Game 11: Show me something, Phil

Report: MLB looking to expand instant replay
JoVa homers two more times in SWB win
In addition to being fabulous, Martin's nails help the pitcher see the sign. (via Martin's Twitter acct)

Phil Hughes‘ first two starts this season haven’t been good. In fact, they’ve been awful. He has the highest ERA (16.50) in baseball at the moment (min. two starts), and frankly he’s looked more like a career minor leaguer than a Major League caliber pitcher. He’s done work between starts to help try to find the missing velocity, but blah blah blah, the bottom line is he has to give the Yankees a chance to win tonight. If he can’t, then the next step might be a trip to the (phantom?) disabled list or the minor leagues. Here’s the lineup that will back him up…

Brett Gardner, LF
Derek Jeter, SS
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, RF
Jorge Posada, DH
Curtis Granderson, CF
Russell Martin, C

Phil Hughes, SP

The YES Network will carry this game starting at 7:05pm ET. Enjoy the game.

  • Tom Zig

Phranchise you better come through today.

    • king of fruitless hypotheticals

He’s my #3 starter (…4/5 are two guys from the D-backs, 1/2 are Halladay and Felix). He’s KILLING ME. Well…him and the White Sox’ Thorton.

My stats are a giant bag of wtf.

  • S

ManBan is going on the dl…apparently he also has a blister

  • http://twitter.com/Carlosological Carlosologist

Jeter having to cover short AND third is gonna suuuuuck. At least we’re covered at 2B with Alex and Cano.

    • king of fruitless hypotheticals

its the shift dude. the whole team. watch how this works.

  • mbonzo

    Here we go!

    Manny Banuelos to the bullpen.

Pros: He faces major league hitters, can deal with controlled failure, gets to work with the big guys, Yanks get a damn good arm in the bullpen.

    Cons: Joba 2.0

If some of what I hear is true, I think most of it is just hype, Manny has the stuff to pitch in the majors. I’m still gonna say no, he should be stretched out as a starter this season and if he’s successful they can move him to AAA and then the majors. The Mets had success with Mejia last season in a similar case, but they got lucky he didn’t fall apart being moved between 4 different leagues.

    • squishy jello person

No no no no no No no no no no No no no no no No no no no no No no no no no No no no no no No no no no no No no no no no No no no no no No no no no no

    • http://www.twitter.com/jordansmed JGS

      Cons: currently injured.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

If there was another abused LOOGY out there I will give him a 50 million dollar contract so ManBan doesn’t become a LOOGY.

      • mbonzo

I might think this is a good idea if Banuelos tears up AA and AAA this year. If he is moved to the bullpen at the end of the year as a non-LOOGY, and can get consistent innings, bring him up in September.

    • Teh Comp Pick

      ::::HEAD EXPLODES::::

    • bexy on another computer

No. That would be pretty much a panic move. Also, he’s on the DL.

    • MikeD

Cons: He never gets his innings up to a range where he can ever move into the rotation as a starter.

      • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

This. The Rays for example can get away with Price being in the bullpen for one year because his development is nearly done. Yes he struggled the year after but at least he had no limits. Neither Joba’s nor Hughes’ were closed to being done when shifted in the bullpen.

  • squishy jello person

    C’mon Phil

  • Jose the Satirist

Tulo is on quite the tear. 7 homers already.

    • bonestock94

Him and Josh Hamilton were talking to me during the drafts, but I was scared off by injury potential. Unfortunately I was right about the latter.

  • Teh Comp Pick

Better fantasy catcher standard 5×5: Martin or Sado?

  • Pat D

No long lunch for me today. I’m sad about this.

  • bonestock94

Martin’s hands, aside from the fingernails, look really feminine to me.

    • http://twitter.com/Paddock9652 Stratman9652

Its a mix between the nails and the huge aviators.

      • MikeD

He came from L.A. It will take a while for him to be “manized” again.

    • Jonathan

you can clearly see he shaves his arms/hands. So that’s not helping.

      • Kevin

the dude is gay its that simple.

  • MikeD

Watching MLB Network a little earlier, I’m really tired of Bob Costas referring to “authentic” stats. Yeah, we know Bob, you’re a huge Mantle fan, we all are, but let it go.

  • Mike Myers

Arrieta vs. Hughes. 9ERA vs 16! This is like Halladay vs. Filix

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Go Phil.

  • MikeD

Gawd, we’re going to have to listen to Kay give us radar-gun readings on every Hughes’ pitch.

Dear Phil, please find your velocity to spare us.

  • Kit

Martin is beyond awesome. Also, let’s go Phil. I haven’t been able to watch you pitch this year and I don’t want to be sad.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    92!

  • BigBlueAL

Velocity still not much better but looks like fastball has a little more life on it.

  • Xstar7

a 92 mph fastball from Hughes? GASP

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Changeup, strike three.

  • Greg Golson’s Rocket Arm

Was that Phil’s first 1-2-3 of the year?

  • jdp

no negative comments about gardner from me tonight
i’m just gonna wait for him to start proving me wrong, which i’d love to see
but here’s a philosophical question: when do we stop saying [in general, not just about a particular player] that “it’s early?”

    • http://danielslifka.wordpress.com Jerome S.

      I start complaining in May.

    • CG

I may be on the high end but I’m a patient kinda guy. I give it 6-7 weeks into the season before I start to look at the numbers

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      May for me.

    • MikeD

I usually don’t look for a trend until about 40 games, so somewhere mid-Mayish.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Stupid Vlad. How the hell does he hit that.

  • IRF

    Interesting. A 2 strike hit

  • MikeD

What are those 85mph things? Cutter? Change-up? Don’t tell me fastball.

    • Greg Golson’s Rocket Arm

      Probably the cutter

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

That’s a cutter. The Vlad hit was on a cutter outside that he just threw the bat at.

  • jdp

To those who hate the other team in town [a NY tradition]:
    The Debts got swept.

  • nedro

    nice save, russ….

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Huuughes.

  • Cy Pettitte

Phoul Phil hasn’t made much of an appearance yet, looks like his pitch count is safe….for now

    • Greg Golson’s Rocket Arm

I don’t think the pitch count matters as much, it all depends on performance

      • http://danielslifka.wordpress.com Jerome S.

With Phil? it matters a whole lot.

        • Greg Golson’s Rocket Arm

but who cares about his pitch count if he can’t get outs, first he needs to focus on how to get outs, and then pitch count will matter afterwards

      • Cy Pettitte

I’d like to see him get through the 5th inning on the days he is pitching well, can’t do that when he’s having 30 pitch innings with all those 2 strike foul balls

  • http://danielslifka.wordpress.com Jerome S.

Hughes looking Hughes-ish, so for now I’m happy.

  • JimAbbottFan

This is definitely a more encouraging start for Hughes

  • IRF

Nice! But I think the pitcher gets half a K for striking out Reynolds

  • MikeD

    Fear.

    • http://danielslifka.wordpress.com Jerome S.

      Loathing.

        IETC.

  • Frigidevil

Hahaha who else heard someone yell god damnit after ball 4?

  • nedro

    Just a little patience.
    Yeeeeaaaaah.

  • Skip

At this rate ARod won’t see a pitch to hit from an Orioles pitcher the rest of the year. Hello .500 OBP

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    That’s a shame.

  • IRF

Sterling: “A lot of writers have talked about batting Cano third. And the reason they don’t-Its so obvious! is because you want protection for Arod”

Obviously, if you bat Cano third, you bench Teix

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      But then who protects Tex?!

      • IRF

        Cap’n Jeets

      • http://danielslifka.wordpress.com Jerome S.

        A-Rod; he defies logic.

      • mike c

I like the idea of a-rod protecting tex in the 4 spot… tex sometimes seems like a mistake hitter and having a-rod behind him should get him better pitches to hit

        • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

          If only protecting mattered.

          • IRF

Remember how much Bonds struggled in SF with that weak lineup around him?

          • mike c

well not if you’re the yankees… I feel bad for teams that don’t have unlimited payrolls

    • MikeD

I’d rather have the higher OBP guy with power in the three slot. Even with Cano’s great year last season, I think there’s a better chance that Tex will finish 2011 with a higher OBP than Cano.

  • http://danielslifka.wordpress.com Jerome S.

Damn Izturis and him trading hitting for defense.

  • Esteban

When did this injury occur? Hopefully he didn’t have it when he signed.

    • Skip

Per LoHud, it happened during spring training. Pre-signing MRI was clean.

  • nedro

    whoops…

  • Cy Pettitte

    Phuck

  • Esteban

There’s the ’11 Hughes we know.

  • http://danielslifka.wordpress.com Jerome S.

    Damn.

  • Dice-Klay

They’re no saying booooooo, they’re saying hugh

  • Yankeefan34

    Hughes and that freakin’ cutter.

  • Jake Jarmel

Joe better have a quick hook on Hughes. Colon is ready and the better option to win the ballgame.

    • JerseyDutch

Just as long as no one panics.

  • BigBlueAL

Hughes FB velocity is the big story but his cutter is the pitch that is constantly getting tattooed.

    • Skip

Kim Jones: “Keys are…don’t get cutter happy”

On cue with a single off the cutter.

Starting to think – was the move to the bullpen and learning the cutter from Mo the single worst thing to happen to Hughes’s career. Hamstring injury in 2007 included?

  • Greg Golson’s Rocket Arm

Who’s worse right now, Hughes or Dice-K?

    • Greg

      Dice-K expecially given the money

  • Xstar7

Yankees offense better wake up because Hughes isn’t looking sharp.

  • Dice-Klay

Moral of the story, never sign an ex-Met.

    • MikeD

I wonder who the best ex-Met was that the Yankees signed, meaning production provided to the Yankees.

Off the top of my head, I’m thinking Strawberry.

      • Greg

Gooden pitched a non no with us

        • MikeD

He did, and was a member of the ’96 rotation, but I’m going with Strawberry. Question is, beyond those two, what other ex-Mets are even in the conversation? I’m sure I’m missing someone, somewhere.

          • Greg

            Oh yeah, Cone

      • IRF

Ventura was at the end of his career, but he still had a 4 WAR season with the Yanks

    • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

Never sign an ex-Met? Cone, Strawberry and Gooden disagree…

      • MikeD

Cone. There it is! He’s at the top.

        • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

Heh he’s the one with the perfect game! They still have no no hitters while they have like 5 ex-Mets that did.

          • MikeD

…and I was even at that perfect game. Bitchin’ hot day.

      • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

What about Armando Benitez? Didn’t the Yankees have Jesse Orosco for a little while?

  • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

Curve looks nasty if we try to bring out the positives here.

    • Greg

He’s got to use it more though

  • nedro

jeez, he is really hangin some balls up in there…

    /teabagged

  • http://danielslifka.wordpress.com Jerome S.

that ford commercial is two years old!

  • Cy Pettitte

    no more cutters, ever

that pitch does way more bad than good for him

  • YankeesJunkie

Hughes’s fastball looks better tonight and his curve has nice break, but he can’t locate the cutter. More curve and change and less cutter please.

    • Greg Golson’s Rocket Arm

More cutter and less curve makes Hughes a dull pitcher?

      • YankeesJunkie

No, Hughes can’t locate his cutter for shit and it is getting pounded because it is coming in at 85 mph.

  • MikeD

Oh, for goodness sake. If Joe Torre is the voice of sanity in bullpen pitcher abuse…

    • Skip

Again, I cite LoHud, they have a nice tidbit on it. Torre used to ask his guys if they felt ok. The pitchers would say “yes.” Cashman used to talk to both the pitchers and Torre about not using them so much. Clearly it didn’t take hold.

      http://yankees.lhblogs.com/201.....he-season/

      • MikeD

Girardi charts out bullpen usage, including how many times they warm up. He won’t use them more than a certain number of times, no matter what they say, and I do think that’s one of the reasons the Yankees pens under Girardi has thrived. He keeps them fresh. Of course, his continually warming up of D-Rob this year doesn’t help the narrative.

  • http://danielslifka.wordpress.com Jerome S.

I can’t believe the Yankees are hitless through 3. It doesn’t feel like that.

  • YankeesJunkie

It would be nice to see the Yanks get better contact when they get ahead on the count.

  • Teh Comp Pick

How do folks see the division shaking out now that we’ve had a brief peak at each of the teams?

    • Greg

I really like this Orioles team. If their young starters can get on a roll, they can be dangerous

  • BigBlueAL

Answer to trivia Im guessing an old-school manager. Ralph Houk maybe??

    • MikeD

What was the question? Missed it.

      • BigBlueAL

Which former Yankee manager has the best head-to-head record vs the Yankees.

        • MikeD

Hmmm, Houk went to the Tigers, who really sucked then, so I don’t think it’s him.

          Buck?

          • MikeD

If not Buck, it also could be Billy Martin. I’m going with Martin.

      I love baiting shitty journalists

  • theyankeewarrior

Sorry if this is a repost. Phil’s command has been dreadful tonight. Nice to see him hitting 91. Not so nice to see him hitting the absolute epicenter of home plate. Or miss his spot by 3 feet.

    • BKLYN

For most of his career, this is all i’ve ever seen from Hughes.

Even when he strikes people out, its not cause he hits spots, but because he got away with a meatball cause his fastball had some life. Now that there is no life… he’s really getting spanked and you see his strikeout rate drop to through the floor.

This start is not what I wanted to see from hughes.

  • jon

    hes throwing meatballs

and we were all worried about AJ

yeah, getting out. That’s baseball the right way.

Ugh. This seems like a recent narrative; I wanna kill it.

  • nedro

  • IRF

    The Grandyman!!!

  • Xstar7

    Hughes is garbage so far.

  • http://danielslifka.wordpress.com Jerome S.

Hmmm… well, Hughes is better. Let’s leave it at that.

    • nedro

If by “better” you mean “still shitty” then by all means, let’s.

  • YankeesJunkie

Hughes has zero command of his fastball and considering it is 90 it will not fool many hitters.

  • Jake Jarmel

This should be Phil’s last inning. We can’t afford to fall even further behind which we will because Hughes is getting very lucky. Colon can take us home.

    • JerseyDutch

I bet you $10 Hughes comes out for the fifth… Jar-mel.

    • boogie down

      Where are the exclamation points?

  • Mykey

Well, Phil needs some batting help tonight. Let’s hope we don’t make another nobody look like Cy Young.

  • Cy Pettitte

  • Greg

    Perfect pitch. This kid’s good

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Not really, just having a good night. For whatever reason he kills the Yankees.

  • Mykey

Gardner is the ultimate window shopper. No thanks, I’m just looking.

  • Jake Jarmel

I think we have the worst 1-2 hitters in baseball. Gardner always let strike 3 go by.

    • http://www.mystiqueandaura.com/ JMK

I think you are the best commenter on RAB.

  • BigBlueAL

Well, at least I was right that it the answer was an old-school manager. Just didnt think it was that old-school lol.

  • Dice-Klay

    Holy Cow!

That ball almost made it outta the infield.

    Way to go Jetes.

  • bonestock94

Looked like a vintage jeter hit minus 30 feet

  • BKLYN

I don’t remember seeing Jeter hit a fly ball or line drive in a while…

    • Dice-Klay

I doubt he hits a home run this year.

  • Xstar7

Gardner looking at another third strike. I know it was a changeup but it was right down the middle.

    • Greg

    • http://twitter.com/cephster Ross in Jersey

      • bonestock94

Just making sure you didn’t get it the 6th time hahaha

  • BigBlueAL

Still only the 5th inning obviously but its sure looking like one of those games Yankees arent destined to win.

    • IRF

Any game where Izturis is 2-2 is gonna be tough

  • Greg

    Lookie there Small ball

  • BKLYN

  • oldmanalex

over the monster suggests that boston should give old buddy Pedro “Whos my Daddy?” Martinez a call as an alternative to Dice-K. thoughts?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

That’s probably a bad idea. Pedro was done in the 2009 WS and he hasn’t pitched since. He could probably survive on smarts against bad teams, but that’s not a guy you want to run out there every five days in the AL East.

      • http://deleted JoeyH

Oh god Mike, Remember our radio debate with OTM? We sure got bashed.. Or should I say, I.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

Definitely. It’s nearly impossible to be worse. I don’t think Hughes is at that point yet.

It’s the NL sure and in 7 starts but Pedro had like a 8 K/9 and a 2 BB/9. Ain’t entirely done yet.

Of course I want the Yanks to get more shit to stick on the wall so let’s hope the Sox don’t get him.

      • oldmanalex

at least its them considering Pedro.. imagine if Cashman called him up.

    • Kit

I suggest they do, just to see how hilariously that would end.

One hell of a catch by Swish but Hughes needs to be taken out of this ballgame immediately or we’ll soon be down 6-0.

  • BKLYN

Been a while since i’ve seen a groundball out.

  • http://danielslifka.wordpress.com Jerome S.

    ok hughes. time to gtfo.

  • BigBlueAL

Watching Hughes right now is depressing.

Back to BP. Show me the Colon.

  • Mykey

    It’s shower time Phil.

  • Cy Pettitte

Hughes is getting hit hard, Colon please so we have some chance

  • Jake Jarmel

Hughes needs to be taken out right now or we’ll be down 6-0 soon. Send him down to AAA. We can’t keep trotting him out there every 5 days to get shelled.

    • JerseyDutch

I’m getting deja vu reading your posts.

    • BKLYN

As irrational as you may sound… I some agree. Even if there isn’t an injury, or it isn’t mechanical, this boys confidence is shot. Something needs to be done, he can’t be using in game time to “build” arm strength.

Good move by Joe. Hughes just can’t get people out on the major league level anymore. He needs to be in AAA to get his act together. We have a capable major league pitcher in Colon who gives us a better chance to win.

  • first time lawng time

Wow. The Yankees are sooo good. Losing 4-0 to Baltimore and being no-hit through 4. Great performance guys. Hughes? So happy to have him as a number 3. I mean I don’t mind losing every 5 starts. Whatever.

    • http://danielslifka.wordpress.com Jerome S.

      Think before you talk.

  • Avi

The Yankees are unlikely to make the playoffs if Phil Hughes pitches to a 5.00 or worse ERA. Agree or disagree?

    • http://danielslifka.wordpress.com Jerome S.

      disagree.

    • YankeesJunkie

Disagree, Hughes won’t be pitching for the Yanks much longer if he is only throwing 90.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

They made the playoffs with two guys pitching to a 5.00+ ERA last year, so disagree.

      • Avi

But they might have 3 or even 4 guys pitch to a 5.00 plus ERA.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

They might have 3 or 4 guys pitch to a sub-4.00 ERA too. Who the hell knows after three starts in April.

          • jiffy

We will, but they will be CC, Mo, D-rob and So.

      • http://deleted JoeyH

        The ALCS nonetheless

    • DCBX

Hughes is not on an $82.5M contract and is damned unlikely to be here past the break if he is still pitching like this.

    • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

We made it with A.J. last year, and he and Hughes have basically swapped roles so far this season.

      • Greg

we still need to see Garcia but you’re right about AJ and Hughes essentially switching places. We hope bad AJ doesnt come back

        • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

And even if Garcia sucks, he still equates to the half-season of Moseley/etc. we got last year when Pettitte went down.

    • IRF

Meh, if Burnett continues to pitch OK, and Nova/Garcia pitch to their projections, they’ll be fine. Look at Javy and Burnett last year.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

They’ll make it since the Rays lost Longoria and there aren’t any wild card contending teams that will overtake them barring injury. Maybe the Twins but they always kill them.

However they won’t far unless they trade for a legit number two.

  • CHING CHANG

Best start of the year for Hughes! Yeah!!!

  • Greg

The Yankees really need to acquire more starting pitching prospects. If they do that the next dynasty can begin. I have to say with the ages of Jeter, Posada and Mo that 2009 was the last hurrah for this era

    • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

For this to happen we should pray a world wide draft won’t exist. And hope we don’t spend our first rounders on any type A just because they’re a type A.

    • http://danielslifka.wordpress.com Jerome S.

      ok, so,
who was the Yankees prospect in 1996? Pettitte? Sorry, but he’s a bit overrated. He was essentially Hughes.
SP prospects do not a dynasty make, and they will not with the Yankees payroll.

Also, Phil Hughes is the man and it is retarded to write off a 24 year old after three starts. I mean, Holy shit people/

      • Greg

Pettitte’s a borderline HOF. What the heck are you talking about?

      • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

What? How did this Yankee payroll work in the 2000’s? The pitching all sucked. They relied on expensive veterans that mostly failed.

CC right now looks like the only pitching signing that appears to be worth it and even then we’re in year 3. The Yankees won’t be able to buy every free agent especially with everyone young on a team friendly contract.

Look at the FA list next year. It’s CC or die.

    • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

Teams don’t just give away good pitching prospects. You have to trade some serious value.

      • Greg

        Use the draft

        • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

          See: Cole, Gerrit.

          • Greg

See Jeter, Derek and Cano, Robinson

            • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

Not pitchers. Just saying, it’s not easy, and it’s not like we haven’t tried.

          • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

            See: Betances, Dellin
            See: Brackman, Andrew
            See: Hughes, Phillip
            See: Chamberlain, Joba
            See: Kennedy, Ian

And that’s not mentioning the lower level guys filled with high ceilings. Stoneburner, Mitchell, Marshall, etc.

Chances are someone will pan out. Even if they are a mid rotation starter it’s a success.

  • Monteroisdinero

Roberts and Markakis easily turning around Phil’s fastball. Tough to watch. I feel bad for Phil who is a really nice guy. Don’t know what the answer is but I’m guessing we’ll find out in Scranton.

    • YankeesJunkie

      These are my hopes

      1. Mechanics
      2. Conditioning
      3. Arm Fatigue
      4. Minor Injury

  • Cy Pettitte

    What the rotation should be:
    CC
    AJ
    Joba
    Nova
    Colon

    • BKLYN

Can we get off the Joba to rotation rants. It aint happening… the yankees will never admit they were wrong by making that move

  • theyankeewarrior

Love Girardi for this move. Phil, wake up or go back to the pen.

    • YankeesJunkie

      Part 1 Agree

Part 2: FUCK NO! Velocity drops does not mean you fix it by going to the pen with a 25 year old pitcher!

  • Dice-Klay

Where are all the people who said: “keep Hughes in the rotation – it’s early, don’t panic”???

Time to replace Hughes in the rotation. He’s missing his spots and he’s lost his fastball.

    • YankeesJunkie

Right here. Hughes needs to be sent down AAA until he has his velocity back.

    • Monteroisdinero

3 starts without an injury is reasonable. He won’t be starting now for awhile.

  • Xstar7

    Bartolo Time!

  • Kipper the Dog

Thank god they pulled Hughes. Terrible.

  • jon

if colon has a good game hes starting next time around

  • Cy Pettitte

    Cy Colon’s fastballs are filthy

  • jon

no way would gardner have made that

    • Kipper the Dog

Markasis woulda been safe, good play on the cut-off. Calm down Gardner and learn how to bunt.

  • Cy Pettitte

    that was Manny-like ARod

  • Yankeefan34

    WTF Alex?

  • bonestock94

Man, this is a really distressing development with Phil. Deadarm, new mechanics, phantom DL stints, whatever…..nobody bargained for this shit.

  • first time lawng time

What was A-Rod thinking? Looked like a lack of effort.

  • Kipper the Dog

Hughes to DL and Noesi to rotation. Couldn’t be worse.

  • Monteroisdinero

Jeets with the all out dive to keep the ball in the infield. Pathetic.

  • David

I hope the Yankees come back, but if we’re still down in a couple innings I’d like to see Noesi pitch and see what he can do.

  • Ben

I know the first two innings produced decent results, but I really don’t think there was much of an improvement tonight. Might just be time to send Hughes down and have him work through his issues in a place where he’s not hurting the big league team.

    • Kipper the Dog

Agreed. All the long pop-ups, Swish and Grandy saved XBHs plus he looks like a bad version of Chad Gaudin.

  • Craig

“Are you saying boo or Huuugh-Errrns?” I was saying Hugh-errrrrns……..

    • JerseyDutch

      Classic.

  • Dave

Hughes needs to get to AAA to figure this shit out, if only so he can do it out of the spotlight where every little move is “OMGZ His career is over!!11!!1!”

  • IRF

Alright, here we go. Six solo homers in a row.

    • Kit

      That’s the spirit! =)

  • jorge brosada

Once again Hughes did not show us anything tonight. He’s lucky he didnt get tagged for more runs. This is definitely a problem

    • YankeesJunkie

He showed improved velocity for about one, maybe two innings and his curveball was better. Everything else was terrible. Improvement, but not nearly enough.

      • Greg

        Agreed

  • JerseyDutch

Did I wander onto a Mets board?

    • bonestock94

Nope, when the Yankees are losing this becomes yawkeywayreds.com

  • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

    Rally starter.

  • Jake Jarmel

Girardi and Cashman need to do something. Hughes should be sent down to AAA and Colon in the rotation. Something needs to be done with the lineup, in particular the 1-2 hitters. What good are Teix, A-Rod, and Cano without runners on base? I’m sick of people saying, they’ll figure it out. No they won’t.

    • JerseyDutch

      They’ll figure it out.

  • Cy Pettitte

    holy shit, a hit!

  • Sheepmeister

Do you know how many aces spent a year or two in the big leagues alternating between success and mediocrity until they were top 10-20 in baseball. Lester, Greinke, Sabathia, the list goes on.
Hughes had a breakout year last year, there is tape on him. Yea, his stuff isn’t all there, but keep in mind, he went way above his previous high in IP last year. Yea, he may not be a #2 or #3 this year, but if it takes one year of mediocrity or being below average to keep developing and then come back to be an ace, I would take it every day and twice on sundays. How about instead of being so impatient and talking about sending him to the minors where he would just dominate every start, we let him develop through some adversity. This way we can develop a homegrown ace, which everyone complains about not doing, instead of trading him.

    /endrant

    • IRF

I don’t know if you can call Hughes’ season a breakout. It was his first season as a competent major league starter, but he was far from an ace. Sabathia actually steadily improved every year until breaking out in 06. Its concerning because most of us have seen a lot of Hughes, but he only has half a season as an “ace” to his credit. You like to see your young pitchers make some sort of improvement, not turn into a pumpkin

  • Kit

Alright, Robbie and Alex. Rally time, guys.

  • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

Robbie loves him some Oriole pitching.

  • YankeesJunkie

A-Rod continues on his monstrous tear. He is untouchable.

  • JerseyDutch

    A-Rod and Robbie. Nice.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

So Robbie and Alex are essentially our only consistent offense.

    • Greg

      And Martin

      • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

Oh yeah. But if anyone else would like to wake up that would be nice.

  • YankeesJunkie

Time to for the offense to engage.

    • nedro

      make it so.

  • Xstar7

People are bitching about A-Rod cutting off Gardners throw, but I doubt it would have really beat Markakis. Good job breaking up the No-No by the way A-Rod.

  • Monteroisdinero

Terrible ab by Swish. No excuses.

  • first time lawng time

Rotation until Hughes gets his head out of his ass:
    1. CC
    2. AJ
    3.Nova
    4. Colon
    5. Garcia

p.s. Swisher is pretty shitty on offense lately lol

    • first time lawng time

      agree/disagree?

    • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

If it’s not an injury concern then Hughes has to pitch more. Preferable it has to be in the minors but I don’t think it’s possible anymore.

I’ll give him a start or two before deciding what to do.

  • William

do u think boston would have resigned jeter for as much money or even signed him back at all. All the stats show jeter is def regressing and what were seeing right now with jeter not being able to hit the ball out of the infield something needs to be done.

  • Kit

Gross. Please don’t do that again, YES.

    • nedro

What, with the J. Palmer underwear ad? I think that’s hilarious. That hair! That chin!

      • Kit

It’s terrible. Do not want to see that. Also, I think Al Leiter is the more handsome of the two. Palmer looks like a bear mated with a human.

  • Ben

Arrieta really has been quite fortunate tonight. Lots of hittable pitches that the Yankees have just missed squaring up. Unfortunately they’re running out of time for that good fortune to turn around.

  • YankeesJunkie

Is there any way the Yankees take disguise so A-Rod and Cano continually have at bats.

    • Sheepmeister

And then when both are on base, just make it ghostrunners on first and third

      • YankeesJunkie

Nah, disguise Hughes and put him in the game for Arrieta.

    • Kit

Imagining Cano and Alex in those ridiculous glasses with the mustaches attached made me laugh

    • Cy Pettitte
  • bonestock94

O’s announcers wanted strike 3 loooooooooool

  • first time lawng time

lol we should trade a package of Jeter, Gardner, and Hughes for Longoria, Price, Damon. Move A-Rod to short where he belongs and get Joba’s fat ass in the rotation.

    • asdwd

jeter should bury his head into the sand until he dies

    • Sheepmeister

Will you be paying for the hospital bill that the Rays get for dying from laughing when they hear that offer?

      • first time lawng time

        Yes.

    • JerseyDutch

Why don’t we just ask the Phillies for Halladay?

      • first time lawng time

        Let’s trade Rivera for Halladay.

        • JerseyDutch

Let’s ask them to throw in Cliff Lee while we’re at it.

          • first time lawng time

            Let’s throw in Girardi.

            • JerseyDutch

We’d probably only get Pete Mackanin in return.

              • first time lawng time

If that’s the case, let’s throw in Mick Kellogg.

                • Kit

Who is Mick Kellogg? Do you mean Kelleher?

                  • JerseyDutch

Mick Kellogg. Inventor of the cornflake.

                    • Kit

I’d make that trade. I like cornflakes.

                  • first time lawng time

No. I mean Kellogg. He’s that guy in the stands behind homeplate that steals signs and stuff.

        • Xstar7

Makes all the sense in the world. Phillies need a good closer, Yankees need a good starter. Make it happen Cashman.

We should do that thing where, like, the offense whose names aren’t Cano or A-Rod get hits. And they round home. And we tie the score. And then Gardner does that thing where he swings the bat and hits the ball. And Jeter does that thing he did yesterday where the ball left the infield and he got on base.

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but Bartolo Colon needs to replace Hughes in the rotation. The Red Sox were kind enough to give the Yankees a head start on the season, let’s not squander it by throwing out a Carlos Silva clone without the control out there.

  • Monteroisdinero

Folks-we are 6-4 and tied for first and the Sox are 2-9 not 9-2. Bartolo can replace Phil. The bats will come around. We’ll be fine

Through the 2nd inning. Velocity was mid 80s broke alot. THen in the 4.2 it was like high-mid eughties (like 88.5) but dfidnt’ break, like, at all.

        • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

Velocity got a little better. Curve looked great. Cutter looked beyond horrendous.

  • Mike Myers

Or does Colon at least get the start over Freddy?

  • Dave

If Colon was starting, he could possibly be our #2.

  • Tom

I was and am still a Hughes fan but something is 100% wrong. Colon is pitching decent so why not give him a shot to start??? Hell the guy was one of the top 5 pithchers in baseball

    • http://danielslifka.wordpress.com Jerome S.

He never was…. and again, was.

      • first time lawng time

Yeah he was. Back in the early 90s. You probably woudn’t remember it. He was a pleasure to watch. His 4-seem cut fastball that changes speeds was filthy.

  • Cy Pettitte

Colon appears to have lost 3-4mph…that’s not good

    • nedro

      Still puttin up zeros

    • first time lawng time

He’s getting people out so it obviously isn’t bad.

Like I say, steroids in this town could do wonders.

    • Jake Jarmel

Colon isn’t 24 years old. Hughes’s downfall is very concerning and he shouldn’t be costing the major league club ballgames while he works through his troubles.

  • Total Dominication

Let’s do this. Nice at bat Swish.

  • Total Dominication

    Niiiice.

  • Mike Myers

swisher should be player of the game for that awesome catch.

  • Hall and Nokes

Kay made the same geographic joke as me!

  • First time lawng time

    Posada sucks lol whatevs

  • Mike Myers

    Yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • JerseyDutch

    Dang.

  • Total Dominication

    How did Swish not score?

    • JerseyDutch

      He’s a slow white boy?

  • Esteban

    Ahhhhhh just missed it.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

    Thank Mo Martin is up.

  • First time lawng time

Tease…steroids on Grandy = upper deck

    • http://twitter.com/Paddock9652 Stratman9652

If you think this steroids thing is funny… Please stop. Its not. Nobody is laughing and I’m sick of seeing a lame steriods comment every time I refresh this page.

  • Esteban

Did he come off the bag?

    • Esteban

      Nope

  • JerseyDutch

Too bad we can’t play small ball.

  • YankeesJunkie

Hot Damn it is the Grandy Man!

  • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

And the bottom of the lineup comes through!

  • AaronGuileWithASmile

AHHHHHH Sterling drives me crazy on those deep fly balls!

  • Slappy White

IT IS HIGH, IT IS FAR, IT IS….long pause…off the wall
    Damn you Sterling

    • Hall and Nokes

It was actually worse on tv because of the way it bounced around the glass pane on the wall, looked like it was bouncing around the bullpen

  • aRX

Brett, I swear I’ll forgive you for slaughtering my team avg/obp so far if you hit a game tying single here….

  • Mike Myers

    Gardy walk….grand slam Jeter?

    • Mike Myers

      I mean 3 run shot…..counting is tough

  • BigBlueAL

Safe to say if Jeter was playing SS for the Orioles this game would be tied right now lol.

    • Mike Myers

the jeter hate is strong in you.

      • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

It’s pretty easy considering the 60 million he’ll get. I mean I love the Captain but the contract is pretty bad.

  • Total Dominication

    Lol Weiters.

  • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

Perfect throw to the ump by Wieters.

  • aRX

Brett, I swear I will hate you forever if you K looking here…

    • JerseyDutch

Well, at least he took a swing.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

I’m going to call the backwards K.

  • aRX

    :sigh:

    • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

      At least he swung.

      • aRX

        Progress.

  • Mike Myers

Uhhhh, no need to run to first budski.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

Good news. Teix-ARod-Cano is due up.

    • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

And Jeter leads off the inning so there’s nobody on first ahead of him.

  • First time lawng time

Wow Gardner you’re an illegitimate majo leaguer…just like Jesus Montero

    • Monteroisdinero

      Wow your comments.

  • jorge brosada

    Fucking-A Gardner…

  • Monteroisdinero

Hey folks look at the bright side. We’re back in it and Gardy struck out SWINGING!

    • jdp

Strikeouts are expected from power hitters, but when a guy without power is 2d on your team in Ks?

      • Monteroisdinero

He’s having a rough start to the season which isn’t allowed unless you are Carl Crawford or Kevin Youkilis.

  • BigBlueAL

Well, with a LHP starting next 2 games at the very least Gardner will be batting 9th again.

  • Cy Pettitte

RAB refuses to load for me on Chrome a lot recently, works ok with Safari. Anyone else having similar problems?

    • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

      So it’s not just me.

    • JerseyDutch

Chrome seems to have page loading problems in general. There are sites I just have to refresh a few times before they come up.

    • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

Chrome is really struggling for me too.

  • baby elephants

who wants to see more andruw jones??????????

  • AaronGuileWithASmile

Gardner’s gotta do something about these strikeouts. Bro’s driving me up the wall.

  • Total Dominication

  • http://twitter.com/Paddock9652 Stratman9652

Still the prettiest throw in baseball.

  • Greg Golson’s Rocket Arm

Jeter going to his left!!! thats never happened before!

  • Mickey Scheister

please bench Gardner now. Andruw Jones and Chavez, both better hitters, were ready on the bench. I’m losing patience with the Grit-less one.

  • Monteroisdinero

Jeets finds a guy he can throw out with the pirouette move.

    Is Vlad faster than Jorge?

  • Cy Pettitte

kind of odd, Colon was 92-94 out of the pen, 88-90 last inning, back to 93 this inning. wonky gun?

  • JerseyDutch

I like Colon. He’s been pretty regular lately.

    • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

      ICWUDT.

    • http://twitter.com/Paddock9652 Stratman9652

      Too easy?

  • Dave

4 seam vs 2 seam fastball?

  • Cy Pettitte

uhhhh why is Joba throwing? Soriano is the 8th inning guy

    • JerseyDutch

      Except when he isn’t.

    • Hummingbird S.

and the better pitcher, it should be him coming in..

      • jiffy

well, he is just the low-leverage 8th inning guy.

  • bonestock94

    Wouldn’t mind seeing Soriano

  • http://twitter.com/Paddock9652 Stratman9652

As long as I don’t see Logan up in the pen tonight I’ll be happy.

No worries, just sets up the epic walkoff Gardner triple. Yes.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

We need ARod or Cano to be in every plate appearance.

  • Mickey Scheister

DAMNIT!!! Missed opportunities, 3 offensive outs left to make some noise! I swear if it comes down to the game on the line with Gardner up and they don’t pinch hit for him, I will lose it. He sucks something awful, right now.

    • jdp

the Irish closer is a righty
      Chavez to pinch-hit for Gardner?

  • Monteroisdinero

Joba-let that hair grow into a ponytail. He is in Mitre country now.

  • Cy Pettitte

Twins lose to the Rays in 10
Nathan blows it, Capps takes the loss and Krazy Kyle gets the save…lol

    • BigBlueAL

Damon hit a walk-off HR I believe. Think Kyle actually blew a save or gave up the go-ahead run in the 10th.

      • Cy Pettitte

yea my bad, win not save

  • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

Who gets the big hit this inning, Granderson or Martin?

  • Cy Pettitte

you sit your ass down Boone Logan

  • Jake Jarmel

Under no circumstances should Brett Gardner be batting in the 9th inning. He should have been moved to 9th in the order long ago. Put Grandy at #1 and see what he does.

    • bonestock94

We’re gonna see the 10 time allstar hopefully

    • JerseyDutch

      Todd Gaak wouldn’t say that.

    • Freddy’s Mom

I’m guessing Gardy will sit, but who will hit for him? Chavez?

  • mbonzo

    Joba at 98!?!?!

  • Rey22

Grandy HR ties the game. Called it.

      Nice try

    • MikeD

I was listening on the radio earlier when Grandy hit the double. Sterling went into his HR call, only to be shocked when it hit off the fense.

    STOP BUNTING ARGOAHJFOEWJFOAJEITHEIKFLGNRIGHN%$RIG)T

  • BigBlueAL

    DONT BUNT!!!

  • jdp

    BUNT?

  • YankeesJunkie

    :)

    Let’s go Yanks.

  • William

    NO BUNTING!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

  • Cy Pettitte

Russell…Y U NO SWING THE BAT?

  • Esteban

    WHY BUNT?????????!!!!!!!!!!

  • mbonzo

Walk off single from Gardner, I’m feeling his bad babip is over.

  • TMiller

anyone else hate the sac bunt? especially with a guy who probably NEVER bunts?

  • Pastadivingarod

    Martin ready to get pie

  • Warren

    bunting WHY???

  • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

    Bunt now.

  • aRX

Doh. Ok Brett, a walkoff will wash away a lot of your struggles this year…please…

  • Monteroisdinero

Now we know martin can’t bunt. Can anyone?

  • Cy Pettitte

    PINCH HIT WTF?!?

  • mbonzo

    Plant one Gardner!

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Ugh, you gotta pinch hit Chavez here.

  • jorge brosada

Dammit Russell…why the fuck is Gardner still in this game?

  • jon

    gardner and jeter?

o well extra innings it is

  • baby elephants

good job russell. you piece of shit.

  • Jonathan

I understand people being against bunting because the data shows you’re more likely to have a big inning without bunting…but when you need just 1 run to win the game is it really more likely that one of martin/gardner/jeter gets a hit or that gardner/jeter can hit a decent fly ball?

    • Esteban

You’re right, but the way Gardner and Jeter are hitting change the equation. I guess.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

Looking at it now it’s better not to bunt with Gardner and Jeter right after you.

      • Jonathan

if it was moving him to 2nd then I agree. But them struggling only shows how unlikely it would be for them to get a hit and moving him to 3rd gives you a better chance of getting the run in. But in all honesty, the way Gardner is hitting who the fuck knows when he’ll do anything positive.

    • CapitalT

You mean Gardner to hit a fly ball because with 2 outs, Jeter hitting a fly would mean nothing

      • Jonathan

can’t assume gardner gets out. They might have walked gardner to set up the double play or he could have just walked anyway.

  • CapitalT

Why bunt with a runner in scoring position not to mention Martin is one of 3 guys actually hitting the ball this year (Arod & Cano)

    • Jonathan

because then you don’t need a hit to score the winning run…wild pitch/error/flyball/dink groundball/squeeze play etc.

  • Mister Delaware

“Guys, this comeback is going way too fast. We’re not even getting a chance to savor it. How can we slow things down?” – Joe G., Bronx, NY

    • Monteroisdinero

by playing free baseball and watching more of our bullpen. Enjoy everybody. We came back from 5-0 in another shitty Phil start. Epic April battle for first place.

  • aRX

omfg….ok fuck it, I’m benching him the rest of the week.

  • swishers fauxhawk

Oh my God was Gardner late on that swing.

  • Monteroisdinero

OK Brett-now even I am getting impatient.

  • jon

jeter is going to strike out just to avoid getting hit with a pie

  • jorge brosada

    Gardner is fucking terrible

  • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

Well when jeter gets out we Have Teix, ARod and Cano up.

  • aRX

Did anyone not see that one coming?

  • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

    JETER WHY?!

  • Mister Delaware

And pulls a pitch in the lefty box. Gorgeous.

  • mbonzo

    “Soft groundball to short”

  • swishers fauxhawk

Good thing we wasted an out attempting to bunt.

  • Dave

    FML.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

Who could have forseen a groundout on one pitch?

  • Cy Pettitte

glad we still have Chavez sitting on the bench

how the fuck do you not pinch hit there?

  • baby elephants

    shocker

  • Jake Jarmel

We have the worst 1-2 hitters in the league. Those two clowns need to be moved down or benched immediately.

    • OldYanksFan

Really… especially since they make $17.5m between them.

  • BigBlueAL

Pathetic but unfortunately not surprising. Yanks win it in the 10th though.

  • OldYanksFan

Rooting for Jeter to get a big hit is like rooting for a lottery ticket.

    • baby elephants

sad to see him playing like total shit… hes really lost it.

  • jorge brosada

That was so poorly executed, stranded a fucking lead-off double. Gardner and Jeter are both so bad

    • TMiller

technically it was a lead-off HR.. followed by a 0 outs double

  • Alex S

Why didn’t we just pinch hit Andruw for Gardner?

  • Esteban

I’m shocked! Strikeout and groundball from Gardner and Jeter.
    How about Swisher 1, Cano 2, Teix 3, ARod 4, POsada 5, Granderson 6, Martin 7, Gardner 8, Jeter 9

      Swisher is slumping too.
Grandy, Cano, ARod, Teix, Posada, Martin, Swisher, Jeter, Gardner.

    • Monteroisdinero

Swisher at leadoff is a joke. We are not that desparate. We r tied for first place and are not the 2-9 Sux.

      • Esteban

Why is Swisher leadoff a joke?

        • mbonzo

He has no speed and he’s hitting just as well as Gardner. Arod and Cano are the only 2 guys hitting right now, and the Yankees are actually winning games. I don’t know why we have to alter the firs place team’s whole lineup 2 weeks into the season.

          • Esteban

I trust Swisher to start hitting more than I trust Gardner to hit.

        • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

I think Swish himself said he has an issue with it.

  • Big Apple

Joe can shove that bunt in his cornhole

  • Freddy’s Mom

If Martin had gotten Grandy to third I’m sure Joe’d have PH for Gardy, but with one out it made sense I guess to let him hit with his speed. Whatre you gonna do? You got two key players who can’t get arrested.

    • jdp

      WHY DOES SPEED MATTER?
an infield hit does not score the run

  • Mickey Scheister

Okay, I understand leaving Jeter in, he’s Derek F’IN Jeter. WHY LEAVE GARDNER IN WITH A RISP. Hey-Zeus! Bench him for a game or two, shit!

  • Rob

no faith at all in jeter in that situation, sad. as long as mo can hold it i have a lot of faith in tex, arod, and cano

  • BigBlueAL

Just read a tweet that said Martin has 4 sac bunts in over 2700 plate appearances. Must not be in Girardi’s binder.

  • toad

    yes.

  • Simon

Girardi’s fault. It was a, “Where were you on that one, dipshit!?!?” moment…

  • JerseyDutch

    GIDP. Nice.

  • TMiller

How could anyone not love Mo. Gives up a single.. gets the perfect DP ball and just watches it happen like “alright.. Jeter, Canooooo and Tex.. Just how I planned it”

    Love watching him play

  • Cy Pettitte

    Mo bein’ Mo

  • JerseyDutch

    In Mo we trust.

  • MikeD

This has got to be our inning here.

  • YankeesJunkie

    Mariano!

  • Mike Myers

Time for some pie…..lets do this!

  • Jake Jarmel

Good hitters coming up in the 10th with a walkoff HR looming. Not even Gardner can ruin this night.

  • JerseyDutch

Teix, A-Rod, then Robbie. You have to like our chances.

  • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

    A-Rod vs. Gonzalez? Game over.

  • Zooboy

“The great Yankees closer Marijuana Marijuana!”

  • Simon

    “I pledge alliegance, under Mo….”

  • aRX

Walkoff jack by ARod, followed by stories in the NYP/NYDN saying “OMG! too many hrs!”

  • Mike Myers

Dustin Mosley has 1ER over 6inn right now….

    • http://twitter.com/stophamm3rtime Charlie Sheen

      against the astros…

    • Esteban

Really? You’re mourning the loss of Dustin Moseley?

  • mbonzo

This home plate umpire has been very good so far. I didn’t agree with his strike zone but its been very consistent.

  • Kevin

Arod should bunt here, dont you think girardi?

    • jdp

      beat me to it

  • Dave

Hmm….Big towering pop up to second followed by colossal drop by second baseman while tex was running it out and scores? This reminds me of that scenario.

  • Esteban

    This guy A-Rod is something.

  • Cuso

Gardner & Jeter are just God-awful at this point.

Tex is batting lead-off from the 4-hole

  • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

I never want to see a lineup without this fucking guy again.

  • Cy Pettitte

    AROD! UNSTOPPABLE

    pie for Cano please

  • Dave

Thank god some of our line up works.

  • mbonzo

Arod can hit anything right now. Sweet Jesus he’s incredible to watch.

  • Adam

    Good hold by Thomson…

  • YankeesJunkie

    A-Rod….wow…just wow!

  • Rey22

Tex – Arod – Cano picking up the slack. End it Robbie!

  • Adam

haha what the Kay…not going to walk him to set up the double play…with no outs?

  • Total Dominication

    Why aren’t they walking him?

  • Cy Pettitte

lol they’re gonna pitch to Robbie? ok.

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Why the hell aren’t they walking Robbie?

    /not complaining

    • Guest

      Strong ditto. On both points.

    • Esteban

They don’t know he hits lefties?

    • AaronGuileWithASmile

Really bad decision by Buck, I think. Don’t let the Yankees best hitter beat you.

      • Total Dominication

Well they already did. You meant second best hitter I suppose.

        • The Big City of Dreams

A-rod trying regain the title he once had.

  • Will

I like Kay’s call, TEIXEIRA ROUNDS THIRD, and the camera immediately cuts to him being halfway between second and third.

  • Kevin

    Pinch run for tex?

  • Guest

A-Rod = really, really good at baseball.

  • Jonathan

why are they pitching to cano…

  • Freddy’s Mom

Why is Girardi leaving Tex in?!

  • Avi

why are they not pinch running for Tex?

  • swishers fauxhawk

    Ugh, damnit.

  • Esteban

    Sheeeeeeeeeit

  • Dave

    Oooh.

  • 3Dale

Who else would love a Damon for Gardner trade right now?

    • mbonzo

      Are you insane?

    • Adam

      No one else.

      • Freddy’s Mom

I would love Gardy to get out of his slump and shut all you idiots up. If you don’t know a valuable ball player when you have one, go watch hockey.

    • Guest

Gardner has been terrible, but its April 13th.

Gardner has shown us that he could be a very valuable player who is currently under team control for years and has not yet entered his prime.

Damon is none of those things.

Yeah, no. I wouldn’t trade Gardner for Damon.

      • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

        He’s 27…

  • Guest

    Ohh, that’s unpleasant.

  • http://twitter.com/stophamm3rtime Charlie Sheen

they have to walk swisher, right?

  • Monteroisdinero

Does any team have a decent Loogy anymore? Swish has got to deliver now!!!

  • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

Get out the whipped cream, A.J.!

  • http://twitter.com/stophamm3rtime Charlie Sheen

  • JerseyDutch

  • baby elephants

    goodnight. suck it showalter.

  • Total Dominication

    Yeahhhhhh!!!!!!

  • AaronGuileWithASmile

    Ballgame over! Yankees win!

  • Dave

For having such a “feared” arm, Markakis has sailed a couple throws today

  • Monteroisdinero

    Tes puffin on home.

    • Monteroisdinero

      Tex

  • CapitalT

Can you call it a walk off when they had to run?

  • YankeesJunkie

    Game. Set. Match. Swisher returns!

  • http://twitter.com/#!/iiKeane JobaWockeeZ

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

  • http://twitter.com/stophamm3rtime dela g

    great comeback

  • http://www.blogs.thetenthinningstretch.com the tenth inning stretch

    Swish loves him some pie.

  • Cy Pettitte

    Swisher is hilarious

  • Dave

Hmm…stingy with the pie filling this time. In this economy…

  • MikeD

Man, I thought for sure Markakis would throw our the runner. He’s thrown out faster Yankees from further back.

    Great comeback!

  • http://twitter.com/reywtf Rey22

    Success!

  • AndrewYF

Damn, Showalter looks pretty stupid for not walking Swisher there. Even the great managers make boneheaded moves.

  • Simon

    That pie was soooo…SWISHALICIOUS!

  • pete

    lol. they won.

  • jorge brosada

Thank god we have Tex, Arod and Cano to pick up the slack. First walk off baby!

  • mbonzo

    158-4

  • Teh Comp Pick

They’ve gone to a two man BBTN so Berthiume can dome up Schilling without interruption

  • JerseyDutch

The cheese stands alone. Yankees at the top of the AL East.

  • First time lawng time

I hope aJ didn’t cut his hand throwing that pie

    //mccarver’d

  • aRX

So…who had the walkoff sac fly? ;)

  • Mickey Scheister

I need a drink after that game! Good win, nice work by the bullpen, dramatic game tying HR and a walk-off. I still think Gardner needs a couple games off to clear his head but it was a great game, if you remove the Hughes innings.

Effort is measured by results! – M. Addonizio

  • Monteroisdinero

Just proves when your starter, leadoff hitter, and HOF SS are sucking it up-Yanks can still find a way.

Swish gets Pie for a flyout and a game with no hits. Now he goes home to his hottie. It is good to be Swish.

    • Simon

He’ll have that sweet taste of victory all the way home!

  • First time lawng time

I have never in all my life seen the Yankees come back from down 5

    • Kit

You haven’t watched a lot of baseball then. They came back just last year against the Rangers and I think they were down by 6.

      • First time lawng time

Lol I was joking because whenever people (like myself) act like the game is over on the beginning and they’re down 5ish runs people here ate sarcastic and say “yeah it’s over because they’ve never come back from 5 runs before”

        • Kit

Ah, I see. Hard to tell over the intranetz.

    • Total Dominication

I vividly remember the game a few years ago where they had no one on with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th and came back from 6 runs to walkoff. It was when I was just getting in to baseball, and it made me a diehard fan.

  • Monteroisdinero

So Nunez should have been running for tex and Swish should have been walked to pitch to Posada.

It all worked out for us. Bring on the Rangers.

  • Guest

Jorge, doing his best Dave Kingman impression.

A-Rod, odd-number year…yeah. That one, so far, seems to be holding.

You know, did we all underestimate the impact of a hip injury on a hitter who relies so heavily on hip rotation to generate power? We pointed to no more roids, standard age decline, but could it all have been in the hip?

Because, it seems so far that it was all about the hip injury. It’s early. I could be completely wrong. But I am not just excited about A-Rod for the rest of the year. I’m much more excited for the rest of the contract. It’s still a terrible contract. But given how hard A-rod works, given how hard he works at staying in shape, and given how much of his “struggles” the last three years now appear to be due to the hip, I think there’s a fair shot that he performs WAY better over the next seven years than we all presumed.

Here’s hoping I’m right and not just wearing rose colored glasses.

    • Dice-Klay

the lanky 6 foot 7 inch Kong was something to see in person.

he had sooooooo much leverage, he would barely swing and yet crush the ball.

  • Adam

Seriously, I can’t imagine how annoying many people would be if the Yanks weren’t, say, at 7-4 and in first place…

    • Dice-Klay

      you can’t?

It’s pretty easy, the stadium booed Torre off the field during a 7-game losing streak in 2007. The very same stadium chanted “bring torre back” in 2008 when Girardi went through a dry spell.

They don’t call it the “Bronx Zoo” for nothing. This is a town were a bad review closes a multi-million dollar Broadway production after a single bad performance.

  • MikeD

Wooha, ManBan, Dellin and Gary Sanchez all on the DL today? That’s three of our top-four rated prospects. Jesus, take care.

I knew about the first two, but why was Sanchez DL’d?
