. The regular MNF game has the Ravens at the Texas, but the Giants are also playing the Vikings in Detroit because the Metrodome roof collapsed yesterday. That game will air on FOX in the Tri-State area. The Isles are also in action. Go ahead and talk about whatever you want, just be cool.

I’d like @cephster to repeat what he said on Twitter about how Brian Cashman should respond to the next Cliff Lee inquiry
And since today is a bust I will no longer follow this CLiff Lee debacle. He’ll probably sign one week before Pitcher’s and Catchers Report at this rate.
Now there’s a mystery team Lee supposedly loves? Yeah it’s best to completely ignore anyhting Lee related.
That mystery team that Lee loves and has a 5 year contract from sounds so appealing.
Word is the so called “mystery team” is the Phillies.
He’ll probably sign one week before Pitcher’s and Catchers Report at this rate.
Considering that so far he has not signed, wouldn’t “this rate” lead you to believe he will never sign?
That guy wearing the Yankees hat right between Hayes and Jeter kinda looks like Ben, no?
Conclusive proof of time-travel.
I was 13 and with braces when this happened. Talk about awkward teenage years.
I was ten, not yet even old enough for braces
I was nine; I remember watching on the floor in front of the TV in the living room with a Yankee-hat-clad teddy bear. I fell asleep at some point, and woke up during the celebration.
I was drunk.
Well done. Oh, and it’s official: student teaching at GHS. Any teachers whose coffee you want me to spike?
Spike all of the coffee.
Congrats!
The teachers who I liked probably already spike their coffee, so I guess no.
Although if that guy Mazmanian is still there, kick him in the nuts for me.
Same here, nine years old, fell asleep and got woken up right after they won.
OMG we’re like twins.

Mostly just 13 was the awkward teenage years. On retrospect, I was otherwise fairly comfortable with teenage years/high school. I made some good friends and saw the Yanks win the World Series four times while in high school. Tough to beat that.
My High School years were 84 – 87.. You win.
I was at a bar in New Paltz, New York I waited 18 years for that moment I will never forget that championship it will always be the best one for me.
Hey, what bar?
I’m pretty familiar with that area. I try and head to Bacchus when I can, since they have 300 beers. . .
P&G’s
I went to college in New Paltz LOVED IT. I still go up there once a year for my Frats anniversary great college party town.
Cool. I used to date a girl at SUNY NP, so I spent many an evening there — a couple years after you, though.
SUNY NP any young man wet dream.
When i went there it was 5 to 1 female to male ratio.
Love those odds.
LOL
That’s the only one worth going to if you want to actually talk to the people you’re with. I also love the large number of beers that they have. I’ve tried some great stuff there.
Holy…
when you hear the name Charlie Hayes, you can’t help but put a smile on your face because of that weak little foul pop-up.
Jets tripping coach suspended? Meh should have gotten fired.
I think the Dolphins should have thanked him. If he hadn’t been tripped, then Carroll would have gotten ANOTHER 15 yard penalty for not coming back in bounds on a punt.
Was there another DDoS attack an hour, or so, ago?
Host says not a DDoS attack but another firewall-related issue. They’re working to beef up security now.
If you have a log of the attack you should file a complaint with the IC3 and get the FBI involved.
Apparently we’re closing in on a deal with Russell Martin. Does this mean the end of Cervelli? (extremely excited)
Not necessarily. He could still be the back up, with Montero starting the year in SWB.
OMG, Cervelli WON’T DIE!!!!! >:(
Don’t get too excited now. Martin was essentially 2009 Cervelli for two years straight.
2010*
As long as that fistpumping asshat is off the field, I take whatever production Martin gives us.
I don’t like Cervelli much either but it is hilarious how quick people are to turn on players.
I was alright with him in the beginning, but it slowly progressed to extreme hatred when he started stinking up the place.
But can play good defense and isn’t completely overexposed in 130 games. Cervelli is fine for 30 games, not 130.
There’s also a chance, however remote, that he returns to his previous form now that he’s had the hip surgery.
That too. The upside is All-Star catcher. Cervelli’s is likely solid backup.
Exactly. It’s a relatively safe roll of the dice.
You realize that Cervelli being ‘completely overexposed’ was a better hitter last year than Martin was over the last two seasons.
And he’s not coming off of a torn hip labrum.
When I said completely overexposed I meant as a 130 game full time April to September catcher. Cervelli started 80 games last year. Let’s hope we never see him approach 130 starts, and truly, let’s hope we never seem him approach 50 starts.
I think Martin will be an upgrade over Cervelli, but not by much. There’s really no evidence that either of them can hit in the majors.
Except Martin was a good hitter at one point, Cervelli never was. Martin’s pretty good defensively too IIRC.
yea but is he worth that much more money ? its league minimum vs what ? 5 million ? and upside. i dont know. tough call
Close to signing, or still being aggressively pursued?
I heard on MLB Tonight that Martin was close to a deal. Might still be in the aggressively pursued territory.
From what Jack Curry said on the YES Network’s Hot Stove show, it sounds like Cervelli is a long shot to be with the big league club in the spring. Dunno if they’re going to dump him completely, demote him or try to trade him.
Centerpiece of a deal for Greinke*.
*it’s Dayton Moore, worth a shot.
Could also mean that Lee’s not likely to sign with us and that we will likely have to deal away Montero in a big-time trade.
This made no sense at all. We kinda have to act while we wait or else all our options will disappear.
LEAVE CERVELLI ALONE!! http://bitURL.net/aujq

What’s with the guy in that picture between Hayes and Jeter that’s just looking the other way?
Braves fan?
Ben
Looks like he’s holding a camera on his right shoulder. It’s probably still focused on the batter.
Maybe not, can’t tell.
It is a camera man’s spot, and they need a shot of the pitcher when the game ends.
I think you’re right.
Damn, in 1993 Hayes hit .338/.387/.601 at Coors.
I remember, after his decent year in ’92, being really upset that they left him unprotected and the Rockies took him in the expansion draft.
Then they signed Wade Boggs and I didn’t care anymore.
Coors didn’t open until 1995. They played in Mile High Stadium before that.
To be picky, it was at Mile High Stadium.
I lose.
Interested to see how Matt Schaub does… I have him and Rodgers for QBs.
look at the guy directly to the left of jeters hip
“ehhhhh don’t hit me foul pop up … “
Not as great as this one:

That just made my night. Thank you.
Could it really be this hard to decide which 100mil plus offer you’d like to take and with which team you’d like to play? I wonder what we don’t know, like maybe he thought he’d be a Yankee, but Tex offered way more than he expected?
Or is Braunecker just trying to get a higher bid still?
Or is Braunecker just trying to get a higher bid still?
Yes.
I don’t understand cause for the past two years it’s been all about him wanting to hit free agency and cashing in. Well, he’s a top pitcher in the game, he’s had to have known that the Yankees would want him and pay him the most money. He should have known for a while now if he wants to be a Yankee or not.
Basically, a top 5 pitcher saying he wants to hit free agency translates to “I want to see how much the Yankees will offer me to pitch them to the World Series.”
I love how every Philly fan is like, “HALLADAY/LEE/OSWALT/HAMELS/GREINKE WE WILL BE UNBEATABLE!!!” Yeah well, guys, you still wouldn’t beat the Boston Supergreatestteamevah so what does it matter.
I would like to officially request the Red Sox change their names to the Boston Master Strokes.
the Thirty-Eight Ace’d Master Strokes Superdynasty.
(They used to have only 25 aces until they dumped that dead weight Casey Kelly.)
They could have moved Blanton instead of Lee, got Halladay, and picked up Oswalt at the deadline without significantly increasing payroll (I believe)
Now that would have been a rotation.
This would never happen, but that really would be a team of FIVE ACES.
A Halladay-Lee-Oswalt-Hamels rotation would be insane, but keep in mind that this rotation lost in the NLCS.
That’s 135 starts, more than 7 innings per start, and a 3.02 ERA/1.087 WHIP.
Any by 3.02 I mean 2.80

If Lee goes back to Philly, I’m dropping my flags and moving to Philadelphia.
/half serious
If Lee goes back to Philly after all of this I will never, ever, ever, ever, ever stop laughing.
Cliff Lee thread now up.
Did Cliff Lee sign yet?
I still can remember Girardi running around third with the go ahead run and how piss off Maddux was. Totally love it I was still bitter over Maddux fucking the Yankees as a free-agent.
Joe Buck..”Hayes waits..the Yankees are champions of baseball”! I will never forget that moment.
The next day we played the Jacksonville Jaguars and I sacked Mark Brunell. Our POS coach(Dave Shula) was fired on that previous Monday and Bruce Coslet came in and we won that game.
Take a look at my sack as it was one of my few moments in the NFL:
Maybe Cliff and Kristen are not in agreement on where they will spend the next 7 summers. Cashman’s quote today to Kepner “He’ll make up his mind someday” really exhibits how frustrated Cashman is by this situation. He rarely injects such sarcasm into his comments to the press.
I was at Game 1 of the 96 World Series. It was a Sunday night game there was an awful storm in the area and doubt whether the game would be played. Great electricity in the air and then unfortunately the game started. Jones’ 1st homer brought us down to earth and home run number 2 was crushing. After being outscored 16-1 in the first two games and heading down to Atlanta for game 3, the most optimistic Yankee fan would not believe that the Braves had won their last game of the year.
I’m surprised RAB hasn’t made a thread about Matsui’s signing with the A’s. Just a quick one ala Melky.
We will when it happens.
Can’t wait to find out who still thinks the Yankees should have resigned him.
I love this retro kick. I remember so little about the 90′s teams, that it’s nice to be reminded of those really special, completely amazing moments I experienced as a kid.
Next thing we’ll hear is that the next myserty team is the damn Vikings.
Jacobs, motha fucka.
This Lee saga will be over within the next 24 hours, I’m thinking the Philly thing was a little too ridiculous and it’s down to the wire now.
Cliff Lee better still be worth it in year 3 after all of this.
The next 24 hours? I kind of expect humans to be living on the Moon by the time this guy makes his decision.
So when do the yankees actually make their first move? Lee shouldn’t be hamstringing them, this offseason has been so boring for the yankee fan.
Heard This:
How the hell would the Phillies afford Lee?
I can’t imagine that, though that rotation would be other-worldly if they did get him.
Someone has to have made this joke by now but I found a Brett Gardner biographical movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qo-RDJb4W28
Hey, since this is an Open Thread, and I don’t have the Giants broadcast in my area…is Justin Tuck not playing tonight…I don’t see his name in the stats.
No he’s playing.
Lee signed with the Philles. Its over for us.
