Game 34: Vinny from Jersey

By

(AP Photo/Charlie Riedel)

The Yankees have seen quite a bit of Vin Mazzaro in his brief big league career. He’s made three career starts against them (with the A’s, of course), only once completing five innings while pitching to a 9.69 ERA with nearly as many walks (ten) as strikeouts (12) in 13 innings. Yankee batters have tagged him for a .379/.486/.690 batting line in 70 plate appearances. I’m sure he’ll have some family in attendance for tonight, but I hope they go home disappointed for the Yankees’ sake. Here’s the lineup, same as yesterday’s…

Derek Jeter, SS
Curtis Granderson, CF
Mark Teixeira, 1B
Alex Rodriguez, 3B
Robinson Cano, 2B
Nick Swisher, RF
Jorge Posada, DH
Russell Martin, C
Brett Gardner, LF

A.J. Burnett, SP

YES will have the game when it begins a little after 7pm ET. Enjoy.

Notes: Busy afternoon today, with news about Gene Monahan, Rafael Soriano, Luis Ayala, and Lance Pendleton.

  1. Pat D says:

Mets get snowed out. Rangers score 7 runs, endure a 2 hour plus rain delay, and then get cancelled anyway.

    Chuckle.

  2. Xstar7 says:

    They’re doomed

  3. Kevin G. says:

    I’m a Vinny from Jersey… kinda.

  4. Epy0n says:

This kid Vinny should get slammed by our lineup. Tonight seems like the perfect night for Cano to pounce on the ball.

  5. CS Yankee says:

Why are we not leading this ballgame yet?

    /weredoomed

  6. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

At this pace, Burnett will strike out 27 batters.

  7. IRF says:

Selig just made this press release:

    Check Swings are for pussies

  8. Cy Pettitte says:

    K.J

umps who make that check swing call from behind the plate are douche bags though

  9. Hummingbird S. says:

    AJ nasty!!

  10. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    David DeJeezus.

  11. IRF says:

That looks like a hat they sell outside the stadium for 5 bucks

  12. Cy Pettitte says:

does McEnroe’s hat qualify as a fashion no-no?

  13. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Phew.

  14. CBean says:

Gameday won’t refresh for me. Or at least, it keeps thinking that Derek Jeter is up to bat at all times.

  15. Hummingbird S. says:

    hanging slider, gotta hit that

  16. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Yay-Rod.

  17. Cy Pettitte says:

    jesus christ.

  18. swishers fauxhawk says:

    A-Rod’s just a tad off.

  19. Jose the Satirist says:

Hey Mike, after reading that Posada piece earlier today I just wanted to remind you of your snark earlier this year.

I voiced the concern that some people had over Posada being an effective DH. You wrote it off and at one point sarcastically said “Yeah guys, I’m real worried about Jorge” after he hit a homer.

I ate crow in that thread and looked foolish but warned that was a dangerously small sample. Just wanted to let you know your snark looks a bit more foolish now that Posada has recorded 100 AB.

  20. first time lawng time says:

So during Melkys at bar they said he is the 5th player to homer in his first game in the Bronx after winning a WS with NY. Of the other 4 players to do the same, Matsui wasn’t mentioned…why? He homered off Pettitte right?

  21. Jose the Satirist says:

Worst poll ever? It is just a recap of last night.

  22. YankeesJunkie says:

Damn that was a nice try by Gardner.

  23. IRF says:

    Ugh. Please be OK Mark

  24. RalphieD says:

funny reaction by Burnett…he was like “awww snap i cant believe you almost had that, you fast guy, you”

  25. Cy Pettitte says:

    long ass single

  26. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Eric Chavez with a broken foot runs faster than a healthy Jorge Posada. Fact.

  27. CS Yankee says:

Vinny is due…for about 5 ER thru 3.

  28. Ari G says:

    great slide

  29. swishers fauxhawk says:

    That ump was pretty excited.

  30. Mike Axisa says:

    Very nice slide, Robinson.

  31. Esteban says:

What a (lazy) slide by Cano!!

  32. Cy Pettitte says:

    now that’s what I call a slide

  33. Teh Comp Pick says:

Dyson’s speed is unreal…Fastest guy in baseball I think right now. Maybe Bourne second?

  34. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

They CAN NOT shut up about Francoeur’s arm!

  35. Pat D says:

No one’s been talkin’ bout Russell Martin’s slump…

  36. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Unleash the grit.

  37. swishers fauxhawk says:

    Come on Jetes.

  38. first time lawng time says:

    Flaherty is so stupid.

  39. CS Yankee says:

    Let’s go Jeet!

  40. Ari G says:

    think martin shuda bunted there

  41. Jonathan says:

Don’t you love it when a singles hitter swings at ball four on a 3-1 count?

  42. swishers fauxhawk says:

    Runners in sad places.

  43. Hummingbird S. says:

at least they have the lead but this lack of hitting with RISP sucks

  44. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Mike? What are you, twelve?

  45. Cy Pettitte says:

booooo there goes the no hitter

  46. IRF says:

The Hosmers are not a charismatic people.

  47. CS Yankee says:

What in the hell is going on in Toronto? They have Juan Riveria batting cleanup???

(not to mention he K’d with bases juiced against Lackey with no-outs)

  48. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Atta baby, Russel.

  49. Kostas says:

I think aside from Boston, the Yankees might be the more fearful of RISP than any other team. #RISPKryptonite

    • CS Yankee says:

Let’s hope the Royals go with that approach and walk the first three batters every inning.

  50. Esteban says:

    He’s so good!!

  51. YankeesJunkie says:

That is a hell of homer from Granderson, I never expected to see this type of power from him.

  52. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Fuck. Yes. Curtis. I. Love. You. Must. Keep. Using. One. Word. Sentences.

  53. Xstar7 says:

There you go Curtis, there you go.

  54. The Major League leader in HR: Curtis Granderson. God I love this guy.

  55. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Game Thread is dead tonight :(

  56. YankeesJunkie says:

A-Rod is close to breaking out.

  57. Xstar7 says:

    A-Rod with the Jeterian hit.

  58. Corporate Scum says:

Wow. I really miss Phil Coke.

  59. OldYanksFan says:

ARod is turming into Jeter right before our eyes.

    • Kostas says:

You are so wrong. You clearly do not understand the skill it takes to hit the ball and make it go directly off the plate and bounce high enough that you can get an infield single….

  60. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Dayum, Robinson.

  61. Mojo says:

WTF is up with GAMEDAY? I hate watching GameCast!

  62. swishers fauxhawk says:

This broadcast is a Swisher lovefest.

  63. Kostas says:

John Lackey giving up another bomb… Great non signing by the Yankees

  64. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Breaking News: Lackey still sucks.

  65. Kostas says:

Man, Tampa is tied with the Yankees and David Price is only 4-3.

    • Esteban says:

      Are Rays fans saying,
“Man, we’re tied with Yankees and CC is on;y 3-2?”

Maybe some are, but I’m not really concerned with people who use pitcher wins as a barometer for anything.

      • Kostas says:

Really that is your response? Um, when is an observation a barometric measurement?

  66. swishers fauxhawk says:

Anytime we wanna knock Vinny from Jersey out of the game would be great.

  67. Xstar7 says:

Time to break out of your slump Russell.

  68. Cy Pettitte says:

how the hell have they only managed to score 2?

  69. first time lawng time says:

Let’s start a petition to can Flaherty.

Or at least limit him to one series every other month. Preferably the ones that are on the weekends with Fox on Sat and ESPN on Sun.

  70. A-Rod's Wingman says:

One Jack 80 pitches through three. Two runs.

    Awesome.

  71. Kostas says:

If the object of the game was to load the bases but NOT score, the Yankees would be 162-0. #puredominance

  72. swishers fauxhawk says:

Yep, that was going to happen.

  73. JobaWockeeZ says:

Wow Hosmer. I’ll remember this piece of trivia for some time.

  74. swishers fauxhawk says:

    Settle down, AJ.

  75. first time lawng time says:

LMAO remember in Minnesota last year (or maybe Baltimore) when NY hit a HR and a fan caught it and threw it back and hit the pitcher’s mound?

    I do.

  76. pete says:

is it me or does hosmer look a lot like Ellsbury?

  77. Cy Pettitte says:

they are teeing off on AJ now, no me gusta

  78. iloveyoubartolo says:

    Ugly, ugly, ugly.

  79. first time lawng time says:

We should do a tally and count how many time Flaherty references to how bad he was as a player.

He’s definitely fishing for compliments. Kinda sad. I’d feel sorry for him if I didn’t have to listen to him.

  80. Stratman9652 says:

If this kid turns out to be as good as expected, the fan who threw the ball back will really wish he reconsidered.

    • Cy Pettitte says:

yea that was dumb, at least hold onto it and negotiate for some signed stuff, lol

  81. CMP says:

Has Hosmer’s homer landed yet and does he get a free steak or a new suit after that blast?

  82. first time lawng time says:

    Shut up Flaherty.

  83. inpinstripes says:

    What a beauty!!!

  84. swishers fauxhawk says:

    -Gardner
    -Good bunt

    Pick one.

  85. Mike Axisa says:

That was a gem, Brett. Well done.

  86. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    Yay BUNTS!!!

  87. Cy Pettitte says:

    yay BG

  88. swishers fauxhawk says:

    Don’t do it Derek.

  89. first time lawng time says:

Alright. Seriously we need to pound this scrub. KC BP is intimidating.

  90. Cy Pettitte says:

    gum in = going

  91. first time lawng time says:

Flaherty always analyzing things. He needs to shut up and lighten up.

  92. swishers fauxhawk says:

    Not even close.

  93. Skip says:

Well it would have been a double play anyway…

  94. jon says:

how nice of gardner to get caught stealing so jeter wouldnt GIDP

  95. bakekrukow412 says:

I actually live in Cold Spring, where the Hosmer’s are from.

  96. first time lawng time says:

Arod is a pig. He’s always munching on seeds and spitting them out. He’s disgusting.

  97. The209 says:

    unacceptable.

  98. Corporate Scum says:

Wow. Screw the third base ump.

  99. Mickey Scheister says:

The ump is clearly racist, Grandy checked his swing. If it was a white player…

    • Corporate Scum says:

By racist, do you mean blind? If so then yes.

      • Mickey Scheister says:

Something! I could understand if they were close, but he clearly checked. The Ump was born in 1902, he is prob closed minded so realistically he is more likey racist than blind, if he was blind he wouldn’t be able to be racist. See blind Clan leader on Chappelles show.

  100. NYY1 says:

Why does Gardner slide so early?

  101. swishers fauxhawk says:

    I love Lackey.

  102. first time lawng time says:

Nancy Nuemann needs to be fired.

    Lackey is hideous.

  103. Matt says:

Another game that the Yankees have completely dominated, yet have not even come close to putting away the opposing team.

One swing of the bat was all it took last inning to erase half of this lead, and every out off of Burnett was to the warning track.

It’s embarrassing to not cash in on these kinds of opportunities. 1 for 8 with RISP in just 3 innings of the game. Either every hitter is hot at once or they all go ice cold at the same time. It’s unbelievable how streaky this team can be.

  104. first time lawng time says:

AJ and Robbie have the same cleats.

  105. Mickey Scheister says:

Cano looked like he almost jacked that one up. Lazy.

  106. Mister Delaware says:

There are few pitchers I enjoy watching more than Burnett when he’s not doing the overthrow-the-fastball-and-spike-the-curve routine.

  107. YankeesJunkie says:

I never thought of 75 pitches through 4.2 IP as really elevated (Royals announcers).

    • Mickey Scheister says:

They should look at some guy named Vin’s pitch count if they wanna see elevated.

  108. Cy Pettitte says:

    waling Dyson is unforgivable

  109. first time lawng time says:

No matter what happens, the offense has sucked tonight (in terms of scoring rubs) so far.

  110. Mickey Scheister says:

    Appeal to 3rd!!!!!!

  111. Mickey Scheister says:

    Best name in baseball: Adcock.

  112. Teh Comp Pick says:

    Somebody DFA this Rodriguez guy

  113. Xstar7 says:

    Wow A-Rod.

  114. Cy Pettitte says:

    not fucking cool.

  115. Mickey Scheister says:

    Adcock is an asshole.

  116. Mister Delaware says:

    Just take him out.

  117. first time lawng time says:

    Awww Robbie!!!
    Clear the benches!

  118. Cy Pettitte says:

Adcock balls to the face don’t seem like they’d be a pleasant experience

  119. V says:

Don’t fucking mess around. If it could be a concussion, pull him.

    Stupid.

  120. jon says:

    wow that man can fly

  121. nedro says:

pitchers who hit dudes in the head need to be required by the rules to bat the following inning.

    • Cy Pettitte says:

Robbie should get a free shot with his bat, like a piñata

    • Mister Delaware says:

pitchers intentionally who hit dudes in the head need to be required by the rules to bat the following inning.

      And that was not intentional.

      • Mister Delaware says:

        I suck at adding words.

        • nedro says:

          How bout:

pitchers who hit dudes intentionally need to be disciplined buy the ump/league, not than anyone could prove it was intentional.
pitchers who hit dudes in the HEAD, unintentionally or otherwise, need to be straight up dealt with.

          • Mister Delaware says:

Why not punish hitters who drills fans inside the far edges of the dugouts? Sure, they didn’t mean to, but they swung way too early or too late and the result was bad.

            • Mickey Scheister says:

But really, in the head? On purpose or not any pitcher that hits a batter in the head should be addressed. It’s no where near the zone and 100% unacceptable. I understand pitching in but in the head? No excuse, IMO.

            • nedro says:

why not punish posters who a. use humor/sarcasm, or b. can’t recognize it? (see original post)

  122. Mickey Scheister says:

Seriously, I really hope someone retaliates for that shit. Yankee hitters seem to get hit so often with no repercussions, it’s bullshit and it could end someones career.

    • Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Wait until the Sox come to town…

    • Mister Delaware says:

Give me a break. Retaliating for that is like punishing a kid juice. Zero intent.

      • Mister Delaware says:

Jesus christ, computer. “… punishing a kid for spilling his juice.”

        • Mickey Scheister says:

If my kid threw their sippy cup at my head, they’d get punished. If they “spilled their juice”, we’d laugh about it and clean it up. I’m from Dover, DE so I ain’t mad atcha!

  123. A-Rod's Wingman says:

Apparently it’s Buchholz, Beckett, and Lester for the weekend.

  124. Mickey Scheister says:

    Yes!

  125. IRF says:

Picked the perfect player to hit

  126. Mike Axisa says:

Why the warning? I’m sure he intentionally hit him to move the tying run into scoring position…

    • Mister Delaware says:

Best part is you could see the ump say “that’s going to be a warning … I know”. You almost get the feeling AJ’s response was “that wasn’t intentional”.

    • first time lawng time says:

I think it was just precautionary.

  127. first time lawng time says:

    Intentional or not?

  128. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

If that was on purpose, don’t do it with a man on base

  129. Cy Pettitte says:

why would he intentionally plunk someone with someone on base already and 1 run lead? obviously unintentional

  130. Mister Delaware says:

Girardi and Yost are going to get together and overrule the ump.

  131. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Walks and HBP. Love it.

  132. Cy Pettitte says:

    no A-splosion please.

  133. Wow says:

Why not retaliate by scoring some runs?

  134. IRF says:

    So LoJoMo in the 7th-8th-9th?

D-rob threw a lot of pitches last night

  135. YankeesJunkie says:

    Nice K for Burnett.

  136. Mister Delaware says:

    Nunez BULLSEYE!

  137. YankeesJunkie says:

Nunez throw to first base accurately! Auto-win!

  138. Cy Pettitte says:

    crisis A-verted

  139. Corporate Scum says:

Man, AJ’s baserunner/hit ratio is running a little high tonight.

  140. Chip says:

I love that AJ can get out of those situations now. He’s very close to being the above average number 2 we signed

  141. YankeesJunkie says:

    Yay for BABIP regression!

  142. Chip says:

    Wow, great at-bat by Posada

  143. Cy Pettitte says:

OT but this is the most ridiculous baseball related video I’ve ever seen, I feel compelled to share it with my fellow RABers

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....r_embedded

  144. Pat D says:

Jorge with 2 hits and a walk?

Sounds like there should be a “Whither Jorge?” article every day!

  145. first time lawng time says:

    What’s the crowd chanting?

  146. Posada read your piece Mike.

  147. jetrer says:

    here comes the bunt

  148. YankeesJunkie says:

Russell Martin makes my fantasy team very happy!

  149. The slumping catchers talk about their base hits.

  150. Chip says:

Fake the bunt and swing away, they’ll have the wheel play on to get Posada

  151. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

Don’t bunt BG PLEASE we seem to be seeing Adcock’s balls really well.

  152. IRF says:

Joe, please remember what happened last time Gardner didnt bunt

  153. YankeesJunkie says:

Someone must have stolen Giradi’s notebook!

  154. Cy Pettitte says:

Brett’s hitting the ball too hard

  155. Chip says:

I thought that was a sure single off the bat. Nice try Brett

  156. Damn, nice contact.

  157. IRF says:

    AH!! we should have bunted!

  158. first time lawng time says:

    RISP fail!

  159. Wow says:

    Score.

  160. Chip says:

Well, he didn’t hit it on the ground

  161. jetrer says:

Come on Grandy. Pound this midget.

  162. whitey says:

Twice tonight, i know it’s not allowed on this site, that the yanks should have moved runners up

  163. Mickey Scheister says:

Grandy hits a deep HR to right off the lefty here, I’m feelin’ it!

  164. nedro says:

oh the little backwards pitching munchkin again?

  165. whitey says:

Pre-determined would be the double play

  166. Kostas says:

What a fucking waste. But quality pitching like KC has will kill strand runners every time.

  167. Mickey Scheister says:

Fuck all these pop ups and ZERO production with RISP. These kinda games get hard to watch.

  168. Xstar7 says:

Wow. Just more and more RISP fail for the Yankees.

  169. Cy Pettitte says:

Ayala and Logan up in the bullpen with a 1 run lead, oh boy.

  170. Mickey Scheister says:

    Strike this fool out!

  171. Kostas says:

    Yankees to date – Runners at 1,2 – 17 k’s ; 8 dp’s. .228 BA

  172. Jack Klompus says:

Just one hit with RISP and we’d have an insurmountable lead against these guys. A-Rod failed, Martin failed, Posada failed. If these guys want to maintain their spots in the lineup they need to start getting the job done like the Captain.

  173. Chip says:

    AJ, what a stud

  174. YankeesJunkie says:

    Take that game from Burnett!

  175. Jack Klompus says:

And what does AJ have to do to get some runs? They never score for him, even against nobody pitchers.

  176. Good job AJ. JobaMo to close it out now.

  177. Pat D says:

    That’ll do, AJ.

    Insurance runs, please.

  178. rek4ghrig says:

Enough with these nail biters against KC…time to blow this game wide open

  179. Mojo says:

Serious question . . . Statistically, is there a worse team with RISP than the Yankees?

  180. ThrillHouseMD says:

    Lolz Lackey.

Why did they leave him in so long?

  181. Turk Turkleton says:

It’s almost as if MLB Network asked themselves, how can we be as bad as Baseball Tonight?

At that point, they created “Intentional Talk”…I swear, it’s not soley based on Millar, but what the EFF is the purpose of that show?

  182. CMP says:

Dallas Braden needs surgery on his shoulder for a torn capsule.

On the bright side, at least he won’t have to worry about an opposing player running across the mound while he’s pitching for the next year or so.

    • rek4ghrig says:

Yikes. Lots of injuries this year

    • Cy Pettitte says:

In the hospital: “HEY! don’t reach across my bed to adjust the IV drips”

    • Pat D says:

Sucks for him. This just increases the chances he’ll be remembered as the worst pitcher to throw a perfect game.

Seriously though, that’s not an easy injury to overcome. I believe that was one of the problems Brien Taylor had.

      • Mister Delaware says:

This might save him. Len Barker will still be the worst, Braden will be the most obscure.

        • Pat D says:

Charlie Robertson might actually be both of those, though.

          • Mister Delaware says:

This is what I get for seeing his name and thinking “I don’t know who that is but I’ll just guess he was better than Barker and Braden”. Score one for no research.

      • CMP says:

I think Chien Ming Wang did too.

  183. PaulF says:

AJ just put up a BABIP of .000 in that game didn’t he?

  184. JobaWockeeZ says:

How are there Yankees suck chants but no Let’s go Yankees? Sure they forget how to hit when a runner is on base but come on.

  185. Ben says:

Just gotta ask, has anyone ever enjoyed watching a game the Yankees have led all the way less than this?

  186. Please let us rest RoJoMo.

  187. Cy Pettitte says:

    this team is anti-clutch.

  188. Xstar7 says:

    Please don’t waste this opportunity.

  189. Mojo says:

It seems like they’ve put men on First and Second with one out or less in every inning so far. Shit’s brutal, yo.

  190. Martin got nicked up on that foul ball to the mask I guess.

  191. Mickey Scheister says:

I really hope Posada doesn’t swing over the top of a breaking pitch here…

  192. nedro says:

    yeeeessssss…….

  193. Mojo says:

Another thing I don’t seem to understand is how the Yankees’ strategy of pushing starting pitchers out of the game appears to work against them this year. Is it me, or are the Yankees struggling against Long-Relievers and mop-ups?

  194. Mickey Scheister says:

    Cmon Yanks! Do something!

  195. Amazing that with 5 1st and 2nd on with 1 or less out innings, this is the first where the bases are loaded.

  196. PaulF says:

Fans just did the wave in a one run game while the Yankees have two on.

  197. nedro says:

    frickin frick

  198. Cy Pettitte says:

    holy shit this is ridiculous

  199. jetrer says:

    awful

  200. Wow. Have Martin and Posada switched bats?

  201. Mickey Scheister says:

Jesus Christ! It’s like beating off with no competetion…

  202. JobaWockeeZ says:

Alright just go back to home run or bust mentality.

    Yes it’s a joke.

  203. Xstar7 says:

    Why do they even try

  204. Ben says:

Potentially on our way to a 3 and a half hour 2-1 game. Rough.

  205. jetrer says:

    where’s Joba?????

  206. Kostas says:

    fail·ure? ?
    [feyl-yer]
    –noun
    1. an act or instance of failing or proving unsuccessful; lack of success: His effort ended in failure. the campaign was a failure.
    2. nonperformance of something due, required, or expected: a failure to do what one has promised; a failure to appear.
    3. a subnormal quantity or quality; an insufficiency: the failure of crops.

    Just added:

    4. Yankee hitters with runners in scoring position.

  207. Cy Pettitte says:

too many good bullpen pitchers, not enough innings

  208. Kostas says:

    1-13 RISP – 12 LOB….

on the individual line of the box score the total LOB is 27…

  209. Jonathan says:

    Fuckin ump flinched

  210. Pat D says:

DRob, I’ll never win the argument with my dad that you’re the future closer if you keep walking people!

  211. Stratman9652 says:

D Rob is just walking men on base so he could do the Houdini thing right?

    • CBean says:

i swear he does better coming into a bad situation than starting out with a clean inning

  212. YankeesJunkie says:

    That is one nasty curve!

  213. Mister Delaware says:

God do I love that kid’s swing.

  214. 9 hits and 6!!! walks.

  215. Mickey Scheister says:

So belt high is lo longer a strike? Good to know.

  216. Esteban says:

KRob only walks or ks people.

  217. I wonder what Girardi is writing.

  218. Pat D says:

ESPN’s Gamecast had every pitch to Butler as a strike.

    • Mister Delaware says:

That’s a bad sign because the overhead cam showed the last pitch on the lefty box’s chalk.

      • Pat D says:

Interesting. That one was right on the line of their zone, so I called it a strike.

But now I know to not rely on that whatsoever.

        • Mister Delaware says:

Thinking about it, I imagine its entirely possible pitch f/x is right and the overhead cam is slighly askew.

  219. Mister Delaware says:

    Curve him to death here.

  220. Cy Pettitte says:

might as well walk Frenchy too, make it really interesting

  221. Ray the Anti-Handle says:

    Can always count on Frenchy.

  222. Jack Klompus says:

I’ll just never understand how we leave so many men on base. Russell Martin better start hitting soon or Montero will be up to take his job.

  223. Chip says:

    Poor AJ

  224. Cy Pettitte says:

    death by walks

  225. YankeesJunkie says:

    Well….fuck

  226. jetrer says:

so thats what a hit with RISP looks like

  227. CBean says:

Sigh. Maybe we should have, you know, gotten some damn runs in all those times we had the bases loaded.

  228. Jack Klompus says:

And why was Joba not in this ballgame? AJ once again pitches a gem and has nothing to show for it.

    • Ray the Anti-Handle says:

I’m fine with Robertson being in the game, even though I thought Joba would have been a better choice considering he only threw 9 pitches yesterday.

    • Slugger27 says:

joba pitched saturday, sunday, and tuesday.

if youre looking to place blame out of frustration, look at soriano. hes getting paid 11M for this very scenario.

    • Esteban says:

People complained when KRob was brought in earlier to games, people complain when he’s brought in later in games. Girardi can do no right.

And if the Yankees win, who the hell cares who gets the pitcher win.

  229. Wow says:

    Two hits.

  230. JobaWockeeZ says:

This game is gonna last a while.

  231. Pat D says:

OK, so ESPN Gamecast had the third pitch to Betemit way outside, yet it was a called strike.

  232. Jeff Karstens, Male Model says:

    Good fucking job D-Rob.

  233. I hate how Kay says it wasted AJ’s night. Like, do the 1 run 7 innings go away now?

  234. Mister Delaware says:

Melky Cabrera ? Future 3B coach

  235. Xstar7 says:

Fuck. Now the Yankees have to score.

  236. Matt says:

If they lose, don’t even think about blaming Robertson.

He threw 25 pitches yesterday and had to come in again to face the heart of the order.

How about this PATHETIC offense score some runs? 16 baserunners, 2 runs, and 1 for 13 with RISP. If you can’t score more than 2 runs with those chances, you deserve to lose.

    • Jack Klompus says:

Robertson walked two men and gave up the go ahead run. He is as much to blame for the loss as anyone. Where was Joba? Ask Girardi, he failed too.

  237. A-Rod's Wingman says:

Mike Jynxed D-Rob today by saying that he’s going to fail.

    Thanks a lot jerkface.

  238. Cy Pettitte says:

Joe wants to really put this out of reach, fuck tie games and potential extra innings, he has things to do.

  239. Esteban says:

Oh walks. Where’s Soriano when you need him?

Why is Burnett’s performance ‘wasted’? He only gave up 1 run, and the Yankees should have scored a lot more. And the game’s not over yet. Who cares who gets the pitcher win (if they win)?

  240. IRF says:

    D-rob :(

  241. jon says:

the royals has 2 runs on 2 hits

the yankees have 2 runs on 9 hits

  242. epy0n says:

Why throw that curveball in a 1-2 count in the middle of the plate and not somewhere away to tease the batter. Bad pitch and he gets punished for it.

  243. Rey22 says:

Did D-Rob get booed off the mound?

  244. No!!!! Bring in Joba you fool!

  245. tom says:

AJ didn’t deserve this, but you can almost say the Yankees did. It defies the law of averages, the number of men they’ve left on base tonight.

Not that I’m waving a white towel or anything, but, jeez, they’ve dominated the game everywhere tonight except in the runs column.

  246. jetrer says:

so who is hurt/sick, Joba or Mo??

  247. whitey says:

Frustrating when you expect your #8 and #9 hitter to be your RBI guys

  248. YankeesJunkie says:

    Time to score some runs.

  249. mbonzo says:

Joba better be sick to send Drob out there. If its Mo who’s sick then you should be able to send Joba out for 2 innings. If its Mo, I agree with what Girardi did kinda.

    • Esteban says:

Or Joba has pitched a lot lately, and Girardi was trying to get him a night off? Is that a possibility?

  250. Xstar7 says:

At least they only gave up one run. That inning could’ve been much worse. Now it’s time for the Yankees offense to FUCKING WAKE UP!

  251. YankeesJunkie says:

Hopefully Gardner can actually steal a base this time.

  252. Cy Pettitte says:

    Gardner please steal second

  253. Jonathan says:

steal. then bunt. do it BEFORE Jeter GIDP.

  254. Mister Delaware says:

I vote steal, no bunt. Or hit and run fast.

  255. mbonzo says:

Stolen base, sac bunt, sac fly. Bring in Mo.

  256. YankeesJunkie says:

    FUCK!

  257. Jeff Karstens, Male Model says:

    Woo hoo free outs!

  258. jetrer says:

    FUCKING AWFUL

  259. bonestock94 says:

    LOL

  260. Mister Delaware says:

    Wall meet fist.

  261. Slappy White says:

Gardner is the worst baserunning , fast player ever….grow a fucking set and steal the base

  262. mbonzo says:

Sac fly works like a charm again!

  263. Jonathan says:

    Nice fucking bunt Derek.

  264. ArchStanton says:

    This team is brain dead.

  265. Esteban says:

    Smallball! Gotta love it!

  266. mbonzo says:

Sac bunt works like a charm again!

  267. the tenth inning stretch says:

Jeter with the epic bunt fail.

  268. Pasqua says:

How many times does Girardi need to see this movie before he realizes how it ends?

  269. Mister Delaware says:

Gardner has to pick up Jeter (Girardi) here.

  270. Ray the Anti-Handle says:

    *Facepalm*

    Just steal the frickin’ base…

  271. Cy Pettitte says:

    oh my fucking god.

  272. Mister Delaware says:

That was textbook how to dick up a leadoff baserunner.

  273. BigTimeBartolo says:

We deserve to loose this one. Fucking pathetic

  274. aq3ws4ed5rf6tg7y9h0uinom[p,

  275. Chip says:

You really just need to attempt a steal there, no excuse for staying put

  276. bonestock94 says:

I’m so angry but I can only laugh at thought of everyone’s head exploding at the events that just occurred.

  277. Ben from Stanford says:

    Hey, no LOB this inning.

  278. tom says:

    THAT’S what was missing

  279. jetrer says:

FUCK Fuck FUCK Fuck fuck FUCK

  280. jon says:

why steal when you can GIDP

  281. Wow says:

Have I been watching the Mariners play the Royals all this time?

  282. mbonzo says:

This team is cold as ice.

    I still smell pie.

    • Cy Pettitte says:

if they get a walkoff the batter should get a shit sandwich to the face because they still suck and this game should have been over in the 3rd inning

  283. Can we get a new thread for luck? And better loading time?

  284. Xstar7 says:

    They’re torturing us

  285. Mister Delaware says:

Atleast this isn’t Ayala. I would have shit anger.

  286. mbonzo says:

Why not use Logan for Getz? Obviously Mo is better, but at least you could use him for the 10th too.

    • Mister Delaware says:

Because the way this season has gone for Logan, you’d be bringing in Mariano to face a sac bunt then 2 cracks at a bloop single.

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Because Logan can’t get lefties out?

  287. JobaWockeeZ says:

Bottom of the 8th in a tight game did anyone think Gardner would go? He lacks the elite baserunning skills so he plays it safe.

I don’t blame him. His team should be able to you know get a hit or get on base.

    • mbonzo says:

He needs to learn how to steal bases better.

      • JobaWockeeZ says:

He could but he should have more confidence in his speed. Dude is a true burner.

But he did his job by getting on base. Outright relying on the SB is ridiculous in this lineup.

  288. CBean says:

    Pie please.

  289. Mister Delaware says:

    I call a Lex Bomb.

  290. mbonzo says:

Predicting it now, Nunez gets pie just to spite Mike.

  291. Xstar7 says:

Mariano Rivera is still lights out. He’s one of the few people we can count on

  292. YankeesJunkie says:

Time for an A-Rod sac bunt!

  293. Mickey Scheister says:

Do not walk! Their better off without RISP! HR or bust

  294. Esteban says:

    Oh Alex :(

  295. BigTimeBartolo says:

The Arod slump is getting really old. Do something productive please, Alex

  296. Xstar7 says:

    A-Rod is really locked in.

  297. JobaWockeeZ says:

    It’s okay Teix we don’t need a RISP…

And I’m completely serious. Just go HR mentality form here on out.

  298. the tenth inning stretch says:

Lol Getz. Although if we’re able to get the run in here only because of an error, the win will feel a little hollow.

  299. mbonzo says:

    Come on Swish!

  300. Chip says:

So Nunez can steal a base but Gardner can’t? Come on Girardi

  301. Kostas says:

Shit runner at second…. Same ending coming.

  302. YankeesJunkie says:

There goes any chance of scoring with that stolen base.

  303. the tenth inning stretch says:

Dear Brett Gardner: please observe the base-stealing of Eduardo Nunez.

  304. mbonzo says:

    This is dumb.

  305. CBean says:

You don’t have to take that Jorge! (please don’t take that)

  306. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Thanks.

  307. Jeff Karstens, Male Model says:

Jorge: Beware the sliders in the dirt.

  308. Ray the Anti-Handle says:

    Make ‘em pay, Jorge.

  309. Mister Delaware says:

I want a walk-off then a dick grab at the Royals bench.

  310. Mickey Scheister says:

    HIP…HIP…

  311. Jack Klompus says:

Jorge needs to come through here to redeem himself in the eyes of Yankee fans.

  312. Ben from Stanford says:

Kay started a dramatic sentence and then realized in the middle that everything was pretty normal: “Wow, they’re deciding to WALK a STRUGGLING hitter, so that you can pitch to a guy who’s 2 for 2 tonight… oh wait it’s Posada, he’s batting .150, yeah that makes sense.”

  313. Esteban says:

    Jorge makes me :(

  314. the tenth inning stretch says:

    Jorge. Geez.

  315. JobaWockeeZ says:

Here’s a hint DO NOT PUT RUNNERS IN SCORING POSITION.

I like the effort Nunez but you killed us.

  316. Greg says:

I thought Mike said we were going to kill the Royals

  317. Mister Delaware says:

Gross. That was an I-need-to-start-my-bat-earlier-than-I-used-to kinda K.

  318. tom says:

If the Yankees lose, this is the worst game I ever saw.

    • Ben from Stanford says:

Did you start watching baseball like 3 weeks ago?

      • Mister Delaware says:

I still think we’re getting to the point of needing separate threads for the normal fans and the reactionary spazzes.

      • tom says:

        Actally, way many years ago.

That quote actually came from a Tigers fan, in a Roger Angell New Yorker piece, who was watching a similar game. I was using it semi-facetiously, but I thought it expressed a sentiment all truly devoted fans feel.

        • Mister Delaware says:

You can be devoted without being devoid of logic.

          • tom says:

You’re missing my point. It was the sort of hyperbole fans use during excruciating games. Obviously, facetiousness doesn’t fully translate to the Internet.

    • Kostas says:

Even if the Yankees win, this game could be the worst game you ever saw… at least the most pathetic display by a $200 million dollar offense juggernaut..

    • Not even close. Even this year, the Soriano 4run explosion was worse. And don’t get me started on the Cleveland game last year.

      • Matt says:

Umm, they scored double digits in runs in the Cleveland game. This would without a doubt be far more pathetic if they lost it, given how many chances they have had to put up 5 or 6 runs tonight.

  319. mbonzo says:

Lots of extra inning games tonight.

  320. BigTimeBartolo says:

0-infinity with runners in scoring position.

    ridiculous

  321. DareBear says:

Forget the strikeout.. 2 base bits and 2 walks in 5 PA. Jorge is back.

  322. Jeff Karstens, Male Model says:

Sliders in the dirt. If you got one, Jorge will swing in it’s general direction.

  323. Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat says:

    WHERE. IS. JOBA.

  324. Jose the Satirist says:

Nice new bullpen graphic. I like it.

  325. BigTimeBartolo says:

Buddy Carlyle and Luis Ayala left in the pen. Awesome.

  326. Xstar7 says:

The Yankees deserve to lose. And with Buddy Carlisle on the mound that’s a likely scenario.

  327. Simon says:

We only have 2 pitchers left. Time for Swisher to bring out the ol’ cannon.

  328. JobaTheHeat62 says:

ned yost spits in jorges face, and he takes it like a bitch haha

  329. Mickey Scheister says:

What’s the record for worst RISP in a game?

  330. jetrer says:

fucking walks. at least make them earn it

  331. Nuke LaDoosh says:

wow, cool time to get home and tune in. what i miss?

  332. mbonzo says:

Something needs to happen with this bullpen.

      • mbonzo says:

Bring up DJ for long relief.

        • Chip says:

Really? You’re going to complain about one of the best bullpens in the game?

          • mbonzo says:

One of the best bullpens going in to the season. Without Feliciano, with Soriano sucking and injured, and with these bullpen roles, I don’t like this bullpen anymore than last year. Our options tonight were basically Robertson (who had 25 pitches yesterday) and Mo. That’s unacceptable for a team that’s paying them so much. Bring up a kid who’s been great to knock some life into these guys.

  333. Mickey Scheister says:

This doesn’t inspire the utmost confidence, ole Buddy walking the first guy. This one is over. Goodnight Yanks, hello DVR’ed American Idol.

    /praying for a dp before I change channel’d

    • Mister Delaware says:

“This one is over. Goodnight Yanks, hello DVR’ed American Idol.”

You should be forced to get this tattooed on your neck so everyone knows you suck.

      • Mickey Scheister says:

I’m still watching, dick. I couldn’t bring myself to change it, despite presure from the wife.

  334. Jonathan says:

    Think Robbie turns that?

  335. mbonzo says:

Nunez didn’t throw the ball away!!!!!
    YEAAAAA! SUCK IT ROYALS!

  336. Simon says:

When is Girardi going to realize that Jorge can’t hit and try Jones there for a game or 2?

  337. BigBlueAL says:

Nunez aint Cano turning the DP. Then again not many are.

  338. BigTimeBartolo says:

What the fuck was that Buddy?

  339. Rick Ankiel says:

    /shudder

  340. jetrer says:

This game is giving me a migraine

  341. Jonathan says:

Wow…just because you’re in the major leagues, it doesn’t mean you’re a major leaguer

    • Mister Delaware says:

“Its totally on point, but I think its a bit too long for an autobiography title.” – Chase Wright’s literary agent

  342. Jeff Karstens, Male Model says:

Jeter: “I don’t know your name but that pitch was terribad.

  343. Jonathan says:

Buddy should have thrown that vs Frenchy. He might have actually swung

  344. Chip says:

Wow Buddy, you aren’t looking too good with that whole command thing

  345. Mike, can we please get a new thread. It’s getting pretty slow.

  346. Esteban says:

    Well this sucks.

  347. Greg says:

    Well goodnight everybody.

  348. YankeesJunkie says:

MOTHER FUCKER! This game has just been brutal.

    • Slugger27 says:

u act like 19 baserunners thru 9 innings should yield more than 2 runs. crazy talk.

  349. Chip says:

Oy vey, you had to know that was coming with all the elevated pitches from Buddy

  350. General Tsao says:

This man should not be pitching in this ballgame! Girardi lost the game! Where’s Joba?

  351. Mister Delaware says:

You can really feel Buddy’s anger through these IBB pitches.

  352. Wow says:

Funny how this whole RISP business works

  353. BigTimeBartolo says:

Of course. Thats what happens when you put Buddy fucking Carlyle in the game. The guy is a AAA scrub.

Now we get to see Soria, game over

  354. Matt says:

If the Yankees lose this game, it will be one of the disgraceful losses in years.

  355. Ben says:

    Worst game of the year.

    • mbonzo says:

Easily. I’d rather have a blowout.

    • Mister Delaware says:

This is not worse than the Soriano game. Unless you just came aboard. If thats the case: Welcome and settle down. Baseball is a very long season. You’re almost guaranteed 50 losses. Man, that seems like a lot! But its not.

  356. Jeff Karstens, Male Model says:

Losing on a clutch hit BY AN EX-MET!! I think the yankee offensive woes over the past couple of weeks are starting to make me lose my grip on reality.

  357. YankeesJunkie says:

Well that only means Soria for the 10th.

  358. jon says:

i cant wait for the yankees to load the bases and then hit into a triple play

  359. YankeesJunkie says:

When this game is over I am going to run in thunderstorm. Not for the exercise but the hope I get hit by lightning.

  360. Xstar7 says:

Buddy Carlyle is equal to or less than crap. It’s just another one of those agonizing Yankee games.

  361. Jerome S. says:

“Where’s Joba?” is definitely the new RAB meme?

  362. forensic says:

This weekend could be a complete embarrassment if they perform against the Red Sox the same way they have against the mediocre pitchers KC is running out there.

  363. Greg says:

All those Robertson supporters should hide after this game

  364. I’m trying not to get my hopes up now.

  365. mbonzo says:

Soria, his velocity is down 2 mph this year.

  366. Greg says:

    Kay says to bunt

  367. mbonzo says:

    A BUNT!? NOOOOOOOOO

  368. wow says:

the Yankees have the go-ahead DP at the plate.

  369. Mister Delaware says:

If Girardi goddamn bunts before a goddamn called strike …

  370. BigTimeBartolo says:

I swear to god if i see a bunt

  371. Cy Pettitte says:

doesn’t seem like a great year for pitchers named Soria-

  372. V says:

NO BUNTING. ESPECIALLY WHEN THE D00D JUST WALKED THE LEADOFF HITTER ON FOUR PITCHES. AND WHEN MARTIN IS FAST ENOUGH TO STEAL 2ND.

  373. jetrer says:

Quick, he can’t throw strikes. Give him a free out!

  374. bonestock94 says:

    The mexicutioner looks turrible

  375. Stratman9652 says:

No, Micheal Kay bunting is not the only play, dumbass.

  376. Xstar7 says:

Russell walks to lead off. Let’s see how the Yankees waste an opportunity to score this time.

  377. Esteban says:

Got walks on walks on walks.

  378. Mickey Scheister says:

How many mound conferences have the Royals had tonight? At least 10, one per inning.

  379. Matt says:

5 straight balls. If Gardner bunts, Girardi should be ashamed.

  380. 28 this year says:

btw, how often has Robertson warmed up this year? He seems to be in every single game, that can’t be good.

  381. BigTimeBartolo says:

Soria can’t throw a strike to save his life right now. DONT BUNT

  382. YankeesJunkie says:

    FUCKING BUNT!

  383. V says:

    DON’T BUNT YOU FUCKING IDIOTS

  384. Mister Delaware says:

Just woke up the dog cursing.

  385. Cy Pettitte says:

did he just bunt it into the seats? jesus christ.

  386. mbonzo says:

STOP BUNTING! I’m turning this TV off if I see another bunt. I’m really getting pissed.

  387. Michael Kay’s rules to baseball strategy:

    1- Get a hit.
    2- Bunt.

  388. OldYanksFan says:

    stupidstupidstupid

  389. jon says:

well at least it was a strike

  390. Jeff Karstens, Male Model says:

Fuck you and your bunts Joe Girardi.

  391. Cy Pettitte says:

at least they can’t GIDP to end this.

  392. Matt says:

    Are you kidding me?

Besides Cervelli’s 3-0 bunt last season, this is one of the dumbest bunt decisions I have ever seen.

  393. Nuke LaDoosh says:

    who liked that bunt?

  394. BigTimeBartolo says:

I swear to god I could do a better job than Girardi, the guy is a fucking moron

  395. Meat Loaf says:

This bunting shit is really getting on my nerves.

  396. Mickey Scheister says:

Way to go! Dude can’t throw a pitch over the plate and they give him an out.

  397. Mike Axisa says:

The lack of common sense is horrifying. Seven balls and one strike does not mean give him a free out.

  398. epy0n says:

Are you kidding me they just give up a fucking out when he is already down 3-1 to a WILD SORIA. UGH. Especially aggravating because Gardner is in BEAST MODE damnit let him either get walked or let him hit the snot of the ball.

    • epy0n says:

^_^ GRANDY CAN BABY that made so happy. Now if we didnt give that out for Gardner and let him get ON BASE because thats what HE DOES.

  399. handtius says:

when john sterling doesn’t agree with a bunt, god dammit, don’t fucking bunt! even he, the blind man, knows that is a bad place to bunt.

  400. YankeesJunkie says:

    The Grandyman can (hopefully)

  401. V says:

Quick – what do you do when you have a runner on 1st, need 2 runs to win the game, and are facing a pitcher who has started his relief appearance with 6 straight balls?

If your answer is ‘sacrifice bunt’, you need to be fired.

  402. jetrer says:

Glad to see Jeter is back on track

  403. JohnnyC says:

0 for 6? Ya gotta be kidding me.

  404. whataguy says:

    CAPTAIN CLUTCH

  405. Mister Delaware says:

Fucking handed over an out. This is so fucking stupid.

  406. CBean says:

Dear Curtis, please get Martin home.

  407. Rey22 says:

Topping out at 89? Jesus, what happened to Soria?

  408. jon says:

god i wish i could watch the yankee postgame show

they better rib girardi a new asshole

  409. bonestock94 says:

  411. Esteban says:

This guy Granderson. I’m telling you. THIS GUYYYYY

  412. Double-J says:

    The Grandyman can!

  413. Greg says:

    Bunt worked

  414. Nate says:

    Love the bunt!

  415. Cy Pettitte says:

Grandy = Clutch, that is all

  416. Mike Axisa says:

Curtis Granderson was like, fuck this shit.

  417. YankeesJunkie says:

    THE GRANDYMAN CAN!

  418. General Tsao says:

Grandy just bailed out Girardi. Hopefully someone can bail out Robertson.

  419. mbonzo says:

Thank god Granderson. I’m still so fucking pissed. If I was Steinbrenner I would have Girardi fired out of pure radical rage. I’m overreacting, but I’m just too mad.

  420. BigTimeBartolo says:

The Grandyman makes up for Girardi’s idiotic bunting. Yay Granderson

  421. Meat Loaf says:

    Thank you, Curtis.

  422. forensic says:

I just wish one beat writer would grow some balls and ask Girardi why he’s giving a free out to a pitcher who’s thrown 6 straight balls with one of the only guys in your lineup who is actually hitting.

  423. JD says:

Omg, the sac bunt worked. Lets fire the manager! *rolls eyes*

    • Mister Delaware says:

Thats like me punching myself in the dick then cooking a great dinner and thinking the key to cooking a great dinner is punching myself in the dick.

  424. Jose the Satirist says:

See? It wasn’t over. I love practicing zen baseball. It makes everything so enjoyable.

  425. Mariano's Pimp Hand says:

My fantasy team and I thank you Mr. Granderson

  426. V says:

If the Yankees lose, this loss is on Girardi. You needed TWO runs to win the game. Not one. Now you’ve got to stay with Buddy.

  427. BigBlueAL says:

I would normally be way more excited for that Grandy hit but Soria is on my fantasy team lol.

  428. jetrer says:

Seems like now would be a good time for a fresh thread

  429. YankeesJunkie says:

    Please add a new thread.

  430. BigTimeBartolo says:

Omg why is Carlyle still in this game

  431. ArchStanton says:

I think Tex is the worst hitter in baseball when he gets a hitter’s count of 2-0 or 3-1. Seems like a guarantee for a pop-up.
