A fine night of pitching on the farm

By

In case you missed it earlier, the Yankees announced that Kevin Millwood’s next start will be in Triple-A, plus Cito Culver also sat down for an interview with Jonathan Mayo. Old pal Eric Duncan has caught on with the Double-A affiliate of the Cardinals after being released by the Rockies in Spring Training, so good for him. Kei Igawa moved up to Triple-A Scranton and will start for them later in the week. They’re still short some arms with Lance Pendleton and Hector Noesi in the big leagues.

Triple-A Scranton (5-2 win over Lehigh Valley)
Greg Golson, CF: 1 for 5, 2 K, 1 SB
Kevin Russo, 2B: 1 for 4, 1 BB, 3 K – four for his last 11 (.364) after that horrible start
Jesus Montero, C: 0 for 5, 1 K – just his second hitless game of the year … still hitting .404 though
Jorge Vazquez, 1B: 0 for 4, 1 R, 1 K
Chris Dickerson, RF: 3 for 4, 2 R, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K – six for his last 11 (.545)
Justin Maxwell, LF: 1 for 4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K – eight for his last 18 (.444) with two doubles and three homers
Brandon Laird, 3B: 1 for 4, 1 2B, 1 K
Dan Brewer, DH: 2 for 3, 1 R, 2 SB - six for 13 (.462) with three steals in limited playing time
Ramiro Pena, SS: 1 for 4, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 K
David Phelps, RHP: 6.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 1 HB, 7-2 GB/FB – 61 of 95 pitches were strikes (64.2%) … best start by a SWB pitcher this year? probably
Andy Sisco, LHP: 0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K – all three pitches were strikes
Buddy Carlyle, RHP: 1.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 1-1 GB/FB  – 18 of 25 pitches were strikes (72%)
Kevin Whelan, RHP: 1 IP, zeroes, 1 K, 1-0 GB/FB – eight of 13 pitches were strikes (61.5%)

Double-A Trenton (2-1 win over Richmond in ten innings, walk-off style)
Austin Krum, LF: 2 for 5, 1 R, 1 RBI – eight for his last 18 (.444)
Jose Pirela, SS: 1 for 5, 2 K
Austin Romine, C: 3 for 4, 1 RBI, 1 BB - walk-off single … six for his last 16 (.375)
Bradley Suttle, 3B & Addison Maruszak, 1B: both 0 for 3, 1 BB – Suttle whiffed
Cody Johnson, DH: 0 for 4, 4 K – yikes
Melky Mesa, CF: 1 for 3, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB
Corban Joseph, 2B: 1 for 4, 2 K, 1 E (fielding)
Manny Banuelos, LHP: 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 4-4 GB/FB – 42 of 64 pitches were strikes (65.6%) … first start back from the blister, plus he didn’t have a normal Spring Training since he was in big league camp the whole time, so he still needs to get stretched out
Naoya Okamoto, LHP: 3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 3-3 GB/FB
Tim Norton, RHP: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 1-0 GB/FB
Brian Anderson, RHP: 1 IP, zeroes, 2-0 GB/FB

High-A Tampa (7-0 loss to Brevard County) they ran into a pretty good pitcher tonight
Walt Ibarra, SS: 1 for 4, 1 CS – keeps the hitting streak alive at 11
Luke Murton, 1B, Kevin Mahoney, 2B & Mitch Abeita, C: all 1 for 3 – Murton doubled, drew a walk, got caught stealing, and whiffed … Abeita struck out twice
Everyone Else: combined 0 for 18, 1 BB, 8 K – Taylor Grote drew the walk
Josh Romanski, LHP: 6 IP, 9 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 10-3 GB/FB - just two walks in 17 IP so far
Scottie Allen, RHP: 1 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 HB, 1-1 GB/FB – well, at least the walk was intentional
Kelvin Perez, RHP: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 0-1 GB/FB

Low-A Charleston (2-1 loss to Greenville)
Slade Heathcott, CF: 0 for 3, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB - three for his last 20 (.150), but that’s four straight with a walk now
Anderson Feliz, 2B & Jose Mojica, SS: both 0 for 3, 1 K – Felix drew a walk and swiped a bag
Ramon Flores, 1B: 2 for 4, 1 RBI, 2 K – still has more walks (11) than strikes (10)
Gary Sanchez, DH: 0 for 3, 1 BB, 3 K – look who’s back from the disabled list
J.R. Murphy, C: 0 for 4
Rob Segedin, LF & Kelvin Castro, 3B: both 1 for 3 – Segedin drew a walk and struck out twice … Castro tripled
Kelvin DeLeon, RF: 0 for 4, 2 K
Mikey O’Brien, RHP: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 1 WP, 7-3 GB/FB – 20-6 K/BB ratio and a 24-6 GB/FB ratio in 16.2 IP … very nice
Tommy Kahnle, RHP: 3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 2-1 GB/FB

Gary is just shaking the rust off.

  5. Ben says:

Nice interview with Culver. Seems like a really humble, well put together kid. Gonna be really easy to root for him.

  6. jorge brosada says:

Loving all the Kahnle strikeouts. What’s the scouting report on O’Brien?

  7. Ashmore says:

Video of Romine’s walk-off hit is on the blog and such…so if that floats your boat, go nuts.

  8. dreamer says:

I know he is old with long injury history, but Tim Norton is piling up strikeouts. Can he turn into something?

  9. Grienke vs a High-A team is just cruel

  10. Naved says:

How long till ManBan to the majors talk begin with the way the starters for the major league team doing crap.

  11. Monteroisdinero says:

Manny was good. His fielders were terrible. He threw mostly fastballs and a sharp curve which he didn’t command as well. No changeups that I saw. Great presence on the mound. Okamoto relieved (a loogy!) and did well with less impressive stuff. What’s with these strange deliveries from Japanese pitchers? Melky Mesa burned the bases on a triple to right center. Romine was very good behind the plate-seems like a nice guy too. $11 tix first row behind dugout.

Haven’t seen much of Neil Medchill?
