Calcaterra: ‘Very strong possibility’ Pettitte pitches in 2011

By

Update (5:22 p.m.): Via friend of RAB Craig Calcaterra, a source close to Andy Pettitte says there’s a “very strong possibility” that the big lefty will pitch in the upcoming season. Andy is reportedly doing his usual preseason routine to stay in shape and hasn’t any physical issues, a big plus. The stuff about Roger Clemens’ federal trial supposedly isn’t a factor in Pettitte’s decision either. According to Jon Heyman, the Yanks will offer Pettitte $12 million to pitch in 2011.

Earlier today, former Yankee Morgan Ensberg teased that we “wouldn’t believe” what he just found out about someone with the Yanks, and that he’ll announce it on XM MLB Radio tonight. There’s no reason to assume it’s related to Calcaterra’s report, but Ensberg and Pettitte did play together for three years in Houston and then for a season in New York. Let your mind wander at your own risk.

Wow this is great news. The offseason is a lot better if they sign Pettitte.

  2. pete says:

I still haven’t forgiven Morgan Ensberg for hitting 36 home runs that one year. That might have been even more offensive than Bautista’s 54 last year.

  3. Jake LaMotta's Left Hook says:

Stop toying with my emotions Andy! Come back! :’(

  4. The Big City of Dreams says:

“I have to check with my lawyer before I release this. It will happen tonight on Sirius XM MLB Radio”

    http://twitter.com/MorganEnsberg

why would he have to check with his lawyer if it’s about Andy coming back. Then again maybe he’s just joking about the lawyer part.

  5. The Big City of Dreams says:

Or maybe he’s just trying to drum up interest for his show

  6. pete says:

**starts to dream again about a rotation of CC, Hughes, Pettitte, AJ, and Joba, cries self to sleep, cursing Morgan Ensberg and Craig Calcaterra**

  7. David says:

That would be no surprise. He has plenty left. It is a perfect fit, and most of all the Yankees have acted that way all along, holding onto prospects instead of using ample excess resources to add a starter.

  8. RL says:

This is the reason the Yankees haven’t made a big pitching move. They knew he’d be coming back!

  9. Skip says:

That second Twitter message was rather ominous…I hope it’s not a negative story…

  10. The Captain says:

I’m trying to temper my excitement about this latest update, but Pettitte deciding to come back would be great news for the rotation and the Yankees for 2011.

And it would help stop everybody from spending their time questioning/bashing everything Cash says and does.

    • CS Yankee says:

      Jete is that you…?

Get you butt outside and hit another bucket of pearls with Long so you can regain the two-hole and RAB-sters can just complain about the 2B-side glove and the unnecessary jump-throws in the hole…

& quit GIDP’s, you overpaid, overaged, overhyped shortstop.

    • CP says:

And it would help stop everybody from spending their time questioning/bashing everything Cash says and does.

People will bash Cashman no matter what he does. If he wins a WS (or four) people will say it’s only because of the money.

    • Jerome S. says:

I KNEW you were the guy from AB4AR!
I just want to say, awesome blog. I’ve been reading since June.
I haven’t been able to tell you any other way.

  11. pete says:

I don’t think this is what it will be, but just so that if it happens I can be the first one who said it, Morgan Ensberg will tell us tonight that Derek Jeter took steroids.

  12. TopChuckie says:

CC has a long lost sister his mom put up for adoption 50 years ago.

    /thunder stolen

  13. Clint Holzner says:

It could definitely just be to get interest, name dropping the Yankees always attracts attention.

  14. CS Yankee says:

The only reason why Pettitte is coming back is to keep Colon from getting another CYA.

    /xfiles&grassyknolltheories’d

  15. pete says:

    Let’s play the guessing game.

My revised guess is that Brian Cashman takes steroids.

    Go.

  16. Tom Zig says:

Come back to us you butt-chinned lefty!

  17. FIPster Doofus says:

Ensberg: Sergio Mitre is the Antichrist.

  18. AndrewYF says:

Wasn’t there a rumor that a Yankee was bisexual? Not that it’s at all interesting, but I guess I wouldn’t believe it if, say, it turned out to be Posada.

    Or Mike Harkey.

  19. Jess says:

Funny people mentioned steroids. There were whispers about Morgan Ensberg even though he denied ever using them.

  20. mbonzo says:

This might have something to do with Morgan Ensberg’s tweet.

  21. mbonzo says:

Woah a Jon Heyman update! Was it Mike or Joe that pointed out the anniversary of his resigning? They were spot on.

  22. bexarama says:

~my hopes are so high that your kiss might kill me, so won’t you kill me, so I die happy~

  23. Avi says:

$12M for Soriano, $17M for Jeter and $12M for Pettitte. Funny.

    • Zack says:

There goes the “Yankees are going chepa so Hal/Hank can save their own money” narrative.

    • CS Yankee says:

If he comes back for less money than AJ averages a year it will be based upon the Ninja signing him and would be considered by most, below market…

On the other hand, if he comes back for 20M$, he will have had to have lunch with Levine or Hank and be viewed as more like Clemens (man-whore).

I’m not sure lunch with either of those two is worth the extra 8M$

  24. Clint Holzner says:

Morgan Ensberg: “I’ve gathered you all here today to announce that Andy Pettitte and Roger Clemens both used HGH. I know…I know…let it sink in. Just remember I broke this story.”

    • CS Yankee says:

I thought that Ralphie & Clemens only had B-12 shots via ‘jada & mac, and that Bonds just rubbed on some Flax-seed oil?

  25. CBean says:

Okay, this is killing me. I mean, I keep trying to get resolved to no more Andy Pettitte and then I get my hopes up all over again. I’d be so happy if he came back.

  26. Pasqua says:

I’ve never been more excited to sign a guy who will most likely spend time on the DL this year. (And I’m not being sarcastic.)

  27. Erica says:

I JUST WANT ANDY BACK OKAY?

Sigh. We need him. Bexy needs him too.

  28. Xstar7 says:

#46 MUST COME BACK! The Yankees dont need him but it would help out a lot with our unstable rotation.

  29. Yankeefan91 Arod Fan says:

Comeback petttite please lol are rotation would look so much better.

    Sabathia
    Pettite
    Hughes
    Burnett
    Colon

  30. bonestock94 says:

If Pettitte is back and reasonably healthy, they are totally in it. The #5 slot was basically useless in 2009 and 2010, and they were competitive to say the least.

  31. Jorge (México) says:

Ensberg will say “Mariano Rivera is not from this planet”

    As if nobody knew that

  32. BPDELIA says:

Best case is Pettite and Justin D.

    Sabathia
    Hughes
    Pettite
    Burnett
Justin D (and then after his injury NOva, Brackman, Phelps Noesi)

    Mitre
    Chamberlain
    Logan
    Feliciano
    Robertson
    Soriano
    Rivera

    Plus one.

With that pitching staff and the offensive and defensive team the yankees have they are a 90-99 win team and easily contenders for the division.

  33. Corporate Scum says:

    Morgan Ensberg is an asshole.
