Russell Martin ‘still not 100 percent’
ByVia Erik Boland and Brian Costello, new catcher Russell Martin told reporters after today’s pre-camp workout that he’s still not 100% recovered from the hip injury that ended his 2010 season in August, though he hopes to catch tomorrow and is expected to be ready by Opening Day. Martin suffered a hairline fracture in his right hip when he stepped on home plate awkwardly, however there was no damage to his labrum and he did not need surgery. He also told reporters that he’s shed 15 lbs. this offseason doing MMA training, which has helped his endurance. I know nothing of MMA or the kind of training it requires, but I imagine the hip is recovering well if doctors cleared him to do that.

So….is this good news or bad news?
Still not healed = bad
passing physical = good
training in MMA = very good
mira cabron…
Cabron y todo? I like!
He just needs to hang on until late May.
Jesus is coming.
Maybe Alfredo Aceves will try and get back into shape by MMA training. It sounds great for your back, collar bone and shoulder.
In all seriousness, I assume, it was MMA workouts that he was doing, and not the actual combat. That would be outrageously dumb for someone recovering from injury.
It says MMA ‘training’, not ‘fighting’.
Yes. This is my point. I assume there are many forms of MMA ‘training’ that involve various levels of physical combat/contact. And I also assume that he took part in none of them.
maybe Ace already did that because the Red Sox signed him. Heard Aceves will fight Martin between innings when we play the Sox XD
How do you pass a physical and not be healed? And sign a 5,000,000 contract? I guess we shall see!
See Brett Gardner at the beginning of the year.
Because they can put a timetable on certain injuries
Assumption of future healing based on past experience? Like if you have the flu during your physical, the doctors can be pretty sure you’ll shake it down the line. If you’re missing an arm, well, you’re in trouble.
but not necessarily if youre missing a hand….
I guess this means that our pitchers will be ok pitching inside with Russell the Muscle behind the dish.
Fight! Fight! Fight!
Thats awesome, MMA fighters have some of the best cardio in the world. As long as Martin’s hip is recovering then why do some MMA training?
I meant why not do mma training…dammit
MMA training…nice! Good to have a catcher with some MMA training when the yanks need to brush someone off the plate.
can’t wait for the first bench clearing brawl!!!
This is bad news.
How bad? Time will tell.
Great news for Montero though
FWIW, the ESPN Ny blog quotes Martin as saying the hip isn’t the problem, it’s the knee he had minor surgery on in December. Range of motion is the issue there. It’s also encouraging to hear he got to Tampa a few weeks early.
